A Staple South Tampa Restaurant Closes It’s Doors After 81 Years

Early this month, the iconic Colonnade restaurant closed it’s doors for good leaving just a simple note on the door for potential patrons to read explaining the sale. Fans of Colonnade were shocked and left in disbelief as they read their beloved restaurant had been sold to a development group who will be turning the site into luxury waterfront condos. “They had a blackened Grouper that was to die for. My dad will be

6

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4

very sad to find out the Colonnade has been sold. My family and I have been coming here for almost a decade,” says Carla Dubis. Even the employees were blindsided by the sale. Some employees had worked there for years and absolutely loved the ownership . One employee, who has decided to remain anonymous, told us they genuinely hope a new location pops up soon because she enjoyed her time as a waitress here very much. She got to

know many of the local residents and the regulars became like family, one couple even invited her to their wedding. The view of the Bay from inside the restaurant was beautiful so as you can imagine, window seats were always in high demand. Now with luxury condominiums going up in the near future the view from inside future residents homes will be of the bay and downtown Tampa. Those kinds of views always come with a

hefty price tag but the developers scored the land from the former restaurant for a mere 6.2 million bucks according to county records. Many of us are sad to see The Colonnade go but at least a number of families will enjoy the chance to live on Bayshore in style. I’m sure the developers who bought the location will do an excellent job in creating a condominium that will make Tampa proud.

Another Stanley Cup Playoffs For Tampa Bay!

Our Tampa Bay lightning have made the Stanley Cup playoffs yet again with excellent play all around for the entire season despite many key player injuries. Most notably, lightning star Steven Stamkos is out for the playoffs following an April 4th emergency surgery for a blood clot that actually required one of his upper ribs to be removed. Luckily the rest of the team seems to have stepped up in his absence and continued to win games

8

even without their Captain on the ice. Reminiscent of last years playoff push, Tyler Johnson has proven to be a Red Wings killer with textbook assists and tenacious play; it’s just beautiful to watch, classic hockey. He has emerged as the number one player the Red Wings want to shut down this post season which has opened the door for excellent play from other Lightning scorers such as Nikita Kucherov. In a recent ESPN interview talking about

Steven Stamkos how Johnson has become the number one threat for the Red Wings he said, “It’s a team game. I’ve been very fortunate that my line has been playing well and everyone is contributing and steps up.”The Red Wings knew the Lightning’s top line of Johnson, Kucherov and Alex Killorn would at-

tack very aggressively this playoff series but I don’t think anyone could predict the astonishing play of Kucherov so early this post season. He’s one heck of a player but most of us Lightning fans are very impressed with how much Koooooooch has taken off in the playoffs. Living up to just about every series between the Lightning and the Red Wings, fights have broken out just about every 2 minutes. The old hockey saying goes, the fans came out for a fight and a game of hockey broke out holds true in this series more than ever. As of today, press date, the Lightning are set to take on the Red Wings for game 5 leading 31. I will be walking across the bridge to Amalie Arena tonight and cheer on our home team. I’m confident we will win and by the time you read this we will be beating up on our next victims in the playoffs! Go Bolts!

Children’s Board Grant Funds New Programs For Sixth & Seventh Graders at Centre For Girls It’s full S.T.E.A.M. ahead for sixth and seventh graders at The Centre for Girls at 105 W. Sligh Ave., thanks to a two-year grant award totaling $309,000 from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Kelley Parris, Executive Director of The Children’s Board said: “For more than a year, the Children's Board has been collecting community feedback, data, and anecdotal information to develop strategies to make investments that lead to positive outcomes for children in Hillsborough County. Our findings yielded considerable concerns especially as it related to lack of available out of school time activities. In fact, in 2014, only 8.92% of Hillsborough County children were enrolled in after school programs. The Children’s Board is pleased to provide funding for this program and increase availability of positive out of school time activities.” Ann W. Madsen, Executive Director of the Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women, which operates The Centre for Girls said: “The grant makes it possible to broaden our arts and en-

richment programs for sixth and seventh graders to provide fun-infused programming especially designed for them. Through an innovative method of arts-integrated tutoring, we will use the arts to help girls improve reading and writing skills.” Centre for Girls Director Gabrielle Perham explained: “Our program is based on an evidencebased model which incorporates visual arts, drama, dance and music. Babysitting classes and water/home/fire safety classes will also be offered. “Our goal is to provide programs that teach skills to help girls develop a healthy understanding of themselves, others and the larger world. Providing a safe, vibrant learning space – especially for middle school girls – gives parents peace of mind. Parents will find us to be partners committed to their children’s healthy development both in and out of school.” The middle schoolers will be able to participate in Girls Glow, a 10-week series promoting healthy body image and self esteem. It is designed to approach middle school girls on their

own turf on topics such as self image, fashion, peer and societal pressures – and equip them with critical thinking and self-empowerment skills. Perham said: “Our girls have helped to shape the series, and we have commitments to “export” Girls GLOW to other child-centered organizations, eager to host the series for their girls.” A newly launched state-of-the-art Cyber Lab will help girls improve their digital skills through digital classes, robotics and regular arts-based after school activities. The Centre for Girls is a program of The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women and has built in new resources for parents as well. Counseling and Wellness and Employment Services programs will offer services to parents and families onsite during times when the facility is not being used by girls. Clinical counseling services in English or Spanish will be available for adults, couples, children and teens, and families. The Centre has licensed, Master’s-level counselors

who address issues of healthy family relationships, barriers to child academic achievement or to adult employment success, and stressors producing anxiety or depression. Workshops in Nurturing Parenting, Parent-Child Communication, Tips for Raising Teens, Anger Management for Tweens, and wellness workshops will be offered quarterly. In addition, The Centre for Women’s Employment Services staff will provide on-site job skills assessment and development, job search and placement assistance, and case management to remove barriers to sustained employment. These services will be open to all. For information about The Centre for Girls, call (813) 2313404 or visit thecentreforgirls.org.
