Having a trusted roofing company like Arry’s Roofing at the ready is as important as knowing the number to the power and the phone company. Family owned and operated, with

Since 1997, local Carrollwood attorney Jose L. Estrada has been protecting the rights of Tampa Bay residents, providing them with expert legal counsel and honest, aggressive personal injury representation. If you have been seriously injured in an accident or due to medical negligence, it’s crucial that you have a good attorney on your side; an attorney like Mr. Estrada who will work diligently to protect your legal rights and help you obtain the compensation you are entitled to. And, the best part is – there is

no out-of-pocket cost to you – you only pay when you receive compensation. Estrada says, “If you have suffered an injury, it is very important to know your rights. Whether you were in a car accident or suffered a slip and fall, if you have been hurt, then you need an attorney. You have a right to be compensated for your injuries. I will make sure your rights are protected and will fight on your behalf to get you the compensation you deserve, including money for medical care, lost wages, and more.” See “Estrada” on page 18.

From The Editor Alexis Selby

Your Neighborhood. Your Magazine. My husband Matt and I would like to take a second to thank you, our wonderful readers, for your continued support of our Carrollwood Area community magazine. We have been pleasantly caught off guard by the overwhelming amount of positive feedback that has been given to us, not only in the form of call ins and emails, but from many of you that we have seen out in the community at various events. We have received many constructive ideas about what people want to see in "their Carrollwood Magazine" too. We have been told at least a hundred times now about how much they love the positive, warm, “no-hard news feel” of the magazine. However, over the last couple of months we have had a re-occurring complaint that I thought I would never hear – multiple readers have said they would like to see more businesses advertising with us, as well as more offers and coupons. The offers I can understand, but more ads? In the 20 years my hus-

band’s family has been publishing the Neighborhood News, we have never heard this type of complaint. Recently, my husband asked a reader to go into detail about why she would like to see more ads and she wrote, "Your magazine is all about the place where I grew up and love. It's about what is going on in our community and this area. It is mostly family, or at least locally owned businesses that help keep the Carrollwood economy moving. I would love to see every business take advantage of your platform you have provided because I think it can really help them reach all of us, their customers. We all frequent the local businesses here, and Carrollwood has everything you could hope for in the sense of variety of marketplace. I personally, and I am not alone, would like to see more coupons and offers enticing customers to come in and shop. Your magazine is something many of us get excited and anxious to read every month. Keep up the great work." Gale S. We really appreciate feedback like

this and this example illustrates exactly what we want to accomplish for the community. We could definitely use all of your help growing our magazine. If you would like to see your favorite local places in this magazine, please, bring a copy with you the next time you go out, and show the owner. Tell them how you feel about our publication and ask them to contact us. In regards to advertising, my husband says, “I am pretty much the ‘anti sales guy’ or at least against the ‘old school’ version of a salesman – dressed up in a suit and tie knocking on doors and harassing people into advertising. That’s just not me; I like to let my product speak for itself and let my current advertisers and readers do the talking. This isn't to say I won't personally walk into a business and show them what I have to offer – I will – I'm just not into the high-pressure aspect of sales.” Once again, thanks for all of your continued support. We look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

The Right Fit™ Foundation Announces Scholarship Winners – Five Tampa Area High School Seniors Awarded College Scholarships The Right Fit™ Foundation (www.TheRighFitFoundation.org) announced its first annual scholarship recipients last month. Students were selected based upon their academic profile, an interview, and other qualifications. The Right Fit™ Foundation is a Tampa-based non-profit 501(c)(3), dedicated to educating families about the college admission and financial aid process. Founder Kenneth Albert says, “We are extremely excited to announce that we were able to give away, not only our main $5,000 prize, but also four $1,000 prizes; totaling $9,000 this year. We hope to award even more next year!” The five scholarship recipients are: Brant Wickersham, Wharton High ($5,000), Marilyn Boamah, Wiregrass Ranch High ($1,000), Cameron Jeffords, Hillsborough High ($1,000),

Lauren Sprague, Sunlake High ($1,000) and Lucas Hopegood, Freedom High ($1,000.) Applicants applied for the scholarship after attending one of The Right Fit™ Foundation’s free college admission and financial aid classes. Brant Wickersham, winner of the $5,000 scholarship, says that the class taught him, “the importance of the FAFSA and the common mistakes many people make when filling it out. On my own form, I had multiple mistakes that had the potential to decrease total funds allocated to me.” He says he is honored to receive this scholarship because, “I am able to take a little of the financial burden off of my parents and I will have a lot less student loans to pay off in the end.”

Helping Students Find the Right Fit™ Kenneth Albert created The Right Fit ™ Foundation to provide free classes to the community on how to select the right college, how to maximize financial aid, and how to reduce the family's out-of-pocket expenses. Inspired by his own experience of changing careers mid-life, he realized that students and their parents often miss the real heart of planning

for college – getting the right fit to begin with. As a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, he also noticed the trend in students taking longer to complete college degrees, as well as accruing more student loan debt. He wrote the book Finding the Right Fit: The Ultimate Guide to College (Mill City Press, 2009) to help families navigate the college search process and help students choose their career path wisely.

admission and financial aid classes along with their parents or guardians. Students can register to attend a class on the website as well. Finalists may be asked to complete an interview. The scholarship is a one-time award (nonrenewable) and will be paid directly to the accredited four-year college or university the winner chooses to attend. "The Right Fit Foundation™ is excited to help these very deserving Tampa students this year and others like them in the future,” says Albert.

Scholarships For College All five of this year’s scholarship winners fall into the “middle income” category. “These families often do not qualify for need-based financial aid and borrow more on average to pay for college,” says Albert. He is excited to offer this scholarship again next year, and hopes to expand the program. The information and application for the 2014 Right Fit™ Foundation Scholarship is already posted on their website – www.TheRightFitFoundation.org. To qualify, students must be a US Citizen, a resident of Pasco, Hillsborough or Pinellas counties, and have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must also attend one of the Foundation’s upcoming free college

Han Il Kwan Kinja – Deliciously Authentic Korean & Japanese Cuisine! By Alexis Selby Perfectly capturing the multicultural diversity of Western Asia, Han Il Kwan Kinja restaurant in Tampa intertwines unique aspects of the Korean and Japanese cultures to bring guests a uniquely delicious array of authentic Asian cuisine. A true staple in the local community, for over 30 years Kinja has been a fundamental part of Tampa’s history. “Open since 1979, we were the first Korean restaurant to open in Tampa,” says Yujin Kim, who runs the restaurant alongside her father Hei Kim and mother Soon Kim. Originally at another location, in 2001 Kinja moved to 8401 Waters Ave. in Tampa to better accommodate guests. Yujin’s family also owns another restaurant in Land O’ Lakes called Ginza, located at 2215 Collier Pkwy. From the peaceful aura of the beautifully decorated dining area, to the masterful presentation and aromatic flavor of the exquisite menu selections, dining at Kinja truly is an experience meant to engage all your senses. Yujin says, “Established by my grandfather over 30 years ago, this restaurant is a continuation of his legacy and we are dedicated to it and really want it to flourish. It is a part of my grandpa. It is the last thing that he left behind.” The front wall, which is decorated in his honor, features pictures of Yujin’s grandfather, “so as soon as you enter he still greets you,” adds Yujin. Recently undergoing beautiful new renovations, featuring elegant décor and the addition of sectioned seating, Kinja’s new look was specifically designed to provide guests with an enhanced dining experience. The newly added seating not only looks great, but also offers diners more privacy, and the

If you’ve never had Korean food, than you are in for a real culinary treat, as Korean food boasts deliciously distinct flavors, and the chef at Kinja does an exceptional job of bringing these flavors to life; and, if you have tried Korean before, you will find this to be some of the best you’ve ever eaten. Customer Donald P writes, “Authentic Korean food! The staff was very friendly and helpful in selecting menu items that we were craving for. I will definitely go back the next time I am visiting Tampa.” A true testament to the quality of their food, “we still have the same regulars that have been coming to our restaurant since we first opened,” adds Yujin. Encompassing a little bit of everything, Kinja’s menu perfectly embodies the uniqueness of the Korean and Japanese cultures, incorporating a huge selection of flavorful options, ranging from traditional to modern, and every-

thing in between. In addition, they also serve beer and wine, offering a nice variety of Korean imports. Whether you are new to Korean cuisine, or just want a little help choosing what to order, the friendly servers will happily give you recommendations based upon your individual preferences. Yujin says, “All the servers who work here are Korean, so they really know the menu well and are able to give you great suggestions.” On my previous visit Yujin recommended I try the Dolsot Bibimbap – a true Korean specialty. Made with rice, assorted vegetables and beef, this dish is served in a hot stone bowl, which sizzles the whole time you are eating. As the rice cooks, it absorbs the natural flavor of the sizzling bowl, creating a distinguishing taste that is really one-of-a-kind. The rice then begins to harden a bit, creating a thin crust that is absolutely delicious, and as everything heats up, you mix all the ingredients to-

gether for the ultimate Korean experience. Another uniquely Korean specialty and a dish that Kinja has truly mastered is Garbi, also known as Korean BBQ short ribs. Seasoned to perfection and coated in a sweet, yummy sauce, with each bite, the meat literally falls off the bone. Served in a more-than-generous portion, accompanied by 5 different side dishes, this entrée is the perfect share size; although, after one tender, tasty bite you might not want to share at all. “With all the sides, when you order a Korean entrée you get your daily serving of vegetables,” says Yujin. “Korean food is very good for you; it is really healthy.” Kinja’s menu also showcases delicious Japanese fare, which includes a hibachi section, giving guests the option to choose from a list of fresh ingredients, which are cooked to order. “It is important that every dish is made to perfection,” says Yujin. “My dad makes

A feast for the eyes with its huge portion size, this selection boasted huge chunks of chicken and steak and a nice variety of peppers, all grilled in a savory sauce that was really tasty. Despite sharing this entrée, we still had some left over to take home for later! In addition to hibachi, Kinja also offers a wonderful selection of fresh

sushi, and Hei is an expert when it comes to preparing the rolls. Yujin says, “My father is a great sushi man, that is what he loves to do. It is his specialty. He prides that we have the best sushi in Tampa Bay and I concur!” One of my favorites is their Fire Volcano Roll. In this roll, generous chunks of broiled spicy Salmon are placed atop a spicy tuna roll, completed with spicy mayo, avocado sauce and eel sauce. With each bite, the roll literally melts in your mouth, and the sauce is absolutely wonderful and is perfectly accompanied by a yummy crunch. If you are more in

the mood for a raw fish delicacy, try one of Kinja’s raw fish-style rolls, they are every bit as appetizing!

Sushi Buffett An excellent way to sample some of the many delicious rolls and exquisite cuisine that Kinja has to offer, the sushi buffet, held weekdays from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m., features a wide assortment of made-to-order sushi rolls, as well as a hibachi section and variety of hot Korean food dishes. “My co-workers and I came here

for lunch; so, naturally we had the lunch buffet,” writes customer Jonathan G. from Tampa. “I went straight for the Hibachi bar – there was shrimp, chicken, and steak available for Hibachi cooking. I recommend the Hibachi for starting off. Next you have sushi, which consists of about 13 or so choices. Try every one! They are all good, especially the fried ones. In the buffet they also offer other foods, including fried wontons, beef bulgogi, spicy pork, fired rice, and many others. The food here is really good. I definitely recommend this restaurant!” Looking to cater your next party or event? With their extensive menu, you will have no problem choosing selections that everyone will enjoy, and their wonderful staff can accommodate groups of all sizes. A delicious fusion of Japanese and Korean, Han Il Kwan Kinja offers a diverse selection of authentic cuisine in a beautiful atmosphere that truly embodies the Asian culture. Yujin says, “When you come here, you really get the full Korean experience!” Han Il Kwan Kinja is located at 8401 Waters Ave. in Tampa. They are open Mon. – Thurs. 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Fri. and Sat. 11:30 a.m. – 11 p.m.; Sun. 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. For more information please call (813) 806-1551.

Local Girl Scout Needs Your Assistance Helping the Oklahoma Tornado Victims Girl Scouts isn’t just about cookies. Girl Scouts teaches girls how to be leaders and encourages them to make the world a better place. One way Girl Scouts does this is through the Girl Scouts Gold Award. The Gold Award is earned through a take action project where girls learn to make a difference. Sarah Lucker is a local Girl Scout from Lutz, working on her Gold Award Project. When the recent tornadoes hit two elementary schools in Oklahoma, Sarah knew she needed to help the students there. She contacted a guidance counselor in Moore, Oklahoma and asked how she could help. The result is the following list of items which she is collecting to send to Oklahoma: • over the ear headphones • tissues • scissors (round and shape ended) • colored markers (thin and wide) • recess games (cards, board

An Experience of a Lifetime! By Bill Moline If you had told me 14 years ago that Rotary International had travel opportunities, I’m sure I would not have known what you were talking about. Now, it would be a different story; in the last three years I’ve been on a Rotary District Conference cruise, almost went on a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Russia, and, most recently, a four week trip to Taiwan, the Republic of China. The Taiwan trip ranks in the top few of the most exciting things I’ve done in my life; flying helicopters in Vietnam ranks number one.

About Rotary International Rotary International is the oldest (1905) business networking, community and international service organization. It has 1.2 million members worldwide; it’s in over 200 countries and has over 34,000 clubs. This year’s slogan, “Peace Through Service” is very much in tune with the international projects we do. We are about to

eradicate Polio in the world in just a few years; it has taken us more than twenty years to get here, plus $1 billion and thousands of people walking village to village to administer the vaccine to over 2 billion infants. The Rotary International (RI) Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is an all-expense paid, business and cultural exchange between two Rotary Districts – in this case, Rotary District 6890 (Hillsborough, Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties) exchanged teams with District 3520 (Taipei, Taiwan). The teams consist of a Rotarian Team Leader and 4-5 team members who are not Rotarians, not related to Rotarians, are 25-40 years of age, have worked in an industry for several years, and can leave work for 30 days. The last requirement really narrows the field. After I was selected (I had lived in Taiwan over 50 years ago) I had 8 applicants for 4 spots and interviewed all for professional appearance, demeanor, flexibility, willingness to do what it takes to make a good impression in a foreign country and

represent Rotary International.

Understanding the culture When we visit a foreign country, do we really “get a feel” for the culture when we stay in an American hotel and eat at Westernthemed restaurants? In GSE we stayed with Taiwanese Rotarians in their homes and changed hosts every four days. We generally ate breakfast with our host families, lunch with the team and our day hosts and dinner again with our host families. Our days were spent visiting the industries of the team members so they could see how their industry does business in Taiwan, in addition to visiting cultural places like temples, shopping areas, museums, theaters and vacation spots.

Building Relationships To have friends – real friends – in a foreign country, it takes more than a handshake and a smile. Living with them, dining with them,

I got in more than one discussion on topics such as cameras in their down-

My Assessment While Taiwan had changed considerably in the last 50 years since I had lived there, it was all for the better. The Taiwanese people, and in particu-

lar the Taiwanese Rotarians, were the warmest, most generous, kindest, and most humble people I have ever met. In my heart I had always believed that Americans, in spite of our “Ugly American” reputation, were the world’s warmest, most generous and kindest (but definitely not the most humble) people I had known, but now I know we have a long way to go to match the Taiwanese. For example, on one occasion our team was out taking pictures in downtown Taipei and became disoriented. Luckily, his host wrote the address of his condo in Chinese just in case. When he realized that he was lost he asked a passer-by for help. She did not speak English at all but he showed her the address and she walked him 6 blocks to the front door of the condo building. He was blown-away by her kindness. This type of incident actually happened twice – both times resulting in the same outcome. We were simply unprepared for the level of warmth and generosity exhibited by the Taiwanese people. Their economy is also doing well and we met several businessmen and women who own more than one business. My team and I could speak for hours on our experience and are right now making the rounds to Ro-

tary Clubs who want to see our presentation. If you are interested, we also accept offers to speak at other organizations.

Like clockwork, the insurance companies will call, and when they do, it’s best to let an experienced personal injury attorney handle your case. You need an attorney who will always have your best interest in mind and will work hard to fight for your case. “I will ensure the right people are being contacted and the right informa-

GETTING READY FOR THE SAT, ACT, AND BRIGHT FUTURES By Dr. Wayne Adams, Former Dean and Full Professor of a Graduate School of Business Dr. Wayne Adams has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, and Vanderbilt. He is one of the leading tutors in the country.

Fewer subjects are closer to parents’ hearts than finding the best college education for their students at an affordable price. The Bright Futures program has been especially helpful. Unfortunately, the major increases in SAT and ACT score qualification requirements for Bright Futures this year will eliminate about 60% to 70% of applicants in 2013-2014 who would have been eligible last year. In addition, SAT and ACT scores are more critical today for college admission and for academic, athletic, music, and other scholarships. What are these standardized, national examinations? The SAT consists of Writing (Essay and Grammar), Reading, and Mathematics, with a maximum composite score of 2400. The ACT core consists of English (Grammar), Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with a maximum composite score of 36. Each

exam is given multiple times in fall and in spring. Some key observations! Having tutored high school students for five years across the country with thousands of hours of face-to-face experience including general students and all types of athletes: Most students are poorly pre-

pared for these examinations, especially in the areas of essays, grammar, critical thinking so vital in reading, advanced techniques for math, and overall test strategy. As one example, when I ensure students know all the

vocabulary words in an SAT Reading section before starting, their correct answers jump around 50%! Reading the long passage sections on each exam before looking at the questions is, for most stu-

dents, a waste of time. Time is not your friend on these exams. If you know how to approach the math, it can be greatly simplified. For example, recently I tutored a 7th grader who had not had algebra or geometry, and he scored almost 600 on the math section of the actual exam. His composite on the actual SAT Exam for Writing, Reading, and Math was 1780, a 500 point gain from his baseline. Current teaching techniques are ineffective. For example, how can a teacher really know what an individual student needs without baseline testing, identifying the areas to be strengthened, and shaping each program around what each student needs for their maximum improvement? Students do not learn by listening; students learn by doing under expert guidance for individual learning styles. Students need to prepare early to do their best on these exams. I often tutor freshmen, sophomores, and juniors as they prepare for the big exam. And with the SAT, you

can use the highest scores, present the composite to a college, and they will not know these scores came from different exams. On the ACT, you can miss a question without penalty, so guess at them all. Do not do this on the SAT. About Dr. Adams: His students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, UF, FSU, USF, UCF, USC, UCLA, LSU, Ohio State, U Kansas, Boston College, Northeastern, Music Conservatories, and many other outstanding universities, often with academic, athletic, and music/performance scholarships. He has tutored students from Berkley, Central Catholic, Clearwater, Countryside, Dunedin, East Lake, Mitchell, Palm Harbor (regular and IB), and Tarpon Springs High Schools. In addition, he tutors students in California, Texas, and Michigan via SKYPE. Dr. Adams can be reached at 727-253-0639 or email at wwa0811@gmail.com.
