Favorite Pastor Retires from Holy Trinity Lutheran After Nearly 20 Years From the Editor Kim Thomas Long-time pastor, friend and supporter of the community, Pastor Gilbert Kuehn celebrated his final worship service at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (holytrinitylutz.com) on Sun., Apr. 14. Meredith Kleker from the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce was kind enough to send us a beautiful summary of his service to his congregation and to the community. Meredith writes, “He has provided counsel and guidance for hundreds of people and has been supporting the Lutz / Land O’ Lakes communities, including the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce, for nearly 20 years.” During those years, Pastor Kuehn – a native of Milwaukee Wisconsin who graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1969 – was the devoted Pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 20735 Leonard Road. Pastor Kuehn was quoted in 2001 as saying, “Churches need to have a vision.” (St. Petersburg Times, May 19, 2001, Lone Lutheran Church Calls Lutz Home by Angela Miller) During his ministry three additions were competed on the church building as well as the completion of an Activity Center

housing a kitchen and educational facility. Little Lambs Preschool, part of Pastor Kuehn’s vision, provides care and seeks to meet the spiritual and educational needs of children and families in our community. His outreach extended beyond the church grounds, from inviting groups including the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce and local neighborhoods to use the meeting facility, to helping parishioners serve visitors at the Ice Palace (currently the Tampa Bay Times Forum), to encouraging the church youth to participate in service projects and attend two International Youth Gatherings. Attendance at church services since his installation in 1993 has almost tripled. One of the most memorable characteristics of Pastor Kuehn is his consistent concern. When speaking of visiting homebound people the week of Christmas, Reverend Kuehn noted “I don’t stay just 10 minutes; these are special people and I like to spend more time with them at (this) special time of the year…you can never say you are too

busy when you are serving the Lord.” Pastor Kuehn is a friend to the Central Pasco Chamber, so we thought it fitting to add a few upcoming events: Tues., May 14, 7:30 – 9 AM–– General Membership Meeting at Harbor Terrace Restaurant at Heritage Harbor, 19502 Heritage Harbor Parkway in Lutz; cost is $15. Guest speaker is Carol Johns, MBA Small Business Development Center. Wed., May 15, 7:30 – 9 AM–– Wednesday Morning Networking at The Lake House at Hungry Harry’s Bar-B-Que, 3116 LOL Blvd. in Land O’ Lakes; cost $5, includes breakfast. The Dog House – A Dog’s Place to Just be a Dog! By Katie Thomas The Dog House is located right off of shady, oak lined Tarpon Springs Road, and offers dogs a pup-paradise in a lush tropical setting. Boasting over an acre and a half of fenced boarding and play area, The Dog House is the perfect place for your dog to romp, play, socialize and receive individualized attention from experienced trainers and staff. The Dog House is a trusted friend to local dog owners and is a favorite destination for dog boarding, training and daycare since it was opened nearly five years ago by owners Jamie OccHionero and Sony Zorek. “We started with only six dogs,” says Sony. “Thanks to the community and our clients, we have been able to enjoy business growth and are looking forward to expanding in the near future!” From obstacle courses, a swimming pool and self-filling water dishes to digging areas, cage-less suites and inside/outside play areas, The Dog House is brimming with doggone good times! It is actually like a doggie resort where your dog is a cherished guest. Jamie and Sony each have years of

4

experience working with dogs of all breeds, and treat every dog as they do their own – with love! There are no breed restrictions at The Dog House. Jamie says, “We love all dogs and we make sure that we really get to know each dog and how he/she interacts within the pack; from there we pair accordingly with the other dogs for socialization.” The dogs I met while visiting The Dog House truly had great temperaments and happy demeanors and really love their time spent at The Dog House. Customer Blanca Hobana says, “Kaos can’t wait to get to The Dog House EVERY day! He’s always so excited when he sees me getting ready to leave the house because he thinks he’s going to daycare! He plays so hard all day that he’s ready for bed as soon as we get home and he also gets plenty of loving from the awesome staff. If I’m ever traveling, I always board him there as well.” When you first visit The Dog House, one of the professional staff members will have you fill out an enrollment application, which goes on file for safekeeping. The enrollment application verifies vet records, last flea

treatment, updated shot records (bordatella and rabies are required), medication your dog is on (if any), as well as information concerning your dog’s temperament, attitude, behaviors and social skills. Any dogs exhibiting aggressive qualities will not be put with other dogs. This has proved to be extremely successful for maintaining friendliness amongst all the dogs. Additionally, Jamie has spent numerous hours socializing dogs to teach them how to gain and maintain positive relationships with other dogs. Aggressive

dogs have been successfully trained to be calm and friendly with other dogs at The Dog House, but they are not allowed to be with the pack until Jamie and Sony are absolutely sure aggressive behavior is eliminated. Rest assured that your dog is in a safe, friendly and highly conscientious environment. The Dog House lawn is flea treated by Massey every two weeks to protect the dogs. Trees and tropical landscaping offer dogs a place to laze in the shade. We all know Florida gets very hot and it is easy for your dog to

become overheated; the girls at The Dog House are constantly rotating dogs every 15 to 20 minutes from outside areas to inside areas to keep the pups cool and entertained. Misters and outside swimming areas all benefit the dogs from getting too hot, and they absolutely love playing in the water! Each play area is fenced in and for dogs that may be jumpers there is a play pen, where the dog can’t jump the fence or dig. For smaller dogs and puppies, The Dog House sports a puppy area. All the dogs at The Dog House get plenty of exercise, interaction and

are always getting trained. Head trainer Jamie says, “We work towards teaching the dogs while they’re here for daycare or boarding. It’s a continuous process. I believe in preventative training; stopping a problem before it occurs is key to a happy, healthy and well behaved dog.” The Dog House is cage-free optional so your dog will be housed cagefree if you prefer. The cage-free option allows dogs (unless they are aggressive with other dogs) to be kept in open rooms where, despite not being outside, the dogs can still roam as they please. This allows for a unique unforgettable experience for every dog. Of course, kennels are available as many dogs are crate-trained and prefer to nap and rest in their crate.

designed to go even more indepth than basic training and consists of repetition-based activities, teaching your dog very important skills, all while having fun. This program is a great way to improve the relationship between you and your dog and within no time you will see an increase in the strength of the bond that you two share, as proven by the many success stories this program has produced. Costing only $500 (this includes all daycare costs for the month); this month-long program will greatly enhance your dog’s capabilities, helping your furry pal reach his/her full potential. If you enroll in this program, all they ask is that you bring your dog for a minimum of three days a week on Monday through Thursday.

Classes and Training Through Play! The Dog House offers classes for manners, obedience, agility, searchand-rescue, as well as basic training. Jamie and Sony can teach your dog(s) very useful techniques and abilities that will benefit the whole family. The courses last eight weeks and are well worth the time and money. The Dog House also offers an accelerated 30-day training package to further enhance your dog’s socialization skills and obedience. Jamie’s program “Training Through Play” is

Treat Your Pooch to a Bath! In addition to the training packages, bath packages are offered at The Dog House and can be used any day except holidays. A spa-like bath is the perfect gift to give your pet and yourself. There is nothing better than a clean smelling pup to cuddle up with when you get home from work! Up and Coming at The Dog House Jamie and Sony are working on expanding the back yard area. They are planning a 17 x 27 foot private, fenced-

in yards for dogs. The project should be finished by the end of July and will boast brightly colored Key West-style boarding areas for individual dogs to hang out and take a rest from playtime. Each house will contain individual fans, refillable water dishes, toys and more! Look for The Dog House’s ad in Neighborhood News and Lifestyles to find out about upcoming events, such as the Pup Jam to be held at The Dog House, which will feature live bands, food, drinks and puppy fun! You can always visit their facebook and website for upcoming specials, events and deals. The Dog House is truly a pupparadise and your dog’s home away from home! Sony says, “This is a place for a dog to just be a dog!” With constant play, hands-on training, guidance and personalized attention, The Dog House is a great place for your dog. Get the Brands You Love for Less at Encore Boutique & Consignment in Land O’ Lakes By Julie Kanehl Encore Boutique and Consignment has been providing customers with their favorite brands at remarkable prices for five straight years, and now is an even more exciting time to shop at Encore, because they have just doubled their retail space. Encore Boutique and Consignment gives all of us the opportunity to rock brands like Michael Kors, Coach, Vera Bradley, Seven for all Mankind, Guess, Ed Hardy, and Bebe, without breaking the bank. Owner Julie Taylor fell in love with the concept of high-end consignment shopping when she realized the money that she could save when compared to what others were paying for the brands she loved. She just loved that consignment gave her the opportunity to replenish her wardrobe as often as she wanted to – and it’s a fun way to shop! This excitement for finding quality brands at great deals sent her on a quest to find a higher-end

consignment boutique when she moved to the Lutz area years later. Unable to find one nearby, she decided it was time to turn her passion for finding great deals, into providing great deals! Encore Boutique is focused on creating a place for people to purchase high quality, new and gently worn clothing, purses, shoes and accessories. Located at 5132 Land O’ Lakes Blvd, in Land O’ Lakes, Encore Boutique is a beautifully merchandised retail space that offers something for everyone. If you’ve never been in, forget everything you think you know about consignment and instead imagine shopping your best friend’s closet, because that is exactly what this is like. Everything that is sold at Encore Boutique is something you would be proud to wear. In fact, a lot of clothes are turned away. Taylor says, “We have become more selective over the years with our items especially because our shoppers are very selective.” Taylor and her staff, Elaine White,

Sue Irvine, McKenna Smith and store manager Mary Tisdale, truly enjoy helping their customers find what they’re looking for. I mean, who said that tightening our belts had to mean that it couldn’t be a belt made by Guess, Coach or Brighton? At Encore Boutique and Consignment, there is an amazing selection of clothes for any occasion, and in sizes ranging from 00-3X. There are clothes for any and every occasion, all in like-new condi-

tion, from denim jeans made by your favorite designers to gowns perfect for the prom, formals and cruises. From work clothes to clothes fit for a queen, and from high-end sandals to designer handbags, once you’ve shopped at Encore Boutique, you may never hit the mall again. More and more people are interested in doing consignment, and I’ve had several people who have said, “this is my first time in a consignment store,” and then they love it and they come all the time.” She adds, “One customer recently came into the store and bought three Michael Kors purses for the same amount as she might have

paid for just one. If you love accessories and jewelry like I do, you’ll really like the selection of both new and gently worn pieces at Encore Boutique and Consignment. From beautiful silver and gold-tone fashion pieces to gemstones and estate pieces, the jewelry case always catches my eye. One of the best parts about shopping at Encore Boutique is that the store is always being replenished with new finds, top brands and deep discounts. With the extra space at Encore Boutique and Consignment, Taylor dedicated a part of her store to become the “Bargain Boutique,” which is where the already low prices become even lower. The best part is that the brand names and the quality stays the same. Taylor says, “All clearance items are items that have passed the 90-day date, and I discount them. It’s a real deal. It’s not undesirable merchandise by any means; it’s just waiting for the right person.” She explains, “We once had a beautiful pair of Michael Kors shoes that all the ladies wanted to try on, but they never fit. We called them the Cinderella shoes. Finally one day, their rightful owner came in, and she

was delighted! She got them for a steal.” Five years later, Encore Boutique and Consignment is growing and changing the way that women look at consignment. When you shop at Encore Boutique and Consignment you can have the hottest designer jeans, the sweetest shoes on the dance floor, and even a gorgeous name brand bag to match for the price of just one pair of jeans at the department store. Oh, and if you’re a teacher, you’re in luck – Encore Boutique and Consignment offers an additional discount for teach-

ers. There are also coupons in some of the local papers, like the Neighborhood News and Lifestyles paper. So, what are you waiting for? Go see what all of the buzz is about. You may just change the way you look at shopping. Encore Boutique is located at 5132 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. in Land O’ Lakes, and is open: Tues. – Fri., 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Sat. from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; closed on Sunday and Monday. BANGKOK SUSHI A Local Favorite for Traditional Thai Cuisine and Fresh Sushi Delicacies By Katie Thomas Locals rave about Bangkok Sushi, located in the North Pointe Village Shopping Center off of State Road 54. People simply love the traditional Thai restaurant that presents beautifully and freshly prepared menu items. Many agree that the dishes served up at Bangkok Sushi are “too pretty to eat,” but believe me, once you begin eating, your taste buds will be greeted with fresh, perfectly cooked ingredients that will have you thanking Thailand for their original and delicious, traditional fare. Owner John Chieopanich, from Thailand, moved to the United States in 1974 from Bangkok and quickly realized that the food he grew up eating and cooking would be a healthy choice for food enthusiasts. John says, “Thai food has all fresh ingredients. In Thailand we would visit fresh market two to three times a day for our meals. There, the mothers were out cutting

10

fresh herbs and vegetables for every meal. Our kitchen at Bangkok Sushi makes everything fresh from scratch, which allows diners to modify dishes to their liking.” Thai cuisine is known all around the world for its unique taste and health benefits. John is very compassionate about serving healthy meals that have no preservatives, artificial flavors, MSG or other unhealthy additives. “Our Jasmine Rice is steamed with no butter, sugar or salt added. The rice needs no extra boost in taste when paired with our freshmade Thai sauces,” says John. “Thai sauces are light and healthy. The flavor comes from fresh ingredients, spices, herbs and vegetables.” Before visiting Bangkok Sushi, I never realized how many different types of curry are available. John explained how his Chef creates red, panang, green, massamun and yellow curry with a chili paste base. Each separate curry has its own medley of spices in the fresh-made chili paste to

create distinctive flavors (all of which can be spiced down or spiced up to your liking) for a fabulous Thai sauce. John grows many of his own herbs for his kitchen. Thailand has a very Tropical climate, similar to Florida, which allows John to have the ingredients fresh onhand as he would in Thailand. Tampa Bay diner, Bob Potter says, “When my wife and I relocated to Florida, we were Exquisite in dress and manner, Bangkok hoping to find a really good Sushi’s staff provides impeccable service Thai restaurant. Dr Norman – Preserving Your Natural Skin For a Lifetime By Alexis Selby As our largest organ and the protector of everything within, our skin plays a significant role in the harmonious functioning and overall regulation of our body, and as such, it is crucial that we do all we can to preserve it and maintain the healthiest skin possible. Part of this preservation and maintenance often involves seeing a dermatologist. And, regardless of whether you have a specific issue or would just like to get a regular check-up, it is imperative that you find a dermatologist who you can trust; one who, if you should have an issue with your skin, will get to the root of the problem and find out exactly what is going on. For over 20 years, board-certified dermatologist Robert Norman, DO, has been leading the way in the advancement of skin care, and providing patients in the Tampa Bay Area with the very best in dermatological health care. Dr. Norman is extremely knowledgeable in the various facets of medicine and spent many years studying the entire body before centering his focus on the specific field of dermatology. When

14

Dr. Norman first entered into the medical field he started off in family medicine, concentrating on primary care, emergency medicine and geriatrics; it was there that he realized his love for dermatology and continued his education in that field. Dr. Norman specializes in geriatric dermatology, and provides the most innovative treatments in general and cosmetic dermatology to people of all ages. Dr. Norman has such a passion for what he does and it is evident how much he really does care about each and every patient. Dr. Norman says, “I love what I do. People are always very appreciative because they know that I am helping them. I provide a lot of reassurance to people, and that is always a nice thing to be able to do.” His dermatology practice is one of the top practices in the country and one of the very few in the state of Florida to accept Medicaid, which he does solely because he believes everyone deserves the right to have beautiful, healthy skin. Dr. Norman says, “I like taking care of my patients; that’s why I went into Medicine – I wanted to help people. I am one of the few providers that takes Medicaid,

and because of that I see people from all over the state every day. My favorite part of my job is helping people. When my patients leave and express that they are better, that is by far the best reward of what I do.” The list of Dr. Norman’s credentials is truly impressive and his experience and knowledge regarding dermatology, and general medicine for that matter, ranks him among the very best in not only the state of Florida, but the entire country. Dr. Norman is a faculty member for five medical schools and has been honored with numerous service and teaching awards, including Physician of the Year in 2005, Distinguished Service Award in 2007 for Hillsborough County, and Tampa Bay Medical Hero Award in 2008. He has written 23 books, including a textbook on Geriatric dermatology in 2001, the first textbook on preventative dermatology in 2010, and the recently published The Woman Who Lost Her Skin (And Other Dermatological Tales), which is primarily based on articles he has written in Discover magazine, and Mother Nature, Father Time-Tales of Medicine. the body of those excess chemicals and toxins.” The state of Florida requires all Colon Therapists to first be licensed in Massage Therapy before ever enrolling in school. Missy says, “I have so much respect for CTs and MTs in the state of Florida. The program they attend is rigorous and comparable to pre-med A & P classes, which allows the student to really understand how the body works.”

Missy says, “Growing up in California, I was always aware of natural health and lifestyles, but it wasn’t until I became very sick and healed many of my personal ailments that I decided to go back to school. When I was able to heal myself I knew that I really wanted to teach others.” At 27, Missy signed up to attend Nutrition School in Napa Valley and soon after, moved to Florida where while working at Whole Foods in the Nutrition Department, Missy met her role model, Brenda Watson, the proprietor of cleansing products called ReNew Life. “I found that many people were in search of colon cleanses to rid themselves of toxins and heavy metal

In fact, according to a report by WHO, The World Health Organization, ‘1/4 of Global disease is caused by environmental toxins.’ Once I realized this I began searching for my own colon hydrotherapist to further detox my body.” Missy says that after only six colonic treatments she was shocked at how amazing she felt. “I knew then that I wanted to pursue becoming a colon hydrotherapist to help people feel better in the same way I did,” shares Missy. “The truth is our bodies are not designed to endure the daily intrusion of chemicals ingested, from our food to the water we drink and bathe in…colonic therapy helps rid

Upon your arrival, Missy will have you fill out a patient intake form, which will help her understand your medical and health history, as well as your current lifestyle in order to help you receive full benefits from your colonic cleanse. When you are finished with your form, Missy will guide you into her office to have a one-on-one half-hour (or

longer) session that will break down the steps to your treatment, answer any questions you may have and discuss the importance of ridding your body of toxic buildup. At Westchase Colonics, you are set in a completely relaxing atmosphere; Missy truly wants all clients to feel at-ease during visits. Once you finish speaking with Missy, she will lead you into the sauna room where an infrared thermal system awaits. Missy treated me to a 45minute infrared sauna session and the experience was wonderful. My body was relaxed and my mind found peace; you will love the sauna treatment, which allows you to have complete “me” time. What makes the infrared thermal system unique? Infrared radiant energy releases out of panels within the steam-free sauna and penetrate the body’s tissues up to two inches deep; you are literally heated up from the inside. The energy output from the sauna is tuned to correspond with our body’s natural radiant energy and induces 2-3 times more sweat output than a traditional sauna. Missy compares her infrared system to a “medical sweat,” clearing toxins out of the body through the release of a heavy sweat session. The sauna will completely relax you and is a great purification tool before your colonic session. After my sauna treatment, my skin glowed for days; the sauna is an excellent purifier and in-

creases blood circulation – what a wonderful gift! During your sauna treatment you will be in a clean towel, receive water with electrolytes and once you have completely relaxed and sweat out toxins, you will wrap yourself in a new clean, fresh towel and head to the colonic room for further cleansing treatment. Missy says, “We all need to cleanse and be aware of importance of elimination. Here at Westchase Colonics it feels like coming to an Internal Body Cleansing Spa versus a clinic. I want my guests to feel great when they leave here…refreshed, energetic, yet relaxed and definitely lighter!” The colon hydrotherapy session lasts about 45 minutes and the final 10 to 15 minutes is spent in the bathroom to eliminate any excess water as you replenish your system with a delicious dairy-free, electrolyte and probiotic infused beverage. “Seeing someone transform from feeling ill, lethargic and depressed to complete vigor, lightness and vitality is very rewarding,” says Missy. “I understand what it feels like before and after a healthy detox – helping people reach this healthier, lighter feeling is the reason I love, love, love what I do!” The machine used for your closed system colonic treatment is a class two medical device that utilizes gentle pressurized water to clear out the colon from toxins and buildup. The pressur-

ized water works to exercise the colon muscles, which also may unravel any twisting of the colon that may be present and ultimately help to retrain the bowel. All fecal matter within the bowel is toxic. Other problems occur when the excess matter seeps through the colon wall and into other areas of the body. Colon hydrotherapy clears out that excess toxic waste and gives overall improvement to bowel muscles. Three sessions within a 10-day time frame are usually needed to clear the bowel completely. Some may require more sessions, due to many years of medication use and overall poor health that contributes to years of constipation. Missy covers every detail of the program. She even helps you plan a colon-clogging-free diet. Missy says, I am going to be 45 this summer and I feel much healthier and energetic than in my 20s, since I’ve been aware of the importance of healthy cleansing over the last 15 years.” Missy detoxes about twice a year using the same colonic hydrotherapy treatment and protocol her patients receive. If you are looking to improve your overall wellbeing, health and energy, you will be greatly satisfied with the upscale purifying program at Westchase Colonics. Janet from the Westchase area says, “I was nervous at the thought of having a colonic but Missy was so helpful and reassuring. I’m so thankful I can

go to a place where I really feel right at home.” Missy’s dedication to helping people take charge of their health is inspirational. She holds seminars at her office consistently in order to teach people how to better their lives through natural digestive health and detox, and she lectures throughout the Tampa Bay Area from health stores to chiropractic offices to networking events. Clients are constantly learning while visiting Westchase Colonics through literature and discussion, which offers unbeatable prices for the treatment and learning experience you receive. Pasco County Public Transportation Getting People To Where They Want To Go By Marcy Sanford Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) has buses in this area that can help you get where you need to go. Here are a few “Facts on Public Transportation” from the American Public Transportation Association: 1. One-fourth of today’s 75+ age group does not drive, making public transportation a lifeline for older adults. 2. If one in 10 Americans used public transportation regularly, the U.S. reliance on foreign oil could be cut by more than 40%, which translates to the amount of oil we import from Saudi Arabia each year. 3. Emissions from road vehicles are the largest contributors to smog. 4. The National Safety Council estimates that riding the bus is over 170 times safer than automobile travel. 5. Public transportation saves you money.

If you are a senior citizen who is no longer comfortable driving, someone who is interested in helping to make a positive environmental impact, a student without a car who would like to get out of the house this summer, or just someone who is fed up with fighting daily traffic, Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) might be able to help you with your transportation needs. Last year PCPT helped more than a million people get to their destinations.

PCPT operates 18 fixed-route transit buses on ten routes, which include two routes traveling into Northern Pinellas County and one connecting with Hillsborough County. In West Pasco, the service is provided in the northwest area at Denton Avenue in Hudson, eastward to Little Road, and south to Tarpon Springs where there is a connection with the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and also along S.R. 54 from Little Road to the Zephyrhills Town Center. You can see a full map of all the bus routes including route 54 online. Route 54 starts on Little Road at the Medical Center of Trinity and then travels down S.R. 54 to Zephyrhills City Hall. There are stops along the way at Suncoast Crossings where you can shop at Super Target or Petco, or

Along S.R. 54 there are plenty of medical offices, retail shops, and restaurants meaning this bus can take you to any number of appointments, places for entertainment, or potential summer jobs. PCPT is committed to providing efficient, reliable, and cost effective public transportation. To make sure that they are serving the public’s needs, PCPT has held several openhouse style public workshops over the past year. “Our workshops have been very successful,” say Nina Stampli, Program Coordinator for PCPT. “The people who came to the workshops gave us some very valuable input. We also had staff there to answer questions and provide information about all of our services.” Free Ride Days, Student Summer Haul Pass & More! PCPT has several ride free days coming up. “Dentistry” Continued from page 1 Hospital by completing his residency and specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Chris’s parents also are in the dental field, and his beautiful new wife, Robin, is a dentist as well! Dr. Chris is a Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry and his goal is to make every experience at his office a positive one. Trinity Pediatric Dentistry has two experienced Dental Assistants, Susan Horton and Alisha Kirby; both are cross-trained and love working with kids. Dr. Chris says, “My hope is that my patients have a smile on their face when they come in and a smile when they leave.” One local mom said, “I took my daughter to Trinity Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Chris and his staff were so awesome with my daughter. She is normally nervous at the dentist, but she came out smiling and wanting to floss! The office is very cool with flat screen TVs for kids to watch while they get their teeth worked on. They give personal attention to their patients in a positive environment. I highly recommend them!” Families Love Dr. Chris Working with children is a bit of a

26

calling. Ask any teacher, pediatrician or in this case, pediatric dentist, and they’ll tell you that working with kids is something that they are naturally good at, and something that they really enjoy doing. Similarly, while completing his dental training, Dr. Chris rotated through the pediatric program and just knew that was where he belonged. “I’ve always connected and related well to children, and I like to have fun and be myself while I’m at work,” says Dr. Chris. They call me Dr. Elmo because I do Elmo impersonations sometimes. The kids love it.” Dr. Chris actually had a team from Disney come in and decorate his practice, and kids from 1 to 99 get a kick out of that. The artists even added a cartoon version of their puppy, Frisco! He opened Trinity Pediatric Dentistry in August of 2012, and families love that it’s a fun, happy place to come and get those pearly whites taken care of. Parents love Trinity Pediatric Dentistry as well because their focus is on communication, prevention, and taking their time. Dr. Chris says, “Unlike other offices, I won’t double-book my patients. Instead, I book one family at a time, and I do that because I look at parents as part of the team.” He adds, “At each visit I give the parents a handout of information because I’m a resource to the parents. I want to make sure they’re able to assist with brushing and flossing.

Prevention is definitely key.” Trinity Pediatric Dentistry treats patients from infancy until they are 18. Dr. Chris’s recommendation is the same as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, which suggests that children come to the dentist for the first time at about 6 months old to establish a dental home, and to make sure that they are reaching certain milestones. Dr. Chris says, “A lot of it is education, and the early visits are all about making sure that the children are healthy.” Dan takes his children to Trinity Pediatric Dentistry, and he says, “My five children have never liked the dentist until NOW! They all loved Dr. Chris and his staff.” The entire office at Trinity Pediatric Dentistry is laid out in a way to make it family-friendly. Instead of having each patient sit in a separate room, they offer one open treatment area that kids (and parents) don’t find intimidat-

ing. It’s bright, fun and effective! The treatment area offers flat screen TVs for the kids to watch while they get their teeth cleaned, and there’s even a place for siblings to play just adjacent to the treatment area if need be, although it’s the patients themselves who most often go over to play with the iPads and games. Each of the dental chairs are brightly colored and shaped like surf boards, so don’t be surprised if you take your child to the dentist, and they come out talking about how they surfed their way to a no-cavity reward! Kids love rewards so Trinity Pediatric Dentistry uses a point system to help educate and encourage their patients to take care of their teeth. They can earn rewards for positive things outside of dentistry as well, like good grades, staying active and more. They get Trinity Pediatric Dentistry t-shirts, and win cool prizes. Parents can get in on the reward action by recommending Dr. Chris and his staff to their friends! Uh-Oh! Someone Has a Cavity What happens if going to the dentist isn’t just about fun and games and shiny teeth? What if there’s a dreaded cavity? Enter super hero music here, because the truth is that Dr. Chris knows exactly what he’s doing. His office is stocked with all of the latest tools and gadgets that make detecting and taking care of cavities his business. He has digi-

tal x-ray machines, which offer far less radiation than the outdated versions, and he has a few separate Disneythemed rooms where he fills cavities and does more complicated dental procedures when necessary. No matter what, Dr. Chris and his staff keep things light and fun throughout the process. He explains the importance of treating cavities in baby teeth by saying, “Baby teeth serve an important role in a child’s development. Aside from chewing food for proper diet and nutrition, baby teeth are crucial in learning to speak, providing a nice appearance and smile, as well as reserving space for permanent teeth as the child’s face and jaws develop. Because a cavity is an infection of the tooth caused by bacteria the infection can spread, even to your brain, in severe cases. Prevention by brushing and flossing regularly is the key!” While it isn’t usually necessary to use sedation, sedation dentistry is offered at Trinity Pediatric Dentistry. Sedation is endorsed by the American Dental Association and the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry. After all, they are specialists, and if a more extensive procedure is necessary, Dr. Chris and his staff can offer safe choices so that your child does not have to suffer during their treatment. Angela said, “My kids are older, and both kids loved Dr. Chris and his staff.

From a parent’s point of view: very informative, clean, friendly and helpful.” Make an Appointment Dr. Chris is a favorite with families, and while his office hours are traditional, his commitment to his patients isn’t. He even gives his cell phone number to parents, in case they need him in an emergency. A mom named Haley wrote this testimonial on his website, saying, “My 13-month-old daughter fell at home last night. Dr. Chris came in the middle of the night and took care of Lilly. I can’t thank Dr. Chris enough!” Trinity Pediatric Care accepts patients who carry many dental insurances, as well as PPOs. The practice also participates in Care Credit, which is an affordable financial option, so that nothing comes in the way of your children’s oral health. Trinity Pediatric Dentistry is located at 8804 Hawbuck Street in Trinity, in the Trinity Professional Center (corner of Little Rd and Mitchell Blvd). Office hours are 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Mon., Tues., Thurs. & Fri., and 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Wed. For more information or an appointment, please call 727-478-3210.
