Our Partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays = FREE TICKETS FOR YOU!… AGAIN! By Matt Selby April has been a very exciting time of the year for my family and me; not only because our hometown team the Tampa Bay Rays kick off their season, but also because for the second year in a row the Rays have reached out to our company for a “visibility campaign” partnership. Last year, amongst our five magazines, we had a direct mail circulation of over 85,000 households in the Bay area and when the Rays found out we added New Tampa to our distribution, bringing our monthly total to over 110,000 and making us the largest circulation of community magazines in the state of Florida, they were excited to work out another deal with us. Our

online readership has blown up in the past year as well, consistently ranging between 40 and 50,000 individual readers and well over half a million page views! Enough about why the Rays partnered with us, let’s get into what you really care about, and that’s how you can score some FREE Rays game tickets!

FREE TICKETS FOR YOU! Part of our deal with the Rays includes six press level season tickets – one season ticket for each of our six magazines. Even though we have a bunch of family and friends in this area we’ve decided to give away many of our prime press level tickets to our valued readers to show how much we

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

appreciate you. Each month, starting in May and ending in September, we will give away multiple press level (sec.204) Rays’ tickets to six lucky winners a month. Two Grand Prize winners per month will receive six tickets and two parking passes. Two 1st Runner Up winners will get four tickets and one parking pass, and two more 2nd Runner Up winners will have fun at the ball park with two tickets and a parking pass. This contest will be a lot of fun and we are really happy to give back to our readers. You make what we do possible, plain and simple. We wish we could make every entry a winner. Good luck! Call 1-800-GOT-JUNK? The Simple Way to De-Clutter! By Katie Thomas Spring-cleaning time is here and there is no easier way to clean up your space than to call 1-800-GOT-JUNK? for help with removal of unwanted, unnecessary, dust-collecting stuff! If you have junk in Hillsborough, Pinellas or Pasco Counties, it’s time to take a load off and 1-800-GOTJUNK? is the company to call to have it hauled away. Troy and Rachelle White, owners of the Tampa Bay Area 1-800-GOT JUNK? franchise, will partner with you to remove items from your work, home, retail location or construction site. Troy says, “Our friendly professional haulers will handle almost any kind of junk as long as it is non-hazardous. We pick up single items or can handle multiple truckloads of junk for commercial and residential clients. Our friendly, uniformed drivers will do all the lifting for you, clean up and haul your junk away. More than 60 percent of what we haul away is recycled or reused and our haulers will do

10

the sorting for you to determine if something should go to the dump, local charities or recycle centers. We have even taken small boats, engine blocks, sheds and docks. We can take away almost any material we can fit in our trucks, without you ever lifting a finger. We’ll remove junk from wherever it’s located and we won’t leave a dent or speck of dirt behind!” Clutter-Free is a Good Thing! I recently began the process of moving and it’s astounding how much junk a single gal with no kids can have! I can’t imagine the hassle it would be with a growing family! We are constantly reminded – on the Internet, the TV, and even the magazines lining shelves in the checkout line – that it is beneficial to minimize clutter and organize our lives, to have open, airy spaces. Well, this is easier said than done, especially without a truck! The answer is 1-800-GOTJUNK? The company has the truck (or trucks if you really have a lot of junk!) and considers no job too big or

For Ad Info 727-943-2946 • www.NNLFlorida.com

too small. If you are looking to downsize your junk to make more room for yourself and your family, this business is ready to help you recycle, donate, and clean out your junk! 1-800GOT-JUNK? makes the process of attaining a clutter-free home easier! Most of the time, when it comes to excess stuff, we hold on to it “just in case.” If you aren’t sure about an

MAY 2015

item, ask yourself a few questions. Have I used this in the last six months? (Or, for some of us, in the last six years?) Am I keeping this out of obligation or expectation? Do I have more than one of these? Am I holding onto a broken item to fix one day? Is this item worth the time I spend cleaning it? Is this item worth the space it is taking up, and can I use this space for something better?

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

No job too big or too small!! Just call 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and point out the items you would like to have hauled away and they take care of the rest! If you want the simplicity of unburdening your life from unnecessary stuff, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? literally lightens your load! One of the coolest things about 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is that the company recycles and donates a lot of the items collected, so you can feel good that your usable items will not end up in a landfill, but rather will find a new home or purpose.

Troy says, “The best part of owning this business is the opportunity we have to help out in our own backyard. It has allowed us to give back to the community in a way we never dreamed. Many of the items we pick up get donated through Salvation Army, Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity.” 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has saved more than 2.4 billion pounds of junk

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

from the landfill, nationwide. That is absolutely incredible! Troy says, “All you have to do is point out to us what you don’t want anymore and we do the rest. From the sorting to the recycling to the hauling, we make sure your stuff ends up where it should, whether that is at a donation center for charity, the recycling center or repurposing center. We take care of it all, so you can focus on creating more space for you and family.” 1-800-GOT-JUNK? offers upfront pricing, there are never any hidden costs or fees, and you always receive a free estimate. Usually, 1-800GOT-JUNK? is able to provide sameday service, so you can begin living clutter-free immediately! Troy and Rachelle take pride in their ownership of Tampa Bay’s 1800-GOT-JUNK? franchise and have won both Customer Service of the Year and Franchise of the Year awards. Rachelle says, “We are truly committed to providing our customers with the best service out there with up-front rates, on-time service, professional haulers, and courteous employees.” Troy adds, “We appreciate that this community has welcomed our business, which is why we try to give

back in any way we can. We have been active in various charity programs to help Hillsborough County and Pinellas County Schools, Hillsborough County Neighborhood Associations, Youths Empowered to Achieve, Keep Hillsborough and Pinellas County Beautiful and Attention Home for abused children.” The removal of unwanted junk helps to keep our cities looking clean and beautiful and 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is the company to call to clean out the mess left from foreclosures, tenant clean-outs and other junk removal to improve the appeal of properties. There is no time like the present to simplify life and clean out the clutter! Call 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, the best junk hauling service in the area. To schedule a free estimate of your junk removal, call 1-800GOT-JUNK (1-800-468-5865) or visit on the Internet at www.1800gotjunk.com/tampa. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? strives to offer same-day estimates and same-day removal services throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas Counties.

Wendy Fit Yoga and Pilates Studio Training Your Mind & Your Body for More Than a Decade Wendy O’Lenic, owner of Wendy Fit Yoga and Pilates Studio, opened the doors of her first studio in September of 2005 in Tampa Florida with the unique concept of offering yoga, Pilates and cardio group classes in one room and private Pilates and group classes on the equipment in another room. This concept catered to all types of individuals and all levels of fitness. Wendy Fit’s clients also appreciated that the studio also offered massage and acupuncture. The concept was a hit! In July of 2013, Wendy Fit moved to East Lake Woodlands Shopping Center located right on the corner of Eastlake Road and Tampa Road. “It was the best move we ever made,” says Wendy. Wendy Fit is now offering more group classes, with private training available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as massage and acupuncture, and a boutique where you can shop for yoga clothing and gifts. Wendy Fit is a sanctuary for

health and healing for your mind and body. The certified yoga teachers strive to help clients with body awareness, understanding how the body and mind work together and how to deal with stress along with other self-destructive symptoms. There are NO contracts or membership fees. All levels of practice are invited from beginner to the more advanced. Wendy Fit is open seven days a week with morning, afternoon and evening times available. “Come in for a visit and see our complete Strength Training Studio offering the latest in functional training, weight management and a full studio of Pilates apparatus,” says Wendy. “The Reformer, MVe Chair, Barrel and Trapeze Table are designed to work you from the inside out, top to bottom, and front to back. This class is like a mini-retreat and is a wonderful, soul-nurturing way to recharge towards the end of the week. Wendy describes the BUTI Yoga® class as the place where “OM” meets “OMG!” BUTI Yoga® combines various styles of Hatha yoga with tribal-influenced dance sequences and plyo-metric moves to keep the heart rate up, free the female spirit and UNLEASH YOUR INNER WARRIOR! Wendy says, “It will not only transform your physical body, but will touch your soul! In BUTI Yoga® classes, the focus on spiraling movements aims at unlocking the Shakti Spiral as well as, releasing the hips to help energy flow

freely in the 1st and 2nd chakras. Layer that with a power flow Hatha yoga, tribal dance and strength moves and it equals a way to disperse blocked energy to awaken your goddess!” In addition to various types of yoga classes, aerial yoga and Pilates, there are many restorative and meditation classes offered for those who need more peace in their life. Integrity Garage Door Service, Previously Discount Garage Door Services, is the Same Family-Owned, Family-Trusted Company By Katie Thomas Integrity Garage Door Service is the new name of Discount Garage Door Services, a well-known and respected, licensed and insured familyowned business that has been serving Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties since 1982, providing prompt, reliable service and helping with every garage door need, from repairs and parts, to complete replacements and installations. Owners Michael and RosAnne Manning and their son Jason are longtime Palm Harbor residents – Michael and RosAnne have been here nearly 40 years, raised Jason here, and built their business here. The Manning family set a high standard of integrity in their work, which is why they decided on a name change that would reflect their commitment. Jason explains, “We are

changing our name to Integrity Garage Door Service to avoid confusion with other garage door companies and we feel that the name more accurately portrays our company.” The family works together to run every aspect of their business and has built a solid reputation on the oldfashioned values of respect, honesty, exceptional service and quality products. This family owned and operated business also is family-trusted. I know because when my parents needed new garage doors, my mom knew exactly who to call. Kim Thomas says, “I met Michael, RosAnne and Jason Manning back in 2009 when Neighborhood News & Lifestyles first ran an article for them. I was impressed with the great work ethic and care for their customers they had. Michael was teaching Jason the business back then and he

was such an impressive teen. Here it is nearly six years later, and when we needed new garage doors, I knew I could trust Michael and Jason to install a great product at a very fair price. Over the years, they have continued to advertise with Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and we’ve never heard anything but good feedback from their customers. Jason still has impeccable manners and workmanship, but no longer a teen, he is now a young man taking a lead role in the family business. I spoke with Michael who came out and met with my husband. Jason came and installed our new garage doors, and did an excellent job. He left the area completely clean, taking all of the debris from the old doors away.” Michael brings more than 25 years of experience in the construction industry to Discount Garage Door

Jason Manning Services, now Integrity Garage Door Service, and, as in the best of familyowned businesses, Michael has spent

and share knowledge with the customer about garage doors and how they work. From there we will discuss different ways to rectify the situation based on their budget and expectations. After the repair is over and everyone is happy, we return yearly to inspect and service the garage door to ensure optimal operation.”

years teaching Jason everything he needs to know to not only provide great service to their customers but also to eventually take over the family business. Jason has already accumulated nine years of experience in repairing, replacing and installing garage doors, but looks forward to finding ways to reach even more customers and says he is great excited about the prospect of eventually running the business. When you call Integrity Garage

Door Service, you always speak to an owner, usually Michael or RosAnne, as Jason is usually out on jobs. The company believes in connecting with customers right from the start. “Our first interaction with the customer is over the phone,” says Jason. “That’s where our customers tell me they’ve made their final decision to go with us based on how satisfied they are with Michael (my father) over the phone. From there I will go out and meet the customer in person. I offer explanations

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Keep Your Garage Doors Working Properly and Safely Many homeowners use their garage doors more than they use their front door and they don’t even realize it, until they need a repair. Most of Integrity Garage Door Service’s customers need repair work rather than replacement. Michael says, “Many of the bigger franchise companies in the industry will come to your home and try to sell you a new garage door. We repair the door if possible, which will save you time and money.” Most garage doors break because of faulty springs, which also can be quite dangerous. Integrity Garage Door Service uses only highest quality products in the industry. Michael says, “We only use galvanized steel springs, which come with a lifetime replacement from the manufacturers. When we replace garage door springs with

galvanized steel springs our customers basically never have to worry about replacing their springs again.” Galvanized steel does not rust or corrode; exactly what Florida homeowners need to beat Florida’s humidity. The safest springs are torsion springs, which Integrity Garage Door Service can install for you. Extension springs do not wear equally and can be a major hazard if they break; torsion springs, on the other hand, wear equally on both sides and provide vibration control, which makes your garage door much quieter, and much safer! Integrity Garage Door Service provides same-day service and they have a flat-rate fee including weekends and holidays. The company offers free service calls with a repair. Right now, Integrity Garage Door Service is offering $75 off a repair, $100 off a single door and $200 off a double door! Integrity Garage Door Service, previously Discount Garage Door Services, is open seven days a week, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m., and can be reached at 727-504-4948. The East Lake Eagles are Registering for Youth Football and Cheer! By Julie Kanehl If you are a local parent who has children between the ages of 4 and 14, you’re going to want to check out the East Lake Youth Football and Cheer Organization (ELYFC), commonly known as the East Lake Eagles! This amazing program helps kids learn how to play football (both flag and tackle depending on age), and offers an awesome award-winning cheer program. There’s no better way to teach teamwork and good sportsmanship than to join a league like the East Lake Eagles! The East Lake Eagles are now accepting registrations for summer camp, a free speed and agility football clinic in May and, of course, the 2015 season that starts at the end of July. The East Lake Eagles began as the East Lake Bandits in 1982, and since then they’ve grown to become a staple in the community. Part of the Suncoast

Youth Football Conference, each season there is typically 170 football players and 80 cheerleaders participating in the programs. The East Lake Eagles play and practice at the East Lake Youth Sports Complex, located at 3555 Old Keystone Road in Tarpon Springs. There, kids of all ages and their families do more than play ball and practice routines, they create memories that last a lifetime and form friendships that last throughout the years. The East Lake Youth Sports Complex is a private facility that until this year had not received any public funding. The County funding only covers land and lighting maintenance. All equipment costs and day to day operations is paid for by fundraising and volunteers, so as a result, many of the parents become volunteers and those volunteers are what set this organization apart. Their dedication to the program, to the grounds of the sports

complex, and to the East Lake Eagles families is what makes for such a fun and popular sports program. Current president Adam Gorecki says, “We have a great volunteer organization here,” adding, “it really feels like a family.” Parent Dianna Thiel says, “This is an all around wonderful organization. They have wonderful parental support, well-behaved kids, and encourage good sportsmanship.” And Let Them Play Ball! Football, That Is! Football is great for creating a team environment and allowing children to enjoy the outdoors while participating in a sport that they grow up watching on TV. Far more than a

game, football programs teach kids to take direction, and how to work towards a common goal. It also teaches leadership, raises self-esteem and gives growing boys an excellent outlet for their energy! The East Lake Eagles offer an excellent environment for children to learn the ropes of the game, one that is safe, positive and fun. Flag football is designed for children between the ages of 4-7. This is a no-contact sport, and allows the children to learn the strategies of the game and to have a great time. The older kids get to play tackle football, and the coaches and volunteers with the East Lake Eagles make safety the highest priority. Board member Raul Treto says, “We’re one of the few programs that

does a lot of research to protect our players. Protecting our kids is our highest priority. We send all of our equipment to Riddell regularly to make sure they are in working order. If it’s not deemed good enough to be on the field, they don’t send it back.” Gorecki adds, “We just ordered 30 new helmets as well and replaced the pads for our players.” Put Some Cheer in Your Girl’s World! Being a cheerleader is a sport with the finesse and timing of dance, blending both fitness and dance into one awesome activity! Cheer encourages

both teamwork and leadership skills, hones balance and coordination, and on top of that, is loads of fun! Last year, the East Lake Eagles Cheer Squad did an amazing job at competition. East Lake Eagles Cheer Director, Angie Berry, says, “We competed in three competitions, won three First Place Divisional trophies; three National Champions awards, and one Grand Champion award. They did unbelievable, and I couldn’t be prouder!” One Week Only – Football & Cheer Camp For one week and one week only, June 8–11 from 6:30–8:30 p.m., the

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

East Lake Eagles are hosting a football and cheer camp for kids between the ages of 4 and 14! For just $77 for the week, the kids will have fun, exercise and meet new friends, plus it’s a great opportunity for kids and families alike to come and see what the East Lake Eagles are all about! For children under the age of 7, flag football is the name of the game, and it’s a great opportunity for the little ones to learn the rules of the game! For boys, ages 7 -14, the coaches carefully introduce the children to tackle football, and the girls learn a variety of well-choreographed cheer routines. East Lake Eagles Youth coaches Rob Montie and Angie Berry will conduct the camps. Each of the participating campers will receive a camp T-shirt, Gatorade and a snack (typically hot dogs or pizza) at the end of practice. All proceeds from the $77 participation fee benefit the East Lake Eagles Youth Football and Cheer programs. Cheer Director Angie Berry has this advice for kids, “If you love to cheer, you’re just the person we’re looking for! At the East Lake summer cheer camp, you’ll learn dances, stunts, cheers, chants, jumps and other fun cheerleading activities! This camp

is designed for cheerleaders of all abilities. No one is pushed beyond his/her ability and all instruction is conducted in a positive, supportive atmosphere. You’ll improve more than you ever thought possible!” Free Football Clinic on May 30th! The East Lake Eagles will be sponsoring a free clinic on May 30th, offering age-appropriate training, including an introduction to football, the importance of speed and agility, and advanced football skills for the older players. This is a great, free opportunity for you and your child to get a feel for what the East Lake Eagles are all about, and the football officials and coaches will be on hand to answer your questions. The East Lake Eagles Youth Football and Cheer Organization (aka The East Lake Eagles) play at the East Lake Youth Sports Complex, at 3555 Old Keystone Road in Tarpon Springs. Donna’s Cleaning Angels 727-942-8289 24 Years of Steller Cleaning. Simply the best! Surprise! Company is coming. Are you ready? Or, will you have to cancel all plans, call in sick and do an emergency hide-and-slide, and notso-thorough cleaning? If you are ready for your home to be companyready, or sparkling clean for your own enjoyment, call Donna’s Cleaning Angels. You’ll love the results after a team of the angels tackle the dirt and grime of everyday living, leaving your home sparkling clean. Your cleaning angels will leave no dust behind! Donna’s Cleaning Angels has heard the demands of customers for expanded services and now offers personal organization of your home, window cleaning, grout cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning, pressure wash cleaning and painting, mobile auto detailing, and even concierge services. “We want to be everything our customers need us to be. We are their go-to company for all cleaning needs,” says owner Donna Ferrante. Donna’s Cleaning Angels is a local, full-service cleaning company whose seeds were planted with love 24 years ago by Donna Ferrante. First it was love of family and the need for extra money that prompted the single mother to start a small side business cleaning houses. Love of family grew to love of clients and the self-fulfillment that comes from doing for others. Donna’s kids even helped out in the early years – her son, then 11, and his friend put fliers on cars at the Sunday services. Feeling that she’d found her true purpose, Donna devoted herself to growing her client base. She saw that by providing a stellar cleaning service, she was instrumental in helping people to enjoy their homes again. At one of her first cleaning jobs, she bonded with an elderly lady under Hospice care and she was the inspiration behind the name of the company. Donna is still emotional as she recalls bonding with her client and giving her a crystal angel. Just before passing, the lady referred to Donna as her cleaning angel. Years later, after falling and breaking her ankle, Donna hired her first employee. Now, bigger and better than ever, with 22 employees and

20

24 years later, Donna has built the number one cleaning service in Tampa Bay, which offers exceptional service and a superior outcome. The fully licensed, bonded and insured company provides you with a team of “cleaning angels” who are background checked, drug-free and covered by worker’s compensation. They also adhere to all OSHA rules. This is important for Donna’s employees’ protection, as well as her clients’ protection. “I have one customer who [previous to hiring Donna’s Cleaning Angels] had hired an individual who did not carry workman’s compensation,” explains Donna. “This person was not wearing non-slip shoes and ended up falling while cleaning the shower and hitting her head sustaining a serious injury. She sued the homeowner and won. My clients don’t have to worry about that because I carry the liability.” Donna’s Cleaning Angels work as a team, and they are always presentable and friendly, with matching uniforms and nonslip shoes. They bring everything they need to provide you with an exceptional cleaning. Donna explains, “My teams come in with a large canvas kit with all of their cleaning supplies, all of which are of the highest quality and kept in separate plastic bags. The cleaning teams are trained on what products to use. We never use bagless vacuums because they are unsanitary. Our vacuums are commercial grade, and include a stair vacuum, an upright vacuum and a canister vacuum. The bags are changed often and they are checked and wiped down before every clean.” Donna continues, “I offer a very unique and personable cleaning service. My teams spend twice the time as other services for less money. There is a lot more to providing a good cleaning service than just the cleaning. It’s the care and professionalisms that comes from all of us, from management, to the scheduling, down to the teams who really care about doing a great job.” The cleaning teams check off a list, covering everything from baseboards to the ceiling fans to the stainless steel hood over the stove. team leader is on every job. “The girls are happy when they work together,” says Donna. “It’s safer for them and they have good energy together.” Plus, the teammates hold each other accountable and checks behind each other to make sure nothing is missed. Comment cards, meetings with the staff, and client calls to make sure the job was done correctly also help ensure customers are not only happy with the first cleaning, but every cleaning with Donna’s Cleaning Angels. The angels clean the Florida homes of folks from as far away as Alaska and even Canada! “This is not a cleaning service that is done at four o’clock,” says Donna. “My office manager Maria – who by the way is outstanding - and I are here from seven a.m. until eight or nine at night. I have been doing this for 24 years and I have plenty of references to provide people with, not only from customers but from many businesses in the area who know of me because I support other local businesses and restaurants.” Michael and Sandra Morris of Eastlake- have been using Donnas Cleaning Angels of over four years “ my husband and I lived in ten different states and have always used a regular cleaning service. By far donnas cleaning angels are the best we have used, they are very detailed, professional and go above and beyond to meet our needs. We love the peace of mind we have because Donnas Cleaning Angels are licensed, bonded, insured and carry Workmens comp. We would recommend them to anyone!” Donna has had many articles in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

and says there are a lot of times when people find out the name of her business and say, “Oh I hear good things about your service.” She says, “I have one client who told me she’d been reading my stories for five years. She said, ‘I knew that one day when I needed to hire a cleaning service, it would be you.’ Then she gave me a big hug and said that she felt like she’s known me for a long time.” People like knowing Donna’s background and the work ethic she learned from her hard-working Italian and French Canadian family in the small town of Gorham, in the white mountains of New Hampshire where her family has owned an Italian restaurant for over 67 years. Donna explains, “The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. I am proud and honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. We know how to cook, cleanand we give 100 percent to the business.” Reflecting, Donna says, “At the end of the day I thank God for my blessings – the great people who work for me, a great business, my health, my home, my loved ones and my family. God bless you all.” Cleaning Angels services Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. Gift certificates are available.

The Law Office of Charles S. Philips Helps You Understand How to Protect Yourself Under Florida’s No-Fault Law By Kim Thomas None of us want to ponder the possibility of being personally injured, or having a loved one injured, due to another person’s negligence. Unfortunately, it happens to families every day so it’s important to know your rights under Florida’s No-Fault law. I remember feeling terrified upon learning that our daughter’s car was struck by a vehicle running a red light at a Pasco County intersection. Seeing the crash, it was obvious her car was a total loss. My husband and I were anxious to lay eyes on our girl, who thankfully seemed okay, though bruised and shaken. Not sure of what to do, but knowing that I wanted my daughter’s rights protected in case she showed symptoms in the hours and days following the crash, I contacted The Law Office of Charles S. Philips, located in New Port Richey. Attorney Chuck Philips took time with us, explained the law to us, and thankfully, we ended up not needing legal representation. That was years ago, but then and now, Chuck Philips is respected and trusted by me, my work associates, and by many in the community. His innate kindness juxtaposed with his ability to turn up the heat in your case, either through legal argument or by filing a lawsuit, makes him unique and a good man to have in your corner if you need legal representation. He thoroughly evaluates individual cases and gives clients a realistic view of the possible outcome and their ability to recover financial compensation for injury, including lost work time, pain and suffering, and medical bills. With more than two decades of

22

professional experience in Pasco and Pinellas Counties, Chuck Philips understands the ins and outs of Florida traffic laws and insurance claims. He served as a former Assistant State Attorney in Pinellas County for a total of approximately five years both in Traffic and Misdemeanor Divisions as Lead Trial Attorney, and also served as Felony Division Assistant for 2-1/2 of those years. Plus, his past experience as an Insurance Defense Attorney gives him an insider’s knowledge of the insurance companies, and how they handle claims. Additionally, for the last 20 years he has represented those who have been injured in an accident. In short, Attorney Philips has a unique perspective that he uses to his clients’ advantage in his practice. Through his experience in helping victims of auto accidents, Attorney Philips finds that many people are unaware of their rights under Florida’s No-Fault Law, which underwent important changes in 2013. The Law Office of Charles S. Philips kindly shared the following information about the Florida No-Fault Law with Neighborhood News & Lifestyles’ readers. Understanding Florida No-Fault Florida No-Fault requires each individual to self-insure for auto accident-related injuries, lost wages and medical bills. Florida drivers do this through purchasing Personal Injury Protection (PIP) as part of their auto insurance coverage. Florida insurance law only requires two types of coverage, each in the amount of $10,000. They are: Property Damage Liability Coverage (to repair someone’s property when we are at fault) and PIP (to pay our own accident-related medical expenses at 80%) up to $10,000. In

For Ad Info 727-943-2946 • www.NNLFlorida.com

general, Florida does not require the purchase of Bodily Injury Liability coverage, which is coverage that would pay for bodily injury to the other party when we are at fault. Therefore, when someone says they are “fully insured” in Florida, it does not necessarily mean they have anywhere near adequate coverage for themselves, or others. Attorney Philips says, “We are constantly asked by clients why their insurance company has to pay for their medical expenses, when the other party was clearly at fault. The answer is simple. Florida law requires it to be done that way.” Additionally, even though the minimum PIP required in Florida is $10,000, a PIP deductible can be purchased up to $1,000, under the current law. What You Need to Know About PIP Following an auto accident, you must seek medical treatment within 14 days. Generally, for the first visit following an accident, PIP allows you to see any doctor of your choosing, unlike an HMO or managed care plan, which may limit or dictate your choice. When you visit your treating doctor, advise them that you are there because of an auto accident and provide them the information from your auto policy. Your PIP coverage will pay for 80% of the “reasonable and customary” expenses related to your treatment, and you will begin to accrue an unpaid balance of the 20% not covered by PIP. After the initial visit (must be within 14 days of the accident), a medical opinion must be rendered by a medical doctor, doctor of osteopathic medicine, dentist, physician’s assistant,

MAY 2015

or registered nurse practitioner that the accidentrelated injuries constitute a need for immediate medical attention because of an Attorney Chuck Philips “emergency medical condition” which is defined as a medical condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity, which may include severe pain, such that the absence of immediate medical attention could reasonably result in any of the following: 1) serious jeopardy to patient health; 2) serious impairment to bodily functions; 3) serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. The determination of an “emergency medical condition” cannot be made by a chiropractic physician as per the statutory requirements. If this medical opinion is not rendered, then the insured will be limited to $2,500 in PIP benefits. However, if the requirement is properly met, then the insured will be entitled to the maximum of $10,000 in PIP coverage benefits. If treatment is not sought within the initial 14 days after the accident, then the insured will be precluded from obtaining any PIP benefits. Another change: Massage therapy and acupuncture treatments have been excluded from the PIP statute and will not be covered treatment under the PIP coverage. If you have Medical Payments (MP) coverage on your auto policy, it

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

will pay the 20% (that PIP won’t cover) as it is incurred. If you have no MP coverage, the 20% becomes part of your claim against the at-fault party’s Bodily Injury Liability coverage and will be included in any final settlement with the insurance company. While waiting for your case to settle, your doctor may request that you sign a Letter of Protection (LOP). This is an assurance by you and your attorney that the unpaid expenses will be paid out of the settlement of your claim. Any request for a LOP by your doctor should be discussed with your attorney before you sign. You may receive treatment under PIP until your benefits are exhausted or are terminated by your insurance company following an independent medical examination (IME). The settlement of your Bodily Injury Liability claim at the conclusion of your case does not affect your ability to receive treatment using your PIP. They are completely unrelated. In the event that an individual’s IME recommends no further treatment, yet there are ongoing medical issues, it’s imperative to have a knowledgeable and experienced attorney like Chuck Philips on your side to offer sincere and straightforward legal advice regarding whether you should

sue your PIP carrier to continue your benefits. Lost Wages Under PIP Should your treating physician write an order or prescription taking you off work for any period of time after an auto accident, your PIP will pay you 60% of your average weekly wage. Your employer will be asked to prepare a Wage and Salary Verification form showing your gross wages for the 13 weeks preceding the accident. This completed wage verification form must be submitted to your PIP carrier, and the PIP carrier must begin providing the PIP wages within 30 days of submission of the completed wage loss application, Wage and Salary Verification and physician off-work slips. The 40% of your wages not covered by PIP becomes part of your damages claim against the at-fault party’s insurance company. The at-fault party’s insurance carrier will make a one-time, lump sum settlement payment to you, which will include all of your damages. PIP Limits People typically select $10,000 for their PIP Limits on their auto insurance, although higher limits are available. It’s important to remember that every bill you incur will reduce your

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

benefits. Be proactive and aware of what you are being charged for, the necessity of your treatment and its frequency. You have a limited amount of PIP benefits to pay for your medical bills and lost wages and once your limit is reached, your insurance company’s obligation to you is exhausted. Following an accident, your treating doctor may order you not to work because of your injuries, and this could be for an extended period. It may be in your best interest to request that your PIP insurer reserve your PIP benefits to pay your wage loss before paying medical bills. Otherwise, medical expenses submitted by providers could be paid first and diminish or eliminate the PIP funds that could be used to pay for your lost wages resulting in greater financial hardship for you. You may continue to obtain treatment under your PIP, health insurance plan or Medicare after your case is settled. Settlement with the at-fault party or under your own un-insured/underinsured motorist coverage does not terminate your right to continued treatment. However, your right to continued treatment under PIP is limited by the amount of benefits you chose (generally $10,000), and could be terminated following an Independent Medical Examination (IME).

However, barring an IME termination, you may treat under your PIP for 3 years, so long as you need treatment or until benefits are exhausted. That is why monitoring your expenses is important so that your benefits are not used unwisely and prematurely. Motorcyclists are not covered under Florida No-Fault, so they are excluded from the requirement of carrying PIP; however, Attorney Philips suggests that all motorcyclists purchase motorcycle insurance coverage in order to protect themselves in an auto accident claim because they cannot count on the at-fault party having sufficient Bodily Injury Liability as part of their insurance. disability. Even if you don’t have a diagnosis, Brain Balance is willing to help. Brain Balance doesn’t believe in simply trying to “catch kids up.” Their goal is to get to the root of the problem, and the problem usually can be found in a “disconnect” between the two hemispheres of the brain. Scientifically, if the two halves of the brain are not working together properly, there can be issues with communication including: speech and cognitive understanding; the inability to pick up on social cues and contexts; visual-spatial concerns; body and motorskill issues; and problems focusing. After entering the program and being assessed, Brain Balance provides a wide range of tools that can help your individual child learn to succeed. The program includes Nutritional Counseling Sessions, weekly sensory motor and cognitive exercises, daily core exercises at home, and school/teacher meetings. It’s a commitment that many families travel all over the country to make, and we are blessed to have one of the top Brain Balance Achievement Centers right here in our back yard. You don’t have to feel like your child is slipping through the cracks. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar can help. While the Brain Balance program sees K-12

kids year-round, there is a threemonth summer program beginning shortly that is a great chance for parents to experience what Brain Balance has to offer. It is a great opportunity for your child to take part in an individual comprehensive program to get your child back on track and ready for the new school year. This three-month, 36-session program should be completed in time for your child’s regular fall school schedule. One parent said, “Brain Balance has improved our lives immensely! “Crystal Nail” Continued from page 1 In fact, one regular customer named Joan who loves to come to the salon with her sister Roberta, said, “I’ve been going to Johnny for quite a few years; in fact, I went to Johnny when he did manicures, before he owned his own shop! I looked for him all over town and finally found him here. We went crazy looking for him!” Adding, “This is the place to be. We love Johnny!” Joan’s sentiments are not unique – in fact, everyone who enters the busy salon seems to be welcomed by name and completely at-home. On any given day, the salon is hopping with both men and women. I think the gig is up, ladies, our guys are starting to realize just how fantastic these pedicures feel, and many couples are making it a point to come into the salon together to relax and chat. Before owning Crystal Nail & Spa, Johnny worked in nails for many years, starting in the early 90s and working all over the Tampa Bay Area at seven different salons before opening his own. He gained a lot of experience and owned a smaller salon near

Crystal Nail & Spa has the facilities and the staff to easily accommodate customers without rushing. My favorite is the Hot Buttered Rum Pedicure. I mean, with a name like that, I had to try it! After soaking my feet in rum scented water, Jenny smoothed away all the dry, rough spots using a mixture of hot buttered rum scrub and actual Bacardi rum! The spices and the brown sugar worked magic on my skin, coupled with the cocoa butter massage, the hot stone massage, and the steam from the hot towels that allowed all of those beautiful ingredients a chance to just soak into my skin. Let me just say, that this was the best pedicure I’ve ever had. I felt pampered, relaxed and rejuvenated at the same time. My toes were polished to perfection, and I feel like I have brand new feet!

“Hot Tuna” Continued from page 1 restaurants have been so successful – the menu selections are fabulous and the preparation of the food is exquisite; not to mention their prices are very affordable and the amount of food you get for the price means you can afford to feed your family a quality meal and still have enough left over to get dessert! Hanh takes a very hands-on approach to running her restaurant. She says, “I am here all the time – this restaurant is very important to me. I am here to make sure everything is done right. If we wouldn’t eat it ourselves we won’t serve it. We pride ourselves on our cleanliness and feel good knowing that what we serve is not only good, but good for you.” Hanh runs her restaurant with the help of her husband Luu, daughter Hien, and son Duc, who creates sushi on the weekends and makes all 30 of their unique sauces, which are freshly made at Hot Tuna. Taking a look at the menu at Hot Tuna, you are sure to be impressed. Offering so much more than just sushi – although their sushi menu is absolutely fantastic – Hot Tuna offers

a diverse selection of masterpieces for every taste and palate. Hanh says, “Quite often when you have a group of people, there are one or two guests who don’t like or have never tried sushi. Because of this, we strive to offer many options, so people in your party aren’t feeling left with only sushi to choose from. We are more than just a sushi restaurant, we have lobster, steak, teriyaki bowls and other tasty entrées.” However, after seeing some of the spectacular sushi rolls, even if you aren’t a fan of sushi I have a feeling you might change your mind. Hot Tuna has so many different rolls to choose from, including those that even the pickiest of palates can enjoy! So even if you think you might not like sushi, I can almost guarantee you will find something that you’ll love. But, if I’m wrong, and sushi really isn’t your thing, not to worry, because as stated before they have plenty of other options to satiate your hunger! Their selection of appetizers alone is grandiose. From lettuce wraps, chicken wings, mussels and eggrolls to panko crusted crab cakes, crab Rangoon and steamed edamame, they offer a little bit of everything. On our previous visit my husband and I had their stuffed mushroom

caps – tempura button mushrooms stuffed with their signature spicy tuna mix and topped with garlic and a teriyaki drizzle. All I can say is wow – they were that good! The juicy mushrooms were perfectly complemented by the crunchy outer layer and the spicy tuna inside provided just the right amount of zing and flavor, which was enhanced by the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce. With a generous portion size, this appetizer is perfect for sharing, although as with ours, I’m sure it will be devoured in no time! Moving on to the entrees, the

options are just as plentiful as the appetizer selection, offering tantalizing choices such as grilled Main lobster tail, panko crusted pork chops, Tokyo stir-fry, sautéed scallops and New York Strip steak. Hanh recommended we try the seared Ahi tuna – sushi grade Ahi tuna, seared to perfection with Asian seven-spice and a miso–garlic drizzle. Lightly cooked on the outside and tender on the inside, you could taste the freshness of the fish; this is definitely a quality catch! Served alongside yummy grilled vegetables, grilled

pineapple and steamed rice, this huge portion of fish and ample sides are sure to satisfy your hunger. Seeing as how sushi is their specialty, we couldn’t leave without trying a couple rolls. Hanh suggested we try their Volcano Roll, made with tuna, cream cheese and cucumber, topped with avocado, baked seafood dynamite, eel sauce and spicy mayo, and their Rock N’ Rolla – spicy tuna, krab delight and cucumber topped with tempura whitefish, scallions and eel sauce. Presentation alone, I was

impressed. I could not believe how much fish came in every roll. They definitely don’t skimp on portions. The taste was just as impressive – these rolls were absolutely amazing; the Volcano Roll, with its smoky sweet flavor, and the Rock N’ Rolla with its spicy sweet zing. I highly recommend you try these on your next visit!
