Bob Sierra Family YMCA Celebrates 30 Years in Carrollwood with $2.2MM Renovation by Mike Bird For more than 171 years the YMCA has been working to better the community through JudeoChristian principles by putting into practice programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. This tradition is alive and well and continues today right here in Carrollwood! The Bob Sierra Family YMCA is massive, with two campuses spanning 25 acres –the main campus is located at 4029 Northdale Boulevard, and about 1/10 of a mile

away on Ragg Road, is the sprawling Youth and Family Center (YFC). Due to its many great programs for all age groups, the Y has a diverse membership, appealing to people from all walks of life. There are other gyms, but none are as practical and functional for so many different lifestyles – from families who want to stay healthy together, seniors who love to stay active, and those who want a gym where the focus is on working out and not looking in mirrors. See “The YMCA” on page 24.

Travis Meyers Fulfills His Passion with Gulf Coast Divers By Deborah Bostock-Kelley His passion was fueled at an early age. As a boy, Travis Meyers was fascinated by water and marine life. Raised in central Illinois, however, he didn’t have any oceans to pursue his interest. “I fell in love with marine life going to aquariums as a kid,” he said. In 2006, after his sophomore year

Gables and Gardens LLC Incorporates Nature into Design By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Turn down Mushinski Road off Henderson and you would never know that Tiverton, a community of 30 brand-new custom designed homes, would soon be nestled into a cul-desac just a short drive down the street. And that is exactly how Gables and Gardens LLC founder, developer and builder Brent Balch intended it to be. He won’t destroy the natural beauty on the 9 acres; rather he is building into it. Brent graduated from University of Florida with a degree in Landscape Architecture and although he loved the exterior design component, he wanted to build the homes he was landscape designing. After a few years, he returned to University of Florida for a degree in Construction Management. Initially he worked in large commercial construction, but longed for an opportunity to build his own homes. In 2003, he started his developer/builder career in the Carrollwood area and continues to develop there today. For the past thirteen years he has filled a niche market for a small turnkey full-service operation.

8

MAY 2016

His first build was a townhome development on Linebaugh Avenue – On the Park Townhomes. Brent has the rare ability of being able to design a gorgeous home, while knowing how to perfectly complement its exterior with luscious landscapes. He has an eye for making the exterior landscape of a home as beautiful as his wife Angie, the business project coordinator, designs the interior. “She completes my vision,” he said. While he brings the outside in with tall French Doors and natural light, she uses a palette of light colors and Florida design elements to make each room a beautiful living space. “Watching dirt become a house is pretty awesome,” said Kim Rice, business sales manager, who works with home buyers to oversee the projects through to completion. Since opening, Gables and Gardens has remained a local family and friends business, with 10 employees, yet Brent still competes against the big builders. Unlike the production “just add water” homes that appear to simply pop up, he would rather take his time and create a family legacy; a home that will last through the gener-

ations due to the exemplary craftsmanship and dedication to detail. Brent said, “We build a little bit different than the big production guys. We are able to do what we want because we are small. We are able to tailor each project. We don’t do the same thing every time. We have total control because we do everything. We buy the land, we design and we build. It’s a turnkey operation. We only do 1 to 2 projects at a time. Staying small like this helps to keep our quality and allows us to offer a totally different product, at the same time.” Looking at the charming southern influenced design of the Tiverton community, reminiscent of Charleston, SC carriage homes, with expansive balconies and large covered porches, you can almost envision the future of the

beautiful energy-efficient SIPS construction (Structural Insulated Panel System) home - kids giggling, running to the community park at the end of street, reading a book on the wooden porch swing and hearing the ice tinkling in a glass of cold lemonade.

Owners Brent and Angie Balch “We are able to take time to develop our vision and come up with housing designs that are going to work and fit the neighborhood and community,” said Brent. Gables and Gardens does not create cookie-cutter production homes. They build a single family home that Brent has sketched out on paper months or years ago, finding the perfect plot of land, and bringing his vision of affordable family homes, priced in the 200-300K range, to life. Brent leaves a distinct Gables and Gardens stamp on each home he cre-

ates. Each home in the new Tiverton community will be a shade of white with a colorful door. “You’re not going to find this house, this style of house, or this construction anywhere else in Tampa,” said Brent. “We’re building unique neighborhoods.” “The quality of standards is what sets us apart,” added Rice. “It’s the standards that are used that just makes these homes standout – interior-wise and exterior. It’s architecture that is not around. These are not cookie-cutter templates. These are created and

branded by Brent and the company.” There are no car garages in the front of the house, rather rear recessed detached garages come with option Granny flats on conservation lots. Brent explained that he created this special subdivision because there are very few new homes in his price range in Carrollwood. “There is no land left,” he said. “To get out there and try to buy a house in the 200 to 300K that is brand new and that is in the Carrollwood area is hard to find. Everything is older - 20 – 25 years old -

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

and although there are plenty of opportunities to buy nice older homes, there really is not much new, if you want to stay in Carrollwood. We try to give an affordable alternative to fill the void.” What is distinctly recognized as signature Gables and Gardens homes, is the fabulous outdoor designs. Brent makes sure to build a gorgeous outdoor space with every design project. “There’s open space in every one of our communities for an outdoor living space. Each one of our Gauge Line Lofts has a private rooftop deck.” With projects that vary and are as diverse as the communities Brent creates - from custom townhomes and welcoming subdivisions, to custom industrial-styled lofts - one thing is in common: “We take pride in being unique. We do the whole thing to create thoughtful neighborhoods and homes.” A Grand Opening celebration of Tiverton will be held on May 14 from 10am-6pm and May 15 from 12-6pm. During the special event, Gables and Garden is offering $10K off design options. Learn more about the new community at www.homesoftiverton.com, by calling (813) 600-8858 or emailing sales@HomesofTiverton.com.

Basketball Court Provides Home to ASAP Church By Deborah Bostock-Kelley “Everyone is welcome,” is the most important message Pastors Mike and Lena Meadowcroft want to share. ASAP Church, named in honor of the ministries All Saints and Abiding Place, has only been around a few short months, but already the impact of this multi-denominational church has touched the community. “You need a miracle; you need healing in your body; you need prayer. You always need those things ASAP,” said Pastor Lena as she explained the secondary meaning of the church’s name. ASAP Church’s main goal is to connect parishioners of all ages to Jesus and build a solid understanding of a relationship with God. Mike said, “We are a multi-denominational church. We have people from every type of background of Christianity in our church. From Baptist to Orthodox to Pentecostal to Catholic, we have everyone. That’s very rare because everyone has walls up when it comes to their different denominational beliefs. We stay focused on Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father.

12

MAY 2016

As long as we stay focused on the main ideas, everyone coalesces around those ideas.” Each Sunday morning the couple and their "Dream Team" transforms the basketball court of Bob Sierra Family YMCA Youth and Family Center, located at 4015 Ragg Road, into ASAP Church in time for their 10 a.m. worship experience. “We set up every service and break down after every service,” he said. Pastor Mike started preaching in 1999 and served as a local pastor for 5 years. He spent many years as a missionary including spending two years in Africa. He said "We've had great experiences all over the world and I really felt in my heart that God was speaking to us about starting a local multi-denomination church. This is a big leap of faith. I’m used to a completely different type of ministry – big evangelist work in foreign fields – but now I feel like the Lord wants us to help people on an individual one-onone basis and family by family.” The pastors say that what separates them from other churches is their acceptance of people. “We understand what family dynamics today

look like,” explained Pastor Lena. “We have families that are divorced, are going through different situations – maybe they only have their kids every other week, or they’re raising their kids on their own. A lot of families nowadays, when something like that happens to them, they stop going to church. They seem to feel like nobody in that building is going to understand or has been through their situation. A lot of blended families feel that rejection from church; that church is for perfect people – husband, wife, 2.5 kids with a dog and many feel like they don’t belong there. We wanted to break down that stigma; we wanted to stand out that we are a church that personally understands various different family dynamics and support blended families and those dealing with child custody.” Pastor Mike stressed there is nothing to feel ashamed about. “We understand life happens,” added Pastor Lena. Pastor Mike says that he is a cut and dry Bible preacher. “It is the B-IB-L-E and there’s no changing that.” In addition to Sunday sermons, ASAP Church features Connect

Pastors Mike and Lena Meadowcroft with their son Michael Groups. “Connect Groups are the heart and soul of our church,” he said. “Connect Groups are where people can have real relationships with each other. A lot of good happens on Sunday morning – the

Carrollwood Neighborhood Lifestyle

preaching of the Word, communion, and worship – but there’s six other days in the week where people face real-life situations, so our small groups are where people can get together throughout the week.” Connect Groups include a bowling group and men’s golf, among others. “These are all ministries of our church where people come and feel comfortable with other people who enjoy hobbies that they do. What we find is a lot of our members are able to open up more with situations that they are going through in their lives when it’s in a Connect Group rather than on a Sunday morning church sit-

uation,” said Pastor Mike. ASAP Church also welcomes young parishioners through its ASAP Kids program for children, which is for infants through children 12 years old. They take real-life principles and put them together with similar experiences in the Bible, making it very simple for children to understand so they can apply it to their lives. “ASAP KIDS is basically church for kids. We use videos and we talk about different things in their lives. April was about Perseverance and May is about Contentment. In April, we looked at people in the bible and how they went through challenges

Carrollwood Neighborhood Lifestyle

and didn’t give up. For May we will talk about being content with what you have and being grateful. We will look at people in the Bible who had to learn that lesson, as well,” said Pastor Lena. Mike said, “We want to make ASAP Kids really fun, so when we they wake up in the morning, they are the ones dragging their parents to church, excited to go to church. We want to instill this early in life. We want to be that stability for kids – I know I’m going to have fun, see my friends and I’m going to learn something that I am going to remember for the rest of my life.” In addition to these programs,

ASAP Church members will regularly give back to the community through volunteering in their Serve Saturday program. Their recent efforts included a free car wash and limited detail – an all ages affair- on North Dale Mabry. Mike said, “People wanted to donate, but we didn’t take anything. We did this to bless the community to make their week a little easier.” To learn more about ASAP Church or give financially towards ASAP Kids program, visit www.asapchurch.com or like them on Facebook. Children’s Board Grant Funds New Programs For Sixth & Seventh Graders at Centre For Girls It’s full S.T.E.A.M. ahead for sixth and seventh graders at The Centre for Girls at 105 W. Sligh Ave., thanks to a two-year grant award totaling $309,000 from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Kelley Parris, Executive Director of The Children’s Board said: “For more than a year, the Children's Board has been collecting community feedback, data, and anecdotal information to develop strategies to make investments that lead to positive outcomes for children in Hillsborough County. Our findings yielded considerable concerns especially as it related to lack of available out of school time activities. In fact, in 2014, only 8.92% of Hillsborough County children were enrolled in after school programs. The Children’s Board is pleased to provide funding for this program and increase availability of positive out of school time activities.” Ann W. Madsen, Executive Director of the Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women, which operates The Centre for Girls said: “The grant makes it possible to broaden our arts and en-

richment programs for sixth and seventh graders to provide fun-infused programming especially designed for them. Through an innovative method of arts-integrated tutoring, we will use the arts to help girls improve reading and writing skills.” Centre for Girls Director Gabrielle Perham explained: “Our program is based on an evidencebased model which incorporates visual arts, drama, dance and music. Babysitting classes and water/home/fire safety classes will also be offered. “Our goal is to provide programs that teach skills to help girls develop a healthy understanding of themselves, others and the larger world. Providing a safe, vibrant learning space – especially for middle school girls – gives parents peace of mind. Parents will find us to be partners committed to their children’s healthy development both in and out of school.” The middle schoolers will be able to participate in Girls Glow, a 10-week series promoting healthy body image and self esteem. “The YMCA” Continued from page 1 The YMCA cares about community and it cares about its members, always striving to offer the very best services and amenities. Jill Price, Associate Member Director at the Bob Sierra Family YMCA in Carrollwood, shared great news! The Bob Sierra Y plans to celebrate its 30th year and give back to its members and the community by embarking on a massive renovation with a budget of $2.2 million. The project will take place in five phases over the next nine months. Renovations are scheduled to start mid-to-late-April with stages targeted for completion at late 2016 and early 2017. Updates are planned for virtually every area of the main campus. The 5000-square-ft. space that formerly was the gymnastics center will house the new mind/ body studio. Both locker rooms will be gutted and renovated, and private family locker rooms will be added with showers. A brand new Kid Zone space will be added which includes a new indoor family playground. Also, there will be an updated coffee

bar and lounge area. The Bob Sierra Family YMCA is excited to reward members with these new improvements and new facility additions with state-of-theart everything, which will serve both family memberships and individual memberships in a bigger and better way. Despite the large scope, the various phases of construction will allow the Bob Sierra Y to remain open and fully operational throughout the renovation.

Explore the Bob Sierra Y and YFC! There are so many things to love about the local Bob Sierra Y! Well maintained for 30 years, “The Bob,” as members sometimes call the main campus, has been a hub for the community, offering a basketball gym, pool, racquetball courts, dance/zumba/jazzercise workout spaces, and a fully equipped gym with all the latest equipment including a cross fit room. The Bob Sierra Family YMCA even offers free childcare to members.

The pool at the Bob Sierra Y is a great way to cool off and stay in shape. Enjoy water aerobics, FREE kids’ swim lessons, as well as programs for seniors and those with special needs. The swim team meets at the pools of both locations, the main campus and the YFC. The newer Youth and Family Center (YFC) on Ragg Road is devoted to youth and family sports programs, and you’ll find that the facility and the staff are amazing. The staff is always helpful, from the

front desk staff, to lifeguards, gym trainers and camp counselors. The YFC is very family-friendly and provides nice private family locker rooms and larger locker rooms with showers. The YFC has a new gymnastics building, completed a year ago. The 12,000-sq.-ft. Gymnastics Center boasts state-of-the-artequipment and highly skilled and trained instructors. It is home to Top Flight Gymnastics, a competi-

tive team that competes in USAG and AAU competitions! The YFC has a very large basketball gym, recreation rooms for practice, two big pools including three 25-foot water slides and a splash fountain shallow pool for very young children, a climbing tower, sand volleyball courts and lawn areas for practice and camps. The YMCA offers great team sports programs for kids ages 3–14. These programs include t-ball, swim

team, basketball, soccer, volleyball and flag football. This writer’s children have been involved in the team sports at the YMCA for the past five years and they love it. Team sports build confidence, coordination and show kids the value of teamwork. The after school childcare program is excellent and they even offer a scholarship program for lower income families. They work with the kids to make sure their homework is done before mom and dad pick them up. How nice is that? The YFC offers various summer camps, each with a different subject of study. For example, there is an aquatics camp, a gymnastics camp, sports camp and they even have a survival camp. The Y camps are some of the biggest and best camps in the area. The summer of 2016 will be “THE BEST SUMMER EVER” for kids who camp at the Bob Sierra Y!

Building a Strong Community Leigh Ann Landreth, Senior Executive Director, says, “Nationally the YMCA’s cause is strengthening the community and the Bob Sierra Family YMCA is a real reflection of that, serving and carrying out that mission of strengthening the communities of Northdale, Carrollwood and North Tampa for 30 years. This is what makes the Y different. The core foundation of the YMCA is to stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The YMCA is 501(C) 3 nonprofit charity organization and every dollar made goes back to investing in the community and this shows not only in our programming, but in

the quality of our facility. This is what distinguishes the YMCA from anywhere else. “GC Divers” Continued from page 1 outs of retail management. When the shop became available for purchase, Meyers jumped on the opportunity to bring his vision to life. On September 2014, Meyers opened the dive shop that he’d worked in for many years and rechristened it Gulf Coast Divers, going from manager to owner. From an educational component to retail shop, as well as service and repair of equipment, Gulf Coast Divers provides everything a diver would need… except for the water, that is. “We teach scuba lessons, from beginning classes all the way up to advance classes,” says Travis. “We also sell diving equipment and are a Scubapro Platinum dealer, the highest dealership level available. We also do service and repair, from filling up your air tank to servicing and repairing scuba equipment.” Not only does Gulf Coast Divers teach classes and sell equipment, they offer dive traveling, as well. “We specialize in dive travel all over Florida, and all over the Caribbean,” he said. “Anywhere there is water, we’ll go dive it. We don’t want to just teach

Gulf Coast Divers is located at 10414 N Dale Mabry Hwy in Carrollwood. They are open Mon. – Sat 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. you to dive, we want to take you on trips. That’s why we do this, so we can go diving. We’ve got one coming up to the Florida Keys and another to Roatán, Honduras. The reason you are learning to dive is not just to have fun in the classroom, but to get a chance to experience a lot of these places and we can help you with that.” When you learn to scuba dive, there are six training sessions in a beginner’s diving class. Two of the ses-

sions are in the classroom, two are in a swimming pool, and two in the open water. Students can be as young as 10 years old. “You transition from the class to the pool to the open water,” said Travis. “The open water places that we dive are in the fresh water springs like Weeki Wachee and Rainbow River Springs where the water is clear; it’s pretty, and there’s lots of things to see. It’s also a controlled environment; we

don’t have to worry about the weather not allowing us to dive because the springs are consistent. The water temperature is the same all year round and we know if we go there, we usually don’t have to worry about being cancelled due to weather.” Typically, pending time of year, there are 10 people in a scuba class and the six sessions span a two- week period. “At the end of that session, you are a certified diver for life,” said Travis.

Gulf Coast Divers also offers kids camps during the summer. Travis said, “When school is out, we have junior camps for ages 12 to 18. We contract out to use the junior Olympic size swimming pool at Cheval Golf and Athletic Club. They have a beautiful facility there. They are top notch and we are fortunate enough to be able use their facility for our scuba lessons.” The dedicated employees at Gulf Coast Divers have over 50 years of experience in the scuba industry. Whether you are new to the sport or

are an experienced diver, their goal is to exceed your expectations. “Diving is hobby that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy. We pride ourselves on being a professional dive shop that carries everything you need for scuba diving,” said Travis. Something that sets Gulf Coast Divers apart from other dive shops is their membership program. The platinum membership includes unlimited use of all rental equipment. The Gold membership includes unlimited use of scuba tanks. Both memberships are

available for a low monthly fee, with an annual commitment. It was created to help offset costs associated with scuba diving. Yet what Meyers enjoys most about diving isn’t even found in the water. “I enjoy meeting all the people,” he said. “You meet a lot of neat and interesting people. In fact, I met my wife Julie in my scuba diving class in 2008. That’s probably right on the top there. We have three kids under four– a little young now - but hopefully one day we can get them involved because I think they would really like that.”
