Plan Ahead to Enroll Elementary Aged Children in East Lake Middle School For a number of years, parents in the East Lake area have wanted a middle school that was closer to home. The Florida Department of Education determined that there wasn’t a need for a new zoned middle school, but the county was able build a school that benefits those who live closest to it, and it was named the top-ranked middle school in Pinellas County for the 20142015 school year. East Lake Middle School Academy of Engineering (ELMS AOE) opened in 2014 and is a District Application Program. The school does not have a geographic zone; all students must apply for a seat. However, a large percentage of seats are reserved for incoming 6th graders who live closest to the school. The school’s curriculum is based on the “Project Lead the Way, Gate-
way to Technology” middle school curriculum. Lessons are projectbased and are designed to engage the natural curiosity of middle school students. The school has a strong emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Incoming 6th graders for the 2016-2017 school year were recently admitted as follows: • 18 students – Admitted via “Sibling Preference” or “Professional Courtesy” • 57 students – Admitted via “Proximity” • 57 students – Admitted via a county-wide lottery An additional 170 students were placed on the school’s waiting list.
Admission via Proximity – There is No 2-Mile Radius Excluding priority preferences
(Sibling Preference and Professional Courtesy), 50% of all seats for incoming 6th graders are reserved for those who live closest to the school. This is the highest percentage of proximity seats for any program in the Pinellas County School District. All other middle school programs allocate 20% of the seats for proximity. A student’s distance from the school is calculated using the Manhattan Method. The eligible student who lives closest to the school is admitted first, then the student who lives second closest, and so on, until all proximity seats have been filled. To be eligible for proximity, the following apply: • You must be a 5th grader and reside in your home by the appropriate date, approximately December of your 5th grade year. • You must apply for admission
to ELMS AOE during the “initial application period.” • You must rank ELMS AOE as your #1 choice. Priorities only apply to your #1 ranked school. • You must maintain acceptable discipline and attendance records, grade point average, and standardized achievement test scores. • You must accept your invitation to the school during the “acceptance period.” The number of seats that are available for proximity will vary from year to year, based on the number of students who are admitted via Sibling Preference and Professional Courtesy. All applicants are considered equally based on their distance from the school, regardless of which side of East Lake Road they live.
