South Tampa Family YMCA Celebrates 30 Years in South Tampa with $4.36MM Renovation

By Mike Bird For more than 171 years the YMCA has been working to better the community through Judeo-Christian principles by putting into practice programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. This tradition is alive and well and continues today right here in South Tampa! The South Tampa Family YMCA is a convenient campus close to everything–located at 4411 S Himes Ave. Due to its many great programs for all age groups, the Y has a diverse membership, appealing to people from all walks of life. There are other gyms, but none are as practical and functional for so many different lifestyles – from families who want to stay healthy together, seniors who love to stay active, and those who want a gym where the focus is on working out and not looking in mirrors. The YMCA cares about community and it cares about its members, always striving to offer the very best services and amenities. Val Siktar Senior Group Vice President at the South Tampa Family YMCA shared great news! The South Tampa Y celebrates its 34th year and gives back to its members and the community by nearing completion on a massive renovation with a budget of $4.6 million. Opened on September 11, 2015 the new updated pool area includes: An Olympic size temperature controlled lap pool with 8 lanes. Men’s and women’s locker rooms and 3 changing rooms. A kid’s area with a

pirate ship playground, a great 2 story slide water slide, a zero depth entry area (which is great for toddlers and parents) and 3 spray fountains. The renovations to the pool are completed and ready to use. Updates are planned for virtually every area of the main campus. Some of the inside renovations that are still underway include a new larger welcome center with new furniture, new flooring, new areas for a spin room, group X and an updated wellness center. Additional renovations include a new max results room, trx small group training, located right off of the wellness center. Kids will get a new youth zone for 7 and older. The inside basket ball courts feature a newly refinished floor, and they look spectacular. The South Tampa Family YMCA is excited to reward members with these new improvements and new facility additions with state-of-the-art everything, which will serve both family memberships and individual memberships in a bigger and better way. Despite the large scope, the various phases of construction will allow the South Tampa Y to remain open and fully operational throughout the renovation. Explore the South Tampa Y ! There are so many things to love about the local South Tampa Y! Well maintained for 34 years, it has been a hub for the community, offering a basketball gym, pool, racquetball courts, various crossfit style workout spaces, and a fully equipped gym with all the latest equipment. The South Tampa

Family YMCA even offers free childcare to members. The pool at the South Tampa Y is a great way to cool off and stay in shape. Enjoy water aerobics, FREE kids’ swim lessons, as well as programs for seniors and those with special needs. The staff is always helpful, from the front desk staff, to lifeguards, gym trainers and camp counselors. The YFC is very family-friendly and provides nice private family locker rooms and larger locker rooms with showers. The YMCA offers great team sports programs for kids ages 3–14. These programs include t-ball, swim team, basketball, soccer, volleyball and flag football. Double check This writer’s children have been involved in the team sports at the YMCA for the past five years and they

love it. Team sports build confidence, coordination and show kids the value of teamwork. The after school childcare program is excellent and they even offer a scholarship program for lower income families. They work with the kids to make sure their homework is done before mom and dad pick them up. How nice is that? The South Tampa YMCA offers various summer camps, each with a different subject of study. For example, there is an aquatics camp, a gymnastics camp, sports camp and they even have a survival camp. The Y camps are some of the biggest and best camps in the area. The summer of 2016 will be “THE BEST SUMMER EVER” for kids who camp at the South Tampa Y! Summer camp starts June 13

Building a Strong Community Leigh Ann Landreth, Senior Executive Director, says, “Nationally the YMCA’s cause is strengthening the community and the South Tampa Family YMCA is a real reflection of that, serving and carrying out that mission of strengthening the communities of South Tampa for 34 years. This is what makes the Y different. The core foundation of the YMCA is to stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The YMCA is 501(C) 3 non-profit charity organization and every dollar made goes back to investing in the

community and this shows not only in our programming, but in the quality of our facility. This is what distinguishes the YMCA from anywhere else. When you are part of the Y you are part of a family with a deep tradition and heritage in caring for its members and community.” The YMCA sponsors many community outreach programs. The “LIVESTRONG at the YMCA” program offers a safe, supportive environment for those affected by cancer, and enables them to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

According to Clark, since the beginning, the innovative designs and space efficiency generated by the More Space Place’s products has made the business exciting and never boring. “When I joined More Space Place, we offered a single line of Murphy Beds along with a limited choice of complimenting bookcases. able process for our clients, so we believe if they can see various designs and get to feel and touch the furniture, it makes the purchasing decision easier. The experience is further enhanced with a 3 Dimensional software program that allows our clients to see what the furniture would look like in their home. We have found with this visual aid it is much easier for the client and the designer to work together to create the perfect design that is specifically created to meet the needs and desires of the client.” Satisfied customer Rita says, “I have lived in Palm Harbor for 20 years, dealing with many service companies; but, I have to say that the More Space Place is by far the most professional, caring, experienced company I have ever met. I cannot say how overwhelmed I am by their customized work but, more importantly, by the care and dedication that they gave me. They called prior to the date of the installation asking if the date was still acceptable, then called me the next morning to give me the anticipated arrival time and all the while checking with my availability. Customer service was of prime importance to everyone I have dealt with – something so rare in this day. I love my closets and when I’m ready to move again I know what company I will call first – More Space Place. All I can say is Thank You for a job extremely well done!” Making The Most of Your Space! ily that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t found them!” Along with the weight loss, Jen’s health and confidence have improved. She no longer has high blood pressure and she’s taken up jogging, having completed several 5K races! The Medical Difference There are three phases designed to help patients reach their goal weight and then maintain the weight loss for a lifetime. After a free, noobligation assessment, the MediWeightloss® journey starts with an Initial Consultation. This 90-minute appointment includes a one-on-one evaluation with a physician or nurse practitioner. Each individual’s detailed medical history is reviewed and any health conditions, prescriptions, or other concerns are discussed so the medical provider can identify factors that could affect weight loss and overall health. A blood panel and EKG are administered. The medical staff also measure weight and body fat percentage, determine BMI, and take other simple measurements. Then an individualized weight loss program is created. The plan includes a nutrition and exercise component, supplements, vitamin-based injections, and, if prescribed, an FDAapproved prescription. Patients are then seen on a weekly basis to review progress; any necessary adjustments to the plan are made. Patients also receive nutrition and exercise education, motivation, and support from the medical staff, as well as vitamin-based injections at the weekly visits. Patients are given access to a members-only website that allows them to track their

statistics, access recipes, create fitness plans, and review educational resources. Once their weight loss goals are achieved, patients enter the Wellness Phase of the program where they are taught how to keep the weight off for Before good. MediWeightloss® medical professionals are determined to help you reach your goals. Some Steps to Take: • Start a food journal. Recording foods regularly keeps you honest. Not only can journaling help you highlight areas needing a change, it also shows where you are successful. Making small changes weekly can really accelerate weight loss. In addition, food journaling can increase awareness of portion size, which is a very important component of healthy eating and weight loss. • Know what’s on your plate. Journaling, reducing calories, and decreasing portion size are all important, but the types of food matter too. In addition to proper servings of vegetables and fruit, eating a little more protein and less refined carbs can help you feel more satisfied. This may reduce your total caloric intake throughout the day.

After • Don’t skip meals. Part of staying in shape and living a healthy lifestyle is making sure you get the nutrients you need on a regular basis. Skipping meals, especially breakfast, may cause you to overindulge in food later in the day. • Stay hydrated. Don’t mistake thirst for hunger. Drink plenty of water throughout the day – the old standby is eight 8-ounce glasses and

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

that remains a good recommendation. Listen to your body and drink enough water so you never feel thirsty. Drink more water if it is hot outside or if you are exercising. • Set reasonable goals. When starting a weight loss plan, it can be discouraging to look at the overall amount of weight you want to lose. If you set the bar too high or only focus

on your overall goal, you may start to lack the motivation you need to keep going. Instead, try focusing on smaller, shortterm goals. Once you start accomplishing these, your overall goal will be in close reach. • Incorporate exercise. Research shows that incorporating daily physical activity is vital for your health and weight maintenance. The National Weight Control Registry tracked the success of more than 5,000 individuals who have lost significant amounts of weight and kept if off for long periods of time. Of the participants followed, they found that 89 percent reported using both diet and physical activity for weight loss, compared to just 10 percent that reported using diet alone.

Maintaining weight loss can be challenging, but it is possible if you are determined to make permanent lifestyle changes. The very same tools that lead to successful weight loss provide the framework for keeping the weight off. It is never a good idea to return to your old habits. If you overindulge or skip a few workouts, just get back on track! It’s all about living a healthy, balanced lifestyle. In addition to clinically proven weight loss programs, Medi-Weightloss® offers specialized weight loss programs for adolescents and diabetics, as well as free Worksite Wellness

Workshops for companies in the area. Medi-Weightloss® Tampa is offering a FREE assessment for the first 100 patients! Let the experts at MediWeightloss® help you reach your goal weight – and teach you how to keep it off for life!* For more information or to make an appointment at the Tampa location, call (813) 281-0500 or visit the company’s website, www.mediweightloss.com. *On average, patients compliant with the Medi-Weightloss® Program lose 6.4 pounds the first week and 14 pounds the first month.
