By Dara Tucker Jessica Beebe, owner and baker at Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes, opened the original store in Trinity, off Old County Road 54 in February of 2010. As a mom who lives locally in the Trinity area, she initially wanted to open an affordable neighborhood ice cream shop that caters to the budget of the average family. With a goal to provide a tutoring environment for students that focuses on filling in learning gaps and building a strong foundation to grow from, KnowledgePoints provides tutoring services that help children find confidence in themselves and in their abilities as students.

KnowledgePoints caters to public, private and home school students who are in need of tutoring after school, on weekends and over the summer. Rocky and Monica Contreras opened their first KnowledgePoints tutoring center in Land O’Lakes eight years ago and have recently opened a new tutoring center location in Trinity.

“My wife and I started this business because we saw a need within the community for tutoring and academic support,” says Rocky. “Monica’s entire career has been in teaching and my background is in business and training,

Jail and Bail Fundraiser Huge Success with $53,000 Raised Martín Gramática, former NFL Kicker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Morgan and Morgan Attorney Adam Brum were among the local celebrities serving time for a great cause at the 5th Annual Wheelchairs 4 Kids Jail and Bail fundraiser held April 29th at Charley’s Steak House in Tampa. Some of Tampa Bay’s prominent citizens, charged with humorous offenses, were handcuffed and taken to “jail” where bail was set

by Jail and Bail Judges Julie and Steve Weintraub, the owners of Gold & Diamond Source in Clearwater. The Weintraub’s approached each case with a great sense of humor and kept the event lively and entertaining.

“Court-ordered” to pay for their crimes, faux felons contacted friends and family to raise bail. Participants did their jobs well, raising $53,000 to benefit Wheelchairs 4 Kids, a local 501(C) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing equipment for children with mobility challenges.

Wheelchairs 4 Kids’ Executive Director Madeline Robinson was touched that the fundraiser had record

success, stating, “I can’t believe we broke another record! I did not anticipate over $50,000. It just shows how hard our ‘felons’ worked and how committed they are to helping our kids. We are so lucky to have such a supportive community.”

In addition to providing walkers, wheelchairs and other mobility items to children in need, Wheelchairs 4 Kids also plans special field trips for them. Some favorite past trips have included visiting Winter the dolphin at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, going to WWE events, and experiencing the excitement of the races at the St Pete Grand Prix.

Several kids that Wheelchairs 4 Kids has helped were able to attend this year’s Jail and Bail event, including six-year-old Aiden, who was provided with a specialized bicycle that can help in his physical therapy.

WWE wrestler Titus O’Neil made a special appearance by celebrating his birthday with the kids during the Jail and Bail at Charley’s. Titus held Aiden up to help him blow out the candles on the cake while everyone sang

This year’s Annual Wheelchairs 4 Kids Jail and Bail Fundraiser broke its record for total funds raised and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Kicker Martín Gramática broke the individual record, raising more than $8,000 happy birthday to the superstar.

J.W. Mitchell High School Marching Mustang Band’s Season Highlights

The J.W. Mitchell High School Marching Mustang Band recently returned from a memorable six-day trip to Washington DC where they participated in the 2016 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade on April 16.

The parade, which traveled down Constitution Avenue, was filled with musical performers, floats and giant balloons. The Band also had the unique opportunity to be part of the morning feature for

Arts Education Authority Names Longleaf Elementary One Of Florida’s Best Public Schools For The Arts Arts Education lives strong in the heart of Longleaf Elementary School, whose exemplary arts programs made them one of the best public schools for the arts in the state.

The Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE) recently recognized 14 Florida public schools as Florida Arts Model Schools: Longleaf received the designation for outstanding programs in music and visual arts.

Longleaf Elementary was chosen for offering Mini Majors, which is an exploratory arts wheel. Every seven weeks, fourth grade students rotate through an introduction to an area of the fine or performance arts. These rotations include dance, photography, green screen, stop animation, and improv/comedy. Fifth graders choose their top three areas of interest from Mini Majors, and focus on two of them in-depth, called Majors. Each semester, the fifth grade students work in one of their areas of interest, applying their skills in a long-term project, which prepares them for their transi-

tion to middle school. Majors allow students to interact with different peers than their usual classmates, all of whom have the same interest as they do. In each Mini Major and Major, students work with fellow students for a common goal. Students learn to be leaders, to compromise and to work to meet deadlines.

Longleaf also produces a full-scale musical each year, which included last year’s Tampa Bay premier of The Lion King. In addition to musicals, Longleaf Liberty Singers and Freedom Review Show Choir are recognized throughout the state. This year, Freedom will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to represent the school and district at America Sings! Live at the Lincoln Memorial. Artwork from students is displayed in prominent places throughout Pasco County.
