You Deserve NEWsom EYES!

World-renowned surgeon T. Hunter Newsom, M.D.

By Alexis Selby Restoring health and wellness, one needle at a time, Acupuncture Physician Sam Cheever is helping her clients to take back control of their life, while guiding them on the path to optimal living! Helping to rid the body of toxins, acupuncture has been used for thousands of years as a method to detoxify the body and let go of the energy that no longer serves it. At the core of this ancient medicine is the philosophy that when the energy or blood flow within your body becomes blocked in one area, it can create health issues throughout your body. Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, overex-

ertion, seasonal changes, poor diet, accidents, or excessive activity are among the many things that can create a blockage within your body. Acupuncture can help unblock the obstruction within your body, which in turn can eliminate pain and restore balance and harmony, as well as aid in the body’s ability to heal itself. Sam says, “Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is more accessible then people think, but it is really something to consider, especially when you have been to western doctors and they have done all they can do. And that very well may be true - using their own tool kit - but I have a completely different tool kit!” At your initial visit, she will talk to See “Optimal Living” on page 18

Arguably one of the most significant of the five senses, vision is often something we take for granted, that is, until our eyes no longer work the way they used to. As we get older, naturally our body begins to age; the eyes are no exception. At first, impairment in vision might not seem so noticeable, but as time progresses slowly your vision deteriorates until one day you find yourself waking up and when you open your eyes it’s as if you are underwater;

everything is blurry and you can barely see your own reflection. Vision impairment greatly affects one’s quality of life and ability to enjoy the beauty around us – but it doesn’t have to! At Newsom Eye, they want you to know that you are not alone. Millions of others suffer from the same debilitating effects of vision impairment. But, there is hope! You can have NEWsom EYES! Done Rite Roofing, Inc. By Marcy Sanford Family owned and operated, Done Rite Roofing has been a leader in the roofing industry for more than 18 years. And, while homeowners throughout the area have been praising their hard work, dedication, and honesty for many years, they have recently received several awards from the global leader of roofing products, Owens Corning. In February Done Rite Roofing was nominated for a seat on the Owens Corning Platinum Contractor Advisory Board. “There are only 250 Owens Corning Platinum Roofing Contractors across the U.S., of which only 14 are nominated for a seat on the contractor advisory board,” said Done Rite Roofing owner Jason Loiacano. “It is an honor that only one-percent of companies achieve. We will get a chance to play an active role in the decisions and development of Owens Corning’s line of products and services. This is a benefit to our customers because we will be the first to know about and the first to be able to install new products in roofing and insulation. For instance, we recently began offering clients upgrades to their attic insulation, which can reduce energy costs up to 30%.” “Done Rite Roofing was great,” said customer Randy J. “Their customer service was outstanding. They communicated with us throughout the process and anytime I had a question or concern, someone called me immediately. They did a very good job on the roof itself and were there when they said they were going to be there. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing a new roof or roof repair.” Thanks to Done Rite Roofing’s dedication to excellence, they have also been selected for Owens Corning’s De-

8

MAY 2016

ployment Project to provide new roofs to service men and women in need. Owens Corning handpicked the very best roofing contractors in the industry to help with this worthwhile project and Jason says all of the employees at Done Rite Roofing are looking forward to helping military families. “Done Rite Roofing is more concerned about the customer then their pockets,” said homeowner Michael P. “They get the job done right with great customer service and you will be happy. They communicate with you during the project. It's a family run business by very sincere people who make a lot of donations to worthy causes.” Done Rite Roofing prides themselves on helping homeowners throughout the entire process, from beginning to end. “We have a showroom in Palm Harbor where clients can come look at samples,” says owner Christina Loiacano. “Or we will drop off samples. We help our clients with insurance claims. We are always available to answer any questions they have.” Done Rite Roofing never uses subcontractors, and many of their employees have been with them for more than 15 years. “We consider our employees and our clients to be part of our family,” says Jason. “We handle each and every roofing project personally to ensure the highest standard of quality. We stand behind all our projects with a lifetime material, labor and workmanship warranty.” Done Rite Roofing is experienced in nearly every style of roofing. Whether you want a shingle, flat, tile, or metal roof or want blown in attic insulation, you can be assured that with Done Rite Roofing the project will be done reliably, promptly, and with as little mess or stress to your life as possible.

“Everyone who worked for Done Rite, from the people who tore off the old shingles to the folks who laid the new ones, worked hard and displayed a professional demeanor,” said Palm Harbor resident Deborah M. “They obviously take pride in their work. A couple who lives down the street stopped me and said that based on what they’ve seen while my roof was being laid, they plan to hire them when they need a new roof. After they finished each day’s work, they cleaned up their mess. I highly recommend them.” From start to finish, Done Rite Roofing wants to make sure that their clients are completely satisfied. Jason and Christina’s son actively checks every project to ensure all employees are following safety standards, and Owens Corning inspects the installation once it is complete; just two more ways that Done Rite Roofing makes sure everything is done right for their clients. In addition to installing new

roofs, Done Rite Roofing also installs roof vents and installs and repairs skylights. “We are one of only two installers in Tampa,” says Jason. If you need a roof inspection or FHA inspection, Done Rite is on the job! And, if you are concerned that your roof may be reaching the end of its life and want to make sure that your shelter will stand up to the weather, Done Rite offers free roof evaluations. Done Rite Roofing services Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. They offer 100% interest free financing as well as senior discounts. They are even there for you during emergencies, with 24-hour emergency repairs and a guaranteed rapid response. Done Rite Roofing is constantly updating promotions and specials on their website, Facebook and twitter account. Make sure you check them out so you’ll know about new and upcoming deals. Children’s Board Grant Funds New Programs For Sixth & Seventh Graders at Centre For Girls It’s full S.T.E.A.M. ahead for sixth and seventh graders at The Centre for Girls at 105 W. Sligh Ave., thanks to a two-year grant award totaling $309,000 from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Kelley Parris, Executive Director of The Children’s Board said: “For more than a year, the Children's Board has been collecting community feedback, data, and anecdotal information to develop strategies to make investments that lead to positive outcomes for children in Hillsborough County. Our findings yielded considerable concerns especially as it related to lack of available out of school time activities. In fact, in 2014, only 8.92% of Hillsborough County children were enrolled in after school programs. The Children’s Board is pleased to provide funding for this program and increase availability of positive out of school time activities.” Ann W. Madsen, Executive Director of the Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women, which operates The Centre for Girls said: “The grant makes it possible to broaden our arts and en-

richment programs for sixth and seventh graders to provide fun-infused programming especially designed for them. Through an innovative method of arts-integrated tutoring, we will use the arts to help girls improve reading and writing skills.” Centre for Girls Director Gabrielle Perham explained: “Our program is based on an evidencebased model which incorporates visual arts, drama, dance and music. Babysitting classes and water/home/fire safety classes will also be offered. “Our goal is to provide programs that teach skills to help girls develop a healthy understanding of themselves, others and the larger world. Providing a safe, vibrant learning space – especially for middle school girls – gives parents peace of mind. Parents will find us to be partners committed to their children’s healthy development both in and out of school.” The middle schoolers will be able to participate in Girls Glow, a 10-week series promoting healthy body image and self esteem. It is designed to approach middle school girls on their

own turf on topics such as self image, fashion, peer and societal pressures – and equip them with critical thinking and self-empowerment skills. Perham said: “Our girls have helped to shape the series, and we have commitments to “export” Girls GLOW to other child-centered organizations, eager to host the series for their girls.” A newly launched state-of-the-art Cyber Lab will help girls improve their digital skills through digital classes, robotics and regular arts-based after school activities. The Centre for Girls is a program of The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women and has built in new resources for parents as well. Counseling and Wellness and Employment Services programs will offer services to parents and families onsite during times when the facility is not being used by girls. Clinical counseling services in English or Spanish will be available for adults, couples, children and teens, and families. The Centre has licensed, Master’s-level counselors

Sarah Schacht, DVM and Pablo Schacht, DVM met and fell in love as students at The Ohio State University College of Veterinarian Medicine. Fast forward, the Doctors’ busy family includes their 14-year-old daughter and their sons, 12-year-old fraternal twins, plus a menagerie of pets including three rescued Chihuahuas, a handraised orphaned tortoiseshell cat, a gecko, two Mexican king snakes, and two aquariums because Dr. Pablo had to make a safe place for the tiny justhatched African cichlids. In other words, this couple really understands the dynamics of busy families and pet

Dr. Sarah, Gabby, Cheyenne and Dr. Pablo of Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center lovers alike. They strive to make quality, full service veterinary care as convenient and affordable as possible for local pet owners. Dr. Sarah and Dr. Pablo are true animal lovers, but they really love people too, and that is why they are so excited to make life even easier for the owners and their furry loved ones!

Veterinary Care at Your Doorstep! Dr. Sarah is excited that Dr. Pablo has joined the practice full time, thus allowing Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center to expand services. Dr. Pablo is happy to work with Dr. Sarah full time; plus, he likes the way she does things, and stated, “I love her

philosophy – when people come here, it’s almost like they are family.” He added, “Another thing I love is how it’s always calm.” For the past twenty years, Dr. Pablo has practiced in Tampa, though he has been working one day a week with Dr. Sarah, who opened Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center in 2010. Until recently, Dr. Pablo was only able to devote one day a week to provide veterinary care for exotic pets including reptiles, birds, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs and other pocket pets. Dr.

Pablo has a special interest in Veterinary Dentistry and provides advanced dental services including oral exams, cleaning and polishing, dental x-rays, advanced extractions, oral surgeries and more. In the past, as with the exotic pet appointments, dental services were only scheduled one day a week but now with Dr. Pablo on board full time, they are better able to meet the needs of the growing practice. Even better, they are bringing veterinary medical care right to your door. You read it correctly – Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is making house calls! If you live in the Tarpon Springs, East Lake, Clearwater or Westchase communities, you can now receive

house calls from Dr. Sarah, Dr. Pablo and their staff. This service will be invaluable to those who don’t drive or who have a pet that can’t travel well anymore or that isn’t that easy to transport. Have a big dog that acts like a little “scaredy cat” trying to climb in your lap as soon as you pull up to the vet’s office? Well it doesn’t have to be a problem anymore! Most pet health issues and well care visits can now be taken care of right in the comfort of your own home. Most times, we need our veterinarian to see our pets for the normal stuff: Vaccinations, wellness exams, parasite control, micro-chipping and minor health issues. But when there is a bigger medical problem to deal with, Dr. Sarah and Dr. Pablo are more than qualified to care for your pet. They keep up on the very latest developments and continuous trainings in their field, and Tarpon Woods

Veterinary Medical Center is fully equipped to provide medical care to your pet in critical cases where time is of the essence. The office offers state-of-the-art technology and in-house capabilities with x-ray and radiography equipment, a surgical room that includes critical care monitoring (including EKG, pulse oxymetry and blood pressure monitoring) and ICU equipment (IV fluids pump, circulating water blankets, Oxygen therapy). There is an isolation suite to protect patients in case they see any animals that might have contagious diseases. Surgical procedures include spaying, neutering, lacerations and abscess treatment, tumor removal, abdominal surgery, ear/eye surgery, reproductive surgery and more.

Your Pet is Loved Here! Assisting Dr. Sarah and Dr. Pablo are Veterinary Technicians Cheyenne Wingfield and Gabby Sanchez; both love interacting with the pets and their owners. Everyone that you’ll meet at Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is invested in making your pet feel as calm and comfortable as possible. “My dad was a human doctor, but I decided to work with animals,” shared Dr. Sarah. “It’s a challenging career,

and in a way it’s like being a Pediatrician – trying to help these little creatures who can’t speak to us.” She adds, “It’s so rewarding when you can help a little animal and you’re there to help them, the feeling you get is unbelievable.” You’ll find plenty of great testimonials online for both Dr. Sarah and Dr. Pablo, but I had a chance to meet James, who lives in Tarpon Woods and has been bringing his boxer to Dr. Sarah for the past six years since he first moved to the area. He admits that at first it was the convenience that prompted him to try Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center, but that isn’t what made him stay. “It was the location in the beginning that brought me in, but these people are fantastic! They are a husband-and-wife team and I really like the “mom and pop shop” feel. It allows for more personal closeness,” said James. His boxer Günter was in for blood work, and this was one happy and relaxed dog! It was clear that it wasn’t just the dog owner that loves this vet’s office. Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is located at 800 Tarpon Woods Blvd., Suite F 3, in Palm Harbor (across the street from Walgreens). Please call (727) 771-0400 or visit TarponWoodsVet.com for more information.

The treatment is specific, measurable and repeatable. Before I even begin the treatment I take time to understand what is going on with them, because I have to fix their spirit before I can even make a dent in whats bothering them physically.” A common question Sam is often asked is, ‘do the needles hurt?’. Sam says, “The needles are virtually painless, so if the reason you are not coming in is because you are afraid of needles, you have nothing to worry about. A silent, yet debilitating culprit, mineral and nutrient imbalances can cause so many different issues, including chronic auto-immune disorders, depression, muscle cramping, weight problems, arthritis, high blood pressure, cognitive impairment, and so much more; the list goes on and on. The hair analysis test can also test for elevated levels of toxic metals, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and aluminum. Making it really affordable to all of her clients, Sam offers this extensive test for only $77. “Newsom Eyes” Continued from page 1 by world-renowned surgeon T. Hunter Newsom, MD utilizes the most advanced medical laser technology in the world; even better, they have two offices (South Tampa and Carrollwood) located within a short drive from the Westchase/Citrus Park area! Following in the footsteps of his father, who is also an ophthalmologist, Dr. Newsom has had a passion for the field for as long as he can remember. “I have always had an interest in ophthalmology,” says Dr. Newsom. “I’ve always liked working with my hands. Even if I won the lottery and never had to work again I would still do what I do. I love what I do and the gratification from giving people their vision back is something I don’t want to live without. It’s really a unique, special thing!” Starting with a staff of five, within a year of opening his first location in Sebring, Florida in 2001, Dr. Newsom, had already began building his own surgery center as a way to implement the new technology in Cataract and LASIK surgery that he, himself,

20

MAY 2016

had helped to develop. Opening his own surgery center not only allowed him to help more people, it also gave him the platform to do more research, which in turn caused his practice to grow at a substantial rate; he recently passed a significant milestone – over 100,000 patients since opening his practice 14 years ago! Dr. Newsom says, “When I first opened my practice, it started off as a very intimate family business.
