Dr. Bich-Ngoc Pham – Providing Quality Family Medical Care By Marcy Sanford I have been a patient of BichNgoc Pham, MD, since she opened her office in 2010. Since that time I have recommended her to several friends who have gone to her and thanked me for my recommendation. I have also talked to many other friends who were already her patients and we all had the same things to say about Dr. Pham – she is a very approachable, personable doctor who likes to get to know her patients and really enjoys helping them to make informed decisions regarding their

health. She is easy to talk to and listens to what you have to say and does a wonderful job explaining medical information. Another thing that makes Dr. Pham so great is the convenient location of her office, which is located at 11011 Countryway Blvd, next to the Upper Tampa Regional Library. Dr. Pham graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine. She has been in practice for over 11 years and provides a very comprehensive approach to medical care for her patients. “I enjoy family practice because I like to get to

know my patients as a whole,” states Dr. Pham. “With many of them I even know their family. I have always loved medicine and enjoy helping people. It is very gratifying to me when I can educate my patients about health issues and what they can do to live a healthier, better life. In my practice, I want to make sure that I can spend plenty of time with each patient to determine what their health issues are and how we can resolve them.” Even during her residency, Dr. Pham excelled at educating others and received the Residency Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching to other residents while

Spice Fight – Boycotting Can Make A Difference! By Kim Thomas There is a real problem permeating small towns and big cities alike throughout the U.S. and that is the availability of synthetic drugs that are intentionally marketed as incense, but are actually a dangerous potpourri of potentially deadly chemicals. This is an epidemic that is threatening our Country. The American Association of Poison Control Centers reported that they received 6,959 calls related to synthetic cannabinoids in 2011, up from 2,906 in 2010. Spice and K2 are sold in little packets with bright packaging and catchy names; often hidden behind the counter of unscrupulous stores and sold by a code name. These readily available products have been sprayed with synthetic cannabinoids and are manufactured in Asia and then sold in local markets throughout the U.S. including gas stations, liquor stores, convenient stores, smoke shops, or on the internet under the names “K2,” “Spice,” “Chronic Spice,” “Spice Gold,” and “Spice Silver,” “Scooby Snax,” and many more names. Bath Salts is another synthetic drug that is readily available under names like “Purple Wave,” “Zoom,” and “Cloud Nine,” to name a few. These extremely dangerous drugs are a central nervous system stimulant that can cause episodes of extreme psychosis.

If you thought these products were outlawed, you are partially correct. Some have been banned but the manufacturers keep coming up with new chemical compounds, essentially staying one step ahead of the laws. Law enforcement officers and government officials alike are gravely concerned, and have stepped up efforts to stop the sale of these products. Recently the House and Senate agreed on legislation to control 26 synthetic drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. These drugs include those commonly found in products marketed as “K2” and “Spice.” Meanwhile, a group of parents in Pasco County have had enough and are protesting and calling for the boycotting of stores that choose to sell synthetic drugs. Since this issue extends into all of our communities, I want to share what is being accomplished by a small group of folks in New Port Richey. The Suojanen family has declared war on stores that carry Spice and products like it. They have started sending emails to those interested in joining the protest which detail which stores are selling synthetic drugs and where the protests will be held. They are asking that at least one responsible adult male be present at each protest location. Also, those who are participating in the protest are asked not to park in the store’s parking lot, not to block any entrances, and absolutely not to

Westchase Area Neighborhood News

confront or engage in confrontations with store owners, employees or customers. This group is trying to, peaceably and legally, make a difference by hurting these stores’ bottom lines. We are consumers. We stop at convenience stores and spend our hard-earned wages. Make sure you are spending your money at stores where the management has morals. Boycott these stores that are selling Spice, K2, Bath Salts and other designer drugs, and soon they will realize that whatever small profit they are making on this trash can’t make up for the profits lost from other sales. “They are working on this at a legislative level to get this outlawed,” says Erik Suojanen. “Please do not wait for others, government or otherwise, to solve this problem. It’s our problem. I don’t care if it’s legal – they know what it is they are selling. It’s morally corrupt and not only that – it is evil!” Perhaps if this idea – of boycotting and “outing” stores guilty of selling Spice, K2, Bath Salts, or any other upcoming new synthetic legal-by-a-loophole substances that are actually dangerous drugs – is kindled in small towns across the states, it will fire up and spread across the U.S. Then the power of the American consumer will overcome the greed of store owners who, many times, aren’t even from this country.

Brain Balance Achievement Centers – Where Every Kid Connects With Success By: Kristy Needham, proud mother of Zeke Back story: My son Zeke is ten years old and is one of the joys of my life. He is a hard worker with an amazingly good attitude. Zeke is compassionate, kind and sincerely wants to please by helping and doing the right thing. He is kind to everyone he meets and smiles all the time. At three, he started speech and occupational therapy, which was recommended by his pediatrician and his preschool, and he tested within the normal limits of both. At five, he started to read, so instead of another year of preschool, we wanted him to be challenged and had him attend Kindergarten – he excelled! At six, his first grade teacher (with 15 years of experience) suspected he was not producing work commensurate with the amount of effort he provided, stating, “He’s doing fine, but

6

AUGUST 2012

there is something there. He is so smart and he works so hard, but there is something there that we are missing and I can’t figure out what it is.” At seven, his second grade teacher, who has never met or communicated with his previous teacher, shared the same sentiment. She stated, “On a scale from 1-10 he is as smart as a 10 and works as hard as a 10, but he produces work at a five. I don’t know why, but he is working harder than he should have to and is not producing the work that he is capable of mentally.” I saw it. Homework was taking him a really long time and spelling words became brutal for him. He wasn’t distracted and he wasn’t lazy. Zeke was working hard, yet not getting a lot done. In all of his written work, letters

were backwards. I would point out to him a backwards letter and he would erase it and write it the exact same way. He understood the concepts and got the ideas, but he just couldn’t get through his homework. Even at home he was a hard worker, yet he would frequently forget instructions and have to check a chart several times a day for sequences in a daily routine. At eight, he was still struggling and was intimidated by kids his own age. His outgoing, jovial personality was changing and he became timid and withdrawn. His confidence plummeted. Homework that should’ve taken Zeke 15 minutes took him 1-1 ½ hours. His perception of himself, other kids and school changed and he started to have negative thoughts and talk

derogatively about himself. It was not going in a good direction and everything was happening so quickly. After a lot of paperwork, a lot of meetings and several observations from two different school counselors, one counselor recommended that we tape a note to the top of his desk that said, “Stay focused on your task until it is finished.” I wanted to scream – this addresses minor symptoms, not the problem or the root cause of the problem. All of his teachers now see there is “something there” but they don’t know what it is. After testing Zeke’s vision, he started wearing glasses to school and started vision therapy sessions for an hour, twice a week for 6 months. In addition, Zeke worked half an hour to an hour of homework for vision therapy each day – there was no real success. Next, he was diagnosed ADHD inattentive. Upon pediatrician recommendation, Zeke tried three different

work in hand. One paragraph of writing that took him an hour to write included backwards letters in every word and one word spelled four different ways. The information that was presented sounded interesting, but at this time there had been five different solutions Pictures of Zeke, before (L) and after (R) beginning in the form of diagnoses and therapy that therapy at Brain Balance Achievement Centers. had not produced any real results. Worse – we spent a lot of medications with no real success - just money, time and effort for each. Worse varying side effects. He was prostill – Zeke has been aware and inclaimed to have, “dyslexic tendencies” volved in each and his confidence and and “showing evidence of Audio Proself esteem are getting lower at each atcessing Disorder.” There was no plan tempt to help him. He is still struggling to help him; no action items. There and he knows it. After looking at was nothing we could do. (Yes, sometimes he holds his hands over his ears at school assembly and gets off the bus almost in tears because it is so loud.) Are multi-tasks hard for him? (Yes.)” He has my attention. He is completely accurate without ever meeting Zeke. Then he said the statement that changed my mind completely – “I know what this is, and I can help him.” In six years not one person was willing to say this. I started to cry. I talked it over with my husband (who was in Afghanistan on assignment) and we decided – we are going to do the program; but this is THE LAST thing we are going to do before we stop trying to fix whatever this is and accept it for what it is. If this is a struggle our son will have for the rest of his life, our challenge as parents will be to help him find his way successfully.

The Staff at Brain Balance Zeke was exposed to four people, three times a week that were, and still are, intensely focused and passionate about Zeke’s success. A constant source of encouragement, the staff cares not just about Zeke, but about our other children and our family. The staff at Brain Balance counseled and encouraged me during times of frustration and fear. Every day we were there for the appointments, someone would come out to the waiting room and talk with our family. On more than one occasion, the director pulled me into the office to talk privately about my concerns. I appreciate the time, effort and caring everyone on staff at Brain Balance showed to our family. It is obvious this is an office wanting to help kids and their families succeed – in more ways than academically. They celebrated each success with us and encouraged and challenged Zeke.

Our Results Zeke is no longer on the ADHD scale. He no longer has letter reversals in his writing and no longer shows any evidence of Dyslexia. Zeke no longer shows any evidence of Audio Processing Disorder – I didn’t know this was even a possible outcome. This program has changed Zeke’s life, the life of our family and the dynamic between Zeke and his brothers. I no longer worry or have anxiety over Zeke’s academic life. We started the program just before he started 3rd grade (again) in fall 2011. Zeke was a good reader, but preferred books lower than his level of reading – 2nd grade level books. He ended the year with a book report on his favorite book – an 8th grade level book. He started off the year really struggling with writing. His first writing earned a 1 from the school district writing assignment. One is considered first grade level. His final writing of the year was a 4 – fourth grade level. I talked with his teacher frequently to see how he was doing in the class socially and emotionally. What do other kids think of him? What does he think of himself? He is well liked in class and is considered one of the “smart kids.” He often finishes assignments first. His grades in math and science are consistently in the top of the class. His entire academic life and outlook have changed in one year. In the beginning of the year, Zeke was a scared, defeated boy; afraid he was stupid. I could see it even in his school pictures and how he related to other kids. Now, he is a happy, confident kid who loves school. He is so proud of his grades and the work he does. I love that he smiles all the time again. Brain Balance is located at 4022 Tampa Road, Suite 6 in Oldsmar. The Hungry Greek- It's Fresh, It's Healthy, It's Good! By Jeff Berlinicke If you are looking for authentic, great tasting Greek food, look no further than The Hungry Greek – where you will find a wide selection of delicious Greek dishes, made with only the freshest and most natural ingredients. With two locations in the Tampa Bay area, and three more on the way – including new locations in Atlanta, Clearwater, and Land O’Lakes, The Hungry Greek is proudly expanding throughout the Tampa Bay Area and beyond. The Hungry Greek West Tampa, located at 12950 Race Track Road, is in a great location, centered in the heart of Westchase. George Constantinou, co-owner of The Hungry Greek, who runs the restaurant alongside his father Dino, has big plans for their burgeoning restaurant chain. “We want 50 more restaurants in the next five years,’’ says George. “We just want to make sure we provide the best quality everywhere we go.’’ Outside of Tarpon Springs, it’s hard to find quality Greek food, so, to Dino, it seemed obvious to bring it to the Westchase area after success in Clearwater. He and his son started The Hungry Greek in Westchase in 2006,

18

and it has been a huge success. George, who was raised in the Tampa Bay area, was born into the family business. He started working for his father on a permanent basis at the age of 14 and never left. “We are the originals in this area,’’ says George. “We have quality food and it’s all made with our own homemade recipes. We saw Westchase growing and developing and there were no Greek places in the area, so we decided to start here. We offer home-style Greek food and you can’t get that anywhere else in the area.’’ “There was a need for something different, a Greek niche,’’ says George. “We haven’t even needed to do much advertising because word-of-mouth has been so good to us. I’d say about half of our customers are regulars and know us by name.’’ The key, explains Dino, is to simply give the customers what they want – good food, great service, and a friendly atmosphere. “Our goal is to satisfy everyone,’’ says Dino. “Our regulars know that everything is homemade and that they will always be satisfied and happy when they leave. There’s nothing like this outside of Tarpon Springs. The food is

fresh, healthy and good.’’ The gyros, says George, are one of the best sellers on the menu, but he also recommends trying the Chicken Souvlaki – two juicy chicken breast skewers served over rice, accompanied with a Greek salad and homemade potato salad. If you are in the mood for something else there is plenty more on their large menu, which boasts an extensive list of delicious choices. The portions, which are huge, are about as large as you can find at any other restaurant in the Tampa Bay Area. Fortunately The Hungry Greek keeps more than enough takeout boxes in store, because it’s hard to finish a whole meal. The Hungry Greek offers a variety of homemade Greek dishes, including gyros, souvlaki, avgolemono soup, mousaka, pastitsio, dolmades, Greek salads and much more. They also serve traditional American fare, such as hamburgers and cold-cut sandwiches. The Hungry Greek offers a casual dining experience with an open kitchen design that allows guests to watch their meal being prepared, as it roasts on the

spit and captures the aroma of the wood burning grill. If you are having trouble making up your mind on what to order, just take a second and look at the television screen, which showcases largescreen views of everything on the menu. Although The Hungry Greek offers quick service, with delicious food ready within minutes, Dino says that he doesn’t like being compared to fast food chain restaurants, as he offers options that are a lot healthier and unique than most of the regular choices you will find at such restaurants. The Hungry Greek also serves beer and wine, and offers great Greek beers including Marathon and Mythos. The Hungry Greek has a cozy in-

door area, in addition to offering outdoor patio seating. Dino and George, along with their friendly staff, provide a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere and take the time to make sure you are enjoying your meal. By the way – bring the kids – there is a great kids menu and they offer pizza and burgers with fries, in addition to kiddy souvlaki with rice, and a kiddy gyro platter with rice. For children looking for a familiar, yet still Greek option, they also serve a tasty grilled cheese pita with fries. In addition to their homemade recipes, The Hungry Greek also sells their own homemade, bottled salad dressings. The ingredients are secret, but if you find a dressing you like, you can buy bottles at the restaurant. “With our salad dressings, kids who don’t even tend to like salad, love our dressings,’’ says Dino. The Horiatiki Salad, one of the many delicious salads

to choose from, includes cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, olives, green peppers, beets and potato salad. The salad is served with a warm, soft pita that is seasoned with olive oil and is a great accompaniment to any entrée. Another great addition to your meal is the spinach pie, which is served with a Greek salad and the potato salad – which is unlike anything you can find anywhere in Tampa. The spinach pie might be a just a side order, but it’s enough to fill almost anyone. Add a side order of the Avgolemono soup (that’s lemon-rice chicken soup), and you have a full meal. If you have any room left after your meal I highly recommend you try one of their delicious desserts, such as their rice pudding and baklava, which are a traditional Greek finale to dinner and really completes the Greek experience. They also offers catering, so if you

“Dr. Pham” Continued from page 1 she was Chief Resident at Alton Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, LA. When I first visited Dr. Pham, I was very impressed from the moment I walked in the doors – not only did I not have to sit in the waiting room biding my time until I could be seen, but I was talking to Dr. Pham shortly after my arrival. In addition, all of the staff members working in her office – from the ladies who checked me in at the reception desk to the nurses who checked my blood pressure – were friendly, helpful and caring. During that initial visit, Dr. Pham took plenty of time to talk to me to about the medication I was taking, my general health and any issues I might be concerned about. Since my initial visit I have been back several times and have found that to be true for every visit I’ve had with her. Dr. Pham accepts patients 6 years of age and older. In addition to annual check-ups/physicals, well-women exams, treatment for illnesses and preventative medicine, she also offers inoffice EKGs and in-office blood and

lab work. Dr. Pham can also administer injections and immunizations and provides treatment of chronic diseases and those requiring urgent care. Another thing that has really surprised and impressed me about Dr. Pham, is that when I’ve had test results, Dr. Pham has always called me personally to discuss them and has personally returned my calls on the same day when I’ve had a question. She is an exceptional doctor who really cares about the well-being and health of all her patients! Continuing education is very important to Dr. Pham, and she makes sure to stay current about new medicines, advanced research and the latest treatments through medical journals and continuing education classes. This enables her to give her patients the most up-to-date information and advanced treatments available. My friends and I aren’t the only ones who think Dr. Pham is a great doctor. In 2011, she received a Patient’s Choice Award from Vitals.com – an online guide to help patients find doctors – and was ranked in the top 5% of rated physicians nationwide! Family plays an important role in Dr. Pham’s life, both in and out of the office. Dr. Pham and her husband

Dr. Pham alongside her loving husband and beautiful children. Toan, moved from New Orleans to the Tampa Bay Area several years ago to be closer to their family. They decided the Westchase area would be a good place to raise their children, Emma and Jacob, and would be a wonderful foundation to re-open her practice. Dr. Pham says, “We really like living in Westchase because it is a healthy community with lots of parks and walking trails. We love the schools and have enjoyed getting to know

other families in the area.” Dr. Pham’s office accepts most major insurances including, but not limited to Aetna, AvMed Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Coventry, Humana, United Healthcare, Secure Horizons and Medicare.
