Asian-Inspired New Beijing Restaurant Has Something for Everyone

By Pam Sica New Beijing is delightfully new! What makes it so appealing is the casual, open and airy feeling that is immediately conveyed as you enter the establishment. Angel Belcher, the very gracious, new sole owner of New Bei-

jing, has recently renovated the restaurant to create a unique setting that is as bright and fresh as it is low-key and unassuming. With both private booths and open tables available, it is easy to understand how this inviting and comfortable venue would be perfectly suited for accommodating everything from a large family feast to an intimate date night for two. The New Beijing Restaurant is also available for special occasions (rehearsal dinners, parties, etc.) either on premises or masterfully catered elsewhere. Easily accessible in the Van Dyke Commons shopping plaza, on the southeast corner of Dale

From the quality cut to the hot shaving cream to the personalized service, nothing compares to the fresh, clean feeling of getting a barbershop haircut. “You can get a regular haircut anywhere; but it’s completely different when a barber does it,” says Ryan (Bubba) Betancourt, owner of Tampa Bay Barbers. “When you get a haircut at a barbershop the whole feel is different.”

“Umbrellas for Peace

Created a Colorful Display of Togetherness in Tampa The kickoff to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay’s new awareness and recruitment campaign was a great success. Nearly 200 volunteer mentors, parents, and children attended “Umbrellas for Peace” on Sunday, July 14, at the Glazer Children’s Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. Bigs (volunteer mentors) and Littles (children) spent time discussing their thoughts about peace and helping the community, while painting umbrellas with messages of hope at the museum. Guided by stilt walkers from Busch Gardens, they then showcased their masterpieces during a colorful parade around Curtis Hixon Park. The parade culminated in the group forming a heart shape in the middle of the park. The “heart” is part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo. (See photos.) Umbrellas for Peace started out as art therapy for people affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has since blossomed into a global peace initiative. More than 2-million people from 29 countries have participated in artist Matt Lamb’s “Umbrellas for Peace” concept. Sunday was be the first time the event was held in Tampa. idea, Stephen Koch, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Inc., felt it was a perfect tie-in with our new recruitment initiative. "Just like umbrellas shield us from the rain and storms, good mentors can shield kids from some of life's harsher elements,” Koch said. In coming months, Big Brothers Big Sisters will host and partner in events intended to spur discussion about the need for mentors, especially men. Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters matched more than 1,700 kids with mentors in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties. Yet, more than 600 children re-

main on the waiting list. Statistics have shown the positive effects of the professionally supported mentoring that Big Brothers Big Sisters provides. In 2012, 99 percent of Littles had no involvement with the Department of Juvenile Justice, while 96 percent were promoted to the next grade. The local “Umbrellas for Peace” event was sponsored by: the Broadrick Family Foundation, Earth Tech and the Glazer Children’s Museum. The Glazer Children’s Museum, along with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, is a Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.

JC Audiology – Changing Lives with Better Hearing By Marcy Sanford Dr. Judith Reese of JC Audiology, located at 1541 Dale Mabry Highway in the North Fork Professional Center, has patients of all ages who are coping with hearing loss. “No one with hearing loss is too young for hearing aids but if you wait too long before getting hearing aids, it may become very difficult to find hearing aids that will work for you,” explains Dr. Reese. “With each passing year of untreated hearing loss, your brain suffers more and more auditory deprivation until the point when your brain is no longer able to process speech sounds normally.” Hearing loss can occur naturally as you grow older or it can be caused by trauma or illness. Dr. Reese has helped patients of all ages hear better at JC Audiology, from a mother in her 40s to grandparents in their 80s and all ages in between. Dr. Reese prides herself on helping her patients find hearing aids that fit their ears and their lifestyles and in the process she and her husband Charlie, the office manager for JC Audiol-

Dr. Judith Reese ogy, find that they are creating new friends for life. “I wish there was another word to describe how I feel besides just ‘Thank You’ for the gift of hearing – or being able to hear a whole new world,” writes one patient of JC Audiology. “It has meant so much for you to take the time with me throughout this whole process! I can’t wait to get fully adjusted to my ‘new ears.’”

One of the many reasons Dr. Reese is so successful in helping her patients find a hearing aid that works for them is that she focuses on a patient centered approach at JC Audiology. “All patients have different needs, lifestyles, and listening environments. This means a patient-centered approach to the fit and settings of a hearing aid are paramount to optimal hearing aid use. I’ve seen lots of patients who were unsatisfied with hearing aids purchased elsewhere become very satisfied once some simple adjustments were made in my clinic.” Dr. Reese has even had one patient who knows directly that his hearing aids helped save his life. “I thought you might like to hear a nice story regarding my hearing aids. We were taking a hike on a mountain trail in North Carolina with our black lab. All of a sudden, I heard a noise a few feet away from me, that frightening sound of a rattle. Believe it or not, I heard it before my wife and even our lab had not picked it up. I pulled on our dog and stopped my wife and we saw a large eastern diamondback

about 10 feet away on the path. Before my hearing aids, I would have probably kept right on walking until I was on top of him.” Being able to hear the sounds around you not only allows you to engage in life more fully but it has multiple social and health benefits. You’ll be amazed at how your life will change for the better when you can hear more clearly. “Unaided hearing loss is expensive and has social costs as well. It has been linked with frustration, embarrassment, social isolation, depression, and even dementia, all of which negatively affect your quality of life leading to increased hospitalizations and health care costs. Hearing aids are not a gadget to hang on your ears but an investment in better quality of life for your future for which there is really no price tag,” says Dr. Reese. At JC Audiology, Dr. Reese can help you select the hearing aids most appropriate for your listening needs while being cosmetically appealing and as friendly to your pocketbook as possible with several payment options available. I think of each patient like they were part of my family and treat them the way I would want a doctor to treat my mother, father, sister, or brother.” Dr. Reese can take care of all your hearing concerns at JC Audiology, from the comfortable sound proof booth for hearing tests to state-of-the art equipment like the video otoscopy, she can give you a complete ear exam

In addition to hearing aids, TV Streamers can help people with hearing loss enjoy social and cultural activities again. A television streaming accessory sends sound directly into hearing aids so all listeners hear clearly without the TV blaring. As a huge fan of barbecue, I know good barbecue when I taste it, and, as such, am constantly on the lookout for new places to try. What I especially enjoy about barbecue is that no two places are the same, as each restaurant has its own unique sauces and ways of preparing their dishes, leaving plenty of room for variation. As a fun way to scope out the area, this past month my husband

Matt and I went on a mission – a mission to find the best barbecue around the Carrollwood Area. Based upon suggestions by Carrollwood residents, we selected four local spots, which we decided to feature in our BBQ Battle contest. After sampling a variety of delicious selections from each of the restaurants the battle was too close to call, and each was so different that we were unable to choose a winner – so,

we need your help in determining the best! Showcased below are the four restaurants at which we dined. It is up to you to pick the winner. All you have to do is visit all four, try a comparable item from each and vote on which barbecue restaurant you thought was the best. After the votes are tallied up, the restaurant with the highest

number of votes will be the winner. And, for those who voted for that restaurant, their names will be entered in a random drawing and one lucky grand prize winner will receive $500 and a $25 gift certificate to that restaurant. Two other lucky winners will receive $25 each to the same winning restaurant. So, what are you waiting for – go get some barbecue today! - Alexix Selby

Alex's Southern Style BBQ

Wholly Smokes Bar-B-Que

Complete with ribs, chicken, beef, pork and sausage topped with their homemade bbq sauce, accompanied by two sides and two pieces of toast, the Big Boy Platter at Alex’s BBQ is guaranteed to satisfy your hunger and still leave you with enough to take home. The meats are tender and juicy, and their signature bbq sauce is just the right amount sweetness, perfectly complementing the subtly smoky aroma of the meats and tying in the yummy flavor.

A great way to sample the menu, the Wholly Smokes Combo boasts a huge portion size and features a little bit of everything – ribs, turkey, beef, pork, honey ham, sausage and lemon-pepper chicken. Coated with their signature dry rubs and spices before being smoked to excellence, the meat was so tender it literally melted in my mouth and the ribs were meaty and huge and the meat so juicy it was falling off the bone.

As the headline proudly reads “Very Southern, Very Country, Very Good”, Alex’s Southern Style BBQ is a reflection of owner Alex Cooks’ deliciously unique cooking style and southern upbringing; born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Running the restaurant alongside his sons Jorden, Alex, Chazz, and Dwyane, for over 20 years, Alex has been serving the community mouthwatering, slowcooked barbecue. Alex puts the same level of care into his customers that he does his

food. “We pride ourselves on taking care of our customers and provide people with a memorable experience,” says Alex. “One of the most important things about owing a restaurant is customer service and we do our best to make sure every customer leaves here satisfied.” Alex’s is located at 5362 West Village Drive in Tampa. For more information on Alex’s Southern Style BBQ please call (813) 2690050, or visit their website at www.AlexsBbqTampa.com.

Since 1985, Wholly Smokes BarB-Que has been a staple in the community and a common hangout for many local residents; including Robert Tungate, the current owner, who bought the restaurant last year due to his love of barbecue. Robert says, “We cook our food slow – a slab of ribs takes about 8 hours to cook, and the pork takes 6 hours. It's the personal attention to not only the food, but the customers as well that separates us. We are one of those ‘everybody knows your name’

restaurants.” Wholly Smokes also features an extensive list of sides, including garlic mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese, Texas toast, real – potato waffle fries, beans, and their most popular – corn nuggets, which are extremely addicting and oh so yummy! Wholly Smokes is located at 6803 N. Armenia Ave. in Tampa. For more information please call (813) 935-5879 or visit www.Facebook.com/Wholly Smokes Bar-B-Que.

Big Momma’s BBQ

Jazzy's BBQ

Allowing you to try a few different options, the Combination Platter is an ideal way to try the best of what Big Momma’s has to offer. We sampled the pork, sausage, brisket and ribs, as pictured above, which was complemented by their delightfully tangy signature barbecue sauce that was layered on top. The right combination of sweet and tangy, their barbecue sauce perfectly enhanced the strong smoky flavor of the delicious mouthwatering meats.

With a generous helping of ribs, chicken, beef, pork and sausage, the King of Kings Platter is for those who come with a big appetite. Slow cooked and brushed in a tasty rub, each of the meats on this platter were just as tender and flavorful as the previous. Most notable was their exquisitely yummy homemade barbecue sauce, with the choice of mild or hot, which accompanied the platter and added a little zing to this already amazing meal.

“Southern Style Cooking At Its Best”, Big Momma’s Smokehouse BBQ, owned by husband and wife team Kenneth and Christiane Stephens showcases true authentic southern barbecue, or as Kenneth likes to call it – “southern soul food”. Using a commercial smoker, Big Mamma’s slow cooks their meat to a consistently tender perfection every time. They make everything from scratch, including all their rubs, sides and desserts, and use only choice product meats and fresh quality in-

gredients. Kenneth and Christiane, who are often accompanied at the restaurant by their children Imaan and Kenneth, do a great job of providing a friendly atmosphere and, as Kenneth says, “When you want some good down-home cooking, come to Big Momma’s!” Big Momma’s Smokehouse BBQ is located at 2921 West Waters Ave. in Tampa. For more inf please call (813) 931-2288 or visit their website at www.BigMommasSmokehouseBbq.com.

Built on a dream, Jazzy's BBQ is founded upon owner and former Bucs defensive end Johnny Smith’s, devoted love of barbecue. "It was always my dream from when I was a little kid," says Johnny. Johnny runs Jazzy’s alongside his wife Pamela, son Kalen and daughter Jasmine, for whom the restaurant was named after, and together they create a family-friendly environment where customers become friends. “The recipe for our barbecue sauce is not just an old recipe – it is a

recipe that I dreamt of,” says Johnny. “I dreamt the ingredients and when I tasted them in my dreams I thought it was something that the whole world would enjoy.” Pamela says, "The special ingredient is that we love what we do. Our heart is in what we do, and to me that makes a difference” Jazzy’s BBQ is located at 5703 W Waters Ave. in Tampa. Whole Foods Market Carrollwood Brings Fresh and Local Food Options to North Tampa

With the opening of Tampa Bay’s second Whole Foods Market in the Northdale-Carrollwood area last fall, residents have the best selection of local, organic and specialty items available. As the first nationally certified organic grocer, Whole Foods Market Carrollwood offers an expansive produce department where more than 50 percent of the available fruits and vegetables are grown organically and more than 200 items come from local suppliers. “We try to source our products locally, because this not only helps local growers and has less of an impact on the environment, but it also allows us to provide the freshest offerings possible while supporting the local economy,” says Anna Payne, marketing and community relations team leader at the store. 100 Years Young at Heart On Sunday, June 9th, Weinberg Village residents celebrated the birthdays of three centenarians, whom at 100(+) years are still “young at heart”; Ruth Pross (100 on May 27), Ruth Sklar (103 on June 3) and Edythe Kessler (103 on June 15). Residents enjoyed a birthday party in honor of the three women to celebrate their milestones, complete with music, entertainment, and, of course, a large birthday cake.

Edythe Kessler

Ruth Pross with Son Ron Pross

Edythe Kessler was born June 15, 1910 in Fort Valley, Georgia before moving with her family to Clermont, FL. While in Clermont, she worked for the family business, Kessler’s Department Store, and continued to work there even after she married the late Simon Kessler in 1935. The two met through family when they were young and Simon asked her to a dance when they matured. The rest was history. Three children later, the couple moved

before Irving was deployed overseas for WWII. The two fell in love and maintained a long distance relationship. When Irving returned in 1945, the couple was happily married less than thirty days later. After leaving New York in 1975, the Pross’ headed to Florida where they raised their family and continued to enjoy the journey toward their 58-year marriage. Ruth and Irving were blessed with two children, Ron and Arthur (who unfortunately passed away at a very young age); three grandchildren:

Ruth Pross Ruth has lived at Weinberg Village for a little over three years. When asked about her longevity, she said, “God is good to me, He keeps me going. Being here at Weinberg has been wonderful because I am closer to my son and daughter-in-law, the staff is very helpful, and there are many activities to choose from every day.” Ruth was born in Brooklyn (Borough Park), New York in 1913. She took business classes throughout high school and later worked as a bookkeeper for many years before marrying Irving Pross in 1945. Ruth and Irving met through family and friends in 1940

to South Tampa in 1948 and became long time members of Congregation Schaarai Zedek. Simon and Edythe always felt blessed by their family of three children: Beverly, Jean, and Martin; three grandchildren: Andrew, Lori, and Jim; and four great grandchildren Michael, Sam, Ryan, and Rachel. “Mom always had an open door policy and on weekends, family would come from different areas to visit,” reminisced Edythe’s daughter Beverly during a recent family birthday celebration. “As soon as they got there, Mom was already defrosting food and cooking for the family. In fact, our cousin just referred to her as the ‘family treasure’ and that’s the truth.” Through the years, Edythe loved the arts, as well as knitting, baking, cooking and playing the piano. While at Weinberg Village, Edythe can still be found playing the piano for other residents when she is not busy reading a good book or taking long daily walks down the hallways to stay in shape. After being asked about the values she lives by, Edythe answered, “I have enjoyed my life and family. I believe in God and in helping people. We should share what we have. When people are hungry we should feed them. Those are

Ruth Sklar the values I have passed on to my children.”

Ruth Sklar Ruth Sklar was born the youngest of six children in New York City on June 3, 1910. Ruth’s advice to the next generation is, “Be a good person and be nice to everybody. If you do that, you’ll have a great life. It’s what I did and now I thank God every day for being alive and still of sound mind!” Ruth was invited to a local social club event in 1934 where she met her future husband, Abraham Sklar. The two married and went on to have three children: Sherman, Joseph, and Gail; six grandchildren: Kerri, Jamie, David, Michael, Aaron, and Evan; and thirteen

great grandchildren: Alexander, Carli, Sadie, Ryker, Tayla, Adam, Jenna, Jordan, Darryn, Elijah, Asher, Levi, and new born baby, Reyna. Ruth was a stay-at-home mom until her children grew older, when she went to work for the City of New York as a civil service Proctor and derived much joy from this career. When Abe retired, the couple moved to Delray Beach where they spent many happy years enjoying the Florida lifestyle until Abe passed in 1996. Ruth’s son Sherman commented, “Ruth can attribute her long and happy life to good health, love of family, and positive attitude that allows her to get along with everybody. Ruth has been a resident of Weinberg Village for almost 7 years and loves the food, staff and activities. Even at 103, she stays busy with all her activities and many friends making it difficult to reach her by day.”

“New Beijing” Continued from page 1 Highly engaged in the restaurant’s day-to-day activities, Angel serves as the restaurant’s head waitress, and makes sure all customers are treated with the utmost of quality service. She notes that the hours have just been expanded to include Mondays, so they’re now open for business seven days a week, offering their classic Chinese dishes, their tasty Thai and Vietnamese specialties, along with some traditional American favorites! They continue to offer low-carb and vegetarian options as well, and will gladly try to accommodate special requests for those with dietary restrictions, whenever possible. Customer favorites at New Beijing include their Chicken Lo Mein, Chicken Chow Mein and of course, the Fried Rice – which is excellent! Angel specified though, that their General Tso’s Chicken and their Sesame Chicken are hands down, their top sellers. If you have a hankering for cooked sushi, there is a complete menu of rolls available, most notably, the Volcano Roll, the Mexican Roll, the Spicy Eel Roll and the California Roll. When you absolutely must have

a taste of Thai, consider trying the Panang, Spicy Yellow or Green Curry, or their Pad Thai or Massaman, all of which are sure to please. For those who enjoy Vietnamese cuisine, you are in for a treat with an assortment of tempting Pho Soup (Chicken, Shrimp or Beef available). There is also an extensive vegetarian menu, which features many classic preparations using tofu as well as a number of other appealing plates featuring assorted vegetables, noodles and/or eggs. It could quite well be viewed as a vegetarian’s paradise! At New Beijing, you can even order some BBQ ribs or a NY Strip Steak if you are looking for something that has a classic American ring to it. I went for dinner one Wednesday evening, and the Honey Walnut Shrimp spoke to me. While sipping on a tasty imported beer called Tsingtao and dipping crispy fried noodles into a unique and tasty duck sauce, I put in my order. With a few minutes to look around and take a substantial pulse of the place, I noted that the wait staff was very engaging and quite efficient, skillfully handling their customers’ needs in a pleasant, professional manner. Behind me, I noticed some tempting cheesecakes and gigantic cupcakes that had to more than satisfy

Then, while perusing the menu a little more, I saw that red, white and plum wines, as well as sake, and domestic and imported Chinese beer were served beyond the traditional soft drinks, iced tea, Thai tea, hot tea, coffee and bottled water. I was absolutely floored when my entrée was brought to the table so

quickly; looking even more appealing than the photo displayed in the online menu! The freshness of the broccoli was visibly apparent and the presentation of the lightly sauced tempura-battered shrimp nestled within it couldn’t have been more impressive. My senses were all put into play, which made the meal thoroughly enjoyable. Hats off

Owner Ryan, better known as “Bubba”, knows what it takes to run a successful barbershop and has done an exceptional job of providing a familyfriendly, clean, well-kept shop that is the ideal place for both children and adults. “We strive to offer familyfriendly, quality service,” says Bubba. “When you walk in you feel comfortable. The environment and the vibe is an experience in itself. When you come here you are not just getting a good haircut; you are getting the whole experience.” The barbers work great with children and do a fantastic job of creating unique hair designs for kids on sports teams who are looking for a cool way to represent their team. They even offer a discounted group rate. Born and raised in Tampa Bay, Bubba has a strong sense of community pride, and, as such, is a huge Bucs fan, which is made quite obvious from the moment you walk through the front doors into their beautifully decorated shop. Perhaps most obvious of the décor are the magnificently painted wall murals, hand painted by Matt Callahan from Man Made Murals, which really add to the splendor and immaculate presentation of the shop. Bubba is very confident in his business and the ability of his staff, and prides himself on offering the very best quality haircuts and styles. He adds, “If you come in here once, I believe we will have you as a customer for life.”

Bubba realized his dream of becoming a barber nearly a decade ago, on one of many visits to his local barbershop. After talking with his barber, he decided to go to school, and it was there that he realized his true passion for cutting hair. Bubba says, “I knew right away that that was what I wanted to do.” Eight years later, Bubba still has the same love for what he does and really cherishes the relationships he has built over the past 8 years. Bubba is accompanied by seven talented stylists; Steve Faedo, Nat Cardenas, Johnny Martinez, Tony Dobi, Alberto Castillo, Ricky Iglesias and

Each brings a little something different to the shop. Bubba says, “Every barber in here is talented in their own way and they each hold their own unique style. Everyone is very professional and great at what they do.” “I have been cutting hair my entire life,” says Nat Cardenas. “When I was young, my dad got tired of taking me to the barbershop so, instead, he
