Community News Briefs The Right Fit™ Foundation Announces Scholarship Winners – Five Tampa Area High School Seniors Awarded College Scholarships The Right Fit™ Foundation (www.TheRighFitFoundation.org) announced its first annual scholarship recipients yesterday. Students were selected based upon their academic profile, an interview, and other qualifications. The Right Fit™ Foundation is a Tampabased non-profit 501(c)(3), dedicated to educating families about the college admission and financial aid process. Founder Kenneth Albert says, “We are extremely excited to announce that we were able to give away, not only our

main $5,000 prize, but also four $1,000 prizes; totaling $9,000 this year. We hope to award even more next year!” The five scholarship recipients are: Brant Wickersham, Wharton High ($5,000), Marilyn Boamah, Wiregrass Ranch High ($1,000), Cameron Jeffords, Hillsborough High ($1,000), Lauren Sprague, Sunlake High ($1,000) and Lucas Hopegood, Freedom High ($1,000.) Applicants applied for the scholarship after attending one of The Right Fit™ Foundation’s free college admission and financial aid classes. Brant Wickersham, winner of the $5,000 scholarship, says that the class taught him, “the importance of the FAFSA and the common mistakes many people make when filling it out. On my own

Westchase Area Neighborhood News

form, I had multiple mistakes that had the potential to decrease total funds allocated to me.” He says he is honored to receive this scholarship because, “I am able to take a little of the financial burden off of my parents and I will have a lot less student loans to pay off in the end.”

Helping Students Find the Right Fit™ Kenneth Albert created The Right Fit ™ Foundation to provide free classes to the community on how to select the right college, how to maximize financial aid, and how to reduce the family's outof-pocket expenses. Inspired by his own experience of changing careers mid-life, he realized that students and their parents often miss the real heart of planning for college – getting the right fit to begin with. As a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, he also noticed the trend in students taking longer to complete college degrees, as well as accruing more student loan debt. He wrote the book Finding the Right Fit: The Ultimate Guide to College (Mill City Press, 2009) to help families navigate the college search process and help students choose their career path wisely.

Scholarships For College All five of this year’s scholarship

winners fall into the “middle income” category. “These families often do not qualify for need-based financial aid and borrow more on average to pay for college,” says Albert. He is excited to offer this scholarship again next year, and hopes to expand the program. The information and application for the 2014 Right Fit™ Foundation Scholarship is already posted on their website – www.TheRightFitFoundation.org. To qualify, students must be a US Citizen, a resident of Pasco, Hillsborough or Pinellas counties, and have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must also attend one of the Foundation’s upcoming free college admission and financial aid classes along with their parents or guardians. Students can register to attend a class on the website as well. Finalists may be asked to complete an interview. The scholarship is a one-time award (non-renewable) and will be paid directly to the accredited four-year college or university the winner chooses to attend. "The Right Fit Foundation™ is excited to help these very deserving Tampa students this year and others like them in the future,” says Albert. For more information about The Right Fit™ Foundation please visit their website at www.TheRightFitFoundation.org.

Spiro J. Verras – Proudly Serving the Community Since 1993 By Marcy Sanford Throughout his 20-year career, attorney Spiro J. Verras has been a tireless advocate for his clients. Now, with his own law firm focusing on estate planning, probate and trust, as well as real estate transactions and business services, he brings the same personal passion to his transactional work that he has always brought to litigation; taking the time to truly understand his clients’ concerns and working with them on an individual basis. As an added bonus, Spiro’s office is tri-lingual, speaking English, Spanish and Greek. Spiro Verras received his B.A. at Yale University and his law degree at Tulane Law School. After graduating from Tulane Law School, Spiro joined a large New Orleans law firm, where he focused on corporate and business law, and eventually became managing partner. After branching off to open a

new firm with two colleagues, Spiro championed civil rights suits, serious personal injury, environmental law, and consumer cases for his clients. Spiro’s years of expertise and knowledge coupled with his open manner and friendly demeanor mean that when you work with him, you are getting a lawyer who will not only take the time to help you and listen to your needs, but also one who genuinely cares about you and your well-being. Spiro grew up in Tarpon Springs, and after working in large law firms across the United States, he moved back to Tampa and currently resides in the Westchase area. “Several years ago, I was working as the in-house lawyer for a social media company,” says Spiro. “I realized that I missed helping clients solve problems and so I decided to open my own firm. I enjoy the fact that I can take my time to truly help each client.”

Estate Planning No matter your net worth, it is important to have a plan in place for your assets after you die. “Everyone has a natural tendency to avoid thinking about death,” says Spiro. “But it is very important that you have a plan in place so that your assets are protected for your loved ones. If you don’t, the state of Florida will determine how your assets are distributed.” Estate planning not only guarantees that your assets will be distributed the way you want, but it also means you are covered if an accident or health issue leaves you incapacitated. Who do you want handling your financial affairs? Who do you want making medical decisions for you? Do you want a Living Will? All of these questions and more can be answered with a thorough estate plan, and with the help of Spiro, you and your family will remain protected should the unthinkable happen. It is important to have the answers to these questions documented

because if you don’t, the state will be the ones deciding who answers these crucial questions about your health. “Many Spiro J. Verras times people Attorney at Law come to my office and they are not sure where to start or what documents they need,” says Spiro. “I can guide them through the process of setting up an estate plan. Many people don’t realize that it’s really not a big expense to set up these crucial documents, while the peace of mind they deliver is priceless.” Whether you need a comprehensive estate plan or not, you should at

the very least have a will; especially if you own property. A will tells the world exactly where you want your assets to be distributed when you die. It’s also the best place to name guardians for your children. Again, if you don’t have this important document in place, the state will decide how your assets are distributed and who takes care of your children.

Probate and Trust Administration Probate planning is what helps protect your assets after you pass away. If you have the right plan in place, you can be assured that your assets will go to the people, charities, or institutions that you want them to, both quickly and easily; without being tied up in

court for months and months. If you own property in other states, a revocable trust can help you avoid probate in those states, making the process easier and more cost efficient for your heirs. Spiro knows the right questions to ask and can help you determine what approach to probate planning would be beneficial for your estate. There are many different types of trusts that Spiro can help you set up, including those that can lessen the sting of estate taxes and a living trust that allows your estate to avoid probate and protects your privacy.

assist you in major steps throughout your life – like buying a new home or setting up a family business. Spiro says, “In addition to helping my clients set up a company if needed, I can help them ensure that their company is secure and that their heirs are protected in case of an accident.” Spiro also offers title and closing services. “Many people, especially those from the Northeast, prefer to have a real estate lawyer handle closings. Since title companies and lawyers charge the same rates for title insurance throughout Florida, the choice is really a matter of personal preference.” Life is full of surprises and challenges, and it is good to know that you can have someone like Spiro Verras looking out for you and making sure that you and your family are protected no matter what challenges may come your way. “I really enjoy getting

to know my clients on a personal level and making sure we have protected them and are working to fulfill their wishes,” says Spiro. “I follow up with clients regularly to make sure their documents are up-to-date and to see what changes may have occurred since the last time we talked. You should always be sure to update your estate plan after any major life event.” Spiro Verras has two convenient office locations – one in Palm Harbor at 31640 U.S. Hwy. 19 N, Suite 4 (located behind Pier One Imports) and the other in Tampa’s Hyde Park Village at1509 W. Swann Ave., Suite 240A. To schedule an appointment call (813) 2286800 for his Tampa office, (727) 493-2900 for his Palm Harbor office, or email him at contact@verras-law.com. Entrepreneurial Style – Four Stylists Find Their Place at Salon Lofts Stylists Photos by lilfrecklefacephotography.com When I visited Salon Lofts on Tampa Road in Oldsmar to meet four stylists who are opening up their own Lofts there, I was very impressed with the swanky feel of the space – as if you’ve steeped off a side street in Manhattan to a quiet, upscale salon and spa. The four ambitious, young stylists that I spoke with – Katy Yeager, Melissa McGrade, Cicely McKee and Heather Winder – were attracted not just by the great décor and premium products offered at Salon Lofts; they also loved the way the company encourages entrepreneurship by providing them with a range of online tools and a personalized marketing platform where they can grow their own business, and easily manage their schedules online where it is a breeze for clients to log on and set an appointment. Katy Yeager – in Loft 2 – is an Aveda Institute graduate and has been doing hair in the area for eight years. Katy continued on with her education after

graduation from cosmetology school is certified to teach in-salon training. “I love the concept of Salon Lofts,” says Katy. “Changing into this atmosphere has made every one of us happier. It has reignited our passion.” Katy is passionate about both cuts and color, and many of her clients come to her for her great blonde highlights. With far more than 14,000 hours behind the chair, Katy pays incredible attention to detail, and is dedicated to providing a standard of service that is unrivaled starting with a detailed consultation to cater to each guest’s specific needs. Katy treats clients to a scalp massage and a hot towel treatment. “There would be no greater compliment than the opportunity to service you and gain your trust as your hair specialist.” - Katy Yeager Heather Winder – Loft 4 – has worked in the salon business for 14 years. “I’ve spent my whole career at Aveda,” says Heather. “This is my first big move

but I wanted to create a more personable space for my clients.” The Salon Lofts ambiance is perfect for Heather and her clients, with its beautifully appointed loft space, personalized by Heather and her friend and fellow Loft buddy, Cicely McKee. “I love being able to have my own business without tons of overhead. Salon Lofts provides a lot of support for us.” Heather loves making her clients’ locks shine with beauty and is very passionate about natural-looking color and classic style. Cicely McKee – Loft 4 – has been a hairstylist with Aveda for 17 years. Cicely started doing hair in high school and went to Dunedin High School’s cosmetology program before attending the Aveda Institute. “I love my coworkers,” says Cicely, who shares Loft 4 with stylist Heather Winder. “We are excited to be independent stylists and small business owners.” Salon Lofts allows each stylist to use their favorite product line. Cicely uses Davines, and says, “It

I love my career and trying new things.” Melissa McGrade – Loft 3 – is also an Aveda Institute trained hairstylist. “I have been in the hair industry for 12 successful years,” says Melissa. “I found my passion for hair up in Michigan where I attended and graduated from the Aveda Institute. I enjoy my craft and creativity when it comes to enhancing a person overall color and style. Cutting comes naturally to me and I love both cuts and color. It is fun making people look pretty and the results are immediate, which is what I like. I love what my work brings to a person’s attitude and self-confidence. We are in the

“Aki Sushi” Continued from page 1 restaurants." "Without him, this wouldn't exist," says Beimei as she talks about, Daniel Kohler, her husband of ten years, “he has really supported me with my dream of running a restaurant.” Beimei, who was born and raised in China, started her career as a banker. One day, she stumbled upon a job in the restaurant industry. Beimei says, “The decision to leave the bank to work in a restaurant completely changed the course of my life. I found my passion, and shortly after I found my husband.” Beimei, who runs Aki Sushi with Daniel and their six year old daughter Sophie, who can often be found socializing with the tables and helping to entertain guests and their children. The remaining key component at Aki Sushi is their amazing sushi chef, Tad Winegar, whose talent and creativity for making sushi is truly one-of-a-kind. At Aki Sushi you are more than just a customer, you are a friend; and that is exactly how you will be treated from the moment you walk through their doors. Beimei brightens the restaurant with her beautiful, upbeat personality. You can tell she really cares about each of her guests as she takes the time to get to

Unique Rolls & Fresh Cuisine Aside from the personalized service and welcoming atmosphere, there is something else that separates Aki Sushi from other restaurants in the area – their amazing sushi! Since our first visit to Aki Sushi, my husband and I, and our entire family for that matter, have been hooked on their exquisite cuisine. Their menu, which offers a nice variety, showcases sushi-bar appetizers such as Tuna/Salmon Nachos – a delicious mix of raw spicy tuna and salmon served over crispy wonton chips, and

Tuna Tataki – lightly seared tuna served with ponzu sauce and sesame seeds. They also serve kitchen appetizers, including their newly featured Fire Cracker Shrimp – pankoed shrimp tossed in a sweet and spicy creamy sauce. Their Tuna/Salmon Salad - raw tuna, salmon and avocado, marinated in ponzu sauce, scallions and ginger, served a top a bed of mixed greens, is a must-try menu item! Every bit as delicious as it sounds; this salad is fresh and light and with each bite the flavors just melt in your mouth. When it comes to their sushi, their rolls are some of the best I have ever had. A couple of my favorites include their Candy Cane Roll, boasting a delicious combination of spicy tuna, fresh

If you’re not in the mood for a raw fish delicacy – Aki Sushi also has a variety of cooked rolls, such as their Kamikaze Roll. In this roll, Krab mix, avocado, cucumber and crispy tilapia w/spicy mayo & eel sauce come together perfectly for a taste that is out of this world. My absolute favorite – which I recommend to anyone and everyone – is their Flaming Ocean Roll. Made with baked assorted fish, shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, crunch, scallions, spicy mayo, wasabi mayo and sesame

Before being served, sushi chef Tad takes a blow torch to the roll, which in effect gives it a smoky flavor that is unlike anything I have every had before. Aki Sushi offers many gluten-free options for their rolls, which is nearly impossible to find at any other sushi restaurant in the Tampa Bay Area. “Most people think all sushi rice is gluten-free, but that is not the case,” says Beimei. In fact, most sushi restaurants use regular rice vinegar (which contains gluten). At Aki we pay double the price for 100% Gluten-free sushi vinegar. So, when we say gluten-free

sushi we mean it.” (she adds, “please note that while our rice is 100% glutenfree we do not have a separate, glutenfree preparation area.”) Beimei and sushi chef Tad are constantly coming up with ideas for new rolls, infusing new flavors and experimenting with unique creations. “80% of our customers are regulars who come in at least once a week. We like to keep our customers interested and intrigued with exciting new options, so we feature new rolls each week.” Aki Sushi is actively involved in the community, recently participating in the Oldsmar Cares Event. I had the spider roll, with yellow tail, white tuna, tuna, and salmon. The flavors literally melted together in my mouth; it was extremely tasty. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a different spot to enjoy great sushi at a reasonable price. “Dr. Makram” Continued from page 1 Dentistry of Westchase. It is absolutely essential and beneficial to bring children in at the recommended age to establish this ever-so-important connection. This mission of preventative dental education is also a shared effort with each and every member of Dr. Makram’s team, which has grown tremendously in the past year. This growth is great news for potential patients because Pediatric Dentistry of Westchase can now accommodate appointment needs more fluidly and tactfully. New patients are also able to complete initial patient information requirements online to expedite the process; allowing them to meet with you sooner. Because of this growth, they have also extended their hours of operation, allowing for more appointment openings. Dr. Makram says, “Certainly my passion and love is working with and treating children, but even more so, I get to teach them the importance of oral health.” From their first visit, this type of information is not only shared with the child, but also the parents. At Pediatric Dentistry of Westchase, parents are encouraged to come back to the exam room during their child’s appointment so they too can learn about preventative measures they can take to maintain a mouth full of healthy teeth. This also helps Dr. Makram and her team to catch small problems before they get out of hand and cause permanent dental damage. It is recommended by the American Academy for Pediatric Dentistry that a child start visiting the dentist by their first birthday. This is a goal for Pediatric Dentistry of Westchase as well. “Parents often bring their children in for their first visit at age three or four and unfortunately they already have a mouth full of cavities,” explains Dr. Makram. Dental complications in extremely young patients can sometimes be a result of inconsistent oral health practices after breastfeeding or formula intake and it is necessary to

From the first visit, Pediatric Dentistry of Westchase strives to make sure there is not a lack of knowledge of these important practices and also welcomes the opportunity to establish a relationship early on with both you and your child.
