Happy Thanksgiving from New Tampa Lifestyles

As the holidays quickly approach, bringing along with them a whirlwind of festivities and celebrations, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving from all of us here at the South Tampa Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. From our dedicated advertisers to our loyal readers, it is you we have to thank for our continued success and growth over the past few years. It is all of us working together that keeps our community strong – from our local business owners to all the other hard-working employees and entrepreneurs that call this area home. To so many, Thanksgiving is not just about getting together and celebrating with family and friends over a delicious meal of turkey, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie, but also signifies a time to reflect on the past year and give thanks for the many blessings in their lives – including the joyous opportunity to be united for such an occasion. This Thanksgiving I would like

to take the opportunity to say how grateful I am to be part of such an extraordinary community! The past few years I have been writing for the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles I have had the chance to meet so many amazing local business owners and they have really left a lasting impression! They are some of the most dedicated, honest, hard-working people I have ever met, who, no matter how busy, will still find time and money to support local school programs, athletics programs and many other great charities. It has been a real pleasure getting to know the people in this community and I look forward to many great years to come! The Neighborhood News & Lifestyles team would also like to thank you, all of our readers, for your continued support over the past year. We wish you a prosperous and bountiful Thanksgiving and many happy years to come! This Thanksgiving, millions of people across the country will come

together with their closest friends and family. Wherever you may be and however you may celebrate, I encourage you to think about the many things in your life that you have to be thankful for and take a moment to show gratitude and appreciation. As Henri J.M. Nouwen once said, “Gratitude goes beyond the ‘mine’ and ‘thine’ and claims the truth that all of life is a pure gift.

In the past I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.”

Hillel Academy partners with Tampa Urban Benefit Farms and Hillsborough County Family Partnership Alliance Hillel Academy is not new to gardening. The school has had an Earth Box vegetable garden for many years, but now the school has a true farm program and it is the first school-based TUB Farm hydroponic farm in the Tampa Bay area! Hillel Academy partnered with TUB Farms, Tampa Urban Benefit Farms, a local non-profit organization that gives students multiple learning opportunities while providing fresh produce to food insecure members of our community. The school is the first school in a pilot program designed to connect “farmer” schools with beneficiary agencies that will distribute the vegetables and herbs to their clients while the students learn about innovative agriculture and grow systems. TUB Farm founder Nava Kirk approached Head of School Amy Wasser with the idea of placing a TUB Farm on school property. It was a natural choice to reach out to Hillel Academy, Tampa Bay’s premier community day school, as Ms. Kirk is a school alumna. Middle School science teacher Amy Basham serves as Hillel Academy’s liaison and TUB Farm manager. According to Ms. Kirk, “Hillel Academy is a progressive school that I

knew would embrace a program like TUB Farms. The incredible reception from students and faculty is more than we could have hoped for. We understand that teachers are incredibly busy, so we are designed it as a program to assist teachers with maintaining the TUB Farm, as well as to provide guidance on curriculum, give tours to students and coordinate the donation of the vegetables.” “We are only as healthy as the food we put into our bodies, and for far too many in our community who rely on food assistance, the access to truly healthy nutritious food is extremely limited,” says Ms. Kirk. “Students at Hillel Academy and TUB Farms would like to be part of the solution.” “HCFPA is excited about the new partnership with Hillel Academy and the TUB Farms. We look forward to sharing fresh fruits and vegetables with the foster families and the needy of our community that come to our food pantry to a receive food on a monthly basis,” says Kim Hernandez, HCFPA President. The TUB Farm is a school-wide endeavor at Hillel Academy. Each class attended hydroponic farm lessons and planted its own tower of 16 plants, which they monitor frequently. The TUB Farm vegetables were grown from both seed and seedling and almost every student has planted his or her own seed or sprout. Fall crops growing at Hillel Academy include cucumbers, swiss chard, lettuce, squash, green beans and basil. “In my opinion,” says Mrs. Basham, “growing food crops contributes an incredibly important aspect to a child’s education. In today’s world of processed and factory-produced everything, students often forget that much of their food originated as a plant that can be grown, harvested and enjoyed. All branches of science can be taught through the simple process of growing a vegetable garden. When students are able to contribute to growing vegetables, they are able to connect with the science, see its validity in their lives, and hopefully learn to make wise science-based food choices as they grow up. If we can add an element of donating the vegetables to serve our community, the experience becomes even more meaningful.” VOLUME 1 ISSUE 6

Barkdoll Massage Therapy, Where the Massage Comes to You By Julie Kanehl Licensed Massage Therapist Karla Barkdoll

6

VOLUME 1 ISSUE 6

Massage is a universal language that has been “spoken” for centuries in every region of the globe, and it has many benefits including the ability to reduce anxiety, relieve pain, reduce blood pressure, and aid in relaxation. For many people, massage is a rare treat that they look forward to at the spa or as an experience during their vacation. Others use massage on a regular basis to help with chronic pain, reduce inflammation or to help heal after an injury. Whatever your reason for wanting a massage, Barkdoll Massage Therapy makes it easy, affordable and best of all, Barkdoll comes to you. Barkdoll Massage Therapy, which is an entirely mobile-based massage business, is based in the Tampa Bay area and is owned and operated by Licensed Professional, Karla Barkdoll, who has been in the massage industry since 2001. Serving South Tampa and the surrounding communities, Barkdoll Massage Therapy is completely different in that it takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bringing it straight to you. No traffic, no stress, just pure relaxation where you feel most comfortable! Originally from a small town in central

Pennsylvania, Karla moved to Baltimore where she trained at the Baltimore School of Massage. Licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia and Florida, Karla is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them so that she can create the best personalized massage experience. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!”

Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for

chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. This massage is very popular all over the world because of its light, long, and slow strokes that relax your cares and worries away. If you are interested in trying something a little different, hot stone massages use something called warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage. According to Karla, the warm stones dissolve muscle tension and induce a deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life.

Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients recently said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kindhearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Karla uses specially designed massage table pillows that create a comfortable position just for her during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in

relaxation, which is why Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple recently wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!” If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them!

My Massage with Karla I am a huge fan of massages. I go every chance I get, but to be honest, that isn’t very often. When I’m not busy with my family or writing for the Neighborhood News, I’m like most moms and am usually concerned with everyone else’s comfort over my own. That’s why I was so excited to be given the chance to experience one of Karla’s massages by the staff at Neighborhood News. (Thanks Jim!) Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! On the evening of my massage appointment, I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla arrived right on time and brought everything she needed with her. A true professional, Karla even wears a clinical massage uniform. Within just a few minutes Karla had set up the massage table and was set For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

up and ready to go. I was really impressed with how quickly the room I had picked had been transformed. Before we started she spoke to me about what kind of massage treatment I wanted, and she asked if I had any injuries that she needed to be aware of. We decided on a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage. She also offered me many different aromatherapy options from rose oil to eucalyptus. I felt totally at ease, and while she stepped out of the room, I comfortably got onto the massage table and got settled. When Karla came back in a moment later, she put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! This was an incredibly cool experience that made me feel more centered, and really changed my outlook. I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. I can see that a massage with Karla would be a great gift, which is why I’m so happy that she offers gift certificates, but one of the best parts about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is. I might not have to wait for a special occasion because her pricing is competitive and affordable enough to fit into anyone’s budget on a regular basis. From now on, I’m going to take better care of myself, and that includes having massage treatments from Barkdoll Massage Therapy on a regular basis. See you in a few weeks Karla! Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. by appointment only. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372- 6389 or email Karla at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com VOLUME 1 ISSUE 6

Let the Savings Begin! The Tampa Premium Outlets in Lutz is Now Open! By Julie Kanehl Tampa Premium Outlets is the long-awaited outlet mall that has Lutz and Wesley Chapel at the center of a lot of attention! Located at 2300 Grand Cypress Drive in Lutz, just off of S.R. 56 and west of I75, its location is convenient to all of Tampa Bay. Tampa Premium Outlets opened its doors on October 29th at 10 a.m. to excited crowds, impressive lines and of course, a lot of great deals. Owned by The Simon Property Group, which owns retail properties in 37 states and Puerto Rico, Tampa Premium Outlets has a lot of experience designing crowd-pleasing retail centers like this one. Their Grand Opening event included music, fireworks, and the opening of 103 stores, including popular brands like Coach, Nike Factory, Vera Bradley, Calvin Klein, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors. Anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, Tampa Premium Outlets is a 441,000 sq. ft. retail center that has more than 20 shoe stores, alone. Add in some fun dining options like Johnny Rockets (which will actually be opening on November 12th), a playground area for the kiddos, and savings that you just won’t find at other malls, and it’s no surprise that people are flocking to the new shopping center in droves!

Grand Opening Success! The main courtyard at Tampa Premium Outlets was abuzz throughout the day with live entertainment, contests and giveaways, and even stilt walkers made the rounds as many guests lined up at their favorite stores, eager to be one of the first ones in the door. Many of the stores offered gifts to the first 100 people inside, like Helzberg Diamonds, who offered a free pearl bracelet and extra savings to their first customers. There was a lot of excitement for kids of all ages at the Disney Outlet Store, as they gave away special edition Mickey ears to their first paying customers while supplies lasted. While many retailers used coupons, giveaways and outlet exclusives to garner excitement, some stores just needed to be there-like the Coach store, which had a line snaking half way down the corridor before the mall

even opened. Some of these stores are simply beautiful from a retail standpoint. Immaculately merchandised, every store displays its brand with pride: Stores like Swarovski simply sparkled, Kitchen Collection has you wanting to become a chef, and did I mention that there’s a Lindt Chocolate and an Auntie Anne’s? All the excitement and crowds aside, the employees of Tampa Premium Outlet and of the individual

outlet stores were simply fantastic. Everyone was super-informative, helpful and while the mall was busy, it was a pleasurable place to shop! I spoke to one local shopper who came to the Grand Opening with her mom and her two young children, she said, “I’ve gotten some great deals! I’m really happy we came. The lines to pay are long, but worth it.” She also said, “I really like that there are lots of areas to sit and rest between shopping!”

Simon Properties did a great job of designing the shopping center to have plenty of seating, so that while there are more than a hundred great shops to see, it doesn’t have to feel like a marathon.

Become a Tampa Premium Outlets VIP! The best news is that, while the opening weekend has come and gone, the savings will continue! It’s been printed that the savings at a Simon

As a Tampa Premium Outlets VIP, you have the opportunity to earn extra savings that aren’t made public! It’s totally free, and it’s easy to sign up on their website! One you sign up, you simply print your voucher and take it to guest relations to pick up your VIP Coupon Book, and let me tell you, you’ll feel like a VIP, because these savings can be combined with the savings and discounts in the stores. Some examples include 10% off your entire purchase at Sketchers, $25 off your purchase of $100 or more at Vera Bradley and $15 off your purchase of $30 or more at Yankee Candle. This is just a fraction of the discounts! These sav-

ings last throughout the season, so get online, get your voucher and start racking up those savings! Tampa Premium Outlets is the perfect place to save money while shopping, and it’s also bringing a lot of jobs to the area as many of the retailers are still hiring!
