Teachers at Corbett Prep in North Tampa organized the April 23 event to help out their former student, Schuyler Arakawa, who graduated from Corbett Prep’s middle school in 2007 and later attended Berkeley Preparatory School and Yale University. Schuyler was on a rafting expedition in Colombia in February when a large rock fell from 30 feet above and landed directly on her head. The impact crushed her skull, collapsed her lungs, fractured her spine and broke her legs. Through a series of miracles and outpouring of help internationally, Schuyler was transported from Colombia to Miami and is now recovering in a rehabilitation center. The “Schuy is the Limit” benefit celebrated Schuyler through live performances of music she loved as well as an original composition. The money raised will help offset the costs of Schuyler’s rehabilitation not covered by insurance.

Ron Dennison Insurance “Everyone Lives in a Flood Zone” By Deborah Bostock-Kelley If you are purchasing a home in Florida and it is anywhere near hurricane season, Ron Dennison, owner of Ron Dennison Insurance, 8019 N Himes Avenue, stresses the importance of not waiting to buy insurance until the last minute. “Don’t wait until a day before you close during hurricane season. A hurricane watch or warning in the state of Florida will suspend the binding. Outside of hurricane season, however, you can buy a policy the day before you close, as there’s not going to be any suspension.” Dennison gave an example. “If, for example, you are buying a house and everything is getting set up for a June 20th closing, you may want to lock in your coverage at least a week before. If the storm is projected to be coming right to the Bay area on the 18th, once the warning or watch is issued, the insurance companies

12

JUNE 2016

will suspend bindings. This means you are not going to be able to close on the 20th, or get the insurance. You will have to wait for the storm to pass. Your safest bet is to buy the policy prior to any warning or watches and write it up now, in case a hurricane develops. That way, you bought the coverage effective for June 20th and you locked in coverage before the suspension, and your closing won’t be delayed.” Additionally, if you’re not buying a house or obtaining a loan, Dennison explained that there is a 30 day waiting period on purchasing flood insurance. “The reason that is, is if there is a massive storm coming and they know there is going to be flooding, the NFIP doesn’t want people running out and buying a policy. That’s how they protect themselves.” In the last 5 years, Dennison has seen many new carriers coming into the state of Florida. He said, “Now

private carriers are offering flood insurance. That’s one of the biggest changes. Private flood insurance is an alternative to the NFIP federal program.” When asked who actually needs flood insurance, Dennison responded, “Everyone. Everyone lives in a flood zone. What people don’t understand is that every property in the United States is in a flood zone – every single property. It’s just whether you are in a low risk area (B/C/X/X500) or a high risk flood zone (A/AE/V/VE). If you live in a high risk flood zone and you try to buy a house and you have a mortgage, you are required by the lender to carry flood insurance. If you live on the top of a mountain in a low risk flood zone, you can get a preferred rate flood policy at a discounted price because the likelihood of flooding is somewhat lesser than someone living on Gulf Boulevard.” With 24 years of expertise, when you call Ron Dennison Insurance,

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

you get the personal attention of a smaller agency. The phone is always answered by a highly experienced local licensed agent. Though licensed for all kinds of insurance, Ron Dennison Insurance primarily writes homeowner and flood insurance. “That’s our specialty,” Dennison said. “We are unlike a lot other insurance agencies, as we concentrate on home and flood insurance and work with a lot of real estate agents, mortgage lenders and brokers, and investors to provide the best quality service and best rates. We don’t want to get ourselves bogged down in time-consuming products like life insurance and auto insurance.” A graduate of University of Tampa, Dennison made a decision to go into the insurance business in 1992 after his industry of equipment financing and leasing began facing dramatic changes. He worked for Prudential Financial as a multi-line insurance agent. Dennison decided that during the 2004 real estate boom, it was the perfect time to branch out to open his own agency specializing in homeowners and flood insurance policies. “In the first 30 months of

Kids and Canines - An Assistance Dog Training Program Believing in kids and empowering them to take control of their lives, one dog at a time, Kids and Canines unites at-risk students and dogs in their unique program that is truly making a difference in Tampa Bay community. Located on the Dorothy Thomas campus in Tampa, Kids and Canines was originally founded in 1998 with a grant from the Justice Department. The sole purpose of this program initially was to help truancy students, founded upon the belief that giving these kids the responsibility of training and caring for a dog would help to keep them in school - and it worked! When the grant was not renewed, the program was continued as a part of the school program at Dorothy Thomas, and the success rates have been through the roof! “The program has grown significantly since its inception,” says Jo Deck, Chairman of the Board for Kids and Canines. “We are now a 501(c)(3) organization, which we felt was necessary in order to be able to significantly grow the program.” Kids and Canines is an elective that students at Dorothy Thomas School can apply for. Jo says, “This is a class and our textbook is the dog. There is an academic side, but the

18

JUNE 2016

most important things that we teach include how to not only show love towards a dog, but how to love yourself. Through this, the students learn how to properly deal with anger management and self esteem issues. The kids that we see have very serious behavioral issues; many have dropped out of school and have some sort of social problems or personality disorder. Most are referred to Dorothy Thomas by either the school counselor or their own personal child counselor.” Once a student gets accepted into the program, they sign a contract, which holds them accountable for taking care of the dogs. They are taught how to train the dogs, as well as how to groom, feed, and properly care for them. This encourages the kids to come to school, and gives them a reason to show up, because they know their dog needs them, and if they don’t come, their dog won’t get the necessary attention it deserves. In addition to the obvious benefits, this program gives these children so much more! It teaches them unconditional love and gives them self worth, helping them to build their self esteem and give them purpose in life. It teaches them the

importance and power of education. These dogs need the kids just as much as the kids need the dogs. “The program has been a huge success, and the bond between the children and the dogs has proven to be enough to keep these at-risk kids in school,” says Jo. Student Esme, is just one of their many success stories. Jo says, “When she first came to us, Esme had such bad self esteem that she didn’t come to school for over a year. Working with the dogs and the bond she formed helped her learn unconditional love. She also learned acceptance without judgement; the dogs relied on her on a daily basis; they needed her. Esme is now an ace groomer and teaches grooming to other students in the program. She has been in program for over three years and is going to Gaither High School next year. Her goal is to one day be a Vet assistant. And actually, she was recently adopted and both of her parents are teachers at the Dorothy Thomas School. This has given Esme stability, love and acceptance in ways she has never had before. Esme has done an amazing job of turning her life around!” Kids and Canines is helping to change the lives of these students;

and it doesn’t end there! Not only has their program helped the students by giving them accountability, companionship and purpose, but the dogs that they train go on to become service and therapy dogs for those Jo Deck, Chairman of the Board for Kids in need. “It is a winand Canines win situation,” says Jo. “This program not only benefits the kids, but it also benefits the person who gets the dog. The kids train the dogs with the hopes that their dog will go on and do even greater things in the community. Our dogs are trained to be service and therapy dogs and are placed with many different types of people, such as those suffering from Parkinson’s, MS, or younger children with Autism.” Since its inception, Kids and Canines has placed 86 dogs throughout Tampa Bay and surrounding communities!

Carrollwood Neighborhood Lifestyle

Volunteers Wanted! Due to their rapid growth over the past few years, Kids and Canines is constantly looking for volunteers. Their biggest need is for puppy sitters. Jo says, “Being a puppy sitter is such a wonderful experience. As a puppy sitter you would temporarily look after a dog when a puppy raiser has to go out of town. We are also looking for puppy raisers. A puppy raiser is someone who agrees to house the dog full time for 18-24 months as they are being trained. Everything is paid for food, vet bills, leashes etc. - and all you

have to do is be able to drop them off every morning before school and pick them up after. Essentially it’s just like dropping your dog at day-care.” Donations and Sponsorships Needed Kids and Canines is doing so many great things for the community, but in order for them to continue doing what they are doing, they rely on generous donations and sponsorships from caring individuals who want to help make a difference. There are many different ways in

Carrollwood Neighborhood Lifestyle

which you can help. The first is simply making a donation. That can be done on-line or by sending a donation directly to the program. There are different levels of giving that are outlined in their Sustainer Program, including a $5000 donation to sponsor and name a dog! You are able to follow the dog through its training and will receive reports as to the how your sponsored dog is doing, as well as progress pictures. With this, you have the ability to come visit the dog at any time. All donations made go to helping the at-risk children improve their lives. Jo says, “The current Board of Directors is a very active board and committed to the success of the Kids and Canines Program. They are focused on raising more funds and helping more at-risk students change their lives!” Kids and Canines is currently in desperate need of a van. Even having done a very successful fundraiser to raise funds for a new van, they have had difficulty finding the right van for the right price. Ideally, they need an 89 passenger van - preferably a Ford T150, or a van with specifications similar. If you can help or know someone who can help in this area, please call (813) 558-5406.

Local 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise owners Troy and Rachelle invested in GOTJUNK? more than a decade ago. Troy had worked in medical sales and Rachelle worked as a medical technologist, but the couple really wanted to own a business of their own and agreed that looking into franchising would be a smart place to start. Troy and Rachelle sat down and took an evaluation through a franchise placement company that ultimately led them to choose 1-800-GOT-JUNK? as

20

their future business endeavor. Troy says, “There was no other business like 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in the area. Rachelle and I became educated in junk removal services and marketing aspects of the business, which got us to the point we are at now.” Rachelle and Troy’s 1-800-GOTJUNK? business services all of Pasco, Northern Pinellas and Hillsborough with complete full-service junk removal, professional call services and free estimates with pricing based on the volume of junk being removed. “Our friendly professional haulers will handle almost any kind of junk as long as it is non-hazardous,” says Troy. “We pick up single items or can handle multiple truckloads of junk for commercial and residential clients. Our friendly, uniformed drivers will do all the lifting for you, clean up and haul your junk away. More than 60 percent of what we haul away is recycled or reused and our haulers will do the sorting for you to determine if something should go to the dump, local charities or recycle centers. We have even taken small boats, engine

blocks, sheds and docks. We can take away almost any material we can fit in our trucks, without you ever lifting a finger. We’ll remove junk from wherever it’s located and we won’t leave a dent or speck of dirt behind! And we are fully licensed and insured.” Simple and Easy! Getting rid of the things we don’t need can sometimes be an emotional rollercoaster. Many times we place

sentimental attachments on things that no longer serve a purpose in our lives. Most of the time, when it comes to excess stuff, we hold on to it “just in case.” If you aren’t sure about an item, ask yourself a few questions. Have I used this in the last six months? (Or, for some of us, in the last six years?) Am I keeping this out of obligation or expectation? Do I have more than one of these? Am I holding onto a broken item to fix one day? Is this item worth the time I spend cleaning it? Is this item worth the space it is taking up, and can I use this space for something better? If you find yourself answering no to many of these questions, it may be time to call 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. Troy says, “Our service is the most inexpensive way for you to gain space in your home or office. Most people find that they have an extra 100, 200 or even 500 square foot of space after they declutter and remove unwanted items.” Junk removal is as easy as making a phone call with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. Begin by making a call to Rachelle and Troy’s professional calling service and schedule a convenient pick up time. Customers are given a two-hour time window for the arrival of the trucks and will receive a phone call 15 to 30 minutes before the arrival of the truck. Once the guys are on-site with their

trucks they will give you an estimate, load up your unwanted goods into the truck and leave you with a less cluttered, more organized space. “All you have to do is point out to us what you don’t want anymore and we do the rest,” assures Troy. “From the sorting to the recycling to the hauling, we make sure your stuff ends up where it should, whether that is at a donation center for charity, the recycling center or repurposing center. We take care of it all, so you can focus on creating more space for you and family.” 1-800-GOT-JUNK? disposes of any non-hazardous materials and specializes in the removal of household junk items including appliances, mattresses, furniture, carpet, television sets, and tires. The company will remove office junk, offering computer, printer and monitor recycling. Not only does 1800-GOT-JUNK? remove unwanted home and office extras, the company can take care of construction debris, yard debris, and will remove disaster preparation materials. They also work with building contractors, property managers and real estate agents. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is environmentally conscious and recycles or donates everything they can when possible. Rachelle says, “We operate

out of a 4500square-foot warehouse where we sort and store items for recycling, donating and repurposing. “We recycle as much as we can. Sixty percent of the materials we remove are recycled or donated to Lighthouse Ministries, Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, and other charities and thrift stores.” One customer, Kelly, says, “Great service...right on time, safe and friendly driver/ haulers. We had a sleeper sofa to remove (that wasn’t in bad shape) but charities didn’t want it or it would take a while for an appointment. 1800-GOT-JUNK? was a better price than competitors and the best part of using this service is that they work to donate it to an organization that would like to have it. I would much rather it be reused than go to a landfill! I would recommend them!” Satisfied customer Josh says, “I had about half my garage stuffed with cardboard boxes and other miscellaneous junk. I also had some extremely heavy trashcans on the side that the garbage men wouldn’t take. Booked online, they came, grabbed everything and were done in about 30 minutes (last time I tried to clean out my garage and boxes and cut everything up it took me an entire day and I still wasn’t done). Fantastic service and they did a great job.” If you want to unburden yourself from unnecessary stuff, 1-800-GOTJUNK? literally lightens your load! Call 1-800-GOT-JUNK (1800-468-5865) to schedule a free estimate and/or pick-up or visit 1800gotjunk.com to book online or for additional information.

It’s All About Hair at Johana’s Beauty Salon By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Owner Johana Osorio and her employees follow the golden rule at Johana’s Beauty Salon, located at 4431 Gunn Highway – treat others as you would like to be treated. Soft music plays in the background and there are books abound for those who like to read while waiting to get their hair done. And there’s another bonus - “We offer really good coffee,” said Johana. Coming to Carrollwood with over 15 years of experience, Johana’s Beauty Salon recently opened its doors this past January. A native of Columbia, Osorio always had a passion for hair. She moved to Tampa at the age of 11 and studied beauty school while still in high school, a graduate at 16. She said, “I fell in love with the profession after being in college for two years. It’s not really a job, it’s a passion.” When asked why she went from working for a hair salon to the huge responsibility of opening her own salon, Osario was all about paying it forward. “I wanted to help other

stylists grow within our profession,” she said. Whether you seek a cut, color, smoothing treatments, or wax hair removal for face and body, Johana’s Beauty Salon has its clients covered. “It’s all about the hair,” she said. As a Redken salon, she said that besides using the best products available, the customer service received at Johana’s Beauty Salon

really separates them from all the local competition. “We want everyone to feel welcome and the environment is very calm,” she said. But that isn’t all. Johana always does a one-on-one consultation with each of her customers to determine their best look. “We don’t only offer our clients a good hairstyle, but we offer a hairstyle based on their skin tone, their pigment, their features, and

also on the shape of their face. We go by what we find out in the consultation and by seeing what is best for the client’s lifestyle. It’s very important – based on the face shape and the skin color – what type of haircut a person should get.” A basic haircut starts at $40 and a base color starts at $45. Johana said that she and her staff of stylists are always try to learn something new in reagrds to hair. “We are always taking new classes and keeping up-to-date with the very latest trends,” she said. Johana explained some of the current trends she is seeing in the women coming into her shop. she

Owner Johana Osorio explained, “Nowadays everyone wants the darker to the blonder hair coloring.” She is also seeing all ages seeking rainbow hues in their hair, like hot pinks, purples and blues. In trends for men, she is seeing men coming in sooner between haircuts to keep their appearance clean. “Men are taking care of their hair more than they used to and using more products. They come in every two to three weeks instead of three to four weeks,” said Johana. Johana’s Hair Salon offers

As a Redken salon, Johana’s Beauty Salon uses the best products available monthly specials, including their June special, where men can enjoy 50% off a haircut. Currently with three salon employees and five chairs, Johana is seeking a talented like-minded stylist to join their team and hopes in 5 years to have 3 locations throughout Tampa Bay. One of the biggest compliments a stylist can receive, Johana loves when

her clients trust her and say, “do what you want”. “It’s amazing,” she said. “Many of our clients come in and say you’re the professional.” They leave their image in Johana’s experienced hands. She added, “I give them that trust when they come in. There’s always a consultation. I take my time. I’m patient and I don’t rush. I don’t stand behind them. I’m always in front of them. I always ask what they

like and what don’t they like, so I have a better base to start from.” Much like an analyst, Johana pays close attention to the way her clients talk and the way they present themselves in order to find a haircut and/or color that matches their personality. “A lot depends on their personality and their attitude,” she said. She uses both Facebook and Instagram to promote the business and connect with customers and is currently working on a website for the new salon. Johana said that the most fun she’s ever had doing a haircut was “the next one I get to do.” To her, every single haircut is fun and something new. “The best haircut – the most fun - is always the next one.” Johana’s Beauty Salon is located at 4431 Gunn Hwy in Tampa. “City Paint” Continued from page 1 Rob Howard even partnered up on ownership of a Porter Paint shop in West Tampa for about 3yrs. It was through this time that they envisioned a new kind of painting company, a new place to focus their skills. Together they established a company where painters actually have an ownership interest in the company. This ensures that the painters have a vested interest in the company and this really shows in their work. The ownership interest vested in each painter is a unique business structure that is not duplicated by anyone else we know of in the Bay Area. An owner is on site at every job. The company doesn’t hire anyone without the proper experience necessary to do a high quality job. The lead painter, Rob Gunter (a third generation painter) along with Rob Howard and Joe Donato personally ensure that each painter brought on board meets the high quality ethical and work standards. Additionally, if they bring on a painter with the right ethical standards but not quite the high level of work standard required, they will train that person for up to 2 years. Types of work: Interior/exterior painting (residential and commercial) occupied or unoccupied, Garage floors, Pool Deck, Wood Deck Staining, Fencing, Pool deck coating, Pressure washing driveways and brick pavers. Often times with home improvements, clients want all the facets of a home renovation. This means, that although they are primarily a paint company they can do Interior finishes including (but not limited to, carpet, tile, wood cabinets and stone counter tops. City Paint Force does this through a partnership agreement with infinite HD where they share ownership. This of, course takes the stress of dealing with

28

Before City Paint Force (above) After City Paint Force (right) multiple contractors away from the home owner. Design consulting is provided by Rob and Joe when necessary. They have numerous lines of cabinetry available to select from as well as a 100% custom cabinet builder available along with an affiliation with a local family owned granite fabricator in the area that produce custom stone counter tops. Custom glass enclosures for bathroom remolding are also available through their friends at Holiga Glass. All repairs that are necessary for a quality paint job are included. For example if there are minor stucco cracks or windows that need caulk that is part of the job. On exterior paint jobs, naturally pressure washing is included in addition to any needed minor repairs. They make a point to see that all sealing of all cracks, settlement cracks and gaps on window frames are repaired and sealed. On the house that we visited in the photo on the cover, the paint was peeling from the previous paint job and the columns had to be repaired until smooth then sanded and smoothed again. The columns had to be painted several times. Even the mail box had to be re-stuccoed and repaired because it had cracked so badly, all before painting could begin. They even fixed a tree in the front yard that had fallen due to a bad storm. City does a good deal of work in Cheval, completing at least 35 jobs in this neighborhood alone in the last few years. City Paint Force will apply any

quality paint the homeowner requests. For exterior paint jobs City Paint Force recommends either Sherwin Williams “Loxon XP” or Lanco’s residential exterior paint called “Rain-Shield.” Lanco paints are the paints used at Universal and Walt Disney World. City Paint Force carries workers compensation for its employees and they carry liability insurance. Supporting documentation for insurance is provided at the initial consultation. This builds confidence and trust in City Paint Force even
