Navigate Your Way to Happiness with Help from Dr. Paula Nelson

Couples Counseling Dr. Paula’s counseling philosophy for couples is based on the research and work of Drs. John and Julie Gottman and their book The Seven Principals for Making a Marriage Work. “The Gottmans have spent 40 years researching what make relationships work. They have developed principles that help couples have a sound relationship. When couples come to me for therapy, I tell them that in order to repair and rebuild their rela-

tionship, they have to become friends again. Because all of the Gottmans’ exercises and principles are based on research, they offer concrete support and help for couples who want to build stronger, happier, healthier relationships.” Couples who come to Dr. Paula answer an extensive questionnaire. The report from the questionnaire helps Dr. Paula determine the areas where the couples need to focus. “It give us concrete, statistical results for where we need to focus our work,” says Dr. Paula. She goes on to explain that this type of research driven counseling is beneficial in the long-run to patients not only because it shows See “Dr. Paula Nelson” on page 22.

Odessa, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes Area

Community Calendar & News Briefs EFFECTIVELY MARKETING YOUR HOME FOR ALL IT’S WORTH Amani Warden, Real Estate Advisor with RE/MAX Capital Realty in Lutz has 19 years of Real Estate experience. She’s a full time Realtor with a support team including three other licensed Realtors servicing Land O’ Lakes, Lutz, Odessa and neighboring areas. For Amani, the successful marketing of a home is a multi-faceted process that encompasses home preparation, pricing, presentation/staging, negotiation, and strategic advertising and networking. Amani shares “When I list a home, I work with a professional stager and a professional photographer to capture all the positive attributes of the home. Also highlighting the neighborhood and its amenities.” All these activities are undertaken with one aim: To maximize your home’s market exposure, and with it the number of showings and offers

4

you get so that you ultimately sell for top market value. Amani has the knowledge, expertise and resources to implement a plan that will effectively coordinate all of these activities so you do just that. In order to maximize the impact of these preparation and pricing strategies, your home needs to be effectively exposed to the marketplace through a variety of advertising media. Amani utilizes the internet including virtual tours and interactive maps on RE/MAX.com, Zillow.com, Trulia.com, REALTOR.com, social media, and direct contact with other REALTORS® which is the main sources of home information for buyers. Other sources used by Amani are yard signs, open houses, newspaper and real estate magazine ads, and television. An interesting phenomenon is the yard sign’s role. Buyers who call on a yard sign already have convinced themselves that they like the neighborhood, street – even your front yard.

Mangrove Bay Dentistry Expands Due to Referrals from Happy Patients! By Marcy Sanford Mangrove Bay Dentistry opened in Oldsmar in 2010 and has earned a stellar reputation in the community for the patient focused, personalized family and cosmetic dental care provided to patients of all ages. Located at 13998 W. Hillsborough Avenue, at the corner of Race Track Road, Mangrove Bay Dentistry is convenient not only to the nearby neighborhoods in Oldsmar, but also to the neighboring communities of East Lake, Safety Harbor, Waterchase, Tarpon Springs, Lutz, Odessa, Twin Branch Acre and Westchase. Neighbors and friends talk, and word has spread about how much patients love Dr. Toan Tran and the TEAM at Mangrove Bay Dentistry. In fact, due to the many referrals from happy patients, Dr. Tran recently doubled the size of Mangrove Bay Dentistry’s original office space to accommodate the growing number of patients and their families. “Thanks to our patients’ support and referrals, we continue to grow and

14

hear from more new patients,” said Dr. Tran. “With our expansion we will double our current space and will have two experienced full time hygienists. This will allow us to accommodate our patients’ needs and schedules.” Patient Focused Care Dr. Toan Tran and his TEAM at Mangrove Bay Dentistry focus on customer service. “We customize our treatments to meet each patient’s individual needs and concerns,” said Dr. Tran. “We want to make sure our patients are educated about all of their options and that they are making the best choice for their dental wellbeing.” When at work, Dr. Tran is focused on each patient and giving them the best experience possible. He is approachable and a family man who loves spending his free time with his wife and three kids enjoying fishing, diving and all things Florida – including a love for the Florida Gators! Florida has always been home to Dr. Tran, who grew up in Orlando. He earned his Bachelor of

Science from the University of Florida, and in 2001, received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Dedicated to offering his patients the full spectrum of dental care from family dentistry to cosmetic dentistry and full restorations, Dr. Tran has undergone additional trainings from some of the nation’s foremost professionals, not limited in endodontics (root canal therapy), aesthetics (cosmetic dentistry), dental implant restoration, and orthodontics with ClearCorrect™ clear aligner therapy. Mangrove Bay Dentistry patient Michelle L. shared, “I went to Dr. Tran for the first time last week and it was the best experience I have had at a dental office. He spent more time with me explaining everything thoroughly and really showed more care than any other dentist that I have been to in this area and elsewhere. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly, very caring in nature. I would highly recommend Mangrove Bay Dentistry

dental anxiety. “I had one patient who became so anxious that he left the appointment and stood outside in the parking lot,” said Dr. Tran. “I went outside and talked to him to explain the procedure again and help calm him down until he felt comfortable enough to come back into the office. Sometimes, if someone had a bad experience at the dentist as a child or at another time, it can cause them to have extreme anxiety. We want to make sure that these patients can still receive the quality care they deserve.” For patients with severe anxiety, Mangrove Bay Dentistry offers nitrous oxide (laughing gas) in combination with a local anesthetic. This helps reduce any pain and/or anxiety. In fact, many patients report a feeling of wellbeing during this type of procedure. All bodily functions remain normal during the administration of nitrous oxide and its effects wear off quickly afterwards, within a couple of minutes. Dr. Tran’s patient Heather C. said, “I had been searching for a dentist who is friendly and personable. I had negative experiences in the past and I had been avoiding having work done on my teeth. Dr. Tran is wonderful and the procedure was painless. I have found my new dentist.”

Creating Good Dental Hygiene Habits for Life Dr. Tran understands that many adults’ dental anxiety stems from unpleasant dental visits they experienced as a child, therefore, he and all of his staff have created a fun environment where children not only enjoy coming to the dentist but look forward to coming back. “We want kids to have a good impression of the dentist. We want to teach them good habits so that they will be able to keep their teeth healthy their entire life.” Mangrove Bay Dentistry sees children as young as one year old. Dr. Tran has special training in sports dentistry, and is skilled at restoring teeth from injuries such as chipped or knocked out teeth. One of the best ways to prevent your child from injuring his or her teeth while playing sports is to have them wear a mouth guard. There are several types of mouth guards to choose from and Dr. Tran can help you choose the best one for your child’s particular needs; for all contact and non-contact sports. Up-To-Date Technology & Old Fashion Values “There are always new technology

and updates in dentistry,” says Dr. Tran. “At Mangrove Bay Dentistry we make sure we have state-of-the-art technology and equipment and trained in the latest advanced procedures, but remain steadfast in our focus of customer service. We want our patients to not only enjoy being here, but also to want to come visit us. One of my favorite parts of being a dentist is the relationships I’ve built with my patients and their families.” Mangrove Bay Dentistry’s services include everything from regular checkups and cleanings to dental implant restorations. Mangrove Bay Dentistry also provides services and repairs for full and partial dentures, as well as cosmetic dentistry in porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, ClearCorrect™ (clear braces) aligner therapy, and restorative dentistry with metal-free composite bonding and fillings, root canals, extractions, crowns and bridges, and more. Many times we place sentimental attachments on things that no longer serve a purpose in our lives. Most of the time, when it comes to excess stuff, we hold on to it “just in case.” If you aren’t sure about an item, ask yourself a few questions. Have I used this in the last six months? (Or, for some of us, in the last six years?) Am I keeping this out of obligation or expectation? Do I have more than one of these? Am I holding onto a broken item to fix one day? Is this item worth the time I spend cleaning it? Is this item worth the space it is taking up, and can I use this space for something better? If you find yourself answering no to many of these questions, it may be time to call 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. Troy says, “Our service is the most inexpensive way for you to gain space in your home or office. Most people find that they have an extra 100, 200 or even 500 square foot of space after they declutter and remove unwanted items.”

Junk removal is as easy as making a phone call with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. Begin by making a call to Rachelle and Troy’s professional calling service and schedule a convenient pick up time. Customers are given a two-hour time window for the arrival of the trucks and will receive a phone call 15 to 30 minutes before the arrival of the truck. Once the guys are on-site with their trucks they will give you an estimate, load up your unwanted goods into the truck and leave you with a less cluttered, more organized space. “All you have to do is point out to us what you don’t want anymore and we do the rest,” assures Troy. “From the sorting to the recycling to the hauling, we make sure your stuff ends up

where it should, whether that is at a donation center for charity, the recycling center or repurposing center. We take care of it all, so you can focus on creating more space for you and family.” 1-800-GOT-JUNK? disposes of any non-hazardous materials and specializes in the removal of household junk items including appliances, mattresses, furniture, carpet, television sets, and tires. The company will remove office junk, offering computer, printer and monitor recycling. Not only does 1-800-GOT-JUNK? remove unwanted home and office extras, the company can take care of construction debris, yard debris, and will remove disaster preparation materials. They also work

with building contractors, property managers and real estate agents. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is environmentally conscious and recycles or donates everything they can when possible. Rachelle says, “We operate out of a 4500-square-foot warehouse where we sort and store items for recycling, donating and repurposing. “We recycle as much as we can. Sixty percent of the materials we remove are recycled or donated to Lighthouse Ministries, Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, and other charities and thrift stores.” One customer, Kelly, says, “Great service...right on time, safe and friendly driver/ haulers. We had a sleeper sofa to remove (that wasn’t in bad shape) but charities didn’t want it or it would take a while for an appointment. 1800-GOT-JUNK? was a better price than competitors and the best part of using this service is that they work to donate it to an organization that would like to have it. I would much rather it be reused than go to a landfill! I would recommend them!” Satisfied customer Josh says, “I had about half my garage stuffed with cardboard boxes and other miscellaneous junk. I also had some extremely heavy trashcans on the side that the

garbage men wouldn’t take. Booked online, they came, grabbed everything and were done in about 30 minutes (last time I tried to clean out my garage and boxes and cut everything up it took me an entire day and I still wasn’t done). Fantastic service and they did a great job.” If you want to unburden yourself from unnecessary stuff, 1-800-GOTJUNK? literally lightens your load! Bringing Home Baby Workshop Having a child can be one of the most joyful, and stressful, times in a

couple’s life. Even the strongest relationships are strained during the transition to parenthood. Lack of sleep, new roles and responsibilities and lots of new bills can lead to a great deal of stress and a decline in marital satisfaction – all of which affect baby’s care and development. Additionally, because your attention is focused on the new baby, one or both parents can begin to feel left out and unhappy. Dr. Paula offers workshops for new and expectant parents as well as those who are adopting. “People who complete the workshops report that their babies cry less, smile more, and develop language earlier.

Babies can pick up on parents’ stress and will react to it.” Dr. Paula can help you and your spouse: - Strengthen your relationship - Effectively manage stress and conflict - Recognize and respond to postpartum depression, anxiety, and adjustment issues - Meet the emotional and psychological needs of a child - Keep both of you involved in parenting Dr. Paula says, “It is wonderful to be able to help parents reconnect during this time of their lives.”

Kids and Canines - An Assistance Dog Training Program Believing in kids and empowering them to take control of their lives, one dog at a time, Kids and Canines unites at-risk students and dogs in their unique program that is truly making a difference in Tampa Bay community. Located on the Dorothy Thomas campus in Tampa, Kids and Canines was originally founded in 1998 with a grant from the Justice Department. The sole purpose of this program initially was to help truancy students, founded upon the belief that giving these kids the responsibility of training and caring for a dog would help to keep them in school - and it worked! When the grant was not renewed, the program was continued as a part of the school program at Dorothy Thomas, and the success rates have been through the roof! “The program has grown significantly since its inception,” says Jo Deck, Chairman of the Board for Kids and Canines. “We are now a 501(c)(3) organization, which we felt was necessary in order to be able to significantly grow the program.” Kids and Canines is an elective that students at Dorothy Thomas School can apply for. Jo says, “This is a class and our textbook is the dog. There is an academic side, but the

28

most important things that we teach include how to not only show love towards a dog, but how to love yourself. Through this, the students learn how to properly deal with anger management and self esteem issues. The kids that we see have very serious behavioral issues; many have dropped out of school and have some sort of social problems or personality disorder. Most are referred to Dorothy Thomas by either the school counselor or their own personal child counselor.” Once a student gets accepted into the program, they sign a contract, which holds them accountable for taking care of the dogs. They are taught how to train the dogs, as well as how to groom, feed, and properly care for them. This encourages the kids to come to school, and gives them a reason to show up, because they know their dog needs them, and if they don’t come, their dog won’t get the necessary attention it deserves. In addition to the obvious benefits, this program gives these children so much more! It teaches them unconditional love and gives them self worth, helping them to build their self esteem and give them purpose in life. It teaches them the

importance and power of education. These dogs need the kids just as much as the kids need the dogs. “The program has been a huge success, and the bond between the children and the dogs has proven to be enough to keep these at-risk kids in school,” says Jo. Student Esme, is just one of their many success stories. Jo says, “When she first came to us, Esme had such bad self esteem that she didn’t come to school for over a year. Working with the dogs and the bond she formed helped her learn unconditional love. She also learned acceptance without judgement; the dogs relied on her on a daily basis; they needed her. Esme is now an ace groomer and teaches grooming to other students in the program. She has been in program for over three years and is going to Gaither High School next year. Her goal is to one day be a Vet assistant. And actually, she was recently adopted and both of her parents are teachers at the Dorothy Thomas School. This has given Esme stability, love and acceptance in ways she has never had before. Esme has done an amazing job of turning her life around!” Kids and Canines is helping to change the lives of these students;

JUNE 2016

and it doesn’t end there! Not only has their program helped the students by giving them accountability, companionship and purpose, but the dogs that they train go on to become service and therapy dogs for those Jo Deck, Chairman in need. of the Board for Kids “It is a and Canines win-win situation,” says Jo. “This program not only benefits the kids, but it also benefits the person who gets the dog. The kids train the dogs with the hopes that their dog will go on and do even greater things in the community. Our dogs are trained to be service and therapy dogs and are placed with many different types of people, such as those suffering from Parkinson’s, MS, or younger children with Autism.” Since its inception, Kids and Canines has placed 86 dogs throughout Tampa Bay and surrounding communities!

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Volunteers Wanted! Due to their rapid growth over the past few years, Kids and Canines is constantly looking for volunteers. Their biggest need is for puppy sitters. Jo says, “Being a puppy sitter is such a wonderful experience. As a puppy sitter you would temporarily look after a dog when a puppy raiser has to go out of town. We are also looking for puppy raisers. A puppy raiser is someone who agrees to house the dog full time for 18-24 months as they are being trained. Everything is paid for food, vet bills, leashes etc. - and all you have to do is be able to drop them off

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

every morning before school and pick them up after. Essentially it’s just like dropping your dog at day-care.” Donations and Sponsorships Needed Kids and Canines is doing so many great things for the community, but in order for them to continue doing what they are doing, they rely on generous donations and sponsorships from caring individuals who want to help make a difference. There are many different ways in which you can help. The first is simply making a donation. That can be done

on-line or by sending a donation directly to the program. There are different levels of giving that are outlined in their Sustainer Program, including a $5000 donation to sponsor and name a dog! You are able to follow the dog through its training and will receive reports as to the how your sponsored dog is doing, as well as progress pictures. With this, you have the ability to come visit the dog at any time. All donations made go to helping the at-risk children improve their lives. Jo says, “The current Board of Directors is a very active board and committed to the success of the Kids and Canines Program. They are focused on raising more funds and helping more at-risk students change their lives!” Kids and Canines is currently in desperate need of a van. Even having done a very successful fundraiser to raise funds for a new van, they have had difficulty finding the right van for the right price. Ideally, they need an 89 passenger van - preferably a Ford T150, or a van with specifications similar. If you can help or know someone who can help in this area, please call (813) 558-5406. Kids and Canines Summer

Camp Program June 21st, 27th, July 11, and July 18th Every summer Kids and Canines hosts a summer camp, providing them the opportunity to offer their services and training programs to the community. This program is completely open to the public and is for anyone, ages 10-16, who wants to learn how to properly care for a dog, including grooming, basic training skills, and arts and crafts activities that are dog related. The camp is held weekly, Mon. - Thurs. 9:30 a.m. 2:30 p.m. and is $225 per week; due to limited availability and high demand, campers can choose to enroll in a maximum of 2 of the 4 weeks. Week two is full; but all other weeks still have openings. For more information or to enroll, please call the office at (813) 558-5406. “Our primary focus is to change the lives of at-risk children,” says Jo. “We turn around lives every day. Our mission is: Believing In Kids * Empowering Lives * One Dog At A Time!” For more information about Kids and Canines please call (813) 558-5406, visit KidsandCanines.org or find them on Facebook.
