GETTING READY FOR THE SAT, ACT, AND BRIGHT FUTURES By Dr. Wayne Adams, Former Dean and Full Professor of a Graduate School of Business Dr. Wayne Adams has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, and Vanderbilt. He is one of the leading tutors in the country. Fewer subjects are closer to parents’ hearts than finding the best college education for their students at an affordable price. The Bright Futures program has been especially helpful. Unfortunately, the major increases in SAT and ACT score qualification requirements for Bright Futures this year will eliminate about 60% to 70% of applicants in 2013-2014 who would have been eligible last year. In addition, SAT and ACT scores are more critical today for college admission and for academic, athletic, music, and other scholarships. What are these standardized, national examinations? The SAT consists of Writing (Essay and Grammar), Reading, and Mathematics, with a maximum composite score of 2400. The ACT core consists of English (Grammar), Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with a maximum composite score of 36. Each exam is given multiple times in fall and in spring. Some key observations! Having tutored high school students for five years across the country with thousands of hours of face-to-face experience including general students and all types of athletes: Most students are poorly prepared for these examinations, especially in the areas of essays, grammar, critical thinking so vital in reading, advanced techniques

8

for math, and overall test strategy. As one example, when I ensure students know all the vocabulary words in an SAT Reading section before starting, their correct answers jump around 50%! Reading the long passage sections on each exam before looking at the questions is, for most students, a waste of time. Time is not your friend on these exams. If you know how to approach the math, it can be greatly simplified. For example, recently I tutored a 7th grader who had not had algebra or geometry, and he scored almost 600 on the math section of the actual exam. His composite on the actual SAT Exam for Writing, Reading, and Math was 1780, a 500 point gain from his baseline.

Current teaching techniques are ineffective. For example, how can a teacher really know what an individual student needs without baseline testing, identifying the areas to be strengthened, and shaping each program around what each student needs for their maximum improvement? Students do not learn by listening; students learn by doing under expert guidance for individual learning styles. Students need to prepare early to do their best on these exams. I often tutor freshmen, sophomores, and juniors as they prepare for the big exam. And with the SAT, you can use the highest scores, present the composite to a college, and they will not know these scores came from different exams. On the ACT, you can miss a question without penalty, so guess at them all. Do not do this on the SAT. About Dr. Adams: His students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, UF, FSU, USF,

UCF, USC, UCLA, LSU, Ohio State, U Kansas, Boston College, Northeastern, Music Conservatories, and many other outstanding universities, often with academic, athletic, and music/performance scholarships. Vallarta’s Restaurante Mexicano

A Local Favorite for Authentic Mexican Fare By Marcy Sanford Vallarta’s Restaurante Mexicano located on State Road 54 in the Northpointe Village is a festive restaurant with great food and drinks at a great price. Vallarta’s started in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1972 under the name “El Toro” Mexican Restaurant. As the years passed the employees of El Toro decided that the food was too good to keep locally and decided to branch out and open new locations in states across the southeast including Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. Vallarta’s Mexican Restaurant opened its first Tampa location in Temple Terrace in 1989 and has since grown to five locations throughout the Tampa area. Locally owned and operated, the Lutz Vallarta’s location has been a favorite of residents in the area since it first opened. One taste of their fresh,

10

scrumptious salsa and crispy, salty tortilla chips and it’s easy to see why they’ve been voted “Best of Pasco” in a restaurant poll.

Great Food

Vallarta’s uses only the freshest ingredients to make their Mexican specialties like Molcajete – a delicious combination of steak, chicken, and shrimp. Molcajete is cooked with onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and squash and layered with Vallarta’s famous cheese and ranchero sauce. Another favorite is Carne Asada - tender grilled steak seasoned with Vallarta’s special blend of south of the border spices. No matter what you’re in the mood for, Vallarta’s has a great selection of Mexican specialties and classics. In addition to specialty dinners Vallarta’s has all of your traditional favorites including quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, tostadas, tacos,

and more. And the best part is all the delicious dishes are available in a wide variety of combinations. There is truly something for everyone in your party with plenty of pork, steak, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian dishes to choose from. One of my favorites is their yummy grilled quesadillas filled with melted cheese and juicy shrimp, but you can also choose to get succulent steak tips, flavorful mushrooms and roasted tomatoes, tender chicken or choose a combination of several delicious fillings. Another favorite at Vallarta’s is their tacos prepared with your favorite fillings including the tantalizing chicken and bacon tacos.

Complete Tile Joint Cleaning and Color Restoration By Katie Thomas For many, our homes are our greatest investments and we take pride in caring for and maintaining our sanctuaries. I love walking into my own home when it is clean and looking its best, so I can let out a big sigh, “I’m home.” Sometimes elbow grease just isn’t enough and it’s time to call a professional to keep your home looking fantastic, clean and aesthetically appealing; Grout Busters is your go-to pro if you want to make your tile floors look like new again. Grout Busters, a Tampa based

12

business, is family owned and operated by David Smith and his son Travis Smith. David opened Grout Busters in 1992, as the first business of its kind in Florida. David says, “In the early 1990s, I decided to take a chance and do something different. I thought of grout restoration. There were a lot of homes at the time that had tile, but no businesses at the time that could clean and restore grout.” As a pioneer in tile joint cleaning and color restoration, David has expert knowledge on what works best and what products and sources are no good. Grout Busters started with a great product and has mastered the

craft of complete cleaning, color restoration and protection of grout/tile in residential or commercial buildings. Celebrating 20 years in business, Grout Busters has gained quality experience that has allowed for business expansion and growth. With over eight operative offices in the Southeast, Grout Busters is A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau and offers customers solid, reliable work that always has a fantastic end result. David says, “We stand behind everything that we do. Our longevity in this business

is a testament to our work ethic. We are proud that we have satisfied thousands of customers and we plan on keeping it up for years to come.” With a goal to always satisfy customers and provide the best service with high-end product that works, Grout Busters keeps happy customers. Kathryn Robertson hired Grout Busters to seal the grout in all the main areas of her home in 2004. She says, “The work that Grout Busters did has lasted all this time. They came into our new home and matched the color of the grout perfectly to what we had installed. If someone spills something, it cleans right up and does not stain the grout. The grout has stayed clean and still looks brand new. I have recommended them to my parents and other people because they did a great job and because the floor has looked great for so long.” Grout Facts and Cleaning Techniques Grout Busters focuses on getting your floors looking back to new and protecting them for years to come.

Since grout is a porous substance it is subject to staining by mop water, spills and other contaminants that can happen on an everyday basis. The Grout Buster system for cleaning and sealing will protect your grout from staining and have you amazed at the beautiful end result. When working with new tile floors, Grout Busters recommends applying the Grout Buster system sealant three weeks after tile/grout installation, providing your floors with the benefits of beauty and durability. When cleaning and adding a sealant solution to an existing home that needs a boost in looks and cleanliness, Grout Busters utilizes their reliable color-pigmented, water-born epoxy grout sealant. This sealant is chemically engineered to penetrate and form a high strength bond to non-sanded, sanded and epoxy tile grout. Grout Busters has a color pallet in 44 standard color choices and has the means to match all of the grout industry’s leading grout manufacturers’ color offerings. Many grout cleaning businesses use steam cleaning to work on grout, but the Tile and Stone Association of America reports that steam can be far too aggressive and cause damage to tile and grout – the chemicals used for steam cleaning are harsh and can modify the color of your grout. “We do things the old-fashioned way, the way we always have. We first clean everything on our hands and knees, getting into the corners and scarifying (sanding) stains. Steam cleaning does not get into the hard to reach places and because they do not use the sealant we use, it will just get dirty again after a couple months,” says David. “Our grout sealer has a tint that matches the original color of your grout and protects the grout underneath. The process is all done by hand to ensure that it is done right.” David adds, “Our sealer is the best and strongest that the tile industry has to offer.” The sealant Grout Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Busters uses locks out odors and stains from penetrating into the porous surface, which reduces your overall maintenance time spent cleaning your floor and allows for a beautiful, fresh new look that will brighten your home. David and Travis take pride in their business and consider themselves experts in grout cleaning, whether residential/commercial flooring or bathrooms; the Smiths have got your grout locked in. Offering single-item service allows Grout Busters to offer the best quality service imaginable. Dan Beltram has had many of his homes serviced by Grout Busters and he says, “I’ve used Grout Busters over five times and I would not think of using another company. When I buy new houses, the first thing I do is have David come over and seal the grout before we begin any work, this way I know my flooring is completely protected. I have been so pleased with his work that I have flown him to Montana and Georgia to work on my houses there. The flooring always looks better than new and every time I see the finished product I am shocked, WOW!” Grout Busters offers free estimates and is licensed and insured. Florida Wellness & Rehab Combines Family Medical Care & Chiropractic Care! By Julie Kanehl Many people run from one doctor’s appointment to the next, seeing one physician for a sore throat, and say, a chiropractor for their back. At Florida Wellness & Rehab, patients get the best of both worlds, which can be especially helpful when you know that these experienced doctors really enjoy putting their heads together and putting their patients first. One of the things they are most proud of is their unique approach to medicine, “combining skill and expertise that spans the entire wellness spectrum.” Florida Wellness & Rehab’s Trinity office is located at 1820 Wellness Lane in Building 4 of the Trinity Professional Center, which is at the corner of Little Road and Mitchell Boulevard. Now offering two other locations, one in downtown Tampa on Franklin Street, and the other in Zephyrhills, Florida Wellness & Rehab is popular with patients be-

16

cause they can be treated both medically and holistically all in one place. The Florida Wellness & Rehab Center is a group of physicians from all walks of medical life who can now offer patients a range of services including family medicine, chiropractic medicine, medical acupuncture, massage therapy and physical therapy. The wellness approach is a holistic approach to medicine that is gaining popularity with people all over the world who are tired of treating everything with medication when the side effects can be as bad as the problem. A wellness approach is different because its aim is to treat the whole person from the inside out, first holistically and then medically where necessary, keeping in mind the whole body. For example, a migraine is often treated with medicine, but chiropractic care and acupuncture can help patients who suffer from migraines, even severe bouts of it, without the need for any medication at all. Another example is that while a

who focus on wellness care look deeper and help patients actually help themselves! Stephen Unger, D.C. is a prominent chiropractor in the area, and he has always had a passion for fusing family medicine with chiropractic wellness and care. Dr. Unger previously had a Chiropractic Center off of Duck Slough called Unger Chiropractic, where he and experienced Chiropractor, Brandon Delle Chiaie, D.C., took a holistic and individualized approach to Chiropractic Care with their patients. Now, at The Florida Wellness & Rehab Center, Drs. Unger and Della Chiaie have joined with two other Chiropractors, Edward Leonard, D.C. and Holly M. Ridge, D.C., as well as family care physicians Carol Browne, D.O, and Tanya Gold, M.D. Spanning the three locations, these doctors are able to help their patients from one end of the spectrum to the other, and consult with each other whenever necessary. Dr. Unger says, “We now have Chiropractic care, Physical Therapy and a family medical practice all in one.” Dr. Carol S. Browne has an extensive resume and background as a

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

physician and academic physician, teaching other osteopathic doctors her techniques. Offering full service primary care, Dr. Browne can help patients with everything from the common cold to long-term medical conditions. She says, “Our philosophy is to provide quality care that is patient-centered. We see our patients as individuals.” Florida Wellness & Rehab is a state-of-the-art facility that has “inhouse” technology like x-rays, laboratories, physical therapy rooms and even diagnostic ultrasound. Together with their three Licensed Massage Therapists, Susan Lyons, Kasse Hays and Sean Gill, this entire group of professionals treats each patient with the goal of improving your health all around, fusing nutrition, wellness, spine alignment and medical care to help you be the most healthy YOU possible. Why Florida Wellness & Rehab Works for Patients Sometimes people say, “I don’t need a chiropractor, I haven’t been in a car accident!” While it’s true that Chiropractic Care is proven to be highly effective in treating those of us who have been in a car accident,

chiropractic care is a whole lot more than a snap and a pop fix. Chiropractic Care is the second largest primary health care profession in the United States, and it’s growing because more and more patients are beginning to appreciate the balance and harmony that comes with being a patient. From jaw pain and neck pain to knee pain, sciatica, scoliosis, headaches and injuries caused by everything from sports to general aging, an experienced Chiropractor can truly change your life. That said, sometimes after an injury, it may take a group of doctors to diagnose you. After my car accident, I went to a lot of different doctors, and none of them seemed to know what the other one was doing for a while. Patients who come to Florida Wellness & Rehab can avoid that problem altogether. Dr. Unger says, “Sometimes I see a patient who has come to me right after a car accident, and I can tell right away that they need to see a medical doctor. When this happens, it’s nice to be able to just let them know that they have to see Dr. Browne, and that we will be able to continue their care together as a team.” He adds, “Recently, while I

was working with a patient, I found that his blood pressure was extremely high and I was able to get him to Dr. Browne right away. In this way, we are able to give our patients the best possible care without having to send them back out into the world with more questions.” The best part, in my own opinion, about Florida Wellness & Rehab is that they don’t just give you a prescription and send you out the door, these physicians walk you through physical therapy; they adjust your neck, your back, your body. Their hands-on approach is personal and effective, and it makes a world of difference. Dr. Browne says, “Our philosophy is to be a cultural authority for evidence-based alternative care.” Florida Wellness and Rehab’s Trinity office is located at 1820 Wellness Lane in Building 4 of the Trinity Professional Center. The facility is open Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Florida Wellness & Rehab also has offices in Tampa and Zephyrhills. ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day & Public Policy Conference By Alexis Selby This past month nearly 2,000 people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, family, friends and other advocates, including Cheval resident Gary Dassatti, gathered in Washington, D.C. during ALS Awareness Month for The ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. While in Washington Gary, among with other ALS advocates, met with aides in 4 Congressmen's offices (Representatives Hastings, Rooney, Posey and Bilirakis) as well as with aides for Senator Nelson and Senator Rubio. Gary says, “We were basically seeing if they were aware of what ALS is and asked for continued monetary support from the House and Senate for the ALS Registry (where data is entered by current living pALS (people suffering with ALS) to try to help find a commonality so that a cause may be found. Currently we have no idea what causes ALS, only that Military per-

18

sonnel are twice as likely to contract this horrible disease. We were also asking for continued monetary support for the ALS Research Program at the Department of Defense; this is very necessary, especially with the Military connection to ALS.” Another individual who attended the conference’s Rally Dinner was Baltimore Raven O.J, Brigance, who has been living with ALS since May 2007 and has been a leading voice in the fight against the disease. It’s Brigance’s first time attending the conference, and it’s the first time they are having a rally to open the festivities. Former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason, who, like Brigance, is also battling ALS, joined via Skype. The ALS Association hosted this three-day conference in order to empower individuals from across the country with the tools to advocate for policies specifically designed to accelerate the development of treatments for ALS. “During the 3 days, we heard

Cheval resident Gary Dassatti (far right) with ALS FL Chapter Board Member Warren Nelson and Senator Bill Nelson’s aide Kerry Allen. speeches from prominent Scientists and Research Doctors on various issues regarding our cause,” says Gary. “We don't know any more now than

FL Chapter of ALS is to help with patient care.” O.J., who served as one of the keynote speakers during the dinner, addressed the conference’s attendees and discussed the transformative roles of adversity and resiliency for those battling this disease. Using his computer generated voice he said, “We possess an eternal flame that will burn brightly until we see a cure for ALS realized.” The Ravens’ senior advisor to player development also shared his story at the opening of the 2013 National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. “The fight against ALS has existed for over a hundred years with no cure,” says Brigance. “There is a need for greater awareness, along with funding for research and patient services. My encouragement will remind us of the root of resiliency, which permeates our cause. We will not stop until we find a cure.” While there are many causes to support, Brigance feels ALS is often overlooked when compared to cancer and other more well-known afflictions. Brigance recently visited the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Boston to tour their facilities and

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

was “excited by the prospects on the horizon.” But a cure can’t be found fast enough in his eyes, he said. He is hoping funding and procedures can be fast-tracked. “My hope is Congress will recognize the devastation of ALS and will champion our cause,” says Brigance. “There are countless researchers looking to unlock the mysteries of ALS. Unfortunately, people are dying in the prime of their lives because the answer isn’t coming quick enough.” Kim Hanna, President and CEO of the ALS Association Florida Chapter, says, “Only through your efforts can we help to achieve O.J.’s and our vision – a world without ALS.” To become an ALS Advocate so that you can lend your voice to help increase government funding for ALS research and advance policies that will impact everyone touched by this horrific disease please visit their website at WebFl.alsa.org. ALS advocates are critical to ensuring that lawmakers understand the urgency of finding treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig's Disease!

Entrepreneurial Style – Four Stylists Find Their Place at Salon Lofts Stylists Photos by lilfrecklefacephotography.com When I visited Salon Lofts on Tampa Road in Oldsmar to meet four stylists who are opening up their own Lofts there, I was very impressed with the swanky feel of the space – as if you’ve steeped off a side street in Manhattan to a quiet, upscale salon and spa. The four ambitious, young stylists that I spoke with – Katy Yeager, Melissa McGrade, Cicely McKee and Heather Winder – were attracted not just by the great décor and premium products offered at Salon Lofts; they also loved the way the company encourages entrepreneurship by providing them with a range of online tools and a personalized marketing platform where they can grow their own business, and easily manage their schedules online where it is a breeze for clients to log on and set an appointment. Katy Yeager – in Loft 2 – is an Aveda Institute graduate and has been doing hair in the area for eight years. Katy continued on with her education after

graduation from cosmetology school is certified to teach in-salon training. “I love the concept of Salon Lofts,” says Katy. “Changing into this atmosphere has made every one of us happier. It has reignited our passion.” Katy is passionate about both cuts and color, and many of her clients come to her for her great blonde highlights. With far more than 14,000 hours behind the chair, Katy pays incredible attention to detail, and is dedicated to providing a standard of service that is unrivaled starting with a detailed consultation to cater to each guest’s specific needs. Katy treats clients to a scalp massage and a hot towel treatment. “There would be no greater compliment than the opportunity to service you and gain your trust as your hair specialist.” - Katy Yeager Heather Winder – Loft 4 – has worked in the salon business for 14 years. “I’ve spent my whole career at Aveda,” says Heather. “This is my first big move

but I wanted to create a more personable space for my clients.” The Salon Lofts ambiance is perfect for Heather and her clients, with its beautifully appointed loft space, personalized by Heather and her friend and fellow Loft buddy, Cicely McKee. “I love being able to have my own business without tons of overhead. Salon Lofts provides a lot of support for us.” Heather loves making her clients’ locks shine with beauty and is very passionate about natural-looking color and classic style. Cicely McKee – Loft 4 – has been a hairstylist with Aveda for 17 years. Cicely started doing hair in high school and went to Dunedin High School’s cosmetology program before attending the Aveda Institute. “I love my coworkers,” says Cicely, who shares Loft 4 with stylist Heather Winder. “We are excited to be independent stylists and small business owners.” Salon Lofts allows each stylist to use their favorite product line. Cicely uses Davines, and says, “It

is a great product line and I love that it is an all-women company.” Cicely loves doing both cuts and color and particularly loves doing color with foil. “My goal is to provide a professional and friendly environment for my clientele,” says Cicely. “It is extremely important to me that every guest is relaxed and comfortable. I love my career and trying new things.” Melissa McGrade – Loft 3 – is also an Aveda Institute trained hairstylist. “I have been in the hair industry for 12 successful years,” says Melissa. “I found my passion for hair up in Michigan where I attended and graduated from the Aveda Institute. I enjoy my craft and creativity when it comes to enhancing a person overall color and style. Cutting comes naturally to me and I love both cuts and color. It is fun making people look pretty and the results are immediate, which is what I like. I love what my work brings to a person’s attitude and self-confidence. We are in the

manent teeth come in. Preparing parents ahead of time allows for a significantly smoother transition into braces and everyone involved can be informed of the process all the way around. The majority of patients that come in to Dr. Albert are monitored at no charge until they are teens and ready to receive alignment. visalign. Dr. Albert is an Elite Preferred Provider of Invisalign, a series of clear computer-generated “aligners” to invisibly fix smiles. This revolutionary treatment system is available for adults and teens. “We take great pride in helping our patients achieve the smile and bite they always wanted, with the orthodontic treatment system – either braces or Invisalign – that is best for them,” said Dr. Albert. As an orthodontic specialist, Dr. Albert is properly and uniquely trained in the mechanics of healthy tooth movement and feels very comfortable using his experience and expertise to treat the most complex cases possible with Invisalign. Fun Contests & Great Community Effort This summer, Albert Family Orthodontics is hosting their 2nd annual “Summer of Music and Smiles” contest! Patients will get the opportunity to win four free tickets to two of the hottest summer concert tours coming to Tampa. Last year’s giveaway was four tickets to One Direction, which to a lot of the girls was hard to beat, but Dr. Albert aims to please! He said, “This year we are giving away Justin

Bieber tickets but I also wanted to offer something that adults would get excited about too and I included a contest to win Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson tickets. We have a lot of adult patients, too; 30 percent of my patients are adults.” Dr. Albert says, “Social media has become a great platform to run our patient contests through. We have really started using our Facebook page a lot to have a fun interaction with patients and let everyone know about our upcoming events and contests.” Charitable involvement with his local community has always been a priority for Dr. Albert. He is a member and Paul Harris fellow of the Rotary Club of Trinity, whose mission is supporting local children’s charities. Every year, Albert Family Orthodontics hosts a “Candy Buy Back” after Halloween, where sweets are donated to troops stationed overseas. Albert Family Orthodontics also participates in Toys for Tots through the Salvation Army every holiday season. Last year, Albert Family Orthodontics held a ‘Making a Change’ contest for local schools and was able to give $1000 to J. W. Mitchell High School and $250 each to Ozona Ele-

mentary and Madeira Beach Fundamental. “We listed all of the schools in the area that my patients go to,” says Dr. Albert. “The top 3 schools with the most likes on our Facebook page were entered into a random drawing for the top prize. Even though my offices are in Trinity and Palm Harbor, my patients come from all over and the Madeira Beach parents were really competitive.” Dr. Albert truly seems to enjoy interacting with patients and families outside of his office and is always looking for fun ways to show his appreciation. A patient appreciation party is even held every year at Astro Skate where patients get to skate for free and enjoy some fun times! You will always be treated with professional care and the latest and greatest in orthodontics. Take it from his satisfied patients, Dr. Albert does not disappoint! One patient writes, “Our family absolutely loves Jeremy Albert and his staff! He has such a wonderful and friendly demeanor with us and with our children. His office is beautiful and super clean with cool video games for the kids to play on while they wait. The actual patient rarely has to wait

over five minutes before they're seen, but the video games are great for the siblings who have to come along to the appointments. There's also Wi-Fi access and great coffee for the parents to access. His staff always greets you with a smile and are so pleasant to work with. I know one of his patients, who is my daughter's best friend, won “best smile” in the yearbook this year.” Get the right orthodontic treatment for your family at Albert Family Orthodontics! You will assuredly enjoy the treatment you receive and all the fun events Dr. Albert has planned for summer and years to come!
