Conquering ALS, One Mountain at a Time! Football player Steve Gleason, who played for The New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008, will always be remembered for his blocked punt on the night the New Orleans Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina. In 2011, Steve was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a terminal neuro-muscular disease. After his diagnosis, Steve and his friends and family started Team Gleason, in hopes of generating public awareness and raise funding for the research of this terrible disease. Recently, Team Gleason took on another endeavor – completing an epic adventure to Peru. Steve, along with Kevin Swan, Michel Rivers and Scott Fujita, a crew from NFL Films and Team Gleason members, endured a 7-day trek starting in Lima; taking countless buses, 2 trains, 7 planes and hiking 10 miles through the Incan trail. Their journey began in Cusco, where they spent 2 nights getting acclimated to the high elevation and visiting the Cathedral, Qoricancha Temple, the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cusco, Qenko and Puka Pukara. They went on to visit the village of Pisac, founded during colonial times, and continued their trip through the countryside town of

Urubamba to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. On Day 4, they woke up early to catch the Vistadome train headed toward Machu Picchu, taking in stunning views of the mountains and heading into the high altitude cloud forest. The 21-member group, which included Steve and Kevin in wheelchairs, and 18-month old Rivers, joined a group of porters before crossing a hanging bridge over the Urubamba River. At this time none of them had any idea what they were about to endure. The Incan trail is a combination of landscapes of high altitude mountain ranges (the Andes) and dense subtropical forest. It was extremely challenging to carry the 2 wheelchairs up and down the rocky narrow paths, but the fearless leaders, Scott, Blair and Marc, were not going to let the lack of water and sunlight stop them from getting to their final destination. After 10 hours they finally reached the Sun Gate and got their first view of Machu Picchu. Although the sun had been down for a few hours and the ruins could barely be seen through the moonlight, the group was excited to know it was the final leg and hour or their journey. Traversing downhill and along more steps in the dimly lit site, the group finally made it the Sanctuary Lodge for some much needed food, water and celebra-

Motion Council – Adjust. Balance. Thrive. By Marcy Sanford Dr. Jason Hurley, F.I.A.M.A, and his professional team at Motion Council pride themselves on the success of their patients, and over the last year, have helped hundreds of people get their bodies back in motion, starting them back on the road to a pain-free life. “Thank you Dr. Hurley for taking the pain away and literally giving me my life back,” says Motion Council patient Ricky C. “After only a few visits I started feeling better and my back has since become stronger and pain free. I should have seen you a long time ago.” Motion Council, located at 3687 Tampa Road in Oldsmar, is so successful at helping their patients because they look at all the factors that could be contributing to pain, aches, or immobility and develop a plan to help their patients lead a healthier, happier life. “Many times people will become so accustomed to the pain they are in that they begin to accept it and think there is nothing that can be done,” says Dr. Hurley. “We want people to know that they do not have to accept discomfort

and that they can live a pain-free life. The issues that cause pain can be due to an accident, an unhealthy lifestyle, or even emotional stress. We approach each patient individually and holistically and come up with a plan for them to end their stress and pain.” Motion Council offers patients a variety of health care options to help them get their bodies back in motion. Patient Bob T writes, “During my initial patient consultation at Motion Council, Dr. Hurley fully explained the benefits of his chiropractic, acupuncture, and nutritional services and how they could positively impact my personal wellness. Since putting my body in motion by utilizing his services, I have become pain-free and far more flexible and mobile. I can highly recommend Motion Council to anyone who is concerned about their overall wellness and who may be living in physical pain like I was.”

Chiropractic Services Dr. Hurley knows first hand the benefits of chiropractic care. “I have had regular chiropractic check-ups

since I was 13 years old,” says Dr. Hurley. “After college I was working in finance but was not passionate about my job. One day after a visit to my chiropractor I realized that I wanted to do something that I loved and that this was it. It is such a reward to come into Motion Council each day and help our patients.” Countless studies have shown that spinal adjustment can decrease discomfort in your head, neck, shoulders, back, and ears. We have thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves that influence every single living tissue in our bodies, and many illnesses and body pains are caused by misalignments in our skeletal structure. Irritation of one of these spinal nerve roots, whether chemical or physical, can create body tissue and organ-malfunctions. Accidents, falls, overexertion, stress, and other factors can also dislodge your spinal column and create irritation or injury. ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day & Public Policy Conference By Alexis Selby This past month nearly 2,000 people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, family, friends and other advocates, including Cheval resident Gary Dassatti, gathered in Washington, D.C. during ALS Awareness Month for The ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. While in Washington Gary, among with other ALS advocates, met with aides in 4 Congressmen's offices (Representatives Hastings, Rooney, Posey and Bilirakis) as well as with aides for Senator Nelson and Senator Rubio. Gary says, “We were basically seeing if they were aware of what ALS is and asked for continued monetary support from the House and Senate for the ALS Registry (where data is entered by current living pALS (people suffering with ALS) to try to help find a commonality so that a cause may be found. Currently we have no idea what causes ALS, only that Military personnel are twice as likely to contract this horrible disease. We were

also asking for continued monetary support for the ALS Research Program at the Department of Defense; this is very necessary, especially with the Military connection to ALS.” Another individual who attended the conference’s Rally Dinner was Baltimore Raven O.J, Brigance, who has been living with ALS since May 2007 and has been a leading voice in the fight against the disease. It’s Brigance’s first time attending the conference, and it’s the first time they are having a rally to open the festivities. Former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason, who, like Brigance, is also battling ALS, joined via Skype. The ALS Association hosted this three-day conference in order to empower individuals from across the country with the tools to advocate for policies specifically designed to accelerate the development of treatments for ALS. “During the 3 days, we heard speeches from prominent Scientists and Research Doctors on various issues regarding our cause,” says Gary.

story at the opening of the 2013 National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. “The fight against ALS has existed for over a hundred years with no cure,” says Brigance. “There is a need for greater awareness, along with funding for research and patient services. My encouragement will remind us of the root of resiliency, which permeates our cause. We will not stop until we find a cure.” While there are many causes to support, Brigance feels ALS is often overlooked when compared to cancer and other more well-known afflictions. Brigance recently visited the ALS

Therapy Development Institute in Boston to tour their facilities and was “excited by the prospects on the horizon.” But a cure can’t be found fast enough in his eyes, he said. He is hoping funding and procedures can be fast-tracked. “My hope is Congress will recognize the devastation of ALS and will champion our cause,” says Brigance. “There are countless researchers looking to unlock the mysteries of ALS. Unfortunately, people are dying in the prime of their lives because the answer isn’t coming quick enough.” Kim Hanna, President and CEO of the ALS Association Florida Chap-

“WC Colonics”

The state of Florida requires all Colon Therapists to first be licensed in Massage Therapy before ever enrolling in school. Missy says, “I have so much respect for CTs and MTs in the state of Florida. The program they attend is rigorous and comparable to pre-med A & P classes, which allows the student to really understand how the body works.”

Continued from page 1 to excess amounts of sugar and yeast and/or overuse of antibiotics, and according to www.candidaclinic.org, “Systemic Candida overgrowth has become a virtual epidemic, affecting millions of people.” Once Missy realized that she needed to take charge of her body, she did just that; a change from her normal diet to a healthier, more wholesome regimen reduced Missy’s Systemic Candida symptoms by 80% within 8 weeks. Missy says, “Growing up in California, I was always aware of natural health and lifestyles, but it wasn’t until I became very sick and healed many of my personal ailments that I decided to go back to school. When I was able to heal myself I knew that I really wanted to teach others.” At 27, Missy signed up to attend Nutrition School in Napa Valley and soon after, moved to Florida where while working at Whole Foods in the Nutrition Department, Missy met her role model, Brenda Watson, the proprietor of cleansing products called ReNew Life. “I found that many people were in search of colon cleanses to rid themselves of toxins and heavy metal buildup,” says Missy. “From GMOs to

In fact, according to a report by WHO, The World Health Organization, ‘1/4 of Global disease is caused by environmental toxins.’ Once I realized this I began searching for my own colon hydrotherapist to further detox my body.” Missy says that after only six colonic treatments she was shocked at

how amazing she felt. “I knew then that I wanted to pursue becoming a colon hydrotherapist to help people feel better in the same way I did,” shares Missy. “The truth is our bodies are not designed to endure the daily intrusion of chemicals ingested, from our food to the water we drink and bathe in…colonic therapy helps rid the body of those excess chemicals and toxins.”

down the steps to your treatment, answer any questions you may have and discuss the importance of ridding your body of toxic buildup. At Westchase Colonics, you are set in a completely relaxing atmosphere; Missy truly wants all clients to feel atease during visits. Once you finish speaking with Missy, she will lead you into the sauna room where an infrared thermal system awaits. Missy treated me to a 45minute infrared sauna session and the experience was wonderful. My body was relaxed and my mind found peace; you will love the sauna treatment, which allows you to have complete “me” time. What makes the infrared thermal system unique? Infrared radiant energy releases out of panels within the steam-free sauna and penetrate the body’s tissues up to two inches deep; you are literally heated up from the inside. The energy output from the sauna is tuned to correspond with our body’s natural radiant energy and induces 2-3 times more sweat output than a traditional sauna. Missy compares her infrared system to a “medical sweat,” clearing toxins out of the body through the release of a heavy sweat session. The sauna will completely relax you and is a great purification tool before your colonic session. After my sauna treatment, my skin glowed for days; the sauna is an excellent purifier and in-

creases blood circulation – what a wonderful gift! During your sauna treatment you will be in a clean towel, receive water with electrolytes and once you have completely relaxed and sweat out toxins, you will wrap yourself in a new clean, fresh towel and head to the colonic room for further cleansing treatment. Missy says, “We all need to cleanse and be aware of importance of elimination. Here at Westchase Colonics it feels like coming to an Internal Body Cleansing Spa versus a clinic. I want my guests to feel great when they leave here…refreshed, energetic, yet relaxed and definitely lighter!” The colon hydrotherapy session lasts about 45 minutes and the final 10 to 15 minutes is spent in the bathroom to eliminate any excess water as you replenish your system with a delicious dairy-free, electrolyte and probiotic infused beverage. “Seeing someone transform from feeling ill, lethargic and depressed to complete vigor, lightness and vitality is very rewarding,” says Missy. “I understand what it feels like before and after a healthy detox – helping people reach this healthier, lighter feeling is the reason I love, love, love what I do!” The machine used for your closed system colonic treatment is a class two medical device that utilizes gentle pres-

surized water to clear out the colon from toxins and buildup. The pressurized water works to exercise the colon muscles, which also may unravel any twisting of the colon that may be present and ultimately help to retrain the bowel. All fecal matter within the bowel is toxic. Other problems occur when the excess matter seeps through the colon wall and into other areas of the body. Colon hydrotherapy clears out that excess toxic waste and gives overall improvement to bowel muscles. Three sessions within a 10-day time frame are usually needed to clear the bowel completely. Some may require more sessions, due to many years of medication use and overall poor health that contributes to years of constipation. Missy covers every detail of the program. She even helps you plan a colon-cloggingfree diet. Missy says, I am going to be 45 this summer and I feel much healthier and energetic than in my 20s, since I’ve been aware of the importance of healthy cleansing over the last 15 years.” Missy detoxes about twice a year using the same colonic hydrotherapy treatment and protocol her patients receive. If you are looking to improve your overall wellbeing, health and energy, you will be greatly satisfied with the upscale purifying program at Westchase Colonics. Janet from the Westchase area

says, “I was nervous at the thought of having a colonic but Missy was so helpful and reassuring. I’m so thankful I can go to a place where I really feel right at home.” Missy’s dedication to helping people take charge of their health is inspirational. She holds seminars at her office consistently in order to teach people how to better their lives through natural digestive health and detox, and she lectures throughout the Tampa Bay Area from health stores to chiropractic offices to networking events. Clients are constantly learning while visiting Westchase Colonics through literature and discussion, which offers unbeatable prices for the treatment and learning experience you receive. Quarterly Pest Prevention Program Tackle those unwanted pests with Liberty Pest Management’s Quarterly Pest Prevention Program. Designed to keep pests out, the reoccurring treatments are kept under control with a several step process that covers both interior and exterior areas. The initial quarterly treatment consists of a comprehensive interior and exterior application. Then, quarterly maintenance treatments are applied exclusively to the exterior, eliminating overexposure to products/materials being applied inside the home, thus protecting the interior. This provides the customer with two distinct advantages – convenience and safety. The quarterly treatment rate begins at $60.00 per quarter and varies depending on your home’s square footage.

All of Liberty Pest Management’s treatments include an unlimited, no additional charge re-treatment warranty for the interior of your home. “They are the most professional pest treatment company I have ever encountered,” says Christy. “They take their job seriously and also treat their clients with the utmost respect and courtesy. The treatments were guaranteed and if I ever saw bugs between quarterly treatments, they would come out right away and re-treat.” Liberty Pest Management treats the infestation of ants, roaches, silverfish, spiders, earwigs, scorpions, wasps and hornets, fleas, ticks and rodents. In addition, they can also service homes with in-wall pest tube systems. They are A Rated by the Better Business Bureau and received a Super Service Award from Angie’s List in 2012.
