The Community Mourns the Loss of an Incredible Man! An editorial by Alexis Selby If I’ve learned one thing about life, it’s that it just isn’t fair. Sometimes the best people in this world are taken away far too soon. Such is the case with the tragic and sudden loss of Carrollwood resident and local business owner Alex Cooks. One of the most amazing, caring, kind-hearted people I have ever met, Alex had a heart like none other, with a love and generosity that knew no limits! A husband, a father, a son, a grandfather, a brother, a friend, a mentor and a local hero, Alex has touched the hearts of thousands upon thousands of people over the years. He had a smile that could light up a room and a vivacious personality and passion for life that would instantly brighten your day, no matter what kind of mood you were in. I had the honor of meeting Alex a few years back, when I was first introduced to his restaurant, Alex’s Southern Style BBQ, as it was one of the restaurants featured in our Battle of

the BBQ contest. A local favorite, Alex’s Southern Style BBQ won the contest hands down! But, even more impressive than his restaurant’s food, was Alex’s devotion to the local community. Loved by all who knew him, Alex was a true role model and had a passion for giving back to the community and helping those less fortunate. Through his charity Xmas For Kids, for the past 15 years Alex has donated bikes to children throughout the Tampa Bay area. Starting in 1999 when Alex decided to purchase a few bikes to give out to local under-privileged children on Christmas Day, over the years his charity has grown remarkably and to date they have donated more than 20,000 bikes, made possible by generous donations collected throughout the year; 100% of all proceeds raised goes towards buying the bikes. The tremendous impact Alex had on all those around him was truly incredible. Alex loved his family, friends, and community with all that he had in

What are they raising funds for? Health care settings are often stressful and frightening experiences for children and families. Providing recreation, developmental play, and play therapy gives kids strategies for coping and bring a momentary escape from their illness. It is through generous community support, and events like Christmas in July, that St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is able to provide these services that dramatically alter a child’s hospital experience.

How do I get involved? There are several options for event involvement, including online team fundraising, corporate sponsor-

ship, hosting or attending events in the community, or making a donation directly to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. For more information or to get involved please visit www.sjhfoundation.org/christmas-in-july or call the Foundation at (813) 872-0979.

Carrollwood Players – Not Your Grandma’s Theatre By Deborah Bostock-Kelley In an age of in-your-face TV advertisements, non-stop action in movie theatres, and a life too busy to take a breath, maybe that’s exactly what you need. Take a breath. Take a seat in an intimate 100-person theatre and for 120 minutes, escape everything that’s waiting outside the door and breathe. Laugh. Cry. Get moved. Get involved. With the actors a stone’s throw from your perfect view, immerse yourself in the lost art of live theatre at Carrollwood Players, 4333 Gunn Highway. Live theatre has taken a bad rap for just being for grandma and her retirement crew. This is not your grandma’s dinner theatre. Live theatre is for all ages. Carrollwood Players’ actors audition, get cast, rehearse for weeks and months and strive to put on a performance that will bring you back show after show. For just $20 a regular ticket or $17 for seniors, students, and military, this local 100% volunteer community theatre offers the same caliber of talent and yet is about a third of the cost of a theatre where the performers are paid.

Critically acclaimed shows like Doubt that alluded to a priest’s sexual misconduct, Looking that let patrons peek into the dating world and 5 Women Wearing the Same Dress with its both heart-warming and heartbreaking revelations were only a few of the nine main stage shows that graced the stage in the 2014-2015 season. Additionally, this nonprofit community theatre that has been part of Carrollwood since 1981, launched Black Box, a sixty five seat theatre that has already packed the house with its staged readings of Woody Allen’s Don’t Drink the Water in April and A.R. Gurney Love Letters in May. And a World to Carry On, an original play written and directed by Barry Silber about the life of songwriter Laura Nyro will run on the main stage August 20, 21, 22, 28, 29, and 30. The play that epitomizes the bond of female friendship, Steel Magnolias will be the next Black Box staged reading on September 5 and 6. Auditions will be held at the theatre at 7pm on August 24. Besides their main stage and Black Box shows, the theatre also is

home to several special events including its annual One Act Weekend which features eight original, neverbefore-seen short one-act plays written by local and not-so-local playwrights; CWP Laugh Off, a winner-take-all competition between local comedians; Life Amplified, a tri-annual spoken word and variety showcase for a local worthy charity; and CWP Masquerade, a spectacular after-hours collaboration between Kat Skratch Burlesque and Nine and Numb improv troupe. And if you enjoy improv, you must not miss the incredible talent

that has called Carrollwood Players home since 2011. Carrollwood Players features a combination of novice performers and seasoned veterans making fools of themselves for your enjoyment. Think the short skits of Saturday Night Live combined with Who’s Line is it Anyway and you have the concept for Nine and Numb’s very funny unscripted comedy. neous reactions of the nonperformers waiting their turn as it is to watch the actors on stage. Offsite, the theatre also hosts a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre show, an unforgettable night of laughter, mystery and mayhem at the Empress Tea Room. Upcoming shows include Clue, Downtown Shabby and a Doctor Who themed interactive show. Beginning in September and launching their 35th season, the theatre’s marquee will read like a Who’s Who of Broadway. September opens with the beloved special musical production of Fiddler on the Roof, followed in October by Neil Simon’s California Suite

and the year rounds out with the family holiday musical Scrooge the Musical opening in late November. January brings to the stage the unforgettable drama The Diary of Ann Frank. February lightens up with comedy/farce The Fox on the Fairway followed by the mystery, Getting the Gold in March. April brings the dramatic comedy Crimes of the Heart and May the farce, Caught in the Net. June 3-5 offers the One Act Festival, CWP Laugh Off and CWP Masquerade. The comedy/farces The 39 Steps debuts later that month and lastly in July, No Sex Please, We’re British ends the 2015-2016. At the opening of the new season,

Equestrian Inc. Launches Annual Hay Drive Campaign Equestrian Inc. is happy to announce their annual Hay Drive Campaign. With a goal to raise the seventy-five thousand they spent last year on the necessary hay to fee 20 lbs. a day of high quality hay to their offthe-track rescue Thoroughbreds, Equestrian Inc. needs your help! Feeding their horses is their largest annual expense. Although all of their horses reside on their 15-acre farm in north Tampa, the farm is unable to grow very much grass due to the more that 30 horses grazing on it. Dedicated to providing a rehabilitative sanctuary for abandoned, abused, unwanted or slaughter-bound horses, Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue is a 501 C3 charitable organization. This amazing organization, has been rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing horses for over 35 years. “Our mission is to bring people who love horses together with the horses we love,” says Glenda Smith the founder of Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue of Tampa Bay. The organization gives back to the community immeasurably through the Bright Futures program for high school students and court ordered community service hours for both

It is a proven fact that caring for and interacting with horses helps build self-esteem and helps people of all ages to develop a sense of responsibility. In addition to working with the community, Equestrian Inc. is also helping their off-the-track Thoroughbreds by rehabilitating and retraining them in hopes that they might go on to productive second careers as jumpers, dressage, event or trail horses. Once they have completed their retraining, Equestrian Inc. adopts them out to loving, appreciative families. Just this year alone they have already adopted out five off-the-track Thoroughbreds. As quickly as they left they were replaced by new horses looking for their chance at a second career. Adding Value and Comfort to Your Home with Custom Designed Furniture Custom furniture may sound expensive, but with today’s technology and computerized woodworking equipment that is no longer the case. Personalized furniture is now available at very affordable prices and offered in a wide array of attractive colors and finishes. Home organization has benefited greatly from this trend. Custom closets are quickly becoming a standard option for homeowners. Improving the storage and organization in a closet can add as much as three times the usual capacity of the old standard rail and shelf. Beyond the benefits of extra storage, custom closets look great and can add value to the home. Additional benefits include finding clothing or accessory items faster, enough space to keep clothes neatly pressed instead of crushed and the additional room to add new clothes. garage. Utility rooms including laundry rooms and pantries can all be made to accommodate more. Today new homes feature many of these as standard options and if they were not included, become some of the first purchases by the new homeowner. Remodeled homes are also benefiting since many of these “must have” conveniences can be great additions and provide more space, particularly if the home is a downsizing project. In the Tampa bay area a good place to see examples of these great ideas is the More Space Place. They

have two showrooms conveniently located in Palm Harbor and St. Petersburg. At their showrooms skilled space designers can help turn custom concepts into realty. With 3-D design software the concept layout can be seen before it is purchased and installed by More Space Place’s professional installers. The supplements we sell really do work.” Since opening his store nine months ago, Craig has really enjoyed meeting people in the community and not only talking to them about their health goals, but getting to know them on a personal level. Getting involved locally is very important to him. “I enjoy being able to build relationships with the community and the people that are into health and fitness,” says Craig. “We are family owned and operated and like to give back to the community as much as possible. We are constantly going to school events, and going into gyms and giving away free samples. Depending on your diet and the foods you eat, as well as the amount of exercise you partake in on a regular basis, the nutrition you get from food might not be enough. Furthermore, there has been a great deal of scientific evidence showing the benefits dietary supplements contribute to overall health and even in managing some health conditions. “Hattie’s” Continued from page 1 pages with an article about Hattie’s to further spread the good word about them. Hattie’s is one of my favorite cafés in the entire Tampa Bay area; my wife and I love their delicious fare and flavorful coffee. To be completely honest, I never really liked coffee that much before I tried a few of the blends that owner Bruce Boore and his son Jonathan introduced me too. Before trying their coffees, the only coffee I had ever had was a strong flavored Starbucks or a cup of Folgers made at the office, which left me with a strange aftertaste on my tongue all day. Needless to say, given those limited experiences, I was no coffee connoisseur. But after trying their coffee I realized that I do actually like coffee – good coffee, that is!

The Coffee The gourmet coffee at Hattie’s is by far the best I’ve ever tasted and since I’ve been introduced to what good coffee truly is around three years ago when I first met Bruce, I’ve made it a point to try out different local coffee houses in the area, and even around the world when my wife and I went to Europe last fall; none compare to that of Hattie’s. The robust flavor of the coffee is unique and distinct, but not strong or bitter. It’s the perfect combination of tasty roasted goodness that all starts with the perfect little green coffee bean they get straight from the farmers. Hattie’s Cafe and Beanery buys organically when possible; and when not they try to buy from farms that follow organic practices. “We try to buy from farms and farmers we know or at least from brokers and resellers we trust and know will point us towards fair trade beans,” says Bruce. “No roasted bean is older than two weeks.” Hattie’s also buys zero roasted coffee beans, because they do all their own roasting in house. “Coffee is a major part of what we do,” says Bruce. “We take a much more artisan approach to our coffee and still do espressos by hand. We also roast our own coffee.” Whether you like your coffee iced, frozen, or hot, or want an espresso, a French press or a decaf, Hattie’s is sure to

Hattie’s fresh-squeezed orange juice is offered by the glass in-house and sold by the gallon for you to take home and enjoy! have exactly what you are looking for. When Bruce and Jonathan first started doing their own roasts at Hattie’s they only needed to keep around 200-300 pounds of coffee beans on site at all times. Now they have anywhere between 1,600-2,000 pounds, if not more, on site and ready to roast at any given time due to the increase in local popularity of their coffee. Good job guys! Being that they are micro roasting, Hattie’s can control a much better consistency in the product they produce, which means each and every time you walk into the beanery you know exactly what to expect, and that’s a perfectly crafted coffee! Don’t forget to take a bag home on your next visit and enjoy their coffee at home. Hattie’s offers specially packaged roasted coffee beans that let air and any gasses out, but not into the bag,so you’re guaranteed optimal freshness and taste! Hattie’s Café & Beanery also serves up something that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else in the Tampa Bay Area, if not Florida, and that is their cold-brewed coffee. Brewed with only cold water, as the name implies, cold brew coffee features concentrated, supercharged flavor, and because the coffee bean is never exposed to heat, the bean doesn’t release oil or acid, making it a very low-acidic beverage.

The Food In addition to a lifetime of experience growing up in the restaurant industry, Bruce also has formal culinary training, as a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. He showcases

Hattie’s takes a much more artisan approach to coffee and does all of their own roasting in house. They buy organically whenever possible and use only the freshest, highest quality beans, all of which are bought from farms or farmers they know and trust. his skills by the originality of his hand-crafted menu items – such as his Grilled Alaskan sandwich. Made with freshly sliced Nova (salmon), avocado, tomato, red onion and sprouts and finished off with a layer of cream cheese, this sandwich is every bit as amazing as it sounds. The combination of the avocado and cream cheese perfectly complement the flavor of the salmon and pair for a taste that is out of this world. Another great sandwich option is The Fourth Friday – with roasted turkey, cream cheese and sprouts. Tied in perfectly by the addition of spicy cranberry relish before being grilled to a light crisp, this sandwich has a sweet and spicy flavor that is fresh and tasty. If you are in the mood for breakfast I highly recommend you try the Breakfast Club, featuring

three eggs grilled onto rye bread, topped with Cheddar and Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and your choice of two different meats – ham, sausage, or bacon. Just make sure you come hungry, because this sandwich ranges in size from 15 to 18 oz (depending on the meat you choose)! As if that breakfast club sandwich isn’t big enough, the breakfast burrito may be even larger, featuring enough meat, potatoes and peppers to put you in a food coma. Drizzled with fresh guacamole, I don’t know if there is a breakfast choice I enjoy better, although the Hattie’s Land & Sea Benedict, is absolutely amazing as well. Served with a yummy ginger dressing, this salad features a blend of baby and micro greens, shredded red cabbage, mandarin orange sections, raw rice noodles, scallion, broccoli, sesame seeds and carrots. Take it over the top by adding some fresh, grilled fish or chicken. “We have really geared Hattie’s towards the healthy lifestyle,” says Bruce, as he talks about the importance of offering healthy selections, using all-natural ingredients and buying organic as frequent as possible. Bruce also realizes that a lot of people are gluten-intolerant, and thus recognizes the need for gluten-free options. He says, “We have an extensive selection of gluten-free menu items, and what we don’t bake here we get delivered from a certified gluten-free bakery.” Pastries are another top seller at Hattie’s, and they offer a wide variety of bakery favorites, including brownies, croissants, bagels, muffins, chocolate banana bread, biscuits, assorted cookies, scones, pies, biscotti, and their delicious French Toast Strada. Hattie’s also makes their own fresh-squeezed orange juice, which they squeeze for you right in the restaurant, and sells other healthy items such as oatmeal and honey.
