Hundreds Attended Child Adoption Education Day at Old McMicky’s Farm and a 17-Year Wait is Answered Ralph Zuckerman, owner of Old McMicky’s Farm in Odessa, wrote to Neighborhood News & Lifestyles to say thank you for help in publicizing the Child Adoption Education Day (CAED) held on June 13, and to let us know that the event was attended by 450 people! Zuckerman says, “We are all glad and proud to say that the Child Adoption Education Day was a huge success. All of the agencies and groups that participated are certain that this event will directly lead to finding more Forever Families for our local children in the foster care system.” Zuckerman adds that 610 people registered for the CAED event and that 1,400 people visited the CAED webpage. “Which means,” says Zuckerman, “Eckerd Community Alternatives will continue to receive contacts of interest after the event. From all of our research, this was the largest Child Adoption Education event in the nation. We also hope that the Child Adoption Education Day was able to play a small part to inspire and reinforce all of the great and dedicated

work done by all of the agencies and groups serving our community’s children.” Old McMicky’s Farm is putting together a video of the day’s highlights and we will let you know how to access it when available. We watched a short section featuring 17-year-old Jabari’s speech about his wait for a Forever Family, and consider it a heartwarming “must-see” video! Our team at here at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles fell in love with Jabari’s spirit. “I always knew there was some family out there looking for me,” Jabari said. “I’ve been patient; waiting for them to find me. And a couple of months ago they actually found me… and we’re doing good.” Jabari found his Forever Family at an Adoption Match Day that was held at Old McMicky’s Farm in April. Neighborhood News & Lifestyles will continue to bring you news about future child adoption information events. There is a great need locally for people willing to make a difference in the lives of foster children – from volunteers with Florida’s Guardian ad

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED Imagine being taken away from your home, not knowing where you will go, leaving behind your favorite things. Now, imagine this through the eyes of a child. There are more than 3,500 dependent children in Pinellas and Pasco counties in need due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. Many of these children will need to live in a temporary foster home, but we simply cannot meet our growing need without more foster parents. When you open

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

your heart and home to foster children, you open possibilities for them...you foster hope. Foster parents must be at least 21 years old, have appropriate housing, and pass a background screening. Then, you will need to complete a home study and 24-hours of special training called Professional Parenting. You must have adequate space and be able to provide for your family now— although you will receive financial assistance to help care for the child, you cannot rely on this to pay your bills. To be a foster parent, you can be single or married—have a family of your own or be an “empty-nester”. Eckerd Community Alternatives oversees the foster care system in Pinellas and Pasco counties and ensures the safety, well-being and permanency of 3,100+ children each day. Children in foster care didn’t ask to be abused or neglected. They didn’t ask to be removed from their homes, forced to change schools, or, in some cases, separated from their siblings. Today’s foster parents provide temporary care for children, but leave lifelong impressions on their lives. Please call 1-866-233-0790 or 727-460-0600 Ext. 2085, or log on to eckerd.org/foster for more info.

Camping World Opens Up A World of Travel and Exploring! By Kim Thomas When was the last time you heard the soul-stirring symphony of the deep woods, or looked into a night sky that reveals the Milky Way? There is nothing better for reviving one’s spirit than to get away from the hustle of everyday life and experience just how green the grass is over that “fence” and beyond into the vast beauty of parks and scenic lookouts that are American treasures. Camping and road tripping in recreational vehicles (RVs) have been favored in America for more than a century. The invention of the automobile prompted adventurous individuals to immediately think of ways to modify their cars to be used for camping. The first RV debuted at Madison Square Garden in 1910 and featured a back seat that folded into a bed, a chamber pot toilet and a sink that folded down from the back of the chauffeur’s seat. The luxuries of home-on-the-road in 1910 look far different than they do today! Some of the RVs at Camping World (located at 2112 US 19 North

10

in Holiday) are more like mobile luxury suites complete with sophisticated navigation systems, high-definition electronics, gas log fireplaces, luxurious cabinetry, leather seating, and even outdoor kitchens that will be the envy of the park! If you are like a lot of folks, though, you probably don’t live in a million dollar home, and you probably want a more affordable camper or RV – no worries! Camping World has a huge selection of campers, fifth wheels and recreational vehicles with price points for every customer. In fact, for just $99 a month, you can embark on many new adventures in a new Coleman camper, which can sleep six and is perfect for your getaway. Camping World in Holiday is hard to miss with its huge inventory of RVs, fifth wheels and campers spread over the acreage on US 19. Some of the major brands Camping World carries include: Thor Motorcoach, Itasca by Winnebago, Coleman Travel Trailers, Salem Travel Trailers, Cougar Travel Trailers and Fifth Wheels, Sandpiper Fifth Wheels, plus more. There also is a large inventory of top-quality

used RVs, campers and fifth wheels on the lot. In addition to RV sales, Camping World has a full service department that services and repairs all makes and models of RVs. The parts department and the accessory department are fully stocked with everything you need to keep your RV in perfect order, including plumbing and electrical supplies.

The Camping World store is basically an RV and camping superstore with approximately 8,500 square feet stocked with everything you need to enjoy the RV and camping lifestyle. From portable stoves and generators to games for the kids and folding bicycles, Camping World has everything you could possibly need to have fun on the road and fully enjoy the beauti-

ful parks and destinations that Florida and all of America has to offer. You can even pick up some string lights to decorate your campsite! Many families are returning to their roots and taking their children camping, finding that the break from phones and video gaming is a blessing for the family unit. Plus, if you really want to experience the night sky at its most glorious, you have to get away from city lights. Campfire storytelling, hiking and biking are timeless activities that are wholesome, fun and truly recharge your batteries and can even help you build a better bond within your own family. If you feel nostalgic about your days of camping with your parents or grandparents, then you can bet your children or grandchildren will

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

feel the same when they are able to look back on their days of camping with you – and you can start making those memories right now. Camping World Hosts THOR Days July 24th & 25th, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. THOR Days are coming! Not only will Thor Motorcoach have manufacturing representatives onsite to answer questions about the fine-tuned motorhomes that Thor builds, but there will be free lunch too! The fun lasts all day on July 24th and 25th, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cookout with free food and drinks will be held both days from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. THOR Days will offer the perfect opportunity to check out America’s number one brand of motorhomes.

The Thor Motorcoach line includes the Freedom Elite, the Axis, the Ace and the Hurricane. When I visited Camping World, I toured several styles of RVS and there really is a great choice for every lifestyle. Of course, some were out of my league but one can dream! Some of the RVs are decked out creature comforts with big – yes big! – luxurious bathrooms and king size beds. Even the backsplash in the kitchen is high-end! But the more affordable RVs are amazing too and offer comfort and style. Camping World has financing available and maintains good relationships with numerous big-name lenders. Even better, Camping World representatives say that as long as your

RV or fifth wheel has a bathroom and a kitchen, you can consider it a second home and deduct the interest when you prepare your income taxes. Camping World’s Good Sam Club membership is $25, and can earn you discounts of up to 30 percent off of accessories at Camping World, as well as discounts on fuel at Flying J locations and discounts at Good Sam rated campgrounds. There are a lot of great reasons to explore the RV and camping life so visit Camping World in Holiday and start planning your next adventure! Camping World is located at 2112 US 19 N in Holiday, Florida. For additional information, please call 866-469-0989 or log on to campingworldofnewportrichey.com.

Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park Provides Home-Like High-Quality Senior Living By Deborah Bostock-Kelley There are some people who are perfectly suited to their profession. Michelle Lauletta, the Engagement Director at Arbor Terrace at Citrus Park, is one such person. This gregarious woman with a contagious big laugh and even bigger heart is doing her “dream job” with her “dream team.” Her face lights up when she talks about the people she works with and preparing activities for the senior citizens who call this newly opened assisted living and memory care facility home. Conveniently located in the heart of the Citrus Park and Westchase areas, Arbor Terrace at Citrus Park opened just a month ago at 13810 Sheldon Road, and unlike a sterile hospital environment, this fabulous state-of-the-art community evokes the feel of a luxury hotel or resort. “We are not at all clinical,” said Michelle. “We try very hard to be as home-like as possible with the normal activities of daily living.” Three types of apartments are available for rent – studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom companion suites with a shared bathroom and kitchenette. Small pets are welcome, but the resident has to be able to care for the animal. The benefits of an assisted living facility are plentiful. “Right away, they have the social interaction they wouldn’t have if they were just sitting at home watching TV. They have friends who are going through the same things they are,” said Lauletta. “We keep them physically and mentally active. We do exercises every morning. Their health is moni-

tored. We have nurses on site working here 24 hours a day. Families have that piece of mind that their loved ones are safe. We try to keep their lives as normal as possible.” Arbor Terrace at Citrus Park provides different levels of assistance, based up on the individual needs of each resident. The first floor offers a secured memory care for residents that require round-the-clock specialized care. The second floor offers the Bridges program and includes a higher acuity level of care provided by their ECC license (Extended Congregate Care) which also allows the residents to age in place. The third floor is for Senior Assisted Living. “Bridges is for early onset dementia and Alzheimer’s. It’s where the same question is repeated throughout the day. They’re not needing a secure community, but needing a little more attention,” explained Lauletta. “Part of our training is how to deal with this. Some people need redirection, some people

need distraction, some people just need you to sit and listen to them and that’s what Bridges is all about.” Lauletta said that so often the Bridges group of residents gets lost in assisted living communities because they are not yet in memory care where that is addressed one-onone, but not able to live anymore in assisted living. “We try to reach out to them and to gear our activities for their needs,” she said. “We set them for success and want them to feel good about themselves.” When visiting the nurses’ station, several students from Rasmussen College were beginning their first day interning at the facility. When asked about their first impression, they responded, “It’s a great facility with a great staff. The residents are very pleasant. We love it!” Arbor Terrace at Citrus Park showcases rooms themed to the Tampa Bay area. The “Tampa Theatre” features a media room with comfortable seating and a big screen

TV. “We will do popcorn and a movie,” Lauletta said. The “Siesta Key Salon & Spa” provides a place where the residents can get pampered in the salon every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The Multi Purpose Room offers a kitchen, couches, TV and tables for the residents to play games with staff and a state-of-the-art computer lab connects seniors to the Internet. At Arbor Terrace’s Ybor City Bistro and Café guests can enjoy a Friday afternoon happy hour and a cappuccino machine. The Longboat Key dining area is reminiscent of dining in a five-star restaurant. Cream fabric tablecloths cover each table, napkins are balanced in a perfect erect column on the center of each placemat, and a single beautiful rose and baby’s breath sit in the center of the table. The dining room also boasts a private dining area with a wide-screen TV for guests to bring family to share a private meal. Arbor Terrace at Citrus Park also offers a special dining program called

Engagement Director Michelle Lauletta Dining with Dignity that enables those that have lost their ability to handle utensils or chew food to enjoy the same five-star meal other residents enjoy. “It’s gourmet dining made in a way that guests can eat with dignity,” said Lauletta. In 2014, Arbor Terrace’s Dining With Dignity dining program received National recognition, becoming the newest winner of the Best of the Best Awards at the annual As-

sisted Living Federation of America conference. Besides many planned activities within the facility, like indoor bowling, baking and cooking, residents can participate in many diverse types of outings, from luncheons called the Lunch Bunch to Mystery Rides. “We have mystery rides where it’s not a planned excursion,” said Lauletta. “We’ll go to the Causeway and watch the dolphins. We try to keep our residents busy – physically and mentally. “The emphasis here is on the resident, not on the marketing aspect of filling the community. Other communities will spend hundreds of dollars to get someone in and then ten dollars to keep them in,” explained Lauletta. “Our philosophy is let’s take care of the residents that are here. This is their home. They don’t live where we work, we work where they live.” Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park is located south of Sickles High School at 13810 Sheldon Road in Tampa. and write by age five. “You can tell that his teachers love and care for him and I have no problem leaving him there when I go to work. He loves school and actually wakes up on Saturdays asking if he can go. He can already pass most kindergarten tests and it’s all because of his excellent teachers at Discovery Point [Lutz]. Mrs. Jolene really takes the time to listen to parents’ concerns and then addresses those concerns. I am surprised that everyone who lives in this area doesn’t send their child there.” Clara New, who moved her children to Discovery Point Lutz from another school, says, “My older

The classrooms have plenty of arts and crafts supplies for the children and lots of enrichment activities. Mrs. Jolene brings fun shows to entertain them and my girls are very happy there. “Albert” Continued from page 1 that are really what the clients are paying for. I feel strongly that my personal attention and high standard of quality care is what has made my practice successful and so highly reviewed by our patients.” Dr. Albert is a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and has had a private practice since 2003. A graduate of East Lake High School who then earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from The University of Florida, Dr. Albert was honored by the University of Florida as an Outstanding Young Alumni, for his contributions to his profession and community in 2010. What’s more, Dr. Albert recently completed his term as President of the Florida Association of Orthodontics! He is a member of more dental associations than we have room to mention here, but what’s important to know is that Dr. Albert is on the cutting edge of the newest technology while staying educated on the latest techniques. It’s not just the patients who are happy, but their parents and families as well. With affordable treatment

plans, a variety of finance options to fit every budget, and appointment times that work around busy family schedules, Albert Family Orthodontics is hard to beat! The Dampier family has three daughters receiving treatment at Albert Family Orthodontics, and said, “The girls had minimal discomfort after orthodontic adjustments. Our appointments ran right on schedule without long waits to be seen. Also, Dr. Albert always gave us parents an update personally on our daughters’ progress during treatment. Our experience in his office has been none less than extraordinary and we recommend that you go for an orthodontic consultation here and see for yourself.” Who Knew that Orthodontics was this Much Fun? I may be dating myself here, but when I was a kid, going to the orthodontist was not this much fun! At Albert Family Orthodontics, the waiting room is filled with big screen TVs, free WiFi access, video games and even a coffee and snack bar. It’s awesome. Past the waiting room and the superhigh-tech sign-in center, the orthodontic chairs are made of memory foam that makes getting orthodontic treat-

In addition to the “Summer of Smiles” and “Candy-Buy-Back,” they also offer an incredible contest that benefits local schools called the “Making a Change” contest. Patients and students can go online and vote for their school to win up to $1,000! This year, Albert Family Orthodontics already awarded $1,000 to Seven Springs Middle School, and $250 to both Highland Lakes Elementary and Learning Lodge Academy.

Making People Smile, Near & Far Dr. Albert is one of those rare human beings who is both involved in everything and completely humble about it at the same time. Obviously a doctor with heart, Dr. Albert was inspired by his church’s mission to help people in a remote part of Haiti. Cypress Meadows Community Church in Safety Harbor is trying to really help those people who don’t have access to basic things that we take for granted. Dr. Albert said, “This year I brought three other dental professionals with me. It’s a six-hour ride on dirt paths; it’s an eye-opening off-road experience to help people who need it.” Adding, “If we aren’t there helping, no one is.” Treating 160 patients and pulling 130 teeth, Dr. Jeremy Albert, Dr. Mark Mitchell, Dr. Matt Burton and Dr. T.J. Albert worked together to relieve pain in patients caused by dental issues. Dr. Albert explains, “We try to

save the teeth that we can, but sometimes in remote areas of the world, pulling diseased teeth is the definitive answer to the pain they’re going through.” Dr. Albert plans to return every February and bring as much help as he can. It’s this commitment to his patients, his local community, and the world beyond that makes Dr. Jeremy Albert a local treasure, and that’s a quite a lot to smile about! Albert Family Orthodontics is located at Trinity Professional Place, 1806 Short Branch Drive, Suite #102 in Trinity, and in Palm Harbor at 2445 Tampa Road, Suite A.
