The Community Mourns the Loss of an Incredible Man! An editorial by Alexis Selby If I’ve learned one thing about life, it’s that it just isn’t fair. Sometimes the best people in this world are taken away far too soon. Such is the case with the tragic and sudden loss of Tampa resident and local business owner Alex Cooks. One of the most amazing, caring, kind-hearted people I have ever met, Alex had a heart like none other, with a love and generosity that knew no limits! A husband, a father, a son, a grandfather, a brother, a friend, a mentor and a local hero, Alex has touched the hearts of thousands upon thousands of people over the years. He had a smile that could light up a room and a vivacious personality and passion for life that would instantly brighten your day, no matter what kind of mood you were in. I had the honor of meeting Alex a few years back, when I was first introduced to his restaurant, Alex’s Southern Style BBQ, as it was one of the restaurants featured in our Battle of

the BBQ contest. A local favorite, Alex’s Southern Style BBQ won the contest hands down! But, even more impressive than his restaurant’s food, was Alex’s devotion to the local community. Loved by all who knew him, Alex was a true role model and had a passion for giving back to the community and helping those less fortunate. Through his charity Xmas For Kids, for the past 15 years Alex has donated bikes to children throughout the Tampa Bay area. Starting in 1999 when Alex decided to purchase a few bikes to give out to local under-privileged children on Christmas Day, over the years his charity has grown remarkably and to date they have donated more than 20,000 bikes, made possible by generous donations collected throughout the year; 100% of all proceeds raised goes towards buying the bikes. The tremendous impact Alex had on all those around him was truly incredible. Alex loved his family, friends, and community with all that he had in

What are they raising funds for? Health care settings are often stressful and frightening experiences for children and families. Providing recreation, developmental play, and play therapy gives kids strategies for coping and bring a momentary escape from their illness. It is through generous community support, and events like Christmas in July, that St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is able to provide these services that dramatically alter a child’s hospital experience.

How do I get involved? There are several options for event involvement, including online team fundraising, corporate sponsor-

ship, hosting or attending events in the community, or making a donation directly to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. For more information or to get involved please visit www.sjhfoundation.org/christmas-in-july or call the Foundation at (813) 872-0979.

“Roy Hooker” Continued from page 1 us. I am extremely big on building relationships with my clients. I love what I do. I got into insurance 45 years ago because of my own personal experience where my insurance agent made all the difference in a claim I had. I became interested in helping people and State Farm gave me a way to not only help people with car insurance, but homeowner’s insurance and life insurance as well.” Now Roy, and his staff, are able to help others the way his insurance agent helped him so many years ago. Inspired by Roy’s success and ability to provide security and safety to his clients, both his son and daughter got into insurance as well; his son, Roy W Hooker IV owns a State Farm agency in Lutz, and his daughter and son-inlaw own Tampa Bay Insurance Center in Wesley Chapel. Knowledge is power in an insurance agency and at State Farm in Westchase Roy and his staff are certainly not lacking in that department. In addition to over forty five years of experience working in insurance, Roy has earned the LUTCF designation, a Fellowship awarded by The American College and The National Association

of Insurance and Financial Advisors. in order to help his clients and to run his business with the highest level of expertise. Roy is supported with an outstanding staff that includes Suzan, Denise and Dana, all of which have earned State Farm’s top licenses staff designations. Suzan and Denise both have over 40 years of State Farm experience, while Dana, as the newest member of his team, brings a hightech approach to the agency.. When shopping for insurance the choices and options can be overwhelming, and chances are you are probably like me - utterly clueless. How do you know which coverages and or limits to choose? What is best for your lifestyle and budget? If you don’t know much about insurance, you are not alone. But the problem with that is, if you try to shop for insurance on your own, you might end up overpaying for something you don’t really need. But, on the other hand, the alternative is much worse underpaying for coverages or limits so that when an accident actually happens you realize you are not properly protected.. So, instead of pulling your hair out worrying if you have the right insurance to cover you in a time of need, why not leave it to Roy and his staff to help you pick the right insurance at a price you can afford.

When meeting with new clients Roy and his staff take the time to get to know them on a personal level and once they have established what they are looking for, gives them their options. Using a chart he helps them to pick the best limits they can afford; the ones that will best protect their financial future. "Your whole financial future and your family is riding on the coverages and limits you select, which is why it is so important to carry the right insurance,” says Roy. “If you got sick and you had to go to the doctor, would you go and look for the cheapest doctor or would you look for the best doctor you can afford to help you get better?” Such as the case with insurance, the cheapest insurance isn’t always the best. Sure, it might save you a couple dollars each month, but what if something happens? Are you going to be protected? Roy adds, “1 in every 5 drivers is uninsured, and, of the 4 out of 5 drivers that are insured, a large percentage of them only carry 10/20/10 insurance, which is the base minimum in-

surance. If this is you, and you are liable in an accident, you may not have enough coverage to pay for the injuries and property damage. If not, then you may be personally responsible for these expenses which can result in a financial crisis for your family. How much do you know about your auto policy, or your other policies for that matter? If your insurance agent hasn’t taken the time to explain your policy and go over your coverages, I encourage you to come in today and let us review your policy and explain the coverages and limits to you. We really want to help our clients get the best coverage for their needs.” State Farm has been a pioneer in the advancement of technology and smart phone applications. Roy’s goal is to enable our clients to utilize their smart phones, tablets, and computers to help manage all parts of their insurance coverages. This is perfect for those with a busy schedule, as worrying about insurance is probably the last thing on your mind. Not only can you manage your insurance online, call

Roy’s office after hours or on the weekend and talk to State Farm’s after hours support, but you still get the same personalized service from Roy and his staff. State Farm has some very impressive smartphone apps that enable their clients to check their policy anytime, anywhere. This is extremely convenient, should you get into an accident, as with just a click of a button, roadside assistance can be on it’s way. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to file a claim immediately and provides step by step instructions of exactly what to do, such as taking the necessary pictures of the accident, and contacting the right people. Also, as long as you have your phone, you never have to worry about not having your insurance card, as it is just a few clicks away on your State Farm app. Another interesting app that State Farm offers is their Steer Clear app, an interactive program to help young drivers reinforce positive driving behavior. Drivers under age 25 that complete the course may qualify for discounts on their State Farm policy. This app not only allows parents to keep up to date on how their child is driving, but will allow them the opportunity to work with their child on ways they can improve their driving. Virtual banking is another area

where State Farm has become a frontrunner in technology and customer service. A pioneer of mobile check depositing, State Farm is a nontraditional bank that doesn’t have branch offices; their direct customer interaction and product assistance is provided by State Farm agents, such as Roy Hooker, as well as through their augmented telephone call center, the mail and in the Internet. You can take control of your account anytime from anywhere with many convenient and flexible ways to access your account. Offering free, fast online banking, State Farm makes it easy to pay your bills, deposit checks using your smartphone, make transfers, and more. Roy takes great pride in his community supporting local businesses, organizations and the community schools including Deer Park Elementary, Baycrest Elementary and Farnell Middle School. One of his recent projects included providing a group of the elementary students with coloring books that teach and promote traffic safety.
