In fact, Realtor.com’s latest relocation study has named Tampa as the top relocation destination in the entire country! According to the study, we have some of the most affordable home prices in America, which is starting to become debatable in my opinion. The last six months in particular have Tampa’s home prices soaring 20% in certain places. Even with that being said, residents get the best bang for their buck here. We have a strong Job market, which means it’s not just people of an elderly age moving to Tampa Bay. The Carrollwood area that we call home is one of the fastest growing areas in Tampa Bay for young professionals looking to buy an affordable home and raise a family. Carrollwood ranks as the highest rate of relocation for Millennials in all of Tampa. Carrollwood is attracting fast growing millennial owned businesses

as well. Young talented men and women in the workforce bringing new ideas and skills for years to come is something to be very excited about! As I was writing this editorial, enjoying my delicious coffee at Brunchies (see their ad on page 14) I overheard a young couple about my age talking about how they just bought a home in a new community by Mobley homes called Smitter Reserve. I asked them what drew them to Carrollwood and Mike said, “Carrollwood is the perfect place for us to buy a nice home at a price that was in our budget and enjoy a quality of life we only dreamed about in South Tampa. We were house poor our first few years of marriage and it was really hard for us. We didn’t like having to decide whether or not to meet our friends or colleagues for

drinks or food after work or pay our electric bill because all of our money had been spent on our mortgage already,” he said with a snicker. Someone recently asked me what I thought the American dream was in 2016 and I replied the same way I always have. The American dream for me is living in a place where I can raise a family, keep them safe, provide for them and enjoy our life together. Carrollwood is that place and I’m actually looking for a new home to start that journey presently. The family part too, I need to get working on that!

Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy Story & Photos by Mike Bird For over 3 decades, Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy (MJPAA) has been a leader in the Tampa bay area specializing in dance, acting, voice and music education. Their distinctive combination of performing arts curricula and professional compassionate faculty provides students an edifying experience while developing friendships and a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Under the tutelage of Artistic Director Mary Jo Scanio, the Academy has grown to incorporate education in all areas of the performing arts and has emerged today as one of the finest training facilities in the southeast region. MJPAA was named one of the top 50 dance schools in the United States in 2004 by Dance Spirit Magazine. Since then, it has continued to remain on the honor roll of Outstanding Dance Schools from 2005 to the present. We interviewed Mary Jo and two members of her staff and found that Mary Jo’s Performing Arts Academy encompasses everything; their slogan is “It’s so much more than dance”.

Besides dance they offer acting, music, musical instruments, voice, acrobatics and all of the performing arts. Performing arts teaches so much more than just the elements of dance. Students learn responsibility, creativity, gain confidence and they learn how to express their inner voice. Students learn life lessons, for example, how to

deal with adversity, as they get older. These are all the things that are encompassed in the study of the performing arts. MJPAA accepts students as young as 18 months and there is no limit on the age of an adult student. In addition to classes, the school offers vocal lessons, guitar lessons,

saxophone lessons, piano lessons, acting lessons, on camera acting lessons and more. Mary Jo’s has been in business for the past 35 years right here in Carrollwood. Mary Jo graduated from USF with a fine arts degree. Her performing credits include local, regional and national company

productions. In addition to performing in dance companies, she was an NCAA dancer and NFL Cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mary Jo has been teaching since she was 16 and has always had a passion for teaching dance and passing on the gift of dance to each new generation of students that come along. Mary Jo’s Daughter, Kristin Scanio graduated from FSU with a degree in Psychology and Child Development. She now serves as the

assistant to the director and is active in many roles at the academy. MJPAA also brings in guest instructors from all over the world for their workshops to join their nationally acclaimed faculty. MJPAA helps students prepare to make the transition to performing arts colleges all over the country. One well known institution is PACE University in New York City. PACE recognizes that MJPAA produces well qualified students who are ready to take on new

challenges and reach the next level of their craft. All of the instructors at MJPAA have four year degrees in fine arts, children studies, psychology or the equivalent. This is one of the many aspects that sets them apart. In addition to its strong dance training program, the theater and music programs are also strong. Served with their homemade honey mustard dipping sauce, the combination of flavors is absolutely exquisite, and from the first bite, when the warm Brie oozes out, you will be in sandwich heaven! Just as impressive, is the dinner menu, which has a fabulous variety of options to choose from, with tantalizing appetizers such as stuffed mushrooms, escargot, and fried brie, to name a few. On our previous visit we tried their Wasabi Crusted Tuna – which just so happens to be nominated as a finalist in the “Best Dish In The Biz” contest by the Tampa Business Journal, which is set to take place on November 6. With lightly crusted Ahi grade tuna served in a teriyaki ginger sauce, the crunchy outer layer was expertly contrasted by the freshness and tenderness of the tuna, and the flavors were tied in perfectly with the sweet soy ginger glaze. Seasoned and pan seared to perfection, when dipped in their signature dipping sauce, you will be hooked for life! Looking over the entrees on the dinner menu, I know I will soon be back, especially to try their Blackberry Duck – crispy seared with a blackberry Demi sauce and served with mashed potatoes and veggies; or maybe their Steak Au Poivre, which is noted as being “a taste of Paris with a brandy zesty continental sauce, served with twice baked potato and chef’s veggies.” No matter how full you are, you have to try their dessert – I recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding. “My mother’s recipe from England, this is a secret recipe that no

one knows except me,” says Andrea. This moist English cake, which is served in a toffee pecan sauce alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream, literally melts in your mouth as the sweet buttery sauce electrifies your taste buds!
