Dr. Albert says, “It is possible to go through the whole treatment without needing impressions. We can digitally send the scans to the to lab instead of sending impressions through the mail, which makes the process quicker. The scans can also be used to create 3D printed Vivera® retainers, which provides four total retainers for the patients.”

Hip Hip Hooray! No Impression Trays! One of the most recent advancements in orthodontic treatments is the use of the iTero intraoral scanner. Dr. Albert is one of the few orthodontists in the area that uses the wand to scan a patient’s mouth instead of using trays to create impressions. This device makes for a more comfortable experience for all patients, but it is an especially important advancement for people who suffer from a gag reflex. The scanner is used for appliances, expanders, Invisalign® and for diagnostics. Patients can see the digital scan of their teeth and how their bite aligns or if they’re wearing down their teeth unevenly. The iTero intraoral scanner even shows patients a simulated outcome of what their alignment will look like after they have finished their treatment plan.

With iTero technology, Dr. Albert's patients can avoid the discomfort of getting dental impressions.

If you had orthodontic work as a child, you may be like me and have mixed feelings about your experience. The end result is often a beautiful smile, but visiting the orthodontist may have been a dreaded experience. Luckily our area has an amazing orthodontics practice, which ensures patients of all ages will have both a beautiful smile and a wonderful experience every visit. Albert Family Orthodontics’ offices are friendly and inviting, with a caring staff who give personalized attention to each patient. Each location, Trinity and Palm Harbor, has a snack bar, coffee, and iPads for patients and their families to enjoy. The positive experiences patients have shared about Albert Family Orthodontics make me wish Dr. Albert had been practicing when I was a kid! Angela Santoyo says, “Staff is GREAT: Patient, understanding, flexible. We enjoyed going there not only because of the fresh baked cookies and coffee but mostly to see the staffs smiling faces, happy personalities and joy. Payment plan was affordable and within our budget.” Dr. Jeremy Albert, DMD, MS, a specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, has had a private practice since 2003. Dr. Albert, an East Lake High School Alum, earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from The University of Florida. Dr. Albert has been honored

with numerous awards and he is a member of several dental associations. Parents and patients can feel confident that Dr. Albert provides the most current, effective orthodontic treatments. The heart of Dr. Albert’s practice though, is Dr. Albert himself. His caring personality is upbeat while sincere, and he treats people who come into his offices like you treat friends coming into your home. Dr. Albert is the sole orthodontist in the practice, so parents and patients know they will see the same doctor every time. Dr. Albert really makes a good impression on his patients, and not the kind that requires a tray!

BP Settlement Funds: Pinellas County Wants Your Project Ideas In a continued effort to engage the community, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners is inviting residents to provide more defined project ideas for the future use of the BP settlement funds by completing a second survey, available at www.pinellascounty.org/BPideas until June 30. In May, Commissioners took part in a facilitated discussion to determine guiding principles for use of the funds. They did so after conducting a citizen engagement survey and receiving public feedback from more than 800 residents on how the funds should be spent. Project ideas should be closely tied to these Guiding Principles: •Funded projects should be aligned with the Board’s Doing Things Strategic Plan at www.pinellascounty.org/strategicplan, and should be planned or funded by Dec. 31, 2017. •BP funds will be used for one-

time only expenditures that have a substantial and visible community impact. •Funded projects should support Pinellas County’s economic and environmental sustainability, and/or create a sense of place. •Unincorporated area projects throughout the county will be given priority. •Use of County funding for projects within a city will require city participation. About the BP Settlement Funds: In July 2015, the county accepted a settlement from BP of $7.1 million. The settlement represents a one-time revenue source. Once these funds are expended, there will not be any additional related monies. The Board of County Commissioners values citizen input on this unique funding source. This effort aligns with the Board’s strategic plan goal of delivering first class services to the public and customers. The Pinellas County “Doing Things for You” app is available for resi-

By Julie Kanehl When life is hectic, there is nothing like stepping away from the world for a bit and getting a manicure or pedicure. Taking the time to care for yourself is so important, so when it’s time to choose a nail salon, choose Crystal Nail & Spa in Palm Harbor. Located at 3438 East Lake Road in the East Lake Woodlands Shopping Center, Crystal Nail & Spa has been a local favorite for 10 years. Known for their high level of service, Crystal Nail & Spa is dedicated to making their clients happy. Offering manicures, full sets, fills, pedicures and waxing treatments, there’s no doubt about it, Crystal Nail & Spa is a hopping place! Ginger, who has been coming to Crystal Nail & Spa for nearly 10 years said, “They’re wonderful, that’s why they’re busy!”

Being busy is a good thing, and owners Johnny and Jenny Nguyen are dedicating to keeping Crystal Nail & Spa at the top of its game. In fact, they recently renovated! They started with redecorating, and adding elements that calm, soothe and relax. need to worry about is what color you’d like to put on your nails! Johnny said, “Every three or four months we go to a nail show and we bring new things back all the time. Every year we take on more and more technicians. We have 25 now!” Each of the 25 nail technicians at Crystal Nail & Spa speak English, which is super-helpful when it comes to trying to explain what shape of nail you’d like to have, a certain polish type, a special design, or if you’d just like to get to know their friendly and attentive staff. Regulars are all known by name, and when they come in for

their nail or spa treatment, they feel at ease right away. Manicure services include a full set of acrylic, pink and white, pink and white gel, gel nails, shellac and more. If you have a chance, come in for the Crystal Treatment Manicure. During this manicure, replenishing and exfoliating oils are scrubbed into your hands while the aroma puts you at ease. Next, your busy hands have no choice but to rest while they receive a hydrating masque and are placed in a warm mitten so that your skin can come out smooth and hydrated. Their pedicure choices read like a dessert menu, there are so many to choose from! Pedicure choices range from their basic hot stone spa pedicure, which is a luxurious experience in itself, to more exotic choices like the Chocolate Pedicure, the Coffee Frappucino Pedicure, the Asian Delight Pedicure and even the Hot Buttered Rum Pedicure (still my favorite!). When asked which was her favorite, a friend suggested the Mint

& Spices Pedicure. Starting with a foot soak in some Pedi salt, your feet are scrubbed clean and made soft again using sand sloughing lotion. Next a cool mint masque is applied and followed by a peppermint lotion that is massaged into the skin. It’s fresh, uplifting and relaxing all at the same time. If you’re looking for a nail salon that is popular with the local community, visit Crystal Nail & Spa. From manicures to exotic pedicure treatments, Crystal Nail & Spa is the perfect place to come and get away from the rush of the world and relax. It’s crystal clear – you deserve it! Join ToyMakers of East Lake and Help Bring Smiles to Those Who Need Them Most! By Julie Kanehl The ToyMakers of East Lake are hard at work all year round, making beautiful toys for children by hand. Their goal is simple. To bring joy to a child, to see a smile spread across that little face, little pudgy hands grasping the wheels and watching them turn. They want to see older children race their car across the floor, or turn their therapy lesson into a game. Their only goal is to make a child happy, if only momentarily, while they’re at the hospital, or at a shelter, and to remind them that everything is going to be okay. That’s what children need to know when they’re going through a scary time, and these volunteers help to create these moments, one “Batmobile” or “Daisy Car” at a time. Using materials that have been donated by volunteers, local companies, national companies and seemingly from heaven above, the ToyMakers of East Lake have delivered thousands of toys to children all over the Tampa Bay Area, and be-

East Lake Fire Rescue Offers CPR Training to the Public More than 326,000 people in the United States suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year. Statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved. East Lake Fire Rescue offers monthly CPR training to the public. Classes are held at 6:00 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at Station 57, located at 3375 Tarpon Lake Boulevard in Palm Harbor. If you are interesting in learning CPR, sign up online at www.elfr.org by clicking on the Public Education section, or call 727-784-8668, ext. 204. CPR stands for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. Using a combination of chest compressions and rescue breathing, it can give a person who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped beating a greater chance of survival. More than eight out of every ten cardiac arrests occur at home. Effective CPR can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival. Cost for the class is $25. East Lake Fire Rescue will also provide group training upon request.

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: WHY GOOD STUDENTS DO POORLY AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT By Dr. Wayne Adams Often I receive phone calls from parents with a common theme: “My student has a very high GPA, takes AP, IB, or other advanced programs, and cannot score well on the SAT and ACT?” In my experience tutoring SAT and ACT over the past six years, there are three major reasons. Reason #1: Most high school students lack key fundamentals such as having had phonics, grammar, “recall” vocabulary, critical thinking, and the mathematics needed to do well on these exams. Without the ability to pronounce words, students avoid them or forget the definitions quickly. Most students cannot write a topic sentence, support an argument logically with reasons other than personal experience, and often are not able to correctly use basic punctuation such as

18

commas and semicolons. Reason #2: Educational directions in most high schools do not match what is required to do well on the SAT and ACT. Pre-calculus, most geometry, and most algebra courses poorly prepare for these exams. Recently, I tutored a 7th grader who had not had algebra or geometry. His baseline score as we started was 375. When he took the actual ACT exam, he scored very close to a 600 in math. Writing essays in high school are often an exercise in how long a sentence or a paragraph can be, thinking this shows academic achievement. In fact, it shows an inability to focus thoughts, to structure a clear argument, to use topic sentences supported by logical and memorable sentences, and to build a coherent conclusion that leaves a reader wanting “more”. Yet this is what is required for the SAT and ACT essays.

Reason #3: Most Prep Classes in high school are woefully inadequate. Recently, I learned that a leading private high school used the worst SAT prep book on the market today and the students were bored to death. In other words, prep classes are seen as “fluff” breaks between the real “academic” work at school … yet the SAT and ACT results often have more impact on students’ future (admissions and scholarships) than most classes in high school. It is not unusual for my students who have taken a prep class at their high school to increase 200 – 300 points on their SAT, and 4 - 8 points on their ACT. The Good News: I consistently find that students respond incredibly well and improve when they become both teacher and student as in a college seminar at the junior or senior level where I am their coach. My role is to quickly help them determine where they need to work and to be a resource as they progress. Lecturing is no substitute for determining a student’s baseline level and then structuring their learning around their needs. It very satisfying to see their motivations soar when their perspective changes from “Can I do this?” to “I

JULY 2016

can do this well.” and then to “Let me show you how well I can do.” They discover that real competition is internal and - when they do their best - external results take care of themselves. Learning the strategies often result in comments like, “Cool” and “That makes it a lot easier”. More important, they learn how to “learn for a lifetime”. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the top SAT and ACT Tutors in the country and a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor. His students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Cornell, Duke, U Chicago, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech, UCLA, USC, Boston College, Northeastern, UF, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, St. Leo’s, New College of Florida, U Miami, FIU, and many other colleges and universities; often with academic, athletic, or music scholarships. Normally, student scores increase 200 to 300 points on the SAT, and 4 – 8 points on the ACT. He has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice. You can contact him at 727-253-0639 or wwa0811@gmail.com.

Turf Warriors: Combat Veterans Connecting Through Golf By Kim Thomas Combat Veterans and Combat Wounded Veterans, the men and women who literally put their lives on the line for the United States and its citizens, make a huge sacrifice, and they do not want to talk about it so much. But ask about their golf game! This is something that Combat Wounded Veteran Steve Surface and his father Combat Veteran Stephen Surface viscerally understand. Stephen, who served in Vietnam, and more recently as a past Commander of the VFW says, “A Vet will talk to another Vet before anyone else because we understand they understand. Out here on the golf course, it brings us together.” Turf Warriors, founded by Combat Wounded Veteran Steve Surface, is a unique organization that allows Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans to focus on something that is both challenging and fulfilling – their golf game and the camaraderie they enjoy! Turf Warriors is what Purple Heart recipient and Vietnam Veteran

Rudy Salis calls, “going old school,” adding, “we are Veterans helping Veterans.” (Rudy also has been a longtime supporter of AVAST, another organization that helps Veterans in many ways.) Turf Warriors’ mission is for Combat Veterans to help each other to become successful in life, education and careers. “Golf doesn’t heal our Combat Veterans but when someone puts a golf club in your hands and you start swinging you tend to feel better and more relaxed. You’re thoughts are on hitting that little golf ball as straight and far as you can. What golf does is bring Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans, along with their family to a place where they can talk to each other, feel relaxed, get some exercise and enjoy life,” writes Steve, whose candid article was featured in Southern Golf Central magazine (Volume 6, Issue 8). Exposure to multiple roadside IEDs in February 2011 left Steve with injuries that included a mild traumatic brain injury, but he was able to work through it and return to Southern Afghanistan to finish his 12-

Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans are invited to experience golf at zero cost through the Turf Warriors organization month deployment as Combat Veteran. Once deployment was over, though, Steve found that a new battle was before him – the battle to feel normal again. When a fellow Combat Wounded Veteran invited him to experience something new and come out and play golf, he found that it lessened his anxiety. “I can’t remember how many golf balls I went through that day, I came home with zero but in a

great mood.” In 2015, Steve and his wife Stacy decided to start their own “pay back” for other Veterans and started gathering used golf clubs and bags so that Combat Veterans who would otherwise never have the opportunity could play golf. Steve explains why it’s so important for Combat Veterans and Combat Wounded Veterans to be able to focus

on something as normal as improving one’s golf game. He wrote, “We come from a war zone and then are expected to go back to who we were prior to deployment. We are young adults who have seen horrible things and now have to live with it, without showing weakness or telling our spouses and family what we have actually seen or had to do because we don’t want to lose the innocent respect, moral and honor that our best friends, the love of our life, our families have for us.” Turf Warriors – More Than a Game Steve Surface invited Neighborhood News & Lifestyles to come out to Turf Warriors’ second Combat Veterans Golf Clinic at East Lake Woodlands Golf Course on Tuesday, June 21st. Turf Warriors meet at East Lake Woodlands Country Club every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. The cost to the Veterans is zero. They get about 30- to 45-minute lesson from a PGA Pro; then play the course with other Veterans. Initially, the clinics were first held at Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course, which still supports the organization as well as the children of Veterans

through its First Tee program. Steve says that East Lake Woodlands Golf Club manager, Dan Riker, immediately agreed to support Turf Warriors. East Lake Woodlands’ PGA Golf Pro Kent Magilligan is happy to donate his time, saying, “I relate very well to these guys. I will hit my 23-year anniversary with the Air Force in September. And, golf, as frustrating as it is – it’s peaceful and it’s a very individualized game. The goal of Turf Warriors: “We want one clinic in every county in Florida, where Veterans can come together and enjoy the game and the camaraderie once a month at no cost to them. We are looking for Golf Clubs that will donate tee times and Golf Pros who will donate an hour of instruction,” says Steve. Pinellas County is just the start! Upcoming clinics are being put in place at Silver Dollar Golf & Trap Club in Odessa, which should start late July, and at Hernando Oaks in Brooksville sometime in August. Not only is Turf Warriors in search of golf clubs throughout Florida to get involved, they also are seeking Combat Veterans or Combat Wounded Veterans who can take a leadership role in each clinic. And if

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

PGA Golf Pro Kent McGilligan speaks to the participating Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans at East Lake Woodlands Golf Club you know of anyone who owns a building that could be used for indoor golf, please contact Turf Warriors. Steve explains that there are many Combat Wounded Veterans who can’t play golf outside, such as those who have suffered burns or brain injuries that make them sensitive to bright sunlight. There are many ways to help and Turf Warriors gladly accepts used golf clubs and bags and monetary do-

nations are used to purchase new golf bags. Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans are invited to participate and can find more information online at www.TurfWarriors.org. Community members who would like to support Turf Warriors, please contact Steve Surface at steveturfwarriors@gmail.com.
