Viruses, spyware, spam, and so-called “phishing” scams lure people into revealing sensitive and private information. Internet attacks crash popular websites. Helping Veterans Discover Eligibility for Korean War Appreciation Certificate The US Department of Defense wishes to award every U.S. Korean War Veteran a certificate of appreciation, as part of its 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the ending of the Korean War. =The criteria for eligibility are purposely broad. You may apply for this appreciation certificate if you served in any branch of the U.S. military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard) between the dates of June 25, 1950 through the armistice on July 27, 1953.

You are eligible whether or not you were physically in Korea during this time. Families of deceased Korean War Veterans may apply on their behalf. Many Vets are unaware of this offer, and/or do not know how to apply. The American Legion Post 147 in Odessa is volunteering to help any Veteran obtain the certificate and receive it at a free banquet later this fall. You DO NOT need to be a member of Post 147 to get your certificate through it. Here are two ways you can get all the information needed: (Preferred Method) Send an Email to: AMLegion147@Gmail.com and give your name and phone number. We will E-mail you all the info. No E-mail? Then send a letter or post card to Korean Certificate, Am Legion 147, PO Box 937, Odessa, FL, 33556 and give your name, phone number and postal mailing address. We will mail you the information. It is really important that Veterans do this as soon as possible, as the volunteers who process these applications, and the people planning the banquet need to know how many people to expect.

Get Your Party On at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s in Palm Harbor By Julie Kanehl Just off the beaten path, where Palm Harbor and East Lake meet, and backing up to the beautiful Brooker Creek Preserve is a hidden gem with a small town feel and a big time menu. Located a 1/4-mile from East Lake Road on Tarpon Woods Boulevard within the Tarpon Woods Golf Club, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s has a jam-packed menu, daily specials, a full bar and a family-friendly dining room, making Beef ‘O’ Brady’s the perfect place to come for lunch or dinner any night of the week. Come watch the game on one of the big screens, bring the kids and their friends for their favorite meal or share an appetizer on the patio overlooking the golf course. Whatever way you party, you’ll be glad you came, for the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s motto is “Good Food, Good Sports” and if it were up to me, I’d add “Good Times” to the list. The staff is used to hearing things like, “Wow! I didn’t know you were here!” and “Check out that view!” It’s true, it’s just a minute from the main

drag, but have a seat in their dining room which overlooks a golfing green and the Brooker Creek Preserve, and it feels like you’re miles away. Owner John Downey, who was a professional golfer for ten years, has owned this Beef ‘O’ Brady’s for the last four years and says, “We love it here. The view is great, it’s nice and quiet and we’re the only Beefs in East Lake or Palm Harbor.” John and his family own another Beef ‘O’ Brady’s in North Port, Florida, so they are no strangers to the restaurant business. Regulars love the fact that there’s tons of parking, 19 beers on tap (including 9 different craft beers) and a great variety in the menu. John adds, “We even get new menus every four months giving us a bigger variety of stuff than anyone else in the area.” While Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is a national chain, each location is different, and Palm Harbor’s “Beef’s” offers that “Cheers” feeling, you know the one. Patrick Carmody, General Manager, says, “We know our customers on a first name basis, and we have a family atmosphere with a staff that

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger topped with crispy onion rings and a side of fries is more than enough to satisfy the heartiest of appetites! stays.” Beef ‘O’ Brady’s serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, and the lunch menu is available from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday and features roughly 20 different items, as well combo options like a soup and sandwich. In the evening,

the dinner menu is filled with too many options to mention here, but I’ll try and give you a taste. Tasty, Affordable & Sharable from the Get-Go! Beef’s is famous for offering sport-food favorites to start the night

off right, like Beer-Battered Onion Rings, Potato Skins, Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders, Fried Mozzarella, and Cheese Chicken or Steak Quesadillas, but there are always new starters to savor. Right now their menu features their new Whole Lotta Steak Nachos, their Chili Cheese Dip & Chips, and their new Land, Sea and Air Shareable Appetizer which features 3 fresh Angus cheeseburger sliders, 8 tail-on fried shrimp, and all-white meat chicken dippers and fries. Big enough to share with a group, the Shareable Appetizers are a huge hit for your hungry family, your kids’ soccer team or to enjoy over a frosty beverage. Speaking of “frosty beverages,” Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is one of the only places in town that offers the CocaCola Freestyle machine, which means that you can have your Coca-Cola product any way you’d like it!

something for everyone, from seafood to ribs and grilled chicken to fajitas. If burgers are more your style, you’re going to want to order one of their 8 fresh Angus burgers, which are seasoned with a blend of kosher salt and black pepper, served with new toasted brioche buns and straight cut fries. Whether you like your burger traditionally prepared, or you want something to spice things up, you won’t be disappointed. Whatever way you burger, you know you can’t go wrong at a place called Beef’s! You can be “good” while enjoying some great food at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s. Beef’s has some amazing fresh salads, and some amazingly tasty “Burrito & Wraps.” Imagine taking your favorite sandwich ingredients, wrapping them in a warm burrito tortilla, adding the tastiest sauce and then just slightly pressing the wrap until each ingredient melted into the next. This is why their wraps are so popular. Ranging in variety from their featured Steak Burrito to their Club Wrap (my personal fave), which packs a big punch with thinly sliced ham and turkey with smoked bacon, cheddar jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo wrapped in a pressed tortilla and served with ranch dressing and your choice of a side. Popular sandwiches are on the menu from Reubens to Philly Cheesesteaks, and they go great with one of the craft beers on tap. Looking for a great roast beef sand-

wich? Try their Watterson, which was named after one of their first customers! John says, “In August we will be adding some new sandwiches to the menu including the prime rib sandwich and our pulled pork sandwich and sliders.” Daily specials are posted on the Beef’s Scoreboard and while the specials periodically change, ranging from $1 tacos to $3 house margaritas! There are a few staples that don’t change, like every Tuesday night kids eat free with the purchase of an adult entrée, and Thursdays are Team Trivia Night. Yes, kids eat free on Tuesday night! I love it! Kids can choose from fan favorites like grilled cheese, Kraft Mac & Cheese (because the other kind “just isn’t the same”, am I right?), Chicken Nuggets, a Chicken Taco, Hot Dog, Chicken Quesadilla, Chicken Tenders made any way you’d like them or 2 Mini Angus “Pretzel Roll” Cheeseburgers. Each of the kid’s meals comes with a choice of side, a drink and a treat! Not coming on Tuesday night? No sweat, because every kid’s meal is under $5! Score! Kids are a big deal at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s on a national and at a local level, that’s why your local Beef’s is such a huge supporter of East Lake High School. John says, “We are the main sponsor for East Lake’s football team!”

Let Beef’s Cater Your Next Big Party! Looking for a place to have your next big celebration? Golf Tournament? Christmas Party? Beef ‘O’ Brady’s holds private parties and offers an awesome catering menu for any group––be it a birthday party or a “Welcome Back Teacher” school function. Your event is sure to be a success when Beef’s is in charge of the food. Party platters start at just $14.99, and you can’t go wrong with wings! Need 200 wings for your team’s party? Done! Looking for more variety? How about a Fajita Bar at your office luncheon? Need catering on the go? Order a group of their Box Lunches, which start at just $6.99, each of which can be mixed and matched, and include something salty and sweet on the side. Whatever the occasion, Beef’s has something for everyone. Have you been to the Beef ‘O’Brady’s in Palm Harbor? If not, get in there and bring your team, your family and your friends, because no matter the score, everyone wins at Beef’s. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is open to the public and located at 1100 Tarpon Woods Blvd. in the Tarpon Woods Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. They are open Sun. – Wed., 9 a.m.– 10 p.m. and Thurs. – Sat., 9 a.m. – 11 p.m. For more information call 727-771-0691 or visit them online at www.beefobradys.com.

Eat Big or Go Home! Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is probably most famous for their award-winning wings, which are always made fresh-to-order and tossed in one of their dry rubs, whether you like your wings boneless or traditional, you can create your own from classic favorites like Honey BBQ, Garlic, Garlic Parmesan and mild-to-hot, you might even try their “Nuclear” if you’re brave enough. As for me, I like “Beef’s Signature Buffalo Sauce.” Beef ‘O’ Brady’s entrees include

Attorney Spiro J. Verras Opens New Palm Harbor Office By Kim Thomas Spiro J. Verras, Attorney at Law, welcomed guests to the Grand Opening of his Palm Harbor office, located just behind Pier 1 Imports on US 19 in Palm Harbor. Friends, clients and dignitaries celebrated alongside Attorney Verras as the Greater Palm Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce conducted a Ribbon Cutting. More than one hundred guests came to offer their congratulations and all enjoyed the uplifting conversation and the delicious spread. Dignitaries attending the event included State Rep. Carl Zimmerman, Congressman Gus Bilirakis’ District Director Elizabeth Hittos, Chamber President/CEO Connie Davis and “Honorary Mayor of Palm Harbor” Arlene Tracht. I had the opportunity to speak with several guests who also are clients, and all seemed to echo what one client who drove over St. Petersburg said, “He is

office is like coming home for Attorney Verras. He says, “I grew up in Tarpon Springs, and my family operated a restaurant in Palm Harbor for many years. Since many of my clients are located in Pinellas County, I’m delighted to return to the community.” Verras adds, “While our Tampa office will remain available to serve my Hillsborough County clients, I intend to spend most of my time working in the new Palm Harbor location.” After graduating from Tarpon Springs High School, Mr. Verras attended Yale University and Tulane Law School. Upon completing his legal studies in 1993, Attorney Verras was hired by a prominent Louisiana law firm and was formerly a partner at Jones, Verras & Freiberg, a New Orleans-based multistate law firm, for which he opened a Tampa office in 2001. Mr. Verras subsequently served as managing partner of the Bilirakis Law Group and was also a co-founder of the Unthink social media project. “Practicing in a small firm setting for the first time in my career, my goal has been to create a relaxed, personal office environment with the capabilities I was accustomed to in a large firm,” he explained.

Local Girl Scout Needs Your Assistance Helping the Oklahoma Tornado Victims Girl Scouts isn’t just about cookies. Girl Scouts teaches girls how to be leaders and encourages them to make the world a better place. One way Girl Scouts does this is through the Girl Scouts Gold Award. The Gold Award is earned through a take action project where girls learn to make a difference. Sarah Lucker is a local Girl Scout from Lutz, working on her Gold Award Project. When the recent tornadoes hit two elementary schools in Oklahoma, Sarah knew she needed to help the students there. She contacted a guidance counselor in Moore, Oklahoma and asked how she could help. The result is the following list of items which she is collecting to send to Oklahoma: • over the ear headphones • tissues • scissors (round and shape ended) • colored markers (thin and wide) • recess games (cards, board

An Experience of a Lifetime! By Bill Moline If you had told me 14 years ago that Rotary International had travel opportunities, I’m sure I would not have known what you were talking about. Now, it would be a different story; in the last three years I’ve been on a Rotary District Conference cruise, almost went on a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Russia, and, most recently, a four week trip to Taiwan, the Republic of China. The Taiwan trip ranks in the top few of the most exciting things I’ve done in my life; flying helicopters in Vietnam ranks number one.

About Rotary International Rotary International is the oldest (1905) business networking, community and international service organization. It has 1.2 million members worldwide; it’s in over 200 countries and has over 34,000 clubs. This year’s slogan, “Peace Through Service” is very much in tune with the international projects we do. We are about to

40

eradicate Polio in the world in just a few years; it has taken us more than twenty years to get here, plus $1 billion and thousands of people walking village to village to administer the vaccine to over 2 billion infants. The Rotary International (RI) Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is an all-expense paid, business and cultural exchange between two Rotary Districts – in this case, Rotary District 6890 (Hillsborough, Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties) exchanged teams with District 3520 (Taipei, Taiwan). The teams consist of a Rotarian Team Leader and 4-5 team members who are not Rotarians, not related to Rotarians, are 25-40 years of age, have worked in an industry for several years, and can leave work for 30 days. The last requirement really narrows the field. After I was selected (I had lived in Taiwan over 50 years ago) I had 8 applicants for 4 spots and interviewed all for professional appearance, demeanor, flexibility, willingness to do what it takes to make a good impression in a foreign country and

represent Rotary International.

Understanding the culture When we visit a foreign country, do we really “get a feel” for the culture when we stay in an American hotel and eat at Westernthemed restaurants? In GSE we stayed with Taiwanese Rotarians in their homes and changed hosts every four days. We generally ate breakfast with our host families, lunch with the team and our day hosts and dinner again with our host families. Our days were spent visiting the industries of the team members so they could see how their industry does business in Taiwan, in addition to visiting cultural places like temples, shopping areas, museums, theaters and vacation spots.

Building Relationships To have friends – real friends – in a foreign country, it takes more than a handshake and a smile. Living with them, dining with them,

After a tour of the Presidential Palace with our tour guide (in red) and hosts Jim and Andy. The Presidential Palace was actually built by the Japanese when they occupied Taiwan from 1895-1945.

One of our first visits was the Neihu Tzu Chi Society, a non-profit that provides healthcare to the poor. This is the headquarters where they do educational TV and radio and have a huge recycling facility. sharing in their religious beliefs (we went to many Buddhist Temples), hoisting a few adult beverages (if you partake) and discussing world situations and concepts of freedom and democracy is very exciting and requires some thought and preparation. I got in more than one discussion on topics such as cameras in their down-

town area, cameras in their cars (you can’t lie when your accident is videotaped) and assorted other issues.

My Assessment While Taiwan had changed considerably in the last 50 years since I had lived there, it was all for the better. The Taiwanese people, and in particu-

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

lar the Taiwanese Rotarians, were the warmest, most generous, kindest, and most humble people I have ever met. In my heart I had always believed that Americans, in spite of our “Ugly American” reputation, were the world’s warmest, most generous and kindest (but definitely not the most humble) people I had known, but now I know we have a long way to go to match the Taiwanese. For example, on one occasion our team was out taking pictures in downtown Taipei and became disoriented. Luckily, his host wrote the address of his condo in Chinese just in case. When he realized that he was lost he asked a passer-by for help. She did not speak English at all but he showed her the address and she walked him 6 blocks to the front door of the condo building. He was blown-away by her kindness. This type of incident actually happened twice – both times resulting in the same outcome. We were simply unprepared for the level of warmth and generosity exhibited by the Taiwanese people. Their economy is also doing well and we met several businessmen and women who own more than one business. My team and I could speak for hours on our experience and are right now making the rounds to Ro-

tary Clubs who want to see our presentation. If you are interested, we also accept offers to speak at other organizations.

A Little About Me Retired and living in Carrollwood, I, a military brat, was born in Tokyo, Japan. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Science and Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, and a Master of Science Degree in Aeronautical Technology from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. “Physicians” Continued from page 1 New Orleans together. They both graduated from Tulane with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology, cum laude, and then because they pursued a shared interest in public health and the study of epidemics, they earned their Masters Degrees in Public Health in Epidemiology at Tulane before graduating from medical school at Tulane Medical School in 2003. After medical school, they completed their Family Practice Residencies at Florida Hospital, a Christian and “faith-based” hospital in Orlando, Florida in 2006. Today, both doctors are committed to continuing their education, training medical students and working in the community. In addition to his practice at Trinity Family Physicians, Dr. Shirmo serves as Medical Director for Madison Pointe Rehabilitation and Health Center in New Port Richey. Additionally, he is a Medical Director of a home health company called Suncrest Omni, which allows him to teach and provide medical consulta-

42

tions for patients at many facilities in the Bay Area. Drs. Eldridge and Shirmo have also been selected as exclusive medical providers for Mike Ditka’s NFL Gridiron Greats Charity, helping exNFL players who were injured while playing ball. Dr. Eldridge says, “There are only seven locations in the whole country, and we are the primary care doctors for the program in this area. We’re very excited to be involved in such a worthwhile cause.” Dr. Shirmo says, “These are not the big-money players who have millions of dollars in the bank, but the players who played more minor roles, but who took on greater injuries.” Since their practice has opened,

they have helped countless patients, and in doing so they have become a part of many of the families in Trinity, including my own. I have been a patient since 2008 and I can honestly say that I love these doctors, and I know that I can call on them in a time of need. It may sound a tad corny to say that love is at the center of Trinity Family Physicians and their entire practice, but then again, why would we want it any other way? If there were more heart in the medical field would it change the way it worked? Perhaps that’s why their personal approach is so popular. One of their patients said, “Dr. Eldridge is one of the most knowledgeable physicians in this area. She

cares about the patient and is also involved with the community and promotes positive caring to all. She is thorough and doesn’t believe in giving medications unless she is sure the patient needs them. She is a wonderful, caring human being.” Another said this about Dr. Shirmo, “Here is a doctor who truly cares about his patients. He has a passion for them and their health. He not only cares about the physical body, but also the person inside. I cannot say enough about this man. I am so incredibly lucky to have found him.” Compassionate Care For All Trinity Family Physicians is committed to caring for patients first and

foremost, which is why they accept so many insurances, offer care for those without insurance, and have two major programs of care within their practice. They have a Traditional Practice, which accounts for the majority of their patients who range in age from 7-107, and they have a Concierge Practice, which is designed for patients who want even more one-on-one attention. The Concierge Practice is a totally unique approach to medicine and with all of the changes within the medical field these days, it’s a welcome approach for patients who are working on a health care goal, who have an illness that requires frequent visits, or patients who want to have additional access to their physician. Patients who enroll in the Concierge Program are often Traditional Program patients first but that is not a requirement. Dr. Shirmo says, “We have both programs at our practice, but our Concierge Practice is gaining in popularity. For less than the price of a frappuccino per day, patients can receive a lot of benefits—one of which is the Presidential Physical, which is

the physical that the President of the United States receives.” Adding, “All new patients in the program receive this annually as well as an EKG, a Pulmonary Function test and a full panel of blood work. The Presidential Physical offers a head-to-toe check up that the insurance companies don’t always cover, and these tests can be priceless and even save lives.” Dr. Shirmo adds, “The Concierge Practice is exclusive, meaning we have a limited availability of spots available, and we are looking for people who are truly committed to their health.” For most patients, their traditional practice is more than sufficient. I have been a part of their traditional practice for years, and I am always able to see one of the doctors when I need to, and most of the time I am able to get in right away, which is a huge benefit when you’re unwell. Their Nurse Practitioner, Kyle Walker, is also a great asset to the practice and she is incredibly professional and helpful. Dr. Shirmo says, “Kyle is very detail oriented. She’s never met a

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

stranger before in her life and she thinks critically about medicine. We’re very blessed to have her at our practice.” Dr. Eldridge says, “One important thing is that the quality of care is not going to change between the two programs that we offer. We are still offering the same procedures and the same patient care to all of our patients.” If you are looking for a doctor who will take the time to listen and get to know you and your family, and give you the care that you truly need,

then I highly recommend Trinity Family Physicians for your entire family. Trinity Family Physicians is located at the corner of Trinity and Duck Slough Blvds. at 1817 Cypress Brook Drive, Ste. 101. For more information visit online, www.trinityfamilyphysicians.com or call (727) 834-8377. Trinity Family Physicians is open from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Don’t Wait for a Leak! Protect Your Home! For most of us, our roof is one of those things we take for granted; that is, until something is wrong with it – as in, there’s a giant leak and we’re scrambling for buckets and pails! In Florida, our roofs take a beating, and with the hurricane season upon us, don’t take the chance this season. Instead, have the experts at Arry’s Roofing Services check it out. Arry says, “I honestly believe that people are reactive instead of proactive about their roofs. We can walk your roof, clean out the gutters, check the seals and make sure that your roof is ready for this summer’s weather.” He adds, “Sometimes things happen and no one notices – then they call and say ‘I have a leak!’ When that happens, our team of expert roofing contractors will help you determine whether your roof needs to be repaired or replaced.” Offering a proactive maintenance plan that will prolong the life of your roof, Arry’s offers an affordable maintenance program where his team will periodically perform a 40-point inspection, and make sure that there aren’t any signs of damage that could lead to a leak. Catching roof issues before they become something serious can save you thousands of dollars. If you know you need to have your

The Housh family roof repaired, Arry’s offers free estimates and they check everything, from the roof’s condition to the gutters, the soffits to the drainage points. There are many signs that may tell you if you need a new roof. If the tiles or shingles on your roof are curling, peeling or cracked, or if you see water stains on your interior ceilings, chances are your roof needs to be replaced. The longer you wait, the worse the repair will be, because as your roof disintegrates, your whole home is in danger. Don’t wait
