Arry’s Roofing Services – The Trusted Choice in Tampa Bay for More Than 25 Years

See “Arry’s Roofing” on page 20.

When you suffer from back or neck pain, it can honestly feel like the world is crumbling around you. Everything suddenly becomes difficult. Where others can breeze through their day, taking for granted each step that they take, walking, shopping and even driving can be more than you can bear. More people suffer from back pain than almost any other chronic pain out there, but when it’s serious, and you need medical attention, why go to someone less experienced when you could go to a nationally recognized neurosurgeon like Dr. George

Giannakopoulos, M.D.? Dr. Giannakopoulos has been practicing in the area for nearly 20 years, and Dr. Giannakopoulos has performed well over 7,000 successful spine surgeries in that time. His Spine Center of Excellence is located in Port Richey, just a few minutes north of Gulf View Square Mall on U.S. Highway 19, and

he has locations in Trinity and in Brooksville as well to accommodate his patients. In addition to teaching seminars and keeping office hours at his three locations, Dr. Giannakopoulos performs surgeries at The Medical Center of Trinity, Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson, Oak Hill Hospital and the Brooksville Regional Hospital. One of the most experienced spine surgeons in the country, Dr. Giannakopoulos attended Rutgers University in New Jersey and St. George’s University where he earned his medical degree at The Robert Wood See “Spine Center” on page 18

From The Editor Alexis Selby

Your Neighborhood. Your Magazine. My husband Matt, General Manager of the Westchase Neighborhood News, and I would like to take a second to thank you, our wonderful readers, for your continued support of our Westchase Area community magazine. We have been pleasantly caught off guard by the overwhelming amount of positive feedback that has been given to us, not only in the form of call ins and emails, but from many of you that we have seen out in the community at various events. We have received many constructive ideas about what people want to see in "their Westchase Magazine" too. We have been told at least a hundred times now about how much they love the positive, warm, “no-hard news feel” of the magazine. However, over the past year or so, we have had a re-occurring complaint that I thought I would never hear – multiple readers have said they would like to see more businesses advertising with us, as well as more offers and coupons. The offers I can understand,

but more ads? In the 20 years my husband’s family has been publishing the Neighborhood News, we have never heard this type of complaint. Recently, my husband asked a reader to go into detail about why she would like to see more ads and she wrote, "Your magazine is all about the place where I grew up and love. It's about what is going on in our community and this area. It is mostly family, or at least locally owned businesses that help keep the economy moving. I would love to see every business take advantage of your platform you have provided because I think it can really help them reach all of us, their customers. We all frequent the local businesses here and this area has everything you could hope for in the sense of variety of marketplace. I personally, and I am not alone, would like to see more coupons and offers enticing customers to come in and shop. Your magazine is something many of us get excited and anxious to read every month. Keep up the great work." We really appreciate feedback like

this and this example illustrates exactly what we want to accomplish for the community. We could definitely use all of your help growing our magazine. If you would like to see your favorite local places in this magazine, please, bring a copy with you the next time you go out, and show the owner. Tell them how you feel about our publication and ask them to contact us. In regards to advertising, my husband says, “I am pretty much the ‘anti sales guy’ or at least against the ‘old school’ version of a salesman – dressed up in a suit and tie knocking on doors and harassing people into advertising. That’s just not me; I like to let my product speak for itself and let my current advertisers and readers do the talking. This isn't to say I won't personally walk into a business and show them what I have to offer – I will – I'm just not into the high-pressure aspect of sales.” Once again, thanks for all of your continued support. We look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

Taking another step to widen its geographic presence in the Tampa Bay area, Palm Harbor Dermatology has announced that it plans to open its third area location at 11601 Sheldon Road, in northwest Tampa, later this year. Palm Harbor Dermatology, a thriving medical practice with offices in Palm Harbor and Brandon, is leasing and renovating the 4,140-squarefoot building on Sheldon Road. Ross Real Estate, LLC, represented by Rick Noll of that company, purchased the building earlier this month for $900,000 from Chiarito Enterprises, Inc. With a planned opening in November, the facility will be the first comprehensive skin care center in northwest Tampa staffed by physicians who are board-certified and fellow-

ship-trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery. A wide range of skin care services - from spa services to routine skin checks to specialized treatments and surgical procedures for skin conditions and skin cancer - will be provided at this location, which includes a medical spa and a fully equipped laboratory. “Many of our patients have been driving to Palm Harbor from Odessa, Westchase, and other communities in northwest Tampa, so it makes sense to open a facility closer to where they live,” says Dr. Amy S. Ross, president of Palm Harbor Dermatology. Dr. Ross is one of only nine fellowshiptrained Mohs surgeons (and the only female of the nine) in the Tampa Bay area, according to the American College of Mohs Surgeons. Palm Harbor Dermatology has grown to capacity in its Palm Harbor location, helping drive the decision to open a third location. The practice has been growing rapidly as more Tampa Bay area residents learn about the quality and experience of its doctors and staff.

Han Il Kwan Kinja – Deliciously Authentic Korean & Japanese Cuisine! By Alexis Selby Perfectly capturing the multicultural diversity of Western Asia, Han Il Kwan Kinja restaurant in Tampa intertwines unique aspects of the Korean and Japanese cultures to bring guests a uniquely delicious array of authentic Asian cuisine. A true staple in the local community, for over 30 years Kinja has been a fundamental part of Tampa’s history. “Open since 1979, we were the first Korean restaurant to open in Tampa,” says Yujin Kim, who runs the restaurant alongside her father Hei Kim and mother Soon Kim. Originally at another location, in 2001 Kinja moved to 8401 Waters Ave. in Tampa to better accommodate guests. Yujin’s family also owns another restaurant in Land O’ Lakes called Ginza, located at 2215 Collier Pkwy. From the peaceful aura of the beautifully decorated dining area, to the masterful presentation and aromatic flavor of the exquisite menu selections, dining at Kinja truly is an experience meant to engage all your senses. Yujin says, “Established by my grandfather over 30 years ago, this restaurant is a continuation of his legacy and we are dedicated to it and really want it to flourish. It is a part of my grandpa. It is the last thing that he left behind.” The front wall, which is decorated in his honor, features pictures of Yujin’s grandfather, “so as soon as you enter he still greets you,” adds Yujin. Recently undergoing beautiful new renovations, featuring elegant décor and the addition of sectioned seating, Kinja’s new look was specifically designed to provide guests with an enhanced dining experience. The newly added seating not only looks great, but also offers diners more privacy, and the

If you’ve never had Korean food, than you are in for a real culinary treat, as Korean food boasts deliciously distinct flavors, and the chef at Kinja does an exceptional job of bringing these flavors to life; and, if you have tried Korean before, you will find this to be some of the best you’ve ever eaten. Customer Donald P writes, “Authentic Korean food! The staff was very friendly and helpful in selecting menu items that we were craving for. I will definitely go back the next time I am visiting Tampa.” A true testament to the quality of their food, “we still have the same regulars that have been coming to our restaurant since we first opened,” adds Yujin. Encompassing a little bit of everything, Kinja’s menu perfectly embodies the uniqueness of the Korean and Japanese cultures, incorporating a huge selection of flavorful options, ranging from traditional to modern, and every-

thing in between. In addition, they also serve beer and wine, offering a nice variety of Korean imports. Whether you are new to Korean cuisine, or just want a little help choosing what to order, the friendly servers will happily give you recommendations based upon your individual preferences. Yujin says, “All the servers who work here are Korean, so they really know the menu well and are able to give you great suggestions.” On my previous visit Yujin recommended I try the Dolsot Bibimbap – a true Korean specialty. Made with rice, assorted vegetables and beef, this dish is served in a hot stone bowl, which sizzles the whole time you are eating. As the rice cooks, it absorbs the natural flavor of the sizzling bowl, creating a distinguishing taste that is really one-of-a-kind. The rice then begins to harden a bit, creating a thin crust that is absolutely delicious, and as everything heats up, you mix all the ingredients to-

gether for the ultimate Korean experience. Another uniquely Korean specialty and a dish that Kinja has truly mastered is Garbi, also known as Korean BBQ short ribs. Seasoned to perfection and coated in a sweet, yummy sauce, with each bite, the meat literally falls off the bone. Served in a more-than-generous portion, accompanied by 5 different side dishes, this entrée is the perfect share size; although, after one tender, tasty bite you might not want to share at all. “With all the sides, when you order a Korean entrée you get your daily serving of vegetables,” says Yujin. “Korean food is very good for you; it is really healthy.” Kinja’s menu also showcases delicious Japanese fare, which includes a hibachi section, giving guests the option to choose from a list of fresh ingredients, which are cooked to order. “It is important that every dish is made to perfection,” says Yujin. “My dad makes

A feast for the eyes with its huge portion size, this selection boasted huge chunks of chicken and steak and a nice variety of peppers, all grilled in a savory sauce that was really tasty. Despite sharing this entrée, we still had some left over to take home for later! In addition to hibachi, Kinja also offers a wonderful selection of fresh

sushi, and Hei is an expert when it comes to preparing the rolls. Yujin says, “My father is a great sushi man, that is what he loves to do. It is his specialty. He prides that we have the best sushi in Tampa Bay and I concur!” One of my favorites is their Fire Volcano Roll. In this roll, generous chunks of broiled spicy Salmon are placed atop a spicy tuna roll, completed with spicy mayo, avocado sauce and eel sauce. With each bite, the roll literally melts in your mouth, and the sauce is absolutely wonderful and is perfectly accompanied by a yummy crunch. If you are more in

the mood for a raw fish delicacy, try one of Kinja’s raw fish-style rolls, they are every bit as appetizing!

Sushi Buffett An excellent way to sample some of the many delicious rolls and exquisite cuisine that Kinja has to offer, the sushi buffet, held weekdays from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m., features a wide assortment of made-to-order sushi rolls, as well as a hibachi section and variety of hot Korean food dishes. “My co-workers and I came here

for lunch; so, naturally we had the lunch buffet,” writes customer Jonathan G. from Tampa. “I went straight for the Hibachi bar – there was shrimp, chicken, and steak available for Hibachi cooking. I recommend the Hibachi for starting off. Next you have sushi, which consists of about 13 or so choices. Try every one! They are all good, especially the fried ones. In the buffet they also offer other foods, including fried wontons, beef bulgogi, spicy pork, fired rice, and many others. The food here is really good. I definitely recommend this restaurant!” Looking to cater your next party or event? With their extensive menu, you will have no problem choosing selections that everyone will enjoy, and their wonderful staff can accommodate groups of all sizes. A delicious fusion of Japanese and Korean, Han Il Kwan Kinja offers a diverse selection of authentic cuisine in a beautiful atmosphere that truly embodies the Asian culture. Yujin says, “When you come here, you really get the full Korean experience!” Han Il Kwan Kinja is located at 8401 Waters Ave. in Tampa. They are open Mon. – Thurs. 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Fri. and Sat. 11:30 a.m. – 11 p.m.; Sun. 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. For more information please call (813) 806-1551.

Westchase Welcomes New Owner of Stone Chase Grill By Marcy Sanford While growing up in New York City, Frank Mast, (whose full family name is Mastandrea) was spoiled by his mother’s gourmet cooking. Frank was raised in a loving Italian family with a mom who loved to cook. He says, “My mother never cooked the same meal twice. She loved to experiment with dishes and make them more delicious each time she cooked them. She always used the freshest ingredients and always created delicious Italian classics for our family.” Recently purchasing Stone Chase Brick Oven Bar & Grill in March, Frank, with the help of his son Frankie, have since been busy revamping the menu to include many of their family’s Italian recipes; while still keeping many of the Stone Chase dishes that are already Westchase favorites. Frank is also the owner of Bayside Pools, and together he and Frankie run both businesses simultaneously. “Before I settled in Westchase, I traveled a lot with my job,” says Frank. “I really developed an appreciation for good food during my travels. We’ve

14

been listening to many of our regulars and our new menu will be a blend of new dishes and established ones. We also plan to have black board specials Thursday through Saturday to give our diners the chance to order other authentic Italian dishes. I’m very excited about the changes we’re making at Stone Chase.” Frank plans to introduce the new Stone Chase menu in September. Some of the new dishes include new appetizers from the brick oven, like Fra Diablo, Fried Eggplant, and mussels. Many of the new dishes come from Frank’s Mastandrea family cookbook. One of the family’s favorite recipes, Mastandrea meatballs, will be featured as an appetizer, as well as in a pasta dish, and as a sandwich. Frank says, “Our recipe for meatballs is truly amazing. They are handmade each day. The process that goes into making them is very time consuming, but they are definitely worth it.” Frank relied on many family favorites when making additions to the entrée menu. “We have many authentic Italian dishes on our new menu,” adds Frank. “We use only real Italian

cheeses and meats, which gives our food an incredible flavor. We will have lobster linguine and the pasta sauce is one that my mother used to make.” Other Italian favorites passed down through his family, like Orecchiette Mastandrea, Rigatoni al Telefono, Chicken Parmigiana, Osso Buco, and Chicken Caprese, will also be added to the Stone Chase menu. Despite the new changes to the menu, Stone Chase will still serve the flat bread pizzas that Westchase residents know and love (and yes they are keeping the $5.95 flat bread special on Tuesday nights). And, as an extra bonus, they are also adding Neapolitan style pizzas. This type of pizza is made with authentic, top quality ingredients from Italy, such as Caputo flour and sauce made with Marzano tomatoes. The crust is crispy and chewy and the ingredients are fresh and delectable. Stone Chase will also offer whole wheat and gluten free crust. Another welcome addition at Stone Chase is a new lunch menu that will feature lunch size versions of many dinner entries and salads, and will also include a new selection of paninis and

the dessert menu, where he has added Italian favorites such as gelato, tiramisu, and freshly made zeppole. A new cappuccino and espresso machine is being installed behind the bar, making Stone Chase an excellent place to end your evening with a luscious dessert and delicious nightcap. The inside of Stone Chase will also be getting a new updated look, with new lighting, new colors, and a brighter interior. The restaurant will be open throughout the renovations and everything should be completed by September, just in time for the roll out of the new menu.

To stay up to date on the latest changes, additions, and specials at Stone Chase, visit their Facebook page. In addition to their weekly specials, Frank, who is also the owner of Bayside Pools, will be offering specials to Bayside Pool customers and on Stone Chase’s Facebook page. Verras, Attorney at Law, welcomed guests to the Grand Opening of his Palm Harbor office, located just behind Pier 1 Imports on US 19 in Palm Harbor. Friends, clients and dignitaries celebrated alongside Attorney Verras as the Greater Palm Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce conducted a Ribbon Cutting. More than one hundred guests came to offer their congratulations and all enjoyed the uplifting conversation and the delicious spread. Dignitaries attending the event included State Rep. Carl Zimmerman, Congressman Gus Bilirakis’ District Director Elizabeth Hittos, Chamber President/CEO Connie Davis and “Honorary Mayor of Palm Harbor” Arlene Tracht. I had the opportunity to speak with several guests who were clients, and all seemed to echo what one client who drove over St. Petersburg said, “He is just the nicest man. Spiro Verras really does

Upon completing his legal studies in 1993, Attorney Verras was hired by a prominent Louisiana law firm and was formerly a partner at Jones, Verras & Freiberg, a New Orleans-based multistate law firm, for which he opened a Tampa office in 2001. Mr. Verras subsequently served as managing partner of the Bilirakis Law Group and was also a co-founder of the Unthink social media project. “Practicing in a small firm setting for the first time in my career, my goal has been to create a relaxed, personal office environment with the capabili-

“Spine Center” Continued from page 1 Johnson Medical School in 1987. In 1988 he completed his internship in general surgery at The University of Rochester, followed by completing a fellowship at the University of Massachusetts in the area of Clinical Neurosurgery. Dr. Giannakopoulos completed his residency at the Hahnemann University Program in Neurosurgery in 1994, and passed the American Board of Neurological Surgery with the distinct honor of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Giannakopoulos has been both the Chief of Staff and The Chairman of Surgery at both Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and at the former Community Hospital in New Port Richey. While Dr. Giannakopoulos is known for everything from successful spine surgeries to removing brain tumors, I know Dr. Giannakopoulos as my doctor. After getting into a car accident in 2009, and having a terrible reaction to an epidural steroid injection given to me by another doctor, Dr. Giannakopoulos was the

first physician to really sit down with me and look at all of my films. Dr. Giannakopoulos ordered his own film, and was able to properly diagnose my back and neck problems. Since then, he has been a great support to me. I can honestly recommend him personally to everyone I meet. He is knowledgeable, experienced, kind and professional. While Dr. Giannakopoulos is a keenly skilled surgeon, he prefers to provide conservative treatment options where possible. Unlike other doctors who are quick to provide prescription pain pills, Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff shy away from doing so. Instead they focus on providing safe and conservative techniques like bracing, physical therapy and interventional pain treatments like Facet Blocks, Epidural Injections and Radiofrequent Nerve Ablations. When the conservative approach is no longer working, Dr. Giannakopoulos is the person to turn to for surgery. He has more hours in the O.R. than many of the other neurosurgeons in the state, and he has also trained extensively in microscopic surgeries. In fact, all of his

Dr. Giannakopoulos can perform every kind of spinal surgery from minimally invasive surgeries, to surgeries such as Laminectomies, Laminotomies, Foraminotomies, Microdiscectomies and brain surgeries. One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s patients said, “I have been seeing the Doctor for seven years now. He has kept me out of pain. Last week he performed a laminectomy on L4/5

and it went perfectly. I highly recommend Dr. Giannakopoulos.” Dr. Giannakopoulos also specializes in treating Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spine that is caused by the natural wear and tear that our spines experience in our lifetimes. In fact, he believes that this is the #1 spine problem that faces the elderly. Spinal Stenosis causes pain and a problem straightening the spine, leading to a bending over or a haunch. Unfortunately many elderly

folks think that this is just a part of aging that they have to learn to live with, but that’s not necessarily the case. “My focus is to help prevent patients from becoming paralyzed,” says Dr. Giannakopoulos. “If a patient who used to be able to walk two miles can’t get around the grocery store without pain, I can help them. The philosophy of the Neurosurgeon is to restore function and to preserve neurological functions. What happens in the case of severe Spinal Stenosis is that something is encroaching on the spinal canal, and to cure the problem, you really need to operate. This kind of surgery is safe and provides between 85% and 90% relief of symptoms, and the recovery is generally very quick.” One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s patients wrote, “My mother has had three cervical surgeries and is heading for her first lumbar surgery this week…The staff is always very caring and take care of my questions and FMLA paperwork in record time. They have offered assurances that all will be taken care of and it was done as stated. They even coordinated

home nursing care for my mom since I can’t be there for the full six weeks of recovery. When she told me she needed the lumbar surgery, I wanted to make sure Dr. G was the only doctor to have anything to do with her surgery and he is. I’m very happy to know that Dr. G is so thorough and as skilled as he is. Mom’s recovery has always been weeks less than predicted and she is in her early 60s. Patience is a virtue and his staff is nothing but.” Whether you are having lower back pain, neck pain, suffering from Spinal Stenosis, or are having numbness or weakness in your extremities, Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff can help get you back on your feet again. I know because he really helped me. The Spine Center of Excellence has three locations. The main office is located at 11425 US Hwy 19 in Port Richey. The Brooksville office is located at 11341 Cortez Blvd, and the Trinity location is conveniently located at 2433 Country Place Blvd. For more information or to make an appointment please call (727) 861-2332.

Elite™ contractors, as it requires dedication, hard work and education, which the team at Arry’s has. Never using subcontractors, customers can trust Arry’s Roofing to do the job right. Arry says, “My passion is to be the leading example for the roofing industry to follow.”

Don’t Wait for a Leak! Protect Your Home! For most of us, our roof is one of those things we take for granted; that is, until something is wrong with it – as in, there’s a giant leak and we’re scrambling for buckets and pails! In Florida, our roofs take a beating, and with the hurricane season upon us, don’t take the chance this season. Instead, have the experts at Arry’s Roofing Services check it out. Arry says, “I honestly believe that people are reactive instead of proactive about their roofs. We can walk your roof, clean out the gutters, check the seals and make sure that your roof is ready for this summer’s weather.” He adds, “Sometimes things happen and no one notices – then they call and say ‘I have a leak!’ When that happens, our team of expert roofing contractors will help you determine whether your roof needs to be repaired or replaced.” Offering a proactive maintenance plan that will prolong the life of your roof, Arry’s offers an affordable main-

tenance program where his team will periodically perform a 40-point inspection, and make sure that there aren’t any signs of damage that could lead to a leak. Catching roof issues before they become something serious can save you thousands of dollars. If you know you need to have your roof repaired, Arry’s offers free estimates and they check everything, from the roof’s condition to the gutters, the soffits to the drainage points. There are many signs that may tell you if you need a new roof. If the tiles or shingles on your roof are curling, peeling or cracked, or if you see water stains on your interior ceilings, chances are your roof needs to be replaced. The longer you wait, the worse the repair will be, because as your roof disintegrates, your whole home is in danger. Don’t wait until disaster strikes to call Arry’s qualified, certified team of professionals. If you don’t think a repair is going to do it, or your roof is aged, Arry’s has a great reputation within our community. From shingle to tile, flat and low-

slope roofing to modern and maintenance free metal roofs, Arry’s Roofing Services can help you find the right roof for your home. Arry’s also offers financing, including a limited time, six months- same as cash, program. Isaac and Cindy Rivers say, “If getting a new roof could be described as an 'enjoyable' event, our experience with Arry's Roofing would qualify. From our first contact with the office, everyone was very courteous and professional. This was as 'enjoyable' as a roofing project could be. They were clean and prompt, and delivered exactly as was promised. We were quickly heading into a rainy period and the crew really showed that they were experts in their field, working efficiently and carefully, covering vulnerable areas during sporadic rain showers and then

getting quickly back to work when able. They showed up on time and cleaned up the area well when done for the day. We would definitely use them again if we ever need roofing work done, and would definitely recommend without hesitation.”
