Longtime residents of the Orlando area, the Dengs began their entrepreneurial journey in 2013 and relocated to Tampa to open their first Primrose school. They are thrilled to bring the Primrose experience, offering premier early education and care, to families in the Carrollwood community. The Dengs first discovered Primrose Schools in 2009 when searching for child care options for their son, Kobe. Sandy and Shi both worked full

time and wanted to ensure Kobe was in a safe, nurturing environment that also fostered his learning. After a few months of Kobe attending a Primrose school, Sandy and Shi were not the only ones who noticed his development; family and friends were also impressed with the improvement of his social, emotional and cognitive skills. It would be Kobe’s development while attending a Primrose school and the Deng’s passion for providing high-quality education to other young children that motivated them to open See “Primrose” on page 32.

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

From The Publisher Matt Selby

The Community We Serve Is The Most Important Part Of What We Do! In 2010 my father trademarked his magazine name as Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. In every magazine he’s owned over the past 20 years, the publication’s name has always been the focal point of the masthead, with the area in which it serves smaller on top. Over the past 8 years I’ve worked alongside my family and their publishing business. In that time I’ve noticed a trend that seems to be increasing with each monthly issue that is distributed in all 7 editions of our publications, which reach over 130,000 Bay area homes and local businesses. My wife and I love to get involved in the communities and attend as many events all across Tampa Bay as we can. Almost every time we’re out, a reader who recognizes us comes up and says

something along the lines of “I love MY Carrollwood magazine!” ;or Odessa, or Trinity, or Westchase; we do have 7 editions so depending on where the event is, the edition they reference may be different. But, regardless, they all have one thing in common, and that is they take ownership of the magazine as being the magazine for that community. They refer to it as “MY magazine.” This is the single biggest compliment we can receive, because it symbolizes exactly what we set out to do with these publications. We have always wanted to bring our community together as one big neighborhood and when we hear the same comment over and over again, we really feel like we’re doing our job. In 2014 we decided to trademark “Your neighborhood, Your

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

magazine.” We added that to our masthead as well, right under our logo. We did this just to reinforce what so many people were already saying about us. It really means a lot to my family and me that you read and enjoy our publication each month, so THANK YOU! If you noticed the masthead on our front cover of this issue you’ll see that we changed things up again. We decided to make Carrollwood the focal point of our cover’s masthead with our magazine name smaller and underneath. The community in which we serve is the most important part of what we do so we decided to proudly post it for all to see; big and bold right there on the top of our front cover! Again, THANK YOU Carrollwood; thank you for all of your support!

and abilities can enjoy.” Travis, along with store manager and Senior Advisor Ron Muller, love turning people into divers. They will happily guide you in the right direction and make suggestions as to the proper gear for exactly what you are looking to accomplish. They will be there for you every step of the way from beginner certification, advanced certification, to master diver. They offer continuing education courses such as night diving, rescue diving, deep diving, wreck diving, and a whole lot more. Coming this fall they will also begin offering free-diving classes.

Save Money By Becoming a Member of Gulf Coast Divers One of the things that sets Gulf Coast Divers apart from other dive shops is their membership program. “This program was developed to help offset some of the cost involved in scuba diving, so that people can dive more often.” It also allows divers to try different equipment, which will better prepare them, if and when they decided to buy their own. Gulf coast Divers offers two distinct memberships. The platinum membership includes unlimited use of all rental equipment. The Gold membership includes unlimited use of scuba tanks.

Both memberships are available for a low monthly fee with a 12-month minimum commitment. “The last thing Ron and I want is to certify you and never see you again, that is why we started this membership program in the first place. We want to encourage you to come back and really enjoy your scuba certification,” says Meyers. Other benefits to being a member include discounts off your continuing education classes, and 50% cash back towards the purchase of a qualifying dive system. “One of the things I love about teaching scuba is the people you meet along the way,” says Gulf Coast Divers

owner Travis Meyers. “Scuba diving is a fun activity and is a great way to bond and meet new people.” Travis can attest to this, as he met his wife Julie while teaching an Open Water certification class at his store. Now, 6 years and 3 kids later, scuba diving is still something they enjoy together! Gulf Coast Divers is located at 10414 N Dale Mabry Hwy in Tampa. Dazzle and Shine With a Custom-Made Masterpiece From Tess Fine Jewelry By Matt Selby Tess Fine Jewelry may be new to the area, but by no means are they new to the industry. Owner and master jewelry designer Tuong Nguyen has been in the industry for over 25 years. Tuong really found his niche in the custom jewelry design market about 15 years ago, staking his claim and putting his magical touch on thousands upon thousands of extraordinary custom-made pieces. When asked about why he chose this career, Tuong responded with, “I didn’t choose it. In fact, I had no idea this was my path would take me. All I knew was that I loved to design and work with my hands. I got my first job in jewelry; I was instantly determined to become the very best at it that I could be. I really feel like it chose me.” When people walk into his beautiful gallery and meet Tuong, they are meeting not only the designer but also the custom jewelry maker. Many cus-

tom jewelry stores have a separate designer and bench jeweler; Tuong, on the other hand, is both. This is huge! Completely eliminating any chance of miscommunication between the jewelry maker and designer, Tuong is there throughout the entire process, which means he finishes each piece ex-

actly the way it was envisioned. “Many people come in with an idea, maybe even a picture of what they want created but never know exactly what it is they want,” says Tuong. “Sometimes it is hard for them to explain what they want and turn their ideas into an actual piece

of jewelry. Working together with them, I take their ideas and make them a reality. I will ask questions to get to know them to help create something perfect for their personality and lifestyle. No two pieces of jewelry are ever the same. Each is unique to that client.” Tuong works with a highly advanced CAD software system called “Matrix.” With this software, he can show his clients 3D images of exactly what their customized piece is going

to look like before he creates it. This ensures that you will get exactly what you want every time! The rings and customized pendants that my wife and I saw inside his gallery on our visit had both of our jaws dropping and I’m quite sure I know exactly what she will be asking for when her birthday comes in a few months. The great thing about Tess Fine Jewelry is even though you get a custom created piece designed especially for you by a true artist, you don’t pay the custom price. I was surprised to find that for the quality of metal and stones, his prices are comparable to

The Persingers were first neighbors of the Farrells and then customers. Chatting one day, Tom mentioned wanting to do something with the blank canvas of his and Jill’s vast front

Taste the Difference in Quality at Carrollwood Café and Deli! By Alexis Selby From fresh homemade soups and hand crafted salads to gourmet loaded hot dogs and mouth watering sandwiches loaded with meat, you better come with an appetite when you dine at Carrollwood Café & Deli! Serving only the finest-quality meats, which are slow roasted to perfection with no added preservatives or fillers, Carrollwood Café & Deli is definitely not your average sandwich shop. They don’t use plain old sandwich meat; they use the real thing! “Our turkey is real turkey, the same thing you would eat on Thanksgiving,” says owner Stephena Pierre, who runs Carrollwood Café & Deli alongside her husband Webster. “Our corned beef is an actual brisket that we slow cook and let rest for 24 hours before serving to really enhance the flavor, and we make our bread fresh daily.” All of their soups are homemade as well, and are a huge hit at the Deli. The customers at Carrollwood Deli really appreciate the love and care that Stephena and Webster put into

their food; there is a reason why they keep coming back time and time again. “This is the best deli on many levels,” writes one customer. “I always return for the delicious sandwiches; the wonderful homemade breads, tasty pastrami, corned beef, and chicken and tuna salads are amazing. Wait until you try their homemade soups! My favorite is their chunky tomato with chickpeas! They offer many choices, none will disappoint. They did a wonderful catering job as well. It is definitely worth the 40 minute drive for me!” Taking over ownership of the Deli two years ago, Stephena and Webster have kept the tradition of Carrollwood Café & Deli running strong, offering the same delicious sandwiches that have been a staple in the community for the past 18 years and creating new staples for generations to come! “Our #1 priority when taking over ownership was making sure the transition was seamless – from the quality of our food to the level of our service,” says Stephena. “In the past two years we have gotten to know a

vast majority of our customers; it’s like a Cheers feeling when you come in. We already know who you are and what you want to order. We enjoy developing those relationships with our customers and getting to know them on a personal level.” Taking a glance over their menu, you are sure to be impressed by the selection. Catering (R) makes up a huge part of Carrollwood Cafe & Deli’s business; they do a fabulous job catering events of all sizes! ish rye, this sandwich is mouth-wateringly amazing! The flavors of this sandwich are impeccable, and the yummy Thousand Island dressing is the perfect addition to the warm corned beef. Not to mention, the crunchy Jewish Rye which it was served on was so fresh – you could tell it had just come out of the oven! The perfect choice for summer, their Triple D dog, which is a spin on their famous Deli Dog, is loaded with awesomeness. Featuring a Nathan hot-

dog – which if you haven’t had one of these before you are missing out – topped with warm corned beef, pastrami, coleslaw, and Thousand Island dressing. Believe me when I say, it is 100% as amazing as it sounds! The ingredients literally melt in your mouth. A favorite at Carrollwood Café & Deli, the corned beef sandwich is by far one of the best I have ever eaten. Piled so high with meat, the only problem was trying to figure out how to take the first. But, once I got the

“RAYS UP For Our Community” Energizing Tampa Bay with the Magic of Rays Baseball! By Katelyn Thomas There are many reasons we love our Tampa Bay Rays! Of course, there are the games, where every inning has its white-knuckled, yell-outloud moments and the breaks are filled with laugh-out-loud antics that keep the live audience participating. There is no doubt, as you watch them heat up the diamond, that the Rays players have their heads and their hearts in the game. Furthermore, they have put their hearts into the Tampa Bay community and have put their heads together to make a real difference for the people living here. Spanning the organization from the players to the management, the Tampa Bay Rays make it their team

mission to stay active, both on and off the diamond. The Rays organization is much more than entertainment and finely tuned athleticism – though we do love that! From the players and their families to the corporate employees, the Rays are dedicated to making a difference in the community. One way that the Rays have been a positive force in Tampa Bay is through the Rays Baseball Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that supports youth education development. The Tampa Bay Rays and their support team continually pitch in to help families and individuals in our community through charities, volunteer programs and partnership affiliates.

This Summer: RAYS UP For Our Community! Most recently, the Rays created a new campaign called “RAYS UP for Our Community.” Launched on June 1st and lasting until September 20th, the “RAYS UP for Our Community” campaign focuses on four key areas – Kids, Heroes, Health and Education. Additionally, every game during each two-week campaign flight will highlight a partner agency “Everyday MVP” on the telecast and social media. The four key areas of focus each have a Rays team ambassador, including pitchers Chris Archer and Matt Moore, manager Kevin Cash and infielder Evan Longoria. Each campaign has a deep personal meaning for them.

Tampa Bay Rays president Brian Auld says, “We enter the 10th year of Stu Sternberg’s ownership with a renewed focus on our mission to energize our community through the magic of Rays baseball. The ‘RAYS UP For Our Community’ campaign celebrates our community partners and helps share their successes with a wider audience.” Rays pitcher Chris Archer “threw out the first pitch” on the new campaign with RAYS UP for Kids on June 1st. Archer dedicates his time and support to programs that focus on kids in the communities of Tampa Bay, and he is a mentor and advocate for children. As part of RAYS UP for Kids, each of the 5,600 students who celebrated their graduation at Tropicana Field received vouchers for four

Rays Infielder Evan Longoria sponsors “Reading with the Rays” and is the Rays Ambassador for RAYS UP for Education tickets to any Rays game in the homestand from June 9th –16th. Matt Moore heads up the RAYS UP for Heroes campaign from June 29th to July 12th. Matt chose RAYS UP for Our Heroes, stating, “Baseball is our national pastime but we wouldn’t be able to enjoy it without the great men and women who protect us. I grew up on an Air Force base so I know firsthand that American heroes, like my dad, sacrifice every day to keep us safe. Your Tampa Bay Rays are committed to energizing our community through the magic of Rays’ baseball and supporting those who give so much for our freedom. Join us as we rally our community around active duty military, Veterans, first responders and their families.” RAYS UP for Heroes highlights the “Everyday MVPs” in our community to thank them for their service and dedication to the safety of our community. For the period of August 2–16, the “RAYS UP for Our Community” campaign switches to Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash’s focus, RAYS UP for Health. Cash and the Rays or-

ganization is inspired to promote health within the community and give thanks to healthcare professionals in the Tampa Bay area. With his daughter born with a congenital heart condition, Kevin Cash has experienced that we have another sector of heroes in Tampa Bay – the ones who look after our health. Cash will be working with Rays’ partners to raise awareness for health in our community with RAYS UP for Health! Rays ambassador Evan Longoria will RAYS UP for Education. The RAYS UP for Education part of the RAYS UP for Our Community campaign will last from September 7th until September 20th. Since 2006, the Rays Baseball Foundation has teamed with the Tampa Bay Times to promote “Reading with the Rays–– Read Your Way to the Ball Park,” made possible through a partnership with public library systems. Evan Longoria sponsors “Reading with the Rays,” which, because of his sponsorship, has grown to nine counties with more than 20,000 children participating annually. Ralph Zuckerman, owner of Old McMicky’s Farm in Odessa, wrote to Neighborhood News & Lifestyles to say thank you for help in publicizing the Child Adoption Education Day (CAED) held on June 13, and to let us know that the event was attended by 450 people! Zuckerman says, “We are

all glad and proud to say that the Child Adoption Education Day was a huge success. All of the agencies and groups that participated are certain that this event will directly lead to finding more Forever Families for our local children in the foster care system.” Zuckerman adds that 610 people registered for the CAED event and that 1,400 people visited the CAED webpage. “Which means,” says Zuckerman, “Eckerd Community Alternatives will continue to receive contacts of interest after the event. From all of our research, this was the largest Child Adoption Education event in the nation. We also hope that the Child Adoption Education Day was able to play a small part to inspire and reinforce all of the great and dedicated work done by all of the agencies and groups serving our community’s children.” Old McMicky’s Farm is putting together a video of the day’s highlights and we will let you know how to access it when available. We watched a short section featuring 17-year-old Jabari’s speech about his wait for a Forever Family, and consider it a heartwarming “must-see” video! Our team at here at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles fell in love with Jabari’s spirit. “I always knew there was some family out there

looking for me,” Jabari said. “I’ve been patient; waiting for them to find me. And a couple of months ago they actually found me…and we’re doing good.” Jabari found his Forever Family at an Adoption Match Day that was held at Old McMicky’s Farm in April. Neighborhood News & Lifestyles will continue to bring you news about future child adoption information events. There is a great need locally for people willing to make a difference in the lives of foster children – from volunteers with Florida’s Guardian ad Litem program, to foster parents and

Sandy and Shi, originally from Suriname and China, respectively, have always had a passion for education. In fact, both Sandy and Shi moved to the United States in pursuit of quality education when they were teenagers. For Sandy, her move meant access to highquality education that was not readily available in her home country, while Shi’s move to the U.S. allowed him the opportunity to further his education. They would both later go on to earn bachelor’s degrees from Florida Atlantic University and master’s degrees from the University of Central Florida. Sandy earned her bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and master’s in industrial engineering, while Shi earned a dual bachelor’s degree in finance and management information systems and master’s in business administration.
