Happy Halloween New Tampa! Halloween is one of those holiday’s that doesn’t hold much significance as far as what it stands for these days. Originally a contraction of All Hallows Eve celebrated by a number of countries to remember their deceased love ones, this day includes a theme of fun and humor to confront the power of death. I understand that some people out there may still believe it’s a pagan tradition, but what Halloween is really about in 2015 America is getting the chance to be someone or something you’re not for the night. Little girls tend to gravitate towards princesses or witches, and little boys always seem to be superheroes or monsters. My wife and I don’t have kids yet (although with each passing year it’s tougher to hold her off) but for at least the past 6 years we’ve joined my young cousins trick or treating. We love walking around with them, watching their little faces light up with excitement after they

score a handful of candy from each house….well almost each house, there’s always at least one home in every neighborhood that only allows one piece of candy per kid and when I say candy I mean that Werthers hard candy that no kid likes anyway. You know what I’m talking about, that stuff grandma used to keep on the coffee table that you tried once and never ate again! The neighborhood haunted houses are also a lot of fun and almost every New Tampa neighborhood has at least one guy on the block that has decided to dedicate the entire month of October to transforming his home garage into the perfect scare zone! Many families will drive into our neighborhoods from outside areas just to experience these fun little haunted houses. Once a good one is found, it’s not long before a bunch of new faces start to pour in. Halloween may just be a silly ex-

It makes for excellent family time, pictures that will be remembered and cherished forever (just look at our little scooby doo’s on the

Communication Corner and More!, Inc – Empower. Bloom. Succeed. Without the proper intervention and assistance, your child’s academic, emotional and social success may be at risk. Instead of just going through the motions hoping your child will improve on their own, why not seek help from the experienced professionals at Communication Corner and More! Offering a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic services for children, adolescents, and some adults, Communication Corner and More! provides comprehensive Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy services. In addition, they offer tutoring services for Reading, Writing and Math as well as Psychoeducational Evaluations. “Staffed by experienced, certified and licensed therapists as well as master's level teachers, we specialize in providing individualized evaluations and developing treatment plans designed to meet the needs of individuals and their families,” says owner and Speech-Language Pathologist, Jill M. Vought, M.S., CCC/SLP. Jill has always had a passion for kids. With over 20 years of experience working with children, she has the

knowledge and skills to help your child succeed. Following her dream, Jill founded Communication Corner in 2007, and has made it her mission to help children and families, one therapy session at a time. Providing a very comfortable, welcoming setting where children can come to learn and have fun, Communication Corner is an exceptional place that allows children to reach their full potential! “I absolutely love children and I really enjoy helping and supporting the

families,” says Jill. “We offer an individualized, caring environment that is intended to feel like home. For example, when kids come in to our office we encourage them to take off their shoes and play. When it comes to their therapy sessions we give each child one-on-one attention and create a unique treatment plan geared toward their individual needs. We also offer some small group classes, which are small enough that each child receives the attention they deserve to succeed.”

Communication Corner offers a variety of advanced techniques to better serve their patients, including: Interactive Metronome, Listening Therapy, Lindamood Bell Learning Processes, Smart Palate Technology and Myofunctional Therapy. Through these therapy programs and intervention strategies, they are able to treat a variety of developmental disorders such as Apraxia/Dyspraxia, Sensory Processing, Receptive/Expressive Language, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Voice, Stuttering, Swallowing, Feeding and Autism Spectrum Disorders. “I knew from the first time I took Jaxon to Communication Corner and More! that this is a place that really cares about kids,” writes mom Erica. “Jaxon had high anxiety at the time and wouldn't get out of the car so they came out to the car and did the evaluation there. Everyone there is amazing with kids. Jaxon has come a long way since he has started his therapy and couldn't have done it without the help of everyone at Communication Corner and More!” Jill stresses the importance of seeking therapy for your child as early as possible. She says, “Early intervention

We can decrease and possibly prevent the need for special education and related services once a child reaches school-age.” Jill added, “Working together with both the family and the child is imperative to success. Families are involved every step of the way, being shown how to use newly learned skills in their home and/or school environments. As a team, the therapists create a treatment plan that best fits your child’s individual needs and will work with both you and your child to implement the plan to help ensure optimal results.” Communication Corner also offers school support services to families that are trying to obtain an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or currently have one in place. Their therapists will even attend your child's meeting, and provide classroom suggestions, standardized assessment information and more. Communication Corner works

with children of all ages, from very young infants, including newborns, all the way up to young adults – around 21 years old. You’re probably wondering – why would a newborn need a therapist? Many people don’t realize that speech pathology involves so much more than teaching a child how to pronounce and say words and sounds. In fact, a huge part of speech pathology involves swallowing and feeding disorders. “Speech-Language Pathologists are specialists in swallowing and feeding disorders,” says Jill. Occupational Therapists work with infants for feeding disorders as well, in addition to self-regulation. Furthermore, many infants are born with Torticollis, a condition that inhibits flexion, extension or twisting of the muscles in the neck. A physical therapist should be pursued in this scenario. Jill is proud to announce her newest expansion with a second location! This location should open the be-

Cigar City Brewpub – Food, Fun & Beer ! By now, I’m sure you've had a chance to enjoy Cigar City BrewPub. Opening its doors in April 2013, Cigar City Brewpub was created with the simple goal of giving Tampa great food to go with great beer. The menu is a little Cuban, a little southern, a little Italian and all Tampa. It’s a hip, welcoming and casual environment to enjoy a good time with friends and family. Since our last article about CCBP, some changes have happened and they’re for the better. Changes in the kitchen have resulted in a more consistent quality and better value from the dishes. “We are still sourcing as much produce, beef and seafood as we can locally, and continue to offer only the highest quality hormone-free and grass fed meats, as well as fresh calamari from Rhode Island and shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico,” says General Manager Russell Simons. Recently revising the Brunch menu to offer a wider variety of choices for guests, Chef Gerry serves up a variety of delicious new options, as well as some classic dishes like the

crab cake Benedict and the option to build your own omelet. This brunch is epic! The chef and brewer work hand in hand to help combine their talents for each guest’s benefit. Gerry says, “We even use beer brewed here in some of the sauces and dishes on the menu. The signature salad dressing

uses a farmhouse saison beer from the brewery called Guava Grove, and the pancakes from brunch use a little of the Cacique porter. A must try is the flowerless Hunahpu cake with Maduro brown ale and chilies.” Walking into Cigar City Brewpub, you can’t help but notice the in-

novative décor, almost all of which has been “up-cycled” from their brewery. From their fixtures made from brewery barrels, to the beer cans around the lights to their built in bar, which is also made out of cans, this eco-friendly Brewpub brings a little bit of the brewery to you; even the tables are up-cycled, made from re-used pallets and old brewery equipment. Getting past the décor, one can hardly miss the huge brewery canisters, which are not so conspicuously hidden in the corner of the bar area, where Head Brewer Matt Tucker brews up some amazing creations! Matt has recently won a Gold medal for the Cacique Porter brewed here in the U.S. Beer Open Championship 2015 and a Bronze medal for the Chocolate Stout named Popol Vuh in the same competition. In 2013, his Vienna Lager won the Gold Medal as Best of show in the Best Florida Beer Championship. Looking for a recommendation on food? As tough as it is to just choose one dish, the smoked swordfish tacos are still my favorite at Cigar City Brewpub, boasting an aromatic distinction of Smokey goodness. From

The Sky Is The Limit At Corbett Preparatory School Of IDS Touring the Corbett Preparatory campus, I was in awe. Nestled amongst the Cypress trees on a beautiful lake and adjoining pond, the picturesque scenery reminded me of something straight out of a fairytale. Walking along the boardwalk, it was easy to see why this school is often referred to as “The Magic Kingdom.” Yet, as breathtaking as it is in the outside, what goes on inside is even more impressive. Founded by two moms with a dream, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS, previously named Independent Day School, raises the bar for the future of education, going far beyond the basic fundamentals of teaching and preparing their students not only how to succeed in the classroom, but more importantly – how to succeed in life. Their teaching methods are exemplary, which are a reflection of their teachers, who are by far some of the best in the nation. “Every child and every family is different,” says Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman, the Headmaster at Corbett Prep. “We pride ourselves on providing our students with individualized instruction and the opportunity to interact with

others in positive ways. What we are is an engaging preparation for life – each and every day.” Upholding a superior level of excellence in regards to student education, the teachers at Corbett Prep believe every child is gifted in his or her own way, and thus have a unique curriculum, specially designed to showcase each student’s independent skills and attributes. In addition to weekly and monthly trainings, every teacher at Corbett Prep is endorsed in gifted education through a master’s level grant with the University of South Florida’s Department of Education and the entire faculty has recently completed Harvard Graduate education classes. Dr. Swarzman emphasizes the importance of continuous education. She says, “To be a teacher means to be a life long learner.” Corbett Prep teacher Mr. Scott, says, “As teachers, we receive a great foundation in education. We are continually being educated and learning new things. The pressure of the Olympic mentality is big; we are always looking for areas to improve, to be the best that we can be. We are very fortunate to have positive attitudes among our staff and great support from our faculty.”

Corbett Preparatory School of IDS was founded upon a strong set of principals and values and there are seven common characteristics, known as the A+ Action Approach to Leadership and Change, that have shaped its existence; each of these components have gone beyond words and ideas, translating into action and steps that have propelled the school forward over the years.

Model the Models – “At Corbett Prep, our teachers use research-based and best-practice knowledge on how students can learn best and with the most joy,” says Karen Vaughan, Public Relations Coordinator at Corbett Preparatory School of IDS. Proceed Purposefully – Everything you do, do with purpose. “Every child deserves a teacher of the year,” says Dr. Swarzman. “We train our teachers to be the teacher that they would want for

their own children.” Embrace a Vision- The goal at Corbett Prep is to create joy and make learning fun, and by encouraging students to embrace a vision and set attainable goals, the teachers are providing their students with a foundation for the future, instilling in them a valuable set of principals that they can carry with them through life. “We chal-

lenge our students to reach their highest potential and beyond,” adds Dr. Swarzman. “There are limitless opportunities for children and the excitement for teachers is figuring it out. The students learn to complete their work with quality– that is a requirement. When you learn to complete your work with quality you learn to develop pride in what you do and that is how you learn

a strong work ethic.” Build Leadership Capacity, Teams and Networks - Corbett Preparatory School of IDS is constantly networking with other universities and schools, working together to help each other achieve their goals. Adopt “Presence” – Adopt presence – a presence of pride in your profession, presence that shows passion for your work and a presence that shows purpose. Develop a Lifelong Learning Mentality – At Corbett Prep they believe that there is always opportunity for growth and continued progress and thus, have adopted the Olympic Mentality; the mentality of the best always looking for ways to be better. The teachers have a commitment to perpetual and constant learning and are always looking for areas in which they can grow and improve. Dr. Swarzman says, “We are in the business of educating students to be the best that they can be and to do that you have to work with teachers who are willing to do the same.” Persevere and Persist – To Maintain purpose and remain persistent, despite adversity or difficulty, and never give up on your dreams.

What The Students Have to Say: On my previous visit I had the pleasure of meeting a variety of different students, ranging in age from 1st graders to 8th graders; their excitement for learning was obvious. When asked how you treat people, each student happily responded, “with dignity and respect.” 6th grade student Emma says, “Everybody is really nice and the teachers are fun. I like the open campus and all the afterschool activities. I take private piano lessons and dance. In Spanish, if you are lucky and you speak Spanish well, when exchange students come from Madrid you get to host them for 3 weeks.” What Emma is referring to is the International Exchange program at Corbett Prep. This past year Emma’s

family hosted a student from Madrid, who was accompanied by one of her teachers. The teachers visit Corbett to learn about the curriculum and teaching methods in order to bring back the knowledge they have learned to help their schools. This summer Emma’s family will be hosting another exchange student from China. Taylor, another 6th grade student, says, “This school is not like any other school. It is special and different in its own unique way. There are a lot of activities. The games are educational, but fun, allowing us to learn in an exciting way.” “We are very real with our students, therefore we expect them to be real with us,” says Dr. Swarzman. We expect them to be positive, purposeful and passionate about what they do and what they learn.” Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS (formerly Independent Day School Corbett Campus) is a fully accredited, nonsectarian private school located in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood.
