thinkTank Virtual Learning Center Supports Your Child in Learning Through Tutoring and Educational Support By Marcy Sanford Located at 5512 Lutz Lake Fern Road, thinkTank Virtual Learning Center is unlike anything in the area – a stress-free, relaxed, supportive environment where middle and high school students can get one-on-one help from on-site teachers and tutors who really care about how your child learns. Whether your child would benefit from an alternative to traditional school, needs to make up a credit, or needs tutoring, thinkTank Virtual

Learning Center provides the keys to maximize your child’s success while allowing them to work and collaborate with their friends and peers in a cozy, comfortable home-like atmosphere. The brainchild of local resident and business owner Carleen DeGolyer, thinkTank Virtual Learning Center came about after a stressful time in her child’s education. Two years ago, Carleen’s son was

having a very bad experience at a local middle school and she was not getting any help from the teachers or adminis-

tration. He enjoyed playing sports after school but there was so much homework that he had to spend any free time outside of school or practice working on school assignments. The family didn’t have any time to spend together and enjoy each other’s company. The stress was getting to everyone. “Sixth grade was awful for my son,” says Carleen. “We had high hopes for 7th grade and it started off great but after 20 days, they changed See “thinkTank” on pg. 22

RELIEF FUND ESTABLISHED FOR PASCO FLOOD VICTIMS United Way of Pasco County has established a relief fund to help local flood victims. Due to recent flooding, more than 61 homes have been severely impacted including low and moderate income residents and elderly families. Repair and recovery expenses may push many of these residents beyond their financial capacity. One hundred percent of donated funds will be used to assist victims and no administrative funds will be used by United Way or its partners. Duke Energy through their Florida Foundation Council has provided United Way of Pasco County a $10,000 grant to begin the fund and get recovery work underway. Duke Energy will also be assisting by providing volunteers in the field to help flood victims. “Duke Energy is grateful for the work United Way Pasco has planned to respond to the needs of citizens in Pasco County who have been impacted by flooding,” said Alex Glenn, Duke Energy Florida state president, “We are proud to provide this grant to help with the efforts.” United Way of Pasco County is

Team Farrell truly does it all and is proud to be accredited with the Better Business Bureau and advertises its rave reviews from Angie’s List and Home Advisor. Already well-known throughout Tampa Bay for stellar service as a roofing, building and remodeling contractor and as a home maintenance and service provider with Farrell Roofing and Farrell Home Services, the growing Port Richey based company has recently added more professional members to its team and new service companies including: Farrell Carpet and Tile Cleaning, Farrell Outdoor Services and Farrell Air Conditioning, as well as Ms. Twister, which focuses on providing residential and commercial cleaning services. More recently, Tom and Jill Persinger joined Team Farrell. The Persingers were first neighbors of the Farrells and then customers. Chatting one day, Tom mentioned wanting to do something with the blank canvas of his and Jill’s vast front yard. He had the right neighbor in Farrell! “I’ve got a team of people,” said Steve. With Team Farrell on the job, the Persinger’s yard now features a man-made pond, fountains, and a stone bridge perfect for hanging out with the neighbors! Jill and Tom both had career backgrounds that were a good fit for the services that the Farrell companies wanted to add. Jill is a Florida State University graduate with a degree in Marketing. After graduating, she immediately went to work in sales for a large commercial janitorial company. She worked her way up to the position of senior vice president with the company. Now, Jill is co-owner with Tina Farrell of Farrell Carpet and Tile Cleaning, and she is one of the owners of Ms. Twister, along with her husband Tom, Tina Farrell, and Sophie Anastassiou. Tom Persinger knows a lot about managing teams to provide great service. His background includes being VP of Operations for 38 school

districts in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, before becoming COO of Atlanta-based One Source Facility Services. Steve Farrell and Tom Persinger are partners in Farrell Air Conditioning. Team Farrell not only is committed to providing for every home maintenance need of its customers; the company is committed to building a better community. Farrell Home Services and its sister companies support more than 40 Tampa Bay Area charities. More than that, if you use Ms. Twister cleaning services for anything from a one-time cleaning to weekly or bi-weekly cleaning, you can feel good knowing that Ms. Twister donates a portion of its profits from every job to support local Pasco County breast cancer programs. Ms. Twister is currently installing a special program where they will offer free cleaning for patients who are undergoing breast cancer treatment. “RAYS UP For Our Community” Energizing Tampa Bay with the Magic of Rays Baseball! By Katelyn Thomas There are many reasons we love our Tampa Bay Rays! Of course, there are the games, where every inning has its white-knuckled, yellout-loud moments and the breaks are filled with laugh-out-loud antics that keep the live audience participating. There is no doubt, as you watch them heat up the diamond, that the Rays players have their heads and their hearts in the game. Furthermore, they have put their hearts into the Tampa Bay community and have put their heads together to make a real difference for the people living here. Spanning the organization from the players to the management, the Tampa Bay Rays make it their team mission to stay active, both on and off the diamond. The Rays organization is much more than entertainment and finely tuned athleticism –

14

though we do love that! From the players and their families to the corporate employees, the Rays are dedicated to making a difference in the community. One way that the Rays have been a positive force in Tampa Bay is through the Rays Baseball Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that supports youth education development. The Tampa Bay Rays and their support team continually pitch in to help families and individuals in our community through charities, volunteer programs and partnership affiliates. This Summer: RAYS UP For Our Community! Most recently, the Rays created a new campaign called “RAYS UP for Our Community.” Launched on June 1st and lasting until September 20th, the “RAYS UP for Our

Community” campaign focuses on four key areas – Kids, Heroes, Health and Education. Additionally, every game during each two-week campaign flight will highlight a partner agency “Everyday MVP” on the telecast and social media. The four key areas of focus each have a Rays team ambassador, including pitchers Chris Archer and Matt Moore, manager Kevin Cash and infielder Evan Longoria. Each campaign has a deep personal meaning for them. Tampa Bay Rays president Brian Auld says, “We enter the 10th year of Stu Sternberg’s ownership with a renewed focus on our mission to energize our community through the magic of Rays baseball. The ‘RAYS UP For Our Community’ campaign celebrates our community partners and helps share their successes with a wider audience.” Rays pitcher Chris Archer

“threw out the first pitch” on the new campaign with RAYS UP for Kids on June 1st. Archer dedicates his time and support to programs that focus on kids in the communities of Tampa Bay, and he is a mentor and advocate for children. As part of RAYS UP for Kids, each of the 5,600 students who celebrated their graduation at Tropicana Field received vouchers for four tickets to any Rays game in the homestand from June 9th –16th. Matt Moore heads up the RAYS UP for Heroes campaign from June 29th to July 12th. Matt chose RAYS UP for Our Heroes, stating, “Baseball is our national pastime but we wouldn’t be able to enjoy it without the great men and women who protect us. I grew up on an Air Force base so I know firsthand that American heroes, like my dad, sacrifice every day to keep us safe. Your Tampa Bay Rays are committed to

to the safety of our community. For the period of August 2–16, the “RAYS UP for Our Community” campaign switches to Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash’s focus, RAYS UP for Health. Cash and the Rays organization is inspired to promote health within the community and give thanks to healthcare professionals in the Tampa Bay area. With

his daughter born with a congenital heart condition, Kevin Cash has experienced that we have another sector of heroes in Tampa Bay – the ones who look after our health. Cash will be working with Rays’ partners to raise awareness for health in our community with RAYS UP for Health! Rays ambassador Evan Longoria will RAYS UP for Education. The RAYS UP for Education part of the RAYS UP for Our Community campaign will last from September 7th until September 20th. Since 2006, the Rays Baseball Foundation has teamed with the Tampa Bay Times to promote “Reading with the Rays––Read Your Way to the Ball Park,” made possible through a partnership with public library systems. Evan Longoria sponsors “Reading with the Rays,” which, because of his sponsorship, has grown to nine counties with more than 20,000 children participating annually. He is passionate about supporting children’s education and continues to find ways to make “Reading with the Rays” excel. Evan Longoria and the Rays received the Outstanding

Business Partner of the Year from the Florida Literacy Coalition and will receive the 2015 Friend of Newspaper in Education Award from the Florida Press Education Services on July 23rd. Longoria’s dedication to education is outstanding.

How Do You RAYS UP? So, the question is, “How Do You RAYS UP?” The Rays want to hear from you! There are “Everyday MVPs” of all ages in Tampa Bay who set out to make a difference for others, and the Rays want to hear your stories. All summer long, fans are encouraged to submit stories answering the question, “How do YOU Rays Up?” If you are an “Everyday MVP” then join the big leagues and tell the Rays what you are doing to make a difference in Tampa Bay. Mercy shared that the butterfly has a double meaning. “The butterfly represents angels and the coming out of our cocoons

in order to help others and to be a conduit for good.” Divine Connections Massage & Spa is a great destination for both healing massage and a youthful glow! Maggie and Mercy’s mutual desire to help others heal through massage is heartfelt, and Maggie also loves to help keep her clients achieve amazing skin! Forty-three and not a wrinkle to be seen, she lights up when she talks about the amazing benefits of her aesthetician services that include a variety of facials, microdermabrasion, micro-current, micro-needling, TCA peels, waxing, eyebrow and eyelash tinting and more. Maggie stresses that she and Mercy, as well as Divine Connections’ other LMTs, Shaye Moon and Rudy Ramirez Delgado (who also is their nephew and a BMX professional), are “medical grade therapeutic massage therapists” and that the massages at Divine Connections Massage & Spa are focused on healing. There are many modalities offered including: Swedish,

Mercy’s smile radiated as she demonstrated her technique on my forearm and triumphed over a trigger point that released. “Instant gratification,” she called it. Maggie and Mercy have helped clients get relief from conditions such as sciatic and peroneal nerve pain, plantar fasciitis, frozen shoulder, thoracic outlet syndrome and more. Maggie has been an LMT for six years and three years ago when Mercy decided to go to school to get her massage therapy license, Maggie decided to pursue another dream and

TCBY –– Cool Treats for Hot Days By Dara Tucker Nearly four summers ago Trinity became home to the first TCBY SelfServe on the West Coast of Florida. Owners Patti and Jay Silar opened the store with their daughter Jenifer SilarMills, who is the store’s marketing manager. The idea of opening the Trinity location came quickly to Patti and Jay when they visited a TCBY Self-Serve store in Charlotte, North Carolina. The amazing taste makes it hard to believe the frozen yogurt is 96, 98 or 100 percent fat free. The couple knew it was a great business to bring back home to Trinity, where our hot days make cool treats even more scrumptious. TCBY, also known as “The Country’s Best Yogurt,” originally opened in 1981, and is the oldest frozen yogurt company in the United States. The company has high health and quality standards that appeal to Patti Silar who is a retired RN. Patti says, “TCBY takes pains to purchase products that are high quality. Fruit is sanitized to meet TCBY requirements, and we don’t use frozen fruit because it turns to mush on your yogurt. Our fruit are

18

in their own juices instead of syrup.” Jay Silar adds, “Our yogurts are kosher and Halal certified. We want to meet our customers’ needs.” TCBY’s yogurt is delicious, smooth and creamy. The possibilities of flavor combinations and toppings seem endless, but you many not have known it has great nutritional value, too. TCBY has super frozen yogurts (Super Fro-Yo), which is a new classification of frozen yogurt that sets a high standard for nutrition within the frozen yogurt industry. To qualify as a Super Fro-Yo, TCBY’s frozen yogurts meet or exceed (based on a four oz., half-cup serving) having at least three grams of fiber, seven types of live and active cultures, four grams of protein, and 20 percent daily value of vitamin D and calcium. The fiber and probiotics in TCBY yogurt help you feel satisfied and aid your body in digestion, boosting your general health. Vitamin D and calcium are also essential for bone and muscle health. The protein in TCBY yogurt contains amino acids that help proper muscle maintenance. Eating healthy has never tasted so good! Summer Martin truly values hav-

TCBY’s friendly employees are always available to help you with a sample ing healthy dessert options. She says, “We love the Trinity TCBY. Our daughter has insulin resistance and it is hard to find a low sugar option for dessert. TCBY always carries a no sugar added flavor and would let us know when it arrived. The staff at TCBY is so friendly and treated us like their extended family. When it came time for my daughter’s birthday she

couldn’t imagine having it anywhere else than at TCBY and several of the staff were there to wish her a Happy Birthday. When we found out that we were moving to a different town, the staff got together to say goodbye and even gave us a going away card! They always went above-and-beyond to offer great customer service. We love our Trinity TCBY!”

Trinity’s TCBY is bright and fun, with a textured wall that changes colors. Between the music, bright colors, and cheerful staff, Patti, Jay and Jenifer have created an atmosphere that’s perfect for enjoying a treat. Unsure which of the ten flavors you should try? Don’t worry! An employee is happy to give you a sample. You don’t need to decide on just one flavor either. You can fill your 16 or 25 oz. cup with as little or as much as the cup can hold. Bananas are available to turn your frozen yogurt into a banana split. If

you don’t like your flavors mixing, cup dividers can be used to separate them. The ten available flavors rotate or change periodically, but there is always a no-sugar-added option and a nonmilk based option. For example, Silk™ Coconut Milk and Silk™ Chocolate Almond Milk are the current nondairy options available. In the upcoming months additional frozen yogurt flavors TCBY will be carrying include English Toffee, Blueberry, Chocolate Chip Mint and Apricot. After you dispense your frozen yogurt, head over to the topping bar, which has over 45 different toppings to choose from, including fresh fruit and crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. There are plenty of kids’ favorites such as gummies and candy chocolate rocks. You can top it off with hot chocolate fudge or warm walnuts in a caramel sauce. It’s possible to come to TCBY every day of the month, and never put together a repeat combination of yogurt and toppings! Jay, Patti, and Jenifer are involved in several community projects and fundraisers including Taste of Trinity and Long Leaf Fall Festival. As active members of our community, you’ll spot the TCBY “car” around town, and at places such as the New Port Richey and Tarpon Springs Christmas

Parades. Jenifer also works with local non-for-profit groups for spirit nights. For a set number of hours, a portion of the proceeds made on a designated night goes back to the school or church as a fundraiser. It’s fun and delicious way to earn money for your non-for-profit group. TCBY provides the Trinity area with a scrumptious and healthy yogurt shop that is perfect for taking the kids for a treat, birthday celebration, date night, or to take a pint from their freezer home to enjoy. When you go, make sure to ask for a loyalty reward card that gives you 1 point for every

dollar you spend, and after 30 points you earn a $3 coupon. If you’re looking for gift that’s sure to be loved, purchase a TCBY gift card for any amount. TCBY of Trinity is located at 3140 Little Rd. in the Mitchell Ranch Plaza. During the summer months of June, July and August, TCBY Trinity’s hours are from noon–10 p.m., Monday – Friday. Call (727) 375-1177 for more information about spirit nights, and check out TCBY of Trinity’s Facebook page or website www.tcbytrinity.com for upcoming events and flavors.

“thinkTank” Continued from page 1 his entire schedule. The administration would not listen to me or even consider putting him back in some of his original classes. That day, I pulled him out of his school and enrolled him in Florida Virtual School. It was a great decision. The only thing lacking with the virtual classes was interaction with other students and the chance to collaborate with friends.” Carleen also found it challenging to help her son in the classes that weren’t her strongest subjects and overseeing and coordinating everything while also working full time to run her own business. So this mom and local business owner started looking for a place for her son, somewhere where he could get help from teachers and work with other students, and could not find anything like it anywhere close to the area. “I wanted a stress-free place where my son could get guidance and tutoring from experienced teachers and work on his school assignments. I was looking for a comfortable environment for him where he could learn in the way that works best for him and

have room to hang out with other kids.” Middle and high school students enrolled in Florida’s Virtual School program or home schooled will find that type of environment at thinkTank Virtual Learning Center. There are tables and chairs where students can gather to collaborate, but there also are comfy sofas where they can sit to complete their assignments. “Students can get up at any time to stretch their legs or walk around if they need a break while working on their assignments,” says Carleen. “We have a kitchen that is stocked with snacks and drinks and if they are hungry, they can get something to eat. I want this to feel like a second home to our students. We also have outdoor areas where they can take a break or work on assignments.” At thinkTank Virtual Learning Center, the ratio is one teacher for every four students so your child can get the individualized attention he or she needs. Once your child is enrolled in Florida Virtual School classes, you add thinkTank as a secondary contact and they will monitor your child’s progress and set up a pace chart for them to follow so assignments are completed on time, while making

sure your student understands the concepts and lessons. Florida Virtual School follows the same curriculum as Florida’s public schools and offers AP, honors, and college credit courses. With virtual school, the students are in charge of the pace of their education. “Your child can take classes at his or her own pace through Florida’s virtual school,” says Carleen. “Students who come in and begin working on their classes around 9 a.m. are

usually finished by 1 p.m., but we are open until 6 p.m. every evening so we can accommodate different students’ needs.” Carleen shares, “One of the best parts about the virtual school for our family is that my son is learning at a pace that works for him, and when he is finished with his assignments for the day, he is done with school for the day and we are able to enjoy more time together as a family without the stress

of homework or outside school assignments hanging over our heads.” Tutoring & Make-Up Credits: The experienced teachers at thinkTank Virtual Learning Center also offers tutoring and help if your child needs to retake a class or make up a credit. “If your child needs to retake a class to improve their GPA or because they don’t understand the concepts of the subject, they can take the class through the Florida Virtual School and we can provide extra support for them,” says Carleen. SAT/ACT Tutoring: “Currently we offer individual and small group classes for both the SAT and ACT,” says Carleen. “The classes are offered during the week and on weekends to accommodate all of our students’ schedules. The professor teaching our workshops has been tutoring for over 18 years and is very well versed in the

new SAT.” If you’ve found that traditional school is not working for your child or your child’s schedule is hectic with sports, dance or other activities, thinkTank Virtual Learning Center may be the answer. Imagine shorter school days, no homework, and weekends free. At thinkTank Virtual Learning Center, your child’s progress will be monitored daily with real communication between you and your child’s teacher. “Virtual school was a great choice for us,” says Carleen. “Not only did it improve my son’s education, it also improved our family life.” thinkTank Virtual Learning Center is located at 5512 Lutz Lake Fern Road and is open on Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, log on to www.thinktankvlc.com or call thinkTank at 813-803-3110.

“Physicians” Continued from page 1 Drs. Stephanie Eldridge, MD, MPH and Amir Shirmohammad, MD, MPH are a husband and wife team that knows what it’s like to have a busy family lifestyle. In fact, they have two lovely daughters and another one on the way! High school sweethearts, “Dr. Shirmo,” as most patients call him, and Dr. Eldridge met when they were just 17, and they’ve been together ever since. Both of them graduated Cum Laude from Tulane University in New Orleans where they majored in Cell and Molecular Biology. They went on to earn Master’s Degrees in Public Health and Epidemiology before earning their Medical Degrees, staying at Tulane the entire time. Serving Trinity and its surrounding areas since 2007, Dr. Shirmohammad and Dr. Eldridge have already met their goal of creating a new kind of medical practice as Trinity Family Physicians is one that certainly stands out from the rest in its dedication, commitment and follow-through.

26

Taking Time With Patients is Important Most of us do not enjoy going to the doctor. We want it to be quick and painless. We want the drive-through version of anything that’s not pleasant these days. However, if you go to a “drive-through” service for health care, where the goal is to get as many patients rotated through the door as possible, you’re going to just be a number. Trinity Family Physicians is the opposite of drive-through care. That’s not to say that they aren’t timely, or that they don’t value their patients’ time, because they do, but their commitment to each patient is something that has more value, and that’s something I’m willing to wait for. I know that when it’s my turn,

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 • www.NNLFlorida.com

I’m not going to be turned away when I ask a question or voice a concern. I’m not going to be told to make another appointment. Each time I see a doctor at Trinity Family Physicians, I feel that I’m being listened to, and that my care is their utmost priority at that time. One patient admits to driving more than an hour to get to Trinity Family Physicians, saying, “I am willing to drive to see them no matter where I move, and I’m willing to wait because it’s not that often that you find a physician that offers that kind of care.” Dr. Shirmohammad says, “We offer our full attention to each of our patients, and we don’t want to be rushed. While we have a goal to have

each patient checked in and out within a certain amount of time, our true investment is in the time it takes for your health to be properly evaluated.” Another patient said, “They are the absolute best! My wife and I were both looking for ‘old fashioned’ doctors, the type we had when we were kids that would take time with you and seemed truly concerned for your health. Drs. Shirmo and Eldridge were exactly what we were looking for. They have been nothing short of fantastic in helping both of us through our health issues the last several years.” A Knowledgeable Staff Ready to Assist! The Trinity Family Physicians staff is made up of a team of profes-

sionals that assist Drs. Shirmohammad and Eldridge. In fact, their front office staff is trained to have medical knowledge as they are on the front line, answering phones and talking to patients. “We don’t offer care over the phone,” explains Dr. Shirmohammad, “but we pride ourselves on having a staff that is aware of possible emergent life threatening conditions and it has saved patient’s lives, in all honesty.” He adds, “We try to see patients the same day or the next day when they’re sick, and if we’re here, we do what we can to see people right away. We also have an incredible support staff that allows us more availability. They are very well-trained and give excellent care.” Dr. Shirmohammad is referring to their highly qualified Physician Assistant Mrs. Kristina Reeves, PA-C, and Nurse Practitioner Mrs. Kyle Maldonado ARNP-C. Kristina and Kyle are always available to see patients, especially for that last minute, “I might need an antibiotic” kind of situation. Preventative, Communicative Care While the care at Trinity Family Physicians is all about the back-to-

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

basics, one-on-one approach, everything else is pretty state-of-the-art! For example, patients can now log into a patient portal to access medical records, request appointments or refills on medication, and even send questions to the doctors! All of their records are digital, which means they can send and receive records from other offices within minutes when necessary. They also send prescriptions to the pharmacy of your choice. Educating Patients to Stay Well Trinity Family Physicians and their staff are focused on helping their patients feel well and stay well, which means that education is one of their top priorities. As a result, the doctors and their staff often offer health seminars on specific topics such as diabetes, nutrition, supplements and weight loss. Weight loss is a popular topic at Trinity Family Physicians, and they’ve been helping lots of patients learn how to shed those pounds the right way, and keep them off. Dr. Shirmohammad explains, “We spend time getting to know our patients and we teach people how to eat properly, and we’re helping people avoid taking unnecessary medicine by teaching them about

the many natural and herbal supplements that we have available.” Offering general vitamins for overall wellness, sleep aids, supplements for heart health, safe weight management, vision support and more, Trinity Family Physicians offers the NutraMetrix line of supplements and vitamins right there at their office. Patients love the convenience of being able to get natural health supplements at Trinity Family Physicians and rather than guessing what to buy at a store, they can get what their physician recommends. Another way that Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmohammad reach out to the community and patients with important tips and information is with Facebook. “Like” Trinity Family Physicians on their Facebook page because there, the doctors let people know if there’s a virus outbreak in the neighborhood, if the flu shots are available, and they also give helpful tools to incorporate wellness in general. Just recently, Drs. Shirmohammad and Eldridge created another way to involve themselves in a community where we have everyday heroes that they would like to recognize with their Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay

Making A Difference Award. The first recipient of the Award will be announced in the September issues of Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, along with information about how you can nominate someone for the ongoing Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award (winners chosen quarterly throughout the year). Using all of the tools that they can, Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmohammad strategize with their patients for overall health care, to help us meet the goals we have, and encourage us to live our healthiest lives. More than that, they provide personalized, professional care. I know that I can count on them when I need them, and I’m grateful to have found doctors like the ones at Trinity Family Physicians, so close to home. Trinity Family Physicians is located at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. at 1817 Cypress Brook Drive, Ste. 101 in Trinity.
