Community Support Continues for Family of Fallen Officer Charlie Kondek By Julie Kanehl In December of 2014, Tarpon Springs Police Officer, Charlie R. Kondek, was killed after being shot in the line of duty by a convicted felon during a routine response to a noise complaint. Since then, the community has come together beautifully to show support to his wife and their six children, making sure that they know that he will never be forgotten. Thousands of officers from our area attended his funeral, and while other issues take the front page, the family, friends and fellow officers of Officer Kondek remain deeply affected by his passing. Officer Kondek served 5 years with the NYPD before moving to Florida and joining the force in 1996. Serving our community for nearly twenty years, Officer Kondek was just 45 years-old when he was killed. On July 13th, an event was held

at Wentworth Golf Club to show support for the fallen officer’s family. Hosted by Mike Hills, Vice President of Business Development for Triton Insurance Group, the evening was filled with emotion. While Hills did his best to keep the mood light, everyone in attendance had heavy hearts for Kondek and the many other officers who have recently been senselessly killed while trying to protect their communities. Throughout the evening, the guests spoke to one another about their memories of the fallen officer and hero, many remarking that the time has gone by, but their memories of him have not faded. More than a host for the evening, Mike Hills is also Vice-Chairman and Founder of H.E.L.P. Now LLC, which is a local organization that acts as a vehicle to organize local businesses, individuals and other organizations who want to truly make an

impact on their community. The highlight of the evening was when Hills presented a $10,000 check to Teresa, Officer Kondek’s widow. Congratulations to East Lake Fire Rescue’s Commissioner McKone, Now a FASD Certified District Official Commissioner McKone has completed all training requirements for the Florida Association of Special Districts (FASD) Certified District Officials Program and is now a FASD Certified District Official. The commissioner is the first East Lake elected official to earn this certification. Commissioner McKone completed 25 required hours of training including Board Relations with District Manager and Staff, Strategic Planning and Election, Ethics, and Sunshine Law. After completing the required hours of training, the commissioner applied for the Certified District Official designation through the Certified District Managers Steering Committee
