By Matt Selby What if I told you the “good guys” from the “good ol’ days” still exist? We’re talking about the blue collar guys that treat you and your family as they would treat their own. At times, it seems like a thing of the past. If you spend five minutes online you’ll find negative reviews on many plumbing companies in the area. In today’s economy it’s tougher than ever to find honest, hard, fair work but we’ve found it. We found a company who will work hard for you and your family to fix any and all of your plumbing and/or septic problems. Most importantly, they’re a reputable and licensed company. I’m talking about Tampa Bay Plumbers! Owner Ryan Pelky demands excellence from everyone on his

team. “I take personal responsibility for every job no matter how big or small,” says Pelky. “This company obsesses over quality and our customer experience. I can promise you this…if you’re not happy with something we did for you, I will make it right. Go ahead and look them up next time you’re online and you’ll find glowing reviews from tons of satisfied local customers. You’ll find an Angie’s List Super Service Award, an almost 5 star review on Facebook (you can’t please everyone), an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau, and an almost 5-star rating on just about every review site on the net including google which they boast a 4.8 out of 5 rating! That’s no easy task especially when you have competitors constantly hiring other

people to fake bad reviews online. It’s a sad world we live in but it’s a reality that not enough people know about. I guess what I’m saying is, even if you don’t take my word for it, you can trust the reviews of countless more people. I put my trust for all my personal and business plumbing and septic needs in the hands of Tampa Bay Plumbers; in fact, one of my best friends in the world, Ryan Penna, plays a paramount role within the company as their production manager. I trust Ryan and after hearing him talk so

highly about the company he works for I knew I wouldn’t regret hiring them. Tampa Bay Plumbers will be working on a model home I’m building personally here in Tampa very soon. As Mr. Pelky says himself, there’s no job too big or too small. Sometimes the small stuff is the most inconvenient – leaky toilets, clogged drains (because your kids are brilliant and decided their toys wanted to go swimming in things they shouldn’t), garbage disposal repair, superficial leaks and bursts all the way through

Recently RE/MAX honored her with the RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award, which honors successful agents who have earned more than $1 million in commissions during their careers with the company. Less than 23% of all active RE/MAX agents worldwide have earned this prestigious award. “Amani Warden’s tireless dedication to serving her clients, consumers and community has allowed her to achieve this high honor,” said Susan Goiser, Vice President of the RE/MAX Florida Region. “Winning this award is a significant accomplishment and we’re extremely proud that Amani is a member of the RE/MAX

standing of our needs, and negotiating skills helped us through the offer, acceptance, and closing process,” said client Garrett C. “The most important thing when choosing a real estate professional is to find someone you can trust,” says Amani. “I have a history of success and integrity in real estate that my clients can depend on. I am an experienced negotiator with expert knowledge of the local market. My clients can count on me to always work with their best interests in mind and to represent them and their wishes to the best of my ability.” Even if you are buying a new home, it is a good idea to have someone looking out for your interests. When purchasing a new home, Amani recommends buyers consider the following: Are you paying a fair price for the lot premium? Will you get a good return on your investment if you have to sell unexpectedly? How much is too much to pay for upgrades? Which upgrades will yield a return on investment (when it comes time to sell) and which

Moffitt Cancer Center Volunteers Making a Difference! During his 32-year career with the cruise industry, Malcolm Weathers traveled all over the world and retirement isn’t slowing him down. He visited Denmark this year and Africa is on the horizon for 2017, but perhaps the most meaningful trip he makes, is the one he takes twice a week to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Weathers is often the first face patients see as they arrive for surgery and he’s the person family members rely on to stay updated during a loved one’s operation. Weathers is one of 700 volunteers who give their time at Moffitt. He’s been a volunteer since 2010 and earned the title of Volunteer of the Year in 2015. Weathers says, “Volunteering at Moffitt is special to me because I have a feel-good attitude when I leave. It inspires me because of the people I help. I see them and they’ll write me a note or they’ll send me a box of candy or cookies that they’ve made. I’ve gotten flowers. Because when they’re there for four or five, six hours it’s probably the most hectic time they’d ever spent in their life, waiting for the

12

results of the operation and then to see if their loved one is going to be okay. So you’re there to help them and that’s inspirational.” Weathers lost his father and several friends to cancer and feels volunteering at Moffitt is a way he can touch the lives of the patients. He has a lot of friends who volunteer with a variety of organizations to get out of the house for a few hours, but that’s not how Weathers views his volunteer duties at Moffitt. Instead, he looks forward to helping people and gaining inspiration from their strength. Weathers jokes that he sometimes walks 2 ½ - 3 miles on the days he volunteers. “At the end of the day you get in your car and you start to leave and you say, ‘I’m tired.’ It’s a good tired, if there is such a thing,” Weathers explains. “But, you feel like you’ve done something very rewarding and that’s what it’s all about with me it’s to take care of the people there, the patients.” Weathers estimates he’s touched hundreds of lives as a Moffitt volunteer. His motto is “never leave anyone

They started by giving homes to unwanted dogs and cats but about 12 years ago they had so many furry friends they had saved that they had outgrown their Carrollwood home. They moved to Odessa and discovered they had enough land to begin rescuing animals a bit more exotic than Fluffy and Fido. “Since we don’t have children, our animals are like children to us,” says Andy. “We have five acres at our home in Odessa and have been able to provide forever homes for many animals whose owners could no longer take care of them.” Over the past 12 years Andy and Brenda have taken in alpacas, zebras, and Scottish Highland Cattle. They have helped injured and abandoned foxes, raccoons, rabbits, and ducks. Today more than 60 animals are lucky enough to have found a home at Odessa Wildlife Refuge and Sanctuary. In 2015 the Kilnes began offering public tours of their sanctuary. If you’ve ever dreamed of petting or

LIADO, The Italian-American Women of Today, Provides Scholarships & Donates to Local Charities By Julie Kanehl LIADO, The Italian-American Women of Today, is a local group of women of Italian-American descent who come together each month to celebrate their heritage, give back to the community and have a whole lot of fun in the process! Offering meeting locations in Safety Harbor and New Port Richey, LIADO is an exciting organization that gives back to the community. LIADO Offers Scholarship Opportunities Each Year! On June 21st at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Safety Harbor, LIADO held their Annual Awards Ceremony. Every year, LIADO awards scholarships to students of ItalianAmerican descent on the basis of academic merit, community involvement and need. Their scholarship program has assisted students, of various ages, all across the nation. Current LIADO President, Cindy

18

Diana, said, “Since its inception in 1993, The Italian-American Women of Today have held local charities and students seeking higher education near to our hearts. Their goals align with our mission statement, to help others in the community & to help others reach their potential.” Accepting scholarship applications from all over the United States, the LIADO Board of Directors had a very difficult task choosing scholarship winners, as there were so many deserving students! The majority of these students were at the top of their class and went above and beyond to help their families and their communities. After a lot of deliberation, five of the applicants were each awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Scholarship award winners included Alea Delmastro from Miami, Florida, Hannah Drake from Charleston, Illinois; Isabelle Kawczynski from Martinsburg, West Virginia; Victoria Lawless from Bellevue, Washington; and Celia Janes from Orange, California.

Alzheimer’s Gulf Coast, Paul B. Stephens School, Children’s Cancer Center, 1 Voice Foundation, Autism Speaks, Angelus House, Safety Harbor Library and the Women’s Resource Center. Each of the representatives in attendance were eager to talk to the LIADO members and to thank them for their donation. MaryAnn Massolio, from 1 Voice Foundation, spoke to LIADO about how their organization, which helps children with cancer by providing educational, psychosocial and financial resources, is moving forward with creating a school just for cancer patients! She said, “We want to thank you and let you know that your donation stays right here in Tampa Bay to help local children and their families.” One Voice Foundation also funds local pediatric cancer research. Autism Speaks is an organization that raises awareness about Autism, advocates for the cause, and ultimately funds research with the goal of finding out why so many children are being diagnosed with Autism each year. Michelle Maulsby, a representative from Autism Speaks, said, “As a mom of four boys, three of which have Autism, Autism is no longer a rare

diagnosis. 1 out of 42 boys are diagnosed with Autism. 1 out of 42! This donation and others helps us to fund research that will help us to hopefully find out why this is happening to our children.” Diana said, “We support these efforts by fundraising throughout the year, and especially through our San Gennaro Festa, right here in Safety Harbor, which introduces and immerses the community in Italian culture, if only for a few short days! We thank the representatives of each of the charities for the great work they do for others, and we applaud the Italian-Americans of today seeking their higher education.” Adding, “We are honored to make a difference by supporting these noble causes.” Are You an Italian-American Woman of Today? Join LIADO! If you’re a proud Italian lady, this is the group of friends you’ve been looking for! It’s like coming into a family reunion every time there’s a meeting. There’s food, there’s recipe sharing, and there’s a natural camaraderie. More than a “club” that meets for fun, LIADO is clearly a philanthropic organization that is based

on serving others. Speaking of serving others, LIADO is also the driving force behind the popular San Gennaro Festa that has taken place in Safety Harbor for a dozen years. The San Gennaro Festa pays homage to the patron saint of Naples, Italy, and celebrates the Italian-American heritage. Thousands of people, both Italian and non-Italian, attend the Festa to enjoy the live music, to dine on thousands of homemade meatballs (from scratch, secret sauce), to partake in the cannolis, and to learn some tricks of the trade at the cooking demonstrations. The next San Gennaro Festa will be held at the Safety Harbor Marina Park (after its renovation is completed), on Saturday and Sunday, February 18th and 19th, in 2017. In addition to hosting the San Gennaro Festa, LIADO is an organization that celebrates the Italian way of life all year round. It’s about the food, the language, and the history. The meetings are a lot of fun, and LIADO offers members many great opportunities to learn more about their shared cultural past by watching movies, sharing books, learning about the different regions of Italy and more. If you want to become a

Turf Warriors: Combat Veterans Connecting Through Golf By Kim Thomas Combat Veterans and Combat Wounded Veterans, the men and women who literally put their lives on the line for the United States and its citizens, make a huge sacrifice, and they do not want to talk about it so much. But ask about their golf game! This is something that Combat Wounded Veteran Steve Surface and his father Combat Veteran Stephen Surface viscerally understand. Stephen, who served in Vietnam, and more recently as a past Commander of the VFW says, “A Vet will talk to another Vet before anyone else because we understand they understand. Out here on the golf course, it brings us together.” Turf Warriors, founded by Combat Wounded Veteran Steve Surface, is a unique organization that allows Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans to focus on something that is both challenging and fulfilling – their golf game and the camaraderie they enjoy! Turf Warriors is what Purple Heart recipient and Vietnam Veteran Rudy Salis calls, “going old school,” adding, “we are Veterans help-

Steve explains why it’s so important for Combat Veterans and Combat Wounded Veterans to be able to focus on something as normal as improving one’s golf game. He wrote, “We come from a war zone and then are expected to go back to who we were prior to deployment. We are young adults who have seen horrible things and now have to live with it, without showing weakness or telling our spouses and family what we have actually seen or had to do because we don’t want to lose the innocent respect, moral and honor that our best friends, the love of our life, our families have for us.” Turf Warriors – More Than a Game Steve Surface invited Neighborhood News & Lifestyles to come out to Turf Warriors’ second Combat Veterans Golf

Clinic at East Lake Woodlands Golf Course on Tuesday, June 21st. Turf Warriors meet at East Lake Woodlands Country Club every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. The cost to the Veterans is zero. They get about 30- to 45minute lesson from a PGA Pro; then play the course with other Veterans. Initially, the clinics were first held at Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course, which still supports the organization as well as the children of Veterans through its First Tee program. Steve says that East Lake Woodlands Golf Club manager, Dan Riker, immediately agreed to support Turf Warriors. East Lake Woodlands’ PGA Golf Pro Kent Magilligan is happy to donate his time, saying, “I relate very well to these guys. I will hit my 23-year anniversary with the Air Force in September. And, golf, as frustrating as it is – it’s peaceful and it’s a very individualized game. The goal of Turf Warriors: “We want one clinic in every county in Florida, where Veterans can come together and enjoy the game and the camaraderie once a month at no cost to them. We are looking for Golf Clubs that will donate tee times and Golf Pros who will donate an hour of instruction,” says Steve. Pinellas County is just the

start! Upcoming clinics are being put in place at Silver Dollar Golf & Trap Club in Odessa, which should start late July, and at Hernando Oaks in Brooksville sometime in August. Not only is Turf Warriors in search of golf clubs throughout Florida to get involved, they also are seeking Combat Veterans or Combat Wounded Veterans who can take a leadership role in each clinic. And if you know of anyone who owns a building that could be used for indoor golf, please contact Turf Warriors. Steve explains that there are many Combat Wounded Veterans who can’t play golf outside, such as those who have suffered burns or brain injuries that make them sensitive to bright sunlight. There are many ways to help and Turf Warriors gladly accepts used golf clubs and bags and monetary donations are used to purchase new golf bags. Combat and Combat Wounded Veterans are invited to participate and can find more information online at www.TurfWarriors.org. Community members who would like to support Turf Warriors, please contact Steve Surface at steveturfwarriors@gmail.com.

At Discovery Point, we understand that children learn best by being able to observe, question, and play in learning rich environments.
