Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Carla Dubis First of all, I want to start by introducing myself. My name is Carla Dubis, I am the Creative Director and new editor of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. I am 31 years old and I was born and raised in Venezuela, my mother is Italian and my Father, who unexpectedly passed away 3 months ago, was from Poland. What can I say? I am a mutt! I am fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. I moved from Venezuela to Tampa when I was 16 years old to attend UT. I have a Bachelors in Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Tampa and a Masters in Education with a concentration in Instructional Technology and Web Design from USF. Go Bulls! :) I have called Tampa my home since 2003, and even though at first I thought to myself “As soon as I graduate I am out of here!” I fell in love with this city and I have no intentions of ever leaving. I have lived in Harbour Island for the past 10 years and I have seen this city grow exponentially in the past decade. I have seen so many of spots close its doors throughout the years, but so many other businesses and restaurants have opened, making this medium sized city, feel like a big metropolis. I never get

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

bored, there’s always something fun to do here. From an art festival to a margarita festival, from broadway plays to fantastic concerts and so much more! I am a big foodie, a craft beer lover, a caffeine addict and a big lightning fan! I spend most of my weekends eating all over Tampa Bay, fishing with my fiance (Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles’ Publisher Matt Selby), hanging out with my family (who moved to Tampa 5 years ago after I bragged about it so much!), rooting for our local sports teams (go lightning!), or watching a movie. Whenever I get the opportunity to travel, which is one of my biggest passions, I find myself missing Tampa a lot (something I never really thought I would experience!) because it’s home to me now, and because I got spoiled with all the things this amazing city has to offer... Here we have it all! We have beautiful beaches, amazing weather (most of the time, that humidity though!), luxury boutiques, fantastic shopping malls, cultural events, art festivals, music festivals and some of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of trying. The best part? you are only a short drive away. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who

believed in me and trusted me with the positions I currently have, the Selby Family. Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles has been owned and operated by the Selby Family for over 25 years, and I am very lucky to be the newest addition to the family! I could not be happier God put me in the path of this family, they are seriously the most amazing, loving, hard-working and honest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Working with them is as rewarding as it is fun. So what can I offer Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles? Besides my graphic and web design skills, I will definitely bring my decent grammar and editing ability and my personal insight about all things Tampa Bay.. I will be keeping you up to date with the latest news and fun events happening in the area, I will tell you about the best restaurants and hot spots to visit... after all, I have been living here for over a decade, so I know a thing or two about Tampa! If you ever want to reach out to me because you want us to share a local event, or if you have an amazing story you want published in any of our 7 publications, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com.

Late Summer Snook Fishing It’s August and the fishing can be as hot as the weather on some days, and completely turn off on others. It can be a very frustrating time of year for many anglers in search of one of the most iconic gamefish in our waters; the Snook! I’ve been fishing my entire life and just like many of you, some days I catch fish until I’m tired of it, and somedays fishing is so slow I honestly get tired of fishing. I don’t care who you are or how vast your knowledge is, sometimes getting the fish to bite is a challenge. During the summer months, some fishing days are full of double digit catches and some days it’s next to impossible to even find the bait. But why? Well, many factors come into play but one of the most obvious, and sometimes overlooked factor is simply the heat. The water temps can reach over 90 degrees by noon and often times the fish will just shut off. They still have to eat, but most of the time, they choose the times of day that are a little more comfortable for them. In August, early morning or night fishing is going to be your best bet. Snook love an abundance of baitfish, moving current and warm water temperatures. They are opportunistic feeders who exert energy when needed but are completely happy stacking up in one place for hours. They stack up in areas where, you guessed it, a strong moving current will flush baitfish right in their face, producing an easy meal. They are also very structure-oriented, and even when you see them cruising the beach, they are usually just moving to their next spot near a drop off, mangrove bed, dock or other underwater habitat. High Tide Snook fishing differs from Low Tide Snook fishing as well. Think about it, how many times have you caught a fish and go back to that spot over and over. My guess is, you catch fish there again but not every time, and that can be frustrating. Why aren’t they always there? The short answer is, they are, just not always when you’re there. With a high tide, Snook enjoy deeper water near the mangroves and shorelines so they tend to hide out under the cover of the groves, ambushing pray as it swims by in the current. You can also find Snook under docks at this time. During a low tide, less water is near the shoreline so the Snook won’t be there. They tend to be in deeper channels and on drop off edges during the lower tides. This isn’t to say you can’t find an abundance of Snook in deeper channels or under bridges during high tide, it’s just more likely on a low. Even with all this information, if you don’t have the local knowledge of where the fish tend to be, you're going to spend a lot of time scouring miles of the dense mangrove shorelines of Florida. This is where hiring an experienced fishing guide can make your day on the water a lot more successful. I’ll be honest though, there’s days where we find the fish, all the conditions are right on paper, but they won’t eat. It happens, and anyone who says otherwise is just down right lying to you. If fishing was easy, it wouldn’t be so rewarding. The thrill of the hunt, the days that shut us out, and especially the days that a plan comes together and the fish are happy to cooperate, are what keep us addicted and coming back for more. Tight Lines! If you want to go Snook fishing with me, call me at 727-253-5893, follow me on Instagram @captmattselby or on Facebook under Epic Sport Fishing.

IMPROVING SAT/ACT SCORES by Dr. Wayne Adams School has started again … where did the summer go? Can you believe it is time to start thinking about the SAT and ACT again, plus the PSAT which is the only qualifying exam for national merit scholarships? Here is the fall schedule for these exams: SAT: Aug 26, Oct 7, Nov 4, Dec 2; PSAT primary date Oct 11; ACT: Sept 9, Oct 28, Dec 9. Rising seniors are getting ready for SAT and ACT Exams, completing applications, writing college application essays, and enjoying their senior year. Rising juniors are getting ready for the PSAT, often preparing for the full SAT and ACT Exams to see how they can score, and see where they need to improve. Rising sophomores are often getting ready for the PSAT, and wondering what the future brings with standardized exams. Which is the better exam for college applications? Opinions vary, but my students prefer the ACT exam because they perceive it is easier, the questions are more direct, and the essay is definitely easier. Only about 25% of my student prefer the SAT. The good news is that my students normally score 15 percentiles higher on one exam or the other. The bad news is that we don’t usually know which will be better until they have taken both. Many parents don’t know that many colleges, especially at the top level, require a student also take two SAT Subject Tests if that student applies with a SAT Exam score. If that same student applies with an ACT Exam score, then there is not requirement for two SAT Subject Tests. Plus, you can “superscore” a SAT Exam, which means submitting the high scores from multiple exams as if that student had taken the exam only once. Just don’t put college codes in your SAT application for automatic distribution until you have seen the scores and have decided which ones you want to submit. Top college often ask if a student has taken more than one SAT Exam, and request that all exam scores be submitted. However, they usually “superscore” for a student anyway. The ACT Exam does not allow “superscoring”. Again, most colleges will do this anyway when a student submits scores from multiple exams. Florida Bright Futures “superscores” both exams. This year, the

16

Florida Academic Scholars award was doubled to $6,000+, which covers full tuition at any public university. This is a one year increase, but probably will be extended. Often, my students have a high GPA and strong class standing, but cannot score high enough on the SAT or ACT for their target or dream schools. The difficulty is not with the student, the difficulty is with how they are prepared specifically for these exams. My phone rings off the hook right after standard exam scores are received with parents and students not understanding why scores are not higher. Some really good news is that, if a highly qualified student lives in Florida, often top schools around the country will give that student a preference compared to a student from the northeast or other state where the high school system is perceived as stronger. If you do not believe that Florida is perceived as “dumbed down”, just look at the ACT exam that gives a students relative percentile compared to the state, and then nationally. The national score is often 5 – 10 percentiles lower than the Florida score. I often am asked when a student should start preparing for these standardized exams. The answer depends on each student and family situation. In general, if a student is aiming for a top school nationally or UF or FSU in Florida, the competion for admission continues to get tougher. Ivy League and similar schools have an average score of around 1500 on the SAT, 33 on the ACT, for a student to be admitted. Having tutored national merit finalists and semi-finalists, it takes some time to get to this level of performance. Many times I am contacted about a student who has very high scores in one or two areas of these exams, and needs “skill strengthening”

Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. TECH TALK with Bob the Computer Guy By Bob Dalles

Today’s Topic: Choosing the right printer Greetings Friends… When talking with my clients, one question that comes up quite frequently is, “I need a new printer. What do you recommend?” One would think this question is easy to answer. However, there is much to consider when selecting a printer. Do you need a monochrome inkjet, color inkjet, monochrome laser, color laser, dot matrix, dye sublimation, solid ink, or thermal? That depends on what you will be printing and the quantity of pages you need to print. Most inexpensive printers can handle tasks like printing occasional emails or web pages, recipes, driving maps, grocery lists and coupons. If your needs are more of a professional nature, such as business letters, customer bids and estimates or even brochures, then you’ll need a printer that is capable of providing a more

20

paper will you be using? Most printers will print to letter size (8.5”x 11”) and legal size (8.5”x 14”) paper. If you are a photographer or publisher you may need a larger format printer that can handle 11”x 17” or perhaps even 24”x 36” poster size. Also keep in mind that printers have a minimum size of paper they can handle. Most will Bob Dalles, owner, print to a 4”x 6” or Bob the Computer Guy even a 3.5”x 5” & Associates, Inc. index card. If you need to print to crisp and professional look. How these smaller formats make certain much printing do you plan to do? A that the printer you choose will few pages a month or 10,000 pages? handle it. Otherwise you will find Do you need color or will yourself constantly clearing paper monochrome be sufficient? What size jams, which wastes paper, ink/toner,

and your time. Most people’s needs are pretty basic. They plan to print to standard 8.5”x 11” paper. So the only two other questions to answer are: 1) Do we need to print in color? And 2) How many pages do we plan to print every month? Once we have the answers to those questions we can then look at which printer can best serve us. Of course there is one additional consideration… price. What’s your guess for the price of a printer you might need? Think about it and we’ll further explore printer options next time. Got a tech question? Email me at TechTalkTBNL@ BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. Oldsmar Breaks Ground for Washington Park Village

Photo courtesy of the City of Oldsmar Oldsmar City Council, joined by Point Construction and developer representatives, broke ground to officially mark the beginning of Oldsmar’s newest development – Washington Park Village - on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 20, 2017. Located at the northeast corner of St. Petersburg Drive and Park Boulevard, Washington Park Village will feature eight 3-story units and seven 2-story units and built out in two

phases. According to the developer, they hope to have phase one completed in early 2018. Once sold out, they will move into phase two. The project was a dreamchild for Steve Becklund and his family back in 2005. When the economy took a downturn, it was placed on hold. With the current shift in the real estate market, Washington Park Village was born again. “This development will certainly

compliment what is being planned for the downtown area,” stated Oldsmar Mayor Doug Bevis. “With the new townhome projects at the 580 bridge and Woodlands Square Plaza being revitalized, Washington Park Village is another addition that will be great for the community.” To learn more about the development, visit their website at WashingtonParkVillage.com.

Additionally, each patient receives a physical, lab work, and an EKG for their heart. As part of the program, the physicians will determine if a Vitamin B12 shot, a multivitamin or an appetite suppressant will be necessary. Throughout the program, patients have weekly and then monthly check-ins with the doctors and nurses who will help them adjust their diet and lifestyle as necessary to reach their goals. “The first few weeks are about losing weight and getting to the patient’s ideal weight,” said Dr. Duic. “We also educate them about living a healthy lifestyle, incorporating exercise into their routine, and developing healthy habits. Once they’ve reached their goal weight, we are able to start introducing more foods into their diet, but we focus on portion control.” Even after the initial weight loss period is over, Doctor’s Choice

“Man Cave” Continued from page 1 Warehouse in Odessa. It is possible to meet three generations of the Klopf family at the family-ran business. Al Klopf Jr. and his wife Jeroline own and oversee operations at the Odessa location, and their sons Carson, Cody and Canyon have grown up learning the business and helping customers. Candy is an employee whose hard work and knowledge are valued by the family and their customers. Al and Jeroline’s oldest son Carson is now the owner/operator of The Man Cave Warehouse in Orlando, which features a 3,000-sq.-ft. showroom. If you are looking for quality, white glove delivery and competitive prices, The Man Cave Warehouse is the place to shop. “We sell quality products at a great price and provide the best, personalized service in the industry,” says Al Jr. “We want to earn your business.” Canyon is the youngest of the Klopf clan, but this kid knows his family’s business! Canyon’s enthusiasm was genuine as he pointed

out the cool hidden features that many of the billiards tables and game room furnishings have – like the benches for the dining/billiards tables that provide storage for cues and racks and the billiards tables with hidden storage underneath for everything needed for the game, keeping your living space uncluttered. First walking in to The Man Cave Warehouse, my eye was drawn to a pool table that was rustic, yet modern. Looking around, I realized there were three or four tables in that style alone. If your taste leans more classic or ornate, The Man Cave Warehouse has what you are looking for. Some brands offered include Legacy Billiards, Presidential Billiards, Olhausen Billards, California House, Outdoor Billiards and Excaliber Billiards. Legacy Billiards has awarded The Man Cave Warehouse with its “Diamond Dealer” award for the past five years and running. There are gaming tables of every kind, including multipurpose dining/billiards tables that enable homeowners to transform their elegant dining room into an elegant billiards room, or if you’d prefer a dining/poker/craps table, you’ll find

it at The Man Cave Warehouse! a used table, and they made sure it was in top shape. Brendan delivered and installed the table, including new felt, and he is clearly an expert at what he does. The table is perfect. The store has a great selection of “man cave” supplies... pretty much everything you need for billiards, darts, arcade games, furniture, lights, and lots of other great stuff. Prices seem competitive as well. Basically, good quality for a good price, and great service.” Steven Fisher, another customers that gives The Man Cave

Warehouse a five star review, states, “First rate all the way! We furnished an entire billiard room and could not be happier. Everything looks awesome. The staff was very patient and helped us select all our custom pieces. Delivery was white glove all the way. We also came back and got a video game.”

Game Rooms Create Fun Times and Great Memories The Klopf family knows that playing pool, throwing darts,

gathering at the card table is more than just fun and games; it’s a way to build personal skill, challenge your buddies, and most importantly, to bond with family and friends. Some of my favorite memories of visiting my grandparents were playing pool on Granddaddy Pat’s pool table. That pool table moved with him from Dover (near Plant City) to Apalachicola, and was a staple throughout my childhood into my adult years. During the happiest of times and the saddest, inevitably a game of pool would pull everyone

together, either because we had our turn at playing or picked a side to root for. If you can create a game room for your family, it will pay you back in spades with good times! The Man Cave Warehouse is located at 8811 N. Gunn Hwy. in Odessa and is open from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Monday – Thursday, and from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
