From owner Derek Wells’ brick Inglenook fireplace, the steel tipped dart boards, to the custom craft and cask beer, to the hand-cut and handlain tile logo on the floor when you enter The Wild Rover Brewery, you immediately realized you’ve discovered someplace special. This is a traditional English Pub nestled off the beaten path in an unassuming warehouse building in Westchase - a short drive behind Dunkin Donuts reveals a step into history. Sitting in the Snug bar with highback wooden seats, Derek regaled with tales of why things were as they were in The Wild Rover Brewery. In the olden days in England, his extra high-back seating actually served as patron protection. The high backs would prevent a man from being hit on the head from behind, knocked out and pressganged - brought out to sea to serve for years in the navy or merchant navy. Same thing went for his pewter mugs with the clear glass bottom. Historically, if a naval officer came in a dropped a coin in your mug, if you drank to the bottom, it

was considered that you had accepted the King’s money and were obligated into service. A glass bottom enabled a patron to see this coin. Besides a traditional mouthwatering English menu, it was these little touches that British expats and Tampa natives alike appreciated most of all. Before he called Tampa Bay home, Derek managed John Courage Brewery in England and actually met his wife Linda in the same pub. Wild Rover was founded by Derek and his son, Ricky. When Ricky came home from Stetson University on the weekends, they started by brewing beer in their garage and fell in love with the concept of craft brewing. After graduating and finding himself unfulfilled, working behind a desk, Ricky decided his heart belonged to craft brewing and opened the pub with his father. “My son is the Master Brewer and brews all of the beer that we sell here. We also sell some ciders imported from England and have a variety of wines,” he said. Eventually Derek hopes to add See “Wild Rover” on page 16.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Carla Dubis First of all, I want to start by introducing myself. My name is Carla Dubis, I am the Creative Director and new editor of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. I am 31 years old and I was born and raised in Venezuela, my mother is Italian and my Father, who unexpectedly passed away 3 months ago, was from Poland. What can I say? I am a mutt! I am fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. I moved from Venezuela to Tampa when I was 16 years old to attend UT. I have a Bachelors in Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Tampa and a Masters in Education with a concentration in Instructional Technology and Web Design from USF. Go Bulls! :) I have called Tampa my home since 2003, and even though at first I thought to myself “As soon as I graduate I am out of here!” I fell in love with this city and I have no intentions of ever leaving. I have lived in Harbour Island for the past 10 years and I have seen this city grow exponentially in the past decade. I have seen so many of spots close its doors throughout the years, but so many other businesses and restaurants have opened, making this medium sized city, feel like a big metropolis. I never get

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

bored, there’s always something fun to do here. From an art festival to a margarita festival, from broadway plays to fantastic concerts and so much more! I am a big foodie, a craft beer lover, a caffeine addict and a big lightning fan! I spend most of my weekends eating all over Tampa Bay, fishing with my fiance (Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles’ Publisher Matt Selby), hanging out with my family (who moved to Tampa 5 years ago after I bragged about it so much!), rooting for our local sports teams (go lightning!), or watching a movie. Whenever I get the opportunity to travel, which is one of my biggest passions, I find myself missing Tampa a lot (something I never really thought I would experience!) because it’s home to me now, and because I got spoiled with all the things this amazing city has to offer... Here we have it all! We have beautiful beaches, amazing weather (most of the time, that humidity though!), luxury boutiques, fantastic shopping malls, cultural events, art festivals, music festivals and some of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of trying. The best part? you are only a short drive away. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who

believed in me and trusted me with the positions I currently have, the Selby Family. Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles has been owned and operated by the Selby Family for over 25 years, and I am very lucky to be the newest addition to the family! I could not be happier God put me in the path of this family, they are seriously the most amazing, loving, hard-working and honest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Working with them is as rewarding as it is fun. So what can I offer Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles? Besides my graphic and web design skills, I will definitely bring my decent grammar and editing ability and my personal insight about all things Tampa Bay.. I will be keeping you up to date with the latest news and fun events happening in the area, I will tell you about the best restaurants and hot spots to visit... after all, I have been living here for over a decade, so I know a thing or two about Tampa! Epilepsy is a fairly common neurological disorder that affects 65 million people around the world. In the United States, it

affects about 3 million people. Anyone can develop epilepsy, but it's more common in young children and older adults. It occurs slightly more in males than in females. Even though there's no cure for epilepsy, the disorder can be managed with medications and other strategies. ESF's vision is to have all those affected by epilepsy and other seizure disorders living in West Central Florida feel empowered to achieve their full potential, so they can live a healthy, productive and satisfying life within a supportive community. Mr. Vinik’s Vision for Downtown Tampa By Michelle Naktin Born on March 22, 1959, everyone knew Jeffrey Vinik was going to be special, but I doubt they really knew just how incredible this New Jersey native would turn out to be. Mr. Vinik took the financial industry by storm by becoming the most prominent mutual fund manager when he led Fidelity Magellan in the 1990s. He made millions of dollars by taking chances on depreciated assets and after turning 50, he decided he wanted to make a change. Jeffrey told his wife Penny he had made the decision to buy a hockey team. Although shocked, Lightning Owner, Jeffrey Vinik Penny supported her husband’s decision, then Mr. Vinik did what made him a wealthy man: He did research. He read books on sports management, spoke to team owners around the country, met with N.H.L. Commissioner Mr. Bettman and even used Google to search “How to buy a hockey team.” When Jeff was ready in March 2010, he turned off the lights in his Boston office and became the owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that had won a Stanley Cup but sadly also had a parade of owners. This time was going to be different. Shortly after Mr. Vinik’s purchase of the Lightning, he began acquiring property surrounding Amalie Arena, where his hockey team plays. The area, once industrial, is now mostly parking lots and downtown waterfront property, and Mr. Vinik has big plans for the 30acre block. Channelside Bay Plaza, which Mr. Vinik owns, is a place where lots of lightning fans come together to get drinks and food before the games, but sadly the plaza has struggled financially for years. Many businesses on the plaza have closed their doors in the past 5 years, but restaurants such as Hooters, Thai Tani, Hablo Taco and Coldstone Creamery are still surviving. Vinik’s plans call for Channelside Bay Plaza to be demolished, with a park, office, retail and residential units to go in its place. Vinik’s proposal has more shops, restaurants, and businesses to be constructed across from Amalie Arena, where Ferg’s Live Bar and parking lots are located.

Discussions are still in the early stages, say officials and executives with Strategic Property Partners, the Tampa real estate company set up by Vinik and Cascade, a private capital fund launched by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates. The development plan has quickly grown from $1 billion to $3 billion in just a short amount of time. “Our vision embraces the Channelside waterfront. We want to create a mixed-use destination, designed to better connect the surrounding neighborhoods and create view corridors to the channel,” commented James Nozar, CEO of Strategic Property Partners. “It provides for a vibrant, yet functional waterfront, respecting the unique needs of the port that will maximize value for both the port and the community.” About $34 million dollars worth of work is currently under way and Strategic Property Partners has assembled a world-class design team for the project. Tampa-based Alfonso Architects, Inc. and David Conner + Associates will be leading the master-planning and vision for this exciting project. SPP originally envisioned a project with an ambitious 3 million square feet of development and now those numbers are looking closer to a 9 million square feet of expansion over the next decade with plans including: ĖĺîĘðëëĺp¹p¼Æ© ªÆÀĺpª ĺ|¯ª ¯ÀĝĺĪS¯ĺ Ó ĺÚ¯Êĺpªĺ pĺ¯ ĺ|¯©¹p¼ À¯ªĘĺ downtown Tampa now has about 5,800 residences total.) Ėĺíĝïĺ© ££ ¯ªĺÀ»Êp¼ ĺ Æĺ¯ ĺ¯ ã| À Ėĺìĺ© ££ ¯ªĺ¹£ÊÀĺÀ»Êp¼ ĺ Æĺ¯ ĺ¼ Æp £ĺ Strategic Property Partners also plans to demolish and rebuild the 230,000-square-foot Channelside Bay Plaza and plans are in the works to build two new hotels plus renovate the 700-room Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina. The proposal is planned for implementation over four phases, allowing Port Tampa Bay to continue ongoing operations and maintain required security along the working wharf. In Phase 1, SPP will partially transition the Garrison surface parking lot into a waterfront park with an adjacent events pavilion and beer garden. The Tampa Riverwalk extension would be constructed connecting with the park. Phase 1 would deliver in late 2018 pending approval of the proposed project by the Port Tampa Bay Board of Commissioners in early 2017. In Phase 2, two additional buildings would be constructed. Each would be one to three stories. The design envisions the ground floor will be lined with active retail and restaurants with outdoor dining oriented towards the waterfront. The wharf is also planned to be open to the public when not in use by the port. In the proposed timeline, Phase 2 is planned for delivery to market between Spring 2019 and Spring 2020. In Phases 3 and 4, residential buildings would be constructed along Channelside Drive, which will preserve view corridors and create a more comfortable pedestrian-oriented scale along the waterfront. The city of Tampa and Hillsborough County have already committed a total of $100 million in downtown property tax revenues for realigning streets, putting in new water and sewer systems as well as making other public improvements on the land surrounding Amalie Arena. “This is another exciting step toward bringing the waterfront back to the people, the time is right to take this area to the next level and create a new destination for generations to come.” Says Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

The vision for the Tampa Bay Area and property is to transform the land within the Channelside area – currently industrial waterfront and make it into a dynamic, community centerpiece where people will come to live, work and play all in the same neighborhood for years to come. This is a much needed renovation and development that will boost our local economy and attract new residents from all over the state and even the country. With thousands of UT students, young adults, retirees and entrepreneurs looking for affordable downtown housing options, we can only hope that Mr. Vinik’s vision will be a dream come true for many current and potential South Tampa residents.

Late Summer Snook Fishing It’s August and the fishing can be as hot as the weather on some days, and completely turn off on others. It can be a very frustrating time of year for many anglers in search of one of the most iconic gamefish in our waters; the Snook! I’ve been fishing my entire life and just like many of you, some days I catch fish until I’m tired of it, and somedays fishing is so slow I honestly get tired of fishing. I don’t care who you are or how vast your knowledge is, sometimes getting the fish to bite is a challenge. During the summer months, some fishing days are full of double digit catches and some days it’s next to impossible to even find the bait. But why? Well, many factors come into play but one of the most obvious, and sometimes overlooked factor is simply the heat. The water temps can reach over 90 degrees by noon and often times the fish will just shut off. They still have to eat, but most of the time, they choose the times of day that are a little more comfortable for them. In August, early morning or night fishing is going to be your best bet. Snook love an abundance of baitfish, moving current and warm water temperatures. They are opportunistic feeders who exert energy when needed but are completely happy stacking up in one place for hours. They stack up in areas where, you guessed it, a strong moving current will flush baitfish right in their face, producing an easy meal. They are also very structure-oriented, and even when you see them cruising the beach, they are usually just moving to their next spot near a drop off, mangrove bed, dock or other underwater habitat. High Tide Snook fishing differs from Low Tide Snook fishing as well. Think about it, how many times have you caught a fish and go back to that spot over and over. My guess is, you catch fish there again but not every time, and that can be frustrating. Why aren’t they always there? The short answer is, they are, just not always when you’re there. With a high tide, Snook enjoy deeper water near the mangroves and shorelines so they tend to hide out under the cover of the groves, ambushing pray as it swims by in the current. You can also find Snook under docks at this time. During a low tide, less water is near the shoreline so the Snook won’t be there. They tend to be in deeper channels and on drop off edges during the lower tides. This isn’t to say you can’t find an abundance of Snook in deeper channels or under bridges during high tide, it’s just more likely on a low. Even with all this information, if you don’t have the local knowledge of where the fish tend to be, you're going to spend a lot of time scouring miles of the dense mangrove shorelines of Florida. This is where hiring an experienced fishing guide can make your day on the water a lot more successful. I’ll be honest though, there’s days where we find the fish, all the conditions are right on paper, but they won’t eat. It happens, and anyone who says otherwise is just down right lying to you. If fishing was easy, it wouldn’t be so rewarding. The thrill of the hunt, the days that shut us out, and especially the days that a plan comes together and the fish are happy to cooperate, are what keep us addicted and coming back for more. Tight Lines! If you want to go Snook fishing with me, call me at 727-253-5893, follow me on Instagram @captmattselby or on Facebook under Epic Sport Fishing.

All cask and tap beers pay homage to classic 60-70s music. Cask beers available include Let it ESB - English Bitter, John Barleywine Must Die - English Barleywine, while on tap is Locomotive Breath - Irish Red, Stairway to Hefe'n - Dry-Hopped Wheat Ale, and Hello, Lexie Lou American Stout, with many others available. “All of Ricky’s beers are good, but I tend to drink the dark malty beers. I’m very particular to our cask beers which are the old-fashioned way of serving beer long ago when you had to pull a beer out of a cellar when it was in a barrel (cask) by tradition hand pump,” he said. “We have four beers that we serve with traditional hand pumps which offers less carbonation – the beer conditions within the cask – and it self carbonates in that process. It tends to be less carbonated than traditional keg beers.” The Wild Rover Brewery features two traditional bars – one family-friendly, the other reserved for adults and a third, a sports bar for monthly Trivia Tuesday, games, and piano-playing as well as a dogfriendly outdoor beer garden. The brewery offers onsite/offsite corporate catering and can host special events like anniversary parties, birthdays, and weddings. There is even a justice of the peace on staff. When they first opened in Odessa, they were the fourth brew pub in Hillsborough County. “We serve predominantly traditional English food, but we do put a somewhat American slant on some of the items like wings – not hot wings- but wings done in sticky stout and wings done in a curry

We make our batter and use our beer to make the batter.” They also serve Shepard’s Pie, Bangers and Mash, Cornish Pasties, Chicken Curry, among other standard English offerings. Kirk Sexton, a local customer, rated Wild Rover 5 stars on google and had this to say about her experience; “Great craft brewery, restaurant and pub. The brewmaster here really knows what he is doing. Excellent craft ales, and the kitchen rolls out some great food. Great pub atmosphere, real dartboards and a room configured like a sports bar as well. This place really has it all. Katy Morgan, another of many Wild Rover satisfied customers, says “Authentic British pub grub, relaxing atmosphere, great place to chill and eat amazing food.” Wild Rover opens at 11am and they offer $8 lunch specials, which include a drink. reducing his 7-day workweek and leaving his son in charge, Derek still has big expansion plans for his pub including hosting events in the pub brewery including live bands monthly and theatrical events – potentially Rocky Horror. “We are planning a huge anniversary celebration on August 19. We have two bands at the moment and are looking to book one or two more,” he said. Because of its rather hidden unassuming location, people come to the pub not anticipating the magic that awaits them inside. It may look like a warehouse on the outside, but

his best compliment comes from expats’ reaction from behind closed doors. “People say it feels like they’re walking into a pub at home.” The Wild Rover Brewery is located at 13921 Lynmar Blvd. Tampa, FL 33626, behind Dunkin Donuts off of Race Track Road. Open Monday through Thursday 11am to 11pm, 11am -11:59 pm om Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 9:00pm on Sunday. Learn more about The Wild Rover Brewery at Facebook.com/WildRoverBrewery/
