Twinz Big City Hot Dogs – Legendary Big City Hotdogs, Burgers, Fries & Shakes By Alexis Selby Expertly blending the unique cuisines of Chicago, New York and many other great cities, including our very own Tampa, Twinz Big City Hot Dogs brings the Carrollwood community a delicious taste of big city fare! Boasting a huge selection of mouth watering eats, the menu at Twinz showcases a little bit of everything, from loaded gourmet hot dogs, juicy burgers and seasoned fries, to their extremely popular chicken wings and hand-spun milkshakes. “We get really creative with our food, bringing you

items that you won’t find anywhere else,” says manager Tony Camarero. The concept for Twinz was developed by owners and twin brothers Richard and Robert Bowe. Their goal was to bring something new to the Tampa Bay Area – and they have definitely succeeded! Opening this past May, this fun, local hangout has been very well received in the community, providing customers with a place where they can enjoy a delicious, quality meal at a very affordable price. “We love this area and enjoy meeting people in the community,” See “Twinz” on page 26.

As the name of her practice “All About Amore” indicates, Dr. Mango truly loves cats, which is evident from the moment you meet her. Nestled in the corner of her office lies her beautiful cat Bagheera, who she rescued over five years ago after he was hit by a car, causing the lower half of his body to become paralyzed. His old owners wanted to euthanize him, but Dr. Mango, being the compassionate loving person that she is could not let that happen, and seeing the light and

life in the cat’s eyes adopted him. He has been her happy companion ever since. He now accompanies her everywhere she goes, happily greeting new clients when they enter All About Amore Cat Hospital. For Dr. Mango, becoming a vet was inevitable. Growing up with many pets, her love for cats, and animals of all kinds, was realized at a young age. “I have always wanted to be a veterinarian since I was a little kid,” says Dr. See “Cat Hospital” on page 24.

Happy Holidays from Neighborhood News & Lifestyles! The holidays are here, bringing along with it a whirlwind of festivities and celebrations, and at this time I would like to take the opportunity, on behalf of all of us here at the Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, to wish all our readers and advertisers a wonderful Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and most importantly, whatever your belief may be, great tidings this holiday season. From our dedicated advertisers to our loyal readers, it is you we have to thank for our continued success and growth over this past year. It is all of us together that make our community strong – from our local business owners to all the other hardworking employees and community members that call this area home. To so many, Thanksgiving is not just about getting together and celebrating with family and friends over a delicious meal of turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, but also signifies a time to reflect on the past year and give thanks for

blessings – including the joyous opportunity to be united for such an occasion. This holiday season, I would like to take the opportunity to say how grateful I am to be part of such an extraordinary community that has so warmly welcomed me into their hearts and their homes with open arms. This past year, and the many years I have been writing for the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, I have had the chance to meet so many of our wonderful local business owners and let me tell you, they have left an impression on me that will last a lifetime. They are some of the most dedicated, honest and hard-working people I have ever met, who, no matter how busy, will still find time and money to support local school programs, athletics programs and many other great charities. It has been a real pleasure getting to know the people in this community and I look forward to many great years to come! This year, as millions of people across the country come together with their closest friends and family, I ask you

to reflect about the many things in life that you have to be thankful for. We are such a blessed community and are so fortunate to live in a place where love and friendships are so abundant. Where neighbors become friends, who work and live together in such unity and harmony. I would like to conclude by saying how grateful our entire Neighborhood News & Lifestyles team is for all of our readers and for your continued support over the past year. We wish you a prosperous and bountiful holiday and many joyous years to come! As Henri J. M. Nouwen once said, “Gratitude goes beyond the "mine" and "thine" and claims the truth that all of life is a pure gift. In the past I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.”

Rubin, Captain (Retired), U.S. Navy (Sunrise) 6. Robert J. Silah, Captain (Retired), U.S. Navy (Tampa) The Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame recognizes and honors those military veterans who, through their works

and lives during or after military service, have made a significant contribution to the state of Florida through civic, business, public service or other pursuits. It is not a traditional military hall of fame, as it focuses on post-military contributions to the State of Florida. The induction ceremony took place at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 12, 2013 in the Cabinet Room of the State Capitol Building in Tallahassee. “This ceremony sets forth a proud tradition of recognizing veterans for their leadership and civic contributions to the state,” said retired Air Force Col. Bruce Host, a former Leon County Commissioner who serves as council chairman. “We look forward to recognizing these distinguished veterans and many more in future years.” The Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame Council, a seven-member advisory panel, is responsible by Florida Statute for submitting to the Governor and Cabinet a list of recommended nominees each year. In selecting its nominees for submission, the council gives preference to veterans who were either born in Florida or adopted Florida as their home state. The council’s recommendations for

the inaugural class were unanimously accepted by Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet on Sept. 24, 2013. For more information, please visit www.FloridaVeteransHallOfFame.org/index.asp

Fall-themed Lessons Focus on the Farm for Early Primary Students Parents waited with cameras poised, ready for the first sign of horses. With happy shouts and the thunder of feet, kindergartners and PreK4 students rounded a corner and came into view. They galloped toward their guests on yardstick horses they had decorated and named to celebrate “Fall Fun on the Farm.” Corbett Preparatory School of IDS teachers temporarily turned a sliver of land along Lake Lipsey into a farm for a day, bringing to life the

farming unit Early Primary students had studied during October. Discussions about imports and exports, a farmer’s different jobs, the variety of foods that come from farms and the life cycle of farm animals brought depth and breadth to the fall-themed lessons. Students expanded upon an International Baccalaureate unit of inquiry “How We Organize Ourselves: Community Work Together” to focus on rural farm communities, learning where food comes from and how it is grown and packaged to wind up on their tables at home. The “From the Farm to the Table” unit incorporated language arts, geography, math and critical thinking. Kindergarten teachers used United States and world maps for students to plot different foods grown in various regions. In math, students sequenced the growth of a pumpkin plant from a tiny seed to a plump pumpkin on the vine. They also sorted and graphed different crops and learned how to read and interpret those graphs. Students generated a list of what they thought they knew about farms, the questions they had and topics they wanted to explore to steer the direc-

The PreK4 class explored global connections, studying farms around the world to see similarities and differences as they learned about animals, types of farms and farming jobs. Spanish teacher Alejandra Izquierdo taught the children a song called “La Granja” or “The Farm” that had them chanting animal sounds in Spanish. The students were in-

trigued to find out how different languages decoded animal sounds such as “ki ki ri ki” in Spanish for a rooster’s “cock-a-doodle-doo.” All of the class work culminated in “Fall Fun on the Farm,” a magical morning of activities that brought the farm off the pages of books and turned it into something students could experience for themselves. Dressed like farmers, the students ran from station to station for new discoveries. They bounced along on a hayride through the campus, danced

along with PreK4 teacher Teresa Krig in a hoedown and gently pet goats, sheep and bunnies. Family members arrived to accompany students on their journeys, watching as they painted faces on pumpkins and tasted homemade candy apples. Students lined up to race on their handmade horses, and when they needed some quiet time, they snuggled with moms, dads and grandparents on picnic blankets by the lake, where they could pick out fall-themed books to read together.

Two hours passed quickly, and the festivities had to come to a close as lunchtime and afternoon lessons approached. The children plucked their horses from the milk-crate stables where they had rested and trotted back behind their teachers toward their classrooms. Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS (formerly Independent Day School - Corbett Campus) is a fully accredited, nonsectarian private school located in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood. The school serves over 500 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and offers the International Baccalaureate program of study for all students. Teachers are endorsed in gifted education through a master’s level grant with the University of South Florida College of Education. Corbett Prep balances a dynamic, nurturing and safe learning environment with high standards and high expectations to develop a positive approach to life and learning. Corbett Prep has become recognized as an exemplary school with over 7,000 visitors observing and learning from Corbett Prep teachers. Relax, Unwind, and Rejuvenate at Althea Massage & Spa By Alexis Selby Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Carrollwood lies a secret oasis, a quiet reprieve where you can come to let go of the stresses of your day. For once you step inside the doors of Althea Massage and Spa you leave your worries behind and are whisked away into a world of relaxation and rejuvenation. The intimate atmosphere at Althea sets the perfect tone, and their wonderful spa services will give you the opportunity to renew your energy and revive your spirit – leaving you ready to take on the world! Meaning “healing” in Greek, the name “Althea” is the perfect embodiment for owner Donna Confalone’s vision, and accurately portrays what her spa is all about, wellness and holistic healing of the body, mind and spirit. Donna, who is a licensed massage therapist, was introduced to natural healing at a young age through her mother, and upon finishing high school, attended the Suncoast School of Massage Therapy, where she graduated in 2000. “I really love what I do,” says Donna. “I knew this was what I wanted to do right out of high school, and it has

8

DECEMBER 2013

been a passion of mine ever since. I feel very blessed that I am able to do something that I love.” Donna is accompanied by massage therapist Bronia and spa specialist Kellee; together they provide divine spa services that perfectly complement a healthy lifestyle. “Our goal is to help our clients live a healthier life,” says Donna. Althea’s services include all types of massage, customized facials, manicures and pedicures, as well as sugaring, an organic, less-painful, form of hair removal. Client Amber says, “Kellee gives the best facials! I have very sensitive skin and she structures her skin care around my needs. Kellee also provides sugaring instead of waxing, mani/pedis (done with the utmost in cleanliness) and recommends an all-natural skin care line that I have fallen in love with. I really enjoy my time at Althea Spa. It is a quiet, small office that treats you like family. The girls are wonderful and work hard to make sure your experience is what you are paying for. I won't go to a big spa again.” Donna, Bronia and Kellee truly care about helping their clients, which is why they keep their services very affordable. And, instead of up-charging for different

types of massages, you pay for the time slot and the type of massage you want to get is up to you. This allows Donna and Bronia to uniquely customize the massage to fit your specific needs, without you having to worry if you “picked” the right massage for what those needs may be. “I really dedicate my time to helping my clients, that way they can really get everything they need out of the one session,” says Donna. “I have been a fan of massage for years but had not found the ‘right' person until I found Donna and Althea Spa,” adds client Amber. “I was tired of paying money for a massage that was so-so and just didn't feel like I was getting my money's worth. Donna and Bronia are the real deal and the best I have ever been to. They are very pro-

fessional and make sure to structure your experience around your needs. I leave every massage feeling less stressed, less tense and overall, physically better. I have a stressful job as a nurse taking care of other people and Donna helps me to take care of me.” Donna says, “We focus on helping people to not only feel better but to actually be better. We are such a stressed society. I read an article listing Tampa among the top 10 cities in the U.S. for being stressed. I couldn’t believe it.” Since reading that article, Donna has really made it her mission to help Tampa residents lower their stress levels, one relaxing massage at a time. She adds, “I want to help people understand that having things done like a massage, and even things like getting a

My Experience with Althea Massage and Spa My experience with Althea started from the moment I walked in their doors and was happily welcomed by Donna. She instantly made me feel comfortable as she prepared me for my massage, asking questions about areas I

would like her to focus on, and my massage preferences. As the massage began my tensions started to slip away, and as the peaceful music played in the background I felt myself ease into relaxation. With a gentle, yet firm, touch, Donna’s hands seemed to just glide over my aching muscles, working out all the kinks and knots of a stressful week. Her massage was by far one of the best I had ever had, and when the massage came to an end, I got up feeling refreshed, with a wonderful sense of calmness.

Following the massage I met with Kellee, who then took me into another room to perform my facial. Starting with a wonderful facial cleansing, Kellee then looked at my skin under a bring light to determine the best treatments for my face, allowing her to customize the facial for my individual preferences and needs. Using Prana SpaCeuticals, an organic botanical skin care line, Kellee worked her magic, and by the time she was done my face was smoother and fresher than I have seen

in a long time. “Everything we do is natural,” says Kellee. “All of the facial products in the Prana SpaCeuticals line are natural and made from organic products.” After the facial, Kellee led me over to Althea’s comfy couch and sat me down for one of her wonderful pedicures. The pedicure was fabulous and Kellee did a great job polishing my toes! Donna says, “We have the cleanest and most eco-friendly pedicure spa. You aren’t going to receive a cleaner or better pedicure in Tampa.” Many people view going to a spa as a luxury, when in actuality it should be a necessity. It is important to take time to decompress; it can not only help to improve your physical health, but your mental health as well. So, when you are ready to take a break and make some time to unwind from a hectic schedule give Althea Massage and Spa a call – you will be glad you did! Althea Massage and Spa is located at 3802 Ehrlich Road, Suite 303 in Tampa on the Southwest corner of Ehrlich Road and Dale Mabry Hwy. The spa is open by appointment Mon. – Sat. 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call (813) 690-3619 or visit their website at www.AltheaWellnessSpa.com.

GetMoreOffers.Com is the New Face of Real Estate By Julie Kanehl Are you moving? Would you like to put your house on the market, but aren’t sure where to start or who you can trust? Have you thought about selling the house yourself, but aren’t sure how to get started? Do you wish you didn’t have to give so much commission to Realtors®, when you’re happy to do a majority of the work yourself, like designing and creating an MLS listing and showing your house? GetMoreOffers.Com is the affordable way to list your home, giving sellers the ultimate control over the sale, and on a site that attracts more than 100,000 buyers per month! All of this while being backed by a licensed experienced Real Estate Company and a Broker who sticks to his guns. This is the new face of real estate. Long ago, when the real estate world was a different place, a Realtor® would be the only one who could find you a listing, but with today’s technology, usually it’s the buyer that ends up finding the home they want to live in by finding the listing themselves online and through websites that show MLS listings. Clearly, the market and the face of

10

DECEMBER 2013

real estate have changed, so doesn’t it makes sense that the way we would go about selling our houses would change as well? Today, homeowners are more hands-on than they were in bygone years, and every penny counts. Selling your home by yourself can be an overwhelming experience, but handing all of the control over to a Realtor® who takes a chunk of the percentage home at the end of the day can make sellers feel like they’re losing on the deal. GetMoreOffers.Com is a safe middle ground for sellers, which gives them control of the process while saving them money. No-Nonsense, Discount Real Estate for Everyone ADDvantage Real Estate, as the authorized Florida brokerage of GetMoreOffers.Com, offers discount listing services all over Florida, from Jacksonville and the Panhandle, all the way down to the Keys. Co-created by Broker Keith Gordon, who has nearly 30 years of experience in Florida, GetMoreOffers.Com offers discount real estate that can be tailor-made to suit each homeowner. Together with Erin Knorr, CEO

of GetMoreOffers.com, who brought the amazing software to life, they’ve helped thousands of people sell their homes safely and affordably. Typically, in a full-service listing, buyers have to sign an agreement that states that they will work with one particular Realtor® for a period of time, usually six months, which eliminates the possibility of selling the home themselves in that time, even if a buyer shows up on their doorstep. Also, a 6% commission is generally shared between the listing agent and the selling agent, which means more money out of pocket for the homeowner. The GetMoreOffers.Com advantage is that the seller doesn’t have to pay a listing commission, which is usually a savings of around 3% of the final sale of the house. According to www.GetMoreOffers.Com, with an ADDvantage flat fee MLS listing, if you are successful in finding a buyer for your property without the assistance of a real estate agent, then you would pay NO commission; just the ADDvantage flat fee. It’s that simple.”

Broker Keith Gordon GetMoreOffers.com gives sellers “real time” control of the selling of their home, by offering sellers the opportunity to purchase an MLS listing at an affordable flat fee, as well as creating an interactive portal where sellers can manage their listing, personalize it, add pictures and

make adjustments to price, and even determine the buyer’s agent’s fee. Gordon says, “Everything happens in real time, seamlessly, and electronically.” Yuri Zygala said, “We just closed on the sale of our home and could not be happier with the results. We chose to use GetMoreOffers.com and ADDvantage Real Estate after a sale fell through using our listing agent. Making this choice was the best thing we did. Selling by owner and being the ones scheduling all showings we made over $15,000 profit above what we would have made using a listing agent. We listed on a Sunday, and had a signed cash offer 7 days later. I highly recommend using GetMoreOffers.com for your next home sale.” The GetMoreOffers.Com Advantage Having control doesn’t mean you won’t get the support you need during the sale of your home. GetMoreOffers.com offers amazing customer service to both the seller, and the interested parties, whether buyers or Realtors®. For a flat fee of just $299, your house can be “on the market” and on MLS within 24 hours. Your listing will benefit from premium internet marketing that offers up to 25 photos,

a guarantee that it will show on your local boards, will be Showcased on Realtor.com as well as on partnered sites, including Zillow, Homes.com, Craigslist, Yahoo Real Estate, Trulia and more. The best part is that you, the seller, will control everything from the price of your house to when you’re available to show your house to interested parties. Now, if you love the idea of taking that hands-on approach, but want the support and backing of a Real Estate agent for making sure that your buyers are pre-qualified, or to know when to negotiate, or when not to, then you might prefer GetMoreOffers.Com’s Professional ADDvantage Program, which includes everything from negotiating to the organizing and preparing all of the legal documentation that goes along with selling a home. This hybrid program is the best of both worlds, and is a huge value to sellers. This program is only $499 upfront, and just 3/4 of 1% due at closing (with a minimum of $1500). Gordon says, “Sellers who go with this program also get me, and I’m a no-nonsense discount broker. I use non-traditional negotiating techniques that save sellers money.” He adds, “I do this because I believe that buyers don’t go away after they’ve made an

offer. If they’ve made an offer, they’ve already committed to buying your house, so I don’t always believe in countering.” While Keith Gordon also offers full service real estate services through his full service brokerage, Principal 1 Realty, he says many sellers and even full service agents utilize the discount services of GetMoreOffers.com and ADDvantage Real Estate due to the value and extensive coverage of MLS systems throughout the state. (Many agents get listings outside of their board coverage area and look to GetMoreOffers.com to list their out-of-area listings rather than be subjected to the expensive fees to join the MLS themselves.) Since GetMoreOffers.com is affiliated with Frontier National Title and Patriot Lending, all of a seller’s real estate needs can be handled in-house, from selling a house, or being approved, to buying a new one.

Jurgen Schmidt said, “As a Realtor/Broker at a full-service firm, when it came time to list my out-of-state property I never thought I would consider using a discount Brokerage agency, but… I’m so glad I did! Keith and his team at ADDvantage were awesome, the service and support were exceptional and they got results in no time! The entire experience far exceeded my expectations and I wouldn’t hesitate for an instant to use ADDvantage again or recommend them to everyone.” If you are looking to sell your house and save money while you’re at it, try GetMoreOffers.com and experience the new face of real estate. GetMoreOffers.com is open and online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To speak to an agent or to get more information, please call 1-877-232-9695.

Fish Company – Inspired by Faith and the Desire to Help Orphans Globally By Lenay Ruhl Some people write out proposals, researching and developing complex plans before starting a business. For the ladies of Fish Company it was simple; their faith was the foundation that inspired their business. Fish Co. is based on the story in the Bible of Jesus feeding the 5,000. As the story goes, Jesus was preaching to the masses. They had been listening to him speak all day and they were hungry. The disciples searched for food to feed them, but all it took was the offering of a small boy who had only five tiny loaves of bread and two fish for Jesus to create a miracle. As the disciples divided the food into baskets to distribute to the people, they were surprised when this small boy’s offerings provided enough food to feed the multitudes with plenty to spare. Fish Co. uses the model of this miracle as their guiding principle, believing that God will take what fish they have to offer, multiply them and use those fish to change the lives of orphans in need. They’ve exchanged loaves for handmade dolls and fish for purses, and their “crowds” are the

more than 153,000,000 orphans around the world. Fish Co. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing homes for orphans throughout the world through the creation, sales and exchange of products using donated goods and materials. Fish Co.’s mission is both global and local. They are a local ministry, whose mission translates to a global change. Globally they are building orphanages and sending their dolls to comfort orphan children. Locally they are empowering and encouraging people of all ages to offer their gifts and skills to make a difference. All the items that Fish Co. has to offer are individually made and hand sewn using 100 percent donated materials. Those items are then sold and 100 percent of the proceeds are used to change the lives of orphans. Currently Fish Co. is partnered with ICM, International Cooperating Ministries, to build an orphanage in Uganda. “It’s a beautiful exchange,” said Mary Carli, Fish Co. Treasurer, when referring to the trading of purses and babies

That trip served as the spark to ignite the passion each of these ladies felt to both use their creative talents and change the lives of children in need. “It’s been amazing to see God at work,” said Julie, “after only a few months of ministry we are well on our way to meeting our first goal of raising funds to build an orphanage in Uganda.” Part of what makes Fish Co. special is that it is run entirely by volunteers. They do everything from cutting and sewing fabric to sweeping floors and sending ‘Thank You’ cards. Vol-

wishes have gone unanswered, and they are continually finding people who are donating the things they need, including everything from thread to the flooring under their feet. Creating their bags and babies in their workshop, they have an open door policy for those who would like to come by and be a part of their ministry. They are currently selling their bags on facebook and their website www.fishcompany.org. They also frequently make appearances at craft shows and other events. The ladies of Fish Co. have a beautiful story to tell and want to share that story with the world.

“What we believe God can do with this is what drives us,” said Mary. The ladies laugh together, dreaming of Fish Co. expanding to other cities. They have shameless idealism and can imagine a world where every child has a home; where people from all over bring their own “fish” to the table, joining efforts in raising money to better the lives of orphans. unteer Kirsten Murawski said, “We’re always looking for donations, and more help.” Another thing that makes Fish Co. special is that it is a family venture. Cindy and Julie are sisters and Dottie is their mom. Their husbands and children even get involved. “It really is a special thing, we have our family working together and friends frequently dropping by to lend a hand and bring donations,” added Julie. For them, this all goes back to the bible story of Jesus with the loaves of bread and fish; everyone gives what they can. As Kirsten put it, none of their

“Twinz” Continued from page 1 says Richard. “We are one of those places where we call our customers by their names. You are not just another ticket number. What I love most about Tampa is that it is a melting pot of cultures. A lot of people have migrated here from other places, bringing with them the diversity of the cuisine from their different regions.” At Twinz, Richard and Robert, and the rest of their awesome staff, do an excellent job of replicating these authentically diverse cuisines and encompassing them into their menu. Robert and Richard are so appreciative for this opportunity to serve the Carrollwood community, and attribute their success to the hard work ethic and cooking abilities taught to them by their loving mother. Robert says, “None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for our mother. May she rest in peace. She changed our family forever. She encouraged us to succeed. Made with their signature beef blend, the Mushroom Swiss burger is a hearty burger with a whole lot of flavor, and let me just say, you can definitely taste the difference in their beef! Cooked to perfection, and topped with mayo, baby portabella mushrooms, caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, with each bite the burger seemed to just melt in my mouth. Wings are another huge seller at Twinz, and are something that Richard and Robert really take pride in. Richard says, “Everybody expects us to have good hot dogs, but our secret is in our wings. The wings we serve are what other wing places that specialize in wings should be serving.” So, naturally, we had to try some of their wings; their recommendation – the Snow Bird Rob and Rich wings. How I would describe these wings – divine! Covered in their homemade tangy BBQ sauce and topped with blue cheese crumbles, before being put in a steamer to further melt the cheese, these were by far some of the best wings I have ever tasted! Have a sweet tooth? The delicious hand-spun shakes at Twinz are sure to hit the spot, and perfectly accompany everything and anything on the Twinz menu. As you can see, Twinz showcases a nice variety of options for people of all tastes and preferences, and their family-friendly atmosphere and excellent share size portions on many of their menu items, make it the ideal place for family gatherings and group parties. When asked what he would recommend to new customers, Robert replies, “Everything! There is nothing on my menu that I don’t like.” With their amazing wings, and numerous flat screen TVs showing the

NFL Sunday Ticket, it is no wonder why Twinz has become one of Carrollwood’s favorite stops for Football Sundays. Sunday specials include 20 wings and a large fry basket for $19.99, and four sliders and 20 wings for $24.99. Robert and Richard take being a part of Carrollwood very seriously and are constantly finding new ways to give back to the local community. They are actively involved with Carrollwood Elementary and Lake Magdalene Elementary and do fundraisers throughout the year to donate to the Parent Teacher Associations. “We Stay involved with the community,” says Robert. Their newest local fundraiser, called Turkeys for Tampa, has come just in time for the holidays. For the month of December, for every footlong Tampa Bay Dog sold, Twinz will donate $1 towards the purchase of Turkeys, which Richard and Robert plan on buying and donating to Metropolitan Ministries. “Our goal is to be able to donate 100 turkeys,” says Robert. They will also have a place where you can donate canned goods, and as a way of saying thank-you Twinz will take a percentage off your bill at the register whenever you donate. “You have to give back,” adds Robert. “We are so rooted in our business and our community. This is where we live. This is our home.” Twinz Big City Hotdogs is located at 13149 North Dale Mabry Hwy., Suite F in Tampa on the corner of Fletcher and Dale Mabry. Celebrate the Holidays with Whole Foods Market Carrollwood As you continue your journey through the holidays, you’re probably starting to plan for Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s get togethers. Much like Thanksgiving, these are difficult events to execute while maintaining a healthy approach. But it is possible, so stick with me to learn some simple ways to keep your weight down during the most indulgent season of the year. First and foremost, find time to exercise. This is the number one activity I find that people cut out. I’ve heard every single excuse in the book, but what it all comes down to is this: your health is worth 30 to 60 minutes a day. The American Heart Association recommends 30 or more minutes of medium intensity activity at least five days a week -- and remember, something is always better than nothing. Second, don’t eat just because there’s food. Hand in hand with this is the idea of eating until you are satisfied, not overstuffed. There are a lot of numbers thrown around when people give advice on how long it takes for your stomach and brain to register

about how full you are, but just remember that there is a lag. Eat slowly, eat with purpose and remember to listen closely for your body’s signals. Whole foods with healthy fats can help fill you up and keep you satied like no others. Remember, the lethargy that comes with overconsumption plays directly into my first point, so don’t over eat and then go sit on the couch! Third, offer healthy options for snacking -- and more importantly, opt not to have the other stuff. One of the most common mistakes party hosts make is to offer healthy options, like veggie platters, mixed fruit salads or pick-your-toppings salad bar, but they also have a bowl of chips, some sour cream and onion dip or a platter of chicken wings. Rise above the desire to offer these items and stick with (the often less expensive) healthier treats. If you don’t have the bad stuff around, then you simply cannot eat it. Lastly, do not skip meals to make up for poor eating choices. This is one of the things I hear other people advocating and it makes my heart sink. Often times with the focus on calorie counting comes a desire to skip meals

in order to “make up for” overeating at other times of the day. Unfortunately your digestive system does not tell time like your brain. Skipping meals does very little in the way of making up the caloric difference, but it is harmful the next time you sit down to eat (and are positively ravished) and makes it exceptionally hard to control your intake. If you have a “bad meal” don’t take your next meal time off, instead choose some nutrient
