When you suffer from back or neck pain, it can honestly feel like the world is crumbling around you. Everything suddenly becomes difficult. Where others can breeze through their day, taking for granted each step that they take, walking, shopping and even driving can be more than you can bear. More people suffer from back pain than almost any other chronic pain out there, but when it’s serious, and you need medical attention, why go to someone less experienced when you could go to a nationally recognized neurosurgeon like Dr. George Giannakopoulos, M.D.? Dr. Giannakopoulos has been practicing in the area for nearly 20

years, and has performed well over 7,000 successful spine surgeries in that time. His Spine Center of Excellence Dr. Giannakopoulos is located in Port Richey, just a few minutes north of Gulf View Square Mall on U.S. Highway 19, and he has locations in Trinity and in Brooksville as well to accommodate his patients. In addition to teaching seminars and keeping office hours at his three locations, Dr. Giannakopoulos performs surgeries at The Medical

Center of Trinity, Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson, Oak Hill Hospital and the Brooksville Regional Hospital. One of the most experienced spine surgeons in the country, Dr. Giannakopoulos attended Rutgers University in New Jersey and St. George’s University where he earned his medical degree at The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1987. In 1988 he completed his internship in general surgery at The University of Rochester, followed by completing a fellowship at the University of Massachusetts in the area of Clinical Neurosurgery. Dr. Giannakopoulos completed his residency at the See “Spine Center” on page 42

Since my family and I first moved to Westchase, I’ve quite often found myself more apt to head west when leaving the area. We’ve found some great restaurants, parks, and of course beaches in that direction. And, now we’ve got a great new restaurant to add to our list of favorites – Positano’s Ristorante Italiano. Located at the corner of Tampa Road and Lake St. George in the Shoppes at Cloverplace, Positano’s serves delicious, classic Italian food that is sure to delight all of your senses. Owners Harry and Jiske Ong had spent most of their lives in the restaurant business before opening Posi-

tano’s, and their attention to customers and love of food is evident from the moment you walk through their doors. “We prepare our food with the finest and freshest ingredients,” says Harry. “We are happy to have a restaurant that so many people in our community enjoy. We have recently added seasonal specials made with local produce. These have been a big hit with many of our customers.” One happy customer writes, “Positano’s has become my go-to restaurant when I want a great Italian meal. The food is consistently excellent. “Umbrellas for Peace” Created a Colorful Display of Togetherness in Tampa The kickoff to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay’s new awareness and recruitment campaign was a great success. Nearly 200 volunteer mentors, parents, and children attended “Umbrellas for Peace” on Sunday, July 14, at the Glazer Children’s Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. Bigs (volunteer mentors) and Littles (children) spent time discussing their thoughts about peace and helping the community, while painting umbrellas with messages of hope at the museum. Guided by stilt walkers from Busch Gardens, they then showcased their masterpieces during a colorful parade around Curtis Hixon Park. The parade culminated in the group forming a heart shape in the middle of the park. The “heart” is part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo. (See photos.) Umbrellas for Peace started out as art therapy for people affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has since blossomed into a global peace initiative. More than 2-million people from 29 countries have participated in artist Matt Lamb’s “Umbrellas for Peace” concept. Sunday was be the first time the event was held in Tampa. When initially presented with the idea, Stephen Koch, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Inc., felt it was a perfect tie-in See “Peace” on page 36

Medical Center of Trinity Announces Major Advancement in the Treatment of Lung Cancer Medical Center of Trinity announced a major addition to its cancer treatment arsenal. and is now utilizing Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB) ™ to access and biopsy lesions deep in the lung. The superDimension® i-Logic™ System is a minimally invasive option for patients who have been identified as having a small or hardto-reach lesion on their lung that is inaccessible through traditional bronchoscope. The ENB procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that uses the patient’s natural airways to reach these particular masses. ENB is typically an outpatient pro-

cedure and minimizes the need for more invasive surgical procedures to assess lesions in the distant regions of the lung, where more than two-thirds of all cancers are found. This new procedure minimizes the need for more conventional assessments, such as thorascopic or percutaneous needle biopsy, which may require an inpatient stay and can cause complications such as a collapsed lung. This procedure may be used when an abnormal finding in a distant part of the lung has been found on an x-ray, CT scan or PET-CT scan that may be caused by infection, inflammation or cancer. Small lesions in the outer area of the lung are difficult to reach for diagnosis and treatment. “Traditional bronchoscopy frequently fails to reach the outer areas of the lungs often leading to more invasive surgical options for diagnosis,” says Dr. Nagesh Salian, pulmonologist. The Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® will allow a physician to locate, test, diagnose, and potentially treat the one legion even in the outer areas of the lungs,” he added. How does it work? After a lesion has been detected through CT, the patient’s scan is loaded into planning software that creates a 3D roadmap of the lungs. A bronchoscope is placed through the pa-

tient’s mouth and into the airways of the lungs. The ENB’s catheters are next placed in the channel of the bronchoscope. The electromagnetic sensors in the catheters guide the physician to the targeted lesion. Once there, the guide catheter is removed and the extended working channel catheter remains. Biopsy tools are then placed through the working catheter to obtain tissue samples for testing and diagnosis. Upon completion of the procedure, the patient goes to recovery and, in the vast majority of cases, discharged home. “Bringing this technology to our community is a huge step forward,” said

Lawrence Hochman, DO, FACRO (Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncologists), “This gives our patients access to diagnostic and treatment options on par with university centers. “We are proud to offer this technology to the community which further enhances our Accredited Cancer Program by the Commission on Cancer,” said Leigh Massengill, CEO of Medical Center of Trinity. “News that a spot (lesion), deep in your lung, has been found and a lung biopsy needs to be performed raises many concerns and emotions. It is important to know that you may have options close to home.”

North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women: The Fun Workout By Julie Kanehl It’s 5:30 in the morning, and I’m up before the sun to go and try this boot camp that everyone’s been raving about for years, and I’m thinking, it can’t be that good. Well, spoiler alert: I LOVED IT. Not only did I get an amazing workout; I met a lot of great people and most importantly had a great time – all before most people even started their day. I’ve never been one of those who can’t wait to get to the gym, or to get a few miles under their belt. I don’t run for fun! I need some motivation! Well, if you want some help with motivation or are bored with the sameold routine and want a challenging workout that changes every day; then you should definitely try the North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women. Trust me, women don’t get up this early for nothing. It has to be amazing, awesome and worth it – and it is. While doing a few warm-up laps around the car loop of Brooker Creek Elementary School before dawn, I

10

asked the other women what made this boot camp so special, and the answer was always John’s high energy, motivational approach. I noticed that there were women there of all fitness levels, ages and races simply focusing on themselves for a few minutes; getting fresh air, moving their bodies, and being physically productive for themselves. Let’s face it, most women put everyone else first. I could tell that this time was special to them. I realized that this hour was going to be special to me as well, and it was. It also helps that the Owner, Coach, and Fitness Trainer Extraordinaire, John Kent, is high energy, highly personable, and sincerely interested in helping his campers become better versions of themselves. John really knows his stuff, and he takes the time to make sure that each and every woman who attends his boot camp is working out safely and effectively at the pace that is right for them. He says, “When women are up and moving and having fun, it takes the work part out of the workout.” John has more than 10 years of

Once I John Kent, owner and operator of was there – it was amazing! to workout techniques that work for your body. For one hour a day, five days a week for four weeks, women get more than a great workout; they gain confidence and even hope. In fact, it’s a very liberating thing to get away from the monotony of the gym and to be with a group of women outside. It’s not a competitive spirit, but a feeling of camaraderie that energizes you. Every day is different at boot camp, and you never know what you’ll be doing next, but that’s part of the fun! A typical hour will include cardio, mat-work, some weight training, balance training, core work, interval

training, walking, running, sprinting and more. John even uses games, obstacles and group activities to keep you moving. It’s hard to give up when your teammates are waiting on you! One camper said, “I have tried other things, but I always end up coming back. No one motivates me like John.” He is hard to ignore, what with his bullhorn, his high-energy music, and the quick pace of the program. Every fivesix minutes you’re doing something totally different, and the fun part is, you’re never sure what it’s going to be! One thing’s for sure, you’re going to feel the workout, and feel good about the workout. Julie Wooten, who attends regularly, said, “At Boot Camp, the women encourage one another. We’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders. I’ve met the best people. John sets a positive upbeat tone and is always intro-

ducing new exercises. Every day is a great day at Boot Camp.” Make Time for You! Is 5:30 a.m. too early? You should try it! Still too early? There’s a 9 a.m. boot camp as well that is held at beautiful John Chestnut Park. No matter which time you come, don’t let anything get in the way of a healthier you. You have one life, one body, and one chance to use it or lose it. It’s never too late to turn it around, to make a change, to have the life you want to have. The key is eating right, moving your body, and believing you can do it. Trish Jones said, “I’m almost 50. I was bored going to the gym, but thought boot camp was out of my league. But John showed me it wasn’t. Now I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve lost weight and have more stamina. I’m amazed at what I can do every day. John is so good at keeping you motivated and helping you overcome your excuses. Boot Camp is my space, my time, just for me.” John is so sure that you will enjoy

the program, that he offers a moneyback guarantee. He also offers a 50% discount for first-time campers, so what are you waiting for? The North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women is an affordable, fun and practical way to get in the best shape of your life. Every Child Deserves a Voice Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech

By Dara Tucker Saturday, October 19, at the Carillon Parkway/Catalina Marketing Field the 4th annual Tampa Bay Walks for Talk to benefit children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech will be held. The event is a family-fun filled day including a walk, lunch, and games for kids. On-site registration and check-in begins at 10 a.m., and the walk begins promptly at 11:15 a.m. There is a family meet and greet after the walk at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CASANA’s (The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America) apraxia programs and research. CASANA is a source of in-

14

spiration and instrumental in helping many families and professionals gain the knowledge in apraxia needed to move children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) to develop meaningful speech. For many families it is the first place they look to for support after their child is diagnosed. According to CASANA Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor speech disorder that first becomes apparent as a young child is learning speech. For reasons not yet fully understood, children with apraxia of speech have great difficulty planning and producing the precise, highly refined and specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw and palate that are necessary for intelligible speech. Apraxia of speech is sometimes known as verbal apraxia, developmental apraxia of speech, or verbal dyspraxia. The most important concept is the root word “praxis.” Praxis means

planned movement. To some degree or another, a child with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech has difficulty programming and planning speech movements. Apraxia of speech is a specific speech disorder. This difficulty in planning speech movements is the missing key of childhood apraxia of speech. The challenge and difficulty that children with apraxia have in creating speech can be confusing to parents, especially when they observe the skill of learning to speak developing, seemingly without effort, in other children. Brenae Solis, the walk coordinator for Tampa Bay, turned to CASANA when her daughter Emily was diagnosed with apraxia at 22 months old. Brenae explains, “There was nowhere to go to in Florida for support at the time. CASANA is the national apraxia not-for-profit

September 22 to receive an official Apraxia Walk t-shirt in your size. Jen Alfieri has a team walking for her son. Jen had never heard of apraxia before her third child, Caleb, was diagnosed at 33 months. Jen explains, “I knew something was wrong when he still wasn’t talking at two-and-ahalf. I went to our pediatrician first, and then we went to Early Steps several times before we went to FDLRS (Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resource System). It was very frustrat-

ing because we were told so many different things before we got his diagnosis. He now receives support through the TALK Program in the school system and private therapy. He’s making great gains with the combination of the two. The other day he strung three words together. Every child is different. For most children speech works itself out, but Caleb was one of 1,000 that it didn’t. I encourage moms to trust your instinct if you think something in wrong. Early intervention is critical.” Join a great cause, Saturday, October 19, and have a fun day at Carillon Parkway/Catalina Marketing Field, 120 Carillon Parkway, in St. Petersburg. Adult walkers are $20, and children under 18 are $10. For more information about the walk, or to donate to the walk, visit www.apraxia-kids.org.

Make Your Home Unique with

Capital Millwork in Palm Harbor By Kim Thomas Your home is the one place where you can truly showcase your uniqueness. You carefully plan your furnishings and artwork, choosing what you love and what you feel is representative of you. Often, homeowners focus on updating the rugs and furnishings, but settle with keeping the same basic cabinet knobs and plain mouldings that were there the day they moved in. There is no better way to truly set your home apart than by customizing it with beautiful hardware and custom moldings. Capital Millwork co-owners Bob Koch and Keith Sontag are local experts who would love to show you how, just as new pillows and accessories are an inexpensive way to breathe new life into a room, new cabinet hardware is an inexpensive way to give your kitchen or bathroom a rich, custom look. You’ll find far more than hardware at Capital Millwork, which is

18

your local source for all types of custom mouldings, stair parts, replacement doors and windows and even beautiful hardwood flooring. Why settle for what you can find at “big box stores” when Capital Millwork can give you so many more choices? And if you have a hard time visualizing what different door styles will look like, don’t fret, Capital Millwork has a “virtual designer” computer program where with a photo of the front of your home, you can literally try out different styles. Located in Palm Harbor at the corner of U.S. 19 North and Tampa Road in the Palm Lake Plaza, Capital Millwork was born five years ago when Bob Koch, in the industry since 1986, became frustrated about not having a knowledgeable source for high quality, unique products such as decorative hardware, architectural hardware and truly custom millwork. Not willing to make his clients settle for whatever was available at the home

supply stores, he opened Capital Millwork. While it is very convenient to its East Lake customers, the great selection, competitive prices and truly custom millwork brings in customers from afar. Capital Millwork has expanded its showroom, adding an additional 2,100 square feet that will allow for the display of some of the many custom windows and doors that are available through Capital Millwork. Capital Millwork’s customers range from homeowners to business owners, designers and contractors. No

matter how big or small your job is, or your budget, the Capital Millwork team – Bob, Keith and Heather Link – can help you find the products that will make your home feel like your castle––even if your castle happened to be built 100 years ago and you want to match the original moulding. On the day I visited, Keith was working on an order of custom millwork where Capital Millwork was matching the moulding of a 1920s era South Tampa home. From simple to ornate, Capital Millwork has your custom millwork order covered.

Working with every budget, Capital Millwork can either recommend someone fantastic to install your custom order, or they can provide you with the materials you need to make everything come together beautifully. Jewelry for Your Home “It always surprises me that people would spend tens of thousands of dollars on their kitchen cabinets, yet spend only $4 or $5 dollars on decorative knobs,” says Bob. “For just a little more money, you can have hardware that you really love.”

The Capital Millwork showroom is filled to the brim with unique decorative and architectural hardware in every shape, size, color and style ranging from ultra modern pieces, to pieces reminiscent of the Renaissance. Many of the pieces are hand forged in quality materials including bronze, steel, pewter, recycled aluminum, wood, glass and even Swarovski Crystals. You won’t find these amazing pieces in a warehouse store. These are the kinds of elements that make a home unique, and turn kitchens and bathrooms into masterpieces.

Some hardware pieces are so unique that they are literally one-of-akind. From knobs made of stones that are handpicked off of the New England coast, to those that are handcarved out of the Tagua nut, known as “vegetable ivory” for its likeliness to animal ivory, Capital Millwork has unique products that allow you to bring natural elements to your home décor. Capital Millwork also offers pieces that are especially made to act as jewelry for your home, and are made of materials such as leather, mother of pearl, jade and other semi-precious stones. These pieces are generally created to act as accent pieces, where only a few pieces are necessary and can make the most visual impact, such as on a custom wet bar or on a special cabinet that houses wine. Custom Doors and Windows From inexpensive, quality utility doors to upgraded, impact-rated sliders and ornately carved wood doors, Capital Millwork carries every kind of door for the interior or exterior of your home. Bob says, “If a customer wants the same thing that the big box stores have, then we can give it to

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

them at a better price, but with Capital Millwork they have so many more choices of profiles without the upcharges.” In addition to the choices of manufactured doors made of wood, steel, fiberglass, and advanced composites, at Capital Millwork, they can build doors from scratch and they specialize in creating custom doors for the client that wants something unique. Keith says, “We can start from a blank piece of paper and design a door or we can work from a picture, but either way we can make it one-of-akind. We work with a stained glass artist who can draw out any design and implement a number of styles depending on the kind of glass.” What Capital Millwork does best is to create unique masterpieces out of the space in your home, so whether you are looking to have a grand staircase complete with a specially designed banister, and stair parts, or you are looking to add decorative mouldings to the walls or ceilings, Capital Millwork can help you find that something special that will make your home exactly what you want. Capital Millwork has products that you just can’t find anywhere else. They will really listen to what you say and will help you find the products that reflect your own personal style. Take the time to stop in and meet Bob, Keith and Heather, and let them show you how easy it is to turn your home into a showplace! Capital Millwork is located at 32704 U.S. Hwy. 19 North in Palm Harbor. The showroom is open Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and by appointment. The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group is a Good Choice for Your Family By Julie Kanehl When you have a baby, everything changes, and suddenly it’s so important to have a doctor for your child – someone that you can trust and turn to when the most important person in your life is sick. As your family grows, your children will be at the doctor a lot for checkups, physicals, immunizations, and regular runof-the-mill childhood illnesses – in other words, you’ll be there a lot! That’s why it’s so important to have a doctor at the ready that takes the time to know you and your family. Located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Boulevard, The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group is convenient to Trinity, East Lake, New Port Richey and Tarpon Springs. Created by a husband and wife doctor team whose practice and family have grown together within our community for the last 16 years, The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group is a great choice for families. Their beautiful office is on the second floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building, and their waiting room

30

is divided so that children who are well don’t have to sit with the children who are sick. This is so nice for parents who are taking their children in for well visits, physicals and shots. The friendly staff makes everyone feel comfortable, and they make an effort to value everyone’s time by seeing their patients as soon as they can. Meet the Doctors! Douglass M. Hasell, M.D. graduated with honors from The University of California in Santa Barbara before receiving his M.D. at The Medical University of South Carolina. After earning his M.D., he completed his Residency at the University of California in Irvine, where he met his wife, Thuy T. Pham, M.D., who was also completing her Residency in Pediatrics. Dr. Pham’s background is quite impressive. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, and earned her M.D. at the University of California in San Diego in 1988. Dr. Pham is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and is the only pediatrician who is also a Board Certified Lactation Consultant in the Tampa Bay Area. Dr. Pham is an expert at helping new nurs-

Board Certified Pediatricians and are Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Drs. Hasell and Pham have an incredible background that includes experience overseas where they had to be extremely resourceful working with children who were extremely sick. That experience, on top of their formal education, and their practical education as parents, make them an amazing pediatric team. Over the years, the staff has grown to include Dr. Sheridan Hernandez, M.D. who was born in the U.K. and moved to the U.S. when she was a teenager. Dr. Hernandez graduated Summa Cum Laude from the City College of New York before earning her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. She completed her pediatric residency training at Columbia Medical Center in New York City. As parents themselves, the doctors at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group truly understand their role in your family’s life. Speaking of families, Dr. Hernandez’s daughter, Nathalie, is a very popular person at the practice, because she was recently a contestant on NBC’s The Voice! Dr. Hasell and

Pham and their children are also very musical. In fact Dr. Hasell and his children have a band called Triple Haze, and this fall Triple Haze along with Nathalie Hernandez will be performing to live audiences, including a fundraiser benefit promoting Skin Cancer screenings. Christopher Pope, ARNP, CPNP, is also popular around the practice, especially with the kids! His upbeat and positive attitude is just one of the things that families who go to The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group are talking about. Chris Pope is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with his B.S. in nursing before earning his Masters in Nursing at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Chris has specialized in pediatrics since 1996 including three years at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida and four years at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. One of the things that Chris Pope facilitates is a great program at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group called Fit4AllKids Weight Management and Fitness. This is a program developed by All Children’s Hospital aimed at helping families change the way they look at nutrition. The obesity epidemic is real,

and it’s affecting our families, which is why nutrition is something that all of the doctors and staff at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group are passionate about. Drs. Hasell and Pham have received additional training in nutrition so they can help their patients achieve the highest standards in nutrition. “We train together, which makes us very consistent in how we practice,” says Dr. Hasell. “We’re more of a family, we have one location, and we get to know our families.” Dr. Pham adds, “We take a more personal approach. One of our biggest passions is to inspire parents and families to be in charge of their health to become fit and healthy as a whole – body, mind and spirit.” From Newborn Colic to College Colds Whether you’re up in the middle of the night with your toddler who has a fever, or your teenager has the flu, the doctors at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group are ready. From their focus on the importance of breastfeeding and healthy eating, to common colds, to menstruation and hormones, they’ve got you covered. Their focus is on consistent, personal attention for their patients. From newborns to young adults, no

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

matter how complex the medical poblem, they are there to both comfort and advise. For parents who are expecting, it’s popular to come in and meet your pediatrician and to form a relationship, because you don’t want to wait until a baby is sick and fussy to decide whom to see. Dr. Hasell says, “We encourage people to come in and meet us.” Dr. Hasell says, “We are on staff at Mease Countryside Hospital, The Medical Center of Trinity, and Florida Hospital North Pinellas, which used to be Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, and we are on the Affiliate Staff at All Children’s. We enjoy going to the hospital to meet the babies who will be coming to our practice. “ As kids grow, it’s important that they get used to seeing a doctor regularly, especially for well visits, because it gives them a chance to ask questions of their doctor that they might not ask their parents. This is especially important in the teen years. Dr. Hasell says, “We see a lot of patients with upper respiratory tract infections, ear infections, stomach viruses. We also help children with special needs, and we diagnose and treat ADD and ADHD.” Dr. Pham says, “We see a lot of

adolescents. It’s good that they get used to going to a checkup every year, because it teaches them to put the responsibility of their health into their hands. If they get used to going when they’re well, they’ll feel comfortable talking to a doctor that they trust when they have a problem.” They see it all at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group, making it easy for parents to know that they are in good hands, with experienced medical professionals. In fact, for the past 16 years, Dr. Hasell has been the Medical Director for the Pasco Child Protection Team, helping to diagnose and treat children who may have been abused. Dr. Hasell is also a Trinity Rotary Club member, which he says he enjoys because all of the funds raised go towards children’s charities. If you’re looking for a pediatric practice for your family, choose The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Blvd., Suite 235 in Trinity, on the 2nd floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building. “Peace” Continued from page 3 with our new recruitment initiative. “Just like umbrellas shield us from the rain and storms, good mentors can shield kids from some of life’s harsher elements,” Koch said. In coming months, Big Brothers Big Sisters will host and partner in events intended to spur discussion about the need for mentors, especially men. Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters matched more than 1,700 kids with mentors in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties. Yet, more than 600 children remain on the waiting list. “Spine Center” Continued from page 1 Hahnemann University Program in Neurosurgery in 1994, and passed the American Board of Neurological Surgery with the distinct honor of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Giannakopoulos has been both the Chief of Staff and The Chairman of Surgery at both Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and at the former Community Hospital in New Port Richey. While Dr. Giannakopoulos is known for everything from successful spine surgeries to removing brain tumors, I know Dr. Giannakopoulos as my doctor. After getting into a car accident in 2009, and having a terrible reaction to an epidural steroid injection given to me by another doctor, Dr. Giannakopoulos was the first physician to really sit down with me and look at all of my films. Dr. Giannakopoulos ordered his own film, and was able to properly diagnose my back and neck problems. Since then, he has been a great support to me. I can honestly recommend him personally to everyone I meet. He is knowledgeable, experienced, kind and professional.

42

While Dr. Giannakopoulos is a keenly skilled surgeon, he prefers to provide conservative treatment options where possible. Unlike other doctors who are quick to provide prescription pain pills, Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff shy away from doing so. Instead they focus on providing safe and conservative techniques like bracing, physical therapy and interventional pain treatments like Facet Blocks, Epidural Injections and Radiofrequent Nerve Ablations. When the conservative approach is no longer working, Dr. Giannakopoulos is the person to turn to for surgery. He has more hours in the O.R. than many of the other neurosurgeons in the state, and he has also trained extensively in microscopic surgeries. In fact, all of his procedures are performed using microscopic technology. Dr. Giannakopoulos can perform every kind of spinal surgery from minimally invasive surgeries, to surgeries such as Laminectomies, Laminotomies, Foraminotomies, Microdiscectomies and brain surgeries. One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s patients said, “I have been seeing the Doctor for seven years now. He has kept me out of pain. Last week he per-

The Spine Center of Excellence in Trinity offers a comprehensive and conservative approach to spinal care and when surgery is necessary, you will be in the excellent care of Neurosurgeon, George Giannakopoulos, M.D. formed a laminectomy on L4/5 and it went perfectly. I highly recommend Dr. Giannakopoulos.” Dr. Giannakopoulos also specializes in treating Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spine that is caused by the natural wear and tear that our spines experience in our lifetimes. In fact, he believes that this is the #1 spine problem that faces the elderly. Spinal Stenosis causes pain and a problem straightening the spine, leading to a bending over or a haunch. Unfortunately many elderly folks think

that this is just a part of aging that they have to learn to live with, but that’s not necessarily the case. “My focus is to help prevent patients from becoming paralyzed,” says Dr. Giannakopoulos. “If a patient who used to be able to walk two miles can’t get around the grocery store without pain, I can help them. The philosophy of the Neurosurgeon is to restore function and to preserve neurological functions. What happens in the case of severe Spinal Stenosis is that something is encroaching on the spinal

canal, and to cure the problem, you really need to operate. This kind of surgery is safe and provides between 85% and 90% relief of symptoms, and the recovery is generally very quick.” One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s patients wrote, “My mother has had three cervical surgeries and is heading for her first lumbar surgery this week…The staff is always very caring and take care of my questions and FMLA paperwork in record time. They have offered assurances that all will be taken care of and it was done as stated. They even coordinated home nursing care for my mom since I can’t be there for the full six weeks of recovery. When she told me she needed the lumbar surgery, I wanted to make sure Dr. G was the only doctor to have anything to do with her surgery and he is. I’m very happy to know that Dr. G is so thorough and as skilled as he

is. Mom’s recovery has always been weeks less than predicted and she is in her early 60s. Patience is a virtue and his staff is nothing but.” Whether you are having lower back pain, neck pain, suffering from Spinal Stenosis, or are having numbness or weakness in your extremities, Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff can help get you back on your feet again. I know because he really helped me. The Spine Center of Excellence has three locations. The main office is located at 11425 US Hwy 19 in Port Richey. The Brooksville office is located at 11341 Cortez Blvd, and the Trinity location is conveniently located at 2433 Country Place Blvd. For more information or to make an appointment please call (727) 861-2332.

“Positano’s” Continued from page 1 crusty. My favorite dish is the Penne Alla Vodka. The sauce is so yummy. The house wines are great and reasonably priced. Owner Jiske Ong greets you at the door and she's very warm and welcoming. Try Positano’s once and you'll keep going back.” The dinner menu features amazing appetizers like Clams Marechiara – baby clams sautéed in garlic, fresh basil and white wine, with a touch of marinara – and lightly fried Calamari tossed in a sweet and spicy cherry pepper sauce. They also have Antipasti plates, Bruschetta, and Fiocchi – pasta purses filled with a blend of four cheeses and pears, topped with a prosciutto and basil, served in a rosemary butter sauce. The house and Caesar salads at Positano’s are a perfect start to your meal. The house salad has homemade balsamic vinaigrette tossed with a fresh spring mix, toasted almond slivers, dried cranberries, and a sprinkling of feta. The Caesar has just the right combination of romaine lettuce, garlic croutons, and shaved Parmesan with a rich Caesar dressing. As for your meal, you have a hard

decision ahead of you – do you go with one of the authentic Neapolitan style wood-fired pizzas or one of their meat specialties, such as their veal, chicken or seafood; or do you choose one of the fabulous pasta dishes, with their delectable made-from-scratch sauces? Harry and Jiske remodeled Positano’s with the goal of creating mouthwatering pizzas, and Harry is usually the one manning the 800 degree wood-fired oven, so you know your pizza will be great. Whether you want to go with a classic Margherita, a savory Puttanesca, or one of their hearty meat or fresh vegetarian pizzas, you’re taste

buds are sure to be tickled. But then again, their veal dishes are also a top seller at Positano’s, so maybe one of those would appease your appetite. Harry says the Piccata and Saltimbocca are customer favorites. On our last visit we tried the Veal Positano – veal sautéed and baked with fresh spinach, tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella in a white wine prosciutto sauce with an added touch of marinara. The flavors in this entrée were a divine combination. Positano’s features an extensive menu complete with plenty of seafood dishes to tempt you, such as the Shrimp

Sophia – jumbo shrimp sautéed in garlic and white wine with Kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh basil, and then topped with crumbled feta. All the flavors combined together perfectly, and while I didn’t think I’d be able to finish it, it was so yummy I couldn’t leave even one bite behind. Harry also says the pork chop with sausage stuffing and a sauce of garlic, mushrooms, and sherry is a big favorite among Positano’s regulars, as are the many traditional pasta dishes they serve, like Fettuccine Alfredo, Penne Alla Vodka, Gnocchi Bolognese and Eggplant Parmigiana.
