Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center Hosts 5K / 1 Mile Race to Benefit Education On November 2, 2013, Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center will be hosting a 5K / 1-mile race to benefit educational programs in the Pasco County area. More specifically, the race will benefit two programs – the Advanced Placement program and the Interact Club – that are close to the hearts of Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center owners Mike and Christine Gilmore because their daughter Courtney was a very involved high school student in those programs. Mike and Christine are asking the public to join in the race to help honor Courtney. “Our daughter, Courtney and her friend Kimberlee, were in both of these programs giving us insight into the drive and cost necessary to excel in academics. On July 2, 2013, both young ladies were taken from us in a tragic car accident. We would like to fulfill their ambition and determina-

tion by donating proceeds* of this race to the programs they were so passionately involved in. “Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States created by the College Board offering collegelevel curriculum and examinations to high school students. American colleges often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores above a certain number on the examinations. Unfortunately, a burden is placed upon so many bright students because much of the cost goes directly to the student for books and supplies. We want to take that burden from the student so that they can focus on their studies alone. “The Interact Club is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people of secondary school age that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and

promotes international understanding and peace.” Mike & Christine Gilmore’s business, Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center, will host the run and is seeking sponsorships. Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center is located at 10720 SR 54, Suite 105 in Trinity, FL 34655. Please call 727-807-3295 for more information about registering for the 5K / 1-mile race or for sponsorship information. There will be a sign-up party on September 14, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center. Sign up that day and get a free smoothie! *A ledger will be made available to all those requesting to show the use of proceeds.

Community News Briefs Medical Center of Trinity Announces Major Advancement in the Treatment of Lung Cancer Medical Center of Trinity announced a major addition to its cancer treatment arsenal. and is now utilizing Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB) ™ to access and biopsy lesions deep in the lung. The superDimension® i-Logic™ System is a minimally invasive option for patients who have been identified as having a small or hard-to-reach lesion on their lung that is inaccessible through traditional bronchoscope. The ENB procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that uses the patient’s natural airways to reach these particular masses. ENB is typically an outpatient procedure and minimizes the need for more invasive surgical procedures to assess lesions in the distant regions of the lung, where more than two-thirds of all cancers are found. This new procedure minimizes the need for more conventional assessments, such as thorascopic or percutaneous needle

biopsy, which may require an inpatient stay and can cause complications such as a collapsed lung. This procedure may be used when an abnormal finding in a distant part of the lung has been found on an x-ray, CT scan or PET-CT scan that may be caused by infection, inflammation or cancer. Small lesions in the outer area of the lung are difficult to reach for diagnosis and treatment. “Traditional bronchoscopy frequently fails to reach the outer areas of the lungs often leading to more invasive surgical options for diagnosis,” says Dr. Nagesh Salian, pulmonologist. The Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® will allow a physician to locate, test, diagnose, and potentially treat the one legion even in the outer areas of the lungs,” he added. How does it work? After a lesion has been detected through CT, the patient’s scan is loaded into planning software that creates a 3D roadmap of the lungs. A bronchoscope is placed through the patient’s mouth and into the airways of the lungs. The ENB’s catheters are next placed in the chan-

nel of the bronchoscope. The electromagnetic sensors in the catheters guide the physician to the targeted lesion. Once there, the guide catheter is removed and the extended working channel catheter remains. Biopsy tools are then placed through the working catheter to obtain tissue samples for testing and diagnosis. Upon completion of the procedure, the patient goes to recovery and, in the vast majority of cases, discharged home. “Bringing this technology to our community is a huge step forward,” said Lawrence Hochman, DO, FACRO (Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncologists), “This gives our patients access to diagnostic and treatment options on par with university centers. “We are proud to offer this technology to the community which further enhances our Accredited Cancer Program by the Commission on Cancer,” said Leigh Massengill, CEO of Medical Center of Trinity. “News that a spot (lesion), deep in your lung, has been found and a lung biopsy needs to be performed raises many concerns and emotions. It is important to know that you may have options close to home.”

Sertoma Speech & Hearing volunteers, led by Hearing Screen Coordinator Pat Manfredo, perform state education department mandated hearing screens for all Headstart, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first grade students, as well as, sixth grade students at the local middle schools. Kiefer’s was voted Best Jeweler in Pasco County for the last three years and was recently awarded the Chamber of Commerce Award for Small Business of the Year. As one of only three Official Rolex Jewelers in the Tampa Bay area, Kiefer’s offers highly attentive service that is simpatico with the elegance of all Rolex jewelers – courteous, loyal and high in standards. Located on State Road 54 in Lutz, Kiefer’s offers customers a chance to liberally try on exquisite jewelry in a fun, relaxed, no-pressure environment. Clients are treasured here, very much like each unique piece of beautiful jewelry within the store. In addition to the fabulous jewelry and bridal collections from top designers and the sophisticated selection of Rolex watches, Kiefer’s has popular selections from Pandora and the new trendy designs by Alex and Ani, made in the U.S. with all recyclable materials, as well as custom designs, expert watch and jewelry repair and restoration. Kiefer’s is family owned and operated, which allows for a more personal experience. In 1997, David and Wendy Hevia bought the Village Jewel, established in 1957 in down-

town Dade City, from the Kiefer family renaming it Kiefer Village Jewels. With the success of the Dade City store, the couple decided to expand, opening their 2nd location in a strip center in Lutz in 2002. The community immediately welcomed the new neighborhood jeweler to town so the Hevias started planning for a larger permanent location. David explains how they planned the new store’s home from the ground up, “Wendy and I would sit at our kitchen table and draw out what we wanted the store to represent. From the glass cases, elegant lighting, open area and personalized amenities, we custom designed the entire building. David and Wendy share natural affinity for fine jewelry and actually met while working at the prominent guild jewelry chain, Bailey, Banks and Biddle. Wendy grew up in her family’s jewelry store and David began selling jewelry while in college at USF. In addition, their store manager, Jeff Booth, formerly J.T. of Avant Gold Jewelers, brings his 25 years to the Kiefer team. Jeff’s well-defined work ethic has kept customers raving about his service and great attitude. Between Wendy, David, Jeff and the rest of the Kiefer Team, there is more than a century of combined experience. Their mission reads “Our mission is to serve our customers, our community, and our employees with the same passion we have for unique affordable fine jewelry by providing a

Rolex looks for long-term relationships, so they study every detail of the business model in their quest to find the perfect partner. Less than 2% of fine jewelers in the nation are invited into the Rolex family. Kiefer’s considers it an honor to carry this classic timepiece that stands the test of time in value, prestige, and elegance. David says, “We carry Rolex as our flagship line. When you are an Official Rolex Jeweler, you don’t need to carry a bunch of other lines trying to make an impression. Rolex is known as the King of watches!” Kiefer’s also is an official service provider offering advice and consultation for collectors and repairs. Kiefer’s receives the newest Rolex models regularly. Peaceful Endings for All Faiths Begin at Trinity Memorial Gardens By Julie Kanehl How would you like to be remembered? Let’s face it, it’s not the hottest topic to talk about over the dinner table, but it is an important one. Shouldn’t we at least have the conversation about how we’d like to be remembered when the time comes? Shouldn’t we have an opinion and make it known now, and choose the way we would want to be memorialized? Trinity Memorial Gardens, at 12609 Memorial Drive in Trinity, just off of S.R. 54, is fully prepared to help people of all faiths make these difficult decisions while honoring their beliefs and making the grieving process as easy as possible. Choosing your legacy is important, and while it may be a tough, often uncomfortable conversation to have, it’s one worth having. The greatest gift you can give to your fam-

ily after you pass is to have your wishes in writing, your plans in place, and better yet – your final goodbye completely arranged. In the midst of grief and loss, it’s an unimaginable task for a grieving family member to wonder, “What would they have wanted?” The professional staff at Trinity Memorial Gardens, which is locally and independently owned, is experienced at guiding individuals and families on how someone should be remembered. Whether working with individuals who want to have their plans in place way in advance, or working with mourning families who have recently lost a loved one, the kind, experienced staff members are helpful in navigating the many choices and options involved, so that your family can be comforted, and each person’s final wishes can be brought to fruition. says, “Our focus is educating the community about their options. There are endless options, and families don’t know that; they don’t know until it is time.” He explains, “It’s a ministry that we do in actually engaging in educating the community on death and dying.” Trinity Memorial Gardens is prepared to help families remember the individual who has passed by celebrating their lives and making their funeral as unique and personal as the individ-

ual, or the family, would like it to be. Catering to families of all faiths, they have a beautiful facility for funeral services, an expansive and beautifully manicured cemetery and offer crematory services as well. When someone passes, all of their needs can be cared for with dignity, at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Comfort Those You Love After You’ve Passed Prearranging a funeral is a great

way to comfort those you love after you have died, and prearranging is not as unusual as you might think. In fact, these days, people are taking an active role in their funeral plans, and they are designing a funeral for themselves with their families in mind. This takes the heavy burden off of children, loved ones, and siblings who may have to guess on important decisions such as burial versus cremation. In fact, many are designing funerals that focus less on their passing and more on the beautiful life and the relationships that made their lives so special. In order to do so, some difficult questions have to be asked. Here are a few of the tough questions. Do you

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

want to be buried? Would you like a fancy casket or a simple one? Would you prefer to be cremated? Would you want an urn? Would you prefer to be scattered? Would you like a headstone? Would you prefer to be buried with someone or by someone? Would you prefer to be placed in an aboveground mausoleum? These are just a few of the many questions that the employees of Trinity Memorial Gardens are prepared to help you decide. Whatever your personal wishes are, it’s important to share your wishes and make a plan. The questions are hard now; imagine how much harder they would be for your children or loved ones in the days following your passing. Prearranging your funeral takes the burden off of your family, and gives you peace of mind. Czech says, “Prearranging has so many benefits. It’s the greatest gift

you can ever leave your family. Another benefit is that when you prearrange, you lock in the price and can pay over a period of time for the funeral you desire.” If you haven’t thought about it, it’s time to start the dialogue with those around you, and you’ll be surprised by the answers, because they may not be the answers that you expected. Whatever your wishes, it’s as easy as sitting down with the professionals at Trinity Memorial Gardens and making a plan. Prearranged funerals are like giving a final gift to those who love and cherish you the most. Trinity Memorial Gardens Helps Families Grieve Many people believe that the funeral is for the person who has passed, but when you think about it, a funeral is really a time and a place for everyone who loved you to come together in unity and go through the many emotions that go with grieving. There are many stages to grief, and funerals, while sad, are helpful in the healing process for those who are mourning. The beautiful and recently renovated funeral home at Trinity Memorial Gardens can accommodate many different styles of funerals, from intimate family gatherings, to large wakes where hundreds of people may come to pay their respects. Equally, the vast 40-acre cemetery, which is only 40% developed at this time, is a serene place to say goodbye, and to come and visit with those who have passed. The beautiful cemetery at Trinity Memorial Gardens is reminiscent of a park, with beautiful landscaping, fountains and flowers. This tranquil landscape is divided into large sections that are designated by faith. In essence, there are many minicemeteries within the grounds that cater to different faiths, as well as lovely grounds dedicated to those who

prefer a non-denominational burial. Also on the grounds is an impressive mausoleum that offers indoor and outdoor burial options. The cathedrallike stained glass windows welcome visitors into a climate-controlled atmosphere where family members can sit comfortably, rain or shine, and honor those who have died. From plots for one, to private mini estates and family dedicated mausoleums, Trinity Memorial Gardens can help your loved one rest in peace, and give survivors a place to come and peacefully remember those who have gone ahead. If someone you love has passed away, think of Trinity Memorial Gardens, for they can help you and your family create a funeral arrangement for your loved one that will be heartfelt, personal and peaceful. Czech says, “We aim to be pillars of strength and certainty in our community.” If you are ready to make your wishes known, and in doing so, give a long-lasting gift to your loved ones by preparing arrangements now, please consider working with the experienced Trinity Memorial Gardens staff, who will make the process as easy and comfortable as possible. Their mission statement says it all: “We pledge to fulfill our trust and obligation to every Trinity Memorial Gardens family property owner and to all the communities we serve.” Trinity Memorial Gardens is located at 12609 Memorial Drive in Trinity. Land O' Lakes-Based Female Bariatric Surgeon’s Innovative Portion Control Product Aims To ‘Get On The Shelf’ in WalMart’s 2nd Annual Contest. Local inventors and co-owners of BariWare, LLC were thrilled to learn that their innovative portion control container, the BariBowl®, has advanced to the next round of WalMart’s “Get On The Shelf” contest. The BariBowl® was created by Florida’s first female bariatric surgeon, Dr. Tiffany Jessee and

Physician Assistant, Dezi Zevin, in an effort to help post-weight loss surgery patients manage their strict serving sizes at meal time. This brand new serving and measuring bowl, which is manufactured locally in Clearwater, now has a chance to be stocked on the coveted shelves of WalMart nationwide. “It was frustrating to watch our patients constantly struggle with their new diet guidelines, without any tools on the market to help them,” Dr. Jessee explains. “So we invented the BariBowl® based on our patients’ needs, and the results have been extremely positive. In fact, this product is being used not only by our bariatric patients, but by anyone who wants to eat healthier meals with easy portion control.” They quickly realized the potential to reach a broader market for their product as BariBowl® orders poured in from consumers across the United States. The BariBowl® appeals to those who are interested in managing their nutritional intake for a healthier life--diabetics, those battling obesity or childhood obesity, dieters and even body builders and athletes. Soon Bari-

Ware® was receiving numerous requests from multiple countries and promptly established a distributor for the Australian market, with similar plans being made for Canada and the U.K. BariWare is competing with other entrepreneurs and small businesses from around the country in the “Get On The Shelf” contest, where WalMart judges will evaluate which products garner the most public interest and online votes. Every Child Deserves a Voice Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech

By Dara Tucker Saturday, October 19, at the Carillon Parkway/Catalina Marketing Field the 4th annual Tampa Bay Walks for Talk to benefit children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech will be held. The event is a family-fun filled day including a walk, lunch, and games for kids. On-site registration and check-in begins at 10 a.m., and the walk begins promptly at 11:15 a.m. There is a family meet and greet after the walk at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CASANA’s (The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America) apraxia programs and research. CASANA is a source of in-

spiration and instrumental in helping many families and professionals gain the knowledge in apraxia needed to move children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) to develop meaningful speech. For many families it is the first place they look to for support after their child is diagnosed. According to CASANA Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor speech disorder that first becomes apparent as a young child is learning speech. For reasons not yet fully understood, children with apraxia of speech have great difficulty planning and producing the precise, highly refined and specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw and palate that are necessary for intelligible speech. Apraxia of speech is sometimes known as verbal apraxia, developmental apraxia of speech, or verbal dyspraxia. The most important concept is the root word “praxis.” Praxis means

28 For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124

planned movement. To some degree or another, a child with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech has difficulty programming and planning speech movements. Apraxia of speech is a specific speech disorder. This difficulty in planning speech movements is the missing key of childhood apraxia of speech. The challenge and difficulty that children with apraxia have in creating speech can be confusing to parents, especially when they observe the skill of learning to speak developing, seemingly without effort, in other children. Brenae Solis, the walk coordinator for Tampa Bay, turned to CASANA when her daughter Emily was diagnosed with apraxia at 22 months old. Brenae explains, “There was nowhere to go to in Florida for support at the time. CASANA is the national apraxia not-for-profit

Also be sure to register for the walk by Sunday, September 22 to receive an official Apraxia Walk t-shirt in your size. Jen Alfieri has a team walking for her son. Jen had never heard of apraxia before her third child, Caleb, was diagnosed at 33 months. Jen explains, “I knew something was wrong when he still wasn’t talking at two-and-a-half. I went to our pediatrician first, and then we went to Early Steps several times before we went to FDLRS (Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resource System). It was very frustrating because we were told so many different things before we got his diagnosis. He now receives support through the TALK Program in the school system and private therapy. He’s making great gains with the combination of

the two. The other day he strung three words together. Every child is different. For most children speech works itself out, but Caleb was one of 1,000 that it didn’t. I encourage moms to trust your instinct if you think something in wrong. Early intervention is critical.” Join a great cause, Saturday, October 19, and have a fun day at Carillon Parkway/Catalina Marketing Field, 120 Carillon Parkway, in St. Petersburg. Adult walkers are $20, and children under 18 are $10. For more information about the walk, or to donate to the walk, visit www.apraxia-kids.org.

In 2012, Nelson Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine became the first facility in the state of Florida and one of the first 20 in the country to receive program accreditation from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). “The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine congratulates Nelson Dentistry on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a dental sleep medicine facility,” says Dr. Gail Demko, AADSM president. “Nelson Dentistry is a significant resource to the local sleep medi-

cine community and will provide the highest quality care for patients with sleep-disordered breathing.” In order to receive accreditation, a dental sleep medicine facility must exceed all standards designated by the AADSM. Standards include: the continuing education of staff, a developed set of policies and procedures for accepting, treating and billing patients; as well as adherence to approved standards for safety and patient follow up. Dental sleep medicine is a growing section of dentistry with a focus on managing snoring and sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy (OAT). As an effective alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, OAT utilizes a “mouth guard-like” device worn during sleep in order for patients to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. OAT prevents the

airway from collapsing by either holding the tongue in the forward position or supporting the jaw. Dr. Nelson has the knowledge to help patients with your sleep problems in a way that doesn’t require a machine and can be more comfortable. His alternative to the CPAP is to custom-fit patients with an oral appliance, such as the SomnoMed, which is a small acrylic device that fits over the upper and lower teeth; realigning your jaw in order to open your airway and allow more air to flow into the lungs as you sleep. The SomnoMed device is much like a retainer or mouth guard – providing patients with an excellent success rate for sleep apnea and snoring prevention. Dr. Nelson and his staff at Nelson Dentistry are very excited about the future of dental sleep medicine and look forward to being a part of the innovative treatment options that they can now offer to their patients. Dr. Nelson was recently voted to

be included in the topDentists™ database provided by www.usatopdentists.com. The database is based upon peer reviews in which dentists and specialists throughout Florida have a chance to cast votes based on the abilities of other dentists. Dr. Nelson’s dedication to professionalism and innovative techniques in the dental industry makes him a wonderful candidate for topDentists™. fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity recently said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kind-hearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Karla uses specially designed massage table pillows that create a comfortable position just for her during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, which is why Barkdoll

Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple recently wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!” If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them! My Massage with Karla I am a huge fan of massages. I go

every chance I get, but to be honest, that isn’t very often. When I’m not busy with my family or writing for the Neighborhood News, I’m like most moms and am usually concerned with everyone else’s comfort over my own. That’s why I was so excited to be given the chance to experience one of Karla’s massages by the staff at Neighborhood News. (Thanks Jim!) Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! On the evening of my massage appointment, I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla arrived right on time and brought everything she needed with her. A true professional, Karla even wears a clinical massage uniform. Within just a few minutes Karla had set up the massage table and was set up and ready to go. I was really impressed with how quickly the room I

had picked had been transformed. Before we started she spoke to me about what kind of massage treatment I wanted, and she asked if I had any injuries that she needed to be aware of. We decided on a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage. She also offered me many different aromatherapy options from rose oil to eucalyptus. I felt totally at ease, and while she stepped out of the room, I comfortably got onto the massage table and got settled. When Karla came back in a moment later, she put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! This was an incredibly cool experience that made me feel more centered, and really changed my outlook. I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a dif-

ference it made for me both physically and emotionally. I can see that a massage with Karla would be a great gift, which is why I’m so happy that she offers gift certificates, but one of the best parts about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is. I might not have to wait for a special occasion because her pricing is competitive and affordable enough to fit into anyone’s budget on a regular basis. From now on, I’m going to take better care of myself, and that includes having massage treatments from Barkdoll Massage Therapy on a regular basis. See
