CARROLLWOOD BARBER SHOP Offers History and Experience in Every Visit

Carrollwood Barber Shop owners Ray and Brenda Murray

The window to the right of the entry door reads “BARBER SHOP” while the window to the left reads “TONSORIAL PARLOR”. Both aptly describe the business inside. The 1000 square foot shop transports its customers back in time. Looking over his Turn-of-the-20th Century style barbershop which boasts 9 antique porcelain barber chairs, complete with razor strops; several wall-mounted and free-standing vintage barber poles; and numerous other

memorabilia of the tonsorial artists (tonsura - shearing of hair); Ray Murray explains how his shop has evolved to become an icon of the community. Carrollwood Barber Shop initially opened in 1962 when the Carrollwood Shopping Center was built. Ray Murray purchased the shop in 1980 as a business investment. Although not a barber at that time, he enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and jovial interaction with staff and customers so much that he decided in 1985 to try his

hand at it. Graduating from Roffler Barber College, Ray changed his career and started barbering the following year. At that time, the shop had only three barber chairs and was located next door to its current location. Shortly after marrying in 2000, Ray and Brenda Murray decided to invest in their future by expanding the shop. They increased the number of barber chairs and created a larger, See “Barber Shop” on page 16.

A Grateful American: How Passion and Professionalism Inspired Gifts of Gratitude Some of Deb Benson’s most cherished childhood memories are from visits to her grandfather’s farm in Temple Terrace, where she would fish in his lake. Since then, the landscape has changed dramatically, but Benson still visits that farm — almost every weekday. As a manager in the Florida sales operations department at Verizon Wireless, Benson’s office building stands where that farm once was, and she can see the old fishing lake from her desk. Benson has led and inspired many people in her 26year career with Verizon Wireless, working within nearly every department, including customer service, marketing, operations and sales. But, it was only eight years ago that Benson assumed a personal leadership role that would touch tens of thousands of lives outside her company. Around the Fourth of July holiday in 2007, Benson was searching for an engaging way to teach her

8

SEPTEMBER 2015

sons about the expression of gratitude. As she researched ways to show appreciation for the selfless men and women who defend our country, she had an idea to have special coins made that they could present to soldiers and thank them for their service. Benson found that unique military coins are often collected by service members, or even earned through achievements or to enhance morale. So Benson and her family designed a coin of their own. As Benson set out to place a small order for a few of their new coins, she discovered that to qualify for a price break, she would need to purchase 2,000. Inspired by a legacy of family patriotism and her professional passion to connect with others, Benson decided to expand the idea rather than scrap it, and that was the beginning of the Grateful American Coin program. Focused on providing a tangible

way to display gratitude to those who serve our country, the Grateful American Coin program quickly went through those first 2,000 coins. By selling the coins to others who wanted to say “thank you” to our military, the Grateful American Coin program was able to donate proceeds from each sale to organizations that provide support services to the severely injured men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. Today, the Grateful American Coin has recognized over 51,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and veterans. Additionally, it has donated more than $113,000 to partner organizations, including The Special Ops Warrior Foundation and Paws for Patriots. Even more powerful than the numbers are the personal stories behind each of the 51,000 coins. While waiting to board a recent flight, Benson “coined” an Army helicopter

pilot to thank him for his service. After receiving the coin, he went to the Grateful American Coin website, where he realized he had received his coin from the organization’s founder. When the plane landed, Benson was walking out when she heard someone say, “it’s you, it’s you!” She turned around to find the Army pilot waiting on the jetway for her to express his heartfelt appreciation.

“It’s inspiring to show sincere gratitude to the people fighting for our freedom every day,” said Benson. “Their personal stories are the most beautiful gift, which I never expected.” Grateful American Coins have been framed by recipients, laid at an unmarked grave in Normandy and buried in the caskets of servicemen, but one of the most impactful moments for Benson was learning about a 13-year-old who received a specially designed coin for the families of the fallen after his father passed away. Dealing with the death of a parent can be very hard, and this young man was no exception. It was difficult for him to talk about it, so he used the coin to drive the conversation. When

he went to bed at night, he would leave his coin out on the nightstand as a signal to his mom that he wanted to talk about his loss. This is just one of many encouraging and emotional stories shared on Grateful American Coin’s website and Facebook page. The coin was thought up as a way for Benson to show her sons whom the true heroes are in today’s world. And if they’ve ever stopped to think about the 51,000 experiences those coins have generated, they’ve probably realized that their mom is one, too. If you’d like to donate, purchase coins, or read the stories of those who have given or received coins, please visit www.GratefulAmericanCoin.org.

Tampa Rejuvenation - “Your Health Our Passion” By Matthew Selby Let’s face it, getting older has this awful little side effect of aging your body. As hormones deplete, our skin begins to sag and wrinkle, our sex drive declines, we gain unexplained weight, we have sleep issues, and our drive for life lessens. We cannot control time as it passes each day, but with advancements in technology and medical research, we now can slow down the negative effects of the aging process in a safe and very effective way. Tampa Rejuvenation, with its closest of 4 clinics located at 14448 Bruce B Downs Blvd. in Tampa, separates themselves with their integrative approach to medicine. The physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation let their work and happy customer testimonials speak for themselves. Patient Nancy H. writes, “Tampa Rejuvenation helped me lose a very needed 30 pounds! My primary doctor was very impressed that I am now much healthier and no longer a diabetic risk. The HCG diet is healthy, safe and fast. The staff is great! They are all knowledgeable, courteous and helpful (the Doctor, the Nutritionist,

medical assistants, counselors, office administrators). They monitor everything from beginning to end and will help at any time. I have also now learned how to eat healthier. Between this and the diet, I will be keeping the weight off. I feel so much better, healthier and confident. It was one of the best things I've done!” The staff at Tampa Rejuvenation is detail-oriented and patient-specific in their treatment – it’s not cookie cutter medicine. The science is out there; the treatment is available; but finding the right physicians for you can make all the difference in the world. The physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation are unique – they left the modern tunnel-vision style of medicine behind. They understand that many times conventional medicine is designed by “BIG-PHARMA“ to relieve symptoms and sometimes only masks those symptoms to make them bearable. I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to settle for just bearable symptoms of anything. At Tampa Rejuvenation the physicians honed in their skills with only one goal in mind – to fix the problem, not hide it. While interview-

ing the founder of Tampa Rejuvenation, Brett Markowitz, the simple premise of going to sleep each night and feeling good about what his team was doing is clearly at the forefront of his business goals and morals. He and his staff are passionate about their patients and seeing improvements in their health. It’s clearly something they refuse to waiver from. Since each patient is different, with their expertise in this field of integrative medicine of anti-aging, the physicians not only focus on the lab

work, but they listen to symptoms and focus on their goals when designing a customized treatment plan using bio identical hormones and treating weight issues. The physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation focus more on quality than quantity; they want a patient committed to their health; not a patient that is just interested in taking a magic pill and has unrealistic expectations – that’s a fantasy. The reality is it has to be a complete change in lifestyle. That’s why the physicians at Tampa Rejuvena-

“Barber Shop” Continued from page 1 more comfortable waiting room for their customers. Ray and Brenda spent much of their free time shopping for the various antiques that now adorn the shop. People may assume that barber shops are exclusively for men, but Ray says that is simply not the case in his shop. The shop welcomes men, women and children. Carrollwood Barber Shop even provides “Baby’s First Cut” services wherein the customer receives a “First Cut Certificate” and lock of hair as a keepsake. Parents can also take a photo of their baby in an antique Koken Children’s Barber Chair. A returning customer for three years, Dana Barnett brought her son, Logan 5, and daughter, Ella 7, because her brother and nephew have been coming here for 16 years. “At other places, people come and go,” said Dana. “Here - it’s always the same people; they are friendly and good with kids. Back to School Health Tips From Centra Care Back to School can be filled with emotion, but for many it’s nothing but a big headache -- literally. Centra Care locations usually notice more patients complaining of an aching head this time of year. Centra Care medical director, Timothy Hendrix MD, says that the increase in headaches cannot be attributed to one main cause. In many cases, the headaches are triggered by nothing more than summertime fun. Here are just some of the reasons your head may be aching: Hot Dog Headache – nitrates found in foods like, hot dogs, sausage and processed meat are known triggers for migraines. Outdoor Activities – the outdoor summer fun can be a real headache for those who suffer from allergies and sinus trouble. Alcohol (especially red wine) - it doesn’t take a lot to set off a headache for those who are migraine-prone. Many chemicals in alcohol including

sulfites, tyramine and more can quickly cause you pain. Alcohol can also cause dehydration, which can also lead to a headache.

vard University researchers found that for every 9°F increase in the temperature outdoors, the risk of severe headache jumped by 7.5 percent.

Sleep – changes in sleep patterns, which happen a lot this time of year, are known to cause migraines for some. It’s important to remain on a set sleep schedule.

Sun/Heat – a sunburn and heat exhaustion can both be causes for headaches. Be sure to limit sun exposure and stay hydrated. These are just some of the causes that can bring on end of summer headaches. Avoiding the trigger can be a huge help. You may also find relief with over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, as well as lifestyle changes including relaxation and exercise. For

Stress – School supply lists, new teachers, new schedules, whatever your stressor may be, it can quickly bring on a tension headache. Increased temperatures – Har-

migraine sufferers, prescription medicine may be prescribed. It’s important to determine that your headache is not caused by an underlying medical disorder. Seek medical care for severe pain, vomiting, neck pain, fever or headache accompanied by any numbness, weakness, vision changes or problems speaking. “Bleakley Bavol” Continued from page 1 firm employs 13 attorneys with further growth still planned. In 2008 the firm re-located from downtown to its current location near the corner of Florida and Bearss Avenue.

Strategic Growth Robert is accompanied by his partner Chuck Bavol, who joined the firm in March 2011, transitioning the name from The Bleakley Law Firm to The Bleakley Bavol Law Firm. “When Chuck joined in 2011 he brought in sophistication, experience and excellent trial strategies and technological tools that really advanced our practice and allowed us to provide even better services to our clients, particularly in the area of litigation,” says Robert. Chuck is nationally recognized as an outstanding litigator who has served as national trial counsel for Dow Corning and regularly handles high exposure product liability, medical device, medical malpractice, and construction cases. In 2012 Robert’s long-time friend and fellow Avila neighbor, Rob Grace, joined the firm. Bleakley describes Grace as a “throw-back”. He says, “Rob has over 24 years of experience practicing law and is one of the states’ most respected workers compensation litigators. He is a ‘lawyers lawyer’ – professional, ethical, and one of the hardest working attorneys I know.” Grace leads a team of experienced workers compensation defense attorneys that include partners Dave Lamont and Crystal Corry. In 2015 the firm added north Tampa resident Kristen Allman, who spent the majority of her 28 year legal career as a board certified employment law specialist. Robert noted the firm has represented large companies and smaller businesses in employment disputes for years and adding an attorney

with true specialization in the employment law area was something he had desired for many years. In addition, Robert noted the long time contributions of partners R.G. “Mack” McCormick, who has been with the firm since 2001 and who, along with Robert, represents national floor cleaning companies and large malls in premises liability claims and been to trial many times with Robert. “We have fought many battles together and there is no one else I would rather go to trial with than Mack. In a very similar way, our partner Melissa Krepps has been through numerous trials with Chuck Bavol. She is the guru of federal court procedure and has successfully argued at the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.” Robert says, “not all of your readers are a general counsel or risk manager of a large company seeking representation in commercial or tort cases. But everyone in your audience will probably need a lawyer at some point in their lives.” In 2006 Bleakley added Christina Hebert as a partner in order to provide legal services to local businesses and individuals in areas other than just litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Christina gained experience working in a small Tampa firm where she was a partner and handled corporate work and business transactions, guardianship and probate matters as well as drafted wills and formulated estate plans. Christina, who has 20 years of experience as a lawyer, prides herself on being able to provide face to face representation with clients. In that regard, the location of The Bleakley Bavol Law Firm’s offices to surrounding neighborhoods in Carrollwood, North Tampa, and southern Pasco County has been a bonus. This allows many clients convenient access for face to face consultation with their lawyer, a lost art among too many in the legal profession. At Bleakley Bavol, Christina has continued to focus her

practice primarily in the areas of estate planning, probate, wills and trusts, as well as corporate law, business formation and transactions. In addition, Robert noted Christina is an added bonus to the complex commercial litigation team at Bleakley Bavol. “Ronald Denman joined our firm in 2014 and, like Chuck, brought something new to our firm. Our firm had always had a commercial litigation presence but Ron really brings our commercial practice to entirely new level, expanding it to include complex probate and guardianship litigation. Ron is a former prosecutor and general counsel of a large corporation. He cut his teeth trying commercial cases down in Miami and throughout the south Florida area. Fortunately, when he arrived, we had Christina’s commercially oriented brain to lend to Ron’s team and it has worked out very well.”

Estate Planning, Wills And Trusts Whether you want to do a simple will or trust to provide for the disposition of your personal belongings and other assets and property or are looking for business succession planning, Christina will offer well thought out advice and will assist you with your estate planning needs.. “At some point in their life, each and every person is going to need a will and I am here to help with that,” says Christina. “I will take the time to explain your options based upon your needs and goals and help to plan out all the details.” If you have assets, and have yet to set up a will or trust, I think it’s time you come and talk to Christina. No matter what your situation may be, Christina may be able to help! “Having a will is so important,” says Christina. “You want to make sure your assets go to the people and in the manner which you want them to go. If you die without a will or a trust,

your assets will pass according to the intestacy laws, which may not be consistent with your wishes.” Having a will is especially important if you have children who are minors. Something people don’t often consider is the mechanism in which their children will inherit their property. “When minor children are involved, it is usually a good idea to have trust provisions to provide for the distribution of the money to children over time and in installments; otherwise the children could have complete control of the money when they turn 18. The use of trust provisions allows you to decide at what age the child will receive money and the amount they will receive. Trust provisions are particularly important when your children are young because you do not yet know what their maturity level with be and whether they will be able to handle a significant amount of wealth at the time of your death.” From small family run businesses to large corporations, Christina has a lot of familiarity with estate planning from a corporate perspective as well, and has helped many business owners plan for the succession of their business. Christina says, “I enjoy meeting with clients and getting to know them and finding out what it is they want to achieve. Building a strong relationship is really important to me. They need to be able to trust you and have confidence in the legal services you are providing them.” Maybe you already have a will in place, but your situation has changed, such as you have recently gotten a divorce. Did you remember to change your beneficiary designation? This is a common mistake that many people forget to do. Your will does not determine where all of your assets will go, the beneficiary designation controls that. So if you forget to change that your assets can end up going to somebody that you didn’t want it to go to – such as your ex spouse.

family and we grow it that way. We are very particular about the people we bring in because that is a representation of who we are. We are different – our employees often comment that the environment here is completely different than any other law firm where they previously worked. We intentionally run it that way. We are different with a purpose.” At Bleakley Bavol you get the best of both worlds, the experience, professionalism, and even an elegant legal environment, without having to drive downtown to get it. Christina Hebert added, “you can expect per-

sonalized attention from lawyers who truly care about you and your well being”. As their slogan proudly reads, “Large enough to handle complex cases, small enough to provide personalized service!” The Bleakley Bavol Law Firm is located at 15170 North Florida Ave. in Tampa. The firm is open 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Mon. – Fri., with appointment times available outside normal office hours. For more information or to schedule a consultation please call (813) 2213759 or visit www.BleakleyBavol.com.

At Bleakley Bavol Law Firm you can always expect to receive personalized attention from lawyers who truly care about you and your well being. There are so many things to take into account when estate planning, so why not talk to the professionals at Bleakley Bavol so you know it will get taken care of properly!

Trust Is The Key To Success Bleakley credits the firm’s focus on building trust with its clients as the reason it has been successful. “Trust is so important; the client has to know that their lawyer is looking out for them,” says Robert. “Most people start with a preconceived notion that lawyers are only looking out for their own best interests, but we go above and beyond to prove that we put our clients’ needs first and will always do what is in their best interests. We preach to our new lawyers at every monthly meeting that we must take every opportunity to build trust with our client. In the end, if we can build that bond of trust with our client, where they know, because we have already proven it, that we are looking out for the client, we will be successful.”

With an experienced roster of attorneys, The Bleakley Bavol Law Firm draws on its vast experience to advise its clients of the significant costs and risks of litigation. But with each legal matter, there is also a possible solution. Robert says, “What I like best about practicing law is finding the solution. Sometimes there is no good solution, so sometimes my job is to find the least bad solution – a way out. All of our attorneys are really good at understanding the problem, finding the best solution for the client and developing a plan to get them there.” Firm Administrator Jayme Bluffstone has been with the firm since 2004. She adds a different perspective on the growth and success of the firm. “We have great attorneys and an incredible staff supporting them. There is a lot of longevity in not only our attorneys but also our staff; our original legal secretary has been here with us for 15 years – since Robert opened the firm. I think that says a lot about the environment that Robert and Chuck foster here. This firm is

Trinity Family Physicians Announces the First Recipient of the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Dr. Amir Shirmohammad and Dr. Stephanie Eldridge appreciate the great response to the inaugural Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Trinity Family Physicians announced the Award in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles publications in July and now the physicians are excited to announce the first recipient of the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Dr. Shirmo (as his patients affectionately call him) presented Jim Carow with a beautiful gift basket donated from partnering sponsor Grille 54 that was filled with wine, cheese, crackers and of course, a gift certificate to enjoy a delicious dinner at Grille 54. Nominated for his volunteer work with the IWork program at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Jim Carow makes a difference in the lives of others here in Tampa Bay! Dr. Shirmo met with Jim Carow and his wife Mary to learn more about the volunteer work they do and he shared the reason that he and Dr. Eldridge created the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. “My wife and I wanted to start a program where we could give back for a worthwhile cause,” said Dr. Shirmo. “Dr. Eldridge said right away, ‘Why don’t we give out an award to people in our community who are making a difference in the daily lives of others?’ We both loved the idea!” Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo grew up in Tampa Bay, fell in love in Tampa Bay, went away to earn medical degrees together and then came back to the area to open a family medical practice and raise their own family. They look for ways to promote good in the community they love and though it has been a busy time for the husband-and-wife team – Dr. Eldridge

much heart into the IWork program that it has morphed into much more than a workshop. It is fellowship and caring. “When we had our first meeting, we thought it would be about strategy, networking, Linked In…and we do all that, but it is so much more. The methods we teach work at all levels. We have all kinds of people from physicians to 19-year-olds wanting to find summer jobs. We just give people hope.” He recalls the early planning of IWork with a laugh, “When they said we have to feed people, I said, ‘Do we really have to? Does every Baptist function have to include feeding people? Can’t we just teach them?’ But they were right. I realized early on that for some, this was their only meal of the day. We’ve got stories that will melt your heart and we’ve got stories that will send you to the moon.” The IWork program has built in a couple of traditions. Every year they

have an “Office Party” Christmas Party and put Publix gift cards under the tree. Jim recalls one young woman who had lost her car and was losing her house; she was depressed and almost didn’t come to IWork’s office party when she got the voicemail but decided to ride her bike. Jim recalled, “She burst into tears upon opening her card and finding that she had $25 for food. She said, ‘This will last me a week!’ And then a man walked over to her and handed her his Publix gift card.” Remarkable! Another tradition happened purely by accident. Sharon had been looking for a job for two years when she decided to go to IWork on Monday nights. After a couple of meetings, she got a job and to celebrate, bought a cake with her first paycheck and brought it in to share with the group. Someone brand new to the group that night got a job the same week and thought it was what everyone did so

he showed up with a cake the next week. A tradition of celebration was born, and hope carries on at IWork. Dr. Shirmo asked Jim Carow if there was anything he’d like to see happen from the exposure of winning the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. His answer was much the same as Pastor Hanes – that other churches and organizations will offer the same types of support for those sincerely seeking gainful employment. Jim pointed out that there are other churches in the area that have similar programs. Log on to Idlewild.org for more information about the IWork program at Idlewild Baptist Church.
