Come Check Out Tampa Bay’s Very Own Dancing With Our Stars Event So, chances are, you have seen, or at least heard of, the show Dancing With Our Stars; and, whether you are a huge fan or not, I think we can all appreciate the hard work and dedication put into the routines and performances each week. And, although you might not ever have the chance to watch their performances live, there is a great alternative I’d like to tell you about. What if I told you, Tampa Bay has their very own Dancing With The Stars event, or as they call it Dancing With Our Stars – our being the key word, as the local “celebrities” are in fact business owners and individuals in our very own community. In fact, this is the 3rd year that Tampa Bay will be home to this wonderful event, and after last years performances I can only

image how great it will be this year! Proudly hosting the event, The Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce their 3rd annual Dancing With Our Stars, which will be held at The Center for the Arts in Wesley Chapel, located at 30651 Wells Road in Wesley Chapel, on October 18 at 6 p.m. Doors open early, so make sure to get there ahead of time to secure a good spot – if last year’s event is any indication of how it will go this year, the center will be packed! An Evening of fun and entertainment, Dancing With Our Stars gives guests the opportunity to witness firsthand unique, one-of-a-kind performances like never seen before. And, unlike on the hit series – the dancers use plenty of props and can even wear costumes to make their dance truly unforgettable. Last year’s event showcased costumes such as the Hulk– which was definitely entertaining; there were even a few pirates and a mad scientist! To help raise proceeds, the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce, with the help of star volunteers, are also auctioning off a number of fun and unique items to bid on to raise money for their organization. A percentage of proceeds will also benefit the local dance community, which

partnered with the star volunteers to choreograph and train for the event. The 3rd Annual Dancing With Our Stars will be held on October 18 at 6 p.m. at The Center for the Arts in Wesley Chapel, located at 30651 Wells Road in Wesley Chapel. Re-Tech SmartPhone Center Is the One-Stop for All Things SmartPhone By Deborah Bostock-Kelley It has happened to every one of us. At one time or another, we’ve stood up from the restaurant table, an important business meeting, a romantic date, or stepped out of the car and our lifeline to the world, our alphabetized numeric collection of friends and family, our history of photos and Instagram, our holder of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media connections has tumbled to the ground. We hold our breath as we flip over the escaped Smartphone, lying face down at our feet. This takes precedence over everything. The question we fear is answered. Is it broken? Now, thanks to Re-Tech SmartPhone Center, it doesn’t matter if it is, because they can fix it! Located in the heart of Carrollwood at 14444 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Re-Tech SmartPhone Center can fix

the cracked screen of your damaged cell phone as well as the inside interconnecting mechanisms, and do their best to figure out why when you speak the receiver on the other end of the phone call hears static and can’t hear you. Opened since May 2014, with a grand opening on August 1 celebrated with the public and members of the local business networking group, Car-

rollwood Area Business Association and North Tampa Chamber of Commerce, Re-Tech SmartPhone Center promises an evaluation to discover whether the cell phone’s issue comes without a charge to the consumer. “You don’t have to spend any money to find out what’s wrong with your phone,” says Dylan Farone, ReTech store manager. “You can bring it in and we’ll give you an estimate.”

Re-Tech Buys, Sells, and Trades Phones. “At Re-Tech, we try to be the smartphone center,” says Dylan. “We offer full repair for smartphones and tablets and we keep tons of parts on hand so we can get your repairs done quickly. Even some more obscure phones and older phones, we are going to have parts readily available to fix your device. That huge inventory of parts certainly helps get the turn-

around time much quicker.” Dylan gave an example of an iPhone 5 screen taking approximately 20 minutes to repair and replace and an iPad just a few hours of wait time for repair. Repair service is first come, first serve and repair work is done by technicians in-house and not sent out to a third-party. For those who have fallen victim to a phone caught in the rain, dropped in a puddle or even a toilet, Re-Tech also offers a water-damage repair program.

“It’s full disassembly of the device, cleaning all the components, getting it back up and running, testing everything we can test, and seeing if any components need to be replaced,” says Dylan. “The nice thing about that service is that we do all that for $50; if it is not successful, we take the plunge with you. If it’s not successful, you don’t pay that. If we don’t think it can be fixed, we’ll tell you. We’re putting our money where our mouth is where that’s concerned.” Replacement of components and new parts come at an additional cost.

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Re-Tech repairs charger ports, power buttons, micro-soldering work, toggle switches, capacitive keys, among others. Once Re-Tech makes the necessary repair service, their warranty is greater than most. “Our warranty is one year on our screen repairs. Our competitors don’t typically offer that,” says Dylan. “We also offer a 90 day warranty on parts and workmanship.” In addition to repair services, Re-Tech can unlock or jailbreak your cell phone. And they also offer prepaid services. Dylan says, “We have a lot of phones for sale that are all offcontract phones, so you have another alternative. We can help you get the data transferred and all the necessary steps involved with a phone sale. Our prepaid services help you get away from the larger carriers and on to an easier plan.” Lining the walls and shelves of Re-Tech are hundreds of cases and not just cases for the newer phones; ReTech prides itself on having products for older cell phone models, as well. “That’s a unique draw for us,” says Dylan. “You go to the carrier stores and they are going to have the latest and greatest phone cases, but most people don’t upgrade their phone every time a new phone comes out and they find it hard to find a place to get those cases.” Dylan says that Re-Tech possibly offers the largest selection of new and older model cases in Florida. “You can come, try them on your phone, see how they look – that firsthand experience,” he says.

Experiences sales people will help you choose the right product for your phone. “We are a good mix of retail and technology,” says Dylan. “We look for candidates that have experience in IT or a background or schooling involving technology. We also look for good retail folks. If you’ve got the smarts, we can definitely teach you a lot here. A lot of the training is hands-on.” Re-Tech is a member of both CABA and the North Tampa Chamber of Commerce and is active in the community. “We had a lot of CABA and NTCC members come out to our grand opening,” says Dylan. “That was cool. We certainly appreciated the show of support.” Through early November, in collaboration with the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Re-Tech is sponsoring a series of fundraisers and awareness campaigns to benefit the organization and its programs. Re-Tech has pledged to donate a minimum of $5,000 over the course of the partnership. When Re-Tech reaches 1,000 likes on its Facebook page, it will donate $1,000 to the Crisis Center. Dylan says, “That’s always been part of Re-Tech – branching out into the community and seeing where we can fit in to help.” Re-Tech is located in the heart of Carrollwood at 14444 N Dale Mabry Hwy, across from Lee Roy Selmon’s. For more information please call (813) 518-8858 or visit www.Re-Tech.com.

The Road to a Healthier Life Starts with Westchase Colonics By Alexis Selby In your lifetime you will meet thousands upon thousands of different people; a handful of which will leave a lasting impression that will forever change your perspective on life. For me, one of those people has been Missy Belmonte from Westchase Colonics. Missy is such an amazingly beautiful person, on both the inside and the out, and really has made a significant impact on my life, in more ways than one. And, it’s not just me; I’m sure if you go through the multitude of her clients, both past and present, they will all say the same thing! First and foremost I would consider Missy an educator and a friend, offering guidance, knowledge and the take-charge action necessary for you to reach a healthier state of being complete with transformative and lifechanging health benefits. I first came to Missy for a multitude of different reasons, and through her approach I learned so much more than I ever

thought possible and after a few weeks of treatments I felt refreshed and renewed – cleansed of all the harmful toxins that had polluted my body for so long. As a licensed colon therapist (CT), Missy has a passion for helping people along their journey in reaching a healthier, more natural state of health through a system that rids the colon of toxic buildup. Her devotion for leading a healthy lifestyle and her full belief in the benefits from cleansing through colon hydrotherapy, stems from her own personal life experiences. When Missy was in her midtwenties she began feeling tired, achy, worn-down and foggy. After missing out on work from debilitating symptoms, Missy pursued a mission to find the reason behind her illness. She found that she had developed Systemic Yeast Overgrowth called Candida, due to excess amounts of sugar and yeast and/or overuse of antibiotics, and according to www.candidaclinic.org, “Systemic Candida

overgrowth has become a virtual epidemic, affecting millions of people.” Once Missy realized that she needed to take charge of her body, she did just that; a change from her normal diet to a Westchase Colonics has a bright, cheery office, allowing healthier, more whole- patients to relax in a comfortable stress-free setting. some regimen reduced Missy’s Systemic Canrole model, Brenda Watson, the prodida symptoms by 80% within 8 prietor of cleansing products called weeks. Westchase Colonics is professional and serene drotherapist to further detox my body.” Missy says that after only six colonic treatments she was shocked at how amazing she felt. “I knew then that I wanted to pursue becoming a colon hydrotherapist to help people feel better in the same way I did,” shares Missy. “The truth is our bodies are not designed to endure the daily intrusion of chemicals ingested, from our food to the water we drink and bathe in…colonic therapy helps rid the body of those excess chemicals and toxins.” For some, doing a colon cleanse might seem like a very uncomfortable situation, but stepping inside the spa-like atmosphere at Westchase Colonics, is enough instantly relax you; coupled with Missy’s gracious welcome and expansive knowledge, you will immediately feel any apprehensions you may have about your visit slowly slip away. After your first cleanse you will instantly feel at ease and once you realize that it’s really not something to be nervous about, you should have no uneasiness in scheduling your next appointment to come back. If you are looking to improve your overall wellbeing, health and en-

ergy, you will be greatly satisfied with the upscale purifying program at Westchase Colonics. Janet from the Westchase area says, “I was nervous at the thought of having a colonic but Missy was so helpful and reassuring. I’m so thankful I can go to a place where I really feel right at home.” Missy says, “We all need to cleanse and be aware of importance of elimination. Here at Westchase Colonics it feels like coming to an Internal Body Cleansing Spa versus a clinic. I want my guests to feel great when they leave here…refreshed, energetic, yet relaxed and definitely lighter!” The colon hydrotherapy session lasts about 45 minutes and the final 10 to 15 minutes is spent in the bathroom to eliminate any excess water as you replenish your system with a delicious dairy-free, electrolyte and probiotic infused beverage. Upon your arrival, Missy will have you fill out a patient intake form, which will help her understand your medical and health history, as well as your current lifestyle in order to help you receive full benefits from your colonic cleanse. When you are finished with your form, Missy will guide you into her office to have a one-on-one

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

session that will break down the steps to your treatment, answer any questions you may have and discuss the importance of what she does. The purpose of getting a colon cleanse is to rid the body of toxins, wastes and other harmful build-up, but the fact is, if you don’t somehow change your lifestyle, these harmful wastes will once again accumulate – leading you to the same problems which brought you in in the first place. Taking a more assertive approach, Missy not only helps cleanse your body, but also educates you on proper nutrition, and food choices, so you are more aware of what you are putting into your body in the first place. Missy’s dedication to helping people take charge of their health is inspirational. She holds seminars at her office consistently in order to teach people how to better their lives through natural digestive health and detox, and she lectures throughout the Tampa Bay Area from health stores to chiropractic offices to networking events. Clients are constantly learning while visiting Westchase Colonics through literature and discussion, which offers unbeatable prices for the treatment and learning experience you receive. The professionalism,

the beautiful Far Infrared Cedar Full Body Sauna treatment and colonic therapy will have you feeling youthful, clean, light on your feet and holistically happy. Since becoming a licensed colon therapist Missy has helped hundreds, if not thousands, of other people the way she has me. So, if you are ready to rid your body of all the harmful toxins and chemical build-up that has been slowly deteriorating your health, I suggest you give Missy a call to set up a one-on-one consultation. What do you have to lose? Because maybe, she can help you too! “Seeing someone transform from feeling ill, lethargic and depressed to complete vigor, lightness and vitality is very rewarding,” says Missy. “I understand what it feels like before and after a healthy detox – helping people reach this healthier, lighter feeling is the reason I love, love, love what I do!” Westchase Colonics is located at 12513 Bassbrook Ln in Tampa. Please call (813) 749-0858 to speak with Missy and visit www.westchasecolonics.com for more information on services and a list of FAQ. Missy Belmonte is a Florida licensed Colon Therapist (MA53002).

Wow! Carrollwood’s Painting with a Twist Knows How to Throw a Party! By Julie Kanehl Carrollwood’s Painting with a Twist knows how to party, and they proved it at their Grand Opening event on August 14th, where franchise owners Michelle Beres and Sharon Reis celebrated the launch of their second Painting with a Twist location with live entertainment, amazing food and vendors, wine and champagne, and of course a painting class! Painting with a Twist is located in the Carrollwood Village Shoppes at 12926 N. Dale Mabry Highway, making it a convenient spot to come any night of the week. Painting with a Twist offers BYO-(beer, wine, cake, pizza!) painting parties, and is one of the most popular franchises in the entire country. Owners Michelle Beres and Sharon Reis, who also own the Trinity, FL location, are some of the coolest women you’ll ever meet, and it translates into their studios. Painting with a Twist offers guests an amazing experi-

ence that is affordable, incredibly fun and stress-free, and at the end of the day (or night), they send you home with a painting that is possibly made of more memories than paint!

The Grand Opening Soiree On Thursday, August 14th, guests had the opportunity to tour Painting with a Twist’s hot new studio, which is part urban chic, part vineyard-inspired, part eclectic-cool, and 100% fun! While guests munched on some of the delicious food from Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, (which happens to be right around the corner in the same plaza), and enjoyed tasty treats from Whole Foods, guests mingled and planned their next painting party. Amidst the wining and dining, overall artist and art instructor, Keegan Hitchcock, actually turned some of the other Painting with a Twist art instructors into living canvases that showcased some of their most popular paintings! They looked amazing!

Painting with a Twist had been preparing for this great event for months, and even gave away VIP spots to their Grand Opening paint class! VIP Facebook winners, Charlie and

Terri, were really excited to win the seats to the event, but said, “This is our first time! We hope we can do it!” This VIP event featured a beautiful tree silhouetted against a glowing

The art instructor Kelly Boyett, who came down from corporate just for this special occasion, kept it light and breezy and played games with the group the entire time! Everyone had a great time, and the only thing anyone worried about was making sure they didn’t dip their paintbrush into their drink! One guest, who had won tickets to the event, brought her husband out to paint. She said, “We are having so

much fun! This is a great thing to do on date night.” Michelle Beres said, “We are just so excited about our new studio. We’ve been embraced by the community and we can’t wait to be a part of it.”

If I Can Do It, You Can Do It! Painting with a Twist in Carrollwood is the perfect place to spend a fun evening with friends or host a special event like a bachelorette party, a

birthday party or an anniversary party. It’s also a hit with couples who are looking for something fun and unique to do on date night! They even offer Couple’s Night, where you and your special someone can paint a painting that complements your own. This way they can be hung together! Jeannie Lee said, “I can see this being the premier date night in Tampa!” Painting with a Twist has over 4800+ painting options to choose from, and while their gallery shows off but a fraction of the seemingly-limitless possibilities, the guests at the Grand Opening spent the evening perusing and choosing their favorites. From beachy landscapes to meaningful quotations put to paint, whatever your style, and more importantly, whatever your ability, Painting with a Twist makes painting easy and fun to do! Even I can do it! I have had the pleasure of painting at Painting with a Twist’s Trinity location a number of times, and every time I am shocked at what I’m able to do, because honestly I can’t even read my own handwriting half the time! My stick figure heads are detached from their bodies, it isn’t pretty! But, I have learned to relax, not over think it and just have a great time. And, every single time my family raves over the painting that I’ve

brought home. It’s true! Once I took my nine-year-old daughter, and she can’t wait to go back. So, if they can make an artist out of me, your paintings are going to be fabulous! Of course, I checked back in with Charlie and Terri, and sure enough, they had a fantastic time! Charlie said, “We will definitely come back!” It’s safe to say, that Painting with a Twist’s easy-going approach and their fun-loving artists can honestly make a painter out of anyone (even me), which means that you’re good to go! So, check out their calendar of painting events, grab a date, or maybe some friends, and join one of their classes! You can book a seat right on their website! If you have 10 or more people in your group, you even get to choose the painting! So, bring your friends, uncork, unwind and relax at Carrollwood’s coolest place to wine-down! (After all, there is a cork in the logo!) Carrollwood’s Painting with a Twist is located at 12926 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. All About Amore Cat Hospital By Matt Selby As cat owners, we know the immense joy and companionship our feline friends provide us on a daily basis. While other domesticated animals may share our home, there’s just something different about our bond with our cats. They can be so independent that sometimes it makes you wonder who really needs who in the relationship but at the end of the day your kitty always finds a way to make you smile as they cuddle up with their favorite person; YOU! It’s easy for us to forget much of the preventative health care they need to live long, healthy lives. A lot of times we just figure our cats will tell us if something’s wrong and we react from there. It’s ok, we all have missed yearly check ups here and there but it’s so important to get on a regular schedule because we not only want our furry little buddies to be around a long time, we also want them to be comfortable and as healthy as they can be for their entire life with us. We all know a trip to the vet’s of-

24

OCTOBER 2014

fice can be a stressful one for our kitties. That wonderful game of “catch me if you can” starts the stress as we try to corral our cats into the carrying cage. My cat whiskers literally would look at me with a face that just screamed “you’ll never take me alive” every single time! Then the car ride down our wonderful Florida roads full of potholes, speed bumps and those pesky curbs too close to intersections we all seem to clip. Once we arrive, most cats are petrified at this point. Whiskers would always let me know how unhappy she was with the car ride by making noises I thought only tigers or lions could produce. Then comes the anxiety our felines feel as they are taken into a place that normally has multiple animals waiting in the lobby, some of which are 5 times the size of our cats! This portion of the trip however is what sets All About Amore Cat Hospital a part. All About Amore Cat Hospital is a full service CATS ONLY veterinary care facility with none other than Susan Mango, DVM heading up the kitty care. Her expertise and compassion shines through every aspect of

her office. While she might not be able to control how stressed a cat is during the car ride in, she most definitely has perfected the art of providing a comfortable experience for cats once they arrive. Many owners simply can’t believe their cats are able to adapt and feel comfortable so quickly under the care of Doctor Mango. Some cats who needed to be sedated in a normal veterinary setting need nothing of the sort here at All About Amore. Love and care always come first

with Doctor Mango. You will never feel like just another number here because she takes the time with each and every one of her clients. “Every single cat that comes through that door I treat like my own. I treat them like part of my family because from the second they are in my care they are a part of this family,” says Dr. Mango. Doctor Mango has devoted her career

to the specialized Veterinary division of Feline only care and does so with the highest level of care and professionalism. Dr. Mango truly loves cats hence the name of her practice “All About Amore”. “I expect a higher level of customer service and believe others should expect the same out of me. I want people to know all of their options and feel comfortable with

Dr. Mango what we do for their cat because cats are more than just pets”.

FULL SERVICE Even though the name is All About Amore Cat Hospital, Dr.

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Mango is a full service Cats only Veterinarian so from check-ups to trauma, your kitty is covered! Wellness exams and yearly check ups are an essential part of a cat’s healthy lifestyle and addition to check-ups, All About Amore offers a full range of services including vaccinations, in-house lab work, surgeries, radiology, prescription medication, prescription food, microchips, euthanasia, flea and heart worm control and grooming! Yes, cats need to be groomed too and I’m not talking about shaving your cat to make it look like a baby lion although that is adorable and it is a service they provide. Grooming is very important for long hair cats especially because they can’t clean all areas themselves, most significantly when it comes to reaching their back ends. Grooming services include ear cleanings and claw clipping as well as baths, fur cuts (like the cute lion cut) and blow-drying. Along with a vast array of services, All About Amore also offers a great selection of items including toys, grooming and hygiene supplies, treats and more! Dr. Mango has extensive experience with special needs kitties and has a very special place in her heart for them. She recently suffered a heartbreaking loss in her family as her beautiful cat Bagheera passed away. Dr. Mango rescued him over 5 years ago after he was hit by a car and paralyzed in the lower half of his body. The old owners wanted to euthanize Bagheera but Dr. Mango came to his aid and gave him the best last 5 years a cat

could ask for. Even though the loss of Bagheera was devastating, Dr. Mango has a heart of gold and when she laid eyes on Roosevelt, another special needs cat who was also paralyzed on his lower half of his body she knew she was the perfect one to adopt him. Dr. Mango’s compassion and love for Felines really sets her and All About Amore Cat Hospital apart. She listens to each and every one of her client’s questions and concerns and will put in the extra time and effort to make sure everyone is informed and comfortable. Dr. Mango and her wonderful staff pride themselves on building meaningful, long lasting relationships with everyone because once you walk through those doors, you’re greeted with a warm welcome and a smile because you’re now family! Just a quick reminder…… with Halloween approaching, please remember to keep your kitties indoors. People can do terrible things especially to all black cats during this time of year. All About Amore Cat Hospital is located at 6178 Gunn Hwy. in Tampa. Their hours are Mon., Tues., and Fri. 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Wed. closed; Thurs. 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.; and every first and third Sat. of the month from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call (813) 280-2928 or visit their website at AllAboutAmoreCatHospital.com. Marchello’s offers a great selection of hot and cold appetizers, including wings, stuffed mushrooms, buffalo fried shrimp, Bruschetta, and my personal favorite – the Caprese made with thinly sliced Grande mozzarella, Roma tomatoes and fresh basil drizzled with their homemade balsamic vinaigrette. (dine in customers only so you have to come in to enjoy these wonderful specials) Lisa says, “The reason we are so fortunate to be doing so well is A. because we use nothing but the best products; B. because of the staff and the true care and concern that they put into every dish. And I’m not just blowing smoke; it’s the truth. We will not send something out if it is not the best representation of what we have; and C. because of the loyalty and warm reception we have gotten since opening in 2008. We were so greatly received by this community. We literally opened the doors and they came. The community supported us in a big way, and they continue to support us every day!” Lisa and her staff are very appreciative for the support they have received from the community and thus, make it their mission to return that support and give the same love back to those that have sustained them for the past six years. She says, “We are very community oriented

and have excellent relationships with the local schools and local organizations and charities. If there is a charity in need, we will do what we can to help them; even if it is as small as donating a tray of pasta.” Lisa also has a really good relationship with our very own Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and as a huge supporter of all things local, every Saturday she will be raffling off two tickets to a Bucs home game! “Marchello’s really is a great spot,” says Lisa. “When you walk in these doors, it doesn’t feel like a typical pizzeria. “Calendar/Briefs” Continued from page 5 Annual Retreat Builds Middle School Community of Dignity and Respect Eighth graders jumped to their feet to applaud sixth and seventh graders as they walked into the Farish Center for the beginning of the annual Middle School Retreat. It may seem small, but it is significant. The gesture highlights one of the many ways Corbett Preparatory School of IDS seeks to develop a supportive Middle School community, where students can take risks and be themselves without fear of judgment. Headmaster Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman, who led the sessions along with the Middle School teachers, returned to that theme repeatedly as she spoke to students, shared motivational videos and encouraged them to reflect. At the beginning of every school year, Middle School teachers and students gather for what has become a Corbett Prep tradition, an on-campus retreat. It takes place over two mornings and is modeled after the teacher training Dr. Swarzman has conducted for thousands of teachers worldwide. Middle School students

28

OCTOBER 2014

experience a simulation of a corporate educational retreat. The goal was to explore themes embedded in a Corbett Prep education, and students were guided through conversations on communication skills, community building and the brain’s reactions to different scenarios. Students even learned about some classroom management techniques that are included in the school’s teacher training, which more than 7,000 visitors have come to observe. Students sat with their advisory groups at long tables, intermingling all grade levels. Students stay in their advisory groups all three years of Middle School, and the retreat establishes the

groups as respectful places where students appreciate each other, said Betty George, Middle School Division Leader. The eighth graders are seen as leaders, while the sixth and seventh graders learn that their voices are honored and respected, too. “The focus is on how to build a community of dignity and respect,” George said. The retreat format integrated guided viewing of videos about accepting others’ differences and setting personal goals. Students were given time for individual reflection and journaling, along with discussions master teachers facilitated in advisory groups. When finished, they came to a

consensus as a group on the ideas they wanted to share with the rest of the Middle School. The messages reiterated the concepts of perseverance and inspiration: “Encourage and help others and have compassion.” “We must believe that we can do anything.” “If you keep trying, excellence will come.” “Always have hope in everything you do.” The Middle School retreat helps establish a community of learners who value continuous improvement and honor the uniqueness of every individual. Dr. Swarzman praised the students for their insights and contributions to the retreat. “We can do anything we want to do, either by ourselves or — more powerfully — as a group,” Dr. Swarzman said. “I encourage you to make your life at Corbett Prep the best it can possibly be.” Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS (formerly Independent Day School - Corbett Campus) is a fully accredited, nonsectarian private school located in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood. The school serves over 500 students from pre-kindergarten through

eighth grade and offers the International Baccalaureate program of study for all students. Teachers are endorsed in gifted education through a master’s level grant with the University of South Florida College of Education. Corbett Prep balances a dynamic, nurturing and safe learning environment with high standards and

high expectations to develop a positive approach to life and learning. Corbett Prep has become recognized as an exemplary school with over 7,000 visitors observing and learning from Corbett Prep teachers. Hope Children’s Home Providing a loving caring home to abandoned, abused, neglected and orphaned children from newborn to 18 years old, as the name implies, Hope Children’s Home truly is a beacon of hope to children and families throughout Tampa Bay and beyond. Relying solely on the support of the community and generous individuals, churches, businesses and organizations, Hope Children’s Home is a charitable organization that does not receive any sort of government funding, therefore it is up to us, the Tampa Bay Community, to help aid them in continuing their altruistic mission of love and care. For over 40 years, Hope Children’s Home has taken children in and tried to make a difference in their very impressionable lives and since 1968, has cared for over 5,000 children, who have come to them not only from cities across the United States, but all over the world. “We feel that God has called us to help rebuild the broken lives of these children and to build the bridge, when possible, between home, parent, and child,” says Stan Pittman, Outreach Coordinator. “The rewards

of our labor are the thousands of young people across the country who are now productive adults raising their own children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The faith that we exercise each and every day for our needs is a faith that is passed on to the children as they see God’s faithful hand of provision.” Taking a tour throughout their impressive 55-acre beautifully wooded campus, complete with separate dor-

Living in a family atmosphere with house parents who are with them twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to give guidance and encouragement, at Hope International Children’s Home each child is a son, a daughter, a sister, a brother and a friend. “Brain Balance” Continued from page 1 renowned neurologist, professor and author who strongly believes that all of these conditions, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called “Functional Disconnection Syndrome.” Children who are diagnosed with any of these conditions, actually have healthy brains! In fact, in his book, Disconnected Kids, Dr. Melillo explains that if you were to take a child with any of these conditions and give them an MRI scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. Their brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Most of us can easily be labeled “left-brained” or “rightbrained” but research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues, which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and

succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The Brain Balance here in Oldsmar is actually owned by Director Larry Polnicky, who wanted to find answers for his own son Ben, who has autism. The Polnicky family wanted a solution that didn’t require medication, and while the closest Brain Balance Center was hours away, they were so impressed with the program that they even moved for a time to be closer to it. Their experience with the Brain Balance program was so powerful that he and his wife decided to bring the opportunity to other families in our area. Larry says, “This summer is a wonderful time for parents to choose a program, like ours, that will change their child’s life.” Brain Balance offers programs all year long, and this summer they are inviting families to consider enrolling their child in a program that can honestly change lives for the better! Children who enroll in the program are usually between 5 and 18 years old, and they may have been given a “label” by a school or even a pediatrician. The staff at Brain Balance doesn’t really believe in labels, instead, they set to work using their own ex-

pert assessments and proven evaluations to find any deficiencies. Then, they develop an individualized program that is purposeful, helpful and best of all, fun! Sharing Sammy’s Success! Sammy was diagnosed as severely autistic as a child, but today he doesn’t seem to be much different than any other child his age. When he walks into the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa, he walks in like he owns the place! Everyone knows him by his name and his eager smile. While he comes here specifically for the Brain Balance program from Ottawa, Canada, Sammy has a passion for maps and could probably tell you more about this area than anyone else. He’s read more books than most 13-year-old boys, and his sense of humor is Tatiana travels from Ottawa, Canada to nothing short of charming. bring her son Sammy to Brain Balance Of course, it didn’t start out Center of Tampa that way. Balance program. When asked why she comes all the way down to Florida to have Sammy participate in the Brain Balance program, Tatiana says, “It’s worth every single penny, what they do here. What is six months compared to real life changes in your child?” On paper, his progress is significant, but Sammy is more than a label, more than a prognosis. He’s a growing boy with an incredible future ahead of him. The difference shows, but you don’t have to take it from anyone else. Sammy says, “When I started, I had low functioning autism, and I wasn’t very social. I had limited inter-

ests and very few friends. Now I’m high functioning, I’m social more and I take more interest in things, and I’m making more friends.” If you have a child who struggles with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Processing Disorders, or even Autism, call the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa.
