“I’m blessed with the ability to help others,” says Michael A. Pikos, DDS. “God gives me the skills and energy level to do what I need to do to help my patients.” Dr. Pikos and his associates at Coastal Jaw Surgery Center for Implant & Oral Reconstruction are passionate about helping their patients regain confidence and a renewed enjoyment of life through what Dr. Pikos calls the “third dentition.” This method that he helped to pioneer, also called Same Day Teeth®, is literally changing lives by giving people

who have dentures or teeth in poor repair the ability to fully enjoy the benefits of healthy, strong teeth. Losing one’s teeth due to aging, gum disease, or trauma is devastating and affects long-term physical and mental health and even employment. When considering oral surgery, it is imperative to research the physicians and facility, as not every dental practice is equal. To create a smile that is a masterpiece, you need a master. Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge, Growing with the Community Since 1971 By Julie Kanehl If you’re from around here, you’ve heard of Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge P.L. (WW&D), a firm that excels at providing exceptional counsel regarding estate planning, elder law, real estate law, corporate matters, asset protection, and tax reduction strategies. Growing with our community, they recently opened their brand new, freestanding office in Trinity, located at 10015 Trinity Boulevard. This new location is to be their main office, with two other locations in the Tampa Bay Area, a fully-staffed office in Palm Harbor, and a satellite office in the Carrollwood area of north Tampa. As our area continues to grow, WW&D has plans to further their growth as well. In fact, they are hoping to staff their office in Carrollwood sometime next year. With the main objective being to provide superior legal counsel to their clients, it

8

would only seem fit that the law firm would be committed to expanding their growth. Counsel, Care & Integrity David J. Wollinka, Esq. has lived here since he was a boy, when his father Jerome E. Wollinka started Wollinka & Wollinka in 1971. Graduating from Tarpon Springs High School before attending The University of Florida where he graduated with honors, Attorney David Wollinka earned his law degree from UF’s College of Law with a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1986, before joining his father at Wollinka & Wollinka in 1987. A family man and father of five, Attorney Wollinka can truly appreciate the value and importance of long term planning. Friendly, dedicated and experienced, David Wollinka and his staff go above-and-beyond to make each client’s concern, their concern. Ryan A. Doddridge, Esq. grew

Attorneys Ryan Doddridge (left) and David Wollinka (center) and the team at Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge are committed to their clients up in nearby St. Petersburg, and also attended The University of Florida as well as Southern Methodist University. Joining the firm in 2011, Attorney Doddridge is a happily married father of two boys, most likely future Florida Gators themselves. Ryan is active with many legal and local associations including the Trinity Rotary Club, the Clearwater Bar Association, West Pasco Estate Planning Attorneys Asso-

ciation, West Pasco Real Estate Council, and the Suncoast Guardian Association. He also serves on the Board of the North Suncoast Estate Planning Council and was recently installed as President-Elect of the West Pasco Bar Association, which will be celebrating its 50th year of service in 2016. Attorney Wollinka says, “Our firm has been a member of the West Pasco Bar Association for 45 years. My father

was a past president.” One client recently said, “Ryan and the entire staff at Wollinka, Wollinka and Doddridge are excellent. The services they provide are thorough, detailed and prompt. They remove all of the concern and frustration that many people have when dealing with legal matters.” Estate Planning, Elder Law, Probate & Trusts While it’s not always the most comfortable of subjects, estate planning is one of the most important conversations to have. The lawyers and staff at WW&D are experienced at handling these kinds of delicate matters. The truth of the matter is, you can’t afford not to have a plan, and of all the legacies to leave behind, having your plan in place could be the greatest peace during a difficult time. Far more important than dividing wealth and property, estate planning extends to guardianship, and what will happen to your children if the unimaginable were to happen. WW&D also provides services with regard to Medicaid, incapacity planning, and special needs trusts, among other services. Whether you’d

like to make a simple will for your family, you would like to create a trust for your children, or you have a complicated estate to divide, Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge can help you protect your wishes, your dignity, your legacy, and even minimize stress for your loved ones. Corporate Matters & Asset Protection If you have your own company, it’s important to know how to protect it, and to separate personal finances from your business finances, as many good people have lost more than their business from a lawsuit stemming from something that happened at their company. It’s best to be prepared, and to have attorneys like Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge at your side. Representing many businesses in the area, WW&D guides them by using strategic planning elements to prepare for the future, engaging in contract analysis, the preparation of important documents, negotiations, and if needed, representation. While there’s no way to predict the future, they can help you protect your assets. In addition to the attorneys at

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

WW&D, the staff is also knowledgeable and dedicated to the firm’s clients. Most of the staff has been with WW&D for long tenures, some for decades. Whether you’re looking towards the future, protecting what you have, or building a business, it’s important to have a reputable law firm by your side to represent you, protect your assets, and guide you through the complicated laws of our State. Choose experience, integrity and dedication: Choose Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge.

Wollinka, Wollinka & Doddridge has a Pasco County office located at 10015 Trinity Blvd. in Trinity; phone: 727-9374177. The Pinellas County office is located in Palm Harbor at 3204 Alt. 19 North; phone: 727-7815444. The Hillsborough County Satellite office in Tampa is located at 13801 N. Come Join the fun at The ToyMakers of East Lake’s Open House & Silent Auction! By Julie Kanehl Mark your calendars, and spend the morning with The ToyMakers of East Lake on Saturday, November 7th, for they will be hosting an Open House and Silent Auction at the East Lake United Methodist Church just off of East Lake Road. Free and open to the public, please feel free to bring the entire family, including the little ones who will receive one of the ToyMakers famous handmade toys! The Open House includes a tour of their recently expanded toy making workshop, which is usually closed to the public, as well as an opportunity to get to know the many amazing volunteers who have turned their handiwork into good works. Everyone will enjoy the silent auction, which will include everything from one-of-a-kind, handmade items, to gift certificates to local businesses and tickets to Florida

attractions! It’s also the perfect place to check off some of the items on your Christmas list, because by participating in this awesome auction, you’re giving back to a non-profit organization whose “soul” purpose is to give to the children in our community. ToyMakers had humble beginnings, as most matters of the heart do, and was started by a group of people in Pasco County who made simple wooden toys out of their garages and gave them to local agencies and hospitals, with the purpose of helping children who could use a smile. In 2007, ToyMakers of Eastlake was founded as an outreach program by The East Lake United Methodist Church, who saw the light and the love in the mission, and donated some space adjacent to the church so that these volunteers could have a place to

call their own. Since 1982, more than 400,000 toys have been delivered to local children in need in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, and even Alachua counties. Delivering to hospitals such as All Children’s Hospital, Tampa General, Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa, and Ronald McDonald Houses, just to name a few, these toys have stories to Bob and Janet Helms and the ToyMakers of East Lake enjoy making a difference for children. tell, and a dozen kind hands have ing something to give to children helped each toy find its special child. when they are in a crisis. Reaching far beyond Florida, toys Erica Wiedemann recently said, have been delivered to children as far “I got a tour of the ToyMakers of away as Mexico, the Caribbean and Eastlake’s workshop today…So many South America in the aftermath of volunteers work to make and paint disasters, and are often delivered to the great wooden toys. I thank the local fire departments and first reToyMakers for supporting The Haven sponders, who really appreciate havof RCS and making the children

happy. Also, there are fabulous volunteers who remake bikes for children and adults.” A third ministry is their bicycle program. ToyMakers of East Lake accepts used bicycles and refurbishes them! Once the bicycles are lovingly fixed, they are given to people in need- both children and adults! Working with local schools and other charitable organizations such as agencies assisting homeless working adults, they even help send used and refurbished bicycles to Haiti and other areas in need after a crisis, so that those people can get work and provide for their families. Current President of the ToyMakers of East Lake Board, Bob Helms, is like many of the volunteers who thought they’d come by one Saturday a month, but fell in love with the mission, and in doing so, his wife, Janet, joined the cause as well! Today they are both on the Board, hoping to help lead ToyMakers of East Lake to help even more people. By raising awareness for their mission, and by taking donations from local businesses for their upcoming silent auction, the Helms and the other volunteers at The ToyMakers of East Lake have one goal: To bring smiles to children. When you come to the Open

House and Silent Auction, on the morning of November 7th, you’ll have the opportunity to see the new addition to their shop! Recently expanded to their many volunteers, the community came together beautifully to help ToyMakers build the additional space they needed. They needed it because they’ve been super busy! Bob says, “The Toymakers of East Lake organization now has over 200 volunteers and made over 10,000 toys just last year.” Volunteer! You Can Make Toys Too! Over the years, men and women of all ages have enjoyed volunteering at ToyMakers of East Lake. While the machinery that has been donated over the years by volunteers and local organizations is quite impressive, you don’t have to know how to operate complicated machinery to help make wooden cars, helicopters, puzzles, airplanes, walking toys and more. First: These aren’t just toys. These are handmade, sanded to perfection with the purpose of protecting little fingers. These are “everything is going to be ok” toys that are lovingly painted by volunteers like you and I who want nothing more than to comfort a child. These are what the doc-

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

tors, nurses, officers and first responders give to children who are scared or sad. And may I add, that they are absolutely beautiful toys. Made with love and hand-delivered to local hospitals and first responders in small batches, this non-profit organization has created something that has touched the lives of hundreds and hundreds in our area by simply doing what they love to do. Experienced and knowledgeable in their craft, ToyMakers has learned how to take many things into consideration, from making sure that they are painted with lead-free paint (donated by Sherwin Williams), to making sure there aren’t any small parts, rough parts or parts that can’t be washed! Did you know that plush animals cannot be given to children at many hospitals because they cannot be easily sanitized? The toys that ToyMakers provide, is an answer to so many prayers, and many people treasure their toys for years and years. Bob says, “Toy Makers are people like you and me! You don’t have to be able to work complicated saws to be a volunteer here. We have one lady who really enjoys tracing patterns onto the wood, and we have other ladies who love to paint daisies on the Daisy cars.” He adds, “Whatever you

can do, there’s a way you can help!” If you’d like to volunteer, it’s easy! You can check out their website, or email them! They often have new volunteer opportunities on Saturday mornings at the shop. When you’re there, you’ll hear many of the volunteers talk about how being a ToyMaker has changed their lives, you see, for some this mission has given people a new purpose! For some, it has been having a renewed purpose after retirement, while for others it has been finding a whole group of friends they didn’t know they were there waiting to meet them. Additionally, ToyMakers of East Lake is proud to partner with students who are part of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which provides scholarship opportunities for students in our area who have very bright futures, but need help financially. These students need volunteer hours as part of the program, and many of the students who volunteer for ToyMakers of East Lake have found themselves coming back once their volunteer requirements have been met! They become volunteers for the love of helping others instead of just for credit! Jim Dyer put it best when he recently said, “Great people with a great mission!” The ToyMakers of East Lake will hold their Open House and Silent Auction on Saturday, November 7th, 2015 from 9:30 a.m.12 p.m. at the East Lake United Methodist Church located at 2801 E Lake Rd S, Palm Harbor, FL. The ToyMakers of East Lake have a workshop is located at 2690 Tanglewood Trail in Palm Harbor, FL 34685, behind the East Lake United Methodist Church. Dance Excellence Ballroom – Creating Community in Tampa Bay! By Deborah Bostock-Kelley It is Dance Excellence Ballroom owner Stefan Dobrev’s goal to get people off of the couch watching Dancing with the Stars and into his ballroom to create their very own dancing adventure. “Instead of watching what other people are doing and saying oh, I wish I could do that, you need to do it,” said Stefan. “People think with ballroom dancing you have to compete, but actually only 10 to 20% of students in the dance studio compete. The majority does dance for fun, health, and exercise. It teaches you how to communicate with a partner and shows you how to work together. It’s a great date night activity for couples who want to bring that flame back up.” Dobrev, a dancer since the age of 7 and a Bulgarian National Dance Champion, prides himself of having a studio both his students and instructors enjoy coming to. Eight full-time instructors, and a ninth coming on by year’s end, are not only certified, but are required to participate in continu-

22

ous education, with their skills tested every 6 to 8 months. Ballroom students range from ages 17 to 80, and through a structured program, can check their progress, right along with their instructor. Dobrev himself tests the students to make sure they are getting everything they wanted out of their lessons. Dobrev says, “We are trying to create a community. We love that we are growing, and the best part is sometimes we actually have difficulty getting our students out of here; they love being here that much. We’ve been here since 12 o’clock and it’s now 10 o’clock at night; we have to go home, I tell them.” Opened in November 2014, Dobrev is pleased to have created a place where people can meet, form friendships, and find people with similar interests and hobbies. “It’s so inspirational and that’s what I wanted to create – a place where people want to come to – whether they are teachers or students.” At Dance Excellence Ballroom, clients can learn both International

and American Style Ballroom dances, including Salsa, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Samba, Tango, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, and Swing. Lessons are available privately or in a group class setting and you don’t need to bring a partner, unless you want to. “What I love about dancing is it is something no one can take away from you,” said Dobrev. “It’s like education. When you learn, it’s not the certification document; it’s the experi-

ence throughout time that makes you what you are. Unlike hobbies like golf or tennis, with dancing you don’t need a special place. If there is music, you can dance.” When asked if there was ever a person that Dobrev couldn’t teach to dance, he responded decisively. “No. Everyone can learn how to dance, but it depends on the level that they want to learn and how much time that they want to invest, and how good they

want to be.” Besides looking skilled on any dance floor, the benefits of ballroom dancing come in four main categories: Ballroom dancing is a social experience, as ‘partner dancing’ requires communication and teamwork, and helps create friendships and community. Even some romantic relationships have been born from holding hands and consciously listening and responding to the moves of your dance partner. Ballroom dancing is mentally stimulating, necessitating listening,

planning, sequential learning and problem solving. According to research, like the 2003 Bronx Aging Study, activities that challenge the mind may prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s in older adults. Because ballroom dancing involves precise physical activity, listening to the beats in music, remembering dance steps, and taking your partner into account, it is mentally challenging. Emotionally, ballroom dance helps build confidence and poise, and can help people overcome shyness. And finally, ballroom dancing is as

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

physical as going to the gym to work out; however, less stressful on the body. “Ballroom dancing is easier on the muscles and joints, but still you get plenty of exercise,” Dobrev said. “It makes you very disciplined because you have to repeat the moves over and over and over again.” On September 26th eleven students of Dance Excellence showed off their dancing and competed in the Tampa Bay Classic at Hilton Car-

illon Park. This level of partcipation in a local competitive event is a tremendous accomplishment when you consider this dance studio has been open for less than a year. Long-term, Dobrev hopes to start an afterschool program for children to share the values he learned growing up in ballroom dancing. “Dancing is about being a gentleman and a lady,” said Dobrev. “The lady has a grace and poise. The man has dignity and is a gentleman. You walk on the dance floor and take your lady with you. You bow before you start dancing. You take her in your arms and move across the floor. You finish the dance and you bow again to your dance partner. It teaches you so many things of how to communicate as a team.” “Dancing is not about knowing steps – it’s a way of life.” Dance Excellence Ballroom is located in the Oldsmar Plaza at 3730 Tampa Road, Suite 7. They are open Monday through Friday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. They will be having a movie-theme dance showcase on November 13. For more information about group or private lessons or dance parties, visit www.DanceExcellenceBallroom.com or call (813) 814-0099.

Under Armour Co-Ed Flag Football League Beginning this winter in Tampa is a nationwide co-ed flag football league sponsored by Under Armour and Brothers In Arms Foundation. The flag football league was created to promote a competitive, confidence-building, non-contact football experience for all skill levels. In charge of the Tampa chapter is John Kaleo, former Tampa Bay Storm quarterback and owner of one of the top quarterback academies in the country (John Kaleo QB Academy). John says, “Unlike other flag football leagues, what made me gravitate to Under Armour was the format we are using; a 7 on 7 structure designed to delop each player’s skills. This means there is no pass rush and just a sack count, which allows the QB to set his feet and deliver the ball properly while receivers and defenders can develop the timing needed in the passing game. We also transition the kids from the 6 on 6 format into the high school 7 on 7 game through grade levels, so the 7th-8th graders will play under the HS 7 on 7 rules.” When asked what he enjoys most about this league John said, “I enjoy watching the development of our youth in the athletic arena as they learn to compete

26

while still showing sportsmanship. We also want to bring back the honoring of our Champions and rewarding them with medals and trophies, instead of everyone getting a medal for participation. The other thing that is neat about our league is we play our games on Friday nights so we have food vendors and music present for our families. This creates a fun atmosphere for everyone.” With most leagues running on weekends I’m sure parents will be happy with the Friday night schedule and keeping the rest of the weekend open for any other family activities. The league will consist of these core values and principles: • Competitive Co-ed league for grades K-8th • 6v6 format with sack count • HS 7v7 format for grades 7th-8th • 7 weeks of Games plus Playoffs • 9 players per team so everyone plays • “Friend/Team” request • Online shopping for discounted Under Armour apparel • Food & Entertainment for Families

sistance to existing organizations, where the need is significant, with an emphasis on educational opportunities and financial assistance for service members, heroic community servants,

and their families. For more information or to register for the league please go to www.uaflag.com. The season runs from December through February.

Proceeds will go to the Brothers In Arms Foundation, which honors fallen soldiers and provides funding as-

Columns are another way to completely change the look of your front entryway. Capital Millwork has a great selection of columns that cover every architectural style from classic colonial to the many styles of craftsman columns. Made to be carefree and lasting, these columns are made from an advanced composite material that is super-strong and resilient. The structural columns are made to be weight bearing and can replace existing structural columns that have rotted, or they can be used purely for aesthetic purposes. These columns look like real wood and are maintenance-free – no scraping, no painting, no worries! If you have decking that needs replacing, Capital Millwork has a solution that lasts! won’t rot, fade or warp so it is perfect for decks and balconies, and can even be installed directly over unsightly, cracked concrete. The decking comes in a variety of colorfast colors and has the same skid resistance whether it is wet or dry. Moldings really dress up your home and give it a custom look, but it can be hard to choose a favorite style. Capital Millwork has a wall full of molding samples that you can take home with you to see what style looks best. “We try to make things as convenient as possible for our customers,” says Bob. “We will give you these molding samples, but we will also loan out the cabinet hardware so that people can take several styles home to see what they prefer. If we don’t have something a customer wants, we’ll get a sample for them to see before they place an order.” Capital Millwork even carries a flexible molding, which is the perfect solution for curved archways and window transoms. This flexible molding can mimic any wood species to match existing moldings or it can be painted. Many homes have the standard, builder-grade flat mirrors in the bathrooms. a wick for moisture bringing the wetness up into the jamb and rotting it out. This is not only ugly, but it invites pests such as termites. Manufacturers have tried to come up with solutions in the past with pressure-treated jambsaver where a small piece of pressure treated wood is inserted on bottom side of jamb, but Bob says, “those also fail.” But Capital Millwork has a solution that will not fail and which just makes sense financially. Bob explains that a side garage door is not a big expense – at a big box store you can purchase one for around $132 (s/b $170), but for a little more, you can purchase a full-composite side garage ror, and Capital Millworks can help you choose from dozens of molding styles that are custom-ordered according to your measurements. The molding comes ready to install with a super strength adhesive stripping tape that adheres the molding right on top of your existing mirror, and installs easily so most people can do it themselves. Many love the look of pecky cypress, but if you’ve ever priced the coveted wood then you know how pricey it is. Capital Millwork has an affordable, beautiful, easy-to-install solution. So for not much more money, you have a maintenance-free, rot-free, worry-free side garage door with a lifetime warranty. “Once and you’re done! All you have to do is clean it,” says Bob. Capital Millwork is located at 32704 US Hwy. 19 North in Palm Harbor, behind Chick-fil-a. Their showroom is open Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and by appointment.
