Local Author Publishes “The Vulnerable”, an Intriguing Non-Fiction Novel About Saving Her Brother From True Evil Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with local author Betsy MacDonald to talk about her new book, “The Vulnerable”. A true story, The Vulnerable is an intriguing book about Betsy’s Autistic brother Michael who suffers from Asperger’s and her journey to reconnect with her family and help Michael escape a tortuous relationship with a couple that was supposedly caring for him while all the while they were taking advantage of him, abusing, and even poisoning him, slowly trying to murder him and make it look like an accident just to gain his inheritance. The Vulnerable has all the makings of a Hollywood thriller, but like I said, this tale is unfortunately nonfiction. Speaking of Hollywood, Betsy is meeting with some movie producers that sought her out after reading her book, so a screenplay

may very well be next. During our interview Betsy described to me some of the horrible things that these sick people did to her brother; it made my stomach flip flop. I can’t imagine how anyone could live with himself or herself after committing such heinous acts; manipulating an autistic person for their own personal gain. It’s absolutely disgusting, and when I asked Betsy what her ultimate goal was in telling her story she replied, “I just want to make people aware of what can happen to the ones we love, especially those who may become vulnerable without the right people in their lives. I want to help people see that they need to make a plan, especially if they have a child or a loved one with Autism. I want people to really think about what could happen to that person if they weren’t

around, that way they can prepare and hopefully prevent something terrible from happening, because once it’s too late there might not be anyone around to protect them.” I don’t want to give too much of the book away, but what I will report is that Betsy has saved Michael and he currently lives with Betsy and her husband locally. I personally have a close friend, whom I’ve known since high school, with Asperger’s so this story really hits home for me. Betsy says, “Knowledge is power. It is my wish that by hearing our story, maybe one person’s life can be saved!” Betsy MacDonald’s book “The Vulnerable” is for sale at Amazon.com. Betsy is a psychiatric R.N. holding positions as a Mental Health Director, where she lectures the public and health agencies. She

has also run a hospital as Director of Nursing and has counseled and evaluated youth in school settings. She is a nationally published author with non-fiction cover stories. This true mystery has clairvoyance, hauntings, and gut wrenching emotion on a journey to crack her birth families code of silence. VULNERABILITY is forefront in attempt to save her Asperger's Autistic brother. To contact Betsy visit www.TheVulnerable.net.

Local Teachers Need Your Help! Bless Baby Bennett! Born on June 15, 2015, Bennett Rohrbacker is a gift to this world. Born with many special needs, however, at two weeks old, Bennett was diagnosed with 18q Deletion Syndrome, which is a genetic deletion on the 18th chromosome. Due to this deletion, he spent the first 8 weeks of his life with both of his legs in casts because of a foot malformation, and will be undergoing surgery to correct his right foot in a few months. In addition to this syndrome, Bennett has also been diagnosed with hypotonia, or low muscle tone. He takes several medications each day: one for hypothyroidism; one for pylori spasm (a condition that prevents his stomach from emptying properly); and a cream for his eczema. He also has an aberrant right subclavian artery, where his right subclavian artery passes by his esophagus. Bennett’s parents, local Tampa teachers Natalia and Craig

Rohrbacker, have done an amazing job of giving Bennett and his older, 2year old brother Rowan all the love and attention they need. They have shown unending patience with both an infant who cries frequently and an energetic two-year-old boy – not to mention all of the students they work with each day. They have an unshakable faith in God, which is how they get their strength each day. Most recently, Bennett was found to have moderate hearing loss in his right ear and profound hearing loss in his left ear. His hearing loss will require assistive hearing devices for both ears – which insurance does not cover. These are just some of the difficulties children with 18q Deletion Syndrome tend to face, along with a possibility of autism and other developmental delays. With each specialist visit comes fifty-dollar co-pay plus additional, medical costs. Due to these expensive medical

costs, Bennett’s godmother Julie is asking for your help. She says, “I would love to be able to take some of the worry off of their shoulders by providing them with money for Bennett’s hearing devices, as well as all of his other current and future medical costs. Natalia and Craig are truly a blessing to baby Bennett. I am hoping that others will want to give them

blessings back – in the form of prayers and finances if you are able. Thank you for listening and God bless!” To help donate towards baby Bennett’s hearing aids, please visit www.YouCaring.Com and in the top right search bar type “Bless Baby Bennett”. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

Hillel Academy partners with Tampa Urban Benefit Farms and Hillsborough County Family Partnership Alliance Hillel Academy is not new to gardening. The school has had an Earth Box vegetable garden for many years, but now the school has a true farm program and it is the first school-based TUB Farm hydroponic farm in the Tampa Bay area! Hillel Academy partnered with TUB Farms, Tampa Urban Benefit Farms, a local non-profit organization that gives students multiple learning opportunities while providing fresh produce to food insecure members of our community. The school is the first school in a pilot program designed to connect “farmer” schools with beneficiary agencies that will distribute the vegetables and herbs to their clients while the students learn about innovative agriculture and grow systems. TUB Farm founder Nava Kirk approached Head of School Amy Wasser with the idea of placing a TUB Farm on school property. It was a natural choice to reach out to Hillel Academy, Tampa Bay’s premier community day school, as Ms. Kirk is a school alumna. Middle School science teacher Amy

Basham serves as Hillel Academy’s liaison and TUB Farm manager. According to Ms. Kirk, “Hillel Academy is a progressive school that I knew would embrace a program like TUB Farms. The incredible reception from students and faculty is more than we could have hoped for. We understand that teachers are incredibly busy, so we are designed it as a program to assist teachers with maintaining the TUB Farm, as well as to provide guidance on curriculum, give tours to students and coordinate the donation of the vegetables.” “We are only as healthy as the food we put into our bodies, and for far too many in our community who rely on food assistance, the access to truly healthy nutritious food is extremely limited,” says Ms. Kirk. “Students at Hillel Academy and TUB Farms would like to be part of the solution.” The first donation was made on Nov. 6, 2015 to HCFPA, Hillsborough County Family Partnership Alliance, which helps people in the dependency system including foster parents and relative caregivers. Vegetable donations from Hillel Academy will directly benefit those who depend on the HCFPA food pantry.

“HCFPA is excited about the new partnership with Hillel Academy and the TUB Farms. We look forward to sharing fresh fruits and vegetables with the foster families and the needy of our community that come to our food pantry to a receive food on a monthly basis,” says Kim Hernandez, HCFPA President. The TUB Farm is a school-wide endeavor at Hillel Academy. Each class attended hydroponic farm lessons and planted its own tower of 16 plants, which they monitor frequently. The TUB Farm vegetables were grown from both seed and seedling and almost every student has planted his or her own seed or sprout. Fall crops growing at Hillel Academy include cucumbers, swiss chard, lettuce, squash, green beans and basil. “In my opinion,” says Mrs. Basham, “growing food crops contributes an incredibly important aspect to a child's education. In today's world of processed and factory-produced everything, students often forget that much of their food originated as a plant that can be grown, harvested and enjoyed. All branches of science can be taught through the simple process of growing a vegetable

garden. When students are able to contribute to growing vegetables, they are able to connect with the science, see its validity in their lives, and hopefully learn to make wise sciencebased food choices as they grow up. If we can add an element of donating the vegetables to serve our community, the experience becomes even more meaningful.” TUB Farms worked with Urban Oasis Farm Technology to design the school’s hydroponic farm. By studying and working with a hydroponic farm the students are learning that hydroponic growing methods do not use synthetic chemicals to treat bugs and disease. The system uses sterile, reusable growing medium; coco coir, instead of soil, which is sterile, sustainable and renewable. With the system, the desired amount of food is delivered to the plant’s roots. Hillel Academy students receive more than a science education as they work on the school’s TUB Farm. They practice one of the most important concepts in Judaism, tikkun olam – repairing the world. Community service is very important to the community day school’s students of all ages. Donating schoolgrown crops to HCFPA is a perfect fit.

Trinity Family Physicians Surprise 15-Year-Old Caitlin Shannon With the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Caitlin Shannon is remarkable! She makes a difference to so many children in the Tampa Bay Area who are hospitalized by giving them something to smile about! Caitlin created Sparkle Power, a charity organization that gives goody bags filled with fun items to bring “the power of a little sparkle” to children who really need something to lift their spirits. It is no surprise that the 15-year-old was chosen by Trinity Family Physicians’ own Dr. Stephanie Eldridge and Dr. Amir Shirmohammad as the second recipient of the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Committed to their patients and active in the Tampa Bay Area where they both grew up, the husband-and-wife team of physicians started the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award to bring recognition to individuals who make a difference in the lives of others locally. Dr. “Shirmo” explains, “There are so many terrible things going on

around the world. Dr. Eldridge and I just felt that we have to do something to make people feel happy and good.” With this Award, the doctors are able to honor individuals who work to put smiles on the faces of many, and they hope you will feel inspired at hearing Caitlin’s story. Caitlin suffered irreversible nerve damage during gall bladder surgery when she was just 13 years old. In and out of hospitals for two years while doctors searched for what was causing her excruciating pain, Caitlin bonded with many children and their families and resolved to make a difference for them. Wise beyond her years, she shares, “When someone is first diagnosed with a chronic illness or chronic pain, other people are so good about coming to the hospital and being involved in the first weeks but then it always dies down. I just wanted to do something to bring them happiness.” Caitlin and her family started

do a lot! Now Sparkle Power is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that can continue to bring happiness to little ones in the hospital. Caitlin’s mom Brooke is a powerhouse herself and she gave her daughter some brilliant advice worth sharing. Brooke said, “I always talk to her about building your team. We all have people who want to help and

support us – they are on our team – and it’s important to build your team. Like our guy at Sips Specialty Coffee House [on Gunn Hwy.] – he sees us coming and has our order ready every time, and before I can say, ‘We’re in a hurry,’ he is handing out the coffee and muffins. He is on our team.” I think I can speak for Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge when I say that after meeting Caitlin, we all want to be on her team! Caitlin is active in her high school’s drama program and according to her mother Brooke; she is an amazing and attentive big sister to her three younger siblings. Her charity, Sparkle Power, is sure to continue to grow and bring smiles to children throughout Tampa Bay who are in our local hospitals. Currently, Caitlin is running Sparkle Power out of her bedroom, which her mom says is stacked with trays and bins of supplies for the Sparkle Power bags. One local school has gotten onboard, teaming with Sparkle Power and gathering supplies through the holidays to fill the bags that will put some sparkle in a child’s day. One Angie’s List member writes, “I have used Yeager Flooring in the past (about 4 years ago) to install

hardwood flooring in my living room, dining room and hallways and had a fabulous experience. So when we decided to replace the carpet in one of our bedrooms with hardwood floors, we knew we would only consider giving the job to Jim Yeager and his company. Jim is the ultimate professional and he is THE VERY BEST at what he does. He’s the only vendor I’ve used in Tampa that does WHAT he says his company is going to do, WHEN they say they’re going to do it and for HOW MUCH they are going to do it. You simply can’t get better than Yeager Flooring!” Another Angie’s List member, who used Yeager and Co. to completely remodel the master suite, shares, “This is the second major remodeling job we have done with Yeager. We did our did our due diligence and met with some other contractors obtaining estimates, but again chose to do business with Yeager based upon the price, comfort level with Yeager, and (most importantly) our satisfaction with the previous job. We had a good idea of what we wanted and worked with their designer Melanie to fill in the details. She was great to work with and Jim Yeager also kept the project in line and on time. Jim Yeager clearly cares about the quality of the finished project.” “I could not have asked for more,” says another reviewer. “They were timely, professional and provided service above and beyond my expectations. The best contractor I have ever worked with. I highly recommend Jim Yeager and his staff. I have relied on Yeager & Co. for many years for home renovation needs. They have done kitchen remodeling, flooring, and general contracting work on my property. This project involved converting an outdated tub to a shower. The entire process was seamless with excellent communication. As usual, the job was done on time and in a tidy manner. Jim goes out of his way to accommodate the schedule of a working professional.” Call Yeager and Company, Inc. at 813-918-2737 or 727-375-7813 to arrange a Shop-At-Home appointment.
