Tarpon Springs High School Students Chosen to Perform in NYC in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Have you ever watched a performance of the highly acclaimed Cirque Du Soleil? It’s a colorful display of mesmerizing acrobatics, music, and dance that delights the senses with the synchronized movement of the performers that leaves you on the edge of your seat! “These kids could do that!” is what I’m thinking when I watch the incredibly talented Colorguard team of Tarpon Springs High School. Their performances are more like theatrical displays that dazzle crowds every weekend during high school football games, and at competitions throughout the state of Florida and around the country all year long. And only a hand selected few of those talented Tarpon Springs High School Colorguard students have been chosen from over 14,000 schools across the U.S., to be elite members of

the 2016 MACY’S Great American Marching Band in the 90th Annual New York City Thanksgiving Day Parade. What an incredible honor for these local students and community pride for Tarpon Springs and the state of Florida, with 25 students selected from Florida schools and 7 from Tarpon Springs High School! Ryan Tatum, the co-captain of the team, does extra homework for fun, and has plans to explore the medical field after high school, loves the thrill of performance and working towards a collaborative effort. Chelsea Earley, who took a leap of faith to change schools her senior year so she could have the opportunity to grow as a performer at Tarpon Springs, has a mind for engineering and math, and loves the challenge of the skilled precision required to be on the rifle line. Jill Ferrone, whose friends describe her as the ‘most loving and compassionate person,’ has plans to go into nursing after high

school, is a graceful dancer who is thrilled about this ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to share her talents in the parade. Alex Bess, with her charming smile and passion for dance, has never been on a plane before, but can hardly wait to travel to New York City with her best friends for this adventure! Hana Gleason, who is self-assured and desires to become an FBI agent someday, loves the exhilaration of performing and inspiring the crowd. [Editor’s Note: After this article was written and just before press date, we found out that two more students, Samantha Haag and Haleigh Elks, were chosen to represent the Tarpon Springs High School Color Guard in the 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We regret we don’t have more information. Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles congratulates all of these hardworking high school students on their exceptional performance that has earned them this prestigious honor.] When I ask them why do they

put in over 25 hours a week of practice (3 days a week after school for 4 hours! And all day on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.!) in addition to 7

morning in New York City. The air is crisp and cool, you can feel the excitement and joy of the crowd as you see the beginning of the procession that features giant balloons and larger than life characters, musical performances from Broadway shows, floats, celebrity appearances and others participating in this world renown event. As these girls step off from Central Park, the Band of 200 hand selected students from around the U.S. will be cheered by 3 million live spectators, before arriving at Macy’s Herald Square for their national classes a day and the intense course work and homework that comes along with that? They tell me because they ‘love to dance,’ that the ‘thrill of performance’ allows them to freely express themselves, as they delight the crowd. They also are committed to working as a team, becoming ‘their best selves, and making their coaches and directors proud.’ I notice something else in these girls. I see our community’s future leaders…girls who not only inspire others but also by their dedication and commitment, show what’s possible when you put your mind to it and share your talents

with the world. And on November 24th in New York City that is what they will get to do if we can help them get there! The trip will cost $2,000 per girl. That includes the cost of participation, a full week’s stay including meals and transportation, round-trip flights to New York City, their costumes, some sightseeing, and a leadership seminar. And while this is an incredible honor to be selected, the cost of the trip is not provided and these amazing kids need the community’s support to help them achieve that. performance for more than 50 million TV viewers watching the broadcast live on NBC. It will be a defining moment, the perfect orchestration of all their hard work to shine and represent their school and community in front of the world. Indeed, it will be the trip of a lifetime. Massage Green Spa: Luxury Everyone Can Afford By Marcy Sanford If you’ve ever found yourself wishing you had time or money in your budget for monthly massages and facials, Massage Green Spa, now open in the New Tampa Shopping Center, is here to make your wish come true. They’ve only been open a few months but during that time they’ve become the go to spa for massages and facials that leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated - helping you live a healthier, happier life. Before opening Massage Green Spa, Managing Partner Todd Phillips was a COO with All Care Medical where he became interested in the health benefits of massage. “Part of our care for our patients included acupuncture and massage and I saw first hand the benefits that massage could have to someone’s health and well-being. Our family had known about Massage Green Spa for several years and liked their focus on the health benefits of massage, facials, and infrared saunas and the fact that they are an environmentally conscious company.” Massage: There are many benefits to massage. In addition to helping relieve your daily stress and tension, a regular regimen of massage therapy can help reduce chronic aches and pains, boost your immune system, improve your sleep, and enhance your quality of life. All of the massage therapists at Massage Green Spa are licensed massage therapists from accredited institutions. They take time to talk to you about the issues you are having and customize your massage to fit your body and mind’s needs. You can even request aromatherapy to enhance your experience with a blend

of essential oils to relax, energize, reduce stress, or balance or add hot stones for extra heat to help lead to deeper relaxation. Massage Green Spa has a couple’s room for a special date night or friends’ night out. Each room is designed to help you achieve maximum relaxation. “We want everyone to be able to reap the benefits of massage,” said Todd. Sunlighten Infrared Sauna: The Sunlighten Infrared Sauna at Massage Green Spa is the perfect compliment

to a massage or can be used alone. “Because it is a full spectrum infrared sauna, it provides more efficient delivery of heat than traditional saunas,” explained Todd. “This is the same technology used in hospitals. It heats at a dermal/cellular level and increases your blood flow to improve cardiovascular health, increases collagen production in your skin for healthier, younger looking skin, and helps reduce pain in your muscles and joints. It can also be a wonderful tool for weight loss. In one 30-minute session you’ll burn 600 calories just

sitting there. Plus many people find they are able to handle the heat in the infrared sauna much better than a traditional sauna which just heats the ambient air.” The Infrared Sauna at Massage Green Spa is WiFi enabled so you can pull up your Pandora account to listen to music or sign in to Netflix to catch up on your latest favorite show. You can also connect to your Fitbit or any Bluetooth enabled device to track your health benefits. Facials: Massage Green Spa wants to help your overall health and a European Spa Facial from their

Exclusive Interview with Rays’ Pitching Prospect Brandon Lawson As a young child, especially one that grows up playing sports, playing for your hometown team, in front of a hometown crowd is something that dreams are made of. For right-handed pitcher Brandon Lawson that dream got a little bit closer as the Tampa Bay area resident, who even spent his collegiate career in Tampa at the University of South Florida, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays this past June. “It was awesome to be able to be drafted by my home town team. I will have the chance for a lot of family and friends to be able to come see me not far from home and hopefully I can make my dreams come true and make it to St. Pete in the majors for the Tampa Bay Rays.” The twenty-one year old had a successful collegiate career at USF including this past season when he was serving up clutch performances on the mound for the Bulls. It was also around that time that he had an idea

that a professional career might be the next step. “My pre-draft experience was awesome. I got to go work out for four teams and it was a very memorable experience for me and my family. I worked out for the Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and the New York Mets. After about a month into the college season this year, I could tell that my dreams were about to come true if I just kept working hard and controlling what I could control.” As many would expect, there are always adjustments when making a transition to another level of play. “The biggest adjustment I’ve had to make would be getting used to throwing seven days a week and being at the baseball field from 1pm to 10pm everyday as well. It was a grind this season.” After signing with the Tampa Bay, Lawson was assigned to the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New YorkPenn League, the rookie league affiliation for the Rays.

He had a solid 2016 season for the Renegades, earning a 6-1 record in 16 relief appearances, with a 2.03 ERA, two saves and 27 strikeouts in 31 innings. “I felt like it was an easy transition from college to the pros with just being able to stay down in the zone and attack hitters in and out. But I fully understand that there is still a lot to learn about this game and how to

pitch and I am looking forward to every bit of it.” In the New York-Penn League Semi-Finals against the Lowell Spinners, Lawson earned a victory in relief helping the Renegades advance to the league Finals. But the magical run ended in a loss to the State College Spikes. “Playing in the postseason in my first season was an awesome experi-

After a successful season, Lawson is right on track both mentally and physically to make those hometown dreams come true. Brandon was also kind enough to answer a few fun questions: What age did you begin playing baseball? “I started playing baseball at the age of three.” Did you play any other sport(s) growing up? “I never really played any other sports besides baseRays’ Pitching Prospect Brandon Lawson ball. I played a year of middle school basketball and two years ence and everything you dream about going into pro ball. It may not of middle school golf and two years of high school golf.” be the majors, but you are going after a ring and its more experience Who is/was your biggest baseball infor you and the other guys to see fluence? what you can do when you are play“My biggest baseball influence in ing for a championship.”

my life would have to be my father and my older brother David. They pushed me and guided me in the right direction to make me into the baseball player I am today and have gotten me to where I am.”

Favorite off-season hobby or activity? “My favorite off-season hobby would just have to be, being outside fishing or adventuring or road tripping, but also just spending time with my friends and family.”

Have you played any other positions other than pitcher? “Growing up I played everywhere on the field. I played mainly shortstop and pitcher. As I grew older and bigger I moved to center field and first base in high school.”

Which baseball team were you a fan of? “I was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals growing up because I am originally from there. But have been a fan of the Rays since moving to Florida, really like what their organization is about.”

If you weren’t playing baseball what would you be doing? Other career aspirations/interests? “Well in college, I majored in criminology, so I would probably be pursuing that dream as well or go into fire school possibly because I’ve always had that interest as well since my father was a fire fighter for 26 years.”

It hasn’t been that long but, what did you miss most about the Tampa Bay area? “I just missed my friends and family and going out to the beaches and fishing and the warm weather all the time.”

Heavenly Heat wing sauce and marinade is fantastic! I may be a little bias because Davis Salo, the creator of Heavenly Heat is a good friend of mine but I think it’s the best stuff in the world! Not only is the hot sauce an old family recipe that tastes amazing, but David’s story is even more incredible. Let’s talk about how Heavenly Heat LLC was born! It all started with prayers, love and support from others. In 2012 a hot sauce owner by the name of David Salo was ready to move into the retail market and had been searching for the right person to help take him there. Little did David know at the other side of the state was a desperate mother praying for a way to pay medical bills and help her son survive, this was Josie. Josie is Nathan’s mom and Nate had been battling brain cancer that he was diagnosed with on August 28th 2012. David and his family held a benefit for Nate to help with his medical bills and the event was a

great success that helped the family pay off a large bill accumulated from the All Children’s Hospital. This was so helpful to Josie, Nate and his family. A fellowship of love, prayers and passion formed within the two families. Through conversations and listening to each other’s stories and goals David and Josie discovered they shared something more than just the goal of helping Nate. Josie worked in retail and had most of her life to David’s surprise. As David and Josie continued to discuss his current business plan they both realized that not only did God send David into their lives but by David doing an act of kindness, God also brought Josie into his life to help him achieve his goals. David’s goal was to be in retail grocery stores, yet was in several smaller grocery locations for years. David was soon to find out that his goal was larger than just grocery stores, it was to help others in need. Well the moral of the story goes like this, after over almost 2 years “Heavenly Heat Wing Sauce and Marinade” was born. How did

long way to go, but we have more ideas and bigger plans for the company. We believe it’s way bigger than us and this opportunity will give us at Heavenly Heat, a way to give back to other children in need. The support we have had from our families and friends is astonishing. People believed in us and supported us through thick and thin and here we are a little over a year. Big plans for Heavenly Heat and Nate’s future because when it was all said and done David Salo gave Nathan Dodds 49% of his company to show his love for the cause. Not only will Nate have support for his medical bills he will also have support and a career for his future. Nathan now even works at Publix just like many local teenagers have before him.
