The Lokey Motor Company Has 60 Years of Sales, Service & Success

A year ago Trinity was introduced to a new concept in art entertainment that includes a little bit of paint, a little bit of wine, and a whole lot of fun. The original Painting with a Twist was started by two women in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Their idea quickly spread to 60 franchises in only two years. Trinity’s Painting With a Twist’s owners Sharon Reis and Michelle Beres make art accessible to everyone through their belief that you can create fun art, not fine art. Sharon says that anyone can do it – it’s not about perspective or the color wheel, but about having fun in the two or three hours you’re painting. “The community has embraced us,” says co-owner Sharon Reis. “We

opened this franchise because we wanted to bring a new and creative opportunity to the Trinity region. Over the past year we’ve loved seeing people uncork their inner artist.” At Painting With a Twist you’ll leave from your night out with your own Painting With a Twist has hundreds of paintings that are masterpiece, and featured in classes. The Lokey Motor Company has these things in spades, and takes pride in creating long-lasting relationships with their customers. From The Editor Kim Thomas

Have a Joyful and Delicious Thanksgiving! We are thankful for you, dear readers. All of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving filled with all the wonderful things that satisfy the soul. A delicious feast shared with loved ones is hard to beat. Whether you are spending the holidays with a small intimate group of friends or the whole dang family, take some time to put your feet up and just breathe! Then, when you are relaxed, let your mind wander to all the things that you have to be thankful for. And no matter how crazy your life may be, there is something to be thankful for if you’ll take the time to reflect. Maybe, like me, you’ll be thankful the election is finally over and you’re not bombarded with political ads on the tube and in the mailbox! Or you could be thankful that the baby is learning to crawl right on time or your pup finally learned to go outside to do his business. Grandparents may be thankful for the grandkids who remind them of the wonder and joy of youth.

It may be that you are so happy the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won a game, or your little league team is playing well. There are big things and small things that happen every day and though life isn’t always perfect – you are alive. And that is something to be thankful for. Just remember, life is messy but a hot shower always feels good. Usually we put out one paper at a time, but when the holidays come around we hustle it up to get in some family time. We will be working hard this month to put two papers out on the day before Thanksgiving so we can all relax for a few days – it seems like that is how it works out every year. And you know, even though it is more work, it always goes smoothly every year. That is something I am very thankful for – coworkers who are likeminded and who also are dear friends. Even though Neighborhood News & Lifestyles is family-owned and operated, there are a few of us who aren’t related. But we feel like we are definitely part of the Neighborhood News

family and when the going gets tough, this “family” gets tougher! And then we go have some fun! I will be traveling to Carrabelle, Florida to have Thanksgiving with the whole dang family. And there are a lot of us! I’m so thankful for my family my hubby and kids especially! I’m so happy my parents have a beautiful piece of property where neighbors are scarce and wildlife is plentiful, and we can be as loud as we want! I’m thankful that my five siblings are healthy and happy. I can’t wait for all the cousins to fish off the dock, throw the football around and tease each other relentlessly. I’m thankful that we are a diverse family with all types – something that has made each of us grow as individuals. It isn’t always easy to accept others’ differences but when you have love, those differences become endearing. Life is constantly changing and throwing challenges our way, but the challenges, the sadness and the pain make the good times even better!

Community News Briefs

Letter from Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco We continue to make strides against the sale of synthetic drugs in Pasco County. I am pleased that the Pasco Board of County Commissioners recently voted to enact an ordinance that will severely penalize any retailers who continue to sell this poison. The county ordinance targets store owners based on the packaging and marketing of the drugs, and levies a $500 civil fine for EACH individual package that a store owner possesses. Even before the ordinance passed, the efforts of your Pasco Sheriff’s Office Vice and Narcotics Unit detectives have made a strong impact on the sellers and manufacturers of these dangerous products. Undercover deputies raided 18 convenience stores across the county and arrested numerous store clerks who were selling synthetic marijuana. This operation came months after we sent letters to the store owners

4

warning them that they needed to stop selling these products and we would be following up to ensure that the sales stopped. But what we found is that many stores were hiding the stuff behind the counters and would only sell to people that they believed were not law enforcement officers. Due to our enforcement efforts, a group of 17 retail store owners recently sent the Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office a letter from their attorney promising to cease sales of spice and similar products. Our undercover efforts targeting retail sales of spice followed our crackdown on two Pasco manufacturing locations that were actually creating spice and other synthetic drugs, many of which were not only sold here, but were also shipped out across the country. Our partnership with federal authorities resulted in the arrests of several individuals both in Pasco and in South Dakota. You may have seen a number of billboards across the county highlight-

ing our innovative sticker program. When retail store owners sign a letter and promise not to sell synthetic drugs, they will receive a Sheriff’s Office sticker to place on their door or window signifying that their store is drug-free. This provides consumers an easy way to determine which stores refuse to sell these products and I applaud those retailers who have joined our program. Other law enforcement agencies have since inquired about our program to begin similar sticker programs in their own counties. Your deputies will continue to fight to keep Pasco synthetic drugfree, and I will not tolerate the sales of these poisonous products in our county. Nelson Dentistry in Lutz Receives Program Accreditation Nelson Dentistry in Lutz recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). Nelson Dentistry is directed by Jay Nelson, DMD, and is located at 1928 Highland Oaks Blvd. “The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine congratulates Nel-

NOVEMBER 2012

son Dentistry on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a dental sleep medicine facility,” said Dr. Gail Demko, AADSM president. “Nelson Dentistry is a significant resource to the local sleep medicine community and will provide the highest quality care for patients with sleep-disordered breathing.” To receive three-year accreditation, a dental sleep medicine facility must meet or exceed all standards for professional practice and patient care as designated by the AADSM. Those standards include the continuing education of staff; a developed set of policies and procedures for accepting, treating and billing patients; and adherence to approved standards for safety, customer service and patient follow-up. Dental sleep medicine is a growing segment of dentistry that focuses on managing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy (OAT) – an effective alternative to the standard continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Once a patient is diagnosed with primary snoring or obstructive sleep apnea by a Board-Certified sleep physician, a den-

tist trained in dental sleep medicine can provide treatment with OAT. OAT uses a “mouth guard-like” device worn only during sleep to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. OAT devices prevent the airway from collapsing by either holding the tongue or supporting the jaw in a forward position. The devices are also quiet, portable and easy to care for. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) is a professional membership organization that provides educational resources for dentists and promotes the use of oral appliance therapy for the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing. Alzheimer’s Family Organization Participates in National Candle Lighting Day November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Month and on November 11, the Alzheimer’s Family Organization (AFO) participated in National Candle Lighting day. “It is a good time for us to stop for a minute and consider the impact of the disease

on patients now suffering from Alzheimer’s and the implications for the future,” said AFO Executive Director Dominick De Petrillo. Currently, this terrible disease is affecting more than 5,000,000 people in the United States. It affects 1 in 10 at 65 years of age and 1 in 2 at 85. With the advancing “Baby Boomers,” experts predict that 14 to 16 million people will be affected by the year 2030. Those who are or have been caregivers of an Alzheimer’s disease patient know the tremendous physical, emotional, and financial strain that is involved. AFO is a local organization that offers a number of services and programs to help families dealing with the many responsibilities of care giving for an Alzheimer’s disease or dementia patient. Memory loss is the first indicator that a person may have a problem, possibly the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. It is very important to get a diagnosis early in the disease process. This allows valuable time for the patient and family to make unhurried decisions on medical treatment and address important financial concerns. Frequently, AFO offers free Memory Screenings to anyone who

feels he or she may be experiencing memory loss. For further information about upcoming events please contact AFO’s main office at 727-848-8888 or toll free at 888-496-8004. Sertoma Foundation Builds Awareness for Dementia Related Hearing Loss Today, an estimated five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and increasing evidence shows that unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound. People with dementia have higher rates of hearing loss, yet lower levels of hearing healthcare intervention. And, undiagnosed hearing loss can play a confounding role in the medical evaluation of dementia. However, according to the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation we learn that appropriate use of hearing aids can often improve quality of life for both the individual with Alzheimer’s and the caregiver. “There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says Craig McCart, Executive Director for Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation of Florida. “At

Sertoma, we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face. But in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with hearing loss, including individual’s with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.” A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any medical evaluation prior to the evaluation of dementia. By addressing the hearing loss, an audiologist can move toward a more accurate diagnosis, improve quality-of-life for those who have Alzheimer’s, and help them live as fully as possible. In this same spirit of leadership, the Sertoma Foundation is urging hearing healthcare professionals to join in promoting National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month during November to raise awareness of the importance of addressing hearing loss in both the diagnostic process and to enhance quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Together, Litos and Julie form a combination of confidence, trust and comfort for those who experience their studio. “Anyone can paint a picture, but to make you feel it is a gift,” says Litos. “Forbidden Images is committed to the individual expression of art. Come visit and experience for yourself why it is vital to value art the same way we live life – with passion!” In addition to using the highest quality inks, Litos, JD and Steven are privy to using the best quality products, as Forbidden Images remains at the forefront of leading developments and technology in regards to the tattoo industry. Litos is very adamant about continuing education and attends numerous conventions

throughout the world in order to stay at the very top of his field. In addition to tattooing, Litos also designs custom products with his art on it and has over 200 products available – from coffee mugs and laptop covers to t-shirts and stamps. He also custom-designs paintings and other decorative pieces. You can either request art, which takes you through the same process as when designing a tattoo, or you can purchase art that is already drawn. Litos and Julie are very active in the community and are huge supporters of local businesses. “We have a great relationship with businesses in the local community,” states Litos. “Together we help each other grow as people.” At Forbidden Images Studio, the artists are able to interpret an important part of you and through talent and creativity give life to your deepest emotions and bring to reality a true work of art. Revitalize Your Mind and Your Body at Trinity Yoga By Julie Kanehl The existence of yoga is said to go back more than 3,000 years B.C., and once you know a little bit about it, it’s not hard to know why. Yoga is a unique practice that engages more than your physical body in your workout, but also your mind, and some say that yoga affects their soul, increases their faith and improves every aspect of their lives. Don’t be scared away, because yoga is not a religion, it’s a form of exercise, and an incredible way to get fit, clear your mind, and relieve stress. Regardless of race, sex, creed, religion or color, yoga is a practice that, unlike many other forms of exercise, can be practiced by anyone of any age, and of any physical ability. The truth is, it’s excellent for you! Conveniently located on Old C.R. 54 between Carmelita’s Mexican Restaurant and the Kelly Dance Academy, Trinity Yoga is owned by Anne Bromberg and Christina Lowden who truly love what they do. Together they have created an incredibly popular

18

yoga studio that is welcoming, calming, and a great place to get fit and make friends. Unlike gyms, the feel of Trinity Yoga is completely open and accepting. Whether you have done yoga for years, or have no idea what all the hype is about and want to take your first class – you will fit in beautifully. In its 5th year, Trinity Yoga offers a wide range of yoga styles from Gentle Yoga, which is a perfect class for beginners, to Hot Power Yoga, which is a real calorie burner. There are many different styles of yoga that are taught at Trinity Yoga, but all you have to do is come, bring your mat and your water and do your best! That’s it. No stress, no competition, just practice. There are currently five instructors at Trinity Yoga, and all of them are 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teachers with the Yoga Alliance. Each of the instructors add something unique to the practice, and work hard to make everyone feel welcome, safe and at peace while they practice in the studio.

In addition to yoga, Trinity Yoga also offer Pilates, a 30 Minute Body Blast (which is a workout that is reminiscent of the popular Insanity and P90X training styles), and even tai chi. Whatever your fitness level, focus and goal, you will find a great workout at Trinity Yoga. Christina says, “I do my best to get to know every student, to find out how they feel and to see how they are doing in their practice. I don’t want anyone to be afraid of what yoga is,

and I want to make yoga work for everyone.” Yoga is More Than Pretty Poses First and foremost, yoga is a workout! It is way more than sitting pretty with your legs crossed and your eyes closed. The practice of yoga is very unique in that it can be practiced together, but is done completely independently, so it’s perfectly suited to challenge you regardless of your physical abilities or limitations.

that I like most about yoga is how it grows and changes as life changes. I don’t have to change my practice if I have an injury, or if something is bothering me, like a runner would have to. I can just shift the way that I practice yoga.” Instructor Leslie Lemmon came into yoga from a completely different place. She’d been badly injured in a (L) Christina Lowden & (R) Anne Bromberg car accident and needed surgeries that created painful physical limitations. “I asked Christina fell in love with fitness my doctor what I was allowed to do to when her children were little and she work out, and he said yoga, so I tried took a job at a daycare in a gym. In fact, they’ve had to expand twice since they opened. “People have been so welcoming and it has been great to see so many students practice yoga and make it a part of their lives,” says Christina. Schedules and Classes Trinity Yoga offers a variety of classes every day, in a variety of styles including the previously mentioned Gentle Yoga, as well as Hatha Yoga, which focuses on using proper breathing techniques and standing and sitting positions that align the body to cleanse the body of toxins, strengthen the body and increase muscle strength. Hatha Yoga is what most people think of when they think of yoga. Another popular style of yoga is Yin Yoga, where the body’s position is held for a longer time. Other styles include Vinyasa and Restorative. Power Yoga and Hot Power Yoga and Hot Tai Chi classes are a great way to ramp it up a bit. These highcalorie-burning classes take yoga to another level where the only equipment you need to create the body and mind that you desire is yourself. In Hot classes the temperature in the studio is raised above 90 degrees to help your body release the toxins, and help your body move more fluidly. If you still want to take your fitness to another level, there are the Pilates classes, the 30 Minute Body Blast and many more to choose from. Christina says, “The 30 Minute Body Blast class is very popular. I actually have students who have gone from a size 10 to a size 6!” In addition to regular classes, Trinity Yoga also offers special workshops; in fact Sunday, November 18th, Trinity Yoga is offering a Yin Yoga Workshop with sound. One of Christina’s amazing talents is her love of Acutonics, which is the use of sound to facilitate in healing, focus

The Gentle Yoga class is perfect for those who want to learn yoga and growth among other things, and this workshop will include this practice. Trinity Yoga has a lot of excellent options for students who are interested in taking classes. For a monthly fee that can be auto-debited on the 1st or 15th of each month, students can take any class that they’d like all month long. Another popular option is to purchase class cards. Right now Trinity Yoga is offering a special of $5 off of a 5 class card, and $10 off of a 10 class card. Christina says, “If you’re interested in taking two or more classes a week, the auto debit is the most affordable option.” If you’re not sure you’d like to commit, you can take any class for $15 as a walk-in student, and your very first class at Trinity Yoga is only $5, so what are you waiting for? Perhaps you need a little more incentive? Well, I’ve got it. Trinity Yoga also offers massage therapy! Ahava Massage is located within Trinity Yoga and a massage is a great way to relax, unwind and de-stress. Owner Yani Hovsepian-Knapp says, “Ahava means love.” Yani is coming up on her oneyear anniversary at Trinity Yoga and she will be offering a special to celebrate. Yani is a licensed massage therapist in a number of massage techniques including relaxation massage and therapeutic massage. Trinity Yoga is located at 8514 Old CR 54 in Trinity. There’s a Bike for Everyone at Trinity Cyclery By Julie Kanehl For the folks at Trinity Cyclery, an extension of the popular and locally famous Neptune’s Cyclery in Tarpon Springs, a bicycle is a special thing. Far more than a great way to get around, and more than a great way to exercise, to them a bicycle is personal. Like a car, a person’s bicycle can say a lot about who they are, and in a way have personalities of their own. That’s why they have so much passion for what they do. Whether you take the wheels out for an occasional spin, or you are a hard-core cyclist, Trinity Cyclery has a bike for you. Trinity Cyclery opened just a few short months ago in the Trinity Oaks shopping plaza just west of Tamarind Boulevard and east of Little Road, making it completely convenient for everyone in Trinity. This brand new bike shop is

owned by Eddie Mullally, who in the mid-nineties successfully renovated a 4,000-sq.-ft. building in Tarpon Springs (that most people thought was doomed to be demolished) into, not one, but two successful businesses. Eddie bought the old building at the corner of Tarpon Avenue and Safford Avenue in 1994 and opened Neptune Lounge & Cyclery in 1996. Neptune’s Lounge & Cyclery fits perfectly with the atmosphere in Tarpon Springs, and the community welcomed Eddie and Neptune’s into the fold. For years, Neptune’s has been the destination for anyone who is in need of a bicycle. Conveniently located on The Pinellas Trail, it’s a great place to buy a bike. Well known for their repair business and rental capabilities as well, Neptune’s Cyclery is a part of the fabric of Tarpon Springs. At night when the cyclery closes, Neptune’s Lounge opens next door.

Trinity Cyclery Offers Knowledge & Experience Eddie says, “I’d sold a lot of bikes to people in the Trinity area especially because of the Suncoast Trail being out that way.” Knowing that Trinity could use a great bike shop, Eddie opened Trinity Cyclery, and put a manager in charge who’s extremely knowledgeable about bikes. Tony Steward, Manager at Trinity Cyclery, prides himself on being the go-to guy for anything bike related. Tony says, “A bike inspires everyone a little differently. My job is to find that right bike for everybody and to keep it running.” Trinity Cyclery has a number of popular and high quality brands of bicycles including Giant, Redline, Fuji and Sun, which is a manufacturer of recumbent bicycles. Tony says, “I have a lot of knowledge about bicycles from beach cruisers to racing bikes, so I can help fit you to the right bike.” Choosing a new bicycle can be a

Eddie Mullally, owner of Neptune’s Cyclery and Trinity Cyclery really exciting experience. Tony feels that the most important thing when choosing a new bicycle is being able to test it out first. Trinity Cyclery’s location makes that an easy thing to do, as the Trinity Oaks shopping plaza has a wide-open parking lot where customers can thoroughly test out their bike before they buy them. Tony says,

“After an initial ride, I can calibrate the bike to fit the rider.” Trinity Cyclery offers everything bicycle related included accessories like bicycle helmets, grips, clothes, gloves, horns, bike lights and more. Tony keeps drinks ready in the fridge, and sells Cliff protein bars for riders who might be passing through on Trinity Blvd., and he says, “We are here for the community.” Repair The Bike You Have at Trinity Cyclery Many people don’t go to a bike shop to purchase a bicycle, and instead they find themselves taking a box of parts home from a big box store. Kontos Dental Cares For The Entire Family By Alexis Selby With a gentle touch Emanuel Kontos, DMD, provides patients with exceptional dental care and all the necessary means to maintain sparkling, healthy teeth and a lifetime of beautiful smiles. Located in Tarpon Springs, Kontos Dental has been proudly serving families in the community for the past five years and although a majority of his patients are local, Dr. Kontos draws many patients from all across the Tampa Bay Area, who find that driving a little farther to the dentist is definitely worth the quality care they receive from Dr. Kontos and his caring staff. Dr. Kontos is trustworthy and likeable and provides his patients with honest, fair prices on all their dental work. “I provide high-end dentistry without the high ticket price,” states Dr. Kontos. His love and passion for the art of dentistry started during his early youth and as a young adult he shadowed his family’s dentist around the office, observing his techniques. This love and

passion, coupled with his commitment to excellence, comprehensive knowledge and experience, and honesty and genuine concern for his patients is what makes him such a great dentist! “For many years I have been through too many dentists and most relationships lasted less then a year,” writes patient Loretta Christopoul. “I was looking for a dentist who was compassionate, honest and most of all, very patient with me. Three years ago I became a patient of Dr. Kontos; finally I had found someone who I could trust. I was so moved by his professionalism and his staff that I referred my sister-in-law and husband; who are forever thanking me. If you are looking for a dentist who understands honesty and TLC, I highly recommend Dr. Kontos.” Dr. Kontos attended the University of South Florida, where he achieved his Bachelor’s in Natural Health Science. Upon graduation, he pursued his Dental Doctorate at NOVA Southeastern School of Dental Medicine and graduated in 2007.

After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Kontos returned to his hometown of Tarpon Springs and opened his own practice in 2008 and since then has built a strong reputation for providing topnotch dental care to all of his patients. I have been a patient of Dr. Kontos for quite some time now and have had several different procedures done – from general cleanings to filled cavities – and have always left 100 percent satisfied. Dr. Kontos and his entire staff are committed to providing their patients with personalized, gentle care, and every time I visit their office for an appointment I am happily greeted with a welcoming smile and a warm “hello” and immediately made to feel comfortable and relaxed. Patient Ken Dambrosio writes, “Over the years I have spent many hours in different dental chairs, from NYC to Providence, to Tampa and finally to Tarpon Springs. Here, I have found the most comfortable dental chair to sit in of all those I have visited. Dr. Emanuel Kontos is one of the

most considerate and passionate people I have ever met. He always takes his time and I never feel like I am just another patient. Dr. Kontos’ honesty is so reassuring, thus creating a trusting relationship that I was forever seeking and never finding from other dentists. As patients, we don’t know what the correct dental procedures are – leaving us all at the mercy of our dentist. This is why it is so important to find a dentist that you can truly trust. The reconstruction work that he did for me was extremely intensive that took place over the course of nine months. I spent many hours in Dr. Kontos’ chair, having multiple reconstructive implants. His artistic approach was so perfect and the end result was amazing – I looked as I did 20 years ago! I feel like a kid again, being able to eat, look and smile as I always remembered.” Kontos Dental is located at 1730 S Pinellas Ave, Suites J and K, in Tarpon Springs. With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise

fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the

grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains. The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable

but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.” Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull

and stained. “The tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and recaulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! The 4th Annual Taste of Trinity & Business Expo Was a Huge Success! By Julie Kanehl The 4th Annual Taste of Trinity & Business Expo was held on September 15 at Seven Springs Middle School (SSMS) in Trinity, and it had its best event to date with the highest turnout since the Seven Springs Middle School PTSO began the event in 2009. More than 60 vendors took part in the event, ranging from restaurants to doctor’s offices, and everyone had something tasty to share with the community. SSMS PTSO President and Coordinator Extraordinaire, Diana Jerome, worked tirelessly to gather local business owners and organizations together to showcase a sampling of everything that Trinity has to offer. The outcome culminated into an allaround great time showcasing great food, exciting entertainment and overall, the sense of community that really makes Trinity unique. This great event was only $15 per family (or $5 per person) and it greatly benefited SSMS; the money raised goes into their technology fund. Over 1,000 people came

50

to the event this year and families enjoyed having the opportunity to support their school and their community while seeing friends, visiting their favorite booths, and meeting new people. Taste of J.W. Mitchell High School Jazz Band Trinity 4, which was held from great performances on deck through11 a.m.-3 p.m., showcased entertainout the day. The event was broken up into three kinds of sponsors, ranging from

Platinum to Silver. The Platinum Sponsors were set up inside the cafeteria with tables, displays and enough space to perform demonstrations. Just outside the cafeteria and along SSMS’s beautiful courtyard, the Gold and Silver sponsors displayed their products, shared information, and offered goodies for the entire family to enjoy. It’s not called The Taste of Trinity for Nothin’! It is called The Taste of Trinity,

after all, so every table had something to share, meaning that there were nearly 70 delicious items on the menu that day! The Buffalo Wild Wings table was hopping with a large sampling of their most popular wings, while Panera Bread, Publix, and Sweetbay fed the masses with favorites from their respective delis and bakeries. Westshore Pizza delivered some of their most popular pizzas, and Delizioso Cre-

ations by SG Catering had a line that went on for tables as the word spread about their homemade penne pasta. Two nearby country clubs came to show their support to SSMS, Fox Hollow Golf & Country Club and Seven Springs Golf & Country Club, both of which shared some delicious samples of what guests can expect to enjoy when they dine there. The Coca-Cola trailer was open in the courtyard cooling guests down with all of their favorite Coca-Cola products, and Body by Vi, In2It Nutrition and Fitness and Smoothie King handed out some of their delicious smoothies to customers who stopped by to learn about their nutritional supplements and products. It wouldn’t be a Taste of Trinity event without desserts, right? Right! Sugardarlings Cupcakes, who always has a popular table, hit everyone’s sweet spot by offering spoonfuls of sugar! Spoons filled to the brim with some of their famous cupcake frosting! Yum! If you were in the mood for fondue, Velata Fun Fondue was on hand to showcase their unique warmers and their premier chocolates. Newcomer Baby Cakes and More had a table that was piled high with every kind of sweet imaginable, and they served some of the most amazing brownies that I’ve ever tasted. Meanwhile the Edible Art from the Heart company displayed cookies that were almost too beautiful to eat. Almost! Gathering for a Great Cause There were so many great organizations and companies who came out to support Seven Springs Middle School, and to take part in the Taste of Trinity event. While there may not be room in the entire paper to mention everyone by name, the participants were greatly appreciated by the school. Diana Jerome said, “What a FABULOUS, FABULOUS day! Thank

you so very much to all of our OUTSTANDING vendors, SUPER AWESOME adult and youth volunteers, PHENOMENAL faculty and staff, and the BEST patrons EVER! Over 1,000 TERRIFIC folks came out to share in the day with us. What a blessing you all have been in lending your time and talent to this event!” Another cause very close to Diana Jerome’s heart is the SPCA Suncoast. The SPCA Suncoast is always holding events to raise awareness and funds so that they can help the many animals that they rescue to find their forever homes. The SPCA Suncoast had a couple of pets that were ready for adoption at the Taste of Trinity event, and I have a hunch that they both found what they were looking for. Kids were lined up 5 deep just to have a chance to play with the sweet animals. Shannon McIver was on hand to represent The American Cancer Society (ACS) and Relay for Life. She said, “We had 72 teams participate last year, and we would love to see 100 teams this year!” She passed out booklets about the ACS and raised awareness for the event, which will be held in May of 2013. From pet care by Paw Wash Plus to Braces by Stein, DDS, and VIP Cruise & Travel to The Better Back Store, there was something wonderful for absolutely everyone who came to the 4th annual Taste of Trinity Event. A special thanks goes out to all of the businesses that participated in this successful event and helped to raise money for SSMS, and to the administration of SSMS who opened up their school to our community. If you are interested in participating in next year’s Taste of Trinity, contact Seven Springs Middle School or stay tuned to Neighborhood News & Lifestyles.

“Lokey Motor” Continued from page 1 called Lokey Oldsmobile. He chose a location for his dealership that many found unusual, as it was in an unpopulated area in the middle of an orange grove. Lokey obviously knew what he was doing because Clearwater grew up around him, his family and his dealership. At the time, Lokey Oldsmobile sold everything from cars to airplanes, and in 1966 Lokey was given the special opportunity to become the very first Mercedes Benz dealership in the state of Florida. From there The Lokey Motor Company was born. Lokey had twin sons, Philip and Paul, and both of them have further expanded the family business, which is why many of us are so familiar with the Lokey name today. Philip Lokey owns The Lokey Motor Company, which sells Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz luxury automobiles, and with his staff of 120 employees, Philip Lokey continues the family tradition of creating long-lasting relationships with their customers. Today The Lokey Motor Company is a thriving family business that is “Big Enough to Serve, Small Enough to Care.”

54

The Lokey Difference The Lokey Infiniti dealership and the Mercedes-Benz dealership sit sideby-side just off of U.S. 19 in Clearwater, which makes them a convenient destination for customers all over the Tampa Bay Area. The luxurious showrooms are filled with some of the finest cars on the road, but it’s the people inside the glamorous showroom that sets them apart. They have so many repeat customers at their MercedesBenz dealership, that they created a Wall of Fame at their Mercedes-Benz dealership, where customers can have their names displayed with a plaque for each Mercedes-Benz that they’ve owned. This new display has been extremely popular with their customers, and is a great testament to the loyalty of the Lokey customers all over town. Sales Manager Jon Koch, Jr. said, “At Lokey you’re not just another number. Here you get that personal service. You can buy a car anywhere, but it comes down to who is going to treat you the best.” The testament of a business is often how long people will stay there, and Lokey has many employees that have been there for more than 30 years. The service department is a

great example; in fact, this month the service manager will be passing the torch to his son, who basically grew up at Lokey, helping his dad assist customers while he fell in love with cars the way that so many of us do. The Lokey difference is generations of sales and generations of service. Wrap Up a Car For Christmas! The Winter Event is about to begin at Lokey Infinity and Lokey Mercedes-Benz, and they have beefedup their new car inventory just for the occasion. With more than 500 vehicles onsite to look at, test drive and drool over, Lokey is stocked and ready for

the holiday season, so if you’ve ever wanted to bring home that car with the bow on top, this is the time to do it! Koch says, “We also have a few remaining 2012 vehicles in our inventory.” This is a great time to wrap up an Infiniti or Mercedes-Benz for you and the entire family, and it’s more affordable than you might think. Whether you are looking for a brand new luxury car, or are looking for a premium pre-owned vehicle, Lokey has it. With a large inventory of both new and pre-owned Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz vehicles, they can help

you find the car of your dreams. General Sales Manager Mark Austin says, “We have a dedicated preowned superstore that can fit any budget with a constant inventory of well over 100 vehicles.” Lokey prides itself on being able to match any competitor’s price, and with perks like free car washes, valet service, and events like “Ladies Night” where they offer free manicures to their customers, Lokey shines. Bill Castner’s initial show at Crescent Oaks on Sept. 12 drew a crowd of over 160. “Turnout far exceeded our expectations and made us realize that there is a need for a nice venue to enjoy a special night out with dancing,” says General Manager Jerry Couzynse. “This kind of Dinner and Dance Show may be a first for the East Lake / North Pinellas area.” Guests enter the elegant, 2-story clubhouse atrium of the Crescent Oaks Country Club and are seated starting at 5 p.m. in the stunning Grand Oaks Dining Room where a buffet dinner is served. The $17-22 buffet price includes admission to the Dance, Sing and Swing Party. The live music starts at 6 p.m. and features hits from the 40s, 50s, and 60s up to the 80s. His 30 years of entertainment experience, extraordinary talent, and energy guide guests down memory lane and on to the dance floor. It is legally valid under the advance directive statutes in most states, including Florida.

The document contains five wishes: Wish One lets you choose the person you want to make decisions for you when you can’t make them for yourself. Wish Two is a living will. It helps you put in writing the kind of medical treatment you want or don’t want if you become seriously ill and can’t communicate to anyone. Wishes Three and Four allow you to describe in detail how you want to be treated to maintain dignity. Wish Five gives you a chance to tell others how you want to be remembered. To receive your own copy of Five Wishes, stop by any of Gulfside’s Thrift Shoppes during the month of November and pick up a copy at the cash register. Farmer’s Market Returns to Downtown New Port Richey with a Fresh Twist By Diane Galemmo The Greater New Port Richey Main Street and a team of volunteers are bringing the Fresh Friday Night Farmers’ Market and Art Show back to the downtown New Port Richey area in an attempt to revitalize this historic business district on the banks of the Cotee River. The market will be joining forces with the Progress Energy Art Gallery. The Fresh Friday Night Farmer’s Market and Art Exhibit had its debut on Friday, Oct. 5, on Railroad Square, one block east of Main St. on Nebraska, and at Cavalaire Square located between Nebraska & Missouri Aves. Fresh Friday Night Farmers’ Market and Art will feature fresh Florida produce, homemade breads and other items such as cheeses, soaps, candles, fresh plants and flowers, as well as handcrafted arts and crafts. The event will be held the first Friday of every month in November and December. Beginning in January 2013 the market will be held every Friday through the end of April. “The Market Team decided to increase the event to weekly beginning in January when our local population grows due to the number of winter residents and visitors to our area,” says Beth Fregger, Executive Director for Greater New Port Richey Main Street, who is spearheading the Farmer’s Market team. There will also be demonstrations, gardening tips, and information on sustainability, edible landscaping and much more. The art gallery’s November and December themes will feature a holiday handmade-gift gallery. Visitors to downtown are invited to tour the gallery, stroll the market, visit the quaint shops and eateries and listen to live music throughout historic downtown New Port Richey every first Friday Trinity Area Neighborhood News

beginning at 6 p.m. through the end of the year. The First Friday exhibit has a very strong and loyal following. Many visitors increase the length of their stay in the downtown area by combining the exhibit opening with dinner at one of many restaurants downtown. “We are hoping the addition of the Fresh Friday Farmers’ Market and Art will attract a larger number of visitors to the gallery and the merchants downtown,” says Fregger. “It’s good for us and it’s good for downtown.” The Progress Energy Art Gallery is located at 6231 Grand Boulevard, in the same block as the Richey Suncoast Theatre. If you have any questions about either of these events, please contact Beth Louise Fregger at 727-8428066 or by e-mail at beth@nprmainstreet.com or Nancy Ciesla at 727-848-6500 or by e-mail at nrpgallery@aol.com. You may also visit www.nprmainstreet.com for a description of Greater New Port Richey Main Street monthly events. According to their website: “Throughout Florida there is a growing interest in improving the appearance and economic stability of historic downtown business districts. In many communities, the main street is in a serious state of decline. Effective solutions to the problems of deteriorating building stock, loss of business, and the waning economic strength of downtown are crucial to the survival of the city itself.” For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NeighborhoodNewsFL.com

Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo Miles and Miles of Trails The trail is the most widely used recreational facility – attracting walkers, hikers, joggers, cyclists and inline skaters – and it will be widely enhanced by its planned link through Trinity. Stimulus funds had been awarded in 2009 to fund the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park multi-use connection. Now a new planned link is slated to extend the existing trail along Starkey Blvd. in Trinity south to the existing trails along East Lake and Keystone Rds. in Pinellas. The first phase will be through the Trinity area and later through Holiday. Starkey Park and the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail (which stretches from Tarpon Springs in the north St. Petersburg in the south) high priority status, according to Manny Lajmiri, senior planner for the Pasco County Metropolitan Planing Organization. But the project could be slowed down as officials search for funds to build the trails. A recent meeting was held at Pinellas County’s Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center off Keystone Rd. in the East Lake area Center to hire a consultant. Once a consultant is chosen the alignment study could take several months, Lajmiri estimated. He expects county officials to get the results by mid-2013. Pasco wants to build several trail segments along Mitchell and Trinity Blvds. Additional trails would connect to the existing trails along Starkey Blvd. north of S.R. 54. Pinellas County would further extend its trails along Keystone and East Lake Rds. to tie in with the Pasco additions. Happy trails to you! Call For Income-Tax Volunteers United Way of Pasco County, the IRS and AARP sponsor free income tax assistance for needy wage earners and seniors from mid-January to April 15 each year. Bill Humphrey, who has served as the coordinator for the United Way of Pasco County free taxpreparation program for all of the nine years it has been in existence, tells us

64

that volunteers are needed for their income-tax preparation program. Also needed are tax-site receptionists and call-center reservation takers to work in the program. The coming tax season is part of the United Way’s community outreach to help low and middle income people improve their financial knowledge. Volunteer tax preparers receive tax law and computer training in December and January and develop skills necessary to prepare and file simple tax returns for low-to-moderate income taxpayers. Volunteers can also prepare and electronically file their own returns and returns for family members at no charge and should have good computer skills. Humphrey says, “Since the 2004 tax season, our IRS certified volunteers have prepared over 46,000 tax returns and claimed Earned Income Tax Credits in excess of $7 million for our clients. During that time we have saved our clients an estimated $3.5 million in tax preparation fees they would otherwise have paid. Last year, our ten tax preparation sites filed 7,560 tax returns and returned $1.6 million in Earned Income Tax Credits to our clients, whose average adjusted gross income was about $23 thousand. We did this all with volunteers, many of whom had no prior tax preparation experience prior to joining our program.” Humphrey continues, “We have three tax-preparation sites in East Pasco, and seven in West Pasco in: Hudson, Port Richey, New Port Richey, Elfers, Holiday (2), and Land O’Lakes. In addition to these regular sites, we will have a day at the Heritage Springs Club House in Trinity, several nursing homes and schools and we will do house calls for home-bound individuals, subject to the availability of volunteers.

Our sites operate by appointment, but walk-ins are accommodated if there are openings in the schedule. Appointments can be made beginning January 15, 2013 by calling UW Help Line (Dial 211). Trinity Corporate Center Welcomes Businesses to Their New Home Back in August 2007, it was reported that a Trinity Corporate Center (TCC) was planned on a former airport site in Trinity. The airport closed in 2004 and the site has been vacant since then. The Tampa Bay executive airport was a private airport located on S.R. 54 in Odessa. It was owned and subsequently sold by Dr. James P. Gills (Founder of Trinity and of St. Luke’s Cataract and Laser Institute in Tarpon Springs.) The airport was permanently closed on October 1, 2004, after which the hangars and other buildings were removed from the airpark. At that time, It was reported that a 74acre mixed used development called the Trinity Corporate Center (TCC) would be built on, what is now called the Trinity Corridor, at Trinity Blvd, east of Duck Slough Blvd, and five miles west of the Suncoast Pkwy. Then the economy went south and the project was ditched, but not anymore. Back in August, several dozen people took a planned pit stop along this stretch of road at Corporate Drive. They gathered under a tent and were greeted by commercial real estate developer Joel Traub as he kicked off a groundbreaking ceremony for his latest project: the Trinity Corporate Center, a 21,500-sq.-ft. office building in Trinity and the future West Pasco home for Wells Fargo Advisors, who are expected to move in by May 2013. When Traub began looking into building a new home for Wells Fargo Advisors, the original plan was about half the size of what it turned out to be. Pasco County’s incentive program, which includes a reduction of impact fees, spurred the decision to build more than just the Wells Fargo space. The intent was to stimulate construction specifically in those areas. “It also helps create jobs,” says John Walsh, Pasco Economic Development Council (PEDC) vice president. “In the short term, there are construction NOVEMBER 2012

jobs. Once the building opens, it will mean jobs for people who work for tenant businesses. Their presence also will mean more customers for restaurants and retailers nearby.” In July, Pasco County commissioners voted unanimously to create mobility fees, which are a charge on new development to help pay for roads, sidewalks and bus shelters. Because fees are lower in urban areas than the old transportation impact fees, officials believe the new approach will help concentrate growth in those areas while keeping rural areas less developed. Pasco became one of Florida’s first counties to adopt a mobility fee as a replacement for transportation impact fees. The Wesley Chapel-based PEDC partnered with the county to craft the program and gain the development community’s support to help adopt a fee schedule. That lowers the cost of office, industrial and transit-oriented development along U.S. 19 and the State Road 54 and 56 corridors. The lower mobility fees were also a part of the incentive package to lure a planned expansion of Raymond James Financial to Wesley Chapel. Wells Fargo Advisors will occupy about 8,100 sq. ft. of the building. The remaining 13,400 sq. ft. will be mixed use available for rent or sale as individual units. With its proximity to the Medical Center of Trinity and other health care facilities, Traub anticipates most of the tenants will be medical businesses. Negotiations already are under way with two medical groups, according to Traub. “The medical tenants should bring a lot of traffic, and Wells Fargo certainly will,” he says. In every sense, Traub expects the Trinity Corporate Center to be a high-profile addition to the area.
