From The Editor Alexis Selby

Happy Thanksgiving from Neighborhood News & Lifestyles As the holidays quickly approach, bringing along with them a whirlwind of festivities and celebrations, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving from all of us here at the Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. From our dedicated advertisers to our loyal readers, it is you we have to thank for our continued success and growth over the past few years. It is all of us working together that keeps our community strong – from our local business owners to all the other hardworking employees and entrepreneurs that call this area home. To so many, Thanksgiving is not just about getting together and celebrating with family and friends over a delicious meal of turkey, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie, but also signifies a time to reflect on the past year and give thanks for the many blessings in their lives – including the joy-

ous opportunity to be united for such an occasion. This Thanksgiving I would like to take the opportunity to say how grateful I am to be part of such an extraordinary community! The past few years I have been writing for the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles I have had the chance to meet so many amazing local business owners and they have really left a lasting impression! They are some of the most dedicated, honest, hardworking people I have ever met, who, no matter how busy, will still find time and money to support local school programs, athletics programs and many other great charities. It has been a real pleasure getting to know the people in this community and I look forward to many great years to come! The Neighborhood News & Lifestyles team would also like to thank you, all of our readers, for your continued support over the past few

years. We wish you a prosperous and bountiful Thanksgiving and many happy years to come! This Thanksgiving, millions of people across the country will come together with their closest friends and family. Wherever you may be and however you may celebrate, I encourage you to think about the many things in your life that you have to be thankful for and take a moment to show gratitude and appreciation. As Henri J.M. Nouwen once said, “Gratitude goes beyond the ‘mine’ and ‘thine’ and claims the truth that all of life is a pure gift. In the past I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.”

needs and requirements and reduce your overall expense. And, more importantly, they go the extra mile to ensure legal compliance. As you well know, much has changed in the insurance landscape over the past year and a tremendous

need has arisen, especially for the independent consumer, to have a knowledgeable and helping hand with the daunting task of wading through the plethora of forms within the new online Health Insurance Marketplace. Very shortly, on No-

vember 15th, Open Enrollment begins. Michael Matthews and Lee Judy both know the ropes and with their unique “architectural approach” at Triton Care, they are available to assist you with their collective forty+ years of experience. Between the two of them, they have an impressive resume, having run insurance companies, having built networks, and having held a senior leadership position within a major insurance carrier. Triton Care specifically understands what it takes to satisfy the requirements of large clients as well; their largest engagement having focused on the health care needs of well over four thousand members. To be honest, I didn’t, but did you know that most businesses in Tampa are run with fewer than twenty employees? Triton Care is particularly poised to assist those smaller businesses in developing the best possible approach to ensure compliance with ever-changing health insurance regulations, while being especially cognizant of their clients’ bottom line. To be sure, Triton Care is a full-service Insurance Agency, offering a one-stop shop for cost-effective coverage in Health (both individual and group), Workman’s Compensation, General Liabil-

ity and Life and Disability, as well as Commercial insurance offerings. Understandably, everyone in today’s automated world is increasingly concerned with privacy and securing their personal information. That is what is especially significant about working with the Triton Care professionals, who most often, will enroll their clients over the phone, thereby reducing the volume of private data exchange over the Internet. Then, each conversation is assigned a unique record number to provide continuity throughout the engagement. Typically, they can accomplish your individual enrollment within a day’s time and a small business’ requirements can be accommodated within a week. As ever, privacy as well as advocacy are the definitive watch words, all incorporated with a personal touch that will leave you feeling confident and satisfied that you have obtained the best possible coverage available on the market. In their current North Dale Mabry office for about a year now, Michael and Lee have been working together since 2006, truly giving back to their community by having been designated as Insurance Specialists with some local charities. As a trusted resource, they have had the opportu-

nity to facilitate discussions as well as enrollment activities on several occasions for the charity membership. “The personal touch is often what is missed in the Enrollment Process. That is where Triton Care excels, taking the approach that service is personal and unique to each individual,” noted Michael. “We want everyone to understand that we’re here to help make the process more user-friendly,” added Lee, knowing that Triton Care has helped many of its clients to alleviate their anxiety regarding pre-existing conditions, out-of-pocket expenses, and other similarly valid concerns. Need to navigate your way through the rocky shoals of the constantly changing insurance world? As is typified by the triton in their logo (that light that steadily beams from a lighthouse), consider letting Triton Care be your personal beacon to help you find safe harbor. Triton Care is located at 13902 North Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 217 in Tampa. For more information or to set up a confidential interview please call (813) 699-3211 x101 or x102 or email Lee Judy at LJudy@TritonCare.com or Michael Matthews at MMatthews@TritonCare.com.

The Friendship Singers – Bringing Joy Through Love of Singing

By Marcy Sanford

The Friendship Singers entertain at Assisted Living Facilities and senior care centers in Pasco and Hillsborough Counties, bringing joy through song.

12

NOVEMBER 2014

For nearly 20 years The Friendship Singers have been entertaining groups at senior citizen and assisted living homes throughout Hillsborough and Pasco County. This December they’ll be celebrating their 20th anniversary and founder Delores Gast is thrilled with the way the group has grown since its beginning. “Twenty years ago I was retiring from my job of 22 years as a church choir director. Several choir members came up to me after I’d retired and said they wanted

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

to keep singing with me. After talking it over, we decided that there was a need for a choir group to sing to people at senior citizen and assisted living homes. Our first concert was at Shady Palms Retirement Home in December of 1994.” Since that first concert The Friendship Singers have grown from 12 members to more than 40 and they’ve entertained thousands of people. “We perform twice a month,” says Delores. “The most wonderful part of being in The Friendship Singers is to see the happy faces of the residents

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

during our performances. Many of them don’t have visitors on a regular basis and it is nice to be able to entertain them and bring some joy into their lives.” Delores says that the group is open to anyone who is interested in singing, “our youngest member is a high school student and our oldest is 92 years old. We have people who live all over the area from Dade City to Carrollwood, Odessa to Wesley Chapel. In addition to the joy we get from performing for nursing home residents, we have all become like family to each other. It is a wonderful group of people.” Friendship Singers member Joe Berling agrees that the group is a wonderful way to volunteer and meet

other people. “My wife and I were looking for volunteer work when we came across information about the group. I had been in my high school glee club and we both enjoyed singing. It is wonderful to see the happiness that we bring to residents. Usually we sing songs from the 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s - songs that will be familiar to the residents of the home. We also try to take a stuffed animal or other gift to give to every resident. It is a great way to volunteer while doing something you love.” The only requirement for becoming one of The Friendship Singers is a love of singing. The group practices twice a month at the Land O’ Lakes Senior Citizens Center and typically performs twice a month at homes and centers throughout Hillsborough and Pasco County. For more information on becoming a member, please contact Joe Berling at 813-997-1454 or jberling@tampabay.rr.com or Joyce Ruby at 813-468-3095, or email joyceruby99@yahoo.com.

Luxury Feline Hotel at Kitty City By Matt Selby Cindy Flowers founded Kitty City over twenty years ago after a personal experience of not being able to find a place to board her two cats while on vacation. Technically it’s not that there wasn’t a place, there just wasn’t a place that provided the level of care Cindy would want for her kitties. Cindy loves her cats, and like most of us, sees her cats as family. When Cindy returned home from her vacation she made the decision to leave her job as a dental hygienist and start her very own catsonly boarding facility right here in Carrollwood, which she refers to as a “hotel” for cats. Her small business was an instant hit in the community and quickly became well known as “THE” kitty hotel. Now, over twenty years later, Cindy’s business still gives her the same joy as day one and her passion for what she does shines through in everything she does. “I really love what I do and my love and excitement hasn’t faded in the least bit,” says Cindy. Kitty City is more than a boarding facility; it’s almost like a day spa

18

NOVEMBER 2014

for cats and CATS ONLY. No other animals have or ever will be boarded at kitty city so your kitty will feel comfortable. While the owner is away, the cats at Kitty City experience one-onone attention with Cindy’s friendly and loving staff, as well as fur brushing, ear cleaning, nail trimming, cat nip and a plethora of treats all at no extra charge! “Every cat is different so each day is tailored to what the cats wants and needs are. Older cats enjoy sleeping longer than younger ones so

we do everything to make the stay at our facility comfortable for each cat. We don’t make them do anything they don’t want to do; and cats are pretty good at telling you what they want,” explains Cindy. When the cats aren’t out for playtime, they are kept in custombuilt, large-sized “kitty condos” that have beds, comfortable hand-crocheted blankets and baby-sized tables to play and jump on. Dividers can even be opened to accommodate kitty siblings. While the enclosures are large, we all know that cats like to hide in small places, so the beds are usually placed under the little tables with a towel hanging over for the kitties to hide under. With over 44 condos and the ability to accommodate over 80 cats, safety is of the utmost importance. The facility is equipped with a state of the art 24-hour security system and hurricane resistant windows, and absolutely everything is cleaned and sanitized every day with hospital-approved chemicals that aren’t harmful to cats. In addition, the doors of the

facility are always locked and nobody gets in or out without all the kitty residents being accounted for. Due to the top notch attention to detail and care, Kitty City is even a top choice among local veterinarians, including Dr. Mango at All About Amore Cat Hospital. Carrollwood Cat owners can rest assured knowing that their feline family will be pampered by the friendly staff at Kitty City as if they were their own cats. Cindy says, “I created Kitty City with the feline lover in mind, providing cat owners a place where they can feel 100% confident that their cats will be cared for in a comfortable, homey environment.” For more information, visit www.kitycitytampa.com or call 813.264.0820. Kat Skratch Burlesque is a Labor of (Luna) Love By Deborah Bostock-Kelley It’s an expression of art as unique as the performer – a combination of dance and old-fashioned tease. In an age of constant body-shaming, Kat Skratch Burlesque rejoices in curves, is proud of their normal, imperfect, non-stick-thin, voluptuous bodies, costumed in sexy boas, lacedup corsets, fishnets, and stilettos. And the sold-out, captivated audience during Bitchin’ Burlesque in September , a fundraiser for and at Tampa Pitcher Show, 14416 N Dale Mabry Highway, seemed to appreciate these “real,” beautiful women. Their themed Bitchin’ Burlesque show was described on their Facebook page as “the burlesque and variety show that celebrates the power, independence, allure, and insanity of what it means to be a woman.” “We greatly appreciate this fundraiser. It was a tremendous success. We had to turn people away at the door. Bitchin Burlesque raised over $2,000 to help us offset the huge cost in going digital,” said Tampa Pitcher Show owner Wayne Valenti, “We do shows like this, improv, com-

edy open mic, and others to help keep our doors open. Despite affordable prices and state-of-the-art digital technology, movie attendance isn’t what it used to be.” The women of this amateur troop have careers and families and some cannot have their faces photographed during their act. Despite this burlesque being strictly the art of a risqué tease and not being stripping down nude, a stigma is still attached to the artists who choose this profession or hobby. Most have backgrounds in dance, jazz, ballet and gymnastics. But all have discovered a common bond through the art of the tease – a confidence in themselves and their bodies they didn’t have prior to joining the troop. Kat Skratch Burlesque is comprised of several fabulous women, who come and go as their circumstances change. For sake of privacy, the current six go by inventive stage names to mask their real identities: Luna Love, Autumn Storm, Gypsy James, Ginger Slaps, Moxy Ann Mayhem, and Roxy Embers. The amateur troupe was founded

by Luna Love, a member of the professional troupe, Le Teaze. Luna fell in love with burlesque during her time living in Queens, New York and decided to introduce her friends to the idea when she moved down to Tampa. “We were actually having a "pampering day" together in early 2010, when it dawned on me that we could all explore burlesque together... just for kicks. I mentioned it and showed the girls some YouTube videos, as very few of them had any idea of what burlesque actually was,” explained Luna. “They loved the idea, so we all decided we'd start having practices on a weekly basis; although, initially, we had NO intention to ever perform for anyone but us.” After intensive practices, the group decided they did want to experience performing in front of a live audience. “We decided to do a little

"teaser" show, just to briefly showcase all of us and show off one of our group routines. In December 2010, we performed at a small bar in Riverview, and packed out the place. We were a total hit and got our first taste of performance! If we weren't hooked before, we were certainly hooked after that first show,” she said. With the success of that performance, the group chose to be a charity performance troupe, making nothing from the performance and donating all

proceeds to their selected organization. “Burlesque changes you - I know it has changed me. I think I've become a more confident person, confident in my abilities to choreograph a song, for example. And the most fun thing about performing, for me personally, is the rush that I get before, during and after I perform - it's a big jumble of anticipation and happiness,” said Ginger. Love added, “Without man-bash-

ing (we love men!), this show celebrates everything it means to be a woman... her grace, beauty, sexuality, kindness, strength, independence... and even a bit of insanity! Brainstorming for routine/song ideas for this show was so much fun, as there are endless possibilities that fit this theme!” Although some may criticize that burlesque is belittling to women, for this troop, it is a form of female empowerment, a way to accept, make peace with, and be comfortable and confident in one’s own skin. “In KSB, we focus on aspects of theater, including facial expressions, and in the art of teasing and building anticipation, not in stripping,” said Slaps. What initially was meant to be a fun girl get-together has evolved into a personal journey for each of Kat Skratch Burlesque members. “It was empowering! Through burlesque, we could be whoever we wanted to be. We learned to appreciate ourselves a bit more and to celebrate our shortcomings instead of

hiding behind them,” said Love. To do a performance like this requires commitment – weekly practices and more leading up to a show. It also takes a creativity and craftiness. Members often sew their own costumes. “Unfortunately, you can't just go down to the corner burlesque store and buy a polka dot bustle skirt of a pair of tiger-striped pasties whenever you need them, so you have to learn how to make costumes yourself,” said Love. She warned that although it looks glamourous on the surface, there was a lot of hard work that went into each performance. Additionally, the time and cost invested in the costumes, music, choreography, hair, and makeup made burlesque an expensive hobby. “I would say that everyone isn't aware of what goes on behind the scenes - the long practices, the dress rehearsal, making props, sewing costumes, searching 5 thrift stores in one day just to find that perfect jacket to compliment your solo performance, making song lists, picking the order of the performances, timing costume changes in between songs, making flyers, handing out flyers around town.....and the list goes on,” said

Slaps. But no matter the time or monetary investment, this group of women are hooked on the power of burlesque. “We said goodbye to the unrealistic notion that "sexy" is the super skinny girl in the movies and TV. We stopped being ashamed of our bodies and came to realize that a heaping dose of personality can be far sexier than any airbrushed model in a fashion magazine.” And these changes in the way we felt about ourselves while we were our "burlesque selves" eventually started manifesting into our personal lives as well. We each had developed a new sense of self-confidence and a renewed appetite for living, and we made changes in our "real" lives accordingly,” explained Love. Burlesque is acting without words. Burlesque is loud and larger than life. Burlesque is theater, drama, comedy, and circus. Burlesque is the ART of the tease... Burlesque is not just about the destination, it's about the journey! Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not

only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The

tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! “Moffitt” Continued from page 1 nerve. Physicians discovered a mass in Garber’s lung and diagnosed the wife and mother with stage III lung cancer. “Cancer definitely robs you of ever feeling like you’re 100 percent okay,” Garber says. “But there’s also the gift within that of realizing how important the present is.” Garber turned to the doctors, nurses and support staff at Moffitt Cancer Center for treatment. Located in Tampa, Moffitt is the only National Cancer Institute –designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida. Moffitt is also one of the topranked cancer hospitals in the Southeast, according to U.S. News & World Report. Their multispecialty team works together to help patients and families find the right diagnosis, treatment and support – all in one place. Garber knows this first hand. The cancerous Pancoast tumor was precariously positioned in her lung near her spine, which made surgery hazardous. A team of experts at Moffitt decided on a personalized treatment plan for Tiffany that involved surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. “When I

met my team of oncologists, I knew I was going to be ok,” she said. Lary A. Robinson, MD, Garber’s thoracic surgeon, teamed up with a Moffitt neurosurgeon, Dr. Frank Vrionis, to perform the removal. “If I didn’t have the support of other Moffitt’s physicians, I wouldn’t have been able to offer surgery like that,” Robinson says. “Perhaps the most important factor that patients can bring to their cancer treatment is a positive attitude. Ms. Garber exemplified this trait with an amazing outlook and an extraordinary focus on being cured. She’s the “poster child” for positive attitude…and I’m certain treatment success and long life are her rewards.” Tiffany is currently living in Sarasota with her family and enjoys sharing her new outlook on life. Moffitt’s experienced team, personal commitment, and quality of care give every patient the support and resources necessary to beat cancer. Garber has been cancer free since December 2013. The center, a national innovator in patient care, is transforming outcomes and offering quality of life. “Moffitt is saving lives,” Garber says. “And it’s not just my life - my children are going to have their mother.”

Tiffany is currently living in Sarasota with her family and enjoys sharing her new outlook on life.

Early detection of lung cancer saves life Dr. Robison states that “an often overlooked fact by the public and many healthcare professionals is that lung cancer strikes a large number of life-long never smokers and minimal smokers, commonly early in life…particularly women like Ms. Garber. Of the 221,200 new lung cancer cases this year in the U.S., 21,000 nonsmoking women will get lung cancer.” Based on national recommenda-

I don’t just care just for their medical needs, but for their emotional and spiritual needs also. All my staff reflects this model of caring for people too.” Often described as a “one-stop shop,” Cromer explains that one of the benefits of being board certified in Family Practice is that he is trained in nearly every facet of medicine. “There is such a variety of things that I do,” he says. “There is something new behind every door.”

That’s one of the many things that have fueled our growth and what are patients are accustomed to – being seen when they need to be seen.” That is why over 25,000 patients, including third and fourth generations of families, choose Northwest Family Medical Center – because they know Dr. Cromer and his staff genuinely care about their well-being.

He specializes in being able to help detox people on an out-patient basis. Since 1991, Dr. Cromer has proudly served as the medical director of Town & Country Hospital’s In-Patient Alcohol and Drug Recovery Unit, only leaving this position in June 2014. And even beyond these services offered at Northwest Family Medical Center and Premier Image, Dr. Cromer is the principal investigator and medical director for Tampa Clinical Research, founded in 2002, which is housed in the same private building complex and also owned by his wife, Carol, who has a master’s degree in education and pharmacology. All of his PA’s work on my clinical trials. We are truly connected and it’s wonderful.” Dr. Cromer summarizes his overall experience of being part of the multifaceted, multi-procedural practice: “God has blessed me with the ability to portray my love to people and people respond to that. expressed their appreciation for the large canine presence at the worship service. The church Handbell and Chimes Choir performed as long lines of animals and owners wound through the church, on their way to receive blessings and their St. Francis medals. “We blessed all manner of dogs,” said Father Andrew Heyes. “There were several cats and kittens, two snakes, a goose, a cinnamon brown hamster, a baby bearded dragon, and a snail. Then, outside, we had the horses.” The horses, Ink Pad and Sparkle, came from Rosanna’s Paint Farm in Dade City, bringing joy and laughter to those who opted for horseback rides. Cheers, waves, and fist pumps emanated from first time riders, who experienced the thrill of sitting astride these beautiful animals. Ink Pad and Sparkle also joined the Pets and Kids Parade, which traversed the church grounds. Father Andrew and his Doberman, Winston, led the parade; Winston proudly displayed his participation ribbon for the remainder of the afternoon.
