2nd Annual Old Florida Food and Folk Festival Cee Bees Citrus in Odessa announces the 2nd Annual Old Florida Food and Folk Festival taking place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Nov. 21st. The festival highlights the cultural legacy of Old Florida with a day of food, art, music, historical presentations, documentary screenings and family fun. The event is free, but donations will be collected for The Boy Scouts Camp Brorein, located next door to Cee Bee’s Citrus. “At Cee Bee’s Citrus we are big believers in the cultural history of Florida,” said Marketing Manager Drew Burchenal. “And last year’s fantastic turnout shows we are not alone! Last year’s festival was a great success, with over 1000 festival visitors enjoying a day of music, food and culture. This year will see a return of some favorites as well as exciting new additions. We'll have grove tours, fresh local BBQ, kids’ activities, cooking demos, and lots of great entertainment. It’s sure to be a fun-filled day for the whole family.” Florida Artists: Mary Ann Carroll, the only female artist of The Highwaymen, an African-American artist group who sold their paintings along the Florida Roadways from the 1950s through the ‘80s. Dorene Butler, and accomplished artist herself and the daughter of Robert Butler, who was a member of The Highwaymen. Florida Musicians Performing: Amy and Gary Hendrickson – Amy Hendrickson is a fiery songwriter out of St. Augustine. Gary is a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and producer. Gary recently released his album, Hendrickson, Signs of Life. This will be the father-daughter duo’s first public performance together. Michael Jordan’s music is unique combining alternate tunings with tapping techniques and percussion on the body of the guitar, creating sounds that defy the formal approach of playing the acoustic. form it into their own blend of upbeat drunken, beer snobbery, moonshine drinkin’, biscuit eating entertainment. They have been referred to as a Jug Band & also a “Live example of late night campfire fun.” Florida Entertainment: “Local Honey” Documentary Screening – Dreamed up in the spring of 2014, Eric Hood (director) and Amy Hendrickson (producer) created a visual and audio snapshot of St. Augustine’s diverse and talented working musicians, while celebrating the collective musical history. Rick Smith, son of Patrick Smith, who authored the beloved Florida novel A Land Remembered, will present “Patrick Smith’s Florida is A Land Remembered,” a multimedia presentation. “A Time Remembered” – Gina Sauber brings the 19th century to life, teaching children how things were “back in the day” with a historical presentation and the use of old time wares along with old time children's toys and games. The presentation also includes hunting techniques and a wonderful display of hides and bones. Learn About The Florida Wildlife Corridor Mission: The Florida Wildlife Corridor mission is to connect, protect, and restore corridors of conserved lands and waters essential for the survival of Florida’s diverse wildlife. They’ve documented that a statewide corridor still exists in Florida, and advocate for its permanent protection. Their expeditions have been chronicled in magazines, books and now a brand new documentary “The Forgotten Coast: A Return to Wild Florida.” Author and expedition participant Mallory Dimmitt will host a screening of this beautiful new film and answer questions after. About Cee Bees Citrus: Cee Bees Citrus is a family-owned grove in Odessa specializing in heirloom citrus varieties. Three generations of the Burchenal family work side-by-side with a dedicated staff to bring a taste of Old Florida to the area. They have

recently expanded their crop selection, planting blueberries, grapes, pomegranates, peaches and fresh vegetables. “Citrus greening has killed millions of the trees and any sort of cure looks to be years away,” Burchenal said. “That’s why we decided to diversify. This year we’ve expanded our vegetable garden threefold and continue to explore new crops. This festival is a way to give something back to the customers who have supported us, and introduce ourselves to neighbors we haven’t met yet. People may be shocked to know there is a 300-acre farm growing fresh citrus and produce just 15 minutes from downtown Tampa. This year we will be starting a new Community Supported Agriculture program, also known as a CSA. Think of it as a “produce-of-the-month,” where you pay a small monthly subscriptions and receive the freshest produce we grow in return. We will be taking signups at the festival this year!” For additional information and/or directions, please log on to www.oldfloridafest.com.

Massage: When Maggie talked her sister Mercy into becoming certified in massage therapy three years ago, Mercy did not realize how much she would enjoy the healing powers of massage therapy, or that it was something she had been training for her entire life. Mercy, who has been legally blind birth, said, “I’ve been practicing my whole life to be a therapist. I’ve always used my hands to discover the world. They are my way of seeing. Being a massage therapist has been very rewarding. One of my areas of specialty is neck issues. I’ve had many clients come to me who say they’ve tried everything to get rid of neck pain but have not had any relief. It is great to be able to help their pain go away. Many of my clients have found they can even stop taking pain medication. Massage is so wonderful because it helps people and doesn’t

3D Solar Educates Community on Solar Energy and Tax Breaks Katie Thomas 3D Solar is Florida’s premier solar installer and outsourcing partner for solar domestic hot water systems (SDW) and Photovoltaic systems (PV). Owner David Ringo opened 3D Solar in the Odessa area over two years ago with a mission to not only design solar systems for homeowners, but also to bring awareness to the area about solar energy and how it can work for the individual homeowner. David says, “Before beginning 3D Solar I worked for a couple different solar companies, but I wanted to be in a business that focused more on customer service, education and quality product, rather than hard sales. I started 3D solar to help people make informed, educated decisions on solar installation. We educate on the benefits of the return of solar as a whole, how systems work and why it is one of the best investments as a homeowner you can make. Since our team’s goal is to educate the consumer about solar energy, rather than just make a sale, we are able to really focus on teaching people about the benefits of solar, which in my opinion, are endless.” Meeting with David and his team

16

to discuss the benefits of solar energy, I wondered aloud why more people haven’t chosen to install solar. The guys explained to me that there is a big education gap when it comes to solar power and how it works, which is why they take the time to really talk to homeowners and explain the many benefits of solar energy. David says, “If people ran their homes like you would run a business, everyone would have solar, because it is an investment that not only saves them money in the long haul, but it increases the home’s value, offers tax breaks, and to my knowledge there is no better return on investment.” Going solar makes sense when you consider that you are spending money anyway for energy – money that is just gone with your electric bill – but the money you put into solar energy is an investment that will eventually pay for itself enabling you to harness your own energy from the sun. With Florida being the Sunshine State, we have one of the biggest solar production potentials in the country and having a net-zero home has never been as easily obtained or coveted as it is right now. 3D Solar is licensed and insured to install and

design solar systems throughout Florida and has grown to be known as one of the top solar companies for businesses to buy from over the past couple years. Although 3D Solar has grown their business through selling their product to other installers and businesses, the company also is focused on helping residential communities get set up with solar energy products. 3D Solar has a few different options for residential homeowners, including: Solar Electric Generation,

NOVEMBER 2015

Solar Hot Water Heaters and Solar Pool Heating. Solar Electric Generation helps enables homeowners to generate their own electricity by utilizing residential photovoltaic (PV) systems or “solar panels” on the home. PV systems are designed to supply accessible and usable solar power by means of photovoltaics. Basically, a PV system converts the sun’s radiation into energy you can use as a power source through a grid-tied

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

system. This means your home creates its own energy and saves that energy to be credited towards your future energy use. Let’s say your home is using the PV system to generate electricity – even when you’re not home using power, that energy goes back into the grid and is credited to your energy usage. So if your home is creating this energy, your meter will turn backwards to give you credit, eventually leading to a build up of free energy that is sourced from nothing else but the sun. It’s a new and exciting time for advances in energy use right now and by installing solar photovoltaic panels, you are able to take the money you would be paying a utility company and invest it back into your home’s solar system, which not only provides cheaper monthly bills for you, it increases the value of your home and helps you reach a point where you no longer have to be reliant on expendable (and expensive) fossil fuels that are not clean for the environment. In addition to PV systems, 3D Solar installs solar hot water heaters, which is one of the most efficient solar systems for a residential property, along with solar pool heating. Even if you choose to install a PV

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

system, solar hot water heaters are a great addition for a better return on investment. Meeting with David and his team to discuss the benefits of solar energy, I wondered aloud why more people haven’t chosen to install solar. The guys explained to me that there is a big education gap when it comes to solar power and how it works, which is why they take the time to really talk to homeowners and explain the many benefits of solar energy. David says, “If people ran their homes like you would run a business, everyone would have solar, because it is an investment that not only saves them money in the long haul, but it increases the home’s value, offers tax breaks, and to my knowledge there is no better return on investment.” Going solar makes sense when you consider that you are spending money anyway for energy – money that is just gone with your electric bill – but the money you put into solar energy is an investment that will eventually pay for itself to enabling you to harness your own energy from the sun. Solar is for Everyone The majority of the world’s energy is generated from fossil fuels including coal, oil and natural gas. Traditionally, fossil fuels have been

the go-to source of energy production, but growing environmental concerns, rising prices and the overuse of expendable resources has more and more people looking into renewable energy. Solar, as opposed to fossil fuels, has unlimited potential and has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing renewable sources of electricity. Solar power is appealing to homeowners and potential homebuyers for good reason. It offers clean, infinitely renewable energy captured from the sun and converted to usable energy that heats and cools your home without tapping into non-renewable resources like oil, gas and coal. The Time to Install Solar is Right Now! The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) ends on December 31st 2016, which means homeowners have just over a year to receive a 30 percent federal tax credit for solar system installation for residential homes. The

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 • www.NNLFlorida.com

ITC has helped solar installation grow by more than 1,600 percent since it was implemented in 2006 and has ensured that solar companies have helped create lower costs of installation for the consumer. If you want to produce your own energy using solar power, the time to act is now, so you can receive a solar-for-dollar reduction on your income taxes that you would otherwise pay the federal government. After the tax incentive ends on Dec. 31, 2016, the credit ends unless Congress extends the deadline. The 3D Solar team is ready to show you how solar energy products can benefit you. They can show you how solar works to power your home and saves you money in real-time. The facts are clear and the time is now. Solar is the future. It is energy that pays for itself.
