Great names we remember from the past, like Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Kurt Weill, Jerry Bock, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim – as well as contemporary artists like Steven Schwartz and Jonathan Larson – have been instrumental in Broadway’s growth and history. Congregation Kol Ami in Tampa will celebrate such Jewish contributions to the American Musical Theater with “A Jewish Night on Broadway” on Saturday evening, November 19, 2016. Jewish artists have played a pivotal role in the creation of musicals and development of Broadway. It is hard to imagine Broadway without their achievements. Even Monty Python’s Eric Idle acknowledged in his own award-winning musical Spamalot, “You won’t succeed on Broadway if you don’t have any Jews.” The gala will showcase live performances from some of the greatest Tony-nominated and award winning Broadway musicals. Salon Metro – Where Artistry Meets Precision for Life Changing Style Change! By Kim Thomas If you are looking for an upscale home salon – one where friendly professionalism meets precise artistry in hair color and design – then make an appointment at Salon Metro, located on Tampa Road in Oldsmar. Under new ownership for nearly a year, Salon Metro continues to gain notice with new clients, and the growing team is receiving wonderful reviews. European born, and a Londontrained Master of Vidal Sassoon, Salon Metro owner Michelle Tonking is very sure of her artistry, and her experience has earned her the right to be unapologetically proud. Michelle has had the phenomenal experience of presenting a model with her design to

the late Vidal Sassoon himself. In fact, Michelle achieved Regional Finalist for the Wella Trend Vision Competition in London for three consecutive years, which is no small feat when you consider there are less than 20 stylists chosen out of thousands of entrants. An artist and entrepreneur, Michelle opened her first salon at the young age of 24 and owned two successful salons in the UK. She shares, “My first salon was Bauhaus in Exeter City. I turned from urban to rural when I opened Sketch in Budleigh Salterton.” Michelle enjoyed those years, adding, “I became and listened to my true artist inside as I had Nature with me for my inspiration.” Now in Tampa Bay, Michelle has taken the technical skill and knowledge she gained during her years

of training under London Masters at Vidal Sassoon (becoming a Master herself), and has mentored her handpicked team. By sharing her experiences and vast knowledge, Michelle avails to her team an education beyond what is provided at even the very best schools. As a result, Salon Metro’s clients enjoy a worldclass experience. Michelle doesn’t just copy the latest precision cuts, she designs cuts that others copy. She expounds, “I’ve studied geometry, and I look at the disconnections and all the angles when I am creating a design. I am an artist who has trained in my discipline for more than 20 years.” Her past includes many experiences that others can only dream of achieving, and many – such as the opportunity to work under the direction of Vidal Sassoon himself – that will never come again. Reminiscing of her years

training at Vidal Sassoon, Michelle says, “It was such a fabulous opportunity to be so creative. It is a great experience mixing with other artists.” Michelle also went to LA to do a fabulous photo shoot with Sebastian, where she created a calendar for the company. She adds, “It was amazing to work with such professional models.” Michelle is truly an artist and upon meeting her and sitting in her chair, you realize she is studying your features, finding the most pleasant points of reference and creating in her head a hair design that doesn’t just flatter, but rather defines your best features. “I don’t just look at the shape of a person’s face, but also their neck, the width of their shoulders and their body proportion.” The lines of a Sassoon haircut are like arrows pointing out your best features. Michelle compares designing a

Salon Metro owner Michelle Tonking with the late Vidal Sassoon precision cut with having a custommade designer suit or dress, yet it can make you look younger immediately, costs less than a designer suit, and you will wear it every day! “The right hairstyle is the cheapest facelift you will ever get,” says Michelle. “The right cut and color can make you look 10 years younger. Clients tell us all the time that we’ve changed their lives by giving them a completely new style.” The day I was in the salon, a man who is a new client left Michelle a voicemail literally stating, “Thank you! You have changed my life!” Men are often not sure where they should go when they want services that the corner barbershop doesn’t offer, and Salon Metro is an excellent choice for

professional men who value precision haircuts and color that looks natural. Salon Metro offers a full selection of services. The salon can accommodate wedding parties and offers the latest in up-do styling for all special occasions. Salon Metro is the home salon for those who desire artistry, precision and professionalism. Optimal Living Clinic’s Goal is to Find Root Cause of Health Issues By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Trypanophobia effects nearly 10 percent of the population. The idea of a needle, even a small one, piercing the skin is enough to make some avoid a helpful natural alternative treatment to allergies, chronic pain, inflammation and other health issues. Eastern Medicine and Acupuncture Physician Sam Cheever wants to change the perception of acupuncture. She is often asked if acupuncture is similar to a blood draw. The response is a resounding no. The only similarity is the name needle. “They are thin, sterile, one-time use needles about the size of a human hair – virtually painless – nothing like the needles used for a blood or vaccinations,” she explained. Located in Oldsmar and recognized as 2016 Opencare’s Patient Choice Winner – one of the top acupuncture practices in Tampa,

10

NOVEMBER 2016

Optimal Living Clinic is located at 13950 W. Hillsborough Avenue and is by appointment only Monday through Friday- 10am-5pm.

Optimal Living Clinic takes the whole person into consideration. An initial visit covers health concerns, medical history, and healthcare goals. A patient used to a Western Medicine doctor rushing out of one consult to the next will be pleasantly surprised by the time

and attention Sam gives. In conjunction with repairing the root cause of health issues holistically through acupuncture and nutritional counseling, certified through the Department of Health after an intensive 60-hour course,

Sam has added injection therapy that aid in health, pain relief, weight loss and lack of energy to her patient treatment options. A relationship is formed long before Sam will introduce the program that includes options like B12 for mood, energy and fatigue, Traumeel and Zeel for

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

In the photos above, Sam is testing for B12 deficiency. She had none. If she had, drops would have been instantly absorbed into skin. pain, and Lipo-Plex and Be-Thin Spray for weight loss. “This is not something where you want to come by the clinic and say ‘I just want to try the weight loss injection and Bee Thin Spray’ and do one mil every week. That’s a Westernized reductionist way of doing

healthcare,” she said. “We offer a holistic way of doing healthcare.” Despite the low likelihood of being allergic, every patient who chooses to add injectables to their patient care is tested with a minute injection of the product in the patient’s arm before beginning a

regular treatment. “We wait about 15-20 minutes to make sure that we’re not going to have an allergic reaction. It is very, very rare that someone would have a reaction to B12, but these are medicinals so we just want to be absolutely safe.” Oftentimes, patients turn to Eastern Medicine when all other options have failed, when other doctors have said surgery is the “only” solution to pain management or the doctors are left shaking their heads at the enigma that sits before them with no idea how to help. Natural homeopathic medicinals allow for a viable safe option for a patient. As an example, deficiencies of B12 cause anemia and neurological impairments. B12 injections are readily absorbed by the body as compared to oral vitamins which are partially destroyed by the digestive tract resulting in reduced efficacy. B12 can increase energy, prevent fatigue, promote mental alertness and improve overall stamina for everyday activities. Lipo-Plex can increase metabolism to help burn calories and stimulate proper utilization of fats and carbohydrates in the body, supporting the efficient transfer of fats and toxins from the liver. Traumeel and Zeel serve as an anti-inflammatory, analgesics to combat long-term pain. In addition to healing through Eastern Medicine, Sam provides an affordable $77 hair analysis test. The analysis can determine mineral and nutrient imbalances that can cause chronic auto-immune conditions, depression, muscle cramping, weight problems, arthritis, high blood pressure, cognitive impairment, among others. It also can determine elevated levels of toxic metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and aluminum.

“The results are about you – your biochemistry and what to do about it,” said Sam. “I’m not going to start a patient on B12 until I’ve got these issues taken care of. They go on a program for about 4 months, start feeling better in about 2 weeks, and then we retest to see how we did. “Injection therapy along with acupuncture and proper nutritional can help unblock the obstruction within your body, which in turn can eliminate pain and restore balance and harmony, as well as aid in the body’s ability to heal itself. My objective is to make my patients feel better and live better.” Optimal Living Clinic is located at 13950 W. Hillsborough Avenue and is by appointment only Monday through Friday- 10am5pm. Sam is featuring a special 10% saving of her weight loss program – 8 weekly visits, consultative or can include weight loss acupuncture, 2 bottles of BeThin Spray, and weekly injections of Lipo-Plex with B12 for just $700. TOP PROSPECTS IN THE TAMPA BAY RAYS SYSTEM By Bethany Cohen For avid baseball fans, watching the youngest and newest talent in the sport is invigorating. Fresh faces, new outlooks to an American pastime that that has been passed down for generations and for some teams a new hope that this will be “the year”. The Tampa Bay Rays have grown many young prospects throughout the years and although some of them are no longer with the team, their presence can still be felt in their fan base. After a disappointing 2016 season, the Rays now look to 2017 and the promise of the future. Highly touted pitcher Blake Snell made his Major League debut just a few months ago and next year at this time, fans may just be talking about one of the names below. Topping the Rays’ prospect list is shortstop Willy Adames. The 21 year old spent the 2016 season with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits, hitting .274 with 11 homers and 57 RBIs. Although the Biscuits’ playoff run was cut short, Adames showed a lot of potential for the future with a

12

NOVEMBER 2016

solid season both offensively and defensively. Adames was named both a Southern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star rosters. The shortstop was originally signed with the Detroit Tigers in March 2014 while playing in his native Dominican Republic. At the 2014 trade deadline, Adames was sent to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a three team trade that sent him and Drew Smyly to Tampa Bay, David Price to the Tigers and Austin Jackson to the Seattle Mariners. Adames’ 2016 campaign was definitely an improvement over the 2015 season while playing with the Class-A Advanced Charlotte StoneCrabs and recording just a .258 batting average with four homeruns. Next on the list is right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell. At 21 years old, Honeywell completed his third season of pro ball in the Rays’ organization. Honeywell was drafted in the 2014 MLB Draft with a compensational pick while playing at Walters State Community College. He started 2014 with the Charlotte Stone Crabs where he was 4-1 in 10 starts

with a 2.41 ERA/0.96 WHIP, while striking out an impressive 64 batters in 56 innings. Following his July promotion to Double-A Montgomery, Honeywell continued with the work he had started in Charlotte with a 3-2 record in 10

starts and a slightly lower ERA at 2.28; in all he had 117 strikeouts in 115.1 innings pitched in 2016. This fall Brent Honeywell was selected to represent the Rays’ organization in the Arizona Fall League as part of the Peoria Javelinas.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Another member of the Montgomery Biscuits’ squad, Jake Bauers comes in at number three in the Rays’ top five. Known mostly for his work at first base, he spent the 2016 season in the outfield making him an even more versatile prospect. The 20 year old continues to build on his power at the plate hitting a solid .274 in 2016 with 14 homers, 28 doubles and 78 RBIs. Bauers was named both a 2016 Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star in the Southern League and earned “Player of the Week” honors in the beginning of July. He also spent last off-season with the Arizona Fall League where he was named to the AFL Rising Stars’ Team. Originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the seventh round of the 2013 MLB Draft, Bauers was traded alongside Rene Rivera and Burch Smith to the Rays in exchange for Wil Myers and three other players in December 2014. The Rays most recent first-round pick Joshua Lowe, makes his debut on the prospect list at number four. At just 18 years old, Lowe was the Rays first round draft pick in 2016. After signing with the club this past June, he reported to the Gulf Coast Rays of

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

the rookie league and was then promoted to the Princeton Rays at the beginning of the July. In 28 games with the GCL Rays, he hit .258 with two homers and 15 RBIs and then upon his promotion, hit .238 with three homers and 11 RBIs. Right-hander Jacob Faria rounds out the top five list and his performance this season shows that although his record (5-10) wasn’t exactly what some may have hoped, it was his command and strike zone dominance that shows his potential. The 23 year old spent the entire 2016 season with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits and then with the Triple-A Durham Bulls since late June. The righty struck out an impressive 157 strikeouts in 27 starts for a total of 151 innings pitched. Faria was drafted in the 10th round of the 2011 MLB Draft while playing at Gahr High School. With the off-season now upon us fans can look forward to tracking their favorite minor leaguers in various fall and winter leagues and into Spring Training 2017. Of course, free agency is still awaiting and there maybe even more twists and turns ahead for the Rays.

The euthanasia rate for pit bulls is 1 in 600 and nearly 1/4 of the dogs in shelters are purebred.
