Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, “Shoeless Joe,” Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio––Take me out to the ballgame! In 2010, we wrote a story about a local resident who had turned an entire wing of his home into an amazing shrine to baseball, sports and celebrity memorabilia. When we first met Dennis “The Menace” Schrader, and his lovely wife Mary (who is quite possibly the bigger baseball fan), they gave us a private tour of Schrader’s Little Cooperstown, which at the time was a collection of 4,000 autographed baseballs, beautifully displayed and protected in a 12’ x 14’ bedroom in their home that had been renovated into a vault so secure, that it was reminiscent of James Bond or Mission

Impossible. Offering private tours to people of all ages who heard about his collection, Dennis said, “The beautiful thing about this collection is sharing it,” of course, at that time, it meant giving tours into his own home, sometimes two or three times a day! Calling it a collection isn’t quite the right word. This Largo High School Hall of Famer (for basketball) owns the largest privately owned autographed baseball collection in the entire world. His collection’s popularity has gone worldwide, earned a coveted Guinness Book of World Records Certificate, and found a new home at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, where Schrader’s Little Cooperstown is on loan for the next twenty years. Celebrate the Holidays with Whole Foods Market Carrollwood As you continue your journey through the holidays, you’re probably starting to plan for Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s get togethers. Much like Thanksgiving, these are difficult events to execute while maintaining a healthy approach. But it is possible, so stick with me to learn some simple ways to keep your weight down during the most indulgent season of the year. First and foremost, find time to exercise. This is the number one activity I find that people cut out. I’ve heard every single excuse in the book, but what it all comes down to is this: your health is worth 30 to 60 minutes a day. The American Heart Association recommends 30 or more minutes of medium intensity activity at least five days a week -- and remember, something is always better than nothing. Second, don’t eat just because there’s food. Hand in hand with this is the idea of eating until you are satisfied, not overstuffed. There are a lot of numbers thrown around when people give advice on how long it takes for your stomach and brain to register

6

about how full you are, but just remember that there is a lag. Eat slowly, eat with purpose and remember to listen closely for your body’s signals. Whole foods with healthy fats can help fill you up and keep you satied like no others. Remember, the lethargy that comes with overconsumption plays directly into my first point, so don’t over eat and then go sit on the couch! Third, offer healthy options for snacking -- and more importantly, opt not to have the other stuff. One of the most common mistakes party hosts make is to offer healthy options, like veggie platters, mixed fruit salads or pick-your-toppings salad bar, but they also have a bowl of chips, some sour cream and onion dip or a platter of chicken wings. Rise above the desire to offer these items and stick with (the often less expensive) healthier treats. If you don’t have the bad stuff around, then you simply cannot eat it. Lastly, do not skip meals to make up for poor eating choices. This is one of the things I hear other people advocating and it makes my heart sink. Often times with the focus on calorie counting comes a desire to skip meals

in order to “make up for” overeating at other times of the day. Unfortunately your digestive system does not tell time like your brain. Skipping meals does very little in the way of making up the caloric difference, but it is harmful the next time you sit down to eat (and are positively ravished) and makes it exceptionally hard to control your intake. If you have a “bad meal” don’t take your next meal time off, instead choose some nutrient

East-West Animal Hospital is Your Other Family Doctor By Marcy Sanford Everyone at East-West Animal Hospital is focused on creating a serene, caring environment for pets and their owners. The clean reception area has ample room for your furry friends to have their personal space. Soothing background music adds to the relaxing atmosphere and you can enjoy a delicious cup of gourmet coffee or take advantage of the free wi-fi while your animal is receiving treatment. East-West Animal Hospital has an examination room specifically for cats and other small animals set up to accommodate their needs, and one for dogs that is sure to keep them comfortable. There’s even an elevator table in the dog room and a fold-out futon in the acupuncture and laser therapy room for large dogs who may have a difficult time getting up on a table or need extra room to stretch out. Located in the Tropical Village shopping plaza at 1524 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard in Lutz (next door to the Breakfast Nook), East-West Animal Hospital is a full service, state-ofthe-art integrative Veterinary facility. Dr. Linda Register and her staff offer general soft tissue surgery, in-house blood tests and diagnostics, wellness exams, vaccinations, comprehensive oral health exams including extractions and cleanings, and digital x-rays in a clean, comfortable environment. In addition to traditional veterinary services, East-West Animal Hospital offers wellness packages, which can save you hundreds of dollars, as well as Eastern alternative medical care such as acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and laser therapy that can bring great relief to

10

Dr. Linda Register welcomes you to bring your furry family members to East-West Animal Hospital for excellent care arthritic animals or help improve the quality of life for a sick animal. Dr. Register became interested in Eastern medicine when herbal medicine cured her cat’s cancer. After that experience, she knew she wanted to be able to offer the same help to her beloved clients and became certified in Chinese Veterinary Medicine through the Chi Institute of Traditional Veterinary Medicine. She is one of only a few veterinarians in the area who have this certification. “Acupuncture can be very successful for dogs and cats who are experiencing pain and have not responded to medicine. It can also be useful in helping scar tissue heal, controlling seizures, increasing appetite, and improving an animal’s strength. We are the only practice in the area that has fully integrated veterinary acupuncture into our animal care.” Treatment plans are tailored to the individual animal and their health issues. Dr. Register offers laser therapy, acupuncture, supplements and herbs as part of her arsenal of treatment therapies for her patients. Herbs can

be used to improve their immunity and wellbeing. Herbs can supplement an animal’s diet and fortify its constitution. “We determine the best treatment for any animal after a thorough physical and discussion with the owner. Many people want to minimize the medications their animals are taking or the medication is not effective. I incorporate different modalities into the care of our animals so we can find a treatment plan that works best for them and their owners.” East-West Animal Hospital’s pet wellness plans benefit both pets and their owners. These plans provide discounted preventive veterinary services, saving you money on your pet’s routine health care. Depending on the plan you choose you could save hundreds of dollars a year. East-West Animal Hospital offers plans for puppies and kittens, adult dogs and cats, and senior pets. Your pet’s plan might include all preventative medications including flea, tick, and heartworm, vaccinations, unlimited visits with the nurse, up to four doctor visits a year,

and all medical exams and blood work. “Not only are the plans a great value,” says Dr. Register. “But when you focus on your pet’s preventive health care, it is better for the pet and for your family in the long run.” Dr. Register and her staff have made sure every detail of the hospital contributes to their patients’ comfort and health, and their owners’ peace of mind. Whether your pet is a 100pound dog, a finicky feline, or a tiny gerbil, they will feel at ease at EastWest Animal Hospital. And you’ll feel great knowing they are getting superior care from loving, knowledgeable veterinary experts. From ferrets to bunnies and chinchillas to hamsters, Dr. Register sees all types of animals with fur at EastWest Animal Hospital. She’s even had an opossum patient who had the good fortune to go home with one of the hospital’s former employees and now sleeps in a bed and eats pizza, yogurt, and quesadillas – making all his opossum relatives just a little bit jealous.

Suncoast Arts Fest Brings Fine Art to Wesley Chapel By Dara Tucker The Suncoast Arts Fest at The Shops at Wiregrass keeps getting better with each passing year. For the past eight years, the Suncoast Arts Fest (SAF) has brought together quality artists and art lovers from Pasco, Hillsborough, and Pinellas Counties. It takes place in the heart of the Tampa Bay area, convenient to major interstates, at the Shops at Wiregrass on January 18 and 19, 2014. The show is held at the peak of the tourist season in Tampa Bay and traveling artists are encouraged to combine this show with other state shows in warm, sunny Florida. The Suncoast Arts Fest is a great way to spend the weekend, with up to 130 juried visual artists and craftsman lining up along the main street in Wiregrass, and musical entertainment is set up in the Center Court. There is also an interactive art area, the fresh works of emerging youth artists on display, and chalk artists showcase their work on the sidewalks – all taking place dur-

With the ample parking, restaurants and shops, The Shoppes at Wiregrass is a beautiful setting for an outdoor arts festivity. Pam Marron and Marj Golub are the event’s co-chairs. They know that by creating a quality fine arts show they are continuing to increase the awareness of the arts in Pasco

County, which has become the driving force of the Fine Arts of the Suncoast, Inc. The primary goal is to pass the benefits and appreciation of all arts on to local youth. “Each year the funds raised from this event go toward helping the advancement of services for visual and performing art needs of kids in Pasco County Schools, both public and pri-

the Ringling College of Art and Design for Portfolio Day, where national arts colleges review works of aspiring art students in a variety of creative fields. Previously SAF funds were used to promote elementary school art where there have been cuts due to lack of funding in Pasco County. “Our goal is to raise money for scholarships. We’ve built a website that serves as a streamlined resource for youth striving to pursue a career in the arts fields,” explains Pam Marron. WJQB 106.3 FM has joined the event to promote arts across Pasco County. An Interactive Arts Area promotes visual art for children by exposing them to hands-on art activities. Sand art is an example of one of the activities available for the children to create. Select tenth through twelfth graders from Pasco County schools will also have their art displayed in the Emerging Artist Area. In addition to the fine arts show in Wesley Chapel at The Shops at Wiregrass, other organizations such as Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art in Tarpon Springs, Pasco Arts Council, The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, PHCC Alric Pottberg Gallery at the

Port Richey campus, Pioneer Florida Museum, the Main Street Art Gallery in downtown New Port Richey and the West Pasco Art Guild, are partner organizations that offer a variety of additional arts options. The Suncoast Arts Fest promotes cultural awareness in Pasco County, Florida and benefits “Arts for Kids,” a supplemental arts education funding program for area schools. All proceeds benefit “Arts for Kids” by way of a grant created by the parent nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization known as the Fine Arts of the Suncoast, Inc. Proceeds from this show and other related SAF activities supplement arts education funding in Pasco County’s public, private and charter schools. Come out to The Shoppes at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel to enjoy fine art in a beautiful, central location, while supporting a great cause. He’s Making Dreams Come True There’s no doubt that there are a vast number of Real Estate agents in the Tampa Bay area, but one thing is for sure, Nick Acosta, licensed Realtor with Lipply Real Estate, and a resident of Tampa for over 20 years, is making a difference in helping people that want to buy a home and in helping owners that want to sell their home. What makes Nick so special? Maybe it’s his professionalism. Maybe it is his honesty and integrity. Possibly it’s his negotiating and communication skills. Or maybe it’s just that he refuses to give up until he knows that he has provided his customer with unparalleled service in exceeding their expectations. Bottom line - he is changing lives and making dreams come true in the Tampa Bay area of real estate. Professionalism “My husband and I recently purchased a home in the Tampa area with the help of Nick Acosta,” writes Rhonda Winter, regarding the experience she and her husband Mike had. “We live in New England and

18

had been looking at properties in the Tampa area through Lipply’s website. We emailed Lipply about traveling to Florida to look at some of the properties and got an immediate response from Nick. Right away, we started receiving listings for homes that met our criteria on a daily basis. When we were ready, Nick arranged for three whole days of viewings, allowing us to see as many homes as possible while we were in town. With Nick’s hard work and preparation we were able to find our dream home during that visit! Nick expertly guided us from negotiating the purchase price and all the way through the closing. He provided honest and informed feedback throughout the whole process and responded quickly to all of our questions and concerns, from early morning to late at night. He never failed to get back to us about anything we asked, no matter how trivial. Even after the sale, Nick took time out of his busy schedule to personally show us around the area. Nick is extremely

knowledgeable and professional, yet, made us feel like family. We feel extremely fortunate to have met Nick and to have had his guidance and expertise available to us. We would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a home in the Tampa area. He is an excellent ambassador of Florida and the Tampa area in particular. Our expectations were exceeded in every way! He went above and beyond what we ever expected from a real estate agent.” Linda Nelson wrote, “Thank you Nick for your diligence. We found a house in one day! I appreciate the quick and trustworthy responses you provided throughout my search and purchase. It was a holiday weekend and your anniversary, yet you were so kind to know that I had just a few days in town and you made available. I appreciate the great attitude and assurance you offered when I requested to take “just one more look” at my final purchase. Being on opposite coasts and different time zones did not get in the way of your timeliness, which is why I will recom-

Nick Acosta, Realtor Lipply Real Estate mend you to any friends and family in the future! Thank you kindly for your knowledge and professionalism.” Hank Varrichio and Lana Brooks also were extremely happy with their experience with Nick Acosta, saying, “We recently moved from New York to Safety Harbor, Florida, and needed an agent to help us find a home for our family. We worked

with Nick Acosta, and he made a stressful situation bearable. There was a lot of communication, and when we came down for a week to house-shop, Nick had everything all lined up for us, and spent the entire day with us looking at least a dozen homes. He was very interested in the needs of our family, and what we required in a house. Actually, we liked more than one but made our decision and we are very happy. We love our new home and the schools and neighborhood are wonderful. Nick really knew what we were looking for and nailed

it! We felt like he was a family friend, not just an agent, and would recommend him to anyone who is in need of a house in the Tampa/Clearwater area.” Honesty and Integrity “Nick I want to thank you on behalf of my whole family, for all your help in finding our new home,” says Mary Stalzer. “When we first came to Lipply Real Estate and met with you, we knew it was a tall order to sell two homes and find one that would accommodate my husband and me along with my parents. Not

only did we get an offer on my house within the first month, but we managed to close on both sales - at target price! - AND find the perfect home to share, all inside three months. The timing was perfect, and we are so happy in our lovely new place. God bless you and your family. We will be forever grateful.” Mike and Beth McDermott recommend Nick Acosta, “We found Nick as he was the listing agent on a home we wandered in during an open house. He came across knowledgeable and ethical so we didn’t pursue a buyer’s agent. It was [because of] the ease of him getting us through the purchase of our new home that we chose him to list our existing house. That too went flawlessly. It sold the first day. I would, and have since, recommend Nick to represent anyone looking to sell or purchase a home.” Negotiator “Our experience with Nick has been nothing but positive,” says Eileen d Segundo Armas. “My husband and I recently had the wonderful experience of buying and selling a home all within 30 days with the assistance of Nicholas Acosta. Our friends and family were shocked with how fast this was done especially during this difficult real estate market. I credit Nick tremendously for his hard work and expertise in accomplishing both the buy and sale for us. He negotiated aggressively on our behalf for the purchase of our new home beyond our expectations and was able to get a purchase price that was acceptable to us. On the sale side, we were impressed with the time and effort he made in marketing our home in the best possible light and brought us expeditiously through to a sale that was just about full listing price. Nick takes the time to understand what his clients’ needs and wishes are, and he does whatever he can to assure that they are happy. We have already recommended friends to him.” Loretta Miller says, “Nick Acosta was our Realtor when we purchased our home in May 2013. We were house hunting with very specific criteria. Nick made sure to meet that criteria with every house he showed us. He listened carefully as my husband and I discussed each home we viewed. He quickly knew exactly what we were looking for and was able to share the positives and

negatives about the homes he was showing us. His insights gave us an unbiased perspective on a house. Nick’s forte was communication. He replied in a timely manner. We received many midnight e-mails! Nick shared every detail of the negotiations with us. He was aggressive in his approach and he was successful as we are delighted with our new home.” Nick possesses each of the above-mentioned characteristics and many others as well. The fact that he is a former Vice President with over 20 years in the banking industry allows him to effectively negotiate for the buyer or the seller, respectively. Nick’s background in the banking industry gives him the knowledge to facilitate his customers in understanding what lenders are looking for in order to get pre-approved for a mortgage loan. Nick is there from start to finish and ensures that what is to many an overwhelming process becomes a wonderful experience. His years of experience in developing customer relations enable him to work comfortably with everyone he meets. Nick is also fluent in Spanish and this has allowed him to expand his customer base as well. Nick is a results-driven professional whose work ethics, negotiation skills and commitment drives him to ensure that his clients’ high expectation comes to fruition by getting the job done timely and in an efficient manner. He will work tirelessly and relentlessly in partnering with you in buying your new home or in selling your current home and his work ethics is evident as Nick has been the top-producing agent at Lipply over the last two years! To summarize Nick Acosta in one final customer quote: “There is no one like him,” says Mida and Javier Rogriguez. “We recommend him strongly and I don’t have any doubt to call him again in my next purchase. Thanks Nick. Hugs to you.” Lipply Real Estate’s office is located in Clearwater and Robert E. Lipply is the Broker / Owner. Lipply Real Estate has over 20 licensed Real Estate agents that cover the entire Tampa Bay area. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: REALITIES By Dr. Wayne Adams, Former Dean and Full Professor of a Graduate School of Business About now, parents throughout Florida are waking up to some hard realties about the SAT and ACT Examinations. As correctly predicted in the Tampa Bay Times article last April, the dramatic increases in the minimum qualifying SAT and ACT scores for these scholarships are eliminating 50% - 75% of students for 2014 who would have been eligible if they had graduated in 2013. Most of the damage has been done in the Florida Medallion Scholars level, where the minimum eligibility thresholds have been increased on the SAT from 1070 to 1170, and on the ACT from 22 to 26. The new requirements for the Florida Medallion Scholars on the SAT increased from 1270 to 1280, and on the ACT from 28 to 29. For the past three years, the reality is that Florida students have continually ranked around 45th in the key category of student performance on the SAT and ACT compared to

20

other states. Our school programs are clearly not working to improve scores against this national standard, which cannot be influenced by local or state politics. Yet these scores continue to be vital for college admissions and scholarships. The positive reality is that our students can dramatically improve their SAT and ACT scores with focused, concentrated help. Improvement is like helping a student climb as high as possible on the part of their educational iceburg that towers out of the water. Learning strategies, specific test taking techniques, and working with my proprietary study guides consistently help students climb as high as they can. I cannot help broaden or deepen their academic foundation which it the eightninths under water. But I do help them do their best with where they are. My students normally improve 200 – 300 points on their combined

When any parent looks at the “before and after” essays, they are amazed. These students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, University of Chicago, Boston College, USC, UCLA, LSU, Berkley School of Music, UF, USF, UCF, Stetson, U Miami, New College of Florida, and many other outstanding colleges and universities. Many have received academic, athletic, and music scholarships. For seniors, increasing your score for Bright Futures and getting across the threshhold of SAT or ACT levels for your desired college can still be accomplished. For Juniors and Sophomores, there is no better

time to start preparing because practice and knowing what to do can greatly improve your scores, plus you can “cherry pick” your best score from different examinations, submit them, and colleges do not know they came from multiple examinations. Since these exams are graded on a curve, often students can score higher in the Winter and Spring when the number and quality of those taking the exams are lower. If you would like to talk more about how I can help your student, please contact me at 727253-0639 or wwa0811@gmail.com. Help Put Money Back in the Hands of Hardworking Pasco Residents! The United Way of Pasco County Prosperity Campaign helps residents in our community by providing a muchneeded tax return preparation service that’s completely free, individualized and has no strings attached, and we need your help! This valuable, volunteer-driven program exists as a partnership between the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, AARP Foundation’s TaxAide, United Way of Pasco County, and local financial institutions and business partners. For many Pasco residents, receiving their tax refund can mean the difference between deciding to buy groceries or keep the lights on. Since 2004, the IRS-Certified Prosperity Campaign volunteers have prepared income tax returns for thousands of low-to-moderate income residents at no cost and last year alone this resulted in more than $1.5 million saved on paid returns! In addition, the program volunteers emphasize vital tax credits that are regularly overlooked, such as unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Care and Elderly Tax Credits, and go unclaimed every year. There are several different volunteer roles to choose from, and the good news is that you don’t have to be a math whiz and no experience is necessary. Volunteers receive full, comprehensive IRS training and become certified to prepare simple returns. Other rewarding volunteer opportunities include Greeters, Site Volunteer

Schedulers, and Technology/Computer Set-Up Assistance at the various sites. Full descriptions of these volunteer positions can be found on the United Way of Pasco County website, http://unitedwaypasco.org or at the Virtual Volunteer Resource Center, www.uwvolunteers.org. The time commitment is minimal, but the satisfaction and personal reward is great! Taxpayers tell us year after year about the difference the free service makes in their lives. People like Robin, a single mother, who shared that she and her children wait until February to celebrate Christmas when they get their return because she, “needs every penny of the [tax] refund.” In 2013, volunteers filed more than 7,700 returns bringing more than $8 million in refunds to local Pasco residents and more than $1.8 million in EITC refunds alone! The average income of the taxpayers was just $24,694, which means that the EITC and other tax credits, combined with the free tax return preparation service, make a meaningful impact in the households of thousands of residents. Fish Company – Inspired by Faith and the Desire to Help Orphans Globally By Lenay Ruhl Some people write out proposals, researching and developing complex plans before starting a business. For the ladies of Fish Company it was simple; their faith was the foundation that inspired their business. Fish Co. is based on the story in the Bible of Jesus feeding the 5,000. As the story goes, Jesus was preaching to the masses. They had been listening to him speak all day and they were hungry. The disciples searched for food to feed them, but all it took was the offering of a small boy who had only five tiny loaves of bread and two fish for Jesus to create a miracle. As the disciples divided the food into baskets to distribute to the people, they were surprised when this small boy’s offerings provided enough food to feed the multitudes with plenty to spare. Fish Co. uses the model of this miracle as their guiding principle, believing that God will take what fish they have to offer, multiply them and use those fish to change the lives of or-

phans in need. They’ve exchanged loaves for handmade dolls and fish for purses, and their “crowds” are the more than 153,000,000 orphans around the world. Fish Co. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing homes for orphans throughout the world through the creation, sales and exchange of products using donated goods and materials. Fish Co.’s mission is both global and local. They are a local ministry, whose mission translates to a global change. Globally they are building orphanages and sending their dolls to comfort orphan children. Locally they are empowering and encouraging people of all ages to offer their gifts and skills to make a difference. All the items that Fish Co. has to offer are individually made and hand sewn using 100 percent donated materials. Those items are then sold and 100 percent of the proceeds are used to change the lives of orphans. Currently Fish Co. is partnered with ICM, International Cooperating Ministries,

The durable and roomy Samaki bags come in a variety of fabrics, which you can view online at fishcompany.org Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti and Uganda.” Fish Co. originated from the hearts of women who felt a need to make a difference in this world. In 2011 Julie Miller, Fish Co. Co-President traveled to Tanzania, where she experienced firsthand the plight of the more than 2,000,000 orphans in that small country. That trip served as the spark to ignite the passion each of these ladies felt to both use their creative talents and change the lives of children in need.

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

“It’s been amazing to see God at work,” said Julie, “after only a few months of ministry we are well on our way to meeting our first goal of raising funds to build an orphanage in Uganda.” Part of what makes Fish Co. special is that it is run entirely by volunteers. They do everything from cutting and sewing fabric to sweeping floors and sending ‘Thank You’ cards. Volunteer Kirsten Murawski said, “We’re always looking for donations, and more help.” Another thing that

makes Fish Co. special is that it is a family venture. Cindy and Julie are sisters and Dottie is their mom. Their husbands and children even get involved. “It really is a special thing, we have our family working together and friends frequently dropping by to lend a hand and bring donations,” added Julie. For them, this all goes back to the bible story of Jesus with the loaves of bread and fish; everyone gives what they can. As Kirsten put it, none of their wishes have gone unanswered, and they are continually finding people who are donating the things they need, including everything from thread to the flooring under their feet. Creating their bags and babies in their workshop, they have an open door policy for those who would like to come by and be a part of their ministry. They are currently selling their

bags on facebook and their website www.fishcompany.org. They also frequently make appearances at craft shows and other events. The ladies of Fish Co. have a beautiful story to tell and want to share that story with the world. “What we believe God can do with this is what drives us,” said Mary. The ladies laugh together, dreaming of Fish Co. expanding to other cities. They have shameless idealism and can imagine a world where every child has a home; where people from all over bring their own “fish” to the table, joining efforts in raising money to better the lives of orphans. To get involved with Fish Co. by volunteering, purchasing items, or making a donation, visit their facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/FishCoTampa and their website at www.fishcompany.org.

“Weight Loss” Continued from page 1 The experienced physicians at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss work with each client to determine whether or not Vitamin B12, a mulitvitamin and/or appetite suppressants will be included in their program. Dr. Duic states that he always enjoys his first encounter with new clients: “I learn about their hopes and goals, their lifestyle and possible health issues. All of this sheds light on how I can assist that individual, both with diet design, lifestyle modification and, if they choose, vitamins and/or an appetite suppressant. I am confident new clients are starting on a journey from which I have seen countless patients derive great fulfillment.” While each program is unique to each patient, the program revolves around creating a safe and healthy approach to losing weight for each patient, beginning with a low calorie diet and a new understanding of the way that the foods that you eat affect your body. Once the weight starts coming off, usually at a rate of 1–3 pounds per week, patients really get

motivated. They can see the fat just melting off, and while they look better, they also feel better. It’s not a one-sizefits-all diet, which is why it’s better. Taking the time to understand each patient’s unique goals, the professionals at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss customize the program for optimal results. Additionally, patients have the option to spend one-on-one time with Susan D. Opyoke, RDLD. Susan is a Registered Dietician who is Board Certified and completely committed to each of her patients. Susan has helped hundreds of people since Suncoast Urgent Care (formerly named Trinity Urgent Care) and Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss opened their doors to the community 6 1/2 years ago. Susan says, “One of the aspects of Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss that differentiates us from other programs is that, if a patient chooses to work with me, it is a complimentary part of the program. I meet with clients either in person or on the phone, by appointment, and I am also available by email. I work with clients to create a personalized diet and we review the aspects of healthy eating. While most people know what is and what isn’t healthy, many

people fall into a rut. They forget to plan their meals, and they go through fast food lines when eating on the go and not taking any time for themselves. With our program, we Susan Opyoke, work together and RDLD discuss how healthier eating can actually work even though our lives are busy. We also work on what to eat and what not to eat in a way that will still allow you to go to parties and live your life.” Susan adds, “For the clients who choose to utilize me, I really like to see them weekly at the beginning, and when they see the weight coming off consistently, the accountability makes sense to them. It’s very fast. What makes us unique and different from other programs is that not only are my services a free component, we also offer a maintenance program completely free. This gives us the opportunity to help you maintain your weight loss, - which for some can be the hardest part.” With each visit, in addition to look-

ing at how much weight has been lost, clients can expect a health check, an evaluation of their tolerance to any vitamins or suppressants they may be taking, as well as an optional visit with a physician and/or the dietitian. Susan says, “The majority of the patients who come in see significant results and are able to keep the weight off when they follow the program. Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss can work for anyone; it’s really weight loss for everybody, whether you have 15 to 20 pounds to lose, or 60 to 100 pounds to lose.” The New Year is fast approaching, and it is time to make your resolution stick – you can do it at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss where results are proven. You only have this one life, so give it all you’ve got! Get a jump on 2014 by looking and feeling better about your body now. What are you waiting for? Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss is part of Suncoast Urgent Care, which has 2 locations: 10730 S.R. 54, Suite 104 in The Trinity Village Center, and at 4112 Mariner Blvd. in Spring Hill. “Cooperstown” Continued from page 1 and that’s because a collection like this deserves to be shared and enjoyed by everyone who has a love for the sport. The Grand Opening of Schrader’s Little Cooperstown opened to much deserved fanfare in October, and now baseball fans of all ages can come and experience this incredible and historic exhibit. Created to make you feel like you’ve walked into a sports almanac, this beautiful exhibit is a living representation of the growth and change that baseball has left on history, and there are balls that represent players young and old, both Hall of Famer and Rookie, from the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Tampa Bay Rays, and every team in between. A Home Run Ticket! It all started with Mickey Mantle, who used to come down here for Spring Training, and a nine-year-old Largo native getting his first autographed ball. It was the love of baseball passed down from a father to his son, and a passion that grew from there. For Dennis, it became autographed balls in shoeboxes and Rubbermaid containers.

As the years went by, they were stashed under beds and in the attic, and as Dennis’ collection grew and grew, he was just hoping to have a place in his house so that he could enjoy them. As collectors, Dennis and Mary have collected a good deal of these balls personally, and have witnessed them being signed. Mary, who is known for always having a baseball and a pen handy, said, “We’ve had at least a thousand of these balls autographed in our presence.” Every autographed ball has a story, and each one has come to the exhibit in its own way. For example, one day Mary was trying to catch the eye of Rookie of the Year, Wil Myers, who was having a conversation in the dugout with Coach Joe Madden, and Evan Longoria said, “What do you need, Mary?” When he realized what he was looking for, he went over to Myers, tapped him on the shoulder and said, “Sign this for Mary, she’s good people.” As for how the rest were obtained, Dennis would write a letter to retired players and even celebrities asking them if they’d sign a ball. This letter writing became a passion for him, as it was a real way to connect to the people in baseball’s history. He would ask them nicely and tell them how he had a private collection that wasn’t for sale, and

would they mind signing if he sent them a ball. How’s that for a lesson in the importance of letter writing? He’s received hundreds and hundreds of balls for his collection that way. Sometimes he would get autographed pictures as well. It was in this same way that collected 170 baseballs from the men in the Negro League, and obtained 160 autographed balls from the women who played baseball while the boys were a war in the AAGPBL. He has also been fortunate enough to receive contributions from star players who have been informed of this amazing exhibit. He’s also received others through online auctions. One of Dennis’ favorite balls, if he could narrow it down, would probably be the one that was generated when they opened the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. There was 26 members in-

ducted that day, but only eleven players were still alive at the time. He has a baseball signed by all eleven along with the original ticket admitting one to the opening ceremony on June 12th, 1939. Seeing that ball is worth the trip right there. There are also a lot of baseballs that are signed by celebrities outside the realm of baseball, which makes the

exhibit fun for everyone. From Elvis Presley to a ball signed by Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio when they were married, to Arnold Palmer, Bob Barker, Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Martin Sheen, Randy Travis, Thomas Kinkade (who autographed his ball and added his signature lamppost insignia), Henry Winkler, Regis Philbin, and Betty White, just to name a few. How One Man’s Passion Became a Grand Slam! Once the word got out, people would come from all over the world to see the Schrader’s collection of baseballs. They’d stand in the Schrader’s house and just go from ball to ball in awe and wonder, remembering players, and discussing stats. Eventually the right people came, people like local legend and philanthropist, Gus Stavros, who absolutely loved it, and thought that it belonged in a place where everyone could enjoy it. Dennis says, “The next thing you know, the Mayor of St. Petersburg and all of his friends showed up at my house and said, ‘This has got to be in St. Pete!’” Over the next two years, the entire community came together to raise the $250,000 necessary to make the mu-

seum into what it is today, and it’s a wonder to behold. You don’t have to have season tickets to appreciate the love that has gone into this exhibit. Whether they visited Schrader’s Little Cooperstown when it was at Dennis and Mary’s house, or in its newfound home in St. Petersburg have been impressed with the amount of knowledge, love, and effort that have gone into it. Far more than a bunch of old baseballs, Little Cooperstown is one of St. Petersburg’s newest treasures. Dennis told me that even, Bill Rasmussen, founder and CEO of ESPN Sports said it was the, “Greatest baseball collection I’ve ever seen,” after visiting. What makes the collection complete are the people who come to visit the museum who watched these people play, who knew that player at another time. It’s the kids’ faces when they think about just how long baseball players have been coming to our state. It’s the group of Little League kids who dream of writing their name on a ball for the museum someday. It’s the Rotary Club members who come in by bus, and even use walkers and glasses to find their favorite players, but who float out on a cloud nine made of happy memories. Who knows how many baseballs

Schrader’s Little Cooperstown will have in 20 years, but one thing is for sure, and that is that baseball is more than a game––for those who love this sport, baseball is everything that is good and wholesome about being a kid. It is what being an All-American is really about. It’s about rounding the bases, catching the fly, and getting nose-tonose with that ump, even if it’s only in your imagination. Baseball has captivated the hearts of boys and girls in our community for a century. Next year St. Petersburg will be celebrating their centennial anniversary of hosting Spring Training teams. In a peanutshell, baseball is an integral part of who we are, and now we’ve got a chance to get up close, and in a way, personal, to some of those people that made the sport so great. The St. Petersburg Museum of History is located at 335 Second Ave. N.E., and is an amazing destination in itself, featuring, of course, Schrader’s

Little Cooperstown, as well as other interesting installations that shouldn’t be missed. If you’re a baseball fan, you’ve absolutely got to get down here and check this out. In fact, if you’re looking for something fun to do with your family and friends this holiday season, this exhibit is something that everyone can enjoy, and it’s just a short walk away from restaurants, shopping and more. Schrader’s Little Cooperstown is located in the St. Petersburg Museum of History on 335 Second Avenue N.E. in St. Petersburg. Hours are Tues. – Sat., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and 1 p.m.–5 p.m. on Sun.; closed Mon. General admission to the museum is $15, Senior Citizens over the age of 60 are $12, students with ID are $9, and children are $9. Children under 6 are free.
