There is nothing more important to devoted parents than the safety and happiness of their children. From the time they are born, you work hard to create a space at home where they feel loved and where they can safely explore their world. So of course, you want their learning environment away from home to be exceptional. Educare Preschool in New Port Richey focuses on providing infants and children with a safe, nurturing, enriched environment where safety is a priority, and where the faculty adheres to a higher standard than required by the county. Director Dawn Windstrup says, “This is not a typical franchise facility.
Educare Preschool is family owned and operated and we offer a higher quality school at a reasonable rate.” Educare Preschool in New Port Richey opened in February and is the newest of Educare Preschool’s three locations and the only one in Pasco County. Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point Receives Atrial Fibrillation Certification Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point announces that it has been awarded full Atrial Fibrillation Certification status from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). It is one of several of HCA’s Afib and Heart Rhythm Centers to be certified. “This certification involves rigorous evaluation of every stop along the continuum of care, to ensure we’ve implemented the latest in evidencebased best practices,” said Julie Lallanilla, VP of Cardiac Services at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. “Atrial fibrillation affects nearly five million Americans, and can increase the risk of stroke fivefold - so
when the SCPC launched the program, we jumped at the chance to ensure we’re doing what we can to enhance the quality of life for our patients,” said Shayne George, CEO of Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. “This is one more indication that we are walking the walk in our commitment to our mission, vision and values statement,” he added. Key areas in which a facility with Atrial Fibrillation Certification must demonstrate expertise include the following: · Emergency Department Integration with Emergency Medical Services · Emergency Assessment of Patients with Atrial Fibrillation · Risk Stratification of the Atrial Fibrillation Patient · Treatment for Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department in Atrial Fibrillation · Atrial Fibrillation Discharge Criteria from the Emergency Department, Observation Services, or Inpatient Stay · Atrial Fibrillation Patient Education in the Emergency Department, Observation Services, and Inpatient Unit · Personnel, Competencies and Training · Process Improvement

Robinson received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, which will be donated to Wheelchairs 4 Kids. Robinson is the driving force behind the local non-profit organization, Wheelchairs 4 Kids, with a mission to provide hope, confidence and resources to children with physical disabilities. Her drive was ignited while previously working with children’s charities and repeatedly noticing children with wheelchairs that were too small, broken and/or irreparable. Robinson realizes that it is difficult for families to acquire funding for wheelchair replacements. Kids grow quickly and children who are in wheelchairs outgrow their chairs and need replace-
ments more frequently, which is a financial hardship on many families. Seeing a real need, Robinson started Wheelchairs 4 Kids in April 2011. Wheelchair 4 Kids is a nonprofit organization providing wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications, and other assistive devices, while also hosting fun activities to give children with mobility challenges an opportunity to live life to its fullest. Robinson continues to serve as Executive Director for Wheelchairs 4 Kids and to date she has impacted the lives of close to a hundred children in provided assistance. The donation from the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program is greatly appreciated but there is more work to be done! Robinson says, “We received a $50,000 donation which will be used to help pay for many of our kids on the waitlist, but there are more!” If you’d like to find out more about how you can help provide wheelchairs to children in need, please visit the website, www.wheelchairs4kids.org or call (727) 946-0963. Last Minute Shopping is Easy at J & C Consign and Design! By Kim Thomas J & C Consign and Design Fine Furnishings and Gift Boutique is a treasure trove of excellent finds! If you have last minute Christmas shopping to do still, J & C Consign and Design has some excellent choices for inexpensive gifts that are unique and fun! From the Trinity and New Port Richey areas, if you are driving out to Citrus Park Mall, you are already going past J & C Consign and Design, which is located at 8809 Gunn Highway in Odessa, next to the Man Cave Warehouse. So why not stop by and check out the ever-changing merchandise! I stopped by recently to check out the newly consigned items and, boyoh-boy, did I score! We moved recently and I am still looking for the right mix of furniture for the house we are in. I found a beautiful antique table and a fabulous fireplace screen for my home, and I found gifts! A framed piece of quirky, fun artwork for my aunt, a couple of adorable photo frames for my brother and his wife, a

photo frame glorifying being a “Southerner” for one of my sweet-tealoving family members. But there is so much more, like the handcrafted merchandise from local artisans, including hand-painted signs, custom designed tin buckets and gift bags. Gift ideas abound in this store with picture frames from Glory Haus and festive holiday platters, cheese spreaders, and serving trays. Looking for something special? J & C has it,

and even carries a full line of luxurious Hen House linens. If you are looking for a gift, you can’t ask for an easier shopping experience. “We have people who just pull in, put the car in park, and run in for a gift because we have a great selection and it’s so easy for them,” says Christine. Truly, why find the crowds and traffic when you can pop in J & C Consign and Design. It’s easy to get into, there is plenty of

parking and the selection is a delight. Another thing to love about J & C Consign and Design – this store is budget friendly. You won’t believe what you can find for under $25. For less than $10, you can give yourself the gift of aromatherapy and try one of the Tyler Candle Company® candles. The smallest votive (2 oz.) lasts for 15 hours. Tyler Candle Company has gift sets for the holidays that are

sweet and inexpensive. I loved the one that included a candle, lovely-scented detergent for luxurious laundry and room spray. There are some delicious smelling holiday fragrances available in the candles, in addition to the fabulous scents that are always available. Furniture – Both New & Quality Pre-owned I love a good deal and don’t mind a refurbishing project, so I frequently shop at thrift stores and consignment shops. But it’s definitely hit or miss. This is not the case at J & C Consign and Design! The problem here is deciding on what to buy because there really are some great choices; of course none of them need to be redone but if you love to repurpose furniture, you can trust that the pieces you buy at J & C are quality. A lady was picking up a well-made lingerie chest that she was going to repaint and turn into an heirloom quality piece. With J & C, you have to stop in frequently enough not to miss out on the best stuff. I spied an antique chair that was wide with a low seat and a high back – a chair fit for a king that was sold to a lady before I got there at a pauper’s price! I missed
out on that one. Right now, the store has some brand new pieces from Lexington, and even the used furniture is in such great shape that I thought some of the used pieces on consignment were brand new. If you haven’t stopped in yet to J & C Consign and Design, you should. There is a great selection, and it is presented to the customer in boutique fashion, which is a refreshing and makes for a better shopping experience. And, every day there is something different and with the great prices, if you see something you like, you better buy it! J & C Consign and Design is located at 8809-B Gunn Highway in Odessa, and is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday – Saturday, and on Sunday, 12–5 p.m. Please call (813) 920-0800 for additional information or visit the website,www.jcconsign.com, where you can find information about how to submit photos of items you’d like to consign and sign up for email updates. The ToyMakers of East Lake Making Smiles One Toy at a Time! By Julie Kanehl In this world there are precious few who truly put their talents towards helping others, without the expectation of pay or press, and without specific season. The ToyMakers of East Lake are an amazing group of men and women who donate their time, their love and their talents to creating toys for children in the hopes of simply bringing a smile to their faces while they are in the hospital, recovering from an illness, or facing distress of any kind. These ToyMakers of East Lake are busy elves all year long, making thousands of toys for children with only the hope of a child’s happiness as their return. Their mission: “To provide brightly painted, simple wooden toys to children in physical or emotional distress,” is simple yet powerful, and their all-volunteer, all non-profit organization is one that makes a great difference, especially to the lives of a child. With their simple mission and the love and efforts of their many vol-

unteers, they have made a difference in thousands of lives! Authentic & Handmade with Love! ToyMakers of East Lake is an offshoot of a ToyMakers group that began with humble beginnings in Pasco County. Starting with just a few tools and a desire to help children in 1982, ToyMakers have delivered more than a quarter of a million handmade toys to local children in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, and even Alachua counties to hospitals such as All Children’s Hospital, Tampa General, Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa, and Shands Pediatric Clinic in Gainesville, just to name a few. Toys have been delivered to children as far away as Mexico, the Caribbean and South America in the aftermath of disasters, and are often delivered to local fire departments and first responders, who really appreciate having something to give to children when they are in a crisis. The ToyMakers of East Lake organization began in 2007 by ToyMakers such as Gene Watson, who puts so

much love and attention into his toys that you can’t help but smile. Located right here in Palm Harbor, ToyMakers of East Lake is an Outreach Mission for the East Lake United Methodist Church, who believes in their cause so much that they have provided them with a space for a beautiful workshop. Through donations, pledges and gifts, their toyshop is a wonder to behold. Maybe you can’t see it when you’re driving by, but there’s a whole lot of ToyMakers is a fun and fulfilling way to make a magic going on in that difference in the community shop. Many busy elves donate several mornings a carefully sanded to remove any sharp week to carefully creating toys out of edges. Each wheel is created, laced wood using simple patterns and band- onto straws and painted with care, saws. Children cherish these simple, old-fashioned toys handmade with love and given to boys and girls who clutch them to their chests and can’t wait to race them around their rooms. Maybe it’s the love that’s so present in each car, maybe it’s that each one is unique, just like every child, or maybe it’s that many children have never been given a handmade gift that can raise their spirits so quickly. Whatever the magic is, it’s real, it’s palpable and it’s truly touching. I took my own children to the ToyMakers of East Lake Open House and Silent Auction on Saturday, November 15th at the East Lake United Methodist Church. Each of my children were given a handmade car and given many chances to race their car on a handmade ramp outside the event. My three-year-old daughter wanted to do nothing but “race” her pretty car for hours, and she hasn’t slept without that gem of a car since that day. Children know a gift made with love when they receive one. While I was there, not only did I get an amazing tour of their toyshop and get to meet some of the kind people who volunteer their time for this wonderful cause, but I also learned that there’s more than one mission here. There’s obviously the declared mission of making toys for children who are suffering, but also I saw that there was a ministry here of adults,
many of whom are retirees, who found a renewed purpose, a whole new group of friends, and a renewed faith in the world through volunteering. I was so moved by the program, that I want to volunteer! Why don’t you join me? You Can Help! Current President of the ToyMakers of East Lake Board, Bob Helms, is like many volunteers who thought they’d come by one Saturday a month, but fell in love with the mission, and in doing so, found himself at the shop on a very regular basis. Soon, his wife, Janet, joined the cause as well, and today they are both on the Board, hoping to help lead ToyMakers of East Lake to help even more people. Bob says, “ToyMakers are people like you and me! You don’t have to be able to operate complicated woodworking machinery to be a volunteer here. We have one volunteer who really enjoys tracing patterns onto the wood, and we have others who love to paint daisies on the Daisy cars.” He adds, “Whatever you can do, there’s a way you can help.” ToyMakers of East Lake is always looking for volunteers! In addition to making beautiful toy cars, Toy Makers of East Lake also makes boats, airplanes, helicopters, and walking duck

Gene Watson (right) is one of the founders of ToyMakers of East Lake and penguin toys, just to name a few! These walking toys are a really wonderful way of helping kids who need to be walking as part of their therapy – while walking their ducks; they don’t even realize that they’re doing their therapy! A third ministry is their bicycle program. Toymakers of East Lake collects used, discarded and out-grown bicycles, and refurbishes them and gives them to people in need – for both children and adults! Working with local schools and other charitable organizations such as Homeless Working Adults, they even help send used and refurbished bicycles to Haiti and other areas in need after a crisis, so that those people can get work and provide for their families. Additionally, ToyMakers of East

Lake is proud to partner with students who are part of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which provides scholarship opportunities for students in our area who have very bright futures, but need help financially. These students need volunteer hours as part of the program, and many of the students who volunteer for ToyMakers of East Lake have found themselves coming back once their volunteer requirements have been met! They become volunteers for the love of helping others instead of just for credit! So, this year, if you’re looking for a way to give more than presents, and you’d love a way to give back and “pay-it-forward,” you can help by volunteering, donating, or even sponsoring this worthy cause! Every little bit helps! Whether you can donate your time, commit $5 a month, or simply donate the old bicycles in your garage, the Toymakers of East Lake would be very grateful, and you’d be helping a cause that doesn’t just help children at this time of year, but one that helps local children all year long. So, what do you say? How about I see you at the shop? The ToyMakers of East Lake’s Workshop is located at 2690 Tanglewood Trail in Palm Harbor, behind the East Lake United Methodist Church. If you would like to donate, sponsor or volunteer – and ToyMakers needs experienced woodworkers – please visit the website at toymakersofeastlake.org or email them at toys@toymakersofeastlake.org.

Make The Most out of Family Time This Holiday Season! By Julie Kanehl The holidays are the most hectic time of the year, which is kind of funny when you think about it, because it’s supposed to be the time of the year when everyone comes together to enjoy each other’s company, share what they’re grateful for and rejoice in the greater meanings that are the basis for the festivities! Instead, we find ourselves busier than ever, more stressed than ever, and probably not feeling at peace with the holiday season. Is this ringing any bells? Well, here are some helpful tips to minimize the stress and maximize the togetherness! The first is to create a holiday to-do board! It’s easy and it doesn’t have to be fancy or “Pinterest” worthy! Just have everyone in your family write down a holiday activity that they would love to participate in during the next couple of weeks, and together as a family you can work together to make those things happen! These activities don’t need to be fancy or
30
expensive! Here are some examples: Making sugar cookies, decorating them in the kitchen and sharing them with friends and family! How about choosing a night to go look at Christmas lights in your pajamas? No one will know! What about packing up a picnic of holiday goodies, your favorite movies and showing up at your best friend’s house for a holiday movie night? Maybe your little one wants to see everyone
For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NNLFlorida.com
go ice-skating at the mall, or perhaps see a holiday movie on the big screen? Maybe it’s as simple as having hot chocolate by the fireplace, if you have one, or fire pit even! Whatever ideas your family comes up with, it should be a great conversation–starter and set the tone that the holidays really should be about being together, instead of accumulating mass quantities of stuff!
DECEMBER 2014
Be Creative! Another idea is to spend some holiday time being creative! With all of the fancy phone apps, it’s not hard to take a picture that will make a beautiful holiday card, so grab a friend or a neighbor with a smart phone and take some fun pictures that really show your family’s personal sense of style! Pictures can be printed off cheaply all around town, and you can even handcraft your
Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
cards from scratch. There’s nothing like a handmade holiday card! If you are too busy, you can easily have your picture made into a card that is ready to pick up at the store the next time you go out for milk. One of my favorite activities is a Holiday Themed Game Night! You can use your family’s favorite board games, play your own version of “Minute to Win It” or even have contests like “Who can go the longest without using their iPhone/Tablet!” Set the stakes high – maybe the winner gets to choose the next holiday movie or control the remote control for the next two hours. Perhaps they get to open the first present when it’s finally time! Think outside the box! If you’ve never tried it, maybe this is the year to get your family or friends together to make a gingerbread house! Or everyone could make his or her own and you’ll have a whole village of gingerbread. Have a contest! Set the rules, and then get out all of the old Halloween candy for decorating, and use whatever else is left over in the pantry from cereal to chips to make your own unique creation! Take lots of pictures and you won’t believe how much fun you’ll have! This is re-
ally a great activity for people of all ages, artists and non-artists alike, and it’s a tasty activity too! Give Back! Of course, eating is an essential part of the holiday, so getting together to bake is a given, but maybe you can do something different this year and bake for someone else! Do you know of anyone who is in need? Maybe going through a hard time? It doesn’t take a holiday to reach out and help others, but sometimes this time is the best time to do just that. If you’d like to give back this season, there are myriads of opportunities out there. Many of the local churches and synagogues offer opportunities to help the needy! This can be as easy as donating clothes from your own closets to going out and helping to serve the homeless. Whatever you decide to do this holiday, do it with love and kindness. For these are the roots of every holiday celebration, and to be together at the holidays is really the greatest blessing of all. Happy Holidays from all of us at Neighborhood News and Lifestyles! We look forward to serving you in 2015!

Adopt a Rescue Dog from Canine Estates! “At any given time Canine Estates can have up to 35 dogs, some are special needs,” says Dolly Smith, of the Canine Estates rescue organization. She adds, “Most recently we took in a whole family of Chihuahua’s, all fleainfested. There were five in total and then there were nine! At only 1 year old and just a baby herself, this little one gave birth to four puppies. Thankfully the puppies were born safely under the care of our vet tech.” Canine Estates is a local nonprofit organization that fosters and adopts out small dogs. Dolly says, “Canine Estates is not simply a rescue, we do not pick and choose the dogs that we take in. We take the ones others overlook, the blind, the sick or those very old. Deep down we always hope a “Special Person” will come along and adopt, because in the end they just want a warm bed and someone to love them. years so she has a lot of wonderful years and love to give to her new family! She does have KCS (dry eye) and will require eye drops for her entire life. An adult home or one with older children would be best for Precious! She is very sweet, loving and playful. She was found in Largo as a stray by SPCA before coming to rescue and is so ready to become part of a family once again.” Another Special Pup is Barney, a beautiful Shih-Tzu mix who has limited vision in only one eye due to glaucoma. Dolly says, “Everyone at Canine Estates loves Barney. His eye was saved when we took him to our vet and an ophthalmology doctor. He is so very sweet and loving and just draws you to him. Barney does take medication in his eyes but he doesn’t mind it. Dogs do exceptionally well with limited eyesight or even totally blind.” Dolly urges, “Make an appointment and meet some of our dogs at Canine Estates, you never know – your best friend just may be there to greet you. Longleaf Elementary Celebrates 10 Years of Education and Arts By Dara Tucker Ten years ago Longleaf Elementary opened their doors wanting their students to excel in academics and the arts. Under the direction of their principal Jennifer Heptig and assistant principal Debra Wichmanowski, Longleaf Elementary continues their longstanding tradition of educating the whole child. Students focus on Florida Standards and take high stakes testing just as they do in all public schools in Pasco County; however, at Longleaf special area teachers (music, art, and physical education) are known as enrichment teachers. These enrichment teachers communicate frequently with regular education teachers to see how they can integrate the Florida Standards into the special areas. This integration often allows students to better comprehend new skills as they see how it applies to the arts and physical education. dom also represented the State of Florida in Honolulu for Hawaii’s Fiftieth Birthday Celebration. A third grade chorus starts in the spring, and second graders are already practicing their choral skills in class. Speaking and listening skills are an essential part of the new Florida Standards. Children that perform regularly in front of audiences not only practice their speaking skills, but also are practicing their reading fluency in a real world context. It doesn’t feel to students that they are practicing reading when they memorize their lyrics, or math as they count beats to music! Longleaf Elementary also performs an annual musical, which is directed by fourth grade teacher Janene Redfield and James Wanker. The musical provides another opportunity for students to audition and participate in an after school activity which allows them to put their English/Languages Arts skills to use. In the past students have performed adaptions of Annie, Aladdin, Willy Wonka , Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid to a live audience at night. Auditions for the musical is something many students start talking about shortly after school starts
in the fall – before the musical for the year is even decided on! Art
teachers worked with students on the international introduction to computer science called the Hour of Code for the first time this year.
In addition to weekly art, fourth and fifth graders receive a “Call to Artists” inviting them to try out for a weekly art club called Modern Masters. This small group of students are able to learn more advanced art techniques in the before school setting, and their art is able to be more student driven. For years, including this coming year, Longleaf has hosted summer art camps. These camps allow for students to keep their creativity flowing during the summer and use art mediums, such as clay, that they don’t find at most summer camps. Longleaf Art Department believes displaying student artwork is an important part of the visual arts process and participates yearly in several local shows such as Pasco County Fair. Students learn the connection between visual art and writing as they are taught to “edit and revise” their pieces with an artist’s eye before their pieces are displayed. Because today’s students will be creating art in a digital world, Longleaf Elementary School’s art
Physical Education Donna Qualtiere and Susan Erickson take their physical education department to the next level. They won the “Back to Football Contest” put on by Play 60, with the grant earning them enough money to build a fitness trail. They accomplished a Guinness Book of World records by performing the world’s largest hulahoop workout. Each year they host a duathlon with over 100 children participating and an annual hula hoop challenge that has children hula hooping for up to 5 hours. The ESE students at Longleaf Elementary participate in Special Olympics including: softball skills, bowling, cycling, soccer team and soccer skills. Longleaf physical education hosts the sectional NFL Punt Pass and Kick contest, and participates in Fitness Gram. The coaches work to foster teamwork, good sportsmanship and healthy habits among all their students in order to foster lifetime skills that will serve them well as they grow into

productive, active adults. Mini Majors After visiting a school of the arts in Polk County, Longleaf Elementary’s enrichment team and administrators were excited to model a Mini Major in our county. Mini Majors are an exploratory arts wheel for fourth and fifth graders. Every seven weeks students rotate through an introduction to an area of the fine or performance arts. This year these rotations include dance, photography, green screen, glass fusing, and musical theatre. The school has received fabulous feedback from students about Mini Majors, including students saying they don’t ever want to miss school on Mini Major days! Longleaf Elementary is proud to celebrate their tenth anniversary this year, and even prouder of their staff and students who make the school a shining star in our community. Longleaf Elementary is located at 3252 Town Avenue in the beautiful Longleaf subdivision. Longleaf is under the leadership of Principal Jennifer Heptig and Assistant Principal Debra Wichmanowski.

Friendship Singers Celebrate 20 Harmonious Years! By Marcy Sanford “Friendship and peace, may it bloom and grow,” sang members of The Friendship Singers at the beginning of their 20th Anniversary Celebration in December. Member after member of the group will tell you that while they are proud of the joy and peace they bring to the people they sing to, being a member of the group brings joy and peace to them personally as well: the joy of forging new and lasting friendships and the peace of knowing there is a community of people to celebrate with you during happy times and support you during difficult ones. “A friend told me about the Friendship Singers 19 years ago,” says Joyce Allen. “I have always loved to sing. I like going to the nursing homes and being able to entertain the patients there. It is wonderful to be able to bring a little comfort and happiness to people’s day. I also really appreciate the fellowship of the group. Everyone looks out for each other and comforts and helps each other through our own

We have people who live all over the area from Dade City to Carrollwood, Odessa to Wesley Chapel. In addition to the joy we get from performing for nursing home residents, we have all become like fam-

The only requirement for becoming one of The Friendship Singers is a love of singing. The group practices twice a month at the Land O’ Lakes Senior Citizens Center and typically performs twice a month at homes and centers throughout Hillsborough and Pasco County. “Educare” Continued from page 1 Educare Preschool in New Port Richey follows the same guidelines as the locations in Pinellas. Dawn explains, “Our teachers are required to keep a transition log, so basically we know everything they are doing throughout the day. We also get Emergency Release Forms from parents on all of our students and we do local background checks on everyone who works here. These are things that aren’t required in Pasco County, but Educare Preschool wants to provide the highest level of care possible. We stay below the teacher-to-student ratios that are required by Pasco County.” Prior to becoming a partner and the Director of the New Port Richey location, Dawn was the Director at the Countryside Educare Preschool, and brings years of experience to this newest location, striving to make it a family-like, warm atmosphere conducive to learning. Parents and visitors alike must be buzzed in through the locked front door of Educare Preschool, for added security. The open and welcoming lobby is brightly decorated and has a
comfortable seating area and behind the front desk is a large monitor showing views of the entire facility from the cameras throughout. Educare Preschool is equipped to care for infants as young as eight weeks to preschool-aged children, but the 12,000-square-foot facility also has enough space for summer camp, which the facility plans on offering this summer to school-aged children. There is a large outdoor play area, which the teachers try to use every day if the weather permits, as well as a huge indoor play area. While each of the age groups are kept in separate areas, the low walls allow Dawn to oversee every area at all times. Personally, I liked the open feel of the big space at Educare Preschool, and all of the children in the classes were happy and well attended. Miss Nola had her class of 4-year-olds in the VPK program mesmerized at story-telling time. They listened intently and followed her direction eagerly, proving that these little ones are going to know what it takes to be a successful student, even at their young age. Educare Preschool is an approved VPK provider. Dawn points out that the VPK program is free to everyone

“Hearing” Continued from page 1 Offering a range of services to help patients with hearing concerns, Dr. Hansen helps people of all ages, from children to the elderly who have hearing loss, ringing in the ears (Tinnitus) and other inner ear concerns. Hearing loss usually develops gradually over time, although some hearing loss can be sudden. Whatever is going on, you can be sure that there’s no guesswork going on at Trinity Hearing & Balance, as they have the very best technology on hand. Combined with an educated staff that is patient and caring, it’s no surprise that people recommend Dr. Hansen. Dr. Hansen says, “I perform hearing evaluations for children and adults, determining whether or not it is a temporary hearing loss or permanent nerve damage.” She adds, “Some hearing loss is medically treatable which is why a diagnostic hearing test is important to rule in or rule out a medical component that could be contributing to the hearing loss.” While hearing loss cannot be reversed, there are many options that can help! Whether you live a very busy
50
lifestyle, or you tend to enjoy the quiet, Trinity Hearing & Balance can help you find the right hearing aid for you. Today’s hearing aids are smaller, and less noticeable, unless of course you want to be noticed, and then of course, they come in a wide range of fun colors. The most important thing is that they work when you need them. Dr. Hansen and her staff are well versed in the many different types and styles available and they can help you navigate the many options. Offering free hearing screenings and demonstrations of the latest hearing aid technology, Dr. Hansen wants people to know that there are solutions. Most of the time, it’s not something you have to suffer through or live with. Specializing in advanced digital hearing aids, Dr. Hansen has special training in how to fit them to your individual specifications. The newest technology allows people to hear at the dinner table when seated in a noisy restaurant, have less feedback, and are less irritating to wear than the models that came before them. Additionally, the staff at Trinity Hearing & Balance takes care of their patients long-term, regularly removing earwax when necessary and making sure that the hearing aids are working

Nikki Goldowski, Dr. Kelly Hansen with Lucy, and Christine Smith of Trinity Hearing & Balance wish you a Happy & Safe Holiday Season as they are intended. This is all part of Dr. Hansen’s dedication and personalized approach. Robert and Joan said, “We wanted to let you know… we appreciate your care and patience. You did not rush us or mind taking the time to do things right. We have had such bad luck with other hearing aids. It seems all we did was send the hearing aids to be repaired and pay more money. At

times we thought we would never find any help or be able to hear. Our home life was very frustrating as you can imagine. Now, it is unbelievable we feel like life is worth living again. We highly recommend Dr. Hansen.” Balance, Dizziness & Vertigo Dizziness is one of the most common health complaints in the world, and often, it’s a symptom that indi-
Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
cates to physicians that something else is going on. Often, it has something to do with the inner ear. These conditions can lead to balance issues, making it difficult to live a full life! Millions of Americans are living with vertigo, and it’s a very difficult condition to “live with.” It can strike at any time, and one minute you’re fine and the next minute the floor seems to be rushing up to meet you! Dr. Hansen says, “I get a lot of referrals from primary care doctors about dizziness!” Scientifically, the ear is a masterpiece! And inside your inner ear, there are particles that help center you, and assist you with balance. These particles can become displaced, and when even one particle gets out of place, it can cause dizziness, nausea, disorientation, balance problems and of course vertigo. This is called Positional Vertigo, and it can now be cured in her office! To help make things easier for patients to understand, Dr. Hansen has instituted an amazing program called “ePatient.” This program helps patients to really understand each step in their care, and simplifies things into layman’s terms. To best treat her patients, Dr.
Hansen has brought in the very best technology out there to help diagnose and treat patients who suffer from dizziness and vertigo associated with the inner ear. This genius piece of equipment looks like something out of a NASA training program, but it can actually resolve vertigo issues right away! It’s called the Epley Omniax System. The Epley Omniax System actually uses goggles that are fitted with cameras that monitor a patient’s eyes. Once Dr. Hansen is able to diagnose what is happening using the Epley Omniax System, she is able to rotate the patient 360 degrees, and actually guide the particles back into the inner ear where they belong! This is the future of vertigo treatment! The best part is that patients who have this kind of vertigo may only need this one time treatment! Fred, a patient of Trinity Hearing & Balance said, “Thank you so much for giving me a life without vertigo!” Don’t miss another minute. If you or a loved one is suffering from hearing loss or dizziness associated with vertigo, there are a number of treatment options available at Trinity Hearing & Balance!

Slim Boy Alex Takes on America’s Got Talent New Port Richey's own, 23-yearold Slim Boy Alex, has been playing guitar and singing around town since the age of 14, so a lot of folks in the area have had a chance to watch him perform, but what you may not know is that he was called back for a second audition with the hit NBC show America's Got Talent and he still has a shot at being chosen for the show’s tenth season. Producers from America’s Got Talent were in Tampa holding auditions on November 2, 2014. “There were thousands of people there and the entire atmosphere was electrifying,” shares Allen Markow, who is Alex’s father. Slim Boy Alex had a "scheduled" time of 9 a.m. He got there at 6:45 a.m. and the line to get into the convention center went around the building then looped back and forth like waiting for the latest Disney World ride. He didn’t even get into the building until after 9 a.m. After filling out a ton of paperwork and signing his life away, Slim Boy Alex said, “Then the fun began!” A different world unfolded at the audition! The “holding area” was a large room with chairs, lights, and

and there were two judges. I only had 90 seconds and I had rehearsed a song called Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger. The reaction was immediate and positive. I was told to wait outside the room. I waited about an hour and saw everyone else have their audition and leave. I was then asked to come to another room for a second audition. I was ready with a song by Jim Croce, Don’t Mess Around with Jim. On the second round, the judges were very happy and one said, ‘There is something about you that I cannot keep my eyes off of.’ Then by 11 p.m. that night I was able to go home. It was a long day but a good one.” Slim Boy Alex is waiting to hear back from the producers of the NBC hit show America’s Got Talent to see if he will be chosen to compete cameras on long boom poles and a lot of talented people running around. The center stage area was a hub of action, where all day long acts were getting up and performing. At times there would be five different jugglers, or six people trying to sing different things at the same time.

“There were times when they were filming and we all had to go crazy,” says Slim Boy Alex. “So, for the next eight hours, I waited for my number to come up. They took 50 people at a time down out for the auditions. Around 5 p.m., my number was called. I went into a smaller room
