Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Congratulations to Winners of Neighborhood News & Lifestyles’ 2014 Dining Contest! We are excited to announce the winners of Neighborhood News & Lifestyles’ 2014 Dining Contest. Each year, we look forward to this contest because it is exciting to see how many responses we will get, and it gives us a chance to give back to our readers as a thank you for your support. This year, as in the past, our readers responded with gusto, with hundreds sending us their votes for favorite restaurants in the area. We have some excellent eateries and in some of the categories, we wish we could announce two winners because it was a close contest right up to the last entries! Not surprising to us, some of your favorite restaurants also happen to be some of our favorite advertisers and while we congratulate all of the top contending restaurants, we want

to give special congratulations to the excellent restaurants that advertise in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. When it came to best overall favorite, there was a close battle and in the end two restaurants tied, both winning that proud designation. Those winners are Mellow Mushroom and Mystic Fish. In addition, Mellow Mushroom was also voted as the best pizza joint. Congrats to you Mellow Mushroom! Salt Rock Tavern won voters over as the best Happy Hour spot while its sister restaurant Rumba Island Bar & Grill was voted as the best restaurant for lunch. Best sushi restaurant was won by Hot Tuna, and for good reason their sushi is amazing! Congratulations to all the winning restaurants! You see a full list of

River Jordan Direct Family Medicine By Marcy Sanford Eric J. Crall, MD opened River Jordan Direct Family Medicine after becoming frustrated with the amount of time he was spending each day on administrative tasks and paperwork instead of taking care of patients. He says, “I became a doctor to help people stay healthy. After 17 years of working as a primary care physician for a large health care system, I found myself spending less time with my patients and more time on paperwork.” Located at 4651 Van Dyke Road in Lutz, Dr. Crall’s practice is based on the Direct Patient Care model. This new model of primary care ensures that Dr. Crall’s patients receive expert personalized care and treatment for a very reasonable cost. The innovative Direct Patient Care model is now being embraced by patients, physicians, employers, and policymakers across the United States. Individual patients, families, or companies pay a low monthly fee and receive expert primary care while developing a lasting and trusting relationship with their doctor. Thanks to this model, River Jordan Direct Family Medicine patients receive unparalleled access to Dr. Crall. “Because I am working for my patients and not insurance companies, I can spend as much time with my patients in the office as needed,” says Dr. Crall. “I proactively manage my patients’ health and help them manage

any health issues they have. I am available to my patients by phone, email, or, if appropriate, by virtual visits. This can save patients’ time and give them peace of mind whenever they have an issue or concern.” Dr. Crall schedules an hour for each patient visit, so when patients come to his office there is little to no waiting. He says, “Because I spend an hour with my patients, I have time to talk to them about all of their health issues and really get to know them so that I can provide them with the best

care possible. I am available to my patients during evenings and weekends by text or cell phone. My patients have direct access to me; they will not be talking to an answering service or an on-call physician or nurse.” “I have always loathed doctor's visits, until meeting Dr. Crall,” says River Jordan Direct Family Medicine patient Josh Parker. “I enjoyed meeting with him; he was very caring, openly sharing, and upfront about the situation at hand. He presented the options and information in an easy to

understand manner, which helped me feel comfortable. Thank you, Dr. Crall, for being a forward thinker and offering a service that works for people like me and families like mine.” Dr. Crall is happy to help prospective patients to understand the rapidly changing landscape within the healthcare system to determine if the direct patient model would be suited to their needs. He says, “Because much of your health care is predictable, you can often save money with the direct patient model by automatically budgeting for your predictable primary care needs. You should still have insurance to cover high cost, unpredictable events, but because your day-to-day care is handled at River Jordan Direct Family Medicine, you can choose a plan with a higher deductible and a lower premium than your current plan. Most of my patients end up saving money on their health care, because of the low-cost primary care component.” At River Jordan Direct Family Medicine the monthly membership fee is as follows:

Magic Is Alive and Well at The Magic Emporium – Tampa’s “Best Kept Secret” By Deborah Bostock-Kelley As you open the glass and brown metal door, all the cynicism of adulthood is wiped away; you have just returned to the wonderment of childhood. For this generation of children, it’s like Harry Potter discovering Diagon Alley in the middle of a quaint Muggle neighborhood. In the far right corner of an unassuming shopping complex is a secret world filled with vintage card tricks and modern-day illusions. The shelves are lined with guides, memorabilia and novelty items. This is no ordinary shop, but a special meeting place where amateurs and professionals, young and young at heart, can purchase tricks and props and meet monthly to socialize and discuss magic. Since opening its brick and mortar location at 4429 Gunn Highway, The Magic Emporium has become a Mecca for magicians locally, throughout the United States and around the world.

12

DECEMBER 2014

“I’ve been in the business about 10 years,” says founder Gary Barker. “We opened the shop in November 2009. Before that we were exclusively online and at magic conventions.” At the age of 8, Barker had his first introduction to magic when magician and ventriloquist Mark Wade performed at his elementary school. “I bugged my parents to take me to the library to get a book on magic and have never looked back,” he explains. Barker performs at corporate events, private parties and churches, and does a lot of charity work. He opened The Magic Emporium to give the public much more than a retail shop, but the full magic experience from a bygone era. “I have a passion for magic, but I have a passion for the experience that you get from a brick and mortar that you cannot get online,” says Gary. “I love the Internet and technology, but there is something intrinsically beautiful about doing magic and learning face-to-face. You can only get that ex-

perience in a real shop.” From beginners in preschool, elementary and high school to unconventional tattooed twentysomething’s to senior citizens honing a lifetime craft, in his shop Gary has seen the style evolution of magic, from illusionist David Copperfield to street shock magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. Gary says, “I personally believe what’s good for magic is good for all of us. From the different styles of performing, huge illusions to shock magic, there is a place for all of that. Magic – for most of us in the arts – is kind of a culmination of all art forms – theatre, drama and pantomime, music. It a culmination of all performing arts melting together as one.” Gary believes that even today’s youth, with technology at their fingertips, still appreciate a good magic performance. And longtime magicians Rudy Hernandez and Dick Johnson “The Old Pro”, who were meeting at the Magic Emporium for the monthly

Founder Gary Barker Tampa Magic Club, Warren Hamilton International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.) Ring 175, agree with Gary. “I’ve been a magician all of my life,” says Johnson, who regularly performs at holiday shows, especially during Halloween. “I think if the kids sit

This is no ordinary shop, but a special meeting place where amateurs and professionals, young and young at heart, can purchase tricks and props and meet monthly to socialize and discuss magic. down and pay attention, they are not too jaded to appreciate magic. Live entertainment is still a good thing. I enjoy what I call apparatus magic – with the birds and a rabbit; I used to have a girl doing illusions with me.” Hernandez, who has been performing for 40 years, explains, “The kids today are learning magic on YouTube and away from other magicians. When I was learning, the only way you could learn was from other magicians and going to a group like this and actually having social contact. Magic is secondary to the entertainment. Magic is a tool and entertainment is the show. It’s good to have the social interaction.”

The Magic Emporium understands that technology is changing the way in which we can learn magic. The shop now offers weekly "Live Online" lectures where famous magicians from around the world teach and train magicians in the comfort of their home. These lectures are streamed live every week and magicians can stream the lecture live from the comfort of their home and then download that lecture and watch at any time from their computer, phone or tablet. "This 'At the Table' lecture series is helping them educate magicians around the world and reach to places where there is not an actual brick and mortar store like The Magic Emporium.

Kid’s Club The Magic Emporium also hosts a Kids Club called the Society of Young Magicians the second Saturday of each month, with its youngest regular magician with the stage-name “The Amazing John John (Humphries) having started at just 4 years old. Gary says, “At first I was bit skeptical about how engaged someone that young could become, but surprisingly over the last year he has grown, honed his skills and done a really fabulous job at learning both the tricks and how to present them well. It’s exciting to see kids especially that young really get something out of this experience.” In addition to monthly club meetings, The Magic Emporium provides magic throughout the year in various ways. "During the summer months we offer magic camps for children,” says Gary. “Every Sunday night during the summer we present The Masters of Magic, a weekly professional magic show that features various magicians from around the United States.” The Magic Emporium also provides professional entertainers; magicians, clowns, balloon artists, jugglers and other variety acts for private parties, company functions and various

events throughout Florida all year round. In his five years at his Gunn Highway location, Gary has also discovered the magic is being utilized by non-magicians in unique and innovative ways. He says, “We get a lot of educators who come in and ask for magic they can use to engage their students and use as teaching tools. We have several math and science teachers who come in frequently to get magic tricks like optical illusions that they can use to reinforce what they are teaching in their classrooms.” Several magic and balloon groups, like I.B.M., Gulfcoast chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians, and the Balloon Jam, comprised of full-time and part-time entertainers, hobbyists, and new people simply interested in learning more about the craft, call the Magic Emporium home for their monthly meetings and lectures. “We live in a crazy world and the stresses of life are sometimes heavy,” concludes Gary. “Magic can take you back to that moment of wonder and belief that you had when you were a child when you had hopes and dreams and really believed they could come true. I love that about magic. If I could communicate one thing to Carrollwood it would be that we are the best-kept secret in Tampa Bay! We love magic and our community and we’d love to share that moment of wonder.” The Magic Emporium is located at 4429 Gunn Highway in Tampa. They are open Mon. – Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on magic classes, lectures, shows, meetings, and camps, please call (813) 265 -9263, visit www.TheMagicEmporium.net or Facebook.com/MagicEmporium.

“Celtic Day Spa” Continued from page 1 applying to your skin. Annette reveals that no painful extractions are necessary because the patented cleansing exfoliant simply melts deep into the skin to remove any impurities. She adds, that unlike most scrubs or exfoliation processes, you do not rinse off the Celtic Day Spa exfoliation treatment. Developed by a board certified plastic and cosmetic surgeon, combining science and nature, the TreSkinRX skin care line is a game-changer. “Most products are water-based – possibly like the ones you have in your cupboard – because they are cheaper to make,” explains Annette. “What we have is unique in the fact that each product base is 100 percent certified, pharmaceutical grade aloe vera that’s normally used in medical situations.” Suitable for all skin types, the TreSkinRX lineup includes products that help with skin issues like rosacea, dryness, pigmentation, eczema, keratosis pilaris, and numerous other conditions. The skin care line has also been used to lessen the inflamed skin, of cancer patients and those who have

18

gone through skin graft surgery. Annette explained that she knew what it felt like to “suffer in silence” with a skin condition and when she discovered TreSkinRX on a visit to Texas, she simply had to share her story, of how these extraordinary products has the ability to change lives. When a customer comes to Celtic Day Spa, Annette will first cleanse and analyze their skin to determine their skin type. With healthy skin, there is evenness in the layers; whereas with unhealthy skin you have a thick top layer – without proper, exfoliation dead skin keeps building up and dulls the complexion. Celtic Day Spa’s deep, exfoliation process has the lowest effective pH similar to a physician’s office peel – without inflammation. Annette explained that too many people self-diagnose, or purchase products based on someone else’s experience and get the wrong type of products for their skin. “I love being able to help people get beautiful skin,” she says. “I want to show them how easy it is with these products to keep their skin looking and feeling amazing.” TreSkinRX is an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial agent. Annette says, “The aloe

It’s pretty amazing seeing the results.” Annette feels extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to help a lot of men, women and children with their various skin conditions over the years. “It’s especially rewarding helping teenagers with acne,” she adds. “It has been an amazing experience to give teenagers back their confidence by helping them clear their skin.”

“J & C Consign” Continued from page 1 including a hair salon, an on-site rehab center, a theatre room and a café, where residents can enjoy lattes, pastries, and cocktails. Conveniently located in the heart of the Citrus Park and Westchase neighborhoods and in close proximity to Carrollwood, Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park allows easy access to everything that the beautiful Tampa Bay area has to offer. Age in Place At Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park the staff will strive to carry on the mission of the Arbor Company by providing a welcoming, secure community where residents can age in place. Uniquely designed, Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park has three floors, from supervised memory care on the first, to The Bridges on the second (a program dedicated to helping patients with early onset of dementia and

Alzheimer’s), to independent living and assisted living on the third. “As a resident, you have peace of mind knowing that we can promote your independence and still meet your needs as you age in place,” says Senior Care Counselor Diane McGauley. “It is our goal to provide all residents with a safe and positive living environment and to enhance their quality of life through our engaged living program.” By providing a diverse community, Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park is a place where, as you go through the stages of life you can receive as little or as much care as you require. Moving is already stressful enough as it is, but can you imagine having to go through this as a patient suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s? As a place that takes care of all your memory care needs, from early onset to the later stages, Arbor Terrace helps make your life and the life of your loved one as smooth a transition as possible. “We customize our care services to each individual resident,” says Diane. “We also look at customizing our activities to the needs and wants of residents.” As a community of caregivers, the staff at Arbor Terrace engages and enriches the health and spirits of their

should an emergency occur. Earning the prestigious Extended Congregate Care (ECC) licensure, all staff employed by the Arbor Company are well versed and expertly trained on how to care for patients of all levels. Executive Director Traci Kiklica says, “Our staff has gone above and beyond in their training; each member is specially trained in dementia using a hands-on positive approach in the care of their patients.”

Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park will feature elegant, modern designs and have a warn, comfy atmosphere where residents can feel welcome and at home. A further testament to their level of care, the Resident Care Director for Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park is also an RN – in the world of assisted living that is definitely a significant plus! “Promoting continuity of care for our residents is very important to us,” says Diane. “We have partnered with medical director Dr. Atigere, who will not only be seeing our residents in our community but also caring for them should they have to go to the hospital or a skilled nursing facility – that’s a big deal.

The Bridges Helping to bridge the gap for those suffering from early stages of memory impairment, The Bridges program allows residents to peacefully transition into their new lifestyle. With a whole floor dedicated to this program, The Bridges gives married couples the option to live together in the same apartment and although it is not a full memory care unit, staff members are always on call and near by to help, should you or your loved one need assistance.

“Quite often is the case that one spouse is extremely independent, but their spouse has dementia or another disability, and they don’t feel capable of meeting their needs alone,” says Diane. “We can provide together, as much or as little assistance as they like, allowing them to still live together in the same apartment at different care levels.”

RESPITE Housing Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park will also offer short-term stays and will have furnished apartments available to accommodate these guests. RESPITE housing is perfect for those who are looking to re-cooperate or recover from a surgery and need a little extra attention before going back to their home setting. It is also a great option for when a caregiver needs to take a well-deserved vacation, as you know your loved one will be in a loving community where they will be well cared for before returning home.

Dining with Dignity With their innovative Dining with Dignity dining program, favorite foods that were once forbidden are now on the menu for residents in the Arbor Company Engaged Living memory care program who cannot easily manage utensils or swallow solid foods. This awesome new technique of preparing foods allows diners to enjoy dining options such as spaghetti and meatballs, prepared in a way where no utensils are needed; all while retaining the full taste, as well as the texture, consistency, and “five star” attractiveness of the original dish. The converted dishes are finger-ready and allow residents to once again enjoy their favorite foods in a way that was thought to be long forgotten. “Dining with Dignity will not only help make eating easier for those Westchase Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

suffering from macular degeneration and dementia, but also those who suffer from vision impairment or anyone who might have trouble using utensils,” says Traci. Since being implemented in their other locations, 30 percent of memory care residents participating in the program have shown improved intake, and 90 percent of respondents in the survey approved of the menu choices; this is just another significant offering that will really distinguish Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park. This past year, Arbor Terrace’s Dining With Dignity dining program received National recognition, proudly becoming the newest winner of the coveted Best of the Best Awards at the annual Assisted Living Federation of America conference. Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park will have three different types of apartments available for rent – studio apartments, one-bedroom apartments and private companion suites (which are essentially two bedroom suites with a shared bathroom and kitchenette). To help ensure they safety of their residents, all apartments will be equipped with an emergency call system. It is also important to note that Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park is pet friendly; although residents do have to be able to care for the pets themselves. A beautiful, brand new community that will offer the best in assisted living and memory care, Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park is simply what assisted living should be! Arbor Terrace of Citrus Park is set to open in early 2015 and will be located just south of Sickles High School at 13810 Sheldon Road in Tampa. Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, recoloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. John Cole and his wife were ready to re-tile their entire bathroom before calling BJ at Grout Tech. “Our bathroom tile was over 40 years old it was looking grungy and very dull. We called Grout Tech and we are extremely pleased with our results!

With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not

only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The

tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! To find out more about Grout Tech’s services or for a free estimate call BJ at 727-768-6828.
