Celebrate the Season at the 2015 Holiday Lights in the Gardens The Florida Botanical Gardens’ Holiday Lights in the Gardens offers visitors the perfect way to experience the magic of the holiday season with family and friends. The event will be held from Friday, Nov. 27 through Thursday, Dec. 31, every evening from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thousands of brilliant and colorful twinkling lights illuminating the paths, plants and palms in the gardens, holidaythemed entertainment and bountiful good cheer await visitors around every bend of Pinellas County’s 35-acre botanical treasure. With more than 66,000 visitors last year, the holiday event continues to be a perennial favorite for residents and visitors of the Tampa Bay area. The main draw of the event is the more than three quarters of a million environmentally friendly LED and laser lights that transform the gardens into a holiday wonderland filled with favorite seasonal and Florida-style displays. Visitors will enjoy light displays that include alligators, dolphins, eagles, turtles, a parrot, herons, a pelican, owls, flamingos and a swan,

along with animated butterflies, hummingbirds and an animated train display lit with more than 1,250 LED lights. In addition, visitors will also be delighted by a large collection of decorated flora including holiday trees, flowers, roses, poinsettias and the beautiful palms and tropical foliage of the gardens wrapped and draped in glowing light. A wide variety of skilled volunteer entertainers will delight visitors with their talents, including ballet dance troupes and musicians performing jazz, bluegrass and folk, along with local choral groups. Food is available for sale each night and the Foundation will have a holiday gift cart in addition to the specialty items for sale at the Botanical Bounty gift shop. New this year, a lighted six-and-ahalf-foot tall snowman and his family will add to the holiday theme. Visits with Santa Claus will be held every night through Dec. 23. During the event, an up-to-date schedule of nightly entertainment will be available on the Florida Botanical Gardens’ website at www.flbg.org, or visitors can call the Holiday Lights hotline at

Let the Savings Begin! The Tampa Premium Outlets in Lutz is Now Open! By Julie Kanehl Tampa Premium Outlets is the long-awaited outlet mall that has Lutz and Wesley Chapel at the center of a lot of attention! Located at 2300 Grand Cypress Drive in Lutz, just off of S.R. 56 and west of I-75, its location is convenient to all of Tampa Bay. Tampa Premium Outlets opened its doors on October 29th at 10 a.m. to excited crowds, impressive lines and of course, a lot of great deals. Owned by The Simon Property Group, which owns retail properties in 37 states and Puerto Rico, Tampa Premium Outlets has a lot of experience designing crowd-pleasing retail centers like this one. Their Grand Opening event included music, fireworks, and the opening of 103 stores, including popular brands like Coach, Nike Factory, Vera Bradley, Calvin Klein, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors. Anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, Tampa Premium Outlets is a 441,000sq.-ft. retail center that has more than

20 shoe stores, alone. Add in some fun dining options like Johnny Rockets (which will actually be opening on November 12th), a playground area for the kiddos, and savings that you just won’t find at other malls, and it’s no surprise that people are flocking to the new shopping center in droves! Grand Opening Success! The main courtyard at Tampa Premium Outlets was abuzz throughout the day with live entertainment, contests and giveaways, and even stilt walkers made the rounds as many guests lined up at their favorite stores, eager to be one of the first ones in the door. Many of the stores offered gifts to the first 100 people inside, like Helzberg Diamonds, who offered a free pearl bracelet and extra savings to their first customers. There was a lot of excitement for kids of all ages at the Disney Outlet Store, as they gave away special edition Mickey ears to their first paying customers while supplies lasted. While many retailers used

coupons, giveaways and outlet exclusives to garner excitement, some stores just needed to be there – like the Coach store, which had a line snaking halfway down the corridor before the

like Swarovski simply sparkled, Kitchen Collection has you wanting to become a chef, and did I mention that there’s a Lindt Chocolate and an Auntie Anne’s? All the excitement and crowds aside, the employees of Tampa Premium Outlet and of the individual outlet stores were simply fantastic. Everyone was super-informative, helpful and while the mall was busy, it was

a pleasurable place to shop! I spoke to one local shopper who came to the Grand Opening with her mom and her two young children, she said, “I’ve gotten some great deals! I’m really happy we came. The lines to pay are long, but worth it.” She also said, “I really like that there are lots of areas to sit and rest between shopping!” Simon Properties did a great job of designing the shopping center to

Become a Tampa Premium Outlets VIP! The best news is that, while the opening weekend has come and gone, the savings will continue! It’s been printed that the savings at a Simon outlet mall like this one can be up to 65% or more than what you’d find at a regular store, which is great! But there’s a way to save even more. Become a VIP! As a Tampa Premium Outlets VIP, you have the opportunity to earn extra savings that aren’t made public! It’s totally free, and it’s easy to sign up on their website! One you sign up, you simply print your voucher and take it to guest relations to pick up your VIP Coupon Book, and let me

tell you, you’ll feel like a VIP, because these savings can be combined with the savings and discounts in the stores. Some examples include 10% off your entire purchase at Sketchers, $25 off your purchase of $100 or more at Vera Bradley and $15 off your purchase of $30 or more at Yankee Candle. This is just a fraction of the discounts! These savings last throughout the season, so get online, get your voucher and start racking up those savings! Tampa Premium Outlets is the perfect place to save money while shopping, and it’s also bringing a lot of jobs to the area as many of the retailers are still hiring! true Philadelphians eat them, or you want it made your own peculiar way the quality is never lacking. Owners Mike and Debbie Natoli truly enjoy providing great food and service to their neighbors. eateries in Philly many times to compare his to theirs, making sure his customers are getting authentic Philly taste. “The biggest compliment of all is when people get off the plane from Philadelphia and come straight here for our food,” says Mike. One customer, who calls himself Philly Joe says, “I’ve lived in Florida for 25 years and have tried a lot of socalled Philly cheesesteaks. This is by far the best I’ve had. The rolls are from Philly, the meat is from Philly. They make them big as well. What you get at Best of Philly would be considered double meat anywhere in Philly. I’m telling you they are packed. The best referral I can give you is that I have a friend that visits from Philly and he brings these cheesesteaks back home with him!!! How’s that for a testimonial? I’ve referred many people there and none have been disappointed. Take it from me, I was born and raised in Philly.” The perfect Philly cheesesteak starts with a soft, delicious roll and as any cheesesteak lover knows, the roll is

as important as the filling. The original Philly cheesesteak, as served in Philly, is either with or without onions. I like mine with mushrooms, peppers and onions. Mike says this is the Floridastyle cheesesteak, so I guess it makes sense that it’s this Florida girl’s favorite! You can choose from three kinds of cheese. Mike says most customers prefer white American, but provolone is available and even Cheese Whiz for those South Philadelphians! Hoagies, Wings & Hand-Cut Fries, OH MY! “People love our cheesesteaks so much that they rarely try anything else, but we have so many delicious choices on our menu,” says Mike. “I always try to encourage our regulars to try something new, but that is a hard battle to win once they have tasted our Philly!” In addition to the best Philly cheesesteaks around, Best of Philly Cheesesteak House has something else you’ll love too like the cold hoagies and hot sandwiches, bone-in wings,

boneless wings, burgers and a variety of appetizers. One of my favorite treats at Best of Philly Cheesesteak House has to be what I call the “gone-in-a-minute” hand-cut fries. They are a perfect side for any club sandwich or burger, or just on their own with a side of gravy or hot cheese. Yes, gravy for your French fries is the ultimate comfort food! Pair those fries with any one of the delicious burgers, hot sandwiches, cold subs or even a variety of appetizers and you’ve got yourself the perfect meal! TCBY Brings You the Country’s Best Yogurt! By Dara Tucker Jay and Patty Silar opened the first TCBY Self-Serve on the West Coast of Florida in Trinity and it has remained a favorite spot for cool treats for over four years since it first opened! The amazing taste makes it hard to believe the frozen yogurt is 96, 98 or 100 percent fat free. With the holidays here, there is no better time than now to swing by and get a delicious frozen yogurt for yourself, or one of TCBY’s new milkshakes! And if you want to make someone really happy, put a TCBY gift card in his or her stocking! Even better, if you purchase $25 in gift cards during the months of November and December you receive an additional $5 gift card free. TCBY, also known as “The Country’s Best Yogurt,” originally opened in 1981, and is the oldest frozen yogurt company in the United States. The company has high health and quality standards that appeal to Patti Silar who is a retired RN. Patti says, “TCBY takes pains to purchase products that are high quality. Fruit is sanitized to

18

meet TCBY requirements, and we don’t use frozen fruit because it turns to mush on your yogurt. Our fruit are in their own juices instead of syrup.” Jay Silar adds, “Our yogurts are kosher and Halal certified. We want to meet our customers’ needs.” TCBY’s yogurt is delicious, smooth and creamy. The possibilities of flavor combinations and toppings seem endless, but you many not have known it has great nutritional value, too. TCBY has super frozen yogurts (Super Fro-Yo), which is a new classification of frozen yogurt that sets a high standard for nutrition within the frozen yogurt industry. To qualify as a Super Fro-Yo, TCBY’s frozen yogurts meet or exceed (based on a 4 oz., 1/2 cup serving) having at least 3 grams of fiber, 7 types of live and active cultures, 4 grams of protein, and 20% daily value of vitamin D and calcium. The fiber and probiotics in TCBY yogurt help you feel satisfied and aid your body in digestion, boosting your general health. Vitamin D and calcium are also essential for bone and muscle health. The protein in TCBY yogurt contains amino acids that help proper muscle

They always went above-and-beyond to offer great customer service. We love our Trinity TCBY!” Trinity’s TCBY is bright and fun, with a textured wall that changes colors. Between the music, bright colors, and cheerful staff, Patti, Jay and Jenifer

have created an atmosphere that’s perfect for enjoying a treat. If you’re unsure which of the ten flavors you should try, don’t worry! An employee is happy to give you a sample. You don’t need to decide on just one flavor either. You can fill your 16 or 25 oz. cup with as little or as much as the cup can hold. Bananas are available to turn your frozen yogurt into a banana split. If you don’t like your flavors mixing, cup dividers can be used to separate them. The ten available flavors rotate or change periodically, but there is always a no-sugaradded option and a non-milk based option. For example, Silk™ coconut milk and Silk™ chocolate almond milk are the current non-dairy options available. In the upcoming months additional frozen yogurt flavors TCBY will be carrying include English toffee, blueberry, chocolate chip mint and apricot. After you dispense your frozen yogurt, head over to the topping bar, which has over 45 different toppings to choose from, including fresh fruit and crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. There are

plenty of kids’ favorites such as gummies and candy chocolate rocks. You can top it off with hot chocolate fudge or warm walnuts in a caramel sauce. It’s possible to come to TCBY every day of the month, and never put together a repeat combination of yogurt and toppings! Jay, Patti, and Jenifer are involved in several community projects and fundraisers including Taste of Trinity and Long Leaf Fall Festival. As active members of our community, you’ll spot the TCBY “car” around town, and at places such as the New Port Richey and Tarpon Springs Christmas Parades. Jenifer also works with local non-for-profit groups for spirit nights. For a set number of hours, a portion of the proceeds made on a designated night goes back to the school or church as a fundraiser. It’s fun and delicious way to earn money for your non-for-profit group. TCBY provides the Trinity area with a scrumptious and healthy yogurt shop that is perfect for taking the kids for a treat, birthday celebration, date night, or to take a pint from their freezer home to enjoy. When you go make sure to ask for a loyalty reward card that gives you 1 point for every dollar you spend, and after 30 points

you earn a $3 coupon. If you’re looking for gift that’s sure to be loved, purchase a TCBY gift card for any amount. TCBY of Trinity is located at 3140 Little Road in the Mitchell Ranch Plaza. They are open Mon. – Thurs., 12–9 p.m. and 12–10 p.m. on Fri. and Sat. Call (727) 3751177 for more information about spirit nights, and check out TCBY of Trinity’s Facebook page or website www.tcbytrinity.com for upcoming events and flavors.

The ToyMakers of East Lake’s Open House and Silent Auction was a Success! By Julie Kanehl The ToyMakers of East Lake are group of jolly elves of all ages that work together year round in their toyshop. Why? For the same reason that Santa’s elves do their work; the happy smile of a child. Of course, the ToyMakers of East Lake focus on children who may need a smile more than the average bear. They make and donate their handmade wooden toys to hospitals, fire stations and clinics all over Tampa Bay. Current President and Head ToyMaker, Bob Helms, said, “This year Toymakers of East Lake will serve over 12,000 children with hand-made wooden toys and contribute over 15,000 volunteer hours.” As a completely non-profit organization, the ToyMakers of East Lake hold an annual Open House and Silent Auction to raise money for their toyshop, and as always, it’s a great opportunity for people to learn how

There were hundreds of items in the silent auction, and there was quite a bit of excitement in the room! As the morning progressed, the auction sheets filled up quickly-and there was quite a bit of suspense at the close of the auction! At the end of the day, the community came out to support an amazing organization and to do a little holiday shopping at the same time. More than that, people met some incredible volunteers who put their hearts into this charity. Best of all, there were new volunteers signing up to join them. Bob Helms, said “It was quite a success! We had a 43 percent increase over last year.” It was thanks to the donations and contributions of so many local businesses and supporters that made this event the success that it was. Many local restaurants donated gift certificates, while large organizations and companies donated products, tickets,

experiences and more. Janet Helms, Vice President of ToyMakers of East Lake, said, “I very much appreciate the generosity and kindness of all the people who participated this year!” It’s not just Neighborhood News & Lifestyles that is in love with this great organization, in fact all of Tampa Bay has been getting excited about the great things that this organization does for little ones. Bob said, “We made the local news three times in the month of October which greatly increased the number of people familiar with our charity. ABC Action News subsequently ran a 90-second feature on our current activities on November 5th and 6th featuring our WWII Veteran, Thad Pollard, and some of the children we served recently at Tampa General Hospital. Last week we were contacted by Fox News in NYC and asked if we can fly to New York to appear on their morning show, Fox & Friends in a four-minute live segment. It’s very exciting for us!” If you would like to be a part of a wonderful organization that makes wooden, handmade toys year round for children in the hospital, please sign up as a volunteer for the Toymakers of East Lake! You don’t have to have any experience with woodworking, as they’ll teach you what you need to know. You may find that you make more than a toy in that workshop – you may find that you make some of the best friends you’ve ever had. LOCAL 15 YEAR OLD STARTS A NON-PROFIT AND JOINS FORCES WITH CORPORATE CONFERENCE COMPANY TO HELP THOSE IN NEED

Sparkle Power and IQPC Exchange team up to benefit Ronald McDonald House After multiple stays in the hospital, a local 15-year-old girl has used her experience to recognize a need of others. While at the hospital, Caitlin Shannon found herself dreading long days in the hospital awaiting tests and procedures and thought that many other children in her position, or worse, may experience the same feeling. When thinking about her experience, Caitlin, the oldest of four siblings, says, “When I was 13, I was in and out of the hospital and surgery centers for two years. It gave me an amazing outlook.” Caitlin has put her thoughts into action. While most 15-year-old girls are busy trying to take the perfect selfie, Caitlin is helping others. With the support of her family, Caitlin has created a charity called Sparkle Power. The name is significant because “sparkle” represents goodies that brighten a patient’s day and “power” represents the power of a positive

22

attitude to help a patient recover faster. Through Sparkle Power, Caitlin brings joy to children that find themselves hospitalized for extended periods of time by bringing them ‘care packages’, that she simply calls Sparkle Power Boxes. A Sparkle Power Box consists of items to banish hospital room boredom and includes things like coloring books, crayons and even socks for cold hospital rooms. Her inspiration for the boxes came from little things she received while in the hospital. She recalls, “When I would get a small gift, like Chapstick, a personal comfort item, or something small like we have

Caitlin Shannon (left) is a remarkable teenager who started the Sparkle Power charity to boost the spirits of children who are receiving medical treatment at hospitals in the Sparkle Power goodie bags, it really brightens your day.” Caitlin’s mom, Brooke Shannon, is in awe of her daughter’s level of philanthropy. When asked about Caitlin’s inspiration to create Sparkle Power, Brooke said, “It really touched her heart when she saw other children

alone, bored or really not having anything to get them through the day and she had her siblings and my husband and I to visit and bring little goodies, but she noticed that some of the other children in the hospital would be lonely and sad. She thought maybe, once I’m feeling better, she

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

could do something to help brighten these kids’ days and maybe that would help them recover a little faster. That’s what prompted her to come up with her charity. Now that she’s feeling better, she wants to give back to her community.” One look at this amazing young lady’s charity Instagram account, @sparklepoweroffical, and even the coldest heart will begin to melt. Viewers are met with the smiling faces of children that Caitlin has helped and the stories of hope and courage that each child possesses. It is clear to see that Caitlin has a huge heart and cares deeply for each and every child she helps. Since security protocols at some hospitals make it difficult to deliver the packages directly to patients, Ronald McDonald House charities seemed like the perfect way to get the care packages in the hands of the families. Ronald McDonald House provides no cost housing to families with children that are long term or frequent patients at nearby hospitals. Moved by Caitlin’s dedication to helping others, a corporate conference company called IQPC Exchange took notice of Sparkle Power. While its parent company, IQPC, is a worldwide

business, IQPC Exchange itself only has two offices in the United States, including New York and one here in Tampa. The company plans and hosts multiple nationwide conferences for executives and thought leaders from Fortune 1000 companies. IQPC Exchange has now joined forces with Sparkle Power to help children and their families with extended hospital stays. To take it a step further, IQPC Exchange has expanded the care packages to include items for not only the patients, but for the families as well. Items include non-perishable food items, toys for siblings, toiletries and more. IQPC Exchange has placed Jessica Yeshaiek in a lead position of the efforts and she could not be more thrilled. Jessica’s college sorority was heavily involved with RMH and she’s ecstatic to be involved with such an incredible mix of caring organizations. IQPC Exchange has also begun bringing the items to the conferences and getting the attending executives onboard with participating in creating the packages to give to the families. One of the attendees tweeted a photo of the packages and said how much he loved being a part of the ‘social responsibility’.

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

On IQPC Exchange’s involvement Yeshaiek said, “It is really heartwarming for us to have a chance to give back to the Tampa Bay community. We are proud to be part of an initiative to support Sparkle Power and Ronald McDonald House by assembling the Sparkle Power goodie bags at IQPC events around the country, then delivering them to The Ronald McDonald House to give to deserving families.” With IQPC Exchange’s help, Caitlin and Sparkle Power are able to reach more families in need. Sparkle

Power is incorporated and has filed its application to be recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit company. If you are interested in interviewing Caitlin or IQPC Exchange, please join us when we deliver the next set of care packages to RMH. The drop off is scheduled to occur on Friday, October 9th. If you would like more information on Sparkle Power, IQPC Exchange or ways to get involved please contact Kristen Schipfer via phone: 813-658-2584 or email: Kristen.Schipfer@iqpc.com.

“Wendy Fit” Continued from page 1 Wendy Can Help You Be Fit! Wendy first opened her studio in Tampa in 2005, and then moved to the East Lake area in 2013. Since then, she has not only offered traditional yoga and Pilates classes for varying levels of ability, but has added elements like aerial yoga classes, meditation and healing as well as the relatively new style of Buti Yoga™, which combines elements of yoga, tribal dancing and abdominal toning. Wendy also welcomes special guests on a regular basis who offer workshops on a variety of fitness and meditative styles. If you’re just beginning, Wendy suggests that you sign up for a oneon-one session! This is a great way to learn about yoga and Pilates without the pressures of fitting into a group scenario, and more importantly it gives you the chance to focus on yourself, your body and your own level of fitness. Then, when you’re comfortable, you can walk into class ready for a safe and successful experience. Popular for gathering people to-

She also helps to coordinate a yoga cruise each year, where she offers an incredible line up of yoga classes at sea. Wendy even offers classes and camps for kids and says, “We have options for people of all ages and abilities.” Wendy Fit Yoga & Pilates is a Certified 200-ryt Yoga Alliance school for teachers wanting to get nationally certified. Wendy has been training teachers for the past 20 years and became a nationally recognized school in 2006. Debbie Baumgart said, “No matter what level you’re at, you will fit right in! Wendy is fabulous and she offers a variety of classes. Stop missing out, take a class! I’ve been going to her for seven years!” One client said, “I came all the way from PA and Wendy’s Power Yoga class and Kaya’s Aerial class made it more than worth it!”

as, “a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement.” Pilates isn’t a fad, it’s a way of exercising and becoming fit despite setbacks, despite having injuries or scoliosis. In fact, Wendy told me that it was originally designed for rehabilitation purposes! When done correctly, it’s a wonderful way to learn where your body is currently with regard to balance and ability. Wendy says, “I really encourage people to come in and have a oneon-one lesson with myself or one of our certified personal trainers.” She explains, “It’s so that you can see where your body fits, and become comfortable with the equipment. Pilates is excellent for people who

have thought that they can’t be fit because of their pain. But you can, and Pilates can help everyone!” No Contracts at Wendy Fit! There are no contracts at Wendy Fit.
