Massage is globally recognized as a beneficial therapeutic treatment that offers stress relief and aids in relaxation by helping to reduce anxiety, but more than that, therapeutic massage helps in healing. Massage is clinically proven to improve circulation, range of motion and flexibility, while helping to relieve pain, reduce blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and shorten healing time after an injury. Because of these many benefits, more and more physicians are prescribing massage as a way to help patients to return to their jobs after work-related injuries, and the great news for local patients is that Barkdoll Massage Therapy recently

began accepting Federal Worker’s Comp patients in the Tampa Bay Area. Another great service that many employers are utilizing as a way to show their appreciation to employees is Barkdoll Massage Therapy’s Corporate Seated Massage! Whatever your reason for wanting a massage, Barkdoll Massage Therapy makes it easy, affordable, and best of all, Barkdoll comes to you. Karla Barkdoll has been a licensed professional massage therapist since 2001, and her unique mobile massage business takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bringing therapeutic massage services right to you – in your own comfortable space. CARES services improve the quality of life for seniors and caregivers, helping our elderly to stay at home, stay independent, stay connected and informed. According to the FL Dept. of Elder Affairs, Pasco County Population Profile Report, 27.7% of Pasco County’s total population is over the age of 60 with 14.426, or 2.9% of the population being 85+ years of age. There are many elderly whom without CARES services would be facing institutional placement; and those numbers are growing. The population of Pasco County is over 497,000 people. If half of our residents would donate one dollar each (that’s only $1), CARES could greatly enhance the services provided to caregivers and our vulnerable elderly. Will you be a Santa to seniors? Build a toy with Santa at MOSI It looks like too many boys and girls have been good this year, because Santa is running out of room at the North Pole and he’s adding an extra Santa’s Workshop at the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) in Tampa. He needs your help to make sure his elves can make all of the toys they’ll need for this holiday season. Included with MOSI admission, kids can come to the Idea Zone® creativity lab and make real toys to take home and give to family and friends. Santa’s Workshop at MOSI starts on “Black Friday,” November 25, 2016 and continues through January 3, 2017. Santa himself will visit the workshop during the first three weekends in December (see below for details). Idea Zone® at MOSI will become a Minecraft-inspired winter wonderland, complete with a cubic Christmas tree and Minecraft model train. With help from MOSI’s elftrained staff, guests can get hands-on with: • Cardboard creatures – Transform ordinary boxes into real moving machines and make anything from a flapping bird to a dancing elephant. • Retro toy-building classes Spark your imagination and learn woodworking skills as you saw, sand, and hammer toy trains, cars, and other playful inventions. • Santa Sleuths - MOSI’s Elf on a Shelf has raided MOSI’s secret stocking full of 3D-printed toys. We’re looking for a few good Santa Sleuths to join in our reindeer game and help find the lost toys hidden around MOSI. • Live science shows - MOSI’s STEAMpunks science educators have

a toy-box full of science demonstrations to go along with the holiday. Santa Claus will be dropping by his workshop to share pointers and holiday cheer with his toy-making helpers. Come take a photo with Santa Claus at MOSI from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 3rd. Santa will be back at MOSI for brief 90-minute visits on Dec. 4, 10, 11, 17, and 18. “To me, the best kind of gift is a gift you make yourself – especially if you’re a kid. Santa’s Workshop at MOSI gives kids the chance to show their creative sides and make something memorable and unique for a friend or family member, instead of only choosing a gift off a shelf,” said Molly Demeulenaere, MOSI President & CEO. No reservations are necessary and hands-on Santa’s Workshop activities are included with MOSI general admission. MOSI is open every Tuesday through Sunday and is closed seasonally on some Mondays; visit mosi.org for daily hours.

¡CUATRO Restaurant & Bar at TPC Tampa Bay! Fresh, Seasonal Chef Creations – Open to the Public! By Katie Thomas TPC Tampa Bay is considered one of the most beautiful and exciting 18-hole resort golf courses in Florida. The gorgeous landscaping that winds through natural wetlands, cypress trees, lagoons, oaks and abundant wildlife areas is the perfect backdrop for a top-rated round of golf. TPC Tampa Bay’s masterful design provides a spectacular place for golfers, but also holds a gem of a restaurant that is open to the public and a delight to enjoy. ¡CUATRO Restaurant & Bar at TPC Tampa Bay is a modern restaurant, designed to bring people together to enjoy the fresh seasonal flavors curated by Executive Chef Benjamin Clark. Offering outstanding lush views of the course and delectable culinary creations, ¡CUATRO ignites all the senses with unexpected flavors in classic dishes that are made with Florida’s finest ingredients!

10

¡CUATRO’s menu is as impressive as its atmosphere, which includes a luxurious marble bar, mid-century modern design, and stunning views. Menu items are top-notch! Chef Ben trains his staff to make superb fare from scratch with seasonal ingredients that are fresh from Florida. “I was hired as ¡CUATRO’s Executive Chef last October and began diligently working on making our menu a true culinary experience. I changed the menu three or four times to get it to meet my standards and I still work on it weekly to provide the freshest inseason ingredients available. We take tips from our customers and staff to provide our guests with what they love.” Ben has ingrained in his staff a mindset that meets his own – his philosophy for creating masterful food aligns with what his father taught him as a kid. “My dad always taught me to do what I love and put passion into my work. I teach my staff that putting

Ben shares, “I took a liking to cooking at a young age. My grandmother was Italian - she was always cooking something delicious. My mother and father also loved to cook, so I spent a lot of time with them as a family in our kitchen.” Ben played baseball in college, but after tearing his shoulder, he reevaluated his career plans and decided to enroll in the culinary program at The Art Institute of Tampa. Ben’s first internship was with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he cooked on a mass scale for luxury suites. His internship afforded him the opportunity to cook quality food on a large scale, as well as work for private parties and as a private chef. After graduating and finishing his first internship, Ben worked at Cafe DuFrain on Harbour Island in Tampa. This was his first experience in making all menu items entirely from scratch. While at Cafe DuFrain, Ben gained invaluable experience training under the guidance of Executive Chef Ferrell Alvarez, who now runs Rooster & Till in Seminole Heights. “Ferrell is one of the most talented chefs I have ever met. He taught me that putting a little bit of extra love into each dish goes a long

way. I learned a lot from him and probably owe most of my culinary career to him. He taught me to make everything in-house, which I have implemented at ¡CUATRO. From making our own pickling brine and cheeses to smoking all our meats in house – taking the extra time to create fresh items that are handcrafted by our team makes all the difference in flavor for our guests.” “I get asked a lot what kind of restaurant we are. I don’t want to pigeonhole us into a group, so I tell people that we make really good food with the freshest available ingredients and do our best to perfect our items by making as much as possible in house. We are so lucky to live in an area where we have some of the freshest providers. From fresh seafood straight from the Gulf to locally grown vegetables from small Florida farms – our local vendors are leaps and bounds better than any importers.” The kitchen team at ¡CUATRO goes above-and-beyond when it comes to cooking, plating and serving food. They smoke their own brisket for chili, brine their corned beef, cure their own bacon, smoke all their BBQ, make all soups and dressings from scratch in-house and even make their

They are currently perfecting their in-house mozzarella, so keep an eye out for made-from-scratch mozzarella dishes soon to come on the menu! When your chef takes four days to turn pork belly into bacon in his very own in-house smoker, you know the quality is stellar! Chef Ben’s menu is his life’s work, and as his father taught him, he puts every ounce of passion and love into each dish that comes out of ¡CUATRO’s kitchen, so guests always receive the best. In addition to the restaurant and bar menu, Chef Ben has updated the banquet menu for large events held at TPC Tampa Bay and for catering. Ben says, “Our banquet menu is phenomenal and 99% of the time, I work one on one with our customers to customize the banquet menu selection to their liking. When someone calls about a banquet or private dinner, I tell them they can get ideas off the website, but I work with them through email to come to a finalization that they really love and suits their tastes.” ¡CUATRO Restaurant & Bar is a family friendly neighborhood locale

Shop Bella Home Market and Find What You Love! By Kim Thomas When I read about Bella Home Market in last month’s issue of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles, I couldn’t wait to stop by the store, which is located on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard in Lutz. This shop is amazing! It was even better than I’d imagined and the boutique style shopping with affordable prices is exactly what I was hoping for! Jennifer Wagner, who co-owns the store with her daughter Sophia, said, “We have customers come in who say they have seen stores similar to ours in South Tampa and other locations, but that the pricing in other stores is much higher.” Not only does Bella Home Market have ever-changing merchandise due to their awesome selection and great prices; it is right here in your own neighborhood so you don’t have to fight traffic to find something fabulous! I walked in Bella Home Market thinking I may find a few gifts for the holidays, but ended up sprucing up my living room. I absolutely love the artwork I purchased - two coordinat-

ing prints on glass featuring Cranes that looked like “old Florida” to me. Bella Home Market has these amazing giant hanging Edison-style lights with at least six different bulb styles and I had to have one! You can hang them from the ceiling or the wall, they last for 3,000 hours, and Bella also sells the hooks for hanging. It is the perfect accent lighting to showcase the Crane artwork and everyone who has seen my new light wants one so I will be returning to buy a few for gifts! There were so many unique candle holders and candles that it was hard to choose, but I absolutely LOVE my choice – a set of large domed candle holders made with copper and smoked glass that look as if they are antique though they aren’t, and Bella has these great large pear shaped candles that look beautiful under the domed glass! I found a

home, or find the perfect hostess gift or Christmas gift, you’ll love the selection at Bella Home Market. It is the kind of store where your head is on swivel because there are so many fun items to see. “We have many people

tell us that they have to walk through the store several times to see everything,” says Jennifer. There are many accent tables and shelves, from small to large, and some of my favorites are the pieces made from reclaimed wood and metal. I love the modern-vintage style as well as the rustic industrial look, and Bella Home Market has both! And if you love to refurbish furniture yourself, they carry the entire line (42 colors!) of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint. The eclectic mix of vintage, brand new, and repurposed items includes paintings, sculptures, and pottery made by local artists and Fair Trade Merchants. Jennifer and Sophia visit local craft fairs looking for new and upcoming artisans and scour national markets throughout the year, and they are always interested in finding more local artists to feature. When you visit Bella Home Market, it is clear that the owners have an eye for interior design. I jokingly said to Jennifer, “Can I just take you home with me so you can show me what to do?” And yes! That is possible! Jennifer also does interior design work! And she offers her interior design clients a 15% discount if they buy

items from Bella Home Market. A quick and easy gift that everyone will love is a gift card from Bella Home Market! There are so many wonderful items to choose from that the recipient of a gift card will be delighted with the amazing array of merchandise at Bella Home Market, and they’ll love the fun and relaxed shopping experience. ToyMakers Make Handmade Toys for Children Who Could Use A Smile! By Julie Kanehl What would you do to bring joy to a child? One who is scared, hurt, sick or lost? It may seem hard to believe, but right here in the Tampa Bay Area, there are children in hospitals, orphanages and situations where smiles don’t come very easily. In fact, the volunteers at ToyMakers of East Lake have given away more than 13,000 handcrafted wooden toys and cars in 2016 alone! Volunteers give many of the toys directly to children in Tampa Bay Area hospitals, while others are donated to organizations and first responders with the goal of giving a smile to the children who need one most. It may seem like a simple gesture, a handmade car to a child, but a toy like this is far more than a carved piece of wood, painted tires that spin, and a splash of paint. These cars remind children to hope, to dream, and to laugh. ToyMakers of East Lake is a non-

profit organization made up of men and women like me and you who donate a few hours a week to create toys that are safe enough for little fingers, clean enough for hospital environments, and fast enough to make a child giggle with glee. Famous for their “Batmobiles” and “Daisy Racers” they make wooden toys of all kinds. Their reward? A simple smile. I’ll Trade You a Toy For a Smile! There’s just something special about these toys and cars. You can’t buy cars like these at the store. These cars are sturdy and well made, solid and fast. Frankly, they put the cars at the store to shame. Perhaps they don’t have the bells and whistles…They don’t link up to your phone via Bluetooth or take pictures at 30 feet up, but they have something that children crave: They’re handmade with love. They also make walking toys (a penguin and a duck). Little ones love to walk them around, and for kids in the hospital, these walking toys are a huge

success, for if you ask a child to do their therapyforget it, but if you tell them they’re allowed to walk their penguin down the hall, they’re out of there and doing their therapy without realizing it. success, as the public came out to support a great cause and to do some shopping! The silent auction featured hundreds of items, including handmade toys, gift cards to local restaurants, tickets to local museums and theme parks, and one-of-a-kind works of art. There was a beautiful buffet, opportunities to tour the workshop, and for the children, a place to race their brand new cars, as the ToyMakers of East Lake were kind enough to give free cars to the children in attendance. Chris said, “We love going to visit the ToyMakers of East Lake every year!” Volunteers are enjoying the colorful new workroom at ToyMakers Auction, which is held each November. At the most recent ToyMakers of East Lake Open House and Silent Auction, the East Lake Fire Department was on hand to take children and families on a ride in their antique fire truck! The ToyMakers have helped to restore the benches on the antique fire truck, which is a good thing, as Santa himself brings toys and tidings of good cheer to little ones all over town! Their handmade toys have been delivered across the U.S. and as far as Haiti through mission trips, so it’s safe to say that this small charity, an Outreach Mission of East Lake United Methodist Church, is having an effect

on children all over the world. This holiday season, the CSX Corporation will be handing out more than 500 ToyMakers of East Lake toys from their famous Santa Train, which has run through the Appalachians for the past 70 years, giving supplies, food, clothing, and toys to the people who live there. Current ToyMakers of East Lake President and longtime volunteer, Bob Helms, stated, “We feel very honored that CSX would request our toys to be distributed on their Santa Train. Seeing as how they only distribute about 5000 toys, 10% of the toys they give out will be from our workshop. We’re pretty excited about that.” If you’d like to support this amazing charity, please consider donating your time! ToyMakers of East Lake is always looking for volunteers to cut out the patterns, sand the toys, paint the wheels, even to simply bag up the toys and count them for distribution. You certainly don’t have to be a carpenter to help build toys at ToyMakers of East Lake! Volunteers of all ages and talents are appreciated, and ToyMakers is happy to work with students who need volunteer hours through

Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. You may find that when you join ToyMakers of East Lake, you’ll find yourself surrounded by new friends, and a renewed sense of wonder in the good workings of the world. That’s what happens when you work for a good cause, it renews your spirit and your faith. The ToyMakers of East Lake have a workshop is located at 2690 Tanglewood Trail in Palm Harbor, FL 34685, behind the East Lake United Methodist Church. If you would like to donate, sponsor or volunteer, visit the website, www.toymakersofeastlake.org or you may email them at toys@toymakersofeastlake.org.

Trinity Family Physicians Recognizes Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Winner Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached By Julie Kanehl Local physicians, Stephanie Eldridge, MD and Amir Shirmohammad, MD are a husband and wife team who started Trinity Family Physicians many years ago with the sole purpose of making a difference in the lives of the families they treated. Trinity Family Physicians is now a thriving and busy practice that hundreds of families turn to when they need medical care. Growing up here and now raising their own family here, the doctors at Trinity Family Physicians are heavily involved in the community, and they wanted to create a way to recognize local individuals who make a positive impact on the Tampa Bay Area, so they developed the Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award. Trinity Family Physicians proudly announces that the next Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award winner is Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached, a charity in every sense of the word.

18

No Strings Attached is a completely non-profit organization that gives to those in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings without receiving a single thing in return, hence the name, No Strings Attached. And The Winner Is: Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached Andre Kirwan, MBA, and Vice President of The Bank of Tampa is considered a Superman by many, but he’d probably describe himself more as a Clark Kent, or even more likely, as just “Pastor Kirwan.” A Youth Pastor at MorningStar Church, Kirwan is humble, giving, inspiring and sincere. In his spare time, he coaches football at Berkeley Prep, is President of the Warrick Dunn Foundation, and of course, he is 100 percent devoted to No Strings Attached, which collects and donates thousands of items to homeless people on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day. Every year, No Strings Attached donates things that people in our community truly

Andre Kirwan helps to distribute clothing to those in need through No Strings Attached charity need: Socks, coats, clothes, shoes, underpants, and prayer – a lot of prayer. Kirwan says, “Family is first for me. My brother, sister, mom and dad paved the way for me,” He adds, “God has wired me to realize that it’s not about me. Instead, I want to leave

a legacy of the heart, and I try to leave everything I touch a little bit better.” When interviewing Kirwan for this article, he deflected any praise toward God and to his parents, who worked hard and set an example for him. His father worked in the train

and airline food service industry to put himself through medical school, and his mother worked as a nurse. Together they worked hard to provide for their family, and they were able to put Kirwan into private school at Academy of Holy Names in Tampa, then Jesuit High School, and eventually Stanford University. Originally intending to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a doctor, Kirwan found himself heavily recruited to play football, which he did professionally in the Canadian Football League for eight years. After he retired from football, he went into banking as a way of helping people. He recently earned his MBA from USF, and is de-

serving of this award for his true dedication and commitment to others. No Strings Attached Truly Makes a Difference in Tampa Bay No Strings Attached was born nearly a decade ago, when Kirwan woke up overcome by the realization that he had blessings in spades that many others didn’t have. That November morning, he received a calling to give to others what many took for granted, so he emptied his closets, called his friends and asked them to do the same. His vision didn’t involve money; it involved actually getting out there into the community and giving – pure and simple.

“I realized that we were forgetting traditional values. We live among so much surplus,” says Kirwan. “So, I decided to put my time where my mouth is, and spend time with these people in their circumstances, roll up my sleeves and look these people in the eye, sit down and listen to them, then give them what I can.” Together with his network of friends and family through the many organizations that he worked with, No Strings Attached began to make a difference in the community. Kirwan talks of hugs he received from people who were down on their luck, people who hadn’t had a clean shirt, or even a clean pair of underwear for so long. These are the things that we take for granted; yet, there are people in our community who view these things as blessings and privileges. Kirwan says, “Last year we surpassed 40,000 items donated between Thanksgiving and Christmas and had over 70 volunteers that helped us serve a record 500 plus recipients on Christmas morning alone! We have come a long way from year one, 2007, when 1,448 items were distributed. Together, we have reached new heights, and every single item donated matters and will go to good use. No donation amount is too large or too small.” In 2012, Kirwan lost his good friend and right-hand-man in this ministry, Dr. Neal Sayers. Sayers collected donations all-year-round at his office, and his motto was “Go big or go home, baby.” When he brought his motto to No Strings Attached, more and more people benefited. His legacy now lives on through his children, who come out each year to support the homeless. For Kirwan, his loss cuts deep, but through his life and even his passing, more and more people have come out to answer the call of the needy and joined forces with No Strings Attached. Partnering with other ministries

in the area, such as Dressed for Success (which helps men and women find clothing suitable for job interviews), Trinity Café, Hyde Park United Methodist, Open Arms, True Holiness Church, Martha Shepley, and The Prince of Peace Ministry, no suitable donation goes to waste. Anything that is left over is donated or kept for the next giveaway. If you would like to support this great organization through your donation of items, resources or simply your time, visit www.nosacares.org and become part of the difference in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge would like to take this opportunity to thank Andre for his hard work and dedication. Trinity Family Physicians hopes that this story inspires others in our community to pursue their passion and answer their own calling to help make our community better by Making a Difference in Tampa Bay! Trinity Family Physicians has become a dedicated site to drop off clothing and other items for Andre Kirwan and No Strings Attached. Dr. Shirmo says, “We will collect items for the entire month of November and December until we close for the Christmas Holidays. We will continue to do this annually and help Andre and his charity Make a Difference in Tampa Bay!” Nominate Someone for the Next “Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award” Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award will continue to honor individuals who make a difference. If you know someone who makes a difference in the lives of others in Tampa Bay, Trinity Family Physicians and Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles want to hear from you! Though competition is certainly part of the focus at Dance Extreme Academy, and the level of instruction from the teachers on staff is exceptional, there are many students who dance just because they love to dance and perform. In December, the Dance Extreme Academy students will have a chance to perform The Nutcracker for the first time since the studio opened nearly seven years ago. Parents, students, teachers, and the owner of Dance Extreme Academy, Darlene Jones, and Dance Program Director Julie Walek, are all very excited about the upcoming performance of The Nutcracker, which is being co-produced with The Center for the Arts at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey. Dance Extreme Academy’s Ballet Director Laren Cavicchio is excited to be co-directing The Nutcracker, which will be held at the River Ridge High School auditorium on Saturday, December 17th at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Decem-

ber 18th at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the event, or you can check Dance Extreme Academy’s Facebook page or website (danceextremeacademy.com) or the CFA website (centerfortheartsriverridge.com) to find out when tickets will be available for advance purchase. Quality Dance Education Dance Extreme Academy is focused on providing a warm, family friendly atmosphere where students receive a quality dance education, and where, if desired, they can foster their talents to take them into professional dance careers and many students have been able to do that. DEA’s mission states: “Our mission is to provide a community-oriented dance program that attracts students of all levels and ages and challenges their abilities in a safe and effective manner to build stronger, well-rounded dancers. We are committed to fostering a safe and fun environment where each student

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

is treated like an individual while learning the importance of working in a group setting. We also offer a strong curriculum for the serious dancer who is looking to compete locally or nationally, or make dance their career.” Students really enjoy learning from their dance teachers, and both Darlene and Julie feel that it is very important that the students have consistency with the same teacher every week. By working with the same students, and students learning from the same teachers, relationships are forged, but not only that, Julie says, “Being consistently with the kids enables the teachers to learn each students’ strengths and weaknesses, and the teachers are better able to help them. Our weekly classes focus on technique and on what the students need to improve on. Our main focus is giving our students the best dance education possible.” Dance Extreme Academy has twelve dance educators on staff. Julie says, “We have an amazing, highly ed-

ucated staff that is committed to our students.” Assistant Dance Program Director Martha Estrada says, “We have had students transfer from other schools whose parents mention that they are impressed with the versatility of the curriculum here. Our students have a good understanding of the fundamentals of dance.” Martha adds that there are plenty of opportunities for students to get out of their comfort zones and improve on retaining choreography through the master classes that Dance Extreme Academy offers. In the past, they have had master classes taught by the professional dancers from the hit TV show, So You Think You Can Dance? This month, the studio is holding a Master Dance Class focused on Hip Hop with Rikkidawn Cooper, who won 1st place at the World of Dance and who appeared on America’s Got Talent, and LarsEric Rouville Brown II, who has appeared on So You Think You Can Dance?, MTV and VH1. Upcoming in March, there will be a Contemporary Workshop and Dance Extreme

Academy is currently working on bringing in some high-profile dancers to instruct. Other master classes planned for the 2017 year will bring in talented Broadway show dancers from Cabaret and Wicked. Dance Extreme Academy’s technique-based curriculum allows their students to reach their highest potential by guiding them and exposing them to dance opportunities both inside and outside the studio. Many of Dance Extreme Academy’s students excel to professional levels. Emma Meyers, 16, loves her tap dance instructor at Dance Extreme Academy, Cathy Scavelli, who has helped Emma to fine tune her natural talent to become the only dancer from Florida to make the “Olympics of Tap Dancing,” the World Tap Dance Competitions held this December in Germany. (Read Emma’s story on page 40). Former students are excelling in higher education and dance from the education they received at Dance Extreme Academy: Avery Rizzotto made the USF Dance Team;

Mallory Reiger was accepted into and graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy; Megan Fuhrman made it onto the Rukus Crew in Orlando and teaches open classes at the University of Central Florida, where she attends college; Catalina Estrada now works seasonally as a dancer at Busch Gardens, and she was on the Final Boss Crew and comanages the female Hip Hop crew Edge, from Tampa; Patrick Brown performs for Universal Studios, dances seasonally at Busch Gardens, and is well recognized in the Tampa Bay Hip Hop community. Over the past six and a half years, Dance Extreme Academy’s students have been accepted and some have earned scholarships to prestigious schools such as the Joffrey Ballet School Jazz & Contemporary Intensive, the Alvin Ailey Intensive in New York City, and the American Ballet Theater Intensive. It’s not too late to register for classes, Dance Extreme still has openings for both boys and girls, so come on by, meet Darlene, Julie, Martha and the rest of the staff at Dance Extreme Academy. Karla and her licensed massage therapists take the time to learn about their clients and any physical discomfort or problems they are having, so they can create a therapeutic massage protocol that will be most beneficial to each client. Their goal is to make sure that massage makes a difference in your life. Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a range of affordable massage therapy modalities. Swedish Massage is designed to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and reduce stress, and many find that this massage is a great start to begin therapeutic treatment. Warm Stone Therapy, which is

26

the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage, is a great method used to dissolve muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Deep Tissue Massage is best for targeting specific areas to help with pain and inflammation, and this method is often used to help control chronic pain. This massage technique is perfect for those muscles that tense up while typing, driving or doing repetitive work. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Sports and Injury Rehab Massage combines the benefits of deep tissue massage with stretching, and can actually increase range of motion in joints. This type of massage is beneficial to those recovering from all kinds of injuries, whether sports-related, workrelated or from a car accident. Many times, Karla will use a combination of massage modalities for optimal results. day every week and the staff loves it! It has had such a positive impact that my wife adopted Barkdoll Massage for her staff at State Farm as well.” Lori Meister shares, “During our first annual Wellness Fair at Vology we were thrilled to offer chair massages to all of our employees. It is such a great way to reward our employees and give them some much needed stress relief! Many of us forget how much time we spend sitting at our desks hunched over the computer, and don’t realize how much tension we carry. Just 10 minutes in the chair massage chair and you can feel the tension getting released from your neck and back. The team from Barkdoll Massage Therapy was wonderful and we will be using their services again.” Been Injured at Work? According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 over 3 million private industry and government workers sustained on the job injuries. Barkdoll Massage Therapy noticed this trend and has shifted their focus to assist injured employees in their recovery, and now proudly accepts Federal Worker’s Comp patients. They also accept State

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Workers’ Comp patients as long as the insurance carrier for the Workers’ Comp claim approves the therapy. This is great news for those who have been prescribed massage therapy for a work-related injury. If you are a Federal employee that has sustained an on the job injury and get benefits under FECA (Federal Employees Compensation Act), and have an approved claim with OWCP (Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs), Barkdoll Massage Therapy can get your therapy approved at no cost to you as long as you have a prescription from your treating physician and the massage therapy is medically necessary. They are able to do this because they have an OWCP expert on staff that has been working with Federal employees for over a decade. He is also able to answer any questions you might have regarding the claims process and can assist in representing you if that is what you need. Karla says, “Some people might wonder, ‘Why would I get massage therapy for an injury because massage is just a way to pamper yourself?’ Not only does therapeutic massage improve circulation, and increase range of motion and muscle flexibility, it also

has been proven to shorten recovery time and even heal injuries. Massage also is excellent for pain management, can help to eliminate headaches, and can even help prevent future injuries by helping the body strengthen.” Karla’s client Victor says, “Since starting my therapy with Karla of Barkdoll Massage Therapy, I have noticed a considerable decrease in the pain that I feel on a daily basis. Having chronic pain is not fun to deal with but I can now look forward to Karla coming twice a week since she and her staff got my therapy approved through OWCP (Office of Worker’s Compensation Programs). I did not realize the benefits that massage would have as I always thought massage was basically just a luxury to help you relax. Karla is great to work with because she keeps me informed about my progress that she notices from doing the massage.” Another client, Melissa, says, “Once Karla’s staff got my massage approved through OWCP she has been coming to my house twice a week. It is nice to not have to worry about going to her due to the chronic pain I suffer from. She is excellent at working with you to see you on your

schedule and always lets me know if she is running behind due to other appointments. She even has an OWCP expert on staff that can help with questions regarding OWCP and my claim. I highly recommend her as she is very experienced, always makes sure the technique she is using is not causing any pain and always asks how I am feeling and where I need the most work done for that session. Overall, an excellent experience using her as my therapist.” Whether you want a massage just to relax and relieve stress or need it to recover from an injury, Barkdoll Massage Therapy and their team of therapists have you covered and will put your heath first. Remember, “Your Health is Your Wealth.” Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you.
