CareerSource Pasco Hernando Helps Return over $47.9 Million Back into the Community through Workforce Programs During the 2015/2016 program year, CareerSource Pasco Hernando had expended nearly $5.8 million on 4 programs in order to assist the local labor market. The investment returned over $47.9 million to the two counties region, measured by payroll gains. Each fiscal year CareerSource Pasco Hernando encourages local economic growth by expending several million dollars of federal revenue, as it provides labor exchange and training programs to the region. CareerSource Pasco Hernando conducted a data analysis and summary to gauge the labor exchange return on investment (ROI). In determining the ROI for the 2015/2016 fiscal year, a direct approach with two guidelines measured only wage gains and benefits saved, while keeping all assumptions in the conservative realm. The method led to a $8.34 return back into the local economy for each dollar expended. The programs have impacted the local community by creating greater local economic growth, and have

BE A SANTA FOR SENIORS A donation to CARES is a gift of help, hope and comfort for seniors living right here locally. Over the years, CARES has provided in-home and community services to more than 87,000 seniors in Pasco County. CARES services improve the quality of life for seniors and caregivers, helping our elderly to stay at home, stay independent, stay connected and informed. According to the FL Dept. of Elder Affairs, Pasco County Population Profile Report, 27.7% of Pasco County’s total population is over the age of 60 with 14.426, or 2.9% of the population being 85+ years of age. There are many elderly whom without CARES services would be facing institutional placement; and those numbers are growing. The population of Pasco County is over 497,000 people. If half of our residents would donate one dollar each (that’s only $1), CARES could greatly enhance the services provided to caregivers and our vulnerable elderly.

San Jose Mexican Restaurant Boasts Delicious Authentic Fare, A Vibrant Atmosphere and Excellent Value!

By Kim Thomas There is no need to drive across the county for the fresh and authentic taste of Mexico! Dine at San Jose Mexican Restaurant, located at Arbor Square just north of Land O’ Lakes High School on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. Celebrating its One-Year Anniversary this month, San Jose Mexican Restaurant gained popularity fast in the area due to neighbors telling neighbors about the consistently delicious food and great service! The perfect locale for lunch and dinner, it’s open seven days a week and the already affordable menu is made even better with San Jose’s specials. General manager Jeff has been there since day one and recalls the mad rush to get San Jose Mexican Restaurant open last November. “We were told that it would be January before we could open and then we got the call two weeks before Thanksgiving that we could open, so we made it happen!” For three years prior to managing the San Jose Mexican Restaurant in Land O’ Lakes, Jeff managed a sister restaurant, Vallarta’s in Wesley Chapel. “We have a lot of regulars and we’ve grown fast in our first year because many of the people from the surrounding neighborhoods like The Groves bring tell their friends and neighbors about us.” The open, airy space at San Jose Mexican Restaurant boasts vibrant and happy Mexican décor, and if you like to watch TV while you dine, there are six large flat screen TVs. But the TVs don’t take center stage, as the lovely sounds of a strumming guitar and Mexican music playing add to the great ambiance. It seems like a great place to host a party, and there is an awesome sombrero for the guest of

honor! Tuesday evenings feature a balloon artist, who is a big hit with families. And if you love listening to a live Mariachi band (who doesn’t!), plan to come on a Thursday evening to listen to live Mariachi from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The feast begins as soon as you sit down, when your table is presented with chips so crisp and salsa so fresh that writing about it makes me want some again! If you love guacamole, then order the Guacamole San Jose, which is AMAZING! The menu is expansive! From appetizers to a la Carte items and side orders, to salads, entrées and combos, you could eat here every day and never get bored. There are 26 lunch combos and 23 of them cost $7 or less! Now that is an affordable and filling lunch! There are seven different specialty tacos, six specialty quesadillas, six different enchilada dishes, and ten specialty burritos. Specialty dinner entrees feature dishes made with pork, chicken, steak and seafood. And the Fajitas are always a popular choice. They also have a delicious Angus burger or grilled chicken sandwich, or the Carne Asada (a Ribeye steak topped with grilled onions), if you want an All-American favorite. There are eight different steak entrées! On a recent visit, we shared a feast, but I have to admit that the San Jose Tossed Shrimp salad is so fresh and healthy tasting that I didn’t want to share! Molcajete is another delicious specialty that is a must-try. Served in a dish carved from volcanic stone, the Molcajete is a sizzling combination of steak, chicken and shrimp cooked with tomatoes, onions peppers, mushrooms and squash, and topped off with cheese and salsa. It is served with rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream,

guacamole, pico de gallo and flour tortillas – a feast in itself! The Speedy Gonzalez lunch combo, which features one taco and one enchilada with a choice of beans or rice, was delicious and an awesome deal at only $6! There are many more things on this menu that I can’t wait to try! Next trip the family is ordering the Chorizo Fundido and Ceviche appetizers, the Enchiladas Poblanas (comprised of three enchiladas – one chicken, one cheese and one potato enchilada in a Poblano pepper sauce,

served with rice and guacamole), and Mole Poblano, which is shredded chicken covered with Poblano sauce, served with rice, tortillas and guacamole salad. Authentic Mexican taste is easy to find at San Jose Mexican Restaurant! The sauces – Mole, Salsa Roja and Salsa Verde, Spicy Chile, and Poblano Pepper – make your dish even tastier! San Jose’s Super Specials! $1 Beef or Chicken Tacos Monday – Thursday, ALL DAY! You

can eat your fill of beef or chicken tacos super cheap on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and you can take them to go for just $1.25 each. These days are a taco lovers’ dream! Full Bar with Happy Hours, 11 AM – 7 PM, Every Day! San Jose Mexican Restaurant has a full bar stocked with premium liquors and they don’t just have Happy Hour, they have Happy HOURS, as in every

day from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. featuring 12-oz. margaritas for $4 and 32oz. margaritas for $9. All beers are $1 off and there is a great selection of domestic beer and imports including Cerveza Carta Blanca, Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis, and Negra Modelo. They have a Corona-rita, which customer Jay describes below, and a Michelado, which Jeff describes as a Mexican Bloody Mary because it’s

made with tomato juice, lime juice, and a Mexican beer. People love this Restaurant! Jay S. shares in his review, “Solid place! Great food, service was good, and their prices for tacos Mon-Thurs are crazy! $1 tacos! Yeah get 3 tacos for $3! Can’t beat that! I had beef and chicken fajitas and they were awesome! Also I had this Corona Rita thing. They take a margarita and place a bottle of Corona in it that empties into the margarita as you drink it. Genius! Bill was $78 for 4 of us and 3 of us had drinks.” Karrell M. writes, “Can’t beat $1 taco night. We come regularly because the whole family eats for under

$20. Initially, I wasn’t a fan, but we’ve been coming here weekly and I’ve become one. I also love the Valentina hot sauce they have, it’s flavorful without being too hot. I don’t drink alcohol but if I did I’d recommend their margaritas, they look tasty.” Note from author: I do drink margaritas and San Jose’s don’t just look tasty, they are tasty! San Jose Mexican Restaurant is located at Arbor Square, 7804 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. in Land O’ Lakes and is open seven days a week: Mon. – Thurs. from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fri. and Sat.; and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sun. Delivering World-Class Cancer Treatment in Pasco County A cancer diagnosis changes everything; it is, perhaps, the most feared diagnosis a doctor can pronounce. Any patient in that situation wants to be assured they have access to the most advanced treatments, delivered by a physician who is both experienced and compassionate. And it helps tremendously if treatment can be administered in a community setting, close to home, so the patient can be surrounded by family and friends. Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) has put together a network of expert, boardcertified physicians who bring world class cancer treatments to local communities, both large and small, across the state. With nearly 100 locations, FCS is the largest independent oncology/ hematology group in the United States. That status puts the practice on the leading edge of clinical trial research and gives FCS physicians access to the newest, most innovative treatments. “Our motto at Florida Cancer Specialists is ‘World class medicine and hometown care,’” says Dr. Jorge

Florida Cancer Specialists’ physicians, staff and corporate leaders celebrate the new PET:CT mobile unit in Pasco County Ayub, who practices in Hudson, Land O’ Lakes and New Port Richey. “This means that our patients do not have to travel to a large cancer center to find the most advanced treatments and clinical trials. They are able to find all of that right here in Pasco County, without leaving their homes.” According to Dr. Kapisthalam Kumar, who practices in Hudson and

New Port Richey, one of the most exciting treatments currently available to patients is immunotherapy. “With immunotherapy, we’re able to enhance the patient’s own immune system,” he explains. “The white blood cells in the patient’s body attack their cancer. And because it uses the body’s natural defenses, immunotherapy is much better tolerated than the

previous treatments.” “Immunotherapies are really improving the outcomes for many cancer patients,” explains Dr. Gail Wright, who completed her Fellowship in Clinical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. “More and more patients are surviving all types of cancer because of some of the newer treatments, such as im-

allow us to pinpoint tumors and spare normal surrounding tissue. We can also use higher doses of radiation for shorter periods of time, thus reducing some of the side effects of treatment.”

Drs. Jorge Ayub, Mamta Choksi, Uday Dandamudi, Gajanan Kulkarni and Kapisthalam Kumar inspect the new PET:CT scanner, providing “next-generation” imaging technology munotherapy, and, in many cases, we’re seeing cancer becoming more of a chronic disease, allowing people to have a better quality of life.” Decoding the DNA of Cancer Researchers and physicians have been able to increase their understanding of cancer due to new genomic discoveries, which roughly began in 2006 with the first successes in cancer genome sequencing. According to Dr. Uday Dandamudi, who practices

Drs. Uday Dandamudi, David Wenk, Gail Wright and Mamta Choksi congratulate Medical Assistant Cynthia Orfanides (center) on her 22 years of service

in New Port Richey, “Genetic testing is now considered routine for a growing number of cancers in the evaluation of possible treatment options. Having this type of information helps us make treatment decisions that provide the most benefit to each individual patient.” Just as every human being has unique DNA, or a distinctive genetic code, so does every malignant tumor. Cancer actually develops due to a genetic mutation, or damage to the

DNA in our cells. Most gene mutations occur after birth; however, about five percent of all cancers can be traced to a family history. There are a number of factors that can cause gene mutations, including smoking, long exposure to the sun, certain viruses, and cancer-causing chemicals, among others. Genetic Testing Helps Guide Treatment Decisions As we have learned more about these genetic mutations, researchers have developed tests that can help determine the parameters of both diagnosis and treatment for some types of cancer. For example, for certain women who are at higher risk for hereditary breast cancer, knowing whether or not they have the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation can give these women and their doctors a better chance of early diagnosis and survival, in addition to informing a more personalized treatment for each woman, based on a patient’s unique genetic profile.

Clinical Trials Lead to Tomorrow’s Treatments and Cures Clinical trial research is at the heart of improving cancer treatment and FCS is a setting a benchmark for clinical trials at its community-based facilities. Dr. Mamta Choksi, who practices at FCS locations in Land O’Lakes and New Port Richey, says, “Last year, over 70% of all new cancer drugs were studied in clinical trials with FCS participation, prior to approval. This means that our patients have access to the newest and most promising treatments available without having to travel to a large research facility.” FCS treats patients with all types of cancer, and offers a number of services, such as an in-house specialty pharmacy, an in-house hematopathology lab and financial counselors at every location, that deliver the most advanced and personalized care in the local community. In Pasco County, there are five Florida Cancer Specialists locations: • 7651 Medical Drive, Hudson, FL 34667 • 19409 Shumard Oak Dr. Suite 101, Land O’ Lakes, FL 34638 • 8763 River Crossing Blvd., New Port Richey, FL 34655 • 14100 Fivay Rd. - Suite 380, Hudson, FL 34667-7181 • 5802 State Road 54, New Port Richey, FL 34652 For more information, visit FLCancer.com

Breakthroughs in Radiation Therapy Florida Cancer Specialists provides radiation oncology at strategic sites throughout its network, including two locations in Pasco County (Hudson and New Port Richey). Combining high-resolution imaging studies with radiation delivery allows radiation oncologists to have an even better visualization of structures as well as the tumor, so that radiation can be delivered more precisely than ever before. According to Dr. Gerald Sokol, an internationally-known radiation oncologist, “Advances in radiation therapy, including imageguided radiation therapy (IGRT), now Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

“Next-Generation” Imaging Technology Florida Cancer Specialists’ Pasco County locations were the first in the Southeast to offer “nextgeneration” PET/CT imaging technology on a mobile platform. Dr. David Wenk says, “Having imaging is vital in treating cancer patients; you don’t really know how the treatment is working until you can see what’s going on in the body.” Often, this technology is only available in large academic settings; however, the mission of Florida Cancer Specialists is to provide these same advantages in local communities throughout Florida.

National Rejuvenation Centers’ Patients Report Renewed Zest for Life By Kim Thomas “Hormones give the spark of life,” says Dr. Bartley Kerr, Founder and CEO of National Rejuvenation Centers (NRC) in Palm Harbor and author of RejuveNation: Live Healthier, Stronger and Happier through Hormone Optimization, Exercise and More, a best seller upon its release on Amazon. Dr. Kerr is helping NRC’s patients to gain a renewed zest for life through bio-identical hormone optimization, which he says is much better than just balancing your hormones. “We want to be able to look at our patients’ bloodwork, put our hand over the age, and think ‘this must be a person in their 20s’ no matter their age,” says Dr. Kerr. “We want them to look great, feel great, and mostly, we want their health profiles to be exceptional! We want them in the best shape of their lives.” Gaining recognition as an expert in the fast-growing field of Rejuvenation Medicine, Dr. Kerr has been a

guest on national radio, completed a nationwide book tour, and has had several network television appearances. The popularity of his book combined with the growing number of testimonials from patients reporting life-changing results has propelled National Rejuvenation Centers into the national spotlight, making it a destination for patients seeking optimal hormonal health. With many patients traveling from afar, Dr. Kerr is considering expanding National Rejuvenation Centers nationally. “We are getting calls from all over the country!” While nationwide expansion is on the horizon, there are immediate improvements for patients at NRC in Palm Harbor. Dr. Kerr has relocated NRC into an amazing new space, but it will be easy to find for current pa-

SUPPORTING OUR WOUNDED WARRIORS By Daryl Rosenthal Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Tampa FL Every Veterans Day, the nation honors the brave men and women who risk their lives to protect our country and the freedoms we cherish. Social Security honors veterans and active duty members of the military every day by giving them the support they deserve. A vital part of that is administering the Social Security disability program. For those who return home with injuries, Social Security is a resource they can turn to for disability benefits. Social Security’s Wounded Warriors website is at www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors. The Wounded Warriors website has answers to many commonly asked questions, and shares other useful information about disability benefits, including how veterans

16

can receive expedited processing of disability claims. Benefits available through Social Security are different from those available from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application. The expedited process is available to military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs. Even active duty military who continue to receive pay while in a hospital or on medical leave should consider applying for disability benefits if they’re unable to work due to a disabling condition. Active duty status and receipt of military pay doesn’t necessarily prevent payment of Social Security disability benefits. Although a person can’t receive Social Security disability benefits while engaging in substantial work for pay or profit, receipt of military payments should never stop someone from applying for

Risky Listening Habits Threaten Hearing in Younger Generations The Sertoma Foundation of Florida is sharing important information with the Tampa Bay area that concerns long-term hearing and health challenges that can create a lifetime of problems for younger people. According to Valerie Laberta, a freelance medical writer, today’s modern society is posing a serious threat to the younger generations. Too much use of earbuds, exposure to loud volumes and concerts, and excessively loud music in clubs can cause longterm injury to ears and hearing, and pose serious threats to ones health. In her article “Address Youth Risky Listening Habits to Prevent a ‘Deaf Generation,” Ms. Laberta noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has already raised a red flag, stating that “some 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smartphones and exposure to damaging levels of sound. Quantifying the global breadth of hearing loss, WHO reported that 360 million people have moderate to profound hearing loss,

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

but estimates that half of all cases of hearing loss are avoidable.” It has already been found that the prevalence of tinnitus is now higher in teens than in the general population at more than 54 percent, much higher than experts expected, which was about 30-40 percent until extensive testing showed a much higher number of teens effected. While headphones are better to use than earbuds, the concern is with the number of hours listening to music at unsafe volumes. Labera’s article, which appeared in the October 2016 issue of the Hearing Journal, scientifically addresses the escalating danger of risky listening habits to younger generations and provides background information that may be helpful to parents concerned about the longterm effects on their teens and younger children’s hearing. Hearing Loss is the most common birth defect nationally. Early detection and intervention is vital for an infant to have the opportunity to access speech and other sounds for learning and brain development. Ser-

toma Speech and Hearing Foundation assists hard of hearing babies, children, and adults to avoid a life of isolation and hear the world around them so they can succeed personally, academically, and socially. The mission of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida, a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization, is to enhance individual potential and quality of life through better hearing. Trinity Family Physicians Recognizes Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Winner Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached By Julie Kanehl Local physicians, Stephanie Eldridge, MD and Amir Shirmohammad, MD are a husband and wife team who started Trinity Family Physicians many years ago with the sole purpose of making a difference in the lives of the families they treated. Trinity Family Physicians is now a thriving and busy practice that hundreds of families turn to when they need medical care. Growing up here and now raising their own family here, the doctors at Trinity Family Physicians are heavily involved in the community, and they wanted to create a way to recognize local individuals who make a positive impact on the Tampa Bay Area, so they developed the Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award. Trinity Family Physicians proudly announces that the next Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award winner is Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached, a charity in every sense of the word.

22

No Strings Attached is a completely non-profit organization that gives to those in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings without receiving a single thing in return, hence the name, No Strings Attached. And The Winner Is: Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached Andre Kirwan, MBA, and Vice President of The Bank of Tampa is considered a Superman by many, but he’d probably describe himself more as a Clark Kent, or even more likely, as just “Pastor Kirwan.” A Youth Pastor at MorningStar Church, Kirwan is humble, giving, inspiring and sincere. In his spare time, he coaches football at Berkeley Prep, is President of the Warrick Dunn Foundation, and of course, he is 100 percent devoted to No Strings Attached, which collects and donates thousands of items to homeless people on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day. Every year, No Strings Attached donates things that people in our community truly

Andre Kirwan helps to distribute clothing to those in need through No Strings Attached charity need: Socks, coats, clothes, shoes, underpants, and prayer – a lot of prayer. Kirwan says, “Family is first for me. My brother, sister, mom and dad paved the way for me,” He adds, “God has wired me to realize that it’s not about me. Instead, I want to leave

a legacy of the heart, and I try to leave everything I touch a little bit better.” When interviewing Kirwan for this article, he deflected any praise toward God and to his parents, who worked hard and set an example for him. His father worked in the train

and airline food service industry to put himself through medical school, and his mother worked as a nurse. Together they worked hard to provide for their family, and they were able to put Kirwan into private school at Academy of Holy Names in Tampa, then Jesuit High School, and eventually Stanford University. Originally intending to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a doctor, Kirwan found himself heavily recruited to play football, which he did professionally in the Canadian Football League for eight years. After he retired from football, he went into banking as a way of helping people. He recently earned his MBA from USF, and is de-

serving of this award for his true dedication and commitment to others. No Strings Attached Truly Makes a Difference in Tampa Bay No Strings Attached was born nearly a decade ago, when Kirwan woke up overcome by the realization that he had blessings in spades that many others didn’t have. That November morning, he received a calling to give to others what many took for granted, so he emptied his closets, called his friends and asked them to do the same. His vision didn’t involve money; it involved actually getting out there into the community and giving – pure and simple.

“I realized that we were forgetting traditional values. We live among so much surplus,” says Kirwan. “So, I decided to put my time where my mouth is, and spend time with these people in their circumstances, roll up my sleeves and look these people in the eye, sit down and listen to them, then give them what I can.” Together with his network of friends and family through the many organizations that he worked with, No Strings Attached began to make a difference in the community. Kirwan talks of hugs he received from people who were down on their luck, people who hadn’t had a clean shirt, or even a clean pair of underwear for so long. These are the things that we take for granted; yet, there are people in our community who view these things as blessings and privileges. Kirwan says, “Last year we surpassed 40,000 items donated between Thanksgiving and Christmas and had over 70 volunteers that helped us serve a record 500 plus recipients on Christmas morning alone! We have come a long way from year one, 2007, when 1,448 items were distributed. Together, we have reached new heights, and every single item donated matters and will go to good use. No donation amount is too large or too small.” In 2012, Kirwan lost his good friend and right-hand-man in this ministry, Dr. Neal Sayers. Sayers collected donations all-year-round at his office, and his motto was “Go big or go home, baby.” When he brought his motto to No Strings Attached, more and more people benefited. His legacy now lives on through his children, who come out each year to support the homeless. For Kirwan, his loss cuts deep, but through his life and even his passing, more and more people have come out to answer the call of the needy and joined forces with No Strings Attached. Partnering with other ministries

in the area, such as Dressed for Success (which helps men and women find clothing suitable for job interviews), Trinity Café, Hyde Park United Methodist, Open Arms, True Holiness Church, Martha Shepley, and The Prince of Peace Ministry, no suitable donation goes to waste. Anything that is left over is donated or kept for the next giveaway. If you would like to support this great organization through your donation of items, resources or simply your time, visit www.nosacares.org and become part of the difference in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge would like to take this opportunity to thank Andre for his hard work and dedication. Trinity Family Physicians hopes that this story inspires others in our community to pursue their passion and answer their own calling to help make our community better by Making a Difference in Tampa Bay! Trinity Family Physicians has become a dedicated site to drop off clothing and other items for Andre Kirwan and No Strings Attached. Dr. Shirmo says, “We will collect items for the entire month of November and December until we close for the Christmas Holidays. We will continue to do this annually and help Andre and his charity Make a Difference in Tampa Bay!” Nominate Someone for the Next “Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award” Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award will continue to honor individuals who make a difference. If you know someone who makes a difference in the lives of others in Tampa Bay, Trinity Family Physicians and Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles want to hear from you! Please submit your nominees (and tell us why they qualify) for the next Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award by email at editorial@nnlflorida.com. ToyMakers Make Handmade Toys for Children Who Could Use A Smile! By Julie Kanehl What would you do to bring joy to a child? One who is scared, hurt, sick or lost? It may seem hard to believe, but right here in the Tampa Bay Area, there are children in hospitals, orphanages and situations where smiles don’t come very easily. In fact, the volunteers at ToyMakers of East Lake have given away more than 13,000 handcrafted wooden toys and cars in 2016 alone! Volunteers give many of the toys directly to children in Tampa Bay Area hospitals, while others are donated to organizations and first responders with the goal of giving a smile to the children who need one most. It may seem like a simple gesture, a handmade car to a child, but a toy like this is far more than a carved piece of wood, painted tires that spin, and a splash of paint. These cars remind children to hope, to dream, and to laugh. ToyMakers of East Lake is a non-

26

profit organization made up of men and women like me and you who donate a few hours a week to create toys that are safe enough for little fingers, clean enough for hospital environments, and fast enough to make a child giggle with glee. Famous for their “Batmobiles” and “Daisy Racers” they make wooden toys of all kinds. Their reward? A simple smile. I’ll Trade You a Toy For a Smile! There’s just something special about these toys and cars. You can’t buy cars like these at the store. These cars are sturdy and well made, solid and fast. Frankly, they put the cars at the store to shame. Perhaps they don’t have the bells and whistles…They don’t link up to your phone via Bluetooth or take pictures at 30 feet up, but they have something that children crave: They’re handmade with love. They also make walking toys (a penguin and a duck). Little ones love to walk them around, and for kids in the hospital, these walking toys are a huge

success, for if you ask a child to do their therapyforget it, but if you tell them they’re allowed to walk their penguin down the hall, they’re out of there and doing their therapy without realizing it. One volunteer said, “I recently had the opportunity to help distribute toys at Tampa General Hospital, and it was truly a humbling experience. To see kids of all ages, This little boy caught a ride on the antique fire backgrounds and situatruck at the Toymaker's of East Lake auction in tions smile when they reNovember ceived a car was amazing. success, as the public came out to support a great cause and to do some shopping! The silent auction featured hundreds of items, including handmade toys, gift cards to local restaurants, tickets to local museums and theme parks, and one-of-a-kind works of art. There was a beautiful buffet, opportunities to tour the workshop, and for the children, a place to race their brand new cars, as the ToyMakers of East Lake were kind enough to give free cars to the children in attendance. Chris said, “We love going to visit the ToyMakers of East Lake every year!” Volunteers are enjoying the colorful new workroom at ToyMakers Auction, which is held each November. At the most recent ToyMakers of East Lake Open House and Silent Auction, the East Lake Fire Department was on hand to take children and families on a ride in their antique fire truck! The ToyMakers have helped to restore the benches on the antique fire truck, which is a good thing, as Santa himself brings toys and tidings of good cheer to little ones all over town! Inside, the auction was a huge

Become a Volunteer and Bring Joy to a Child! It seems that everyone who sees the simplicity and the sincerity of this charity wants to be involved. A few days a week, volunteers of all ages and talents come together to make the toys that will eventually be delivered to children all over Tampa Bay and beyond. Their handmade toys have been delivered across the U.S. and as far as Haiti through mission trips, so it’s safe to say that this small charity, an Outreach Mission of East Lake United Methodist Church, is having an effect

on children all over the world. This holiday season, the CSX Corporation will be handing out more than 500 ToyMakers of East Lake toys from their famous Santa Train, which has run through the Appalachians for the past 70 years, giving supplies, food, clothing, and toys to the people who live there. Current ToyMakers of East Lake President and longtime volunteer, Bob Helms, stated, “We feel very honored that CSX would request our toys to be distributed on their Santa Train. Seeing as how they only distribute about 5000 toys, 10% of the toys they give out will be from our workshop. We’re pretty excited about that.” If you’d like to support this amazing charity, please consider donating your time! ToyMakers of East Lake is always looking for volunteers to cut out the patterns, sand the toys, paint the wheels, even to simply bag up the toys and count them for distribution. You certainly don’t have to be a carpenter to help build toys at ToyMakers of East Lake! Volunteers of all ages and talents are appreciated, and ToyMakers is happy to work with students who need volunteer hours through

Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. You may find that when you join ToyMakers of East Lake, you’ll find yourself surrounded by new friends, and a renewed sense of wonder in the good workings of the world. That’s what happens when you work for a good cause, it renews your spirit and your faith. The ToyMakers of East Lake have a workshop is located at 2690 Tanglewood Trail in Palm Harbor, FL 34685, behind the East Lake United Methodist Church. If you would like to donate, sponsor or volunteer, visit the website, www.toymakersofeastlake.org or you may email them at toys@toymakersofeastlake.org.

Build a toy with Santa at MOSI It looks like too many boys and girls have been good this year, because Santa is running out of room at the North Pole and he’s adding an extra Santa’s Workshop at the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) in Tampa. He needs your help to make sure his elves can make all of the toys they’ll need for this holiday season. Included with MOSI admission, kids can come to the Idea Zone® creativity lab and make real toys to take home and give to family and friends. Santa’s Workshop at MOSI starts on “Black Friday,” November 25, 2016 and continues through January 3, 2017. Santa himself will visit the workshop during the first three weekends in December (see below for details). Idea Zone® at MOSI will become a Minecraft-inspired winter wonderland, complete with a cubic Christmas tree and Minecraft model train. With help from MOSI’s elftrained staff, guests can get hands-on with: • Cardboard creatures – Transform ordinary boxes into real moving machines and make anything from a flapping bird to a dancing elephant. • Retro toy-building classes Spark your imagination and learn woodworking skills as you saw, sand, and hammer toy trains, cars, and other playful inventions. • Santa Sleuths - MOSI’s Elf on a Shelf has raided MOSI’s secret stocking full of 3D-printed toys. We’re looking for a few good Santa Sleuths to join in our reindeer game and help find the lost toys hidden around MOSI. • Live science shows - MOSI’s STEAMpunks science educators have

30

a toy-box full of science demonstrations to go along with the holiday. Santa Claus will be dropping by his workshop to share pointers and holiday cheer with his toy-making helpers. Come take a photo with Santa Claus at MOSI from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 3rd. Santa will be back at MOSI for brief 90-minute visits on Dec. 4, 10, 11, 17, and 18. “To me, the best kind of gift is a gift you make yourself – especially if you’re a kid. Santa’s Workshop at MOSI gives kids the chance to show their creative sides and make something memorable and unique for a friend or family member, instead of only choosing a gift off a shelf,” said Molly Demeulenaere, MOSI President & CEO. No reservations are necessary and hands-on Santa’s Workshop activities are included with MOSI general admission. MOSI is open every Tuesday through Sunday and is closed seasonally on some Mondays; visit mosi.org for daily hours.

“Allegro” Continued from page 1 living program to accommodate more residents, and has incorporated all the luxurious apartments into that license. With 92 spacious apartments that are staffed to care for residents requiring assisted living, Allegro stands apart from other senior living facilities. Each apartment is spacious and empty, so residents can move in their own furniture and belongings - decorate as they please and make their space a new home for themselves. Residents at Allegro have complete privacy if they choose and the apartments are warm and inviting. Each apartment features a screened in porch with a gorgeous view, a kitchenette, updated bathroom, spacious living areas and many amenities. From the staff and residents to the families visiting their loved ones, the level of happiness within Allegro is high. Staff members are fully trained and must exceed state level requirements. Dawn Winder, Executive Director of Allegro says, “In addition to state-required checks that we do on potential new employees, we also do a test that measures a person’s compas-

sion because we believe that compassion is not something you can teach a person. All staff members must fit into our team culture and be well liked by other members and residents. Our residents are our number one priority, which means our staff has to be topnotch.” Dawn believes that staffing a professional, caring and compassionate team is a top priority to resident comfort. She adds, “I can teach your hands to do anything, but I can’t teach you how to have heart. Having heart is a big part of this job.” Speaking of heart, if you ask any of the residents or their family members, they will tell you that Dawn Winder, who has been at the Community over a decade, is the heart of the Allegro community. Recently, members of FALA (Florida Assisted Living Association) awarded Dawn with the prestigious title of Administrator of the Year. FALA has 772 members and Dawn was thrilled and surprised to be selected out of so many wonderful people as Administrator of the Year. Dawn says, “It was one of the most memorable times of my life to be named in front of my peers who are also outstanding administrators.”

From independence to new friendships, residents are able to keep a schedule that suits their lifestyle and allows them to enjoy their retirement years. Allegro knows how to throw a party and have fun

High Tea in Tampa, entertainment includes musical talent, magicians and educational/inspirational speakers. I felt fortunate to meet a wonderful couple living at Allegro Senior Living. Bea and Reuben Sacks have lived at Allegro for the past five years and recently celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary at Allegro with a huge party that included family, friends and a local news crew to document their success in marriage. Reuben and Bea share, “Allegro took care of everything for our anniversary. It was such a pleasant experience to have everyone in-

volved.” Bea is a little woman with a big, feisty personality. She worked in hospital administration for most of her life and has experience running a tight ship. Bea says, “When it comes to running a place, everything starts at the top and Dawn sets the tone for the type of place that Allegro has become. She is always available, always says hello and when there is a problem or if we have a request or suggestion, we always are able to speak directly to Dawn.” Reuben and Bea moved to Florida in 1989 and built a life for themselves here. Bea says, “We picked Allegro five years ago after looking at numerous places to retire. This place shined above all the rest. It’s hard to get used to moving to a new place with new people, so I try my best to make people feel comfortable and welcome here - everyone does. There are all kinds of people here and I have made some wonderful new friendships. Coming to Allegro is like coming to a family. It is home.” Allegro is not only home to a community of wonderful people; it is a place to take charge of life in retirement. There are endless activities to

take part in that residents and their families can enjoy. Family members appreciate the mobility Allegro lends to their loved ones and rest easy at night knowing their parents or grandparents are in a safe place that is home to them. Paul Schulman shares, “My father in law, Bill Ancona, has been living at Allegro since June, 2014. He’s 93 as of this August. As a whole, Allegro has ‘saved the life’ of two families. Bill, after losing his wife 4 years ago was retreating into his mind, his body was failing, and my wife and I, who cared for him in our home, were struggling with how to live a normal life while taking care of my father-in-law. After reviewing five assisted living facilities, we chose Allegro – candidly, mostly because of the tenure of the Director Dawn Winder. The result – my father in law is TRULY a new man! He’s SO engaged in life because of Allegro. He wants to live to 100 now, where two years ago he would have been happy to ‘join his wife.’ My wife and I, on the other hand, have a new lease on life because we know he’s safe and happy! We are able to leave him for two to three weeks at a time to visit our grandchild, or travel, or visit family. Allegro has changed the lives of two families!” Bill loves life at Allegro and the people in the Allegro community love Bill. “We affectionately call him our ‘mayor,’” says Dawn. Allegro Senior Living continues to set a higher standard of life for retirees. Visit Allegro Senior Living to see if the Allegro community is the right one for yourself or your loved ones. Allegro Senior Living is located at 1755 East Lake Rd in Tarpon Springs. Call (727) 835–6902 or visit www.allegroliving.com for info. Call today to hear about Allegro’s new transition to home program after your hospital or rehab stay.
