Suncoast Women’s Care Celebrates its 15-Year Anniversary By Kim Thomas It was fifteen years ago this April, that Dr. Wanda Torres opened the doors to her practice Suncoast Women’s Care. Dr. Torres laughs and even tears up a little recalling those early years. Like anyone who has built a business from the ground up, Dr. Torres had to make personal sacrifices and work insane hours to make her vision a reality. “I started from zero. I had this idea for Gentle OB/GYN Care for Women by Women. But I opened the doors and there were no patients at first.” Dr. Torres would keep her doors open during office hours, then she would head to the hospital to meet other doctors. She volunteered. She put herself out there in the medical community so that the primary care physicians in the area could get to know her and the referrals started coming in. Suncoast Women’s Care has seen tremendous growth, and though there are two men working in the office (one is Dr. Torres’ husband Javier), Dr. Torres has stayed true to her mission to

12

have an all-female medical staff so that her patients know their care providers understand what it’s like to be a female patient. Suncoast Women’s Care is no longer located in a tiny office; now Dr. Torres has a spacious office on the second floor of the BayCare Medical Arts Building on Trinity Oaks Boulevard in Trinity, and now there are two OB/GYN doctors. Suncoast Women’s Care welcomed Malieri Colon-Rivera, MD in 2015, and they also have two nurse practitioner midwives. Nowadays, Dr. Torres can’t go out for a local shopping trip without running into mothers and the many babies that she helped bring into this bright world. She and her husband Javier have a sweet and joyous relationship and it was enjoyable to see their way with each other. “Oh yes, remember the other day at the restaurant when two mamas came up to us with their strollers,” she says and Javier laughs, saying, “and forget about it if she says she is going to the store for half an hour, she is gone for hours…” with Dr. Torres returning his laugh and the banter, “but I can’t help it – I always

see so many mamas who want me to see their babies and how they are growing!” She loves it! “We are members of a local congregation and have been able to go to baptisms, communions and even the confirmations of some of the babies I delivered. It’s exciting to see how they’ve grown.” It is clear that Dr. Wanda Torres is doing what she was meant to do. Her office walls are filled with photos of mothers and their babies, even her logo represents what she loves and features a mother’s face looking down at her newborn. Suncoast Women’s Care offers the full scope of OB/GYN medical care, including laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgeries. “I was the first doctor in the area to perform single site robotic assisted hysterectomies,” says Dr. Torres, who does these types of surgeries at Mease Countryside Hospital. Suncoast Women’s Care also offers in-office ultrasound, and can perform many procedures in-office such as leep cone biopsy, endometrial ablation, and hysteroscopy to check for polyps. If you are looking for an OB/GYN practice that will embrace

Sydney Has a Sister Scholarship Foundation Giving recognition to children whose siblings suffer from Autism is the main goal of the Sydney Has a Sister Scholarship Foundation. The cost of a higher education is expensive and can be a burden to many families. Sydney Has a Sister recognizes the sacrifices students have to make for the benefit of their sibling with autism. All proceeds collected are awarded to college bound students who have supported their family and sibling(s) impacted by this condition. Some of the funds are also allocated for other good causes, like purchasing school supplies and holiday gifts for people impacted with autism. The non-profit organization, created by Ernie and Becky Black of Land O’ Lakes, started in 2013 when Becky, a career specialist at Sunlake High in Land O’ Lakes, went looking for scholarship money for her eldest daughter, Sydney. The Blacks have two lovely daughters, Sydney and Regan. Regan is autistic, and the sacrifices Sydney has made and the tribulations she has had to overcome, inspired her parents to form the Sydney Has a Sister

16

scholarship program. While researching scholarship opportunities, Becky discovered there were no options for kids like her daughter Sydney, a spunky, sweet, caring and extremely smart teen who had long embraced the role of sister, caregiver and best friend to Regan. So almost 5 years ago, in 2013, the Blacks created one. In the first two years of the foundation, the family raised an unbelievable amount of almost $45,000! After recruiting many volunteers to assist the several fund raising efforts and activities, the Blacks were able to award six $1,000 scholarships in 2014, fourteen in 2015, and twenty four in 2016. The funds were also used to buy classroom supplies for students with disabilities at Lake Myrtle Elementary in Land O’ Lakes, Weightman Middle School in Wesley Chapel and Wesley Chapel High School. But they did not stop there! Some of the funds were also used to acquire holiday gifts for adults with autism. The non-profit organization has had multiple successful events since

Technology With A Human Touch Most of us depend on computers and other IT devices every day. Occasionally these devices act quirky, slow down or completely breakdown. When this happens we need someone to help us solve our problem quickly. We want someone to give us reliable and courteous service, someone who will explain the problem without confusing “technology jargon.” Most of all, we need someone we can trust who will give us an honest assessment of our situation and charge a fair price to fix our problem. “We treat every customer like a friend and every computer as if it were our own,” said Bob Dalles, president of Bob The Computer Guy & Associates, Inc., a full-service computer and IT company dedicated to making every customer happy and completely satisfied. “We understand how stressful it can be when the technology we have come to rely on does not work,” Dalles said. “And then the additional stress of having to disconnect the computer, drag it into a repair shop, then wait days or weeks to get it back.

24

We make the repair process convenient because we come to the customer and perform our computer repairs onsite. It’s a major convenience that our customers love. They schedule a time for us to come to their home or office, and when we leave, their computers are fixed and their problems are solved.” Dalles’s company serves hundreds of customers in the Tampa Bay Area. Many are businesses but the rest are home users. “We especially enjoy working with individuals in their homes,” Dalles said. “They need tech help too, and are not always sure where to find service performed by professionally certified technicians. I feel that everyone needs and deserves access to professional quality computer help.” Associate-technician Christian, is very popular with senior citizens. “There are a lot of tech savvy seniors who rely on their computers every day. Some have commented to me that they really appreciate the way Christian takes his time to explain the repair to them, one customer even said she

Your computer’s hard drive data files can be completely purged to protect your privacy, which helps minimize potential identity theft. Then, once the data has been safely removed, your computer will be disposed of in a secure and environmentally safe manner. “We pride ourselves on customer convenience and creating “I want people to know that we’re here to help personal relationships with everyone, we do sincerely care about our cusour customers. “Air Hawk” Continued from page 1 every customer is served with the goal to provide them with exceptional service and products at a competitive price that is always fair. Like his company, Joe is locally grown; he grew up in Pinellas and graduated from Clearwater High School in 1995. In ‘99, he’d decided on a trade and graduated from PTEC in 2000 and immediately went to work in the heating and cooling industry. Fast forward to 2014, and Joe and Carly, now with a young family, were ready to be the force behind their own company in order to build lasting relationships with customers. Air Hawk has not only grown with our community, but has grown with technology and advancements in the Heating & Cooling industry. “We are embracing the technology age for our clients,” says Joe. “We now have an app that allows customers to book appointments, map out where technicians are located and track the location of their service technician to better help them with knowing the time frame for repairs and service.” It’s often a hassle to schedule

your day around waiting for a repair company, especially with kids, a full time job, busy lives… Air Hawk’s new app, HouseCall, allows you to check in on your service technician, so you can gauge what time they’ll arrive at your home! It’s a great service that is new to the industry and allows you to go get your grocery shopping finished, grab lunch or run errands up until the repairman is ready to head over to your place. Convenient, right? Just go to Air Hawk’s app website to make your appointment where you can see in real time which appointments are available. The app allows users to see where a technician is because it is GPS-based for technicians––you also can direct message your technician from the app and see a photograph of your technician along with their name, so you’ll always know who is coming to work on your home! Air Hawk’s mission is to provide excellent service for residential and commercial properties throughout the Tampa Bay Area by a team that is knowledgeable, safe and professional. Joe and his entire team are professional, knowledgeable and honest. Air Hawk comes out when they say they will, does the work, and if things aren’t right, they come back and make it right. I’ve dealt with many companies in the area that don’t show, don’t call back, and disappear when things go wrong. Joe and his team do the work at a fair price, and stand behind it to ensure the customer is happy. I happily recommend Air Hawk to anyone who needs AC work done.” Air Hawk Heating & Cooling
